i know there was no lily in the book

coreylubo: I didn’t know that picking up a book off a random table at Barnes and Noble would lead me down this path. I didn’t know the wonderful people I’d meet along the way. And I didn’t know, after all this time… Harry’s would still going strong. Happy anniversary #HarryPotter. (I’ll post some more BTS throwbacks on my story tomorrow!) #harrypotter20

something else that nobody talks about: snapes first glance at harry and how it differs from the book

in the book, it says

“it happened very suddenly. the hook-nosed teacher looked past quirrell’s turban straight into harry’s eyes - and a sharp, hot pain shot across the scar on harry’s forehead…..harder to shake off was the feeling harry had gotten from the teacher’s look - a feeling that he didn’t like harry at all.”

but in the movie, we get this exchange instead:

snape doesn’t look like he hates harry at all. in fact, it’s as if he’s realised something

a lot of alans performance, all the subtle movements and facial expressions, boiled down to what jk had told him before filming: that he was in love with lily. and i know we were supposed to be thrown off from his intentions in the books, but isn’t this somehow better? that we don’t get an exactly clear indication of snapes feelings for harry right off the bat, but rather a curious, almost unreadable, glance?

ugh bless you alan rickman </3

Minerva Mcgongall pulled out her notebook and turned to the page that listed the names and details of that years Gryffindor Quidditch team. Her heart swelling with pride she jotted down the name “Harry Potter” next to the position “Seeker” before closing the book and opening a second drawer. She took out a small, wooden box and rummaged in it for a few seconds before withdrawing a worn out envelope, inside of which was a short letter and a photograph.

“Dearest Minnie,

Hope you’re doing well! I’m the same of course, driving Lily up the wall as usual, she sends you her love by the way!

Now I know I told you that you’ll never find a chaser as good as me ever again, but it just goes to show that even the brilliant are sometimes mistaken. I’ve found you (made you!) a replacement who will one day outshine his old man by leagues! Enclosed is a photograph of your new Quidditch prodigy so that you may assess his skills for yourself. We have him chasing the cat for practice. He’ll be unbeatable by the time he starts at Hogwarts! The youngest Quidditch player in a century!

I guarantee it, Minnie. And you know I’m never wrong, though you’ll never admit it!

Missing you and Hogwarts terribly,

Lots of love,

James

P.S. Sirius says his marriage proposal still stands.”

Wiping away a single tear that ran down her cheek and chuckling to herself, she smiled down at the photograph of a small, gleeful, black haired boy zooming along in a toy broom, a pair of legs chasing after him and a young woman laughing hysterically in a corner.

“Right again, Mr. Potter.”

“We’ll be at Hogwarts in ten minutes,” said Professor Lupin. “Are you all right, Harry?“
Harry didn’t ask how Professor Lupin knew his name.

Okay Harry dear let me tell you how he knew your name:

  • He bought you your first knit sweater, it was red because he knew red brought out your mother’s eyes.
  • He was there when you got sick for the first time. He comforted your parents because he was the first person they called. “Moony come here right this second, Lily’s freaking out”
  • During your first winter you liked being in his arms the best because he was warmer than the other Marauders
  • He took care of you so many times when mama and dada were having a date night
  • You were the only thing that made him as happy as chocolate after a particularly rough full moon
  • You liked to ran your little hands over his big scars, you were the second person he didn’t mind doing that. Sirius was the first
  • You made him smile even though there was a war going on and there wasn’t much to be happy about
  • All he wanted was you after he lost it all, he was denied that right.
  • He thought about you and all his friends on full moons, how all of them sat on the living room floor of the Potters and played with you, no one had died or betrayed each other
  • He knew your name Harry, because the moment he opened his eyes in that compartment, he thought James was sitting across him and they were back in their 3rd year.
  • He knew who you were because when he looked into your eyes to say “sit still” he saw Lily Evans’ eyes.
  • He knew your name, Harry, because you were all he had left as a reminder that everything they went through with Marauders were real.
  • And the worst part is you knew him, too. You loved him at one point and now you didn’t even recognise him.

I hate it when people ask me to describe what the book I’m reading is about because I know you mean you want me to give you a short, basic description but I can’t do that, no, either you get the whole life story of the book or you read the goddamn back

