i know everyone and their mother has posted this but whatever

new genre concept: soft apocalypse

the world as we know it has ended and mother nature starts taking back what’s hers. there are no zombies or cannibals or murderous bandits. the most valued members of the community are those who know how to garden and farm, sew and weave, treat wounds, work wood or build with bricks, cook from scratch.

people bond together to begin rebuilding instead of killing each other. everyone teaches each other whatever they do know and works together to figure out the stuff none of them know. books become incredibly valued resources because they’re often the only way to learn critical information. if someone is elderly, disabled, or otherwise unable to work at the same level as most of the community, they’re taken care of by the others, not told any sort of “survival of the fittest” bs.

as the generations ware on, communities begin expanding into small cities. some of the settlements even find ways to repurpose solar or wind power on a small scale and have electricity in some of their buildings. storytellers wander the countryside telling tales of the old world in return for some hot stew or a place to rest for the night, and the mythos of the new world start to incorporate elements of the past. the only thing that remains constant is that humans survive, and they do it by working together.

Storm In The Room certainly was an emotional roller coaster, but not in the way most of us were expecting. You have to know whenever you see one of the rooms of the temple appear, we’re going to be in for emotional whiplash.

Doubly so for Rose Quart’s room.

The one thing we have a tendency to forget is that the room seems to have one purpose: to show whoever possesses the Rose Quartz gem (aka Steven at this point) whatever it thinks they want.

The room can only work with the information Steven already knows. Steven knows this. He says it several times. But given the circumstances, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and forget that. And the room? Just keeps on doing what it was designed to do. Steven wants to meet his mom?

Steven gets to meet his mom.

Steven wants to play games with his mom? Steven gets to play games with his mom.

Steven needs reassurance? He’s told he’s wonderful the way he is and that his mother has been with him the whole time.

And it’s beautiful.

But it’s empty.

Rose’s room holds no answers for him. It can’t tell him anything he doesn’t already know. The sudden reminder that his mother isn’t actually there is jarring.

And the room, struggling to keep up with the sudden shift in Steven’s thoughts makes Rose dark, threatening and distant. She doesn’t answer any of Steven questions about Bismuth, Pink Diamond, the rebellion or her plans because the room simply doesn’t have the information to do so with.

Maybe they didn’t matter to you as much as hiding from the mess you made. And that’s why I’m here, isn’t it? Did you make me just so you wouldn’t have to deal with all your mistakes?

Steven is smart. Steven is perceptive. He was born into a situation that no one, let alone a child, should have to deal with. He’s strong, he’s capable, but in so many ways he has no one who truly understands what he’s going through. He’s human and gem, and while this gives him the strengths of both, it also makes him totally unique and new. He has an amazing support system, people who would do anything in this universe to help him. But in some ways he will always be alone.

He’s never met Rose Quartz, the one individual that was the catalyst for the rebellion and its aftermath. Steven is going from the bedtime story/ fairy tale Rose Quartz presented to him from Greg and the gems to the reality behind the legend- something decisively less fairy tale like. That’s something that happens to a lot of us growing up, but in Steven’s situation it’s so much worse.

He never knew the Rose Quartz everyone idolized, but grew up knowing that everyone expected him to be just like her.  But as he learns more about her, he finds that there was so much more to her. She wasn’t necessarily the kind, generous, wise, strategic genius warrior she was painted as. She lied. She didn’t think things through. She made mistakes. She ran from those mistakes.

Everyone around him expects him to grow up to be just like Rose, and he’s not even sure he likes her. Turning into her is both his dream and his worst nightmare.

We don’t know all the reasoning behind why Rose decided to become/create Steven. I have no doubt that it was definitely a strategic move on her part. She knew that Steven would be capable of doing things she never could, that in whatever was coming from Homeworld, she herself would not be able to do what was needed to save both Earth and whatever gems would come their way.

But I also have no doubt that it was a labor of love, that she absolutely would want Steven to exist without having to deal with her problems, IF that was possible. Steven had watched the tape his mom made for him, so the room? It knew what Steven needed to be reminded of.

I get it. I know you didn’t want me to deal with your problems. But you’re a part of me now. I have to deal with what you left behind.

Whether Steven’s creation was a strategic move on Rose’s part or not is a moot point. He’s here and he has to handle the problems she left in her wake. He’s growing up and he needs answers. And as he’s coming to find, those answers aren’t necessarily easy to deal with.

