Reylo and why it’s a problem beyond any shipper war….

I’ve been part of many shipper wars over the years. Absolutely crazy and disgusting ones that left me wondering why I had ever joined the fandom in the first place. I have seen people call each other retarded and freaks over a ship and bully people, stalk their social media accounts… I have seen people insult actors and writers on social media over shipping - even sending them death threats (!!!!), I have seen people insult the significant others of actors because their ship wasn’t happening in real life as well… You name it, I’ve probably seen it. Some of these things also take place in the Star Wars fandom and I find them just as appalling and disgusting as I do in any other fandom. However I have become used to this insanity to a certain point and so there is a level of shipping-craziness I can ignore. Is this good? Probably not, but that’s simply what happens when you are confronted with bullshit for years and years, you become immune to it to a degree.

What I have seen in the Star Wars fandom recently though has crossed my line…and sometimes it has not just crossed it, it jumped past the line and blew itself into the freaking stratosphere of unacceptable behaviour.

Look, Reylo started out as somewhat of a crack ship, something that exists in almost any fandom. The villain + the hero… people writing fanfics about it, enjoying the idea. No problem so far because what you imagine in fics and have as a head canon can be problematic and unrealistic. As long as you are aware of it and don’t take it too seriously, everything’s cool.

The thing started to blow out of proportion when people suddenly became convinced that it will be canon. And that it’s the only acceptable, interesting canon, and that the entire Star Wars crew is playing some giant goose chase game with the fandom and only the Reylos get it. Shipping Reylo became some sort of detective game that only the truly smart people can figure out. Hidden clues, fairytale motives… Half of it seemed like we had suddenly entered a real life conspiracy theory scenario.

All of this is weird and insulting the intelligence of non-shippers but it can still be overlooked with an eyeroll. The real problems began when people started to justify why Reylo is better than any other ship and entirely unproblematic. They did not stop at plot points and hidden clues…no! In the course of defending their ship as a realistic option for the future of Star Wars, huge issues arose that made Reylo even MORE problematic instead of making it more acceptable.

Issue 1: The treatment of Finn

Some of the biggest treats of any ship are obviously other ships that involve one of the characters. In case of Reylo the biggest treat is Finnrey, ie. the ship between Rey and the character she spent the majority of time with during TFA. This ship somehow had to be discredited. Looking at the dynamic between Finn and Rey in the movie, making this ship not just unrealistic but downright horrible should be quite a challenge. Yet it was shockingly easy for the Reylo fandom. Not by using any valid plot points, but by stepping over lines that should never be crossed, not only in fandoms but in society in general: racism, homophobia and toxic masculinity!

Finn is, for many reasons, an absolutely groundbreaking and incredibly important character in the Star Wars franchise. Played by John Boyega, a man of colour, he is one of the few POC lead characters in any major franchises, cinema and TV alike. But not only that, the character himself is representing an incredibly important arc: A person brainwashed by an ideology for most of his life questioning this ideology and breaking free from it, breaking out of a facist organisation, refusing to follow their blind ideals and joining the fight against them. Finn becomes a hero in TFA for many reasons. He saves Rey, the other lead of the movie, several times and it is obvious she adores him. So the version of Finn we are presented with in TFA is that of a hero who becomes best friends with the heroine.

Somehow many members of the Reylo fandom considered it necessary to reinterpret this version of Finn to the point he became unrecognizable to justify why he is wrong for Rey. The fact that he broke out from the First Order suddenly became an act of cowardness because he was not strong enough to kill for them. His fear when he ran away from the facist organisation that turned him into nothing more but a number was interpreted as weakness. Him pretending to be a member of the Resistance was not seen as the act of someone ashamed of where he came from or someone who thought no one would trust him if they knew the truth – it was seen as a character flaw. His lie to personally get to save Rey from the First Order was interpreted as a sign of him being a pathologic liar instead of someone who would do everything for his friend. Even his motives were questioned…wondering if he REALLY left the First Order or might just be a double agent, trying to infiltrate the Resistance, even though there is absolutely no evidence for it in TFA! The fact that a man of colour is villainized, ridiculed, made out as weak and essentially a loser, who did everything just because of fear and because he is a liar, when all of his character’s storyline does originally make him look like a hero, is wrong on so many levels that I don’t even know where to start - and all of this seemingly to justify why he is not a suitable love interest for Rey! The fact that people did this with ease can’t help but make you wonder if they could do so because of their internalized racism. In this scenario a black man is made unworthy of a white heroine, even though his character was meant to be a hero just like she is. Turning a black man into a pathetic loser, even though his storyline contradicts it completely, falls right into racist behaviour patterns… especially if you do so to justify why a white character, who was constructed as a villain, is a better choice for the heroine than the black character who was constructed as a hero.

This is however just one kind of mistreatment Finn receives. Other scenarios involve Finn being gay to get him out of the way as a love interest for Rey. This way of thinking does not interpret Finn as gay for the sake of equality and representation but mainly to make him unsuitable as a love interest for the heroine. To use the sexuality of a character only to make room for a ship is obviously a totally wrong way of approaching homosexuality in fiction. Connected to this is people’s reception of some of Finn’s characteristics: for whatever reason many see Finn as unmanly, because he shows fear and seeks for support in dangerous, scary moments. This apparent unmanliness of his made some come to the conclusion that he is gay. So a man who does not fit into stereotypical ideas of how a man should be like… of course has to be gay, implying that a gay man is unmanly due to his sexuality? URGHS! If this is not the conclusion drawn by people, another popular one is that the “unmanly” Finn is not strong enough for Rey. Yet many of the people who express these ideas have no problem with Finn potentially being with a WOC who will be introduced in the Last Jedi. So he is too weak for Rey but not for an Asian woman they know nothing about? Does this scream racism? It obviously does…

Another tactic is….ignoring Finn. Removing him from all discourse, from all fan art and fan fics, erase him in pictures and switch him for Kylo Ren. Not only does this make no sense looking at the actual movie, but it removes the movie’s black lead from his rightful position. You can’t tell me it doesn’t leave a sour taste in people’s mouths if TFA’s black hero is switched for the white villain? In the end it’s the erasure of a black person, no matter how you look at it. And that is just WRONG.

Let’s summarize: If your tactics to convince people of your ship involve sidelining and demonizing a POC character or discrediting a man because he doesn’t fit into stereotypical masculine characteristics… you got a problem.

Issue 2: The racist attacks towards other fans and John Boyega

People love to pretend this is a tiny issue and does not reflect the fandom but… Something like this can never be a tiny issue! I am not saying that no vile, wrong actions took place outside of the Reylo fandom (check out the very beginning of this post…I acknowledge the usual shipper war insanity, which did take place from all sides, not denying this for a second) – however there is a difference between people insulting each other for a ship, and people sending anonymous messages full of racist slurs to people of colour in this fandom because they are against Reylo or adore Finn. That is, to put it mildly, an absolute catastrophe and the fact alone that this sort of behaviour was inspired by a ship is shocking. If you then remember that one character of this ship is in fact a facist… It has “abort mission” written all over itself. Yet people did not even manage to keep their trash inside of the fandom… it made its way into the comments section of the actors’ social media accounts. One much cited incident took place on Daisy Ridley’s instagram page, where people threw around racist insults towards John Boyega. If anyone has followed her, they will know she took down her instagram. I can only assume that this incident did not do anything positive for her view of social media. Since apparently this is still not enough, some racists feel the need to spread lies about John Boyega, turning him into a sexual predator even… I don’t think I have to explain that this is absolutely, utterly unacceptable!! From slight, internalized racism to open, inexcusable racism - we have now seen it all. This has to stop! And it will not stop by the Reylo fandom insisting it’s not all of them. Of course it isn’t. But that doesn’t make it any less of a giant problem! I could as well now draw the conclusion that Reylo fans are okay with shipping Rey with a facist because they are okay with facism…. and racism. It would be unfair to many of them, sure… but let’s be serious…can anybody be blamed if they come to this conclusion at this point? And is it such a crazy idea to assume that this ships draws in racists and facists??

