i watch it play out on my facebook feed. a cutesy video plays about a wife and a husband texting each other. she bothers him with messages, he almost types “fuck off bitch” but says something nice instead. in this video, the wife is at fault. he doesn’t listen to her, he doesn’t come home, he ignores her messages. she’s a crazy bitch for getting mad at him.
my teacher asked us why marriage rates are going down. what do i know. i see instagram posts where a girl makes a joke about chloroforming a boy and i don’t find it funny. i see plenty of people who are perfectly happy and i see just as many who are broken, deeply. i see boys all the time unable to meet their girlfriend halfway - stuck, somehow, wanting to be open but knowing he can’t be. there’s a theory that the reason so many women are unhappy is that women have multiple deeply intimate relationships in their friend groups while men only have a partner. isn’t that sad. isn’t it strange.
the girl i knew in high school says “omfg this is me and u dan”. she’s talking about a post where married couples want to kill each other. my mother once asked me why i am so scared of touching. why the first time people show affection is the same time i start running. the comedian onstage uses his wife as a trampoline. all around me, people are laughing. the trouble is that jokes always have a bit of truth in them. i almost text him “haven’t heard from you in a while” but instead i turn off my phone.
there’s a lot of things i don’t understand, i guess. bachelor parties where everyone gets wrecked to celebrate his last days of “freedom”. the idea men are giving up so much to be with just one woman. the idea that a woman who is showing toxic behavior is just a bitch, and not a serious threat. what do i know. sometimes it makes me sick. when i was little i believed in love.
but why do people constantly equate nightmares with marriage?
Here’s the full transcript of Mark talking Darkiplier in the livestream
(Time approx. 3 hours, 52 minutes to 4 hours, 4 minutes into the stream. And, yes, this took forever). Thought you’d like this, maybe.
I’ve bolded stuff I find especially interesting.
Mark: Long ago, a long time ago, I liked to do these scary
edits because I just felt like doing scary edits and this is how Darkiplier got
born. And then what happened was over time Darkiplier became less and less
about the scary figure and more about this romantic figure, and it always
rubbed me the wrong way. And I kind of shied away from Darkiplier for a while.
And I really really really- if I was going to bring Darkiplier, and when we
thought about this, we thought, okay there should be a Darkiplier route. And that
was there from the beginning, and so when I wanted to do it I wanted to do it
my way, and I wanted to do it right, and I wanted to have this unending level
of creepiness. And at the same time, I didn’t want to step on the toes of Antisepticeye
because I know there’s a big fan base of that, and I didn’t want to get in the
way of that at all and I really don’t care that there’s more than one dark
personalities of people. But when I saw the opportunity to have this character
here, I spent like 8 hours editing this, like just meticulously every single
RBG. This is a layer, we green screened this one, I color corrected it, I
separated the RBG layers I added the shakes and glitchiness every frame. I worked
on the voice, too. The voice took me the longest to figure out. Like the
shakes! And my computer was dying this whole time cause I put my effects on
Tyler: The amount of time you had to spend rendering this.
Mark: And so, the audio’s actually three separate layers. It
would have been two, but Kathryn helped me out on that one to make it more
clear. It’s a normal pitched layer that’s edited, echoed, reverbed, mastered,
and convoluted which means it’s just thrown off to the left and right, and then
it’s a deep layer of that. But then to make it really come together- it didn’t
live without this center channel that wasn’t convoluted but was centered. But
getting that voice right was so pinnacle, so paramount to what I wanted to come
out of this. And we did like thirty minutes of shooting various versions of me
talking to the camera and I wanted to pick the exact dialogue that really kind
of gave away my idea of what Dark is in not a terribly obvious way.
Tyler: The other thing, this was supposed to all be one
Mark: But YouTube annotations, this new version doesn’t
allow you to link the same video multiple times, so these are literally the old
videos that I first did when Darkiplier first came about, like, these are the
ones, especially this one here, and then this is my cheap knockoff Darkiplier.
Amy: Canon Darkiplier.
Mark: Canon Darkiplier. And I’m going
to readily admit something. I joked about Darkiplier because it didn’t seem
like something people wanted to take seriously, and I’m okay with that on
certain aspects but it had diverged into multiple different facets and multiple
different personalities, and everyone had their own version of Darkiplier, and I
thought it was hilarious that, “Hey, here’s my version of Darkiplier, and he’s
an idiot.” Like, he’s just this weird emo kid. And then I stepped back from
that, like, I stepped back. And you can even- in that time, when I was doing
those videos, in this era, I was not very happy. I was kind of… I was
pessimistic about a lot of things. And I felt like that bled through in a lot
of things I did. And that’s why even October of last year I literally made Darkiplier
an emo character. And then when we were getting to this, I thought about it
like very carefully and I thought back to why I did it originally, and I did it
originally because, well, Darkiplier wasn’t even a thing. Darkiplier was not a
thing when I was making those videos. I just wanted to make some creepy stuff.
And then I thought about that, and I was like if I want to make a statement
about who this is, I need to own that and I need to put something out there
that is not ambiguous, because I realize that’s where I went wrong. I didn’t
have a solid character so obviously, people would come up with their own
versions, they would fill in the gaps where they saw fit. So, when I made this I
had to embrace it fully and fine-tune it down to exactly where I wanted. When you
choose the “fake” choice carrying through to this one, I really wanted that to
come through, except at the end to this video, where it gets silly, but that’s
because the real me comes in and the real me’s an idiot. And I’ve actually
watched this over and over again because I’m listening to the takes I put in
here and I’m listening to my inflection and my tone, my demeanor and I’m
imagining like how to refine it better next time when I bring him back, like
how to do it better.
Tyler: I remember now, I set up
Mark: Yeah, you did. You set up
the table we had to change it out for clear glasses because the green screen
was reflecting through. But yeah, even this, like the intersplices of anger, and
this is me getting real deep in the meta of Darkiplier, like if that’s even a
thing that can be- let me just pause it here. I don’t read too much into this
but if there’s something that I want to take seriously, I want to actually do right.
So, in my mind, Darkiplier is an entirely different person from me. But, much
like Warfstache, doesn’t obey the laws of physics. He exists in another world
entirely and bleeds through into this one. This is sounding really nerdy of me.
Tyler: I remember the Warfstache
Mark: So Completely unironically,
Darkiplier is a completely separate entity from who I am. But, he admires what
I’ve accomplished, and he’s very much… people picked up on this, and people
thought it was really creepy, because it’s what I wanted. He’s a social
manipulator. He is literally, 100% manipulative. He leads you into this false
sense of security, and he wants you to trust him because he wants to take
advantage of you. That is literally what I wanted for Darkiplier. And how
creepy and scary that actually is from the surface. Especially in this first
bit, where he says, “If dinner is what you want, then I can provide.” And I wanted
this to come across in a seductive way while also masking, like, this burning
rage inside that breaks through the suave nature of it. That was my clue to
reveal he’s not your friend. He’s not here to help you. He’s here to use you. And
that also came across when I was thinking about, like, the effects. Like, his
image shatters, he separates because he’s not entirely kept together, you know
what I mean? So, I wanted like the drastic impacts of the rage pulling back
suddenly to the calm nature and the demeanor and this last one, I was thinking
was especially telling. It’s not me trying to break through, it’s his shell
Kathryn: I love that.
Mark: Yeah? It’s my favorite of
all of them.
Kathryn: That’s one’s my favorite.
I have legitimately just gone and watched that bit.
Kathryn: It’s really good.
Mark: Oh, thank you.
Kathryn: I really like that.
Mark: Yeah. And number 1 the
visuals work hard on this one, but nailing the audio- that high-pitched ringing
that a lot of people were like wow that really hurts my ears, that was by
design. That was supposed to hurt because listening to him- a lot if
inspiration for him comes from G-man from Half-life 2 and 1, like this weird interdimensional
person that seems human but is obviously not and doesn’t obey the laws of
physics, and is just like this shell of a person that’s in a suit. Not a suit,
literally a human suit, and is trying to figure out how to puppet it right that
you believe him, but he’s really good at it. And that’s where the scariness of Darkiplier,
I think, really comes from, is because he seems like someone you can trust, and
he will manipulate you, and take advantage of you, and literally use you, and
to me that’s terrifying. Like that’s the antithesis of what I want to be and so
if I’m going to make an opposite version of me, he’s gonna be the fucking worst.
Like worse than any romantic story can ever bring about. He’s fucking awful.
Amy: It was convenient, though, I like
the way it goes from Relax to this, like the video “Relax,” because then people
were not expecting this. But it’s so nice to have it on Valentine’s Day. It
works so well.
Mark: And then came the bullshit
transition that we had to do. So, this is comical in a way.
Amy: It doesn’t drag it though.
Mark: Yeah it doesn’t drag. You
get the scary. Tyler’s here-
Tyler: In Mark’s suit, which I
have fit in, but not the pants.