Marauders + Pranks
  • First year, first day back, James, decides to prank Snivellus. He does not tell anyone, but sneaks a dungbomb into his pocket for further perusal at lunch.
  • Sirius, of course, has had the exact same idea, but his prank involves a potion to make the drinker throw up.
  • Peter, meanwhile, has no intention of getting involved in anything, but he knows that James and Sirius are up to something. He catches them both, at separate times, trying to sneak in to dinner.
  • They (at separate times) implore him to say nothing, and he is therefore reeled into this mess of a plan (About which he is quite enthusiastic now).
  • Remus notes, dryly, that James and Sirius are up to something, but says nothing.
  • Under the Slytherin table at dinner, somehow James and Sirius end up, quite literally, bumping into each other.
  • James quickly detonates the dungbomb, and Sirius slips the potion into Snape’s drink. However, they are not very slick getting out from under the Slytherin table and Lucius (”That darn prefect!” Peter mumbles worriedly, as McGonagall glares at them later in her office)
  • She is about to give them detention when Remus shows up. “But professor, they were with me, studying,” he says innocently.
  • Later, the next week they execute two successful pranks.
  • James always plans the Invasion Strategy, Sirius always adds quirks to it, Remus always plans the Escape Strategy and Peter is always the lookout.
  • Afterwards, James points out weaknesses, Peter the strengths, Sirius the threats, and Remus the advantages.
  • Once, after Christmas, when they unsuccessfully try to to dump hard-boiled eggs on the Slytherin Common room, James, Sirius and Peter are given detention.
  • Remus finishes the prank and lands detention with them. (”One for all, all for one,” he says from a muggle book.)
  • That’s when they know that they are the best of friends.
  • Second Year, during the Welcome Feast, Dumbledore’s beard starts to grow and grow and grow. Over his head, it says “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your beard.”
  • In third year, after the prank involving numerous squirrels, McGonagall bursts out “I will not have you Maraudering around in my house!”
  • Third year, on Halloween, somehow the armor is turned into a giant spider and it rattles the school.Four boys sit at the Gryffindor table, with barely constrained laughter, calmly eating pudding.
  • Fourth year, they get pranked by Lily Evans and James is a goner.
  • Fifth year, Sirius admires the way Moony looks when planning a prank. Absolutely devious, he thinks. When Remus catches him staring st his long finger, Sirius look away quickly.
  • That year, Sirius gets distracted a total of seventy-two times in sixty-three pranks because he has been looking at Moony.
  • Yet, while James hates the swoop of the stomach when lily looks particular beautiful, hates the lost control over his reaction; Sirius embraces it, loses himself in it
  • Yet, sixth year, he takes pranks too far
  • Sixth year, in the annual prank war (a tradition started from first year) the Marauders lose for the first time to Lily and Sirius (who has jumped teams after the falling out with Remus)
  • Lily realizes James Potter is quite ingenious
  • Fed up with the silent treatment, Sirius challenges Remus to a duel
  • They cannot get caught: Gryffindor is running in the negatives
  • They decide to do it at night, but in order to not get caught, they have the same solution: no students out of bed.
  • In their pyjamas and bedclothes, they levitate their beds out at 2 a.m into the Great Hall
  • In the darkness, they do not realize that James and Peter have already levitated their beds because they are up to a prank
  • When they all collide in the Great Hall, they realize that their friendship is not as fragile and they try to prank Dumbledore’s office.
  • Once they’re caught, a livid McGonagall has to let them go: “Professor, we’re not out of bed!”
  • Seventh year, James is extra careful about getting caught. He stops his pranks
  • Lily Evans scolds him. “We need them now more than ever,” she says. She realizes she has fallen for his impeccable humor.
  • After Hogwarts, when they move into a giant apartment, the Marauders and Lily play daily pranks on each other
  • After Harry is born, the pranks lessen, and once they go into hiding, there are no more pranks
  • Peter Pettirgrew thinks that he is going to be the master of the joke. The one they never suspected. But he wonders why he does not feel like laughing.
  • As James falls, he begins to think of all the weaknesses, all the flaws and why it had gone wrong.
  • Sirius berates himself for not thinking of the threats, alone in an Azkaban cell.
  • Remus, standing alone at the funeral, wonders about the advantages. Sirius knows he isn’t the spy. James and Lily died together. Voldemort vanquished. A child who would never know his Uncle Moony, but who would help them. He thinks it is enough for the coming years.

you know in the books when Remus and Sirius tell Harry that James couldn’t help but make a fool of himself when Lily was around I don’t think they meant asking her out every time he saw her or being like some massive jerk. I think they meant he was a huge dork who dropped his books and who was tongue tied around her and it was nerdy and silly and innocent. I refuse to believe he was some arrogant huge bully until seventh year because he wanted to date her, we only see ONE scene of interaction between them and he was angry and she was mad and they were 15 bye. down with this horrible notion of a douche James, give me more of dorky nerdy wild hair four eyed James

the map

Snape demands Harry to turn out his pockets and takes the Marauders Map to examine it

James: Oh Snivellus, I’d love to see you try

Lily: What does it do?

James: You’ll see in about a second.

Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people’s business.

Lily: Oh for Merlin’s sake, the map insults people, too?

James: *grinning* It insults people but drags Snivellus.

Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.

Lily: JAMES!

James: *innocently* What? It’s the map.

Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor.

James: *stifles his laughter*

Lily: Will you ever grow up?

James: Nope.

Mr. Wormtail bids, Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.

James: Ugh, I forgot that prat was there, too.

Lily: I can’t believe you did advanced magic just to insult people.

James: You have to admit it’s a masterpiece though.

Lily: All the brains you had and you created a map that says slimeball.

James: *sad* You don’t know what the map is capable of Lils.

Lily: You are so lucky he is asking about it to Remus.

James: Another proof that Snivellus is a complete idiot but yeah, Remus would know what to do with the map and maybe see that the bloody rat is on it.

Lily: Look at him bullshit his way out of this. Incredible.

James: *smiling* All of you thought he was the innocent one, I mean, that man can bullshit his way out of anything.