But, when it comes down it, Steven isn’t alone. Maybe his support system isn’t perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. They love him, they love each other, and they’ll get through this together.

Sometimes what’s let behind isn’t so bad after all.

What I think of the MOON signs:

Aries: A lot of mental activity, thinking too much about what interests them. They could be intellectuals. They may appear calm on the outside, but a tornado is going on inside them. Optimistic, very competitive and impatient. They live for the moment, forgetting all else. That’s the reason they change their mind so easily about everything. Very curious, but opinionated. The Aries moon at it’s worst may blame things on others, unable to take responsibility. However, they don’t hold grudges and are usually kind and easygoing, wanting to do the right thing because they aim to live up to this ideal image they have of themselves, whatever that ideal is. If I had to give some advice to this moon sign it would be: not everyone is out to get you, enjoy yourself, RELAX!! and don’t let your need to be the best, even when you are, poison yourself and your relationships. Celebrities with this moon: Angelina Jolie, Nicolas Sarkozy, Bill Gates, Rihanna.

Taurus
: Charming, very charming. Has a great sense of humor and loves companionship. They will tell you stories, they will make you feel warm. They may not take criticism well, but who does? They do not like to be rushed into things, they like stability and comfort even when being adventurous. They may enjoy shopping too much. Ruled by Venus, they are romantic and affectionate in love, sometimes possessive, and they chose love over friendship. Depending on the Sun and Venus, this moon can be extremely jealous. But wishing to keep balance they will hide it under a passive aggressive attitude which can cause more wrong than right. They look for the best in people and usually will find themselves giving too much, but their desire to maintain balance will help them stay on track. They look more reasonable than they are. If I had to give some advice to this moon sign it would be: keep shining, but don’t be so proud. Not everything is like you see it. Sometimes it’s OK to fuck up and admit it. Celebrities with this moon: Christina Aguilera, Cameron Diaz, Mother Teresa, Chris Brown, Jim Morrison.

Gemini: Absent minded? You bet! However they compensate that through their wit and curiosity. They are versatile and easy going. Even on the least easy going suns a Lunar Gemini will ease up the chart. They mean well, I do believe this, mostly because they are not interested in what other people are doing. They do not get caught up in gossip and do their own thing. They can be irritable and moody, but not usually. They are lazy even though they want to have a hand on everything! They have so much they want to do, but their minds go faster than their power of will. They are nervous thought, and if they have a problem they may not know how to act upon it and feel paralyzed. Gemini moons are fun and very chill. At their worst, Lunar Geminis can be very cold and indifferent. If I had to give some advice to this moon sign it would be: you are capable of anything if you work! You are not alone… And look around more, be warmer. Celebrities with this moon sign: Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, Alyssa Milano, Jennifer Lawrence.

Cancer: are cancers tired of hearing they are emotional? Yes, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Cancer, as a moon sign, is powerful because the moon is the realm of emotions. Being emotional doesn’t mean weak, on the contrary, a Cancer moon has to be strong to be able to feel as they do. And Cancer moons are indeed strong. They are tender and sweet, and a roller coaster of emotional outbursts. They are in touch with their feelings, so much so, sometimes they get too caught up in them, becoming self-absorbed as if their own emotions are the only emotions that matter. What’s the problem with this? That if they are feeling pain they tend to forget the good things in their life and instead of trying to get better, the get lost in self-pity. They have a good memory and a soft heart, even when you least expect it. They do not do well with criticism, they do not take jokes lightly. They love, they love a lot, even through their mood swings. And find it hard to let go. Do not take this moon sign for granted, they are loyal AF. If I had to give some advice to this moon sign it would be: you need to act more and build the future instead of clinging to the past. Celebrities with this moon sign: Taylor Swift, Kurt Cobain, Keanu Reeves, Shakira.

Leo: This moon is outgoing and bright. Yes they need attention, yes they love flattery, yes they can be overly dramatic and yes, as the Leo they are, they do think highly of themselves. And that’s part of the reason they are so successful, they are confident and know they are more than capable of handling anything. They truly are more than capable. They are proud, but have qualities to back it up, and you can’t hate them because they are loving. All that they have for an Ego they have for a heart. They need a lot of love and even though they know they are great, they want to hear it. If you want to cheer them up, genuinely tell them the good qualities you see in them or let them win at a game they love. This is a nice moon to hang around with, a romantic moon, a quick to anger moon, and a moon that won’t try to hurt you, unless you stand in their way. They can be dramatic and get this, they hate drama. They love the whole “nobody loves me” and slamming doors, but oh boy! they‘ll think you are crazy if you act like them. If I had to give some advice to this moon sign it would be: yes, we love you, but do not act so dramatic! Celebrities with this moon sign: Julia Roberts, Mahatma Gandh, Monica Bellucci, Tom Cruise.