Mark: He didn’t fit, we forgot to
get a tie, like, we printed out a mask, and I looked at this and was like I could
try to make this creepy, and then I went, I objectively can’t. Let me throw in
some punch sound effects.
Tyler: I have to make sure, cause-
Mark: He couldn’t see shoot.
Tyler: No, I couldn’t, and I had
to keep moving the mask cause there was one time we did this that the mask
ended up completely on the side of my head and I was just like, hey Mark, you can’t
touch my face.
Amy: The convenient thing about this,
though, with all the glitches is that you can hide stuff with it.
Tyler: Yeah, and there’s a reason I
never let go of Mark I have no clue where anything is.
Mark: Yeah, oh man. Oh, this, oh
my god. Oh, and secret Easter egg- you know who Dark is because he doesn’t have
a shadow. Totally intentional and by design.
WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO ENTER THE TERRITORY OF AN EMOTIONAL ARMY, WHO SIMPLY WANTS TO APPRECIATE AND CHERISH AN ANGEL KNOWN AS JUNG HOSEOK. You have been warned!
Now, who is Hoseok for me?
Hoseok is my so called ‘THE bias’ of BTS (since all of them are my biases… oops).
Hoseok is my inspiration.
Hoseok is my sunshine.
And somehow he is hated and under appreciated.
Why is that, however?
Perhaps it could be because he is too kind
It could because he genuinely loves and cares for his members
And in generally is kind to all. After all, there are those who can’t fathom the idea, that someone might actually be nice and supportive to other people.
Maybe he gets hate for trying to stay positive. Some people feed on negative energy and thus really wish to bering someone with good vibes down, they want to bring down that precious smile, to destroy it.
And of course, one of the biggest reasons people hate him is because he is so talented. And as a result he achieved fame along side his members
And it pains me, oh it pains me so much to see this amazing, beautiful young man get hurt.
It hurts me so much to see people throw insults at him simply because of jealousy, because the feel threatened.
Hoseok deserves the universe.
Remember the video, when on his birthday he saw a video filmed to wish him happy birthday? Remember how emotional he got, how touched and honoured?
He didn’t waste any time, making sure to thank all the people around him, to hug them, hold their hand, anything to express his gratitude.
This is a young man who had the ability to do a full solo song for the groups album and he chose to write a song about his mum, for his mum, thanking her for all she went through.
This is the young BOY who said to himself that the only way he can make his mother proud, the only way he can repay her for all her sacrifices is to ‘become successful.’ Even if that meant selling his all.
Selling his body to endless practice
Selling his private life
And even selling his own emotions.
What does that mean?
Well, on one hand Jhope is a sunshine, on one hand he is Hobi.
A sunshine with a smile so pure
A sunshine with a laugh so genuine
A sunshine who just loves to play around
Yet on the other hand, he is Jung Hoseok.
Someone with a deadly passion
Someone with extremely powerful emotions
Someone rather serious
Someone who smiles much more calmly
And honestly, I love that calm side just as much as I love the sunshine side.
Because part of the allure of Hoseok is that he is a very full rounded human being. A very beautiful one inside and out. And so what i hope is that Hoseok actually allows himself to be himself (whatever that truly is).
Im sure that his members are alway there to support him.
Hoseok’s existence seems to be making everyone happy.
But its those precious moments when Hoseok is happy for himself, content with his own self that he shines like the amazing star he truly is.
When he allows his emotions to overtake him
That my heart just fills with happiness to the brim as I realise that yes, I do love this young man in some sense.
It is then that I smile because he gives me happiness, a reason to be excited, a reason to work hard.
Which is why I wold like to ask more people to pay attention to tis amazing young man.
Looks are subjective, dance is subjective and so is the ‘great’ rap style. Just because he doesnt fit your ideal type does not mean that you have to start creating movements in order to bring him down. If your favourites do not deserve to be destroyed, the neither does Hoseok, or any other innocent soul.
I hope Hoseok stays happy.
I hope he IS happy.
I hope he gets more opportunities to shine, to create his own work, develop his own self both as an artist and as a human being.
I hope he stays healthy because unhealthy Hoseok is broken Hoseok and nobody wants that. No, not because people would stop stanning, but because we do not want him to be in pain.
But if he is, I hope he does not feel like he is a Burden to BTS or ARMYs.
Because he isn’t.
Angel Hobi down mean perfect Hobi for me. It means a relatable Hobi, someone who is human, kind, emotional, loving. Angel Hobi means that by being himself, Hobi gives us one more reason to smile and go through our day.
And it would pain me if he doesn’t know what he means to me, to us.
We ARMYs support, love and cherish Hoseok to the fullest and i pray to all entities that he knows that.
Because his smile is one that must never fall.
Because his smile is one that deserves to forever stay genuine.
Taeyong: Had one scandal that ended up being a misunderstanding but then people began adding rumours about multiple scandals and bullying. Luckily SM and fans disproved this and it’s stopped. He even cried and apologized for things he didn’t do. How could anyone hate him?
Yuta: So what he had chin surgery and maybe a nose job? Do you think your faves haven’t had surgery? I mean most idols have so your fave probably has. It’s normal in Korea and shouldn’t be such a taboo concept.
Winwin: He has had a few comments about his lack of Korean skills and bringing nothing to the group.
Johnny: This boy has been getting so much hate and I didn’t even realize until recently. So, apparently because of his lack of lines in songs and not leading in dance or rap people have been calling him talentless and ugly and recently he didn’t get the same amount of photos as other members at photoshoot and has been told not to talk so much by writers. Let the guy live, he trained almost 10 years for this.
Doyoung: He’s gotten hate for his looks and his talent and everything else. When Johnny and Doyoung joined 127, he was the one that got the most hate and fans demanding he got switched with Hansol. And he’s often called annoying or too determined by ‘fans’.
Taeil:• It’s not so much hate but more him being completely overlooked. I’ve seen ‘fans’ call him useless but apart from that he’s just not appreciated within the fandom enough. Finding Doyoung stans is hard for me but finding Taeil stans is almost impossible. Give this guy some love please.
Haechan: He get hate comments at the beginning for being ugly and knetz attacked him for his skin tone. He was then hated on for his voice being high and irritating and even saw someone say he copied GDragon (I know 😒). Recently, it got worse when he had a rumour that he was dating or talking to a saesang fan and loads of his fansites shut down like the snakes they are. SM and even his own members have been known to give him the cold shoulder (unintentionally on NCT’s part) and he’s only really got the support he deserves this comeback.
Ten: Ten got a lot of hate at the beginning as I remember people who ‘supported’ SMRookies shared the video or him singing ring ding dong and people said some really nasty stuff about him being talentless, ugly, gay (even if he is, not a bad thing but was used as insult etc).
Dream: They’ve faced so many comments about how young they are and people either call them foetus’s and ignore their hardwork and talent or sexualise them. Also, when 'fans’ complained about them getting their first win and said they didn’t deserve it.
NCT 127: People began to complain because the music style was all over the place. Then When 2 members joined people complained about the change in unit and unstanned them.
They’ve all gotten so much hate from the beginning and I don’t understand why. They’re attractive, talented, hardworking and the idea and their music is so good. I just don’t understand how anyone could hate on such a great group of guys (or any idols really).
Okay so I know we are all over the moon about the trailers and game play videos that we have gotten these past few days, but I honestly think that we have been glaring over a pretty CRUCIAL detail from the classic sonic game play video
Think about what we have heard from the Sega Officials, this is not a Sonic Generations sequel. But how can this be if classic sonic is in the game? How are Sonic’s past enemies here alive and ready to fight? How is it not akin to generations if classic Sonic is alive and here?
But what is he isn’t?
What if this classic sonic isn’t the one from generations at all? But instead, from another dimension? Now I suppose Dr. Eggman may just be referring ro another state of time, but I don’t think the connection stops there. For the most obvious question, how in the WORLD did Eggman take over the world without Sonic to stop him? Its the focus of the game but H O W? In colors, generations and lost world. sonic had made stabs at Eggman claiming “Its like its his job to stop him” because, well? It is. Eggman knows this.He knows it far too well. In generations he went back in time to try to right his wrongs, to redo his errors and end Sonic but time and time again it didn’t happen. So what if Dr.Eggman instead decided to look beyond his world, to another dimension, with another Eggman? But why stop there? Why not bring forth a dimension where Sonic failed? Not only that, but a universe where Chaos destroyed Station Square. A world where Metal Sonic won the race on Starlight Speedway. A world where Shadow never helped to defeat the bio-lizard. A world where the deadly six drained the world of its life? This would explain why Shadow has suddenly switched over to the dark side, why Metal Sonic is still functional, why Zavok is alive and why Chaos is in his earlier forms before he became perfect chaos.
