i love this one the original is beautiful i just needed to edit it

Let’s talk for a bit, because I’ve known about this for a while and I think now’s a good time to explain how I feel about using music not originally written for OC’s. This might be a lengthy read, because it’s personal. This vid was one of the first to use Tokyovania as Ink Sans’ theme.

I absolutely love when music can be associated with a character. I think it’s magical when a track makes you think of something you love or enjoy, and I love seeing messages or comments that I track I wrote would fit someone’s OC, because it feels special. Originally, this video was meant to be a tribute, with my track as the proposed theme, and I didn’t worry about it. After all, I didn’t write Tokyovania for Ink Sans, I wrote it for personal reasons, and I was sure most would understand that.

After a few months, it started to catch on for some reason that this indeed was written for him. A few other tribute vids were posted, and my name was nowhere to been seen as the artist of the track. On some videos, the name was also changed to Inklovania. The “Tokyo” was just erased, on a song containing the melody of “Tokyo Teddy Bear”, an incredibly special track I adored in 2014-2015.

Back then I was in high school. It was me against the world, and I had two friends. Things became rough around September in 2015, and I’ll keep the events hidden because they’re not something I need a reminder of. By December I was alone, and I had nowhere to turn but to music. I walled myself off and focused on composing, and being quietly alone all the time eventually led to the idea of Undertronic.

It was around this time that I decided to compose a remix of Tokyo Teddy Bear, as it’s a song I associate with wishing I could be anywhere else when things aren’t great. Seeing as I was also remixing Undertale at the time, I thought I’d combine it with another track, as a particular character was also in the same situation as I was, in terms of emotion.

In short, it was a special little remix to me and it would stay that way until Ink Sans became involved. Like I mentioned, I love when others use my music for OC’s, but I started to realize there was something wrong when I was accused of stealing this theme from Ink Sans, that it solely belonged to him, that I didn’t write it and I was a terrible person.

And the list goes on and was almost constant. To many, I’ve been disregarded as the artist of the track because “It doesn’t matter who wrote it,” and nothing hurts more to a musical artist than having a personal song be taken, even accidentally, from you and it suddenly becomes something else. The meaning behind the song no longer matters, and no matter what I do, this song will always be known as his theme.

It feels like a inconceivable back-stab knowing that literally millions believe this is his theme. I don’t even want to know how many would believe I stole the track from an OC, as if an actual artist doesn’t exist and the track magically created itself. Months went by, then a year went by, and I was very bitter about this track and the accusations I kept receiving. Finally I decided to write a response, and this response was “Tokyovania Control.”

I wrote in the description that I didn’t like the old Tokyovania. This is only partially true. I loved it for what it represented to me, I hated it for how I was being treated because of it.

If you may have noticed, I included new lyrics for Tokyovania Control. It was a slightly hidden, but direct message to how I felt, and it started at 0:53. Breakdown of the meaning is in the brackets.

How’d I get this feeling?  [How’d it come to this?]
I am running from this beauty,  [I am running from Tokyovania.]
Misunderstood or  [It’s been misunderstood what the track is about.]
Whom it’s made for?  [Who was the track made for? Even I’m not sure now.]
There’s no purpose,  [The song has lost its original meaning.]
Words are worthless.  [Explaining/arguing won’t do anything.]
Well, it’s still charming.  [I still adore the track though. It was special to me.]
I’d say “Sorry.”  [Sorry, it was my mistake to let harsh words harm me.]
“My mistake to let it harm me.”
“Pardon my writing.”  [Pardon my music, I’m sorry I got in your way, I should be thankful that this track is loved right? Indeed I am selfish for believing my name should be next to Tokyovania.]
Though it hurts, it still sounds special taken from me,
“Heh, oh well.”  [Though it hurts, Tokyovania still sounds special taken from me. There’s nothing I can do now, so oh well.]

It was hidden well, and I didn’t expect anyone to catch on. And I was right, no one figured out why these lyrics were added or what they meant.

So no, I still don’t mind when a track I write is used for an OC’s theme. I only mind when I become non-existent as the producer, because “Who cares who wrote it, just enjoy the music.” I also mind when I am repeatedly told my work doesn’t belong to me, and I’m a horrible person for stealing a theme that belongs to an OC.

It’s one of the reasons I tend to include signature melodies in my music now. I don’t want to be forgotten or disassociated with my work. I don’t want to be told I don’t deserve to be the artist. Is it annoying? To some it is, but it’s a hell of a lot better than going through another Tokyovania situation. Having a track recognized by millions as an OC’s theme scares me much more than having someone simply steal the track, and nothing is worse to a musician than being repeatedly told my work doesn’t belong to me anymore, it belongs to an OC, and I’m scum for thinking otherwise.

I suppose what I’m trying to say, is be careful when you decide to pick songs to represent OC’s or AU’s. You may think no harm will be done, but it’s impossible to tell if something will take off. I don’t think this has ever been discussed before. I haven’t seen any musicians write about this, or share their thoughts. But I am friends with many of the Undertale remixers, and it’s sad to see that this has also been happening to one of my best friends Kamex with his “Your Best Friend” remix:

His music is gorgeous. He’s so kind & doesn’t deserve to be treated this way. If the remix is titled “Undertale Remix”, that does not mean it is an AU Remix. It is a remix for Undertale. But because this theme was used in an AU theme compilation video, the track apparently belongs to Underfresh. Again, no artist apparently exists and track magically created itself. Even worse, he feels he needs to prove it, so far as to say he has the project files if he needs to show it. To some, he’s not even respected as the producer. If you understand how I feel with Tokyovania, you can imagine how he feels as well.

Even Inktale’s creator recognizes Tokyovania as a theme for Ink, though it’s probably accidental.

Which makes me feel even more guilty, because I hate bringing people down. And knowing this wasn’t written for the AU will probably be a disappointing let-down.

So that’s about it, I thought I might as well share my thoughts, now that it’s almost been a year since this has been going on.

On another note, I’ve been working on something for Dusttale and Outertale. The Dusttale track will probably be the next vid, I dunno.

[Edit: I took a look to see if there were any comments marked as held for review, and the first one I find is-]

[The word choice gets more colorful in there.]