Issue 3: The reinterpretation of Kylo Ren as a misunderstood anti-hero

One preferred way to make the villain Kylo Ren worthy of Rey is to try and explain why he is the way he is. This goes beyond a serious psychological analysis of why he turned into a facist murderer. It is used to turn him into a guy who is not responsible for his actions and actually kinda nice. “Poor Ben Solo was targeted by Snoke in the womb, in the WOOOOMB!! He couldn’t do anything about it. His childhood was traumatizing (why exactly we do not know), he had nobody and so of course he fell into Snoke’s hands, the poor boy! He is so lonely and misunderstood!” I can’t even count how often I have read these kinds of things. Yet in TFA itself we have examples of people who were brought up by the First Order (Finn) and abandoned by their parents on desert planets (Rey), but neither of them follows Kylo Ren’s path at this point. Neither of them is drowning in self pity and going around killing and torturing people. So resistance is possible, even IF you are related to facists and even IF some dark force is targeting you. Portraying Kylo Ren as the victim of this storyline is doing injustice to all the people who suffered from his actions. He is not a brainless puppet. He made a decision. Maybe he will realise himself that it was the wrong one… but never in Star Wars has it seemed like those who join the Dark Side did so because they were brainwashed and had no other choice. Mostly they did it for selfish reasons and from everything we can see at this point, so did Kylo Ren. Does his background story make it understandable why he became evil? It seems so. It is meant to. But it is not meant to excuse his behaviour or make him a victim. Anakin, even before he became Darth Vader, always had the potential to be evil because of his character traits. It is the same for Kylo Ren and also Luke. Luke chose to become a Jedi and Kylo Ren chose the Dark Side. So no, he is not innocent, he isn’t a victim, he isn’t an anti-hero… He is a murderer, plain and simple. So turning him into some emo Disney-Prince is nothing but disturbing. It alters the story and changes what he truly is. Many do this to make him worthy of Rey and so that they can keep the illusion alive that he can be completely redeemed and fall into her arms. This is however not logical and should not happen under any circumstances if the Star Wars writers take their own writing and the legacy of the saga seriously. A facist and murderer is no misunderstood puppy. He is evil. If people romanticise him, they have issues. But then there’s also a serial killer fandom, right? And tbh I see clear similarities between that and some of the Kylo Ren fandom…

Btw: Diagnosing Kyle Ren with all sorts of mental illnesses does not make him a better person either. Nowhere among the symptoms of depression, PTSD etc. will you find “turns person into a facist killer”. The idea alone that blaming his acts on what could be a mental illness is insulting every single person who struggles with mental illnesses! It makes it seem like they are all potential murderers! This is HORRIBLE!

Issue 4: The acceptance and downright glorification of a facist regime

If only all members of the Reylo fandom tried to make it a possibility by redeeming Kylo Ren. This is of course also problematic to the moon and back, yet it is still preferable to the other option, which is to say that he has the right to do what he does. I have seen people say that the Republic is evil and someone had to do something against it, so what if they take drastic measures? (like killing everyone??) I have seen fanfics were people wrote about Nazi experiments like it’s some kind of kink. I have seen people call Kylo Ren and Hux “extra”, as if they were some fun drama queens and not members of a facist regime. I have seen people who hope Rey becomes evil, so that she and Kylo Ren become some evil super couple. What is this meant to say about the people who do and say these things? Some of them seem to see all of this as some joke, pointing out again and again that it is not real. Sure, supporting this in real life is a huge step further than squeeing over murderers in fiction… however if you see your views as unproblematic and hope they will find support in canon… God, I don’t even want to think about this… it’s just NUTS.

Issue 5: The interpretation of abusive behaviour as sexy and romantic

To make the scenes Kylo Ren and Rey share in TFA romantic, they require a certain interpretation. Take the torture scene. People say things like “He was sitting by her side, waiting until she wakes up herself because he didn’t want to wake her” So we have a villain that ties up a heroine to get information out of her. He sits down and watches his prisoner for a certain time, waiting until the prisoner wakes up. The idea that he admires her looks in this scene is something I have often seen as an argument why this scene is romantic. However people seem to ignore that this is not, let’s say, a friend who is staying in the same place with someone and watches them sleep. This is a villain who knocked out a woman, tied her up and now waits for her to wake up to get information out of her. Is this really a romantic situation or a creepy one? Another argument as to why this scene is romantic is that he apparently holds her captive in his private rooms. I have no idea if there is any evidence for this, but is it really romantic that a villain keeps a woman imprisoned in his private rooms to read her mind? Or is it an abusive action by a kidnapper who clearly has disturbing ideas? I mean imagine you get knocked out and kidnapped by someone and then wake up in a dark room, with the person who kidnapped you watching you in silence? Would you find this creepy or cute?

Even if we take a look at the kidnapping scene itself people can’t seem to get over the fact that Kylo Ren carries an unconscious Rey. Could this be a romantic moment in another context? It surely could be. IF he had not been the one to knock her out in the first place, and IF he was not carrying her into his spaceship to get information out of her (by torturing her with his powers)! We are not watching a man carrying his unconscious love to safety. We are watching a villain carry the unconscious heroine into the enemy’s headquarters. This is a scary situation, NOT a romantic one!

Obviously we have to end this with their final fight. Arguments I’ve heard mainly talk about how he did not kill her because he has a soft spot for her. Not only does this ignore the fact that he was quite severely injured during this scene but also the obvious reason why he is so interested in her. He wants her power. He wants to train her, wants her to join HIS side of the force because she is crazily powerful. Is her unique power enough of a reason not to kill her at this point? Of course it is! People who are strong with the force are rare and special. You do not just chop their heads off if they don’t directly do what you want. So no, this is again not a romantic scene. It is a scene between the villain of the movie and the heroine where he is trying to bring her to his side. Something else I keep hearing is that they apparently exchanged romantic looks when she escapes and he lies in the snow. He was just defeated by a scavenger from a desert planet! He, the mighty Kylo Ren! He knows that there probably won’t be a way around her on his way to power! And she knows that the head of the First Order wants to get his hand on her because of her power, because of something she never wanted to be part of. This is a “Holy Shit, this is our future” – moment. This is the start of an epic fight. Not two lovers staring longingly at each other!

To summarize: All scenes between Rey and Kylo Ren get reinterpreted as romantic, even if they are creepy, abusive and potentially lethal. Dare I claim that they would not be seen as such if they would not take place between a young woman and a young man? The fact though that these two people could theoretically put together their sexual organs should not make these scenes romantic or nice or hot. That people interpret them this way is more than problematic and makes it look like they find abuse, kidnapping and trashing each other with light sabers cute, when it would honest to God not be in any other context.