Of course, like the Time Eater, Eggman wouldn’t be able to do this on his own, as we have seen with our new villain:
Now as menacing as he appears, these cubes are so….out of place. It’s strange on why he has all these cubes, and why the trailer makes them look as dramatic as it can. Showing our new villain SURROUNDED by them and then ending the trailer with him hurling them at you. It’s odd. So what are they if the cubes are so important? Well to put it simply,
They’re different dimensions
Whoever this guy is, he is in control of countless dimensions, more than enough to combine and design a whole new terrible reality. A whole new HORRIFIC dimension, where Sonic has failed, and Eggman reigns supreme. What is the name of this devious villain?
As in..Infinite worlds?
The clues are right in front of us, and all we had to do was pay attention. The trailer certainly wants to get the point across
Now, I may be jumping the gun on this one, with my head of fan fiction type ideals, and perhaps this new villain will just be connected to whoever you create as your own character, (either it be an evil twin or something like that) but who would want to do this? Who would want to bring total destruction onto a world full of peaceful people? Who would want to see the world burn and fall apart right before their eyes because of their wrong doings? Who would want to see people of the resistance fail hopelessly, desperate to save their once beautiful world? Who would want to team up with Eggman to decimate the world? Who hates Sonic so much that he would want nothing more than to force him to watch as his legacy, friends, home, universe fall apart? WHO IS INFINITE? Well I may be wrong, but there’s only one person who can and will
From the timeline that was erased. From the universe you reversed in Sonic 06. From the world you fought so hard to save and redo, rewriting reality so you could get the happy ending.
Now, its his turn
On a side note, Sonic Team knows that sonic 06 was a disaster, and make reference to it in the Sonic story episode in Lego Dimensions. Pretty coincidental or foreshadowing? Some other things we can consider as well could be that in 2012 we first heard rumors of a Sonic game called “Sonic Dimensions” The rumor said that we would be traveling to other universes with different color Sonics that had their own personality. My personal favorite, is a promise of a boss fight of an evil Amy Rose, wishing for Sonic’s pain rather than love. Now the rumor as we know now is false and was debunked and this could very well be a coincidence. However, this rumor broke out in 2012, a year or so after Generations and 1 year before Lost world released in 2013. I think we can safely say that Lost world was at the very least in early stages of production during or sometime after Generations especially with its ambitious game play style. It would have taken more than 2 years to make, with the game play style and everything else. This means, Sonic Forces could had possibly be in the early stages of development a little before Lost World, playing on the idea of different universes.I think it’s also possible that Sonic Forces may had been delayed at some point because of Sonic Boom’s games and tv show, since its not being advertised at the 25th anniversary game. Also is a pleasant time to remember that this happened:
Due to Gravity Falls’s more dark story telling, I think its safe to assume that Alex had some kind of influence on Sonic Forces’s story. Either way,
We are in for a long deserved fantastic Sonic Game my friends.
Good! A little bit. A tiny bit. Très bien et toi ?(very good and you?)
Very good, thank you. We start our interviews with “can you give us your five favourites words in English or French. Or a French sentence”. Someone told me you knew a French sentence.
Comment vous faites un café si délicieux? (How do you make such a delicious coffee?)
OK, that’s good.
That’s all I have.
Do you say it very often?
What does France mean to you? Is it something, someone etc...?
Best people I’ve known... I think her, *shows a fan* I guess. Fabien Barthez.
Yes, Fabien Barthez. Harry, you’re 23 years old and you’re one of the best known pop-star in the world. Everybody has expectations with your new album and single Sign Of The Times. Why did you choose that song? This is not what people were expecting.
I think I wanted to.. I've always liked music that made me feel something. You know I think writing it I could feet something I wanted to bring it out. I think it's a good indicator for me of what the album is to me. That's why I wanted to go with that first.
Billboard wrote that the single was "one of the more ambitious opening statements in pop this decade". Not bad, isn't it?
Do you have friends working at Billboard?
I don't know anyone at Billboard.
When we listen to the song we think of David Bowie, Queen, who else did you think of?
I mean, I think everyone, anything, any song you've ever listened to growing up or throughout your life or you've enjoyed, inspired you. There are a lot of different things. I wanted to just write and see what came out. I didn't know what I sounded like to make an album. So this process was as interesting for me as I think it will be for people listening to the album for the first time.
Do you know French singers other than Serge Gainsbourg? That's a tricky question.
I know Woodkid. He directed my music video.
I think his videos are amazing, he's a really talented guy and I love French people so I worked with him.
When you're in Spain, do you say that you love Spanish people?
It seems like everything has been easy...
You think so? It's French.
It's not a Spanish tie, isn't it?
Can I see your loafer? Oh yes! What is the brand? That's not French, isn't it? It's Italian.
That's from the European Union!
It seems like everything has been easy for you, is it true?
Was what simple?
Your life, everybody wants a life like yours, with One Direction...
I mean, I feel very lucky to be able to make music, I feel very lucky to be able to make this, I feel very lucky today being in France and performing my song. I love this song. I can't complain.
What were the unpleasant things?
I don't know, say only one thing.
I think when you care so much about something, it's hard to get to the point where you feel like it's finished and it feels like you're adding and it never ends and it adds up. So I think the hardest part was getting into that point and be like "ok that's finished."
You said to the Rolling Stone magazine that most of the album was inspired by a woman. Really?
No I think, honestly, the album is much more about me than it is about anyone else. I think if I said the album is about a woman it kind of feels like, I don't know, I put a lot of work into this. I don't feel like it revolves around woman. It's a lot about me and things I've never said before. It's more about me.
How did you start with a boy band and end with a solo career? Is it complicated?
It's been a lot of fun. You know we were very lucky to get to do some amazing things and at the moment in our lives, we're in a time where everyone is trying their own thing and have a good time. It's been amazing to see everyone doing their own thing as well. If I can do as well as the others, it'd be amazing.
Do you call them everyday or text them? Do you use What's app?
I don't have that.
Yes we talk, absolutely. And everyone is bringing stuff out. It's been a lot going on. It's been a good time.
This is the album cover! Can you describe it? Why did you choose this picture?
Yeah. So, I don't know. I worked with photographer Harley Weir, I'm a massive fan of her work. And that's amazing and I was lucky enough to work with her. I felt like this was what I wanted.
Why is it pink? Why the water? Why your back? Why? It's beautiful but why is it pink?
I don't know, man!
Really? You don't know?
I don't know. I don't think I want...
Apparently pink is Rock'n'roll's colour.
Apparently so. I don't know. I think it means something to me and if it means anything to anyone else, I wouldn't want to take away from that by explaining it. I think the cool thing about stuff like photos and art is you can just leave it. You don't have to explain it.
Everybody sees what they want to see.
Have you seen this?
*video of people reacting to Harry's single*
Your fans record themselves while listening to the song for the first time. You can hear relevant analysis and apparently they all really liked it. Do you read what people say about you on social media? On Youtube, Twitter, Instagram? Do you use Instagram?
Yes I use it a little bit.
*The public disagrees with Harry*
Yes I use it a little bit. I mean I wish everyone was having as good time as the girl who was like that with her hands. That's what I do when I listen to the song.
Are you the one using your Instagram? Do you use your own fingers or someone else does it for you?
Yes, I do mine.
Do you still vote in Redditch?
That's where I was born?
I don't live in Redditch.
So you don't vote there. Where did you vote?
What do you think of the Brexit? Welcome to Europe!
Thank you very much, thanks. I mean, I don't really comment on politics. To me, anything that brings people together is better than things that pull people apart. That's ... yeah.
Yet, you are in favour of equality of rights, men, women, gay people, straight people... That's politics.
I don't know. It doesn't feel like politics. I think stuff like equality feels much more fundamental. I feel like everyone is equal. That doesn't feel like politics to me.
Your fans are fetishists. They know all of your tattoos, piece of jewellery, they have heart attacks when you cut your hair. Right now you're playing with their feelings. Do you know that?
Yes! What is your favourite tattoo?
I think... I have a.. probably. I don't know, actually.
Which one is the latest?
The latest is this one there. *shows Arlo* And this one. *shows Jackson*
Jackson? All of them?
What's the story behind your haircut? How much did you spend on hair products with One Direction?
Yeah, like a lot. I used a lot, yeah.
You're in Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan's new movie.
How did you do?
Look at you there.
I am, that's me.
I auditioned and it was great. It's going to be a really cool movie.
Harry, it feels like we know you since you're a baby. The whole world discovered you in 2010 on X Factor.
*video of Harry's X Factor audition*
You auditioned alone but Simon Cowell had an idea... he put you in a band with Zayn, Louis, Liam and Niall. You became One Direction. You found the name One Direction and you sold millions of albums. One Direction are soon considered as the new Beattles and you filled the biggest stadiums. The whole world was talking about you. When you go out we prayed for your eardrums. You became UK's pride. David Cameron is in one of your music videos, your sang for the Queen. But in 2015... bang! Zayn left the band, fans couldn't get over it. But don't worry, their favourite is now on the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine, he's in Christopher Nolan's new movie, he's Mick Jagger on SNL... What you don't know is that we've met in 2012. You were in France to promote an album and now I have questions. First one! When you're in a car and fans are all around you, do you see that?