Reasons to watch the New Russian Holmes series (2013)

I’ve blogged a lot about this show over the last month or so, but I’ve been meaning to make a big post about it all in one place, so here we go!

Originally posted by spiritcc

A brief intro for those who care:

Sherlock Holmes (2013), or, as it seems to be popularly called, New Russian Holmes (as opposed to the old Soviet Holmes), is an eight-episode Russian-language Sherlock Holmes adaptation directed by Andrei Kavun, starring Igor Petrenko as Holmes and Andrei Panin as Watson. It first aired in Russia in November 2013, but has had no official English release.

So where can I watch it?

Despite the limited release, all eight episodes are available on Youtube, with English subtitles, translated thanks to the excellent @spiritcc.

Yeah but why should I watch it?

Because it is excellent. I don’t want to spoil people too much because discovering things yourself is really the best, but let’s be a bit more specific:

The opening credits:

Even before the first scene, we get treated to a beautiful opening sequence with really great music, but this isn’t just a sequence to shove credits in your face, it’s not even just an aesthetically pleasing series of shots of Watson’s notebook, the opening sequence forms part of the episode and part of the series as a whole.

Every opening is unique, from the images to the voiceover, and is as much a part of the story as the substantive scenes themselves.

The refreshing take on canon:

If you’re going to watch this, you need to know that the fundamental premise of the show is that the ACD canon lies. Watson’s “stories” are just that: stories. Holmes in real life is different, Watson is different, Mrs Hudson is different, the cases went differently, hell, even Gregson is different. So if you’re looking for a faithful replication of canon, this isn’t the show for you, but once you take on board this fundamental premise, it’s fantastic because it forces you to think about canon in a new light, and to consider the implications of Watson as an unreliable narrator.

You’ll get to see how and why Watson came to write “canon” the way he did, and you’ll get to see how everyone reacts to it. Every other adaptation (with the exception of Bert Coules’ radio series perhaps, but even that adheres to canon quite strictly) treats canon as more or less the “truth” and bases their version off that to create an output; this show treats canon as the output, and works backwards to imagine the “true” series of events behind it. This aspect (at least for me) was one of the most delightful themes to watch develop throughout the episodes, and it really shows how much original thought and passion went into the conception and creation of the show.

Watson as the true protagonist:

This sort of follows on from the fundamental premise of the canon stories being mere stories. Watson is the person through whom we get to know Holmes; everything we read is Watson’s doing, so it’s natural that the protagonist should also be Watson. We see the world from Watson’s perspective.

It’s not a story about this genius Holmes and his sidekick Watson, it’s a story about Watson and his adventures with this intriguing man, Holmes, and in that way it makes the show very grounded and very real.

Holmes the nerd:

For some reason, Igor Petrenko’s Holmes has been likened to Robert Downey Jr.’s Holmes, but I don’t think that’s accurate at all. Whereas RDJ’s Holmes veers more towards grubby cocky action hero who happens to be good at reasoning (and I don’t say that with any scorn), Petrenko’s Holmes is very much grounded in the same sheer intellect that defines canon Holmes, only this version is a more flawed, nervous character, which I think makes him more interesting. Petrenko does an excellent job with the quirks and mannerisms of the character. He also keeps insects in jars in his room.

nerd.

Watson the military man:

A lot of adaptations emphasise Watson’s role as a doctor, but few seem to remember that he was also a soldier, so it’s refreshing once again to see this series not only acknowledge that military background, but to explicitly keep it front and centre the entire time.

Watson the surgeon:

For all its joviality, the show doesn’t shy away from graphic realities either. Watson is more than just a doctor, he’s a surgeon. We see him handle the scalpel more than he does the stethoscope.

Watson the badass:

Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

Watson’s facials:

I know I’ve posted a lot about this but seriously Panin’s acting is really one of the highlights of this show, he was such an excellent actor, absolutely convincing in his role.

Brand new revised subtitles by yours truly!

Over the last two months I’ve gone through and edited all the English subs for the series, so hopefully everything will read a lot smoother! Any remaining mistakes are entirely my responsibility.

The humour:

Sort of reminiscent of the tone of the Soviet series, this series shares that light-heartedness, but it sure as hell isn’t a joke either. It’s not dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy. It doesn’t pull the cheap trick of taking advantage of your feels. The series sets out to tell a story and it tells a beautiful story and you will genuinely love the characters for who they are. And you will feel good about it. Yes, you will even love Lestrade.

Watson taking a bath:

The hilariously bad English (I laugh in good faith):

The creepy autopsy  man:

This weird ass scene:

Never has a show felt more genuine or more satisfying to watch when the final credits roll. This is a Sherlock Holmes that has had thought, love, and appreciation poured into its making, and it shows.

So, llamas, go forth! You can watch the entire series here. I hope you have as much fun as I did :)

The clouds that threatened rain earlier in the day have subsided, bunching themselves cosily near the horizon as though they’re aware that what Laurent needs more than anything else is a good sunset to serve as a backdrop. Laurent sits in the grass near the edge of the headland, looking down onto the dark sand of the beach. The water shades abruptly from turquoise to teal a few hundred metres offshore, a meandering divide that becomes less and less distinct as the sun creeps down.

Part of the reason Laurent has been so strict with the show’s budget is that he’s been determined, all along, to produce a finale that is truly spectacular. Sunsets over the ocean aren’t exactly easy to come by, on Australia’s east coast, and it’s an irony of geography that the nearest west coast belongs to another country entirely.

But that makes it better, Laurent thinks, gazing out over the vista of Te Henga. Crossing the sea. The romance of destination.

“I don’t suppose you’d be prepared to give us a hint,” says a voice from behind him.

“And spoil your authentic, on-camera emotional response?” Laurent shoots back. “Please, Jokaste.”

Jokaste steps up next to him; Laurent has to tilt his head to take her in. Her hair is braided back, one plait forming a headband and the others looped intricately into a knot at the back of her head. She’s wearing a long flowing dress of pale lavender, just a shade away from overtly bridal, and it somehow manages to accentuate the porcelain of her skin instead of calling out unpleasant pink or yellow tones. Laurent makes a note to give someone in wardrobe a bonus for that.

“You do know who he’s going to choose, don’t you?” she says.

“Of course,” Laurent lies, cool and easy.

Imagine Chris falling in-love with you all over again.