Virgo: yes, this whole post was about my perception on the moon signs, but I must warn you I am especially biased about this one… I’ve met so many Virgo moons! Many people I love have Virgo Moons! (I am a Virgo rising myself) And I love them, but we crush. All Virgo moons I have come in contact with were and are… way too… critical. They don’t seem to know you have feelings. They will say nasty comments about your personality, hobbies, clothes… but will get angry at the slightest thing you say to them, and they will over-think it for ages. For even though they are hard on others, they are hard on themselves as well. They do not realize their own defects. However, once they do, they will try to correct them. They also say the good stuff… but not so often. They are sharp and they love a good debate. These people are smart and may involve themselves in jobs that allow them to help humanity. They are not mean or petty, just critical and defensive because they want to make things perfect and be perfect (perfect from their point of view). If I had to give some advice to this moon it would be… yes, you guessed! Watch your words, they cut. No, you are not always right and you don’t need to be. And not because you don’t like something does it mean it’s wrong. Celebrities with this moon sign: Madonna, Dalai Lama, Nicki Minaj, Sean Connery.

Libra: Another very charming moon sign, but unlike their sun sign, the Libra moon person is more secretive. They love love. They are very romantic, it can break their heart. They want to be liked and do not enjoy arguing and outbursts of emotion. They can be superficial and vain, but they are also sweet and peace oriented. They are dreamy, calm, they want to open up, they have a lot in their minds, more so then what they are willing to share. They can be extravagant - for some reason - and quiet. They have a dark side: they can get caught up in their negative emotions but never share it with the world. They might be artsy, bohemian, and proudly so, and they all have a personal sense of style. Whatever they are inside- hippie, hipster, painter, lawyer - they will dress to show it. You can tell a lot about these people from their clothes. They might not be terribly steady in love, sometimes they fall for too many people at once. If I had to give some advice to this moon it would be: there is more than what meets the eye, there’s more than looking for others approval. Celebrities with this moon sign: Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Bieber, Kate Winslet, Jude Law.

Scorpio: This moon is sensual and dark, this moon wants passion, this moon is romantic and is not afraid of commitment! This moon wants loyalty and is loyal. They are dramatic, very dramatic, like a Leo moon, but without the bright disposition. They are egocentric and at the same time, giving. They hold grudges, but if they love you, you won’t need any reassurance because they will be there showing you. They are hot headed and domineering, they like to feel in control. They are jealous and fear betrayal. They will not put up with your bullshit for too long. They have a strong will and they will get where they want to in life. Do not mess with them. They will not take revenge, but they will not forgive you. They feel a lot, and also expect a lot from others. If I had to give some advice to this moon it would be: chill, chill, chill. Not everything is about you, trust a little more, lighten up! You will be glad you did. Celebrities with this moon sign: Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry.

Sagittarius: This moon is curious, careless, optimistic and has a childlike manner to it. They look chill to others. They talk quickly, and are a bit impatient. They are naive, afraid of commitment and dislike restrictions. They need space and personal freedom to be happy. They are carefree and may not always be in tune with others emotions, sometimes they are oblivious to how others feel. They will be there if you open up, but may not be the most empathetic of ears. If things get tough, they will run away. They like to do research and could do well in this area, thanks to their curiosity. They want to explore the world and meet new people, they like talking and can get irritated easily. If I had to give some advice to this moon it would be: Sometimes grounding yourself is needed, sometimes you see more by looking within than by avoiding quietness. It is OK to sit with oneself, don’t avoid things out of fear of working through the rough parts. Celebrities with this moon sign: Albert Einstein, Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Capricorn: this moon is closed up. This moon needs to feel productive and they measure their worth through their ability to get somewhere in life. They want money and material things and YET they will cultivate a spiritual side. This moon worries about everything. A woman (or a person with feminine energy) with this moon is loyal and stable, a man (or person with masculine energy) with this moon sign, however, finds it hard to be with one woman because they do not know how to be vulnerable. They have will power and emotional strength, they will give you everything you need if you ask - you’d have to ask as they do not know what people need. This moon cares about their style as well, like the Libra moon, this moon dresses up for the job they want, as they say. They like shopping. They can also be alone for long periods of time, they do not mind being in their room all day. Something most people do not expect of this moon sign is their high sexual drive! They can be very kinky and like to sleep around. This moon is cautious, and doesn’t take risks. They like to know the outcome and will think of all the possibilities before rushing into things. If I had to give some advice to this moon it would be: oh, you, it’s ok to be vulnerable. If you never open up, you will miss your life. Take risks, maybe not always, but do not let love pass you by because of fear. Celebrities with this moon sign: Amy Winehouse, Adolf Hitler, Johnny Depp, Napoleon.