*video of fans around a car*
I think I've actually lost my shoe there. When I got in the car... I got in the car and I was like "how many shoes do I have?" Yes I lost my shoe.
I have another question! Do you still do that before going on stage?
*video of Harry and Lou*
Can we do it?
*does it anyway*
What is the weirdest question someone asked you?
I think it was actually a French interview. I got asked if I would pee in a sink... Yeah.
Ok, that's weird!
It was the first question, the first question.
It puts you in the mood.
What is the question you never want to be asked ever again? Did I asked you that question?
*Harry asks the public*
Which one? Oh crush.
Oh ok. I didn't ask it! Did you know that a French author wrote a novel about you. It's called "Styles", it's about his obsession with you. It's in French. You can translate it.
Oh! Is that true?
Yes it's true. He dedicated to you. It's called "Styles" and it's a really good book. Read it!
Thank you very much Harry Styles for coming tonight. His first eponymous album comes out on the 12th May. Thank you Harry Styles.
Lin would cry the day you were born but he would also brag a lot.
He’d shower you with gifts but he was also careful not to overdo it
Chances are, (depending on your age and whatever year you’d picture this for) you’d be friends with a lot of the Hamilton cast/ and or their kids
There’s no doubt about it you’d be a freestyling genius much like him and musically talented.
And Lin would be so proud of this
Lin’s heart would melt every time you called him ‘dad’
He is probably one of the most caring, sweetest, and involved father out there.
And if your mother wasn’t in the picture, Lin would be sure to work to fill in her shoes.
He would attend all your school events and extra curriculars too.
On mother’s day he would plan a brunch inviting his sister and mother over making sure you knew you weren’t alone when it came to the amount of females in your life.
Whenever he goes to Richard Rodgers Theatre or goes to work for whatever project he’s working on he is constantly pulling his phone out to show his fellow coworkers pictures of you
He can’t help it
But one thing is for sure, Lin would make sure you knew how strong of a woman you were. Being a strong activist for equal rights Lin knew how easy it was for girls in today’s society to feel weak and defeated by the powerful and he never wanted you to experience that. So he would make post-it notes and stick them in your lunchbox, on your mirror, and anywhere he could find with sayings such as…
“I am woman hear me roar!” “Though she be but little, she is fierce!” “A strong woman looks fear in the eye and gives it but a wink.” “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”
And because your father is one of the most encouraging and inspiring figures in the world, not only in tweets but reality as well, he excels at giving the best, most needed pep talks when you’re down in the dumps.
Lin had you speaking Spanish as soon as you said your first word
Lin would practically document your entire life. He liked taping you and taking pictures while you were doing casual activities such as coloring, singing, dancing, playing with your dolls, running around the house, etc.
Tobillo basically being your best friend
That dog follows you wherever you go
Lin has thousands of videos from when you were learning to walk, practically waddling around and Tobillo was right on your heel the entire time following you.
The whole Hamilton cast would be obsessed with you
That girl loved you as if you were her own
And if you were old enough, you would join the Schuyler Sisters in their inbetween shows closet talk.
Sleep overs at Jasmine and Anthony’s while your dad is out of town
And they would absolutely LOVE having you over
You made them want to have kids that much more and Anthony loved taking you to the movies and Jasmine loved taking you out shopping
Speaking of shopping, Renee, Jasmine, and Phillipa are always spoiling you with the newest trends and what nots.
The Hamilton cast would be like another family to you
Always running around backstage with Groffsauce, who usually was assign babysitting duty.
The Schuyler sisters- as well as Leslie teaching you how to harmonize
Daveed loved helping you with your freestyling
You and him always got in heated battles- in good spirits of course
Playing childish games during intermission and between shows with Oak, Daveed, and Anthony.
Trying to braid your dad’s hair during his Hamilton days
Let’s be real, Lin would dedicate Dear Theodosia to you
And during Stay Alive (reprise) and It’s Quiet Uptown he had genuine tears pinching at his eyes as he fathomed the thought of losing you
But Lin would always run to you and spin you around every night after shows
The two of you would walk hand and hand together home and Lin would sing you to sleep every night
He’d love making you breakfast and basking in that domestic life
I could see him making some of the best pancakes in the world
And one morning when you were little, you convinced him to let you have a sip of his coffee
“Daddy, what’s that black stuff in there.” “It’s called coffee, bebé.” “Can I try some?” “Uh, I don’t think so, Y/n. You wouldn’t like it.” “Please, papi.” “Oh alright.”
Like he predicted, you hated it. The liquid burned your throat and young little you cried at the bitterness for at least a minute which broke Lin’s heart.
Lin would be the type of parent that would love to show you off to family and friends but when it came to posting pictures of you on social media, he usually made sure your face was covered, just to keep an element of privacy in his life.
But he does love tweeting stories about you or cute things that you do
Your childhood years would be a little hectic. Lin probably wouldn’t be around as much as he wants with filming, acting, composing and all but he would make an effort of a lifetime to be as involved as possible.
By your late teens you had already seen much of the world but that didn’t mean you were bored by any mean. Adventure was in your soul.
Lin would spend a lot of time with you during his time working with the film Moana. He liked to come to you to find inspiration.
Family trips to Disney World and Land
Lin is constantly trying to help you with his homework
“You know I was a teacher.”
Coming to him when you start learning about the American Revolution
“Well I mean you came to right person. I did write an entire musical about this stuff. Just use the album for a reference, it’s mostly accurate.”
Walking into your house one day after school infuriated as you set your pop quiz on the Schuyler Sisters in front of him, a large 9/10 circled with red pen.
“And I quote, I’m the oldest and the wittiest… My father has no sons… dad you cost me a perfect score! Why did you lie in the lyrics, I thought you said I could trust them!” “I’m sorry I forgot they had other siblings!”
Similar to your father, you swore like a sailor
Which also meant you were constantly getting scolded and death glares from your father who claims “He didn’t raise you to speak like that.” Even though you both know he did.
But honestly I could see Lin being into girl drama. Like when he picks you up from school and sees an annoyed look on your face he’d just shake his head and say,
“Spill the tea, honey. I’m ready!”
And on your bad days after dropping you off at home after school, Lin would drive to the nearest DQ and Chick-Fil-A and movie store returning home with gifts in toll.
He was one of the only people in the world you trusted enough to tell everything too
Dad jokes, so many dad jokes.
“Dad I’m thirsty. Do we have any-“ “Hi thirsty nice to meet you I’m Lin-Manuel.”
Being very close with your grandparents
Your grandpa teaching you how to cook
Your grandma would spoil you tbh
Girl talk with your Aunt Luz
Your dad would be really big on making sure you knew and understood the importance of equality and treating others with respect.
Weekly meals at their place where your grandpa is also telling tales
“You know pequeño, when your father was your age I couldn’t get him to shut up!” “Papi-“ “He was always doing his rapping, talking fast and never making sense but he had passion just like yourself so don’t you ever give up on yourself carino. If your father did he would not be where he is today- and neither would you.” “Thank you abuelo.”
And when you finally do make it, doing whatever or being wherever that may be, you’ll have Lin’s as well as the rest of your families support because Lin knows exactly what it feels like to have millions of people doubt you and laugh at you for doing the unexpected so his support will never run out.
When Lin finds out you have a passion for writing and composing, he immediately takes you with him for a daddy daughter date to the studio.
He pretends to be out of ideas for a song and you play along knowing it would be a lot less painful to take the easy path.
“Well there are a few different projects I’ve been working on lately. They aren’t too good… pretty shitty-“ “Y/n.” “Sorry… but uh, you can have a look I suppose.”
Becoming a co writer beside your dad on his next project
Going on walks and hikes together with Tobillo
But for real though Lin would be insanely protective over you
Like when it comes to you Lin always needs to know where you are and constantly has eyes on you
When you got your first boyfriend/girlfriend Lin would FLIP
You’d suddenly become a player in the game ’21 questions’ or more like 101 questions when it came to your dad
He demanded meeting your significant other and no matter the gender, he held his strong demeanor and hardly cracked a smile- well until he saw how happy you looked in their presence.
But eventually he’d come to term with it. Although he would always see you as his little girl, he knew you had to spread your wings and he was not about to hold you back from doing so.
And when you finally land a lead role on an upcoming Broadway show, Lin is ecstatic.
Every day he calls you to ask how rehearsals are going partly because he’s interested and excited for you but also because he remembers his restless days and nights where he’d come home so stressed he’d forget to eat for days. He didn’t want to see you go through the hardships he did.
Ironically enough the new production is held, opening night, in the same old theater you grew up in, Richard Rodgers. Home sweet home.
And on opening night you can guarantee your father is sitting front row with four bouquets of various flowers surrounded by all your family and friends as well as a handful of the original and new Hamilton cast.