A/N: Epilogue! This is best if you listen to Ed Sheeran’s song ‘Perfect’ first 'cause I was inspired by that. Anyway, we’ve finally arrived at the end of the series. (I don’t know if I’ll write more, but this seems like a good place to end.) I’m so excited to go on holiday, but I’m terribly sad to leave you guys. Fear not, I might just whip out my keyboard at the airport if some inspiration strikes me. I love you all so much! 😘 You can read the previous parts here: ('Charlotte Rose’ - Part 1/Part 2/Part 3/Part 4/Part 5A/5B) and ('Drunk Minds, Sober Hearts’; 'Baby Fever’; 'Memory Lane’; and 'Little Ones’ - Masterlist) Enjoy and I’ll see y'all soon. X

Chris was right about the movie, 'Charlotte Rose’, taking home Oscars. It took home so many Oscars that it nearly cleaned out the categories; it won “Best Original Score’, 'Best Actress’, 'Best Sound Editing’, 'Best Original Screenplay’, 'Best Director’, and 'Best Picture’. You and Chris spent the night in Los Angeles celebrating like there was no tomorrow, earning praises all round for the work the two of you did as a couple. Articles flew and circulated the web: "Chris Evans and Y/N Y/L/N takes home six Oscars, it just goes to show that they’re as good as co-workers as they are a couple!”, “Power couple, Chris Evans and Y/N Y/L/N, dominates The Academy Awards!”, “Production companies will be fighting to work with Chris Evans and Y/N Y/L/N after they return from their hiatus.”

The movie was filmed and produced two years after your daughter was born, as you both wanted some time to care for your preemie baby. It was incredibly well-received around the world, so much so that you and Chris ended up doing press despite being the faces behind the scenes. As it turned out, the press and the fans were more interested in the work the two of you did rather than the actors and actresses you hired. You were lucky, however, to have both of your children be at the age where they could travel with you while you toured the world. It was a pretty great three months out of Boston, but eventually it was time to go home.

It was nice to be back in your home after months of staying in hotels, you could tell your kids were excited to get home too. Even now, as you spent a lazy Sunday in Boston with your family watching Disney movies, it was different to how you’d spend a lazy Sunday in Los Angeles watching Disney movies with your family, despite having a second house there. Boston was home now, the place Chris had bought before he met you- the place that you’d both turned into a home after getting married- was home now.

As Chris dried and put away the dishes, you were snuggled up with your kids on the couch. He looked over and smiled; there wasn’t a sight more pure that he could bestow upon himself. You looked up and smiled when you saw him smiling at the three of you, you beckoned him over with your head. He chuckled and left the job unfinished because you didn’t need to ask twice; that was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“Daddy!” Charlie pulled away from you and held out her arms when she saw her dad walking over; Chris smiled and scooped her into his arms. You chuckled and shuffled, pulling Jack closer to you as you made a spot for your husband. The girl was definitely his girl, whereas the boy was yours. “You smell nice,” she giggled when she buried her face into the crook of his neck.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” he chuckled, rubbing her back. It was clear she was getting tired, it wouldn’t be long until she fell asleep in his arms. Jack was halfway there too, fighting his heavy eyelids as he rested in your comforting arms. “You smell lovely too,” he told her as he pressed a kiss into her soft locks.

“Mama,” Jack whispered and you looked down at him. “I know we had pancakes for breakfast today,” he yawned and you chuckled, “but can we have pancakes for breakfast tomorrow too?” You nodded and kissed the top of his head as Chris wrapped an arm around you; you leaned into him and smiled when you felt him kiss your head.

“Think you can meet me in the backyard after I put the kids to bed?” Chris whispered into your ear and you turned to him with narrowed eyes. “Yes?” He mouthed and nodded his head, prompting a nod from you. “Awesome,” he smiled then turned his attention back on Charlie. “Sweetheart,” he spoke gently, “do you want me to put you to bed?”

“Mm hm,” she nodded her little head, rubbing her eyes.

“Alright,” Chris smiled and rose to his feet, lifting her with him. “Jack, you ready for bed too, bud?” Jack nodded; he kissed your cheek then pulled away from you, taking the hand his dad was holding out. “C'mon, Dodge.” He called and Dodger followed. “Backyard, fifteen minutes tops.” He mouthed over his shoulder as he took the kids upstairs to tuck them in for the night.

You, on the other hand, decided to spend the next fifteen minutes cleaning up the mess from your cozy movie marathon while waiting for Chris to return. It took him ten minutes which meant your kids were really worn out, otherwise it would’ve been at least half an hour. When he returned, you were finishing the dish job he’d left unfinished. He leaned against the fridge, smiling at you with a smile that drew laughter.

“What?” You smacked him with the dish rag.

“Nothing,” he shook his head, smiling. “I’m just admiring how beautiful you look.”

“Beautiful?” You chuckled softly as he took your hand, leading you towards the backyard; he’d prepared a special something for the both of you, some down time as a couple after spending the whole day as parents. “I’m a mess.”

“Darling, you look perfect tonight,” he whispered underneath his breath, but you heard it. You smiled and leaned in, tenderly giving his jawline a sweet kiss. “I figured we could go on that date we talked about in the hospital. I know we’re not old and gray yet, but-” he paused to push the curtains apart, opening the sliding doors. “This is as good a night as any to catch up on some alone time.”

“Chris,” you smiled as you took in the sight in front of you.

Your husband had laid out a blanket on the grass with candles and rose petals surround it. His iPod was plugged into a docking station and the song, 'Make You Feel My Love’ by Adele- the song that was playing at your wedding when you had your first dance- was playing. You turned to him and mirrored his dorky grin, shaking your head in disbelief. He leaned forward and your eyes closed as he pressed his lips against your forehead. After ten years of being with him, you still couldn’t believe how lucky you were.

“Shall we?” He held out a hand and you took it, letting him lead you into a barefoot waltz on the soft grass. “You know what, Y/N?” He whispered after a while. “I’d do anything to have this moment last forever. Just being here with you, dancing in the dark with you- it’s unadulterated bliss.” He pulled back to look you in the eyes, “you’ve given me unadulterated bliss. That’s something I never thought I’d achieve, but here I am with the perfect wife, the perfect kids. I have the perfect life,” his eyes glistened as he smiled, “because of you.”

