My Current Thoughts on Fairy Tail

Hey guys. This is a bit of an off the cuff post, but fuck it, I want to talk about this. There isn’t going to be any flash or snark, this just going to be me speaking from the heart.

So we got only two more chapters of Fairy Tail, and the raws of 544 are already out and it’s not good. Like by no means is it good. But I think people are waiting for me to review this chapter, and I will, but it’s not good, but this is not 0/10 worthy. Like is this one of the worst chapters of Fairy Tail? God no! But I do wanna take kinda this time to reflect on this series.

I make it no secret that this arc is awful and before someone does the inevitable “Well if you don’t like it don’t read it”, I hope you realize that I’ve taken the time to list everything positive that comes out of a chapter as well as the bad. I don’t imminently write it off as “This sucked”, but what’s good about the series has kinda been fading for a while now. Now is Fairy Tail the worst manga out there? Fuck no. If you honestly think FT is the worse manga then I dare you to read Freezing or Wolf Guy or Air Gear. I stayed with this series because despite every flaw it had, nothing was ever bad enough in the past to be like, “Wow this is awful”. This series produced a lot of likeable characters, pretty fun world, and some legitimately great moments and arcs. So telling me to abandon a series that gave me all that before this current mess, and before it really got bad, like don’t tell me that.

And don’t tell me that these flaws have been here since the beginning, because I’ve read this series since the beginning, it did not suffer some of these problems. Was there fanservice? Sure. Was there friendship speeches? Yes. But here’s the thing, every shounen series has done stuff like that. Like this is something that wasn’t pioneered by FT. But the difference was like tons of other shounen series, FT knew how to balance those aspects with compelling narrative and character development. Like early on, there was consequences like death and expulsion. There was a genuine edge. Not everything was an easy answer.  “because we’re fairy tail” wasn’t the end all answer. But then around like the Oracion seis arc it started to take a lot more of the easy answers.

Like it wasn’t fully consuming the story, but it started to become noticeable. It wasn’t till the GMG that it just consumed the story. It feel back on the lazy elements. And I know tons of people were declaring FT garbage at that time and some still kept reading and I can tell you why I wasn’t blasting the series when that happened, because before this arc there was nothing really horrible. Declaring a whole series trash because of one arc is so damn reckless, because with the story not over and all the stuff that came before the GMG, you know that Mashima would’ve learned and noticed what was happening and he did. 2/3s of tartaros felt like a goddamn apology letter. Like it was doing things similar to the beginning of the story, but then near the end it kinda started falling back on it’s repetative easy answers.

I think that Mashma, just did that because I think he just lose some of his spark. Like he wasn’t going to try and take as many chances. And that sucks. Mashima seems like a very nice guy, he always is working, and damn I give him credit on how much effort he’s put into his art. That what hurts when the story telling doesn’t match the effort being put into the storytellng.

Look Im not going to blame the whole decline in quality on the shippers. Trust me, love the big 4, hate the big 4,but shipping has been around for a while and I don’t claim I can’t see why a guy writing a story is trying to appease the most vocal fanbase. Now do I think shippers are except from criticism? No. But then again, it’s not them writing the damn story. Is the fact a lot of them stick around solely for the ships kinda head scratching? Yeah, but here’s the thing, I’m sure a lot of people have felt that way at one point or another. I fully admitted to getting into the series because of a ship. Ships are one of the most subjective things on the internet.

But, back to this rant, these last two arc are just so bad. There’s no real effort, there’s no real consequences, and it’s just so easy. For the longest time this series wasn’t awful, maybe just hovering around average, but nothing truly bad outside GMG. But Avatar and Alvarez have just been disappointments. Again there is like no effort and that hurts even more because this is the conclusion. So many things are to be wrapped up in the last arc that have had this great build up and it just crumbles. Like it’s so hard to watch characters I like just dick around or this big thing I’ve been waiting for just to be resolved in such a wet fart manner.

Like are these last two arcs enough to call FT a bad series? No. Even with all the shit that’s pulled, it’s not enough to screw over all the beginning arcs and tell someone not to read it, but these two arcs have confirmed that this is a terrible conclusion.