And he would cry. A lot.
But he would also be that dad that right before the show starts, as the lights are dimming, he stands up and shouts,
His proud dad tweets would be never ending that night
After the production he was sure to be the first backstage and the first to hug you.
“You did it, you did it! I’m so proud of you, mi ángel. Congratulations!”
You’d be lying to yourself if you said your dad didn’t have a surprise party planned for after the play because he did.
Not to be a downer but there would be days where Lin would cry himself to sleep thinking he hasn’t done enough, or given you the life you deserve. He worked himself far too hard to make sure you had everything you could ever need and knew you were loved, but sometimes he couldn’t help but fear the worst.
Although at times he can be overbearing, you wouldn’t want it anyway else.
This was so fun to write oh my lord, hope you enjoyed!
There is a story going around the interwebs about a pair of professionals who traded their electronic signatures for a few weeks and about how the male then discovered that the female was treated differently and about how hard women have it in the professional world.
It reveals how much trouble women have being taken seriously as experts. On anything. In reading the comments left on this story, I discovered the same sad narrative in nearly every one. Women, strong, intelligent women, were doubted at every step, on a daily basis, because no one believed they could possibly know what they were talking about.
Reading through these stories I thought, well, at least that doesn’t happen to teachers. As women in a traditionally female field, we are less likely to be immediately doubted when we speak, less likely to be dismissed purely because we are female.
Until it hit me.
The whole teaching profession is constantly being asked to see its manager. The whole profession is constantly being doubted. The whole profession is seen as being ill-informed. Teachers are never seen as experts. We are regarded as something between babysitters and lazy, spoiled whiners, who just want our summers off.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Teaching is seen, by in large, as a feminine pursuit. And as such, teachers, while well-educated, well-trained, and well-read, are seen as less PROFESSIONAL and worthy of respect than our counterparts in other fields. When people DO praise teachers it is often with the kind of nostalgic affection reserved for things which are cute and sweet, not with the kind of respect given to others in other, more male dominated fields.
Everyone thinks they know what is best for education. Education policy, education critique, education reform: all are dominated by a kind of condescending man-splaining which would be abhorrent and vilified were it not accepted as the status quo.
Watch the video of the president signing his nomination for Betsy DeVos. He says, “Betsy…education, right?” like it could be any little honorarium he is throwing to any billionaire with a checkbook. Because education doesn’t need to be overseen by an expert. It is just women’s work. Put a nice, grandmotherly looking, well-coiffed lady in charge and it’ll be all good.
And when I have spoken out against this (and I have pretty much not stopped doing so for awhile now) people have pointed out to me that you do not need to have been a teacher to run a the Department of Education.
Really? Why? Because the base assumption is that teachers do not really understand big, important things like running a government bureaucracy. Our only purvey is the classroom, which like the home is to be paid respectful lip service, but not to be seen as a venue for real work.
I have had WOMEN, whom I LOVE, say things to me about educators like, “He is trying to run a company and she is worried about pipe cleaner art. Not really the same thing.”
The whole problem with the way our country talks about teachers is that, by in large, we are seen as a group of women, and therefore, the work we do is not seen to be really that challenging. There are whole books and television shows dedicated to the idea that a man, having excelled in another field, can stop by a classroom for a short period, for the purpose of entertainment or self-gratification, and somehow this is okay. No one thinks this about courtrooms or operating theaters.
So I did the thing, and it’s stupid and terrible, but here, have it:
Bucky’s an EMT. Normal guy, just living his life, trying to help where he can. And then one day, all of a sudden, the aliens are invading NYC, and Bucky’s out there helping, right in the middle of the danger zone because of course he is.
There’s a fight going on, and a bunch of freaks in weird suits seem to be fighting the aliens, but Bucky doesn’t have much time to focus on anything other than all the people in dire need of medical attention. He does what he can to help, grabs the first metal bar he can find and fights only the aliens getting in his way, and works himself to exhaustion. Then there’s a blast, and it sends a man flying right into the wall next to him.
“Hey, you okay?” Bucky asks, rushing to help him, and though Bucky could’ve sworn the blow was hard enough to crush anyone’s ribs, he’s surprised to see the man–who must’ve been on his way to a costume party–stand up practically unscathed.
He’s got broad shoulders and a strong jaw and eyes of the prettiest shade of blue Bucky’s ever seen, and even with his face covered in soot and grime and blood, Bucky’s heart skips a beat.
For a few seconds the man seems a bit disoriented, then he finally registers Bucky’s presence. “What are you doing here?? Get out of the streets!”
“I was–” Bucky starts, and is cut off by an explosion right above their heads and a bunch of debris raining down on them, and a hand shoving him aside.
When he comes to, which is a surprise in itself, the dust has started to clear, and the man who’s clearly saved his life is carrying him as if he weighed nothing, concern in those beautiful eyes and a big, warm hand pressed tenderly against Bucky’s neck, checking for a pulse.
He locks eyes with Bucky and sighs in relief, the hint of a smile on his plush lips, but the hand remains where it is. “Hi,” he says. “You all right?”
“Y-yeah… Thank you,” Bucky replies, but he doesn’t move to free himself of the man’s arms. His stomach is doing something weird, and the man surely has other people to rescue, but for a few seconds they both just stay there, shell-shocked and staring at each other like the world around them has stopped.
Then something blows up nearby, and the spell is broken.
Carefully, the man helps him to his feet, makes sure Bucky’s in one piece, and then says, “Find shelter, okay? Stay inside.”
Bucky’s not planning to, but he can’t find it in him to tell that to this incredible man, so he slowly licks his lips and nods. Before turning around to leave, the man offers him a small, shy smile.

During the next few weeks after the Chitauri attack on NYC, every single piece of footage of the Avengers fighting against the aliens and helping civilians goes viral. Phone videos, security cameras, blurry pics.
The most popular, by far, is a snapshot of Captain America carrying a guy, who can be seen fighting aliens and helping people in other videos, bridal style, thumb caressing his jaw, and both looking like lovestruck teenagers.
Bucky can’t go to the grocery store or even do his job without being stalked by the paparazzi or Cap’s groupies or just random people wanting to know what his Avenger name is, and for how long he’s been dating Captain America.
- - - - -
“You’ve ruined my life!!” Bucky tells him, because of course, of course Captain America would pick Bucky’s park for his morning run. Of course Bucky’d slip on wet leaves on the pavement precisely this morning, and of fucking course Captain America would just happen to be around to catch him at just the right time. Bucky’s seeing red.
“I’m sorry,” Captain America says, and it’s extremely unfair just how genuine and how much like a kicked puppy he looks.
Christ, Bucky wants to punch him.

Steve’s been living in PR hell.
He’s spent the past weeks “saving” girls and boys alike from getting hit by a bicycle, or fainting, or a fuckton of equally stupid shit.
The second anyone spots Captain America, there’ll suddenly be some kind of dangerous situation going down, and someone hoping Cap will carry them bridal style to safety and maybe fall head over heels in love with them in the process.
Steve is tired and done and ready to get back in the ice for another few decades, and shares Pepper’s worries that someone might actually put themself in real danger soon.
“We should handle this before it gets worse,” Nat says. And Steve agrees, of course, but he just doesn’t know how.
“Just marry the guy,” Clint suggests.
Steve almost chokes to death on his own spit.
Clint shrugs. “Why not? Half the world already thinks you’re dating…”
“Clint, he hates me…”
“Only cause people keep pestering him about this. If you two get married it’ll be a circus, but then it’ll blow over. He can’t even do his job right now, right? So you pay the guy for the trouble, yadda yadda, then when this is over you two get a quick divorce, and that’s it. Problem solved.”
For two minutes, no one else opens their mouth. Then:
“He’s got a point…”
“Tony, no,” Steve whines.
“You saw the footage, how he was helping those civilians… If you have to marry someone, he’s not a bad candidate,” Nat says, and then smirks. “Plus, he’s cute.”
Steve already knows he’s lost this battle, but that doesn’t help him feel any better about this. Yes, he’s cute. Yes, he’s a brave and kind and smart guy. Yes, Steve could very easily pretend to be married to him for a while and yes it’d help them both. None of that’s the problem.
The problem is that he kind of really likes the guy.
I have been working on finding my voice for years. As an artist, I always want everything I create to represent what my soul feels and sounds like – whether it’s a video concept or a lyric or melody.
Two years ago on a rare rainy day in Los Angeles, in a songwriting session with Owen Thomas and Lily May Young, I was venting my frustration about my music not connecting the way I wanted it to. Lily looked me in the eye and asked, “Tell me something nobody knows about you, something you are afraid to sing about?“ I immediately thought, well I like girls and that’s what I want to sing about, but even then I struggled to say it out loud. Finally, I told Lily that I always say “you” and “them" and never the pronoun “her" in all my songs because I was afraid it wouldn’t connect. We talked more about concepts and my experiences, and how I loved the idea of stealing another guy’s girl because that was always a fantasy of mine. Growing up, everything I did was always about girls. I took dance because of girls. I got involved in student council because of girls. Not that I ever expected any of them to like me back, but I just felt comforted being around them, even if I could never date them. So there we were. The song “Girls like Girls" was born.