Remus takes the map from Snape and takes Harry and Ron with him to talk, he is very angry with Harry.

Lily: Harry is in big trouble.

James: *frustrated* For Godric’s sake, Sirius is not after Harry. I want to throw a rock at Moony’s head. *imitating Remus* These mapmakers would have wanted to lure you out of school. Fuck you Moony.

“Do you know them?” said Harry, impressed.

“We’ve met,” he said shortly.

James: WE’VE MET??? WE’VE MET??? YOU– I MEAN– I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE–

Lily: *soothingly* James, deep breaths

James: I became a fucking stag for that man, don’t tell me to take deep breaths.

Lily: *sarcastically* You’ve got a point, keep on yelling.

“I can’t make you take Sirius Black seriously.”

James: *apruptly stops* Tell me he didn’t just say “take Sirius Black seriously”?

Lily: *laughing* Yes he did.

James: *disappointed* The Remus I know wouldn’t have told that without an eye roll.

Lily: *slowly rubbing James’ back* A lot changes in twelve years, love.

James: *ruffling his hair* They shouldn’t have.

Lily: *reassuringly* It will be alright soon. Look, Remus has the map now, he will see that Peter is in the castle, Remus will know it wasn’t Sirius.

James: Sure but still, I can’t shake the feeling that it will never be the same.

Lily: If I know Remus and Sirius even just a little, it will be better.

James: The stars to his moon, yeah?

Lily: *smiling* Exactly.

Sleepover-Sirius Black Imagine

Request: helloo i was wondering if you could do a sirius x reader where everyone knows they love each other but they don’t admit it & for some reason one day all the marauders are sleeping in the girls dorm (like a sleepover lol) but its v cold and they don’t have enough blankets, sirius and reader have to share and they wake up cuddled up to each other and just fluff??

Warnings: none

Requests are always open, hope you enjoy! xo

Sirius and Y/N had been in love since they first laid eyes on each other. The two were attached at the hip and seldom seen apart; in rare cases when they weren’t together, they were utterly miserable. Everyone knew they were in love-well, except them.

“Face it Padfoot, you’re in love with Y/N,” James said, smirking as he watched his best friend shoot daggers at the boy talking to her across the common room.

“Shut it, no I’m not. She’s my best friend, I have to look out for her,” Sirius replied, clenching his jaw as the boy stepped closer to her.

“We’re her friends too, but you don’t see us getting angry just because some bloke is talking to her, Sirius,” Remus chided.

“I’m not angry,” he snapped.

“No, just jealous,” James chuckled, earning a pillow to the face.