Ugh… Look despite all this crap, I can’t say FT is the worse, but this arc definitely is. Anyway you’ll see my review later but honestly I just wanted to say what’s been on my mind for a while now.

The Lost Light Does Your Makeup (S1 Cast)

(I’m leaving it up to the reader to decide whether these losers are using holomatter avatars or are in robot mode btw so I guess you can apply these to either a human or Cybertronian reader if you want lmao) (also why are there so many god damn robots on this ship this is so long holy hell)

  • He tries giving you smokey eyes. It doesn’t work out.
  • No seriously he’s so bad at doing makeup don’t let him near the eyeliner he’ll poke you in the eye with it and scream because he thinks you’ve gone blind.

  • He loves painting your lips, because he likes how it makes your smiles even prettier!
  • Probably forgets to use a setting spray/powder/whatever and gets a bit sad when it rubs off though (unleSS IT RUBBED OFF ON HIM CAUSE U WERE SMOOCHING).

  • He thinks it’s kinda dumb, but will do it anyway if you ask nicely. If you ask him pre-Delphi his hands might seize up and he’ll like. Smear lipstick across your entire face.
  • Post-Delphi when he’s got New Hands smearing stuff across your face won’t be a problem. He’s great at doing your eyeliner, and other more finnicky things but he’s gonna need you to explain what each product is and which brush you gotta use it with.

Ultra Magnus

  • It takes a lot of convincing to get him to do it, but he’s actually not bad if you’re okay with staying still for a long time (he’ll make mistakes and then remove everything and start over until you look flawless)
  • He will up your eyebrow game by an insane amount and your eyeliner will have perfectly even wings. Get Mags to do your makeup.

  • He’s constantly cracking jokes while he’s applying the goods, so you end up laughing really hard when he tries to do anything.
  • You look like a disaster when he’s done, but you both had fun and he did his best so it’s okay. You do his makeup too and take some selfies together.

  • He gets very excited because you’re so cute!! And he gets to help you look even cuter!! He’s determined to make you look amazing.
  • He’s got no idea what any of these things are. Please guide this big baby through the whole process so he doesn’t get lipstick on your eyes or something.

  • He saw you do your makeup once and was all “hey can I try” so you were like “sure thing lol” because you couldn’t get your eyeliner right.
  • He managed to do everything perfectly on his first try and even did a bit of contouring. You hate how perfect you look. This isn’t fair Skids. You don’t even wear makeup, Skids.

  • He’s either terrible or really great at makeup, there’s no in between with him.
  • He’s gonna screw conventional makeup looks and go for something very elaborate and avantgarde just because he can. You either look glorious and majestic or monstrous and terrifying when he’s done with you. Get Brainstorm to do your makeup.

  • He’s not gonna do it, so don’t even bother asking.
  • I mean I guess if you try hard enough he might give in and teach you some old as balls Cybertronian makeup techniques that have been otherwise forgotten (spoiler alert: they’re all war paint patterns), but that’s all you’re getting and he’ll only do it once, so you better remember those looks. You look badass tho.

  • He’s honored you’ll let him do your makeup tbh, because hardly anyone on Cybertron wears makeup except for like, war paint or for religious reasons.
  • Probably opts for a subtle and/or simple look though, because he doesn’t want to make you look bad on accident. It takes him a bit of practice, but once he gets the hang of it you look absolutely radiant.

  • Don’t let Whirl do your makeup. He will break all your brushes and products with his Big Metal Claws. If he uses his holo avatar it should be ok though.
  • Holo!Whirl decides you’re gonna have a look that says you killed a man. When you’re done, you look like extremely hot, and also like you’ve murdered not just one man, but a hundred.

  • Honestly? He probably doesn’t want to do your makeup but Rewind took your side but that’s probably because he wants to film Domey trying (and failing) to do your eyeliner.
  • He’s not very good at it, but he’s also not terrible at doing your makeup. He avoids doing your eyeliner though and just sticks to using mascara and some lipgloss. Rewind is disappointed.