“None of this would have happened if you didn’t find me first, Chris,” you smiled, feeling your own eyes well. “You are the reason we have all of this, you are the one who has given me unadulterated bliss. Without you, I wouldn’t be here. Without you, we wouldn’t have Jack and Charlie. Without you, my life wouldn’t mean as much as it does today. You are the love of my life- the light that dims all the dark. I have the perfect life because of you, Chris, not the other way around,” you told him.

“Let’s just agree to disagree,” he chuckled and dipped his head, kissing you.

Adele’s 'Make You Feel My Love’ faded out and Ed Sheeran’s 'Perfect started playing. You both chuckled as you broke the kiss; the memory of how you told him the song was the perfect depiction of your entire life together came flooding back.

I found a love for me

Darling, just dive right in and follow my lead

“We really just leapt into this relationship, didn’t we?” You chuckled when you thought back to how you met and how quickly things progressed after the first meeting. “It was like the universe suddenly decided it was time for us to stop fooling around with other people, just threw us into the deep end and left us to save each other.”

Well, I found a girl, beautiful and sweet

Oh, I never knew you were the someone waiting for me

“Aren’t you glad though?” Chris smiled when you nodded. “If I could just go back in time and just- grab Chris and shove him in your direction. Just have him find you years and years earlier, I would. I would just slap some sense into him, tell him to go find you instead of wasting his time with girls who clearly aren’t right for him.”

“I’d do the same with Y/N,” you nodded. “I’d drag her across oceans if it meant I could spend more time with you. Not that I needed to, considering we grew up hours away from each other.” You both chuckled. “God, what were we thinking? How could we have just missed each other? I mean- the life we could’ve had, the pain we could’ve avoided.”

“I guess we didn’t know we had someone so perfect waiting for us.”

'Cause we were just kids when we fell in love

Not knowing what it was

I will not give you up this time

But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own

And in your eyes you’re holding mine

“The first time I saw you, Y/N,” Chris chuckled softly. “I thought my heart was going to jump out of my throat. I was so nervous that I let the opportunity to speak to you- the love of my life- escape. If you didn’t drop that coaster- if Kevin wasn’t your father’s friend, I’d never would’ve met you and it would’ve eaten me up alive.”

“And I feel like a complete idiot ignoring my vicinity,” you laughed. “If I had just stopped obsessing with my writing for a second, take my eyes off my damn Gummi Bears- I would’ve noticed Captain America across the room and gone up to you.”

“Yeah,” he nodded, smiling. “But I’m really glad you didn’t though, that was part of your charm. Your passion was what captured me, your insanity-” he chuckled when you playfully slapped his arm. “You were like a breath of fresh air after years under water.”

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms

Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song

When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath

But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight

“And you still are,” Chris told you, tucking a loose piece of hair behind your ear. “Every time I see you, it’s like I’m being saved all over again.” You felt your heart ache at his sincerity. “No matter how bad my day gets, there won’t be something you can’t do to make me feel better.”

“Chris,” you pulled your hand out of his for a brief second, brushing the tear that had escaped. “Stop,” you chuckled softly as he did, kissing your forehead. “You’re making me cry and I don’t want to cry during such a beautiful moment. Ed Sheeran’s really not helping,” you referred to the song and he laughed.

Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know

She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home

I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets

To carry love, to carry children of our own

“This could be our anthem, you know that right?” Chris chuckled at how perfect the song 'Perfect’ was; it practically described your whole relationship in four minutes and twenty-three seconds. “If he’d just come out with this song a few years earlier, I’d have it playing at our wedding. It would definitely draw tears, I mean- just listening to it now, it’s making my heart ache.”

“Aw,” you chuckled. “I know, right? The best part of listening to it now though, it’s actually true. We’ve accomplished our dream of working together, you’ve accomplished yours of winning that Oscar you so thoroughly deserve.” He smiled when you brushed his cheek with the back of your hand. “We’re married, we’ve got a house, we’ve got our kids. Our life is complete, Chris,” you smiled and he mirrored it. “Don’t get me wrong, we’ve got lots more to do but- I’m pretty satisfied with what we have now.”

We are still kids, but we’re so in love

Fighting against all odds

I know we’ll be alright this time

“Yeah,” Chris nodded, smiling. “I’m with you there.”

Darling, just hold my hand

Be my girl, I’ll be your man

I see my future in your eyes

“I have you as my present and my future,” you smiled. “That’s more than good enough for me, more than I can ask for in this lifetime.” He pulled you closer to him and you rested your head against his chest, gently swaying in the dark and listening to the song as you reflected on your ten years together.

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms

Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song

When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful

I don’t deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight

Baby, I’m dancing in the dark, with you between my arms

Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song

Chris pulled back and you looked up to meet his gaze, he smiled and you smiled back. “I am so utterly, irretrievably, and irrevocably in-love with you.” You pulled your hand out of his and wrapped both arms around his neck, taking a step closer as if you could getting any closer to him.

I have faith in what I see

Now I know I have met an angel in person

And she looks perfect, I don’t deserve this

You look perfect tonight

“I love you, Chris Evans,” you whispered; your lips inches away from his.

“I love you too, Y/N Y/L/N.” His breath warm against your face. “Well,” he chuckled softly, “I should really say Evans, shouldn’t I?” You bit back your smile; you’d kept your last name for professional reasons. “It’s not like you’re going anywhere romantically, or professionally, now that we’ve proven we make such a great team.”

“I wasn’t going anywhere before that anyway,” you chuckled.

“Yeah,” he smiled and started to lean in, “I definitely don’t deserve this.”

“Neither do I,” you smiled and pressed your lips against his.

Hey everybody! I’ve finally got some money put back for this, and just in time — to celebrate 20,000 follows and 300 Ask Sam Stuff entries, I’m whipping out a contest parallel to Sam’s big beautiful B-day.

For the month of April, I’m hosting an Ask Sam Stuff contest that leads up to Sam’s birthday!

The basics are simple: pick an asksamstuff entry that you enjoyed or have some interest in, and expand upon it or recreate it in whatever way you want!