Godric’s Hollow
  • When James parents died they left him their whole estate, but Godric’s Hollow was special, it was him and Lily’s wedding gift and the charming, secluded hamlet suited them just fine, so that is where the newly-weds decided to live.
  • It soon transpired that James had no clue how to furnish a house, and so Lily and Sirius teamed up to make this place a home.
  • Lily started with the sitting room, buying two enormous comfy sofas that could swallow you whole as you curled up and read a book from the equally enormous antique bookcase she bought and filled, with Remus’ help.
  • Sirius bought an entire stores worth of kitchenware, because if there is one thing he had learnt from his days cooking with the house elves, it was that you never knew what you were going to need.
  • ‘What even is a turkey thermometer and why do I own one?’ ‘Shut up Prongs you didn’t know what a baking tray was until two days ago.’
  • Lily also purchased an assortment of flowers which she placed on every bare surface of the house, adding splashes of colour all over the place.
  • Peter, who was quite allergic to pollen, couldn’t stop sneezing wherever he went.
  • ‘I fell attacked in my own home!’ ‘Pete, you don’t live here.’
  • Sirius and Remus are very big on the whole matching sets thing, and so came the his and her loofahs, his and her sink, his and her arm chair by the fireplace. Sirius even bought a ‘Mr & Mrs calendar collection’. Remus reassured a panicking James that Sirius had done the same thing with their apartment.
  • James and Lily spending an entire weekend painting bedroom walls a specific shade of cream that James had picked (Lily couldn’t tell the difference between three identical shades of cream, but James had been persistent that each one had a different ‘aura’)
  • James accidentally swinging his arm around and wiping a huge line of paint across Lily’s face in the process.
  • ‘Potter!’ ‘Oh god, I’m so sorry babe I didn’t mean-’
  • Lily’s paint brush crashing not-so-accidentally into James face.
  • The next 15 minutes being a paint war between the two as the cover each other in more paint than is one the walls, laughing hysterically and it ending in a paint soaked kiss on the floor.
  • Three weeks of hard work later and the house is finished. It is finally a place the Potters and sometimes Sirius can call home. They can relax and focus on fighting a war.
  • And then Lily gets pregnant.
  • And the quiet life in Godrics Hollow has to prepare to become a lot noisier.
  • But no one is complaining (well Sirius is a little bit because he is usually the centre of attention, but Moony shuts him up.)
  • James is freaking out because raise a baby? In this house? In this war?
  • Lily is like husband, calm yourself, here have one of these 8 different parenting books Remus and I have been reading.
  • Sirius makes it his personal task in life to design the perfect nursery for this kid, and so seals himself semi-permanently in the second bedroom to work on it. No one is allowed in until it is finished.
  • Peter goes out and buys a pram and a high-chair, James and Lily really appreciated the gesture, they hadn’t been seeing enough of Peter recently.
  • Remus buys a collection of children’s books that he wants to read to the newborn, he has been saying all this time he would be terrible with a child, but everyone can tell he is secretly over the moon with excitement.
  • Lily is the first one to begin child-proofing, when she moves the knife block into high cupboard one day, and James is confused so he asks what child-proofing actually is.
  • James Potter becoming obsessed with child proofing.
  • I mean he finds every single corner in the house, I mean every. single. one., and places a foam buffer on it. He hides every mildly sharp object from scissors to hairbrushes.
  • ‘Really James?’ ‘Lily, you don’t understand, what if it poked it’s eye out with it by accident?!’ ‘…’
  • He buys a safety gate for the stairs, he buys locks for the toilets seats, he replaces the flower vases with plastic ones, he buys cushions for the dining chairs, he throws out the food processor and tries to throw away the toaster, but Remus eventually takes matters into his own hands and stops the rampage.
  • Then, one month before the baby is born, Sirius unveils his nursery.
  • He’s hand painted all the furniture, from the crib to the tiny bookcase, each in there own individual pastel colour.
  • He has put a mobile over the crib, its of the solar system, and its charmed to also show the phases of the moon. He also added in Sirius the star as an extra orbit.
  • There is a fully stocked changing table in one corner and a full chest of drawers in the other.
  • But the real showstopper what he painted on one of the walls.
  • Its a kind of mural. Of a Forrest full of trees and plants with a small clearing at the centre. Walking into the clearing is a large black dog accompanied by a equally large grey wolf with a small rat hurrying along between their feet. Lying down nuzzled together in the middle of the clearing however, is a stag and doe, dozing peacefully, curled around a small fawn that lies in between them.
  •  The Marauders, Completed. I written above the image.
  • James has tears in his eyes as he hugs his brother, he is so grateful.
  • Then Harry is born and the house comes alive with life and joy and the Potters pour their love into their son.
  • Remus and Sirius would come over almost every day to play with Harry, Peter would join them as well sometimes and the laughter would carry on through the night as the small house vibrated with happiness.
  • Then the prophecy happened.
  • Remus and Sirius couldn’t come over any more, neither could Peter.
  • The house seemed to dull slowly as the absence of the men took it’s toll.
  • The flowers wilted as Lily couldn’t go out to buy her favourite fertiliser anymore, and James broke the stair gate one day by accident, but couldn’t go out to buy a replacement.
  • A certain darkness seemed to want to creep into the house as James and  Lily’s greatest project and comfort, had become their prison.
  • But, as always, the couple took this in their stride, determined for this to make them stronger rather than weaker, if not for themselves then for Harry, who mattered more to them than anyone else.
  • Lily dried and pressed the wilted flowers to make decorations for the walls, and James used the kitchen tools Sirius had bought to craft a new gate for the stairs.
  • They focused their energy on Harry, who although couldn’t go out to the park, go still be zoomed around the house by James with a small levitating spell, or slide down the stairs with a mattress on Lily’s lap, or fall asleep to one of Remus’ stories in a pillow fort his parents had built him.
  • And whenever James was missing Sirius more then usual, or Lily was wishing Remus was here to make hot chocolate for them all, they could look at that mural on the wall and know that, one day, everything would be okay.
  • Because although their world was crashing down, Lily and James Potter loved each other enough to build themselves a new one.
  • Until one dark night on Halloween, after a day of carving pumpkins no one else would see and eating candy they couldn’t give to other children, Harry Potter lost everything. Because the home his parents had so loving built, was blown apart by someone who could not love. He lost the big sofas you could sink into, and the industrial amount of kitchen utensils. He lost a baby gate and foam corners. He lost a master bedroom that still had hand prints on the walls from where his parents has played. He lost bundles of calendars made for years to come. He lost a collection of books selected just for him to enjoy. He lost two people who sacrificed everything they could, just to keep him safe. And when that curse rebounded, everything in its path was destroyed.
  • And in its path was a mural, of a little Forrest somewhere, with a black dog, a wolf, a rat and and family of deer, all looking with love at the little fawn below.
James Potter is going grey

In honour of the grey hair I found on my head today.

Also here: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12391871/1/Going-Grey

When James finally starts going grey, you would have thought the entire bloody world had caught on fire.

It’s Sirius who spots it first, the one shining silver strand in the mass of black hair on James’ head. They’re trooping in, brooms over their shoulders, mud on their quidditch boots, and James has Harry wrapped up under his arm, rubbing his head while Harry laughs at James’ insistence that “You can’t slag off your old man. I would have kicked your arse back in the day.”

“Yeah,” Harry yells, elbowing his father in the side, “back in the day.” Sirius barks a laugh, claps Harry on the back, “Nice one, kid.” James shoots him a glare and he shoves James’ shoulder, “Tough break, mate. Though your kid kicking your arse goes nicely with that grey hair you’ve got there. Very fitting.”