I imagined a very emotional, heart-wrenching but real music video to go along with the song. When we shot the music video for “Girls like Girls,“ I felt like I was finally telling my story for the first time. The yearning feelings I had and also the feeling of being so alone. I think that’s why people connected with the music video. Not only because they too have experienced deeply liking someone, but also the sadness and longing that comes with it. You could be around so many people, and still have the feeling of being so alone and misunderstood. It’s that fear of rejection and uncertainty of whether the person will like you back that makes you question everything. I struggled with these feelings so much growing up. I’d fall in love with girls who would never give me the time of day, or if they would, they had no idea I had other intentions. I had my heart broken over and over again; I never felt good enough. My life was led by these crushes as far back as first grade, when I had a crush on my teacher. That was the first time I realized I liked girls. But the problem is you feel like you can’t share these true feelings with anyone for fear of outing yourself and facing judgement. So you struggle. And feel alone. Growing up, there were some [out] celebrities who were much older than I was and I wondered if I had to wait until then to be happy. I didn’t have role models who I could relate to at the time, where I could think, if they can do it, I can do it.
Most of the time, you become confident after years of struggling during your young adulthood. I want to encourage the youth to find that confidence now. Not later. For them to know their own self-worth at an earlier age. It’s been really cool at my concerts to see all of these young fans showing up alone, and then leaving with friends. The music and stories I create have built this judgement-free safe zone. But most of all, they have inspired me to be comfortable with myself, and to let them in. They unintentionally gave me a gift that I am forever grateful for. Most of my music isn’t necessarily about heartbreak or other people, but more so everyone’s personal journey and falling in love with yourself.
I think that’s why my fans and I relate to each other. My music reassures them that they aren’t alone – that their feelings are valid, that they are enough and they will find someone to love them back. I didn’t have that hope growing up, so I get emotional and inspired (or encouraged) every time I meet a fan who looks at me that way.
It’s hard sometimes, especially after this election, because I feel a responsibility to these girls. I know they are looking to me for guidance and comfort. It breaks my heart that fear is so present in our world right now. School is hard enough and it breaks my heart to see these kids under attack by hate crimes and bullying.
Hope. That’s my cause. I strive to inspire hope through human compassion and through music. Hope leads me through my lyrics, stories, and melodies. You must continue on, and know in your heart you are not alone, and have confidence that love will find its way back to you.
Can Conscious K-Pop Cross Over? BTS & BigHit Entertainment CEO ‘Hitman’ Bang on Taking America
On April 2, BTS played the fifth and final date of a sold-out U.S. arena run, performing to the shrieking fans who helped the group’s second full-length album, Wings, become the first K-pop project to crack the top 40 of the Billboard 200 in 2016. Since debuting in 2013, the seven-piece boy band has become a commercial behemoth in its native South Korea while continuing to make inroads within American pop culture. “Change,” an English-language hip-hop collaboration between BTS member Rap Monster and U.S. star Wale, was released three days before the kickoff of the stateside run.
“Change” touches on topics like voting rights and online harassment, while some of BTS’ biggest hits have addressed mental health. “Worldwide, our young generation shares the same issues socially and politically,” says BTS member Suga. Although K-pop music generally steers away from controversy, Rap Monster says that remaining outspoken “is important to us. And the bigger the voice we get, the more powerful our words become.”
A new BTS album is already underway and more U.S. dates might be on the way later this year. Bang Si Hyuk, the CEO and Executive Producer of label/management agency BigHit Entertainment who is better known as “Hitman” Bang, hints at “special features” designed for international listeners but thinks BTS will continue playing to its base.
“I’m not a believer in releasing full English songs to the U.S. market, like many K-pop artists have,” Bang tells Billboard in his first-ever interview with American press. “We must focus on what we do best as K-pop artists and producers and maybe add some special features to which international or U.S. music fans can feel attached. That is the best way for me to put K-pop into the mainstream U.S. music market and, in that regard, BTS will participate and perform in a way that is not much different from what they have been doing in the last three years. We’re adjusting and improving the way we do shows on the tour to meet the international or global level and expectations so that anyone, regardless of their culture and background, can enjoy BTS music and performances.”
Bang is sure to add that the group will be “very active and responsive in releasing new songs that would come out of collaborations with international artists, like 'Change.’” And, looking ahead, both the CEO and band see their most recent accomplishments as inspiration to achieve even more in the future.
“I’m so excited and thrilled at the response to the U.S. tour,” Bang says. “It’s still overwhelming and unbelievable at some point. I even further feel responsible for producing better music and production for fans around the world and I’d definitely think harder on what makes fans enthusiastic and passionate about BTS music and the band.” Meanwhile, the ambition within the group is perhaps best felt when member V winks that the group has “grander goals”; as if arena shows are just the beginning of what he and his band mates plan to accomplish around the world.
Below read on for an extended interview with BTS held before the tour kicked off. All member answers are taken via a translator except for Rap Monster.
With five arena shows, this tour is so huge and I think the main reason for that and why you guys are doing so well in America is because you sing about personal topics. Why is that so important to talk about in your music?
Suga: Worldwide, our young generation shares the same issues socially and politically. I think that young people feel the same way about similar issues and BTS wants to cheer them up with our songs and talk about our feelings and social issues.
Rap Monster: These topics, like you said, they’re important, right? They should be told by someone. Someone should talk about it. And if someone should talk about it, then it feels like we have to talk about it. It’s very much an honor that we get power and attention from our fans them when we use our voices more. It’s important to us and the bigger the voice that we get, the more powerful that our words become.
These topics – loneliness, mental health, bullying – you don’t hear about in K-pop or even Korean culture much. Or, really, in American pop music either. Have you ever worried it might get a negative or opposite response?
Suga: There are people who think negatively and there have been people who react negatively towards BTS’ music. But I think it’s way more important to make music with those issues because I think it’s important to encourage people to fight for those issues and, through the music, have a resolution for those issues. But I’m going to continue to talk about those issues through the music anyway. [Laughs]
Do you think K-pop needs to get more personal to gain a wider audience? Would you like to see that more in future?
Rap Monster: We still need some party songs, we still need some light love songs. I love to listen to them and feel the vibe from that. Everyone has their luggage and their shadows, but it’s up to everyone’s own [devices]. But we’re us. I think if we talk about it and if it gets more voice and attention, then maybe there are a lot of people in the world that accept us start to talk about those issues. I think that’s the change.
I thought “Spring Day” was a really big musical moment for you guys. Not only did it do really well on the charts, but this time you were showing a progression in thinking and a message of hope. The idea of recovering and winter moving to spring. Was that a conscious decision?
Rap Monster: It’s just like what you said, that was one step further. We’re always talking about the crises, the sorrows and youth’s feelings of getting lost. In many [television] programs, when we’d introduce our new album, I’d always talk about the word “recovery.” Like you said, it’s all about the recovery. Winter going to spring. The middle of the winter going to the spring. You got that.
Suga: In addition to being what we are as BTS, we wanted to bring some changes and we actually wanted to evolve as a group. We wanted to show our many colors, but we still want to console others and give hope to others.
Something that was unique was all the solo songs on the Wings album. You’ve done mixtapes, but instead of full-fledged solo or unit releases, you got to show your different sides of yourselves. Why was that necessary?
Jin: The solo tracks were important because it was personal, an individual story and it was represented in the way that we are good at it. We worked a lot on each track and that’s why it was important to each of us.
Rap Monster: When I get questions about why is K-pop is so popular; I always tell them K-pop is like a great mix of music, videos, visuals, choreography, social media and real-life contents. Making the solo tracks on the album was quite a venture, but it’s connected to the concept. Like, when you watch the “I Need U” video, everyone has their own crises and characters. It’s kind of connected to our real personalities and characters, but the solo songs have their own characters and personalities. It’s all connected. It’s a mixture and that’s why people get interested in the concepts.
Speaking of solo songs, “Change” recently came out. Rap Monster, you and Wale are talking about different-but-similar issues when South Korea and America are both having interesting political times. Did you guys have a chance to discuss your different viewpoints?
Rap Monster: We didn’t have the time to get into it deeply, but I’m always watching the news about Trump and America; I always watch. When he first suggested a collaboration, I was like, “What should we do?” We could just do you know, a common hip-hop song, but I wanted to do a little more special. We have our political situation in Korea and the students are very angry. So, I think, if we talked about what’s going on, then we’ll have a real special collaboration. I think my guess was right and it became special.
Do you see or feel your influence among other groups in the industry?