It can be fanfiction, fanart, crafts of some kind, or even edits! So long as they link with the selected entry in some way in subject matter, they’re all perfectly within the guidelines.  I want to see how amazingly creative all y'all are and expand our love for our boy, Sam Winchester (though of course, other characters are totally welcome, so long as you have Sam in there as a focal point). Post your creation to your blog with the hashtag #asksamcontest so I can find your entry throughout the month of April; you can also use @asksamstuff in your entry somewhere to ping me to it, or e-mail me a link at ashtraydentist@aol.com.

Be sure to link the asksamstuff entry that it is based on in your contest post, or let me know which entry your post is based on via message!!

At the end of April, I will collect the entries and pick the winners of a select group of prizes!

The categories are: fanfiction, fanart, and fanedits (crafts will be placed under fanart unless I recieve a decent enough count to make a fourth category). Judging will be based on how well the entry is done — not just in artistic ability, but in effort, creativity, uniqueness, and so on! So don’t feel discouraged; a lot of it will come down to personal preferences and different ways of selecting winners.

There is ONE person who will get a top prize — a unique and one of a kind Sam-centric fancomic, 15-20 pages in length, printed and shipped to their house with a special thanks printed in the back! And it will be entirely based on one of your own prompts that you supply when the contest is over. It will have a thank you letter and will be solely your own to do with as you please; your eyes only, unless you’d like to post it or what have you. It’s all yours! (As a note, it may take a few weeks for this to be completed and shipped out, so bear with me; light character shipping is alright but nothing too dirty, I’m a prude).

From there, here are the prizes for winners of individual categories!

Two winners of each category will get to choose between a grayscale copy of any of the asksamstuff volumes, a color copy of The Little Golden Hunter’s Book — OR a piece of art based on a prompt they offer, if they already own the books or prefer a drawn picture. The art will be personalized with a thank you and can be sent to you, if you would like that instead of being gifted digitally.

A listed number of runners up will recieve a notecard with an original hand drawn Sam Winchester and a personalized thank you, as well as some stickers, in a cute little envelope!

Everyone who participated will be listed on a masterlist of entries for all to see, as well as a link to your blogs, that will remain linked on the asksamstuff blog’s navigation page. ♥

The only requirements for entering is the following:

• Fanfic should not be any longer than 10,000 words. People who can pump out more than that are so cool and I want your powers, but I want to be able to judge everyone quickly, and I fear I may not have time to go through long entries!

Mark anything NSFW as such! But these things are not excluded, so long as they’re connected to the asksamstuff entry you selected.

• You have to be willing to give me an address to ship things to! If you’re very private and you’d rather enter but get an art piece or whatnot via e-mail, let me know when I announce the winners. I will ask winners to e-mail me at that time with addresses and what prize they want. Please be sure to be available via e-mail! Tumblr is very wonky sometimes.

Also again, be sure to use #asksamcontest so I can see it!

WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED MAY 2ND, ON SAM’S BIRTHDAY, AND YOUR WORKS WILL BE POSTED IN A LIST FORMAT FOR EVERYONE TO BROWSE!!

Have fun, and I’ll see you then!! ;)

(And don’t be afraid to ask questions if needed.)

Can’t Sleep Without You

a/n: Not requested, but something that just popped into my head. A lot of stress and not enough sleep makes me want Shawn in my life so much.