  • This smol boy doesn’t take it seriously. At all.
  • He films himself doing your makeup. He does it badly on purpose and then makes you watch the video before you look in a mirror. It’s entertaining but the end result is awful. Don’t let Rewind do your makeup.

not trying to hate or anything please don’t take what I’m about to say the wrong way.

I just feel like Kataang is really generic. Like, it was to most predictable, anticipated canon couple. People from the beginning knew they would end up together, and their development was very generic too.

I don’t say this as a bad thing, as one of the ships is ship dearly is generic as well, but I just never got into their relationship like so many people have.

The reason I ship Zutara is because of their story. Katara hated zuko, and I don’t blame her. He was an ass in the first season, and then betrayed her in the second season after they really got to bond. But when he came back to help, despite her hostility towards him, he tried to help her get over her anger towards the fire nation. She forgave him because he did what he could to help her get through that part of her life.

Their relationship was less predictable(obviously we knew they would forgive each other, but from there we had no idea what would happen)they had their ups and downs but in the end they DID care about each other, and it showed in the finale. Zuko sacrificing himself so she wouldn’t get hurt. I have no doubt that he would do that if it had been anyone else, but it wasn’t anyone else. It was Katara and it was like that for a reason.

Even in all their anger towards each other, they always ended up saving each other’s lives because whether they wanted to admit it or not, they cared deeply for each other. (Zuko pushing her out of the way from being crushed by rocks and Katara grabbing his hand to keep him from falling to his death)

I ship Maiko too, btw(I’m in a pickle)

But I just see Kataang as a very generic romance. The unrequited/friendship turned love theme is a very popular thing(stydia, for example)and enemies turned loyal friends/lovers is also generic, but I just feel like the zutara type of relationship always has a more interesting story, more raw chemistry, and a deeper kind of relationship/friendship(ex. Bellarke{I may not ship it but there is no denying their friendship}, percabeth)

Keep in mind I may be a zutara shipper, but I don’t mind Kataang. I do think they’re cute, and both of them deserve each other after everything they’ve been through, but I just feel like it’s a bit bland. They have a great friendship, but I just don’t ship it romantically.

anonymous asked:

I'm not a huge shipper either way (I just want the characters to be happy lol) but I've noticed that a lot of the Zutara people on tumblr actually have a lot more valid points and are mature and respectful when discussing their ship. It's not always the case, of course, but you guys seem to really deeply consider the wellbeing and canon characterization of the characters, which is kind of funny since it's not a canon ship. I don't get why Zutara is getting so much anon hate either like jfc

That’s what I noticed, too. There are so many good analyses, not only of the shipping, but of the emotional dynamics of the canon and non-canon pairings. For general Avatar symbolism, there are plenty of solid essays out there from canon shippers, but when it comes to defending Kαtααng and Mαiko themselves, there is a dearth of good explanations for the way they came about. Mostly, in my opinion, because the unfortunate canon shippers don’t have a heck of a lot to work with. There are tons and tons of cute moments between Katara and Aαng, and there are … some … moments … of something between Mαi and Zuko, but when you’re considering a pairing as a miniature story in and of itself, Mαiko and Kαtααng just don’t build to a finish all that well.

Zuko and Katara’s story, especially from the Day of Black Sun on, is treated as a separate plot in and of itself that builds to a climax when Zuko jumps in front of the lightning for Katara. The closest parallel would be to Zuko and Aαng’s three-season adventure toward friendship and family, which is why it’s so funny to me to see Kαtααng shippers argue that Zutara isn’t a good ship because of things that Zuko did pre-redemption. I guess Zuko and Aαng—you know, the relationship that was basically the crux of the show—shouldn’t be friends, then, either, right?

*shakes head*

But seriously, let’s take the last dialogue these couples have together before their kissing scenes in the finale.