When Lily finds them a few minutes later, Harry is doubled over, barely breathing with laughter, and James and Sirius are nothing more than a tangle of limbs on the now excruciatingly muddy kitchen floor. She pulls out her wand, twirls it deftly between her fingers, calmly threatens to hex them within an inch of their lives if they don’t get up right now and clean the floor.

I find the Marauders Era fascinating. We know very little about it, but we do know James and Lily defied Voldemort THREE TIMES; the Marauders became illegal animagi just for Remus. Jily’s love story was probably one for the ages. Each one of them (plus Snape and Regulus) would’ve had amazing character arcs. I wanted a series or at least a book about this era because I believe they would’ve been just as amazing as the HP series, but after Cursed Child…I’m not sure I want it anymore.

Do the books ever mention where Sirius’s grave is? Like I know there was no body but he would absolutely not want to be buried in his family plot so where the f u c k AND what the fuck just because they didn’t have a body doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a funeral no wonder Harry was fucked up there was no proper grieving place the first funeral he went to was probably for Dumbledore unless Petunia actually went to Lily and James’s which I could see MAYBE happening but I could also see her not going where is Sirius Black’s grave I am so sad

redhead

*Sectumsempra*

Lily: No! Harry!

James: *panicking* I know that spell from somewhere, Blondie needs help immediately. Merlin’s pants Myrtle he’s not dead STOP shouting!

Lily: He’s about to be, it can’t be.. no. That bloody book, that is a very dark spell Jamie

Sirius: Trust me knows, he was hit by it.

Lily: WHAT?!

James: *through his teeth* Padfoot!

Sirius: We are all dead Prongs, it doesn’t matter if she knows or not really.

James: You son of a–

Sirius: Bitch. I know, I lived with her for sixteen years.

Lily: Who?

James: Doesn’t matter.

Lily: *fuming* I. said. WHO

James: *giving up* Snivellus. Dumbledore healed me pretty fast, I didn’t have many scars so I decided to keep it to myself than to hurt you.

Sirius: Speak of the devil

*Snape heals Draco and comes back to order Harry to bring his school bag*

Lily: He’s gonna have to give that stupid book to him eventually

Sirius: *smirking* Not necessarily

Lily: Sirius, I will drag you to hell myself and hand you over to Walburga if you don’t shut it.

James: He’s going to the Room of Requirements to hide his book, I can’t believe we didn’t include that in the Map.

Lily: Jamie, this is so not the time love.

James: Alright alright, got it.

*Snape checks Harry’s copy of Advanced Potion Making”

Sirius: Seriously Harry? Roonil Wazlib and the best you can come up with is “That’s my nickname”?

Lily: He’s in so much trouble, he’s done for–

James: Lily calm down a little.

Lily: He almost killed that boy!

Sirius: Well he’s up to something for Voldemort, didn’t you see his arm?

Lily: Doesn’t mean he has to die! Don’t you ever think of Regulus and how he was forced into all of this?

James: LILY!

Sirius: Don’t you dare talk about him again Evans.

Lily: I– I’m sorry.

*“Well, we shall see how you feel after your detentions,” said Snape. “Ten o’clock Saturday morning, Potter. My office.” “But sir…” said Harry, looking up desperately. “Quidditch… the last match of the…” “Ten o’clock,” whispered Snape, with a smile that showed his yellow teeth. “Poor Gryffindor, fourth place this year, I fear”*

James: That fucking wanker, he did that on purpose. He’s gonna miss the final game. I miss the days with Charlie Weasley, he was one hell of a captain *both Sirius and Lily don’t talk* I will never understand why he went for dragons instead of eternal glory on the field.

*Day of the match and Harry’s detention*

Sirius: Snivellus didn’t just give him our detentions to go through.

James: Yes, yes he did.

Sirius: Merlin I hate him more than I did 20 years ago, I never thought that was possible.

Lily: *shyly* He does that to make sure he reads your name, Sirius. Harry is used to his comments about James but your absence is new to him. He’s just being his cruel self.

Sirius: Well fuck him, Jamie how is the game going?

James: Not bad, not bad at all. Redhead is actually pretty good.

*Hour and a half later*

James: *cheering* THEY WON!

Lily: *surprised* Really?

James: Redhead caught the snitch! I can’t believe this, they won!

*half an hour later*

Sirius: Harry’s off of detention and he’s going to the common room now.

James: Well, a pleasant surprise will be waiting for him.

Lily: Ah look at them, there’s Ginny oh.. OH! Well that’s a way to celebrate

Sirius: YES! LOOK AT THE LITTLE FAWN

James: *dancing* SHE’S A REDHEAD MY DREAMS ARE COMING TRUE

Sirius: *grinning* Resemblance is uncanny.

Lily: Harry, love maybe that’s enough, Ron is watching.

James: And she loves Quidditch

Lily: Molly’s gonna be happy

Sirius: Happy is a very underrated word but wait til the twins find out.

James: And have you seen one of her Bat-Bogey hexes? That girl is awesome.

Sirius: If you are done swooning over your future bride Prongs..