Jungkook: When we debuted back in 2013, we were influenced by our sunbaenim [Korean word for “senior”]. Over the years, as we watched other younger groups, we know they talk about us, they cover us and they follow us. I think they’re saying in interviews that they learned a lot from us and that makes us feel great. Being a sunbaenim, we want to be a good influence and be a better role model to other groups.
Last question, are you happy?
V: For now, we are very happy as we are, as a group, together. And I think we are happy because we are walking on the same path, walking the same direction. We wanted to get Daesang [Best of the Year award], but we have it already so our goal is to make great music, to share it with our fans.
Rap Monster: And a worldwide, stadium tour. That’s the goal.
Pst hi I LOVE YOUR FICS you have no idea how much they give me life <3 <3 I came across this really cute (and frankly heartbreaking) AU: "[burgler gently wakes me] you live like this?" (stolen from a post I saw on fb) and I kinda just need Stiles to do everything he can to make Derek's life better? THANK YOU SO MUCH :D
It IS frankly heartbreaking… which means I’m totally into it.
Derek definitely went to sleep alone. He always does, these days. It doesn’t explain why he drifts awake in the middle of the night to the feeling of someone lightly poking his shoulder.
It’s probably not a good sign that when he opens his eyes and sees a gangly teenage boy in a red hoodie and grubby-looking black fingerless gloves standing over him, he doesn’t startle. His claws don’t come out; his eyes don’t flash. He just feels… resigned.
“You live like this?” the guy says, soft. Almost pitying. “I mean. You actually live here?”
That seems too obvious, not to mention too insulting, to merit a response. “What are you doing here?” Derek asks instead. His voice comes out low and rough. This is the first time in days he’s had any reason to say anything. “This is private property.”
The guy shifts on his feet and sticks his hands under his armpits uncomfortably. “Okay, straight to the awkward questions. I like that.”

His parents dislike you because you are friends with Clay Jensen
“Why are you so sure that they hate you?”, Zach groaned as he heard you complain about his parents and unlocked the front door of his house. you rolled my eyes in annoyance and whispered loud enough:“Are you kidding me? The death glare that they are always giving me when they see me?”
Random presents during the day
“Are these roses for me?”, you smiled when your eyes caught the red roses on the backseat of his car.
You found out that he’s on the tapes
“You are an asshole, Dempsey.”, Tears started to rush down my cheeks, the school hallway was suddenly silent. “You don’t understand.”, he raspy voice filled my ears, just letting more tears escaping my eyes.
Being his winter dance date
Slow music played while everybody was quiet; enjoying the moment. His hands carefully curved your waist while your hands stroked his small hair on his neck. Your lips were locked with each others touch. This night was perfect.
Wearing his Letterman Jacket because it’s life
“Am I ever going to get my jacket back?”-”Never.”
“You look better with you Make-Up.”
Zach groaned annoyed when he saw that you were about to put foundation on your face, you just giggled and continued doing your Make-Up.
Trying to cheer you up whenever you are down
“Always when I was small I loved playing with spoons, and I always did something like that-”, Zach quickly grabbed a spoon from the kitchen sink and rubbed it clean, while letting his breath touch the cold metal. He laid the spoon on his nose carefully but failed awfully when the spoon fell instantly off his nose, but at least you laughed.
Him teaching you how to play basketball
“Damn you are too small for basketball..”, he laughed when the ball bounced away from you. “Ha-Ha!, you laugh sarcastic as you grabbed the ball away from him and tried to throw the ball in the basket and succeed.
Jamming together out to music in his car while a long drive
“Just stop your crying It’ll be alright.”, you both screamed your lungs out while Harry Styles’ voice filled the car with chills.
Cheering for his team they have a basketball match
Even though you never understand the sense in basketball, you knew when you have to cheer.
Playing video games at his house
“And- I won again!”,you cheered as the last HP of Zach’s character lost it, he groaned annoyed and runs his hands through his messy hair; begging for revenge.
I love you’s
“I love you so so so so so so much.”, he mumbled against your ear and kissed it softly, letting a small smile crossing your lips; You loved it to hear those little “love you’s” and every time you heard them you instantly melted away.
Alright, so, I’ll start this off by saying I am honestly not an expert on Kakyoin, contrary to popular belief (I’d actually consider myself more of an expert on Jotaro’s character, if anything), but I’m going to do my best to give my views on Kakyoin’s character, as well as some canon evidence to support it, and hopefully it will help a bit.
If you want a great reference of how to write Kakyoin in fic, go read Sand, sand and more sand on AO3, because it’s honestly one of the best depictions of Kak I’ve ever read, and he’s quite close to canon.
Kakyoin is pretty snarky. He’s subtle about it, but he’s also kind of a shithead. He’s polite most of the time, but it seems to be more of a setting he defaults to when he doesn’t feel entirely comfortable around the people he’s with. We have quite a few quips from him as examples of this, such as him laughing at andd mocking Anne during the dark blue moon arc, and saying she couldn’t possibly be the stand user on board, and in the Geb and N'Doul fight where he orders Polnareff to attack the canteen because he “doesn’t want to”. He also at one point responds to Polnareff saying “this looks bad!” with, “well it most certainly isn’t good.”
He’s blunt, but this also means that he’s honest. He dislikes liars, and prefers that everything is set out before him clearly and plainly as opposed to someone that is clearly dancing around the subject.
He also seems like quite the know-it-all, and likes being right; and he’s probably the type to argue with someone even if he knows he’s wrong. He seems to genuinely enjoy teaching the crusaders about the culture of all the places they visit on their journey, and he has the ability to retain all of that information to recant to them, as well. It seems to be somewhat of an interest of his.
And then there’s this, of course…
The cherry thing is something that kind of bothers me in fandom and fic. Yes; Kakyoin says that cherries are his favourite fruit. Child Kakyoin has cherries on his shirt (keep in mind that the scene with child kakyoin is added in my DavidPro and is not technically canon). BUT, it doesn’t mean that he has to have everything cherry-related. It’s a seriously overused trait in fandom to the point that it just becomes annoying. Kak can have a coffee without it having to be cherry flavoured. Just remember that he canonically enjoys lots of different foods, and that he doesn’t need to exclusively eat cherries and cherry flavoured things. He probably likes to eat foods from all different cultures.
Video games: There is evidence to suggest that Kakyoin spends a LOT of time playing F-Mega, however, this doesn’t mean that his extreme knowledge of the tracks and mechanics applies to every video game in existence. He’s a teenager, with no friends in the 80’s, of course he’s going to spend time playing video games. But back in the 80s, people often only had one or two games, so it’s likely that he has simply replayed F-Mega a LOT, to the point of knowing it by heart. I know the levels of Mario 3 extremely well, simply because I played them over and over again as a kid. If you are fixated on a single game for extended periods of time (especially if it’s the only game you own), you are of course going to know the game well. Knowing a lot about a single game does not mean that he’s obsessed with video games, and does not necessarily mean that he’s a shut-in, and never goes outside.
Also keep in mind that he says that he’s “pretty good at video games”. He doesn’t claim to be great at them, and since we’ve already established that Kakyoin is quite blunt, it would be out of character to assume that he’s being humble here. He literally means that he’s just “pretty good” at them. No more, no less.
His real-world experience is vast, and it’s also mentioned that his parents take him many places on vacation. He’s been to a lot of places, and retains cultural knowledge. It’s not as if he’s read it in books: he’s actually been to these places before, and he mentions it frequently. This suggests that he gets out quite a bit, and also kind of suggests that maybe he isn’t quite the model student type in school.
Kakyoin doesn’t appear to be the honours student & straight A’s type. He doesn’t think twice about skipping out on his new school to travel to Egypt, and as I said before, his knowledge appears to come more from first-hand experience rather than school studies (and I bet he missed more than a few of his classes due to the trips that he and his parents took). He’s a know-it-all, but it doesn’t mean that he does well in school.
On the other hand, Jotaro IS a model student, despite his delinquent status. It’s more likely that Jotaro would be the one helping Kakyoin with his homework.
(He might disrespect his teachers, but he still gets good grades, and let’s not forget that he becomes a marine biologist later in life.)
Kakyoin’s profile also mentions that he “appears very effeminite”. This is another thing that is often misinterpreted. His appearence may be somewhat feminine, and he takes pride in how he looks, but his personality and mannerisms are not inherently feminine.
He hates being forced into submission, and this is the reason why he despises Dio so much. Dio took advantage of his vulnerability and the fact that Kak didn’t have any friends to use him as his pawn. He drew Kak in, made him feel wanted, needed, and then took control of his mind and body.
“He appears to be very effeminate. In reality, he despises submitting to people or sucking up to them.” - Taken directly from his canon personality description.
Another thing that people seem to miss is the fact that he’s extremely sadistic. He says himself that Heirophant “loves nothing more than to rip things to shreds” and that it might “drive him mad with joy”. He likes being in control of the situation, remember. He probably hates losing fights, as well (especially since he could be considered a weakling for losing).
Kakyoin also seems to like Baseball, judging by his profile naming a favourite team, and sumo, as we all know from his exchange with Jotaro.