Aquarius: what a witty moon to have. In my opinion, this position makes a person fast, goofy and brainy. They are detached and bubbly, they look not as smart as they truly are. They like attention, but will not give it to you! They are aloof. They care about facts, though. They call it the Aquarian Age for a reason. They want to know things, but will not argue with you if you do not see things as they do. They like to keep their emotions to themselves and do not like to be serious. So maybe, listening to others talking about their problems is not their strength. They just want to chill! If a sarcastic comment is what you need, go talk to them. They care about history and humanity, they want to make a difference. If I had to give some advice to this moon it would be:: care about people a little more, ok? They might need you as much as you need them. Celebrities with this moon sign: Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, John Lennon, Conan O'brien.

Pisces: Yes this moon sign is the most compassionate and empathetic of all the moon signs. This moon is psychic, and will know how you are feeling even better than you. They can easily feel overwhelmed by the harsh demands of this world and, at their worst they can turn to drugs or other ways to escape reality. However, they are funny, goofy and optimistic, they live in their dream world and seem to be in a far away land. Even though they can be masochistic, and can be a pushover, this moon sign sees everything and everyone with rose colored glasses, including their future. They think everything will be alright even if death is right in front of them, they will think they are dating a kind person even if they find them cheating on them every Saturday. They are indeed innocent, gullible, but what most people do not know about this moon sign is that once they see you for you, there is no way back. They put people they love on pedestals, but if you fall, it will be hard for them to put you up there again. Which is not a bad thing, it is better not be on a pedestal anyway. However, the problem is, when they get betrayed or hurt, they start to think the worst of people. They will not revenge, but maybe they won’t let you back into their life, they are afraid to be vulnerable. It is easier for them to be there for others than to be there for themselves and show the world all the messy they are inside. They feel guilty over everything and even though they care about people a lot, sometimes they have trouble showing it. If I had to give some advice to this moon sign it would be: love yourself more, take care of yourself and do not be a doormat. And stop the self-pity. Celebrities with this moon sign: Michael Jackson, Michelle Obama, Martin Luther King, Elvis Presley.

Horizon Zero Dawn and Cultural appropriation: A very different view.

For the first time EVER, I’m sitting on the other side of a discussion about appropriating native culture.  Why?  Well, let me lay the framework.

First off, I’m not a guy who “knows a Native American” or has a “Native friend”  I am a 100% Anishinabe (Ojibway) dude who lives on reserve and has fought racism, stereotypes, pan-Indianism, and cultural appropriation fiercely for as long as I can remember. I’ve been the victim of horrendous racial violence as a child, adolescent, and adult, and I’m also a gamer.

I am the first to point out anything that smacks of any of the above and after I saw the Dia Lacina essay on “Horizon: Zero Dawn” being culturally insensitive and appropriating Native culture, I felt for the first time in a situation like this that I had to say something in rebuttal.

Lacina takes issue with the use of the words Tribal, Primitive, Braves, and Savage being used in the game (fyi they’re used to describe predominantly white people in game and they’re White words we didn’t use to describe ourselves thus I claim no ownership of, nor want to, anymore than I want to be a redskin, Indian or Wahoo)

It seems (IMO) that most of her beef comes from an apparent belief that numerous aspects of generic tribal culture that appear in the game (making clothing from skins, hunting with spears and bows, living in a Matriarchal society, etc) are the sole domain of the Native American and just to be safe and cleverly keep her POV less subject to scrutiny, she applies it even more broadly to indigenous people world wide (I will just refer to us in particular as NA cuz I’m lazy and I also don’t refer to myself as a Native American) and basically that anything that is remotely “tribal” shouldn’t be used in gaming without our or someone else’s permission.