Lily: He secretly wanted them to be together since he rescued Ginny from the Chamber of Secrets, leave him be. It took Harry sometime to take his head out of his ass to see Ginny.

Sirius: *smirking* Evans! That’s your son you are talking about and that reminds me of someone.

Lily: *smiling* Oh shut it Black.

James: Nice one Pads, he’s right you know. Everyone knew you were swooning over me for a good six months before you finally accepted you liked me.

Lily: Except for you, Jamie.

James: Whatever. It’s like us but involving a lot less hexes.

Sirius: He’s like a teenager girl whose two favourite characters finally got together.

James: Fuck off Pads.

Lily: He was like that when you and Remus got together, too.

James: So what? Can’t I be happy for people I love?

Sirius: Sure you can but maybe be a little less enthusiastic?

James: *raising an eyebrow* You are one to talk

Sirius: Okay, got it. I’m out.

Lily: What just happened?

James: Nothing important. Ah! Look at them walking around in the castle talking, if her hair was a bit darker they would look exactly like us.

Lily: *putting his head on James’ shoulder* You are relentless.

James: Tell me you don’t like this.

Lily: I love it.

James: Exactly my point.

JILY CHALLENGE | @howlingremus vs @queensaphrodite
lonely hearts club (marina and the diamonds) + muggle librarian!au

for my amazing partner, @queensaphrodite! and for elena (@meraudurs) and nai (@hiddenpolkadots), for inspiring me to write and create (and for helping me edit this <3)

The library closes far too early, in her opinion. Sure, it closes at eight, and sure, maybe she ought to try just showing up earlier, but in her defense, it isn’t solely her fault. She only gets off work at five, and there are just so many books to read. How are three hours anywhere near enough?

She frequents the place almost every day, knows it like the back of her hand. But there’s something off about it today. Maybe it’s the fact that the historical fiction section switched places with the biography section, but that was last week.

Lily grabs her books and walks up to the counter to ask Peggy whether or not there’s a copy of Everything, Everything available and oh shit that’s what’s different.

There’s a different librarian - a bloke - at the desk, with hair too messy to be legal, glasses too outdated to be unintentionally bought, and a shirt too wrinkled to ever have come in contact with an iron. He’s the kind of fellow who’d be perfect as the main character as one of the books Lily wants to check out - maybe a Peter Pan or a Percy Jackson kind of fellow.

Lily blinks.

Well, fuck.

He looks up from fiddling with the cuffs of his button-down, meets her gaze for a moment, and cocks an eyebrow.

“You’re the first person under forty I’ve seen so far.” His voice almost seems to echo, and it’s much louder than most librarians tend to be.

Lily can’t even tell if he’s being dense or just kind of cocky, but she’ll place her bet on the latter. It’s clear as day in the way he holds himself - self-assured, unashamed, even a bit arrogant but still good-natured.

She crosses her arms. “That’s not true, and you know it. You’re literally right next to the freaking children’s section.”

The bloke laughs, a sound almost out of place in this quiet library. She owes herself twenty dollars.

“Check and mate, I guess. But then again, it’s not like I can really see them.” He taps his glasses with a ridiculously long finger. “They’re getting smaller every day, I swear.”

Lily even smiles at that for a second, before stuffing it back where it came from. This arrogant, loud-mouthed (they’re in a fucking library, has he no sense of volume?), far-too-handsome idiot has no place in this library of hers.

(All the same, she wouldn’t mind reading about someone like him.)

“Yeah, sure” she says, quickly, trying to get to the point. “Listen, do you guys have another copy of Everything, Everything?”

He shrugs. “Hell if I know.”

Lily is done with this bloke. She makes her way around the desk to where he’s sitting, pushes away his chair (“Oi, what d’ya think you’re doing?” but he doesn’t sound particularly annoyed, just curious), opens up the catalog page on the monitor in front of him (the first thing she sees when she opens it up is a March Madness bracket - she now kind-of-sort-of-really wants to punch the guy), and soundlessly types in the words Everything, Everything.

No more copies available, but there’s one currently on hold. And it’s not hers. Damnit.

The guy standing behind her takes a look at her screen, and she can hear him let out a breath. “Oh, shit, that book? Isn’t that the one with like the mysterious guy and the girl who’s supposed to be sick but - “

Lily hastily shoves out her hand, as if to slap it over his rambling mouth. “No spoilers!” she all but yells. And she realizes that she’s being such a hypocrite right now, so she adds, a little bit more quietly, “Please.”

The bloke smirks, like he knows exactly what she’s thinking. “Alright, then.” He peers over at the screen once more, and Lily presses the power button. She gets up, and moves over to the side of the desk that she ought to be on.

“Well,” she says curtly, trying not to smile (for some reason) at this endearing annoying stranger. “Thanks.”

He grins at her. “Don’t mention it.”

Suddenly, something occurs to Lily. “Hold on,” she says slowly. “You’ve read this book?”

For some reason, the bloke turns red. “Er - um, no? I got it for my friend…Marlene? And like I read the summary on the back -”

Lily smirks. “Liar. You’ve totally read it.”

If possible, he turns even redder - it’s quite a funny sight. “I was bored, alright? And it was lying around - I really had bought it for Marlene - and I…may have skimmed it?”