I used to be kind of a Maiko shipper, but more in that I didn't pay much attention to ships on my first run through of atla and just went with what was canon because I watched it all in a few days and cared more about everything else. Rewatching it and reading the comics definitely changed my mind. The way she treats him in smoke and shadow is deplorable and their time in the show together mostly just shows how incomparable they are. They both need someone different or they'll end up miserable

Honesty, I think the toxicity of Maiko slipped under the rug for the majority of us during the initial airing (or your initial viewing) of the show. There are so many other elements to the story line and the various ships hardly held any weight against each character’s arc. Like you, it wasn’t until my second viewing of Avatar, in my late teens, that I realized why the two major canon ships seemed so… out of place in a show that celebrates diversity, growth, redemption, and love.

Kataang was really an infatuation during the show. Yes, Aang made unwarranted advances on Katara, but I appreciated that both characters were separate and developed separately (Katara more so than Aang, but I want to keep this short). Aang may have not gained the emotional wisdom that he needed for a relationship, but in general, he was a talented Avatar and achieved the proper level of development to bring the war to an end, make peace with the Fire Prince, and ultimately, forgive the Fire Nation. Likewise, Katara grew in her talent and her tenacity. She fought ferociously for what she wanted, mastered water, held the Gaang together, and eventually forgave and found peace with a man who was once the face of the enemy.

Now, with the exclusion of the Southern Raiders and the few non-consensual kisses, Aang and Katara communicate well enough. Given a bit more development on Aang’s part, and on the part of the ship, I’d have no issue supporting it. The show’s version, that is.

When we reach the comics, Katara’s development is completely forgotten in favor of a god-modded Avatar. She is no longer herself. She is no longer permitted to be herself because that would clash with Aang’s vision for her. Legend of Korra, and it’s statement that Katara is just a healer now, only confirms this new version of Katara.  In all truth, the presentation of Kataang in the comics and Katara in Legend of Korra makes up 85% of my distaste for Kataang, with the other 15% being the lack of development in the show and Aang’s persistent, unwanted advances.

The problem with Maiko, which leads me to despise it in a way I’ll never despise show!kataang, is that there is an underlying current of emotional abuse from start to finish. This underlying current becomes a riptide in the comics.

What starts out as ‘jests’ (and I use that term very, very loosely), turns into full blown manipulation, lies, and emotional trauma that is second only to what Ozai did to Zuko. Although, Mai doesn’t seem to grasp what Ozai did to Zuko, because she throws his abuse and his father in his face and even strong arms him into apologizing for her mistakes.

Not only does she put him down to his face, Mai disrespects him behind his back. Not only does she take no responsibility for her actions, Mai forces the responsibility onto Zuko. Not only does she manipulate him outright, Mai manipulates those around him to hurt him further. Not only is Mai aware of her father’s schemes, she lies directly to Zuko, even when his life is on the line.

In no way, do any of Mai’s actions, demonstrate respect, care, or love for Zuko. She is concerned only for herself and what she can be bored about next.

1. There are too many for me but my second favorite Korrasami moment (besides the handhold of course) would have to be when Asami was teaching Korra how to drive. When I saw that scene, I was laughing like a mad woman. It was really cute, too.

2. I honestly don’t remember. I think it happened gradually and I finally became fully invested by episode 13. Believe it or not, I’ve only shipped in five fandoms: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, G Gundam, Harry Potter, The Percy Jackson series and finally The Legend of Korra. I didn’t ship anyone on Avatar: The Last Airbender. So for me to be really invested in it, the pairing must have chemistry and catch my interest.

3. Hm, that’s a good question. Well, I don’t know if it’s weird but when I’m feeling angsty and to prepare myself if Makorra happen, I headcanon the fact that Korra and Asami’s youngest children marry each other, thus uniting both families. If Korrasami doesn’t happen then at least give us this.

I don’t completely comprehend when I see people bashing Makorra shippers just because they post stuff about Makorra and want Makorra to happen. Tumblr should be a safe place and no one should ever feel discouraged from expressing what they ship because they’re afraid that they’re going to be called homophobic.

I feel like it’s been said like seventy thousand million times and people don’t really give a flying fuck, but just because someone wanted Makorra to be endgame gives you no right to call them homophobic. So when I see posts of ours that I’ve made about Makorra post-finale and see idiotic comments like that bashing my ship or my opinions without any concern to how the two of us (and many Makorra shippers) really are, it seriously pisses me off. Instead of leaving it alone and leaving the tag alone, people feel the need to spread hate like wildfire.