Masterlist

~~~
It has been a few weeks since your last solid night’s sleep. You honestly are not really sure what has been going on with you or why you haven’t been able to sleep well. You’ve spent so many nights tossing and turning in bed, unable to get a peaceful rest, but then the morning comes and you practically feel like a zombie. These last four days have been the worst, and it doesn’t help that you’re in the middle of midterms so you have a lot of exams and presentations. For some reason, no matter how tired you are, you just can’t sleep well when night comes. It could be due to stress, since these last few weeks have been uncharacteristically stressful, or because you’re missing your boyfriend who you haven’t seen in a month, and you’re just tired of having to sleep without him every night.
The one good thing that has come out of the fact that you haven’t been sleeping more than a few hours a night for the past four days is that you’ve been awake to text your boyfriend whenever he has a free minute. He’s off traveling in Europe for work so the time difference is pretty big considering you’re in LA. Normally this would mean you barely get to talk to him much, since you’re both so busy. However, every night this week, Shawn’s texted you at about three in the morning LA time because that is when he’s been free, and you’ve been able to respond because you’ve been awake. He, of course, questions why you’re awake in the middle of the night, but you’re unable to offer him much of an explanation because you’re never quite sure yourself, considering you’re so exhausted, but yet sleep won’t come.
PSA for Young People
So many of you already know that I’m a chef.
In my kitchen, there’s a cook who’s my youngest one – 24. He cooks as a day job while he pursues his dream of being a musician. I have no disillusions about why he’s here: he’s here to make money to support himself while he chases his real dream.
So imagine my surprise when he comes in and seriously asks me what it takes to become a sous chef (an assistant manager, basically).
Confused, I ask him if he wants to become one; I already know that his dream is to be a musician. He looks kind of down and says that he’s been talking to his mom lately about having a “real future,” and he’s worried now about not having a back-up plan. He was a few credits shy of a two-year degree in psychology when his mom got sick and he had to back out (couldn’t afford the debt). He usually seems pretty happy with his life as a cook who does gigs by night, so I’m a little worried at the downcast expression on his face.
I’m almost 30, now, and I remember being in his position. At 22 years old, I was aimless and a constant worry to my own mother, who wanted me to finish school. I mostly went to culinary school just to shut everyone up about how I was throwing away my future.
I now have 100k’s worth of debt for a degree I didn’t even really want in a field I feel very little passion for. My passion is writing and art, and no amount of forcing myself to care about the culinary world actually inspired me to do so. I care enough to do my job well, because now I have to keep making money in order to pay back the debt I racked up trying to find myself.
So I told him to sit down, and I told him about what little I’ve managed to learn about myself in the last 10 years.
Maybe this can help some of you younger ones out there, too.
1: College is a sucky and fucking expensive place to find yourself.
Getting away from your parents and becoming an adult is a pretty amazing rite of passage, but doing so at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars a year ends up just creating problems for yourself later that you’re going to wish you’d had the foresight to avoid.
I sat him down and I asked, “How much did college cost a year?”
“Twenty four thousand,” he said.
“And what would you major in, if you went back?”
He looked lost, and I shook my head. “Don’t go to school until you know the answer to that question.”
$24,000 a year? To SEE if you want to pursue a major or not? To see if that’s a good “back up plan” for your dreams? That’s too high a price – because it’s not just money you’re borrowing, it’s years of your own life paying that money back.
2. Debt is a prison you’ll be trying to escape your entire life.
Eighty thousand dollars of debt for a bachelor’s degree – if you hate the major you chose, congratulations, because you’re essentially stuck doing a job in that field for the next twenty years in order to pay back the money you borrowed to get that degree you didn’t even really want.
The debt forces you to get a job. Having a job forces you to find shelter and food. You then have to pay bills. You need a way to get to work. More money.
You’ve basically assembled a prison for yourself because you were scared of the future, and now you have a future you hate. That fucking sucks. No amount of security is worth the unhappiness you’ll feel doing a job you can’t stand and watching your real passions wither away and die – passions you now have very little time to focus on.
3. Fuck your parents. That’s harsh, but hear me out.
I listened to my parents when I went to school. And they were sincerely worried about me and my future. They cared and they wanted me to be safe and happy and financially secure. I understand that and I appreciate their concern.
But they’re going to be dead in a few decades and guess who’s still going to be here, living with the decisions they made for me? Me.
The only person that’s with you your entire life is you. Make decisions that you want to make. Let your failures and your successes be yours and yours alone. Maybe the decisions you make don’t pan out – that’s fine. At least they were yours. Don’t let other people set you on a life path you’re not certain is right for you, because once you’re on it, it’s going to be hard to get off.
Maybe you’ll disappoint your parents by not getting that degree, but that’s not going to matter very much to you forty years from now when your soul had withered up inside your body and they’re no longer around to disapprove of your choices, now will it?
Disappoint them now. It’s okay. They’ll still love you. And they’ll be glad to know you’re happy, no matter what.
4. It’s okay to not fucking know you’re doing. Nobody does.
Not knowing what you’re doing is perfectly normal and it’s fine. You’re not stupid for not having your life figured out at 18, 22, 30, 50, or 80. Nobody knows what they’re doing. Your parents don’t know. Your grandparents don’t know. The wise neighbor to your left that lived through the Great Depression and all the World Wars doesn’t know.
When you become an adult, you realize how much of adulthood is just winging shit and being like “Golly, I hope this doesn’t turn out to suck!”
Nobody has their shit together, so don’t feel pressured to have yours together. Twenty years from now, your shit still won’t be together; the only difference between you then and you now is that you’ll have realized that it’s perfectly normal and nothing to panic about.
You may change your “passion” like 10 times in your life, and that’s also normal. Don’t get bogged down on making a decision for what you’re going to do for the next sixty years.
Because the real truth is, you don’t know. And you can’t know, nor can you really plan for it.
And that’s fine.
5. You can change your mind as much as you want.
Just be happy. Just because you wanted to be a world-class ballerina two years ago and you’ve realized that you actually want to be a world-class oil painter now doesn’t invalidate your prior passion for ballet, nor does it make the time you spent working on that dream a “waste.” The time you spent caring about ballet more than anything else in the world was a beautiful time that you shouldn’t want to take back.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that just because you didn’t care about it from the start of your life to the bitter end, it didn’t really matter. It did, and you’re the person that you are because of it.
6. Don’t be afraid.
There’s a lot of things to be afraid of in this world. Chasing a dream that doesn’t pan out shouldn’t be one of them. Just because you chased the dream of being a musician and you didn’t become world-famous doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have chased that dream. It doesn’t mean you’re foolish for having that dream, or for working so hard on it.
If you’re young, and you don’t have really heavy responsibilities (like a child you have to care for), then this is the time to do the crazy shit. To let yourself try and become the thing you always wanted. If all you have to take care of in this world is yourself, then go for something wild.