Lily laughs and tucks a strand of red hair behind her ear.  “Why are you acting so defensive? It’s just a book, relax.”

“Well, it’s not as good as the Percy Jackson series.” Besides the point, but Lily can’t deny that it’s true.

“Fair,” she admits.

She notices a watch on his hand (it looks extraordinarily beat-up, made of old leather and a face of cracked glass), and checks the time. Crap, the library closes in a few minutes. “I really should be going,” she says, making sure she has all the books she wants before turning around.

(She’s not sure if she’s imagining it, but the librarian’s face seems to fall slightly.)

Just as Lily’s about to head back, she hears a quiet “Wait.” She turns around.

“What is it?”

“Er.” The librarian looks…pretty sheepish, and he rubs the back of his neck. “What - what does it say on your shirt?”

Lily almost rolls her eyes, and she pulls back the cardigan she’s wearing.

I left my heart in a book,” the guy reads. He looks back up at her.

“Is that, like, for a book club or something?”

Lily stares at him in confusion. “Sorry?”

“The shirt - you must’ve got it from some sort of club.”

“I…got it from Macy’s? So no, not a book club.”

He looks quizzically at her. “You know, you should probably make that shirt a book club, then.”

Lily raises an eyebrow. “For hearts in books?”

“Yeah, something like that. Like, aggressive bibliophiles or something.”

She perches herself on the desk, her legs starting to get tired of standing, and almost ends up knocking over a stapler. “Who’d join?”

“I would.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, and I’d grab some friends, too. Get some drinks, maybe some fries, and master the art of abandoning our poor, forsaken hearts in some dusty old books.”

Lily actually lets out a laugh. “I - don’t think that’s what it means.”

“But wouldn’t that be more dramatic?”

Come to think of it, it would be. Lily tries to envision it, but the only thing that really comes to mind is some sort of cult with an obsession for Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley. And they, of course, take their fries with a small cup of blood.

Anyways. She shrugs, and gets off the desk. “You do have a flair for the dramatics, then. Say, who the hell are you?”

His hands fly up to his hair - for what, to make it even messier? - and ends up almost knocking his glasses off the bridge of his nose.

“Stop giggling, bloody hell. And it’s James.”

Against her better judgement (sod it all, rational thought), she reaches over and pushes up his glasses. His hazel eyes follow her fingers, and he looks a little bit cross-eyed. It’s all a little bit sweet.

“James, is it? Well, I’m Lily, founder of the Hearts in Books Club.” The bloke - James, now - snorts at that, only causing to Lily to giggle even more.

James looks down at his watch . “I think the library closes right about now, you’d best be off.”

Lily swears under her breath, and James raises an eyebrow.

“Now, what was that?” The accent he’s putting on sounds a bit like some old-fashioned English professor, which kind of goes with the button-down, but not with the hair. “You do know you’re near the children’s section, next to so many impressionable young minds - you wouldn’t want to give them the wrong idea -”

“Oh, sod off,” she says, but not before glancing over to see if there’s anyone under the age of ten watching them. She checks to see if she still has all her books, and actually turns to leave.

“See you, Jimmy.” She smirks.

“OI, WATCH IT!”

~

Once she turns the corner, she can’t stop smiling. And even once she gets home and picks up her books and tries to - tries to lose her heart in them, damnit, she can’t stop thinking of James and the Hearts in Books Club and that damn hair.

Fuck, she thinks.

~

Lily returns to the library the next day, of course - she needs to pick up the sequel to Six of Crows, the novel she just finished.

(And she may or may not want to see if James is there.)

(He isn’t. Peggy is back, and though she loves Peggy, she’s a bit disappointed.)

(What is wrong with me, she thinks.)

After finding Crooked Kingdom, finally, she traipses over to the holds section. As far as she remembers, she doesn’t have anything on hold, but it’s always good to check.

There’s a book in her slot.

Furrowing her brows, she reaches up (and, quite embarrassingly, has to get up her tippy-toes; damn her lack of height), and grabs it. It’s hardcover, feels pretty new, and strangely enough, it doesn’t have that clear library binding around it.

The cover reads Everything, Everything. It’s the book she wanted yesterday - the one that the library shouldn’t have an available copy of. Confused, Lily opens the front cover, and the first thing she sees is a little note on a yellow Post-It, scribbled in Sharpie.

Lily,

Can this be the first book of the Hearts in Books Club?

See you Thursdays and Tuesdays.

- James.

There’s a little smiley face doodled next to her name, and Lily feels a strange, swooping feeling that she normally only feels at the end of a really good book.

And oh, fuck, she can’t stop grinning.

(But maybe, when she gets home, it’s something more than the book itself - something having to do with the note on the inside front cover - that prompts her to read it over and over again).

(Maybe. Just maybe).

Remus has alternated between worrying in the common room, practically driving James mad with his pacing, and hovering in the doorway of the dormitory, from which Sirius had yet to emerge from all day. He hadn’t even touched the food plates Remus had brought up for him.