Issue 6: The sidelining of Rey in favour of Kylo Ren’s character development

Sadly most arguments for Reylo seem to centre around Kylo Ren and the redemption this relationship could bring to him. No words about why it is a great idea for Rey or why it should further her character development to fall for the villain. Kylo Ren often suddenly takes the position of the hero, it becomes his storyline and she, the actual heroine, becomes an asset that is being used to make him a better person. She is supposed to save the lonely, misunderstood man from his misery. Why she should do this mostly seems obscure. Most of these scenarios are combined with Issue 3. Kylo Ren’s crimes are downplayed, so that Rey can fall in love with him and “save” him. So again… canon Kylo Ren’s actions have to be reinterpreted and canon Rey’s storyline shoved aside in favour of his.

These six issues are my main reasons to stay away from the Reylo fandom. I have mostly experienced it as a toxic space for reasons that go beyond the usual shipper war problems. Even though I have read some of the theories and tried to stay open-minded… it was simply not possible looking at all the problematic and sometimes downright disgusting things that were happening all around. I only hope for the sake of Star Wars that Reylo stays nothing but a fanon ship and that this will somewhat calm down the situation. Canon Reylo could give power to people who clearly should not have any.

The coffee shop was going awfully quiet.
Y/N looked down at her notes. Studying medicine was almost a full time job. She needed a rest.
She looked at her left wrist, glancing at her watch. Had she been there all day? The shop was about to close down; she had maybe half an hour left. Her big exam was coming at the end of the week. She thought she could use the remaining time just to catch up with her reading.
She felt like it was never going to end.
But still, it was better than what she was used to do before. Helping people instead of hurting them was something to look forward for.
She yawned and got up.
‘Sorry, is it too late to ask for another coffee?’ she said to the kind barista in front of her.
He looked at the dark circles surrounding her eyes; it was as much as he felt sorry for her.
‘Not at all, there’s still some left. Are you not tired? It’s late…’
She smiled.
‘This is why I need another round’ she replied, laughing warmly.
'Seriously, I don’t know how you keep up. I see you every night here, looking at your notes… what are you studying, if I may ask?’
Y/N sighed.
'I want to be a doctor… so…’
The door opening behind interrupted her. She looked at the costumer. He looked a little bit lost, like he didn’t even know what he was doing there. He seemed to hold an helmet in his hands and his mid long dark hair were all over the place.
She turned around; the barista lent her a cup of warm coffee. She took out her purse.
'It’s on the house’ he said, smiling.
'Oh, thank you’ she replied, grateful.
'You’ll be saving lives in the future, no need to thank me!’
She laughed warmly.
Holding the cup, she sat back at her place, buried with all the handiworks and heavy notebooks. She was exhausted. Her attention was drawn to the young man with the helmet. He looked confused.
'Er… I’ll have a coffee, please.’
Y/N looked at him more carefully. He emanated some strange posture, a mix of elegance and recklessness. He had a style of his own but it looked almost like it was effortless. From him emanated something very special, she just couldn’t put her finger on it. He grabbed the cup and sat at the table in front of her. She blushed. He looked cute. No, cute wasn’t the word. The more she stared at him, the more she thought he looked handsome. His silver eyes were to die for; they were a colour she hadn’t been used to see. His face looked familiar thought, but it didn’t matter.
He sipped on the hot liquid and their eyes locked. Y/N immediately glanced down, trying to get back in her studies. But all the words were dancing before her eyes; she was saturated with it all. She could feel the young man’s gaze on her, which made her feel particularly warm.
She heard his chair creaks and a second later; he was standing in front of her.
'Mind if I sit?’ he said.
She looked at him, thinking he had the warmest voice.
'Not enough free seats?’ she replied, glancing at the empty coffee place.
He raised his shoulders.
'You look like you could use some company.’
'Do I?’ she said, smiling weakly.
He sat in front of her.
'What you’re up to?’
'Drowning myself into studies.’
She nodded.
'That’s amazing’ he replied, taking a sheet in his hands.
He looked like he tried to understand what was written on it. He put it down on the table, looking rather discouraged.
'Most people say that, but sometimes I wonder in what I got myself into…’
He smiled, showing a straight line of white teeth.
'I never met a doctor before.’
'Never been to a hospital?’ she asked, frowning her eyebrows.
He waved his hand to avoid the question.
'I’m Sirius, by the way.’
He rolled his eyes.
'Oh you mean, Sirius is your name?’ she said, putting the emphasis on the “I”. 'That’s not a very common name is it?’
'My parents are weird.’
She laughed.
'So are mine. I’m Y/N. Nice to meet you, Sirius.’
He smiled warmly at her again. She felt her face flush with red.
'What are you doing at this hour of the night?’
He raised his shoulders, gulping at another sip of coffee.
'My best mate’s wife just gave birth, I was on my way home.’
'Really? Aw! Are they okay?’
'Yeah, they’re fine. It’s a boy, actually. His name’s Harry.’
'Beautiful’ she replied.
'I’m his godfather’ he said, looking blankly at his cup. Y/N could feel he felt really proud. When he said godfather, she saw how his eyes were sparkling.
'I want to do this, later. Helping women give birth. Its a powerful thing to do you know? Watching a woman bringing a new human being into this world, it’s so… beautiful.’
'Yeah. I never was baby crazy’ he said with a funny tone. 'But when I held the little lad in my arms, I felt like I would protect him at any cost. It was almost like… I don’t know, it was a strange feeling.’
'Wait until you get one of your own. You’ll feel this way a hundred per cent more.’
He laughed bark-likely.
'Well, I’m not there yet.’
Y/N pointed at her notes.
'Me neither.’
They heard the barista walk to their table.
'I’m sorry’ he said, looking embarrassed. 'I kind of have to throw you out, I’m closing the place down.’
'Oh, no worries’ replied Y/N, gathering her things up together. 'I’m leaving.’
She got up and Sirius followed her outside.
'It was nice to meet you’ she said, waving awkwardly at him.
'Do you live near?’ he asked, looking at the dark sky.
Sirius laughed.
'Okay, that sounded creepier than I wanted to. I’m just offering you a ride. I won’t stalk you, don’t worry. It’s late…’
Y/N looked all around. It was indeed pretty late. And she was so tired, she didn’t feel like walking.
'You’re driving a bike?’ she asked, pointing at the engine.
'I always carry an extra helmet.’
She laughed and stood next to him.
'Do you, um? In case you meet some random girl?’
He laughed.
'I’ll take the ride’ she added, feeling quite light.
What was life without a little risk, anyway?
Sirius started the motorbike. It growled loudly.
It was a hot summer day, still the cool wind made Y/N feel good. The moving motion and the freeing sensation made her feel like she was flying. It was waking her up a bit as they were heading towards her tiny flat, down the city. She felt more alive than she had felt in some time.
When they reached her doorstep, she was disappointed it didn’t last longer.
She gazed at Sirius, who was sitting on his bike, looking at her hungrily.
'Thank you’ she said, shyly. 'It was really nice of you.’
'Pleasure was all mine, Y/N.’
She turned her back. She closed her eyes, waiting to hear the sound of the growling motor again.
'Sirius?’ she shouted, turning to face him again.
He turned around.
'Do you want to come upstairs? Have some tea maybe?’
He looked at her in the eyes and bit his lip.
'You sure?’