In fairness, I don’t know if she’s actually played the game but as someone who is currently in the midst of doing exactly that, I can tell you that I have a pretty good idea of what stuff triggered her being upset and why, and while I absolutely respect her right to get offended by whatever she likes, and she makes excellent points about some other games, I am going to point out that there are flaws with this logic.

First of all, the basics: HZD is set in a post-post-apocalyptic future where people are living in tribal groups in a very destroyed world.  Machines exist but as hybrid animal/dinosaur type creatures and technology is pretty much non-existent in day to day human life.

The heroine of the story is a red haired, white girl named Aloy who lives as an outcast with her adopted father, Rost.  Without giving a lot away, they are fiercely shunned by the local tribe for something Rost did and also the fact that Aloy is motherless.

Impressively and rightly, though somewhat dismissively remarked upon by Lacina, is the way women and especially women of color are portrayed so positively in-game as this particular tribe is a total Matriarchy run by elders of various ethnicity.  African, Asian, White, and a variety of undefined people of color are common everywhere in the game.  (The leader of one band of warriors is a very fierce, commanding, intelligently portrayed black woman with a powerful presence.)  It reflects a fairly global society from a “skin color” perspective without any horrible accents or broken speech.

They worship an “All-Mother” goddess and their culture is (at least how I saw a lot of it) fairly heavy on European i.e. Celtic, Germanic, Scandinavian, etc type symbolism and the rest is filled in with mostly generic tribal-ish stuff that you could find in countless cultures around the world.

I really didn’t get a “Native American” vibe off the game.  Of course, I don’t automatically presume to claim sole ownership of things like tribal life, hunting with bows and spears, and worshiping spirits of various elements solely for my own.  Random fact: Because there are over 500 distinct First Nations in N. America, we, believe it or not, didn’t all ride horses, live in tipis, use bows and arrows, tobacco and sage, and worship Eagles and Wolves.  Why? Well…use your brain.  Tobacco and Sage don’t grow EVERYWHERE, horses came over with the Europeans (and if you saw where I live you couldn’t have and cant for the most part get a horse through the bush if you tried) Eagles and Wolves don’t live EVERYWHERE….get the point?  Anyways….

If you examine Rost, he like most of the men has a braided beard and other seemingly Viking/Middle Ages inspired features, is white, speaks clear, unbroken English, and is a loving, protective and very positive role model for the girl.   Aloy for her part, is also fairly Viking-esque (to the point of looking incredibly like Lagaertha from the show Vikings but with red hair) also Egrit from GoT, and is no damsel in distress who needs men to save her. NOWHERE in the game have I encountered any Tipis, wigwams, Sweatlodges, or Non-White people speaking in stereotypical “Me smoke-um peace pipe, He go dat-a way” fashion.

The  opening cinematic is very touching (and long) as we see the orphaned Aloy as a baby in Rost’s care being carried around in a bundle on his back (which pretty much every culture did in one form or another at some point in time) and him ultimately taking her to the spot where a child of the tribe receives it’s name.

I really liked this idea as it isn’t often portrayed in a lot of mediums outside of stereotypical “Dances With Wolves” bullshit. Also, naming ceremonies are not the sole domain of NA people and what occurs bears zero resemblance to any NA ceremony I know of.  (It was actually a little Lion King at one point lol) But it’s a powerful moment in the beginning with much more that occurs during it but I won’t spoil that either.

Aloy herself is a pretty complex character.  She’s extremely independent, defiant, and questions pretty much everything about why things are the way they are and wants to do something about it.  You actually begin playing her as a 6 year old which is pretty unique and even then she’s tough and fearless and determined to explore her world.

She is in no way hyper-sexualized (I’m looking your way Overwatch) Her clothing and everyone else’s, is utilitarian and appropriate for the environments she lives in, and so far, I have not encountered anything with her or any other character that made me go “WTF?”and trust me, my radar for that shit is HIGHLY SENSITIVE.  This isn’t Avatar, people.  It’s not John Smith. It’s not The Great Wall or Pocahontas.  This isn’t white dude shows up and saves the helpless non-white people while helpless native woman falls in love with him stuff.  It’s a fictitious future where we maniacs blew it up, damn us all to hell!