Go for the thing you always wanted. Maybe you’ll get it, and maybe you won’t. Maybe in five years you’ll realize you don’t want it anymore, and you’ll find yourself back where you started.
It was still worth the journey. And it was still worth the uncertainty.
“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”
Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky
EDIT:
7. YOU DON’T NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
Can’t believe I forgot this in my original post. YOU DON’T NEED A DEGREE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR LIFE. Look at what you really want to do and SERIOUSLY ASK YOURSELF if you NEED a degree to do it.
Writing? Drawing? Painting? Making music? Not only do you not need a degree for that shit, it’s up for debate as to whether getting one is even worth the cost. What are you learning for 20-40k a year that you couldn’t learn from the goddamn internet or just by being friends with someone else in the field???
Seriously examine whether or not your passion requires a degree. If it doesn’t, DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY for an empty status symbol.
Rhetorical Ink Reviews: Beauty and the Beast (2017 Live Action)
**Careful for SPOILERS below**
I will be the first to admit that I’m a HUGE Beauty and the Beast fan. I had the book as a kid, wanted to be Belle, and have had a large fascination with the story and believe it spurned me into wanting to draw more.
So, the Live Action adaptation had HUGE shoes to fill for me before even going in. I tried to look at the film as a standalone and not judge it based on the predecessor…a VERY hard task when watching, I might add.
My best friend saw it with me and she loved it! What did I think? Well, putting ten thoughts alone would not do my favorite childhood movie justice. So instead, I am doing a Top Ten Likes and Top Ten Dislikes. Careful for spoilers!
My Top Ten Likes of Beauty and the Beast (2017):
Originally posted by dailyplanetnerd
10. The set and costumes: Everything has layers and detail and colors that pop but also makes sense for the time period. I LOVED the costumes and even the yellow gown, considering the wardrobe “makes it” in this, grew on me quickly. As for the sets? They are beautifully ornate and have a classic “other worldly” look to them. I could watch the movie over and over to gawk at the scenery and character designs.
9. The Opening Scene: Nothing will ever live up to the deep voice of the narrator and the stained glass…but there was something so fresh about how we started on the Prince, how the dance unfolded, and how the Enchantress appeared. She looked gorgeous and the classic French scene was a welcome addition (more so than others…but we’ll talk of that soon). In any case, it is a worthy contrast from the beginning, when he’s surrounded by beautiful girls, to late when there’s only Belle.
8. Kevin Kline as Maurice: Kevin Kline is a fine actor, and he brings such a charm and dignity to the formerly bumbling character. I still like Maurice in the animated movie, but it makes more sense for Belle’s father to be an artist and hopeless romantic than a “world famous inventor.” Kline’s performance was a highlight for me and definitely added to the movie as a whole.
7. “Kill the Beast!” I’ll talk more about some other songs below, but this was by far my favorite number; this is EXACTLY what I was hoping for with this song in live action form. It does not disappoint. Speaking of “Kill the Beast…”
6. We see Gaston and Lefou learning where the castle is: A big question I had as a kid was, “How did they know where to go to find the Beast?” In this, we get our answer. Lefou and Gaston actually follow Maurice to the woods, where he believes he can route them to the Beast’s castle. This backfires on him, but in any case we learn how Gaston and Lefou knew where to go in the first place.
5. Belle is more an inventor….and a teacher: It makes sense for Belle to be as learned as she is to be more of the inventor. I loved the little scene where she does her own laundry with the contraption she made and is trying to teach a little girl to read. After having to sit through a preview for a CGI movie where the boy character is an inventor and the girl, lo and behold, wants to just be a dancer…it’s nice to see “ahead of their time” people represented in a modern movie’s version of a classic time period.
4. Lefou paying off the people to dance and help during “Gaston:”
It was a little tidbit to note for the film, but Lefou pays off the people to help dance in the “Gaston” music number; and Belle does pay for the food in the market she gets. It’s little touches like that which help to cement this story in a more “realistic” world.
3. The ensemble of side characters:
This entire cast was well-chosen. Josh Gad as Lefou? Perfection; he was born for the role! Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts?  She’s about as close to Angela Lansbury as you can get for this role, I feel. Ewan McGregor as Lumiere? I was on the fence about this casting, but it works so well. Luke Evans as Gaston? He fits the part great. Sir Ian McKellan as Cogsworth? Again, I had no clue what to think, but he may have been my favorite in the whole side cast. Even Stanley Tucci and the Wardrobe’s actress were great choices. They really did a perfect job casting the side characters…but as for the main characters…
2. Dan Stevens as The Beast/The Prince:
This WAS perfect casting! I know they’ve altered the voice and distorted it to sound similar to the animated Beast. But seriously, the motion capture work on his face and his range of emotion are perfect here. It’s hard to believe, but I care more for his character as the Beast than the animated (for reasons below); plus, the main thing: He looks SO much better as the human Prince. From the opening to the end scene, he may be my favorite character, actor, and part of the film. Definitely a genius casting choice and excellent performance!
1. All of the added scenes of Belle and The Beast learning about one another:
If I had one, minuscule complaint with the original Beauty and the Beast, it is that we don’t get many scenes of Belle and the Beast “falling in love” and getting to know one another. He saves her, gives her a library, and then they just sort of fall in love post-dance…obviously, it’s not a huge issue, since you’re pacing this out in movie format.
However, I feel this movie allowed more time for these two to connect. Also, they found common ground; first, with their love of literature, but second, with losing their mothers and how their father’s shaped who they were: The Prince’s with hate, and Belle’s with love. It was a beautiful duality and connection created between them and it helped to make the ending better and more satisfying.
Of course, especially considering the movie is based on a staple of my childhood, it CERTAINLY has flaws, as noted below.
My Top 10 Dislikes of Beauty and the Beast (2017):
10. The obvious Enchantress:
I do like the twist of The Enchantress being Agathe, a character we see throughout the story…perhaps she’s keeping the magic strong? However, there are a lot of problematic elements of her being in the movie so much. For one thing, she saves Maurice, which is good, but then when Maurice confronts Gaston, she doesn’t do anything. She could have stopped all of our conflict! Also, at the end, while she shows up and it does make sense in a technical sense…she just vanishes. Belle doesn’t even see her…what was the point? In the animated movie, the spell was broken without her having to be there. Having her there didn’t answer questions; it created more! It just seemed awkward at times.
9. Gaston’s “post-war” blood rage?
While I appreciate them trying to flesh out Gaston’s character…this was their choice? He’s got post-war bursts of rage? I love how the animated movie treated Gaston just as the jerk-bro who becomes jealous and can’t stand that Belle chooses someone over him. Here, his villainous outbursts are “justified” by his post-war blood lust. It just seemed almost like a distraction and didn’t seem warranted for me. Gaston is a near-perfect villain. Let Luke Evans do a good job of playing him without trying to make him too complex. Gaston’s not smart enough for that.
8. The unnecessary additional songs:
Maybe I’m in a minority here, but I wasn’t crazy about the new songs. The Soundtrack of Beauty and the Beast is nearly flawless. Even the special edition with “Human Again” is okay. The Broadway songs they add…are okay. “Evermore” is not a terrible song (we’ll talk more about it below), but the song about “Sunny skies” and “Evermore” are not necessary to make the story better. If you wanted to include them in a “Director’s Cut,” that would have sufficed for me…I just didn’t see the need for them here…again, I’ll touch back on this point twice below.