Y/N nodded. She needed to focus on something else. How long had it been since she became intimate with somebody for the last time? She couldn’t recall.
With everything that had happened over the past year…
'Yeah, come on in.’
Sirius followed her inside.
When she turned the key into the lock, she swallowed.
'It’s no palace, but it’s home.’
They entered her flat. Like she had just stated, it wasn’t a big place. You couldn’t tell where the kitchen ended or where the living room started.
Y/N threw her keys on the coffee table and managed to free it.
‘Sorry for the mess, I have notes everywhere’ she said, embarrassed.
‘I don’t mind, really. You shouldn’t worry about it.’
She turned around and smiled to Sirius. He looked so irresistible.
Like if he had read in her mind, he stepped closer to her and stared into her eyes.
She felt so little out of a sudden. She looked down and scratched her neck.
‘I’m sorry, I’m not used to that…’
‘To what?’ replied Sirius, looking amused.
‘I never invited a stranger over, you know?’
He smiled, again, which made her heart pound faster.
‘Would you show me?’ she asked, clenching her grisp on his shirt.
He smacked his lips unto hers and grabbed her from the floor. She got lost in the kiss, sliding her fingers in his locks. Sirius pushed her gently on the small counter where he slowly put kisses on her collarbone. Y/N let out a moan, which he found extremely cute.
She pulled off his shirt and looked at his stomach. She slid a finger on his chest as she admired him.
He managed to unzip her jeans and in all honestly, she couldn’t wait for them to drop on the kitchen floor.
Y/N grabbed his neck and pulled him near her so she could kiss him deeply again. Someway, deep inside, it set down a fire in her stomach and she was unstoppable.
It only managed to get Sirius eager for her and she started to unbuckle his jeans as well. His belt fell on the floor with a loud toc as he growled into her mouth.
‘Fuck me’ she whispered in his ear, which set him on fire.
He ripped out her panties and took out his hard on from his underwear. There, on the counter, he penetrated her with such force she had a gulp of surprise.
‘Are you alright?’ he asked her.
She smiled.
She arched her hips so he could take her more and she moaned of pleasure, juice dripping of her sex as he moved back and forth into her.
Sirius pulled her shirt off and released her gorged breast, sucking on each of her nipples. Y/N scratched his back and he let out a loud growl.
‘Playing rough, are we?’ he said, with a smirk on his face.
He stopped moving into her, turned her body around so she could face the backlash and started to pound into her again, this time from behind.
Y/N let a big moan escape her mouth as she took his full length, not knowing what to do with herself anymore. Her legs were starting to shake with pleasure as Sirius moved into her. She was slowly feeling all of her senses at the same time.
Sirius stopped moving and bent, knees on the floor. He spread her wet cheeks and started to lick her hole, applying pressure on her clit, lapping slowly, tasting her juices.
‘Fuck!’ she shouted, feeling she was about to cum.

Both panting and sweating, they stared into their eyes.
She knew.
She got off the counter and put her clothes back on.
‘I’ll be back’ she said, running to her bedroom.
She closed the door behind her, feeling tears coming to her eyes. She had tried to leave this life. She had left everything to lead a normal existence. Somehow, her past always seemed to catch up with her. She could never put this behind her.
Y/N approached her night table. She opened the second drawer and grabbed something at the bottom of it.
‘Shit’ she mumbled to herself.
She hid it behind her back and got out of her room. Sirius was standing in the kitchen, replacing his hair correctly. He turned around and gave her a big smile.
Y/N pointed the object at his chest.
‘Who are you?’ she asked with a cold voice.
Sirius frowned his eyebrows.
‘Who are you?’ he answered, looking for his wand. He had left it in his coat.
‘I left everything to escape you people. I knew this was no coincidence. You were sent to spy on me, isn’t?’
‘What are you talking about? I didn’t know you were-‘
Y/N moved her hand, making her wand twitch.
‘Are you working for him?’
Sirius was shocked.
‘For who?’
‘You a Death Eater?’
‘What! No way! Hey, listen to me, I’m not-‘
He waved his hands in the air, feeling threatened.
‘If you’re going to kill me, at least tell me your full name’ he said, stepping back.
He was now standing in the living room.
‘It doesn’t matter. I got away from all this bullshit, I specifically told my brother I didn’t want to do anything with it. Go tell him he has to stop chasing me. I’m not with them anymore.’
‘I don’t know who your brother is, love, but I swear, I’m not a Death Eater. I’m not.’
Sirius looked at the little coffee table where she had tried to clean the papers away. He peeked at the sheet above where she had written her name with a delicate calligraphy at the top.. With fearful eyes, he glanced at Y/N again.
‘Y/N. You’re a Lestrange?’ he whispered in a low voice. ‘Tell me you’re not…’

Theory: Frank Miller's recent work is good, but it isn't getting the right colour treatment

Above: I recoloured that recent Wonder Woman cover Frank Miller did for DC last week. Mine on the left, the published version on the right. I did this to demonstrate a theory I have that despite the general critical consensus, there’s actually nothing wrong with Frank Miller’s recent art- it’s just that it isn’t getting the appropriate colour treatment.

So- I’m a cartoonist who mostly writes and draws his own material, but in January of this year I tried out to be a colourist for Frank Miller at DC. Not because being a colourist for the comics has always been my dream, but because I kept seeing some pretty awesome drawings of his being critically savaged. People were talking as if his recent drawings were the scrawlings of a lunatic. I felt like I knew why this was, and how to fix it.

I should add a disclaimer- this post isn’t a criticism of DC or the colourist who currently works on Frank’s art, who I’ve talked to, and who I learned was selected by Frank himself. The colourist who did the original work on the pieces I’m about to show you is an extremely technically accomplished person who does things I could never do. I’ve tried colouring like this guy does. It’s pretty hard!

Nor is this intended as a lionisation of my own abilities. Instead, this is a personal argument championing one type of colouring over another, and a defence of Frank’s recent work. 

Below is one of the Miller covers I recoloured for DC. My colours on the top, and the published original on the bottom. Here you can see the discrepancy between the potential I saw in these drawings, and what was actually being published.

I spoke to a couple of editors at DC and the consensus seemed to be that they loved what he was turning in. So why did every blog I read think it was the worst work he’d ever done? I believed I had the answer: that the colour treatment DC’s artists were giving to his art was, while technically accomplished, not flattering to the type of work he was doing.

My friend Julian Dassai said it best: “His work is dynamic and, in some cases, verging on abstract. Trying to color his stuff with representational lighting and rendering is pointless, whereas a flat, graphic approach (or just leaving it in b&w) allows the energy to jump off the page.”

My colour job, followed by what DC actually published:

Frank is an artist who is constantly evolving, and his new work seems to be somewhere between Jim Mahfood, Sergio Aragonez and Ralph Steadman. It doesn’t make sense to colour him as if he’s an Image comics artist from the 90’s, all gradients, shadows and shiny metallic finish.

All these images I’ve posted so far have two things in common- they were all widely dunked on and derided when they first went online, and they all prompted responses of “WHOA, COOL!” and “I LOVE THIS!” after I recoloured them and circulated them amongst my friends. So what happened here is ol’ Frank became the butt of everyone’s joke when actually, there was nothing wrong with his drawings.

So how did this happen?

Well, check out Frank’s work in the Sin City comics. When Frank works in black and white, he’s a one-man band. But when he works in colour, he hangs back and gives the colourist a lot of space. He knows that colours and inks are two halves of a whole.

Above is a page from 1986’s The Dark Knight Returns. You can see just how much trust Frank placed in his colourist, Lynn Varley, to finish his work. As you can see, some of those panels aren’t even THERE in the original inks. Panel 6 is just an empty box. 