One of the things that fandom does definitely get right, is Kakyoin being the mother hen of the group. He’s taken on the role of the responsible one, because Joseph is… far from being an adult. He’s strategic and thinks everything out logically, and so is the mature one of the group, especially after Avdol’s “death”. He appears to be content to follow Joseph, but when it’s needed, he steps up and becomes the leader in his place. This is seen when Jotaro, Joseph and Polnareff start physically fighting random men that they suspect are the one in the Wheel of Fortune car, to which he says that, “this is not a good idea,” and that it’s, “getting out of hand”. It’s also seen in the tower of grey fight where he mentions that it’s better that he fights on the plane, because he’s the least destructive of the bunch (even though he’s capable of blasting holes into clock towers, apparently his emerald splash isn’t destructive; okay Kak…).
He’s also fiercely protective of his friends, and extremely loyal as well. Kakyoin isn’t the type to abandon his friends in any circumstance.
He’s a CASANOVA. While Jotaro draws more unwanted attention from girls due to his bad boy façade, Kakyoin is slick and smooth with them, so much so that they notice him more over Jotaro. He’s quick to diffuse the situation when Jotaro pushes the girls aside (again, in the tower of grey arc), and it’s just… yes.
Just look at this. You can bet your ass he’s not the type to blush and stutter as he’s confessing. Straight up grabbing the girl and apologizing for Jotaro. Smooth as butter.
Here are some other scenes that might be able to explain his character a bit better as well:
Mouthing off to Joseph- Jotaro approves.
This line is wonderful. (Again, to Joseph? It’s almost like they have this kind of rivalry going on, haha)
Some really good insight to his character and motivations (And one of my favourite Jotakak moments).
The anime kind of makes this out to be a sort of “Kakyoin mocking Polnareff” scene, but in the manga he seems like he’s just stating what he heard. Pretty matter-of-fact about the whole situation.
I believe that this is the first moment that Kakyoin really realizes that he and any of his companions can die at any moment. Avdol has been shot, and he’s in complete shock. This is a normal teenager that’s now painfully aware of the danger he’s putting himself in to help out Jotaro and Joseph. Sure, he realized that he would be involved in fights, and a little blood would be shed for the greater good, but I don’t think he had realized up to this point that he might actually die.
And here’s Kakyoin’s character bio.
It’s also notable that he didn’t tell his parents where he was going prior to leaving. This doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s in bad standing with his parents (especially since his dying thoughts were of them), and could possibly be because he didn’t want to worry them, or something of the sort, but the fact remains that he didn’t tell them beforehand. Take from this what you will.
So yeah, this is what I get from Kakyoin. He’s kind, loyal to a fault, and deeply in love with Jotaro– and he’s a pretty complex character to write. Don’t feel like you need to take all of this into account, because it’s hard to keep his entire character intact with fanfiction. A lot of his personality comes across in facial expressions, so it’s sometimes difficult to translate that into non-visual media. Just refer back to canon if you aren’t sure of something, and you should be fine. Good luck!
Let’s talk for a bit, because I’ve known about this for a while and I think now’s a good time to explain how I feel about using music not originally written for OC’s. This might be a lengthy read, because it’s personal. This vid was one of the first to use Tokyovania as Ink Sans’ theme.
I absolutely love when music can be associated with a character. I think it’s magical when a track makes you think of something you love or enjoy, and I love seeing messages or comments that I track I wrote would fit someone’s OC, because it feels special. Originally, this video was meant to be a tribute, with my track as the proposed theme, and I didn’t worry about it. After all, I didn’t write Tokyovania for Ink Sans, I wrote it for personal reasons, and I was sure most would understand that.
After a few months, it started to catch on for some reason that this indeed was written for him. A few other tribute vids were posted, and my name was nowhere to been seen as the artist of the track. On some videos, the name was also changed to Inklovania. The “Tokyo” was just erased, on a song containing the melody of “Tokyo Teddy Bear”, an incredibly special track I adored in 2014-2015.
Back then I was in high school. It was me against the world, and I had two friends. Things became rough around September in 2015, and I’ll keep the events hidden because they’re not something I need a reminder of. By December I was alone, and I had nowhere to turn but to music. I walled myself off and focused on composing, and being quietly alone all the time eventually led to the idea of Undertronic.
It was around this time that I decided to compose a remix of Tokyo Teddy Bear, as it’s a song I associate with wishing I could be anywhere else when things aren’t great. Seeing as I was also remixing Undertale at the time, I thought I’d combine it with another track, as a particular character was also in the same situation as I was, in terms of emotion.
In short, it was a special little remix to me and it would stay that way until Ink Sans became involved. Like I mentioned, I love when others use my music for OC’s, but I started to realize there was something wrong when I was accused of stealing this theme from Ink Sans, that it solely belonged to him, that I didn’t write it and I was a terrible person.
And the list goes on and was almost constant. To many, I’ve been disregarded as the artist of the track because “It doesn’t matter who wrote it,” and nothing hurts more to a musical artist than having a personal song be taken, even accidentally, from you and it suddenly becomes something else. The meaning behind the song no longer matters, and no matter what I do, this song will always be known as his theme.
It feels like a inconceivable back-stab knowing that literally millions believe this is his theme. I don’t even want to know how many would believe I stole the track from an OC, as if an actual artist doesn’t exist and the track magically created itself. Months went by, then a year went by, and I was very bitter about this track and the accusations I kept receiving. Finally I decided to write a response, and this response was “Tokyovania Control.”
I wrote in the description that I didn’t like the old Tokyovania. This is only partially true. I loved it for what it represented to me, I hated it for how I was being treated because of it.
If you may have noticed, I included new lyrics for Tokyovania Control. It was a slightly hidden, but direct message to how I felt, and it started at 0:53. Breakdown of the meaning is in the brackets.
How’d I get this feeling? [How’d it come to this?] I am running from this beauty, [I am running from Tokyovania.] Misunderstood or [It’s been misunderstood what the track is about.] Whom it’s made for? [Who was the track made for? Even I’m not sure now.] There’s no purpose, [The song has lost its original meaning.] Words are worthless. [Explaining/arguing won’t do anything.] Well, it’s still charming. [I still adore the track though. It was special to me.] I’d say “Sorry.” [Sorry, it was my mistake to let harsh words harm me.] “My mistake to let it harm me.” “Pardon my writing.” [Pardon my music, I’m sorry I got in your way, I should be thankful that this track is loved right? Indeed I am selfish for believing my name should be next to Tokyovania.] Though it hurts, it still sounds special taken from me, “Heh, oh well.” [Though it hurts, Tokyovania still sounds special taken from me. There’s nothing I can do now, so oh well.]
It was hidden well, and I didn’t expect anyone to catch on. And I was right, no one figured out why these lyrics were added or what they meant.
So no, I still don’t mind when a track I write is used for an OC’s theme. I only mind when I become non-existent as the producer, because “Who cares who wrote it, just enjoy the music.” I also mind when I am repeatedly told my work doesn’t belong to me, and I’m a horrible person for stealing a theme that belongs to an OC.
It’s one of the reasons I tend to include signature melodies in my music now. I don’t want to be forgotten or disassociated with my work. I don’t want to be told I don’t deserve to be the artist. Is it annoying? To some it is, but it’s a hell of a lot better than going through another Tokyovania situation. Having a track recognized by millions as an OC’s theme scares me much more than having someone simply steal the track, and nothing is worse to a musician than being repeatedly told my work doesn’t belong to me anymore, it belongs to an OC, and I’m scum for thinking otherwise.
I suppose what I’m trying to say, is be careful when you decide to pick songs to represent OC’s or AU’s. You may think no harm will be done, but it’s impossible to tell if something will take off. I don’t think this has ever been discussed before. I haven’t seen any musicians write about this, or share their thoughts. But I am friends with many of the Undertale remixers, and it’s sad to see that this has also been happening to one of my best friends Kamex with his “Your Best Friend” remix:
His music is gorgeous. He’s so kind & doesn’t deserve to be treated this way. If the remix is titled “Undertale Remix”, that does not mean it is an AU Remix. It is a remix for Undertale. But because this theme was used in an AU theme compilation video, the track apparently belongs to Underfresh. Again, no artist apparently exists and track magically created itself. Even worse, he feels he needs to prove it, so far as to say he has the project files if he needs to show it. To some, he’s not even respected as the producer. If you understand how I feel with Tokyovania, you can imagine how he feels as well.
Even Inktale’s creator recognizes Tokyovania as a theme for Ink, though it’s probably accidental.
Which makes me feel even more guilty, because I hate bringing people down. And knowing this wasn’t written for the AU will probably be a disappointing let-down.
So that’s about it, I thought I might as well share my thoughts, now that it’s almost been a year since this has been going on.
On another note, I’ve been working on something for Dusttale and Outertale. The Dusttale track will probably be the next vid, I dunno.