7. Don’t bring an arrow to a gun fight:
In the original, Gaston was a hunter, so it made sense he had multiple weapons at his disposal. It also made sense for the time period. And he hunted a lot of deer-like animals, so it seemed fitting that he would shoot an arrow at the Beast and then stab him with a knife….hunting tools for the type of game he hunted.
In this? We just full blown (literally) gun the Beast down. Gaston shoots the Beast three times in the climax. At the very least, he still uses a club like the original. It just seemed like overkill and to me, didn’t make as much sense as keeping like the original would have.
Originally posted by luuuuuke-evans
6. The rushed beginning and scenes out of place:
The opening, I loved; however, once that scene was over, the first thirty minutes seemed SO rushed! They rushed through “Belle,” then moved some scenes around, and quickly went through the reprise! There wasn’t the “wedding proposal” scene with Gaston and Belle! I did LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the reaction of Maurice and Chip, but there were little scenes that were skimmed over and rearranged that just seemed to rush the opening and didn’t let us the audience “settle down” into the film. It’s not until we’re at the scene of Belle running away from the castle that the movie starts to slow down. The editing of the movie in those places was a little disappointing to me.
5. Lefou and the lack of controversy:
Okay, so the last week has been filled with news stories about how Lefou is the first openly gay character in a Disney film. It was a huge source of controversy…but….in all seriousness……you wouldn’t really know that watching this film. It’s clear he cares for Gaston, but the animated picture portrayed that as well. He shares two seconds with a male character at the very end of the movie in a brief dance…but that’s it. All that press and controversy for a tiny scene that seems inconsequential. Eh. Come on, Disney. Commit or not; don’t try to play up something that’s halfway even developed.
4. The Enchantress’s book:
I loved the extra scenes with Belle and Beast developing their relationship over the course of a few scenes. However, one comes out of nowhere and does nothing to the plot as a whole. At one point, the Beast shows her a book the Enchantress gave him as a “joke.” It is able to take them anywhere you think of; and Belle chooses the room she was born in, where her mother dies of the plague. While I DO love a few things about this: the fact that it connects Belle and the Beast more, and it explains what happened to her…it’s never used again. The book is just a one-time only plot device. The scene it was used in was SO out of place! I would have rather Belle had known why her mother died and just talked it out with the Beast than having used this forced book that logically doesn’t fit in with the story.
3. The Beast’s Song, “Evermore:”
I don’t dislike “Evermore,” I don’t…but…in the animated movie, when Belle leaves Beast, he is so heartbroken. He lets out a howl of despair, knowing his only chance of happiness has left him, potentially forever. Here, he immediately bursts into a Phantom of the Opera style musical number. Maybe upon reviewing, I’ll appreciate it. But I loved how the original was so organic and raw…this seemed almost too Broadway and too theatrical.
Originally posted by joleenalice
2. Emma Watson’s facial expressions vs. animated Belle:
I love the original because of the animation, mainly. The expressions and line work showed SO much emotion. Now, I like Emma Watson a lot as an actress. BUT, aside from the wolf scene on….her facial expressions are so subdued. This is most apparent in “Be Our Guest.” Belle in that musical number is in AWE! She is so excited, bewildered, and amazed…but here? She just smiles and watches the show. Granted, Emma Watson would have been watching a Green Screen throughout this; but STILL. She doesn’t even seem in shock or awe…and that I sorely missed in this film. Now, after the wolves attack Belle, Watson’s acting becomes more pronounced. I just wish she could have acted a little more in-character through some of the CGI numbers.
1. The cut out comedy:
When I asked my brother if he was thinking of seeing the movie, he asked about the fight scene at the end:
Brother: “Do they have the part where Lumiere burns Lefou’s butt? Or Cogsworth with the scissors?”
Me: “No.”
Brother: “What?! How could they?”
There is so much physical comedy in the original that works; here, and yes, I understand that it is “physically” impossible some of the things they do, I still was hoping there would be more of the original comedy. For example, Cogsworth taking Belle on a tour of the castle isn’t even in the FILM! “If it’s not baroque, don’t fix it.” SERIOUSLY.
THE VERDICT?
The original is near-perfect for me. Still today, it is the better film. If you love the original and are expecting a closely faithful adaptation; they try, but it’s a miss there, because some of the best parts are either condensed or left out.
If you love Beauty and the Beast, but you’re comfortable with them altering parts and want to see new additions to the story? You’ll probably like this!
The original is still better though. If you don’t want to spend the $10 at the theatre, just wait until the DVD or Blu-Ray comes out and watch the original in the meantime.
If you’ve never seen the original Beauty and the Beast? PLEASE watch that one first; it’s better. If you’ve already seen the live action one? STILL go view the animated version; you’ll appreciate it more.
Lefou in Love
Super generic, dumb title. But anyway.
I saw this headcanon a few days ago about Stanley teaching Lefou to read and Lefou obviously using his newfound love for literature to write poems for him – I couldn’t find the original post but I’m sure others have seen it. I’ll edit this with the user who came up with it when I find it – but I decided to tweak it a little and tack my own headcanon onto the story.
(Edit: the headcanon was thought of by @le-fou-s)
I'm worried about men having sexual relations being forbidden in the torah. As a member of the LGBT community this scares me, do you think it is just because it was a different time and this was more considered a sin of man against his wife? That's all I could come up with, but I just can't make myself believe that G-d would condemn something as such between to married people who are in love.
Hi there,
You have an extremely valid concern.  I believe that a literary analysis of the material can help to illuminate why “the two verses” exist in the text and how we can better understand them as contemporary Jews.  The most quoted verses of the Tanakh which aim to indignity LGBT+ folks are Lev. 18:22 and 20:13 (”man shalt does not lie with man”) and Deut. 22:5 (“a man shalt not wear women’s clothing”).  I apologize in advanced for the massive amount of text present, but it is all important in order to validate and illuminate your concerns.
Okay, I just typed them all out! I’ll try to remember to update this when Tae and Jimin’s playlists come out. If I forget, send in another ask and I’ll type those up too! I know how hard it is to not be able to access certain things because you’re in a different country. So please enjoy~
The Beauty of Sight
So this came to me this morning after reading a Crowley x deaf!Reader by @thewildomega (which I absolutely loved) and it gave me this idea. Sorry, I wrote it at work and ran out of time to edit it lol
Pairings: Crowley x Reader, Sam & Dean (John mentioned) 2 OC bartenders mentioned.
As you walked into the bar, your hand gripped tight around your service dog’s harness, you needed to pause for a moment to get your bearings. You could hear that the bar was packed, loud voices shouting over each other to be heard amongst the chaos and the smell of stale beer and sweat permeated the air.
“Hey (Y/N)! Right on time.” You smiled at the familiar sound of the bar tenders voice and you waved in his direction.
“Hey Steve. Is my chair open?” You asked when you felt your German Sheppard, Cujo, pulling you forward.
Your typing was the only sound in the silence of your apartment. The sounds of your fingers clacking your keyboard rang out in the stark eeriness of the world at 2 in the morning. You have been awake for nearly two days (46 hours and counting), surviving off the caffeine from your semi-hourly coffee that your boyfriend, Lafayette, makes for you when he has the chance. It wasn’t your fault that you were working so hard- your boss had asked for an article that you had known would drain you for the next week or so. You want to get this work off of your chest, so you have been working non-stop on finishing this article long before it needs to be submitted to the editor.