This approach has been proven to work very well, but the problem is it places the burden of the image’s success or failure squarely on the colourist’s shoulders. And if the colourist and Frank aren’t on the same page, we end up with covers that are the laughing stock of the whole internet.

It’s funny- even Lynn Varley could screw up colouring for Frank. Two years after their critically acclaimed work 300, they made their most widely panned book of all.

Lynn’s computer colouring on Dark Knight Strikes Again has all the invention and nuance of her colouring on Frank’s earlier work. However, to my eyes, her experimental digital art just isn’t a good fit for Frank’s traditional, brusque inkwork. The artwork in the book suffered a generally poor reception from fans and critics alike. 

I took a pass at colouring DK2, too. I include this not to throw shade on Lynn’s work, which has definite and strong merits of its own. Nor do I want to suggest that I’m a better colourist than Lynn (I’m definitely not). Rather, I just want to use a flat colouring approach to demonstrate that there’s nothing wrong with Frank’s pencils and inks in even the book that was generally regarded to be his worst. His lines have character and energy and do everything they need to do to tell the story, and with the right treatment would have looked pretty great.

We can apply the same lessons to Frank’s most recent work. I’d read a whole comic that looked like either of the recoloured images below.

DC liked my stuff, but they’re happy with the guy they already have colouring Frank’s work, and so my experiment has to run its course. Still, I want to believe that there’s something in here that we can all learn from.

It’s important to pick the right team, and to utilise a stylistic approach that’s harmonious with what the rest of the group are doing. If you don’t, you might just end up with something no-one likes even though you worked your butt off. As we’ve seen, it can even happen to an exceptional talent like Frank. That’s a scary thought.

Bless my wonderful Owari no Seraph Amino family. We were busy talking about OnS as usual; more specifically, the physically appealing demons like Gekkoin and Raimeiki, when I threw the glorious idea of Demon Urd in there.

Promptly, I was asked to draw this idea and agreed to sketch a demon version for the most beautiful vampire there ever was and will be.

The clothes were the hardest choice. At first I wanted to go with something tight, black leather or latex to be exact, but simply decided against it because Gekkoin already rocks that look perfectly. Besides, the edgy look does not suit him that much.

Then I thought about something more ancient since he is a very old vampire after all, and went with the fashion of ancient Greece. This idea got scrapped as well because there was too much fabric for my liking. I mean, a demon could probably make use of a more revealing oufit after all. Just look at Asuramaru’s not so subtle attempt to lure people in with his legs! The slit in his robe is very noticeable.

Wanting to add some golden accessories and see through robes, I settled onto a more egyptian styled look with rubies adorning the golden rings.  The idea of an egyptian look for him was also slightly inspired by @hanayakani‘s AU. I was browsing through their gallery a couple of weeks ago and was simply enthralled by their beautiful work. It made me want to try drawing a picture with very detailed adornments for once as well, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so.

 He is wearing shackles due to the demon curse having ensnared him, otherwise they would be missing altogether. His long, slender horns are adorned with various rings and delicate chains as well to underline his sheer elegance. A see through white robe is barely covering the exposed chest, contrasting the tanned skin, while sharp eyes the colour of glistening jewels seem to pierce his prey. One thing I have to add though: I have not researched any kind of Egyptian fashian beforehand, meaning the style is probably completely off and doesn’t fit any era at all. Oh well.

Yes, I will continue this at one point; mostly because one member of my Amino family currently role-plays as Demon Urd and needs a better profile picture than this shaky mess.

Diamond Edge in Toronto

(hi I’m writing this on my phone bc I don’t have my laptop with me I promise I’ll format it after just enjoy)
Even before the concert started they were showing svt’s mvs onstage and we were all screaming the fanchants
They did their opening ments in English and everyone sounded so cute
Woozi stepped forward and waved a little and was like “hi~”
HOSHI WAS THERE and he just stepped forward and all of us were going insane like he was just standing there
Then he finally was like WHAT TIME IS IT NOW and we were all like 10:10!!!!
Dokyeom said while they were doing Pretty U he saw all the fans doing the hand wave during his part; “Carats are very good dancers”
They performed Beautiful and we all held up our banners that were given to us as part of the fan project
Then it was performance unit’s time to shine!!
They did Swimming Fool and everyone looked so GOOD and Hoshi looked so so happy to be onstage
Then there was a small VCR break where we saw fetus pictures of the boys (everyone screamed really loudly at Jun’s and Woozi’s photos)
Then they did a school version of Mansae (kind of like their MAMA performance)
They did Boom Boom and we could still kind of see them onstage setting up the formation so naturally everyone Screamed
Dino and Coups came out and filmed for Going Seventeen and they had a dance battle
They got Aegyo King Jeonghan to say “Toronto I love you!” and send us all hearts
SEUNGKWAN SANG HELLO BY ADELE and he was absolutely killing it
Dino started singing something and dancing to it as well but all the members stopped him because he started doing Michael Jackson hip thrusts lol
Then it was vocal team’s turn and they did Habit (Seungkwan and DK’s live high notes will change your life)
They also did a dark, vampire version of Don’t Listen in Secret complete with key changes, red and black velvet outfits and thrones and tables with candles
The hip hop team came out and they did Un Haeng Il Chi and it was so lit like honestly everyone was so hype and you could tell the hip hop team was feeling it too
They did Check In too which was still pretty fcking lit
The performance team came back and did a remix of OMG which had way more hardcore rock vibes like they headbanged so much
They also did Highlight and everyone SCREAMED Minghao’s “I’m like a bird” line
All thirteen of them did Crazy in Love and Chuck
They took a little break and Hoshi taught us the thumb move during the chorus
Then it was time for My I and needless to say everyone went nuts for it bc they looked so GOOD
Vocal team came back out and did We Gonna Make it Shine and honestly if you thought the song was good in the video it is a thousand times better live
Then hip hop team did If I and honestly I kind of died at their little hip move at the end
Coups was bopping around at his mic while the other members sang and it was so fcking CUTE his arms were out and he was smiling and looking at us
We got an OT13 version of Rock and everyone was killed by OT13’s body rolls
Then they gathered to talk and Vernon was like “I have some bad news for you guys… this next song is our last song” and we were all like noooo but we knew there would be an encore because we had another surprise project for them
They killed Don’t Wanna Cry like do I have to explain this
They left and we were all chanting SEVENTEEN SEVENTEEN SEVENTEEN before finally they came back out and did Shining Diamond and an encore version of Healing
Then they all lined up to do their goodbye ments and that was the time for our fan project
As Hoshi (the first one in line) lifted up his mic to say goodbye we all raised our banners
I was in the balcony and was part of the message to seventeen so we held up either white or red coloured cards that said something in Korean
Their faces when they realized we were sending them a message were all so precious like they squinted to see what it said and then you could see the amazement on their faces
They all said they were so so touched by the message and everyone was amazed bc since it was their first time in Toronto they didn’t expect people to show up to the airport but there were so many more people there than they expected
I think we all just made them really happy and they made us really happy
ONE LAST THING Minghao did his entire ending ment in English and he kept glancing at Vernon to make sure he was pronouncing everything right what is their ship name again

Alright this is going to be a long post…

My personal style can be described as classy and elegant with a twist of edgyness. Think elegant Kendall Jenner x Bella Hadid x Ulyana Sergeenko candid & formal photos.

Although it happens that I put less effort into dressing for university and other unimportant stuff like just running errands or do some small shopping in town because frankly, I don’t care and do not have to impress anyone with my 900€ shoes and 3,500€ coat. I live in a small town, so this just adds to me feeling indifferent. It doesn’t happen often, but still.. it does happen. However, when I am in a big, fancy town, I of course dress to impress and like I’m about to see my worst enemy. I think that this should go without saying haha!