“Moony, c’mon, please.” James removed his glasses, rubbing at his homework-tired eyes, “Either talk to him or don’t but just stop with the fucking-“

“I know, I know.” Remus sighed, falling down onto the couch next to Lily who took his hand sympathetically.

“Has he, y’know, said anything?” Lily asked gently.

“No. Fuck, no, he hasn’t.” Remus ran a hand over his face, “Whatever was in that fucking letter though… God, he won’t even talk to me he’s just sitting on that window ledge fucking staring into space. God, I don’t know if someone died or-“

“I can’t think of someone in that house who could die and he’d react this way about- fuck, ow! Lils, what-“

Lily tossed her book back down, James rubbing his shoulder, “They’re still his family, James! Psycho or not…” She added quietly, quill starting to scratch at her essay again.

James shrugged helplessly at him, and Remus sighed for what felt like the thousandth time.

“I’m going to try again.”

He took the stairs two at a time, only to breathlessly halt in the doorway again. As suspected, Sirius had yet to move. His knees were brought to his chest, arms wrapped tightly around himself. The evening light haloed his profile as he stared out the window over looking the lake and mountains.

Remus bit his lip, finally stepping in and shutting the door softly behind him, never taking his eyes from Sirius. His steps were careful and slow as he approached him.

“Pads?” He cleared his throat, voice coming out too soft.

Sirius didn’t move, didn’t even look up. Remus’ throat tightened. He sighed and gave up on the ‘giving him space’ tactic completely, sitting down on the edge of the window seat, one hand coming up to rest over one of Sirius’ atop his knee. Still, he received no response.

Remus’ brows knit, “Love, please. Please look at me… I want- I need to help you. Merlin, I can’t fucking stand seeing just sitting there all day. I can’t stand seeing you like…” Remus shook his head, holding Sirius’ hand tighter, waiting.

Sirius let out a breath that puffed out his cheeks a bit, and tilted his head back to lean against the stone wall. His eyes moved slowly from the window to Remus’. They were red rimmed and puffy. Remus’ heart broke a little. He doesn’t remember ever seeing Sirius cry before, ever. Not even when he broke his arm in second year.

“Pads..”

Sirius shook his head, silencing Remus immediately. He sat up, scooting forward a little and looking again to Remus. Remus tilted his his head, confused.

“Can we-“ Sirius cleared his throat, voice rough, “Can you… Y’know, like when you’re reading…”

And Remus understood immediately, heart practically melting at the soft request, and scrambled up, sliding easily behind Sirius and pulling his back against his chest, resting Sirius’ body easily between his legs. Remus felt Sirius’ body relax into him at the familiar position, and he wound his arms around his waist, pressing soft kisses to his temple when Sirius let his head drop back against his shoulder.

“Good?” Remus murmured, pushing Sirius’ hair gently off his forehead.

“Mm..” Sirius hummed softly, pressing into Remus’ lips. Remus looked at his closed eyes and turned down mouth and wanted to kiss every sign of worry away.

Sirius let out another breath, fiddling with Remus’ fingers resting atop his stomach, and finally the truth came out.

“They disowned me.”

Remus’ eyes widened at that, “They- what?”

Sirius pressed against Remus, trying to soak up all the comfort and courage he could, “I’m not a Black anymore. At least not to them. I-“ Sirius cursed, hating the way his throat was tightening up, “Fuck, I hate them. I hate them I don’t know why I’m so- I don’t know what’s wrong with me-“

Remus shushed Sirius softly, noting the tears in his voice, and pulled him closer, fitting his hands to his hips to guide Sirius into flipping over and straddling his waist instead, “Pads-“

“And don’t tell me it’s normal to feel this way because I know that, I just don’t want-“ He cursed as tears fell down his cheeks and pressed the heels of his palms to his eyes, “I don’t want to feel like this. Remus, I don’t want to care-“

“I know..” Remus guided Sirius’ hands away from his eyes, taking them both into his own for a moment, kissing the knuckles, before cupping Sirius’ cheeks, thumbs swiping the tears away, “I know you don’t. Merlin, Pads, I…”

Remus didn’t know what to say. ‘Sorry’ didn’t work, because he knew Sirius wouldn’t want to hear that. He had a family who wasn’t like him, whom he hated, but that didn’t make losing that family any easier…

“You have us.” Remus mouth said it before his brain could catch up.

“You have us.” He pushed a hand through Sirius’ hair, “You lost one family but- but one is right here waiting for you, okay? Alright? And we really, really love you. Prongs, Pete, Lils… me.” Remus’ cheeks warmed at the way Sirius was looking at him, “Fuck, Pads, I love you so much, okay? As in I don’t know what to do with this much… emotion half the time-“

Remus let out a relieved smile when Sirius snorted at that, wiping at his eyes with one hand and pressing the other to Remus’ neck, thumb brushing over his pulse point. Remus bit his lip, “But it’s true, really.”

Sirius nodded, pressing his face back into Remus’ neck, letting a few more tears escape but, this time, out of relief and out of love for this boy holding him so tightly.

“You’re everything, Re…” Sirius pressed his lips to Remus’ jaw, “You’re fucking everything.”

Remus just held him tighter, maybe blushing a little, and never wanting to go a whole day without hold Sirius like this again.