So if you reblog our posts and you don’t know that we have always treated every Avatar ship with respect, AND you choose to give us a royal ‘fuck you’ with your comments and tags, I will be happy knowing that the real bigot is you.

I just really enjoy being in the Legend of Korra/Avatar fandom right now cause shit is so peaceful since we’re all so thrilled with Book 3 so far and everyone just sits around in awe over how much better it got and I can really get behind that. It’s like this weird sort of zen in between moments of wild, panicked emotions over whatever new shit comes up with either the show or nickelodeon’s cluster-fuckery. I mean, I’m just not used to us all being so chill and agreeable about everything with each other and the show itself.

I mean- there aren’t even major shipping wars going on. Everyone sort of does what they want and there’s like this general agreement that if somehow Korra and Asami got together we may not ship it but we’d be chill about it.

It’s probably just that we went through so many emotions as a fandom that we opened all the chakras and have achieved a weird inner peace.

no matter what i watch, i always tend to focus on the characters/relationships between them rather than the plot itself. how much i like the show/movie largely hinges on how much i liked character development and interactions and less so the plot.

someone: ugh that ending was so stupid

anonymous asked:

Omg i ship klance a lot too, i hope they explain their arcs more in the next season 😍honestly their scenes together are the best but as much as i'd like it i dont think the writers will make them canon or even close, wht do you think?

Hmm, good question. Well, there are two things to factor in here: one, it’s a Netflix series headed by a team comprised of many Avatar alumni, so in theory, that opens up a lot of leeway for a queer relationship; and two, despite the above fact, it’s still listed as a children’s show, which means homophobic parents may still be on the lookout for something they can protest against.

As we’ve seen in the past year or so, though, queer relationships are slowly being edged into television in a way that theoretically minimizes backlash. We saw this with the finale of Avatar: Legend of Korra, where Asami and Korra were confirmed to be a couple, even though on screen this development was somewhat cryptically expressed. An even more prominent example would be Steven Universe, with its showcasing of relationships between characters like Ruby and Sapphire, or Rose and Pearl. Cartoon Network, in general, has been a lot more progressive with this sort of thing, and then there’s also the fact that canonically these characters are non-binary gems, so most arguments homophobes make would, in simpler terms, be baseless.

Now, as I’m sure we’re all hoping, were Keith and Lance’s relationship to be pursued, we would want for it to happen as candidly as possible. Whether or not the creators of the show (and Netflix) are willing to take the leap with this is something I unfortunately don’t have the answer to. We can only hope that the recent trends, as well as this team’s general reputation of supporting queer representation, will ultimately overpower the absurd complaints and threats of homophobes. And if you think about it, Netflix’s business is so booming in general that I doubt it would bat an eye at such protests. I mean, where else are people who don’t know any better going to get their movies, and in HD quality at that?

My overall statement: yes, I think they’ll go ahead with it, or I’m at least hoping very strongly that they will.

rubyruaboo  asked:

Hello cx I love your art and writing! I was just wondering, is there proof that Rose and Pearl kissed during "We need to talk"? Or do you think they didn't kiss at all? Thanks! Have a nice day cx

Thank you! That means a lot.

Personally, I don’t think they canonically kissed, because the angle of Pearl’s head seems to indicate more that she was curling into Rose’s neck - which is almost better? Like, whoa, let me just press my lips into the crook of your neck, no big, no homo, haha. This being said, I’m very sure they had at least a pseudo-romantic history, and were very physically flirtatious with one another. You can’t spend 5000+ years with someone you love that devotedly and on that many levels and not have some sort of intimacy, after all. I’ve heard tell that the Crewniverse has intentions to delve more into Rose and Pearl’s past with one another, so I’m sure we’ll get all the details soon enough! (Also, I am always here for shipping these gay rocks – though all pairings have problems, if it’s consensual, I’m in.)