Aside from that my style is as I have described above.

I used to buy stuff from H&M and Zara a lot and mix it with high-end designers, but now it all shifted to just high-end designers. It’s just personal preference. I am fed up with the poor quality and designer knock-offs. I very much cherish the improved quality that I have with designer pieces. Although the quality from oh so many pieces is pretty ridiculous too, to be honest! Do not think that designers necessarily offer the very best quality for their price. Most of the time the prices they charge can’t possibly ever be justified with the quality of their merchandise. It’s just the name you are paying for, really. This is why my #1 mission is always to look for the best quality in anything. I can see a Valentino dress that is so god damn gorgeous and not like the fabric. Or the beads and embellishments seem to be very cheap. I will not buy it, although I regret it because it’s stunning but whatev.

Understand that I am on a monthly budget just as everyone else is. Yes, I might have a whole wardrobe bursting with luxury and designer names, but I have amassed this all over years, with roughly 80% of my own money and 20% of SD money. I am a very practical person and buy clothing, shoes and jewellry that I am able to wear every day and for any occasion. There are some occasional SPECIAL purchases too, of course. But only when I see something seriously special. I had a phase in which I bought at least 20 pairs or so of Louboutins.. and how many have I actually worn out? Maybe…6? This, too, taught me to be practical.

As for jewellry, I generally don’t wear jewellry except for my gorgeous silver ring that looks like a flower made of tiny diamonds, with a beautiful big black pearl in the center of it. It is very special to me. As for earrings, I alternate between beautiful pearl studs when I want to look all preppy, classy and elegant (I think that they also make me look younger, funnily enough) and diamond studs and chandeliers sometimes for daytime and evening as well. I don’t care. I wear stuff that is supposed to be worn in the evenings in the day, too. It adds to the ‘uniqueness’ of my style which sets me apart from others. 

Please mind that I am not going to drop designer names (xcept for four) because well, I don’t want to seem like an arrogant, overly spoiled brat who just wants to show off. No! I am happy to provide you with pictures or whatever in private, if a certain piece has piqued your interest or if you want to know which pieces I exactly have, so just gimme a shout.

So, my general staple pieces for the day would be:

* A few pairs of skinny jeans - lighter denim colour without wash, one distressed black one (I like the slits at the knee), a normal black one, a mid-dark denim with a subtle wash. I only wear skinny jeans at this point in my life, with a seldom exception. Full length and I very much like ankle length or a little over the ankle in summer. Skinny jeans accentuate my lean and long legs - and I like to shift focus on my legs. 

* Skinny black leather pants. Normal ones, not like the Givenchy & Saint Laurent zipper thing.

* This seldom exception would be one pair of black high-waisted, perfectly tailored trousers that are overall just a little bit wider. 

* Two pairs of black cigarette trousers like Audrey Hepburn used to wear.

* As for t-shirts and tank tops, I like basic black and white ones. Round-neck, V-neck, doesn’t matter. I do not like any kind of prints unless it’s an okay print. Well I guess I am guilty of owning the black & white Balmain tank tops with the three golden buttons on the left shoulder haha but these are the only printed shirts in my wardrobe because they do add a little bit of sophisticated edge to my day looks.

* Elegant silk blouses are also a must in my wardrobe. Here, I like playful pussy bow blouses and a bit more ‘daring’, statement blouses. Although I do not like statement or ‘IT’ pieces in general and usually stay far away from them. I like to wear these blouses with my black high-waisted trousers.

* I am a sucker for coats. I own a lot of coats. Fur and normal ones. I adore a good camel coat and am also a sucker for military-inspired coats. The colours of my choice, for normal coats, would be camel, black and navy at this time. Other colours for fur coats.

* I fucking love capes and have quite a few. Black ones, mid-length to the middle of the thigh I’d say.

* Jumpers / Longsleeves / etc. Here, I am always looking for good quality cashmere, and wool. Mainly wearing them in autumn and winter. I like turtleneck pieces a lot.

* Warm Scarves - all my scarves are of a cashmere/silk mix. I also wear them when it’s cold or just throw them over my shoulders on a chilly summer night when I’m out at a dinner party or so. 

* Fancy Scarves - silk. I sometimes wear them under/over a blazer, with a normal button down shirt and a high-waisted skirt. 

* Skirts - one high-waisted black leather mini skirt, a black high-waisted heavy wool skirt / knee length

* Shorts - different pairs of mini denim shorts, beautiful lace mini shorts, black leather mini shorts

* Blazers - oh boy. I love blazers. I have so many. Again, black and navy coloured blazers. I have this beautiful slim, perfectly tailored black blazer that is a bit longer than a usual blazer - just beautiful. one of my fav pieces.

* Jackets - love. black leather jackets for the edge, but elegant leather jackets. I also dig black leather jackets with a beautiful embroidery on the back side. and uhm *coughs* of course the classic - the Chanel jacket. normal black and beige. is an absolute must have. and so versatile! I have the cropped versions as they fit my body far better than the regular length ones.

* Dresses - oh uh. I collect dresses. For any occasion. However I prefer short dresses, above knee length and mini dresses. Do have a couple of mid-calf length dresses, though. Here I say that the fancier the dress, the better. But it still has to look absolutely beautiful and not dramatic. Although I would have loved to have that black/red and red Proenza Schouler ostrich feather dresses just because they look so badass.. but where the hell would I have worn it to.. that’s the other question haha! I love brocade, I love silk, I love lace, I love velvet dresses. My dress colours are usually black and red but I also do have some white, silver, blue dresses. As for the regular shopping day in town, I just wear a long black dress with gladiator flats and that’s it. Dun care. Bye, Felicias. 

* Shoes - sexy black high pumps, the famous espadrilles (I like wearing them in summer with my ankle-length skinnys), the famous Balenciaga boots with the cutouts at the sides and the two buckles with silver hardware, not gold (literally every Russian jetset baby has these boots omg haha), velveteen ballet flats, silken/satin ballet flats, gladiator sandals (which are bound up to the knee), sexy suede overknee boots - I like my overknee boots to be of mid-thigh length, sneakers (have so many omg..leather and suede (apart from the one pair of Nike sneakers I like to wear on long haul flights. various models, various colours), various black combat boots that look more delicate than ugly and harsh, lace-up high heels, platform pumps, I LOVE high heels! gosh… it’s hard to describe without naming the designers and the particular models because it all sounds so vague and ugly haha! I like classy shoes as much as I like very special models like embellished shoes or just some fancy colours, etc.

* Silk Pajamas - I have a pair of baby pink ones and a pair of baby blue ones.

* Lingerie - am a lingerie addict, but which girl isn’t?

* Silk Robes - long dressing robes, short morning robes, everything. Black, white, red, and the pastel colours from above (babypink, babyblue)

* Invest in good stockings! Quite a few pairs of normal black ones. And black ones with the sexy seam at the backside for more..well, special evenings and occasions ;)

* Hats - Maison Michel; different colours, made of felt 

These are pretty much my staples. I am so sure that I have forgotten many many other things, but this should suffice. I have written a post on my personal fragrance choices which you might want to check out if you are interested in this as well!

Disclaimer: The result of the sample drawing in this tutorial may not look very much like Tenka/SLBP CG because I’m using a drawing that ISN’T made to look like SLBP art style (the original drawing style of the lineart matters), but the colouring style still applies.

if we’re talking parallels and role reversals, i think another reason why eva/sana just makes, so much sense, is because they both would showcase that so, so well, from season 1 to season 4.

in season 1, you had eva, and she was the one going through a, for the lack of better words, “identity crisis”, based on friendships going wrong. she was facing loneliness, isolation, feelings of exclusion. every relationship was going wrong. whether it be with her past friends, her mother, with jonas, with isak … until she found the girl squad, and found a place in there. 

and we see how eva saw sana in season 1, as a strong, determined, fearless girl, so sure in her opinions and strategic with her thoughts. so confident in herself. so composed and collected. and with sana telling eva that she found eva “the prettiest, (present) here”, eva all of a sudden fixed her posture, she sat up straight, she allowed herself to feel the effects of those words. she glances sideways at noora, who’s seen as this epitome of beauty, and then glances down at herself, and then back at sana, and has this air of confidence about her, in that one small moment. she lets herself feel that. she lets herself feel beautiful and wanted and pretty, by a girl who she views as so sure of her opinion. that, if sana’s saying this, then it … must hold some weight to it, that she saw me, from them all, she saw me.

and i think it’d be a beautiful parallel, a complete role reversal, for eva to be sana’s sana. we’ve seen eva and, she’s noticed sana. whether it be in episode 1 with the pizza, or episode 3, with them both wearing almost the same colour, as opposed to everyone else in the bus meeting wearing white, they both wore black/grey, or whether it be in episode 5, where eva sees sana feel confused and left out, and straight away feels guilty. we’ve seen eva, see sana.

there’s a reason why the pepsi max girls said, that “noora is so pretty”, but that sana couldn’t compare. because once upon a time, eva felt that way too. and whilst eva and sana’s struggles aren’t the same, hence why eva didn’t wear black like sana did in the bus meeting, but was wearing grey, grey is atleast more closer to black, than it is to white.

and it’d be beautiful to see eva, a girl who’s become so sure, happy, carefree and one with herself, to help sana, to be there for sana. to reassure sana, to encourage sana. to listen to sana. to have eva say her own version of “she’s the prettiest, here” to sana, just like how sana did with eva in season 1. because this time, it’s sana. it’s sana who’s so unsettled and unsure and walking on shaky ground, perhaps something eva isn’t used to seeing at all, which is why it resonates with her so much, because, lord, she knows how isolating and painful it can get.

and that’d bring it all, full circle.

their’s a fair bit of contention around the best method for grayscale painting and whether it even worth labouring over in the first place

but its a good skill to learn, especially if your interested in concept design, which i know a lot of you are ;^)

the whole grayscale painting shebang can seem daunting and confusing but once you get the basics down its a lot simpler than it seems 

not everyone is gong to use the same technique, and at the end of the day its whatever gets the job done. i’ll be showing one of the methods used most often by those in the industry, and what i think gives you the cleanest end result

start off with your grayscale under painting or sketch, this was a rougher than i normally use, but it worked out well for the piece

I don't know if you have noticed, but they have some serious clothing issues in season 12. Seasons 1-11 we just had Sam and Dean. But now that there's Mary, they can't all wear plaid. Because there would be too much flannel with three Winchesters. I'm being serious. I've rewatched season 12, and there's no episode where all three Winchesters wear plaid. One of them always has to sacrifice the hunter look.

Yeah, they don’t all wear it all the time anyway - Dean’s always had a bunch of stock shirts which are so boring he can wear them all the times he’s going to get killed or whatever gets him covered in blood to the point that he can’t use it any more :P Sam has slightly more variety, I think, because he doesn’t wear as many block colours in general, wears his shirts buttoned up so Dean can get away with wearing a block colour shirt and t-shirt, and Sam’s on the wrong side of the self-imposed class divide so doesn’t wear henleys either, all adding up to him needing at least subtle stripes on his shirts a lot of the time… Sam wearing boring grey in 11x22 should have been a warning something pretty horrific was going to happen to him because that’s Dean’s choice of colour for “I’m about to have a bad day and I don’t know it yet” which he at least also mixes into his regular wardrobe to add the element of surprise :P

Buuut yeah I bet there was at least 1 time they had a moment where they did all wear plaid and looked at each other and had to work out who had to go change immediately.

Anyway since we have a whole season now, let’s look at Mary because I like looking at Mary :D

It’s not just fish hips and cat thumbs that are the result of small changes in genetic control switches. David Kingsley has also discovered a few human traits that work in the same way, with the most immediately obvious being skin and hair colour. A few years back, he and his team discovered that the DNA around a gene called Kitlg, found in many animals including both sticklebacks and humans, seemed to be chock-full of control switches. The protein encoded by Kitlg (known as Kit ligand) is a biological multi-tasker, helping to make blood, sperm and cells packed full of the dark pigment melanin. It’s this molecule that determines your coloration. More melanin and you’ll be darker, less and you’ll be lighter. Kingsley and his team discovered that playing with these switches in sticklebacks changed their coloration, making them darker or lighter depending on which ones were missing. So they took the same DNA region from humans and broke it down into pieces, testing each one to find out when and where it was active.

Sure enough, they tracked down one specific control switch that could turn on the gene only in skin and hair. Then when they looked at the DNA sequence of this switch in West Africans and white Europeans, they noticed a consistent difference in a region more than 300,000 letters (300 kilobases) away from Kitlg. Not as far as the distance between Sonic Hedgehog and its limb control switch, but still a long way off. One single letter was switched: an A in the Africans, a G in Europeans. Just one.

Next, they tested whether this change affected how well the switch could turn on Kitlg, by looking at the two different versions in skin cells grown in the lab. They discovered that it wasn’t as simple as an on/off (or rather, black/white) switch. Instead, the version in Europeans wasn’t quite as effective at activating the gene as the African version was. A quick calculation in their paper suggests that having two copies of Kitlg with the European switch makes a person’s skin around six or seven shades lighter than someone with two West African versions. Because you have two copies of every gene – one from Mum and one from Dad – the effects of the switches will be more apparent if they are both the same, while having one of each will give a colour somewhere in the middle.

However, there are around 30 shades between a typical Nigerian’s dark skin and a pale European complexion, so the difference in the Kitlg switch only explains part of our skin colour, rather than the whole thing. David suspects that there are probably other similar genes and switches out there that add up to give each person their particular hue. But even so, just a single letter can make a big difference to what you look like. This is true of hair colour as well as skin. In 2014 Kingsley and his team published another paper showing that European blondes have a single letter difference in a control switch around 350,000 DNA letters (350 kilobases) away from the Kitlg gene, compared to dark-haired people. Again, it’s a tiny change miles away from the gene, but it has a big impact. This subtle alteration in blondes means that a transcription factor protein called Lef can’t stick quite as well to the DNA of the control switch, so it’s not as effective at turning on Kitlg activity. It’s not on/off, but it’s enough to significantly cut down the melanin production in hair cells, and make them fair.

Growing up in the 1980s, I would often hear jokes about blondes being stupid – and as a brunette (to my shame) I would often repeat them. I now know better, but many people apparently don’t. In a news article about his hair colour research, Kingsley attacked this long-held stereotype, saying, ‘It’s clear that this hair colour change is occurring through a regulatory mechanism that operates only in the hair. This isn’t something that also affects other traits, like intelligence or personality. The change that causes blonde hair is, literally, only skin deep.’ Blonde jokes aside, his work on coloration has more profound implications. As I’m writing this chapter, the United States is fracturing under the stress of racial tension following several high-profile incidents of white police officers killing unarmed black people, and a horrific racist shooting in a church. Countless numbers have been unfairly judged, oppressed or killed throughout history because of the colour of their skin, yet it boils down to little more than a handful of DNA letters in a few genetic switches. For a species named after our intelligence – Homo sapiens translates as ‘man who knows’ – we really are very stupid at times.“

Fidget Pad: $10 AUD, One Stop TV Shop

Dimensions: 7.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm

A local dollar shop near me has a really good display of fancy metal spinners, but most of them are far too expensive for me to justify (even with the whole “but I can review it for the blog” excuse). Doesn’t stop me from looking, of course! They did, however, have the fidget pads out, including an open one for testing, and of course you all know what happened next…

It’s hard to compare them to the fidget cubes, because they have a lot of different functions and textures, but my general impression is this: I like it less than my Zuru cube, but a lot more than my knock-off cube. If you have to pay $10 AUD for a knock-off fidget cube, I’d get the fidget pad instead: you get more for your money.

I find the rounded peanut shape pleasant to hold. It doesn’t have the weight of the Zuru cube, and it’s made from the same slightly grippy plastic as the fake cube, but the curved shapes feel more comfortable to hold in my hand in the way the cube just doesn’t. I like holding the fidget pad so much that I wish there were a higher-quality brand name version available, just for the smoother plastic and weight.

(In one area, the fidget pad beats even the Antsy Labs fidget cube hollow: the USB-stick lanyard-style attachment, meaning it can be added to a keychain or a neck lanyard. I don’t understand why the cube can’t offer something similar, since it makes it so much easier to not lose - it’s a small addition, but a really important one!)

I’ll work my way through each of the eight functions:

Joystick: glides smoothly in all directions with more play than both knock-off cube and Zuru cube.

Click buttons: two loud, two quiet. Quiet ones are silent, which is better than most knock-off fidget toys offer, but the loud ones are the loudest buttons I’ve ever heard (second only to the switch). If you really like the noise, you might like this.

Textured spinner: spins easily. Silent if you roll a finger over it, loud if you flick it into a spin.

Gears: according to the back of the box info, there’s two small gears meant to simulate a combination lock. They really don’t do this at all. They rotate under force with clicking sounds, but they don’t feel like gears or a lock. This is, for me, the worst function. The gears on even the knock-off cube are much better.

Textured rub/worry stone: I like the feel of the rough, raised dots and I wish they covered more of the pad rather than just four thin lines. I think texture seekers will like this part. There’s a lot more space for more textures on the pad they should have used, though!

Paddle switch: it’s a sliding switch attached to a coil of wire that gives it resistance when you push it down the slot. The fidget cube has nothing like this function and I really like it - it reminds me of opening a ziplock bag.

Flat spinner: turns smoothly with a gentle plush of the fingertip. I love how it’s slightly curved to fit the curved base of the pad - it’s really nice to cup in my hand. Now that I have this for good spinning, I really have no use for my knock-off fidget cube.

Switch: very, very loud. (If you love loud clicking noises, get this!) Supposedly, you can pivot this gently for silent movement, but it’s too stiff for this (unlike the switches on both fidget cubes). Even used gently, it’s noisy. Because it’s curved, though, you can actually rock it from side to side without ever raising your fingertip, just by leaning your finger back and forth. You can do this a little on the Zuru cube, but with some bending at the knuckle; you can’t do it at all on the knock-off.

For lip and face stimmers, I find this harder to use than the Zuru cube: the flat and textured spinners are the only easily manipulated bits without use of fingers. It’s really better for hand and finger fidgeting.

I’m really surprised by how much I like the fidget pad. It’s the same idea with a few different functions in a rounded case that is much nicer to hold and fits more naturally in my hand. I’d actually love to get a higher-quality version of this, because in many respects I think it superior in design, for hand and finger stimming/fidgeting, to the fidget cube!

I have to observe, though: after buying the Zuru cube on Monday and the fidget pad today, my thumb pain is bad, and that’s with trying to be attentive to my pain while using. Stimmers with chronic hand, finger and thumb pain need to use these carefully, because they all require small, repetitive, constant movements to use (exception being the worry stone sides). Stimmers without still shouldn’t use these for hours at a time. I’m going to put both in a drawer and not use them for a few days while trying to rest my hands, because they’re the worst toys for my hands, no exceptions.

This is completely unrelated to Dresden Codak, but regarding an ask about Tolkien to Gingerhaze you called Aragorn and the Dúnedain "Middle Eastern". Is this based on how Aragorn is described as "dark", or on something else? I've never really considered the skin colours of the people of Arda so I'm really curious.

In his letters and also in Lost Tales/Unfinished Tales/Etc., Tolkien connects the crown of Numenor historically with the crown of Egypt. This was inspired by Plato’s idea that Egypt, etc. were founded as colonies of Atlantis. (This is likely why the Numenorean language has semitic roots). Tolkien explicitly made Numenor his version of Atlantis, and it’s no coincidence that the kingdom of Gondor roughly corresponds geographically with a Mediterranean/North African colony. Given the thousands of years involved, Gondor had to have been multiracial by the time of Lord of the Rings, but Aragorn, being of a direct line of Numenoreans and all but explicitly stated to be the ancestor of Egyptian royalty, would be what we would call Middle Eastern.

What’s fun is if we go further back, even the Numenoreans are multiracial in origin, comprising at least three distinct races of human (the Edain), none of whom were intended to directly correlate with or represent Anglo-Saxons or other groups of people historically associated with Northern Europe. Their adventures took place on a continent that sank and has no geographic analogue in the real world (in fact, they all originated somewhere “far East” just a few centuries prior). And, like I said before, they are collectively meant to be the ancestors of what would become essentially Egyptians and, possibly, all Middle Easterners. It’s actually one of the very few times where we can connect an ethnic group in the real world to one of Tolkien’s fictional groups of people. In general, the different races of people are kind of random, and rarely stand-ins for or ancestors of historical groups of people. Their physical and cultural descriptions rarely correspond with any real-world geography and racial groups.

Tolkien had some racist issues to be sure (his depiction of what might be black people is, at best, dismissive), but it’s a lot more complicated that what’s often assumed. To associate him with Wagner-esque Aryan wankery is way off the mark, when he openly derided that philosophy more than once (including when he told off some Nazis). The fact of the matter is, the cultures and races in the books rarely line up with anything in the real world. And when they sort of do, it’s not what people often think. What he called “Easterlings,” for example, would have corresponded with Slavic people, if anything, not East Asian people (who would be on a different continent, if you tried to make the maps line up with the real world). In any case, it’s dangerous to make those assumptions, as we’re talking about tens of thousands of years of human migration in between “when” Tolkien’s history occurred and “when” real human history started. Also, the geography and even continents are pretty different. Looking at the maps and trying to point out what each race/culture is “supposed to be” isn’t going to bear much fruit.

Sorry that this is such a long reply, but I feel like it’s important to point out that putting a bunch of white people in the starring roles of these adaptations says more about the people adapting them than Tolkien. With some creativity we can make these stories much more inclusive than they normally seem to be (and I intend to use this to include more genders and people of color in my adaptation of the Silmarillion).

Was Tolkien racist about some things? Absolutely, but he also deliberately left a LOT to the imagination, because he knew better than to spell it out. At the end of the day, it’s mythology, and that’s open to interpretation.