But here’s the more annoying thing for me as an actual Anishinabe.  I don’t need people speaking for me or getting offended on my behalf.  I am very capable of doing that myself. I am also in no way writing this claiming to be speaking for any other NA people or persons. It’s based on my observations from actually playing HZD and examining the various fictional “cultural” elements in the game.

If you see a skin tied inside a hoop and automatically assume it’s a dreamcatcher” ripping off “our culture” (FYI Dreamcatchers are a 20th century thing whose popularity was a result of pan-Indianism that exploded in the 70s.) or if you see feathers on a spear or as part of a costume (nowhere is anyone wearing a single eagle feather in the back of a beaded headband or a Dakota looking headdress either) and automatically presume it to be ripping off NA culture, you’re REEEEEEEEEEALY reaching.  If you think caring for the environment, obeying matriarchs, worshipping elemental spirits, or making your own clothes is solely the property of NA culture, see previous statement.

By all means get offended.  Get offended by Chief Wahoo.  Get offended by the Washington Redskins.  Get offended that thousands of Native women have been murdered or gone missing and nothing’s been done about it.  Get offended by Johnny Depp or Robert Beltran playing Native people instead of actual Native people getting those roles.  Get offended by shit like Adam Sandler’s “Ridiculous 6” where a native woman is called a “hot piece of red prairie meat” or Depp’s “Lone Ranger” movie.

Get offended that my family was destroyed by the Residential Schools and that the 60s scoop took babies away from their families and people, that forced sterilizations took place and mass graves of dead Native children exist at former Residential School sites.

Don’t just jump on the I’m offended bandwagon because you saw some feathers or skins or spears or bows in a game and immediately grew indignant and wanted to claim them as OUR culture.  They’re not.  They’re almost globally universal in numerous cultures at various points in time.  Get offended, as she rightly mentioned, when the game Overwatch sexualizes the shit out of almost every female character and takes West Coast tribal art and makes a costume out of it.

THAT is appropriation.  White people holding powwows in Europe (powwows are also pretty much not traditional and are extremely pan-Indian, not to mention full of us appropriating each other’s Native cultures ie. Dakotas wearing Jingle Dresses, Ojibway wearing Dakota regalia, etc) is appropriation.

This game……I’m just not seeing it the same way.  And I’m nobody.  I have no ties to Guerilla or anybody other than myself and my community.

i found this post in my drafts and have ZERO memory of writing it (thank u alcohol) so im gonna put it in my queue lol
  • ok but imagine
  • Bitty comes out to his parents but he doesn’t tell them about Jack, thinks it’s for the best, maybe to ease his parents into things or maybe to keep the pool of People Who Know as small as possible
  • and like yeah Ransom and Holster are super oblivious but Suzanne Bittle is not, not when it comes to her son, because she is a certified Nosy Southern Mother and she can see he’s been acting differently, happier but quieter, always on his phone and blushing when she asks about boys
  • and he talks about the team a LOT
  • Jack’s one of his best friends and he’s just started his NHL career, so of course Bitty’s never gonna shut up about Jack
  • (Same goes for Shitty and law school. And eventually Ransom and med school. Dicky is proud of his friends and wants everyone to know. He gets that trait from Suzanne, she understands)
  • but he keeps talking about this one Boy, how sweet he is and how his smile is like a sack of puppies and how bitty’s always making this boy do things with him like baking and getting froyo and going shopping and Suzanne is like. Yes. This must be Dicky’s secret boyfriend.
  •  the next family weekend or whatever, Suzanne demands to meet this Chowder boy who’s stolen Bitty’s heart
  • Bitty is both confused and mortified

BEST FRIEND

This word now and days can mean two or more things: 1.) someone you can count on in the time of need. 2.) someone you can be your crazy ass around with and share memes that you know might end both of your asses in hell for laughing at them. And 3.) someone you can call on when a bitch think your still playing games in 2017

Here is my opinion on the Mars Signs, as BEST FRIEND

ARIES MARS:

Stereotypical, yes, you can call their crazy ass to a fight. But don’t bother trying to tell them to ‘fucking chill’ because they are the ‘head strong’ type of best friend and are not passive to defend themselves against even their closest friends’ bullshit. Will explode on you for doing them wrong, or saying/doing some dumb shit.

TAURUS MARS:

This is that mom in your group of friends who always seems to have their life together and won’t break down, ever. Advice is always given but if they see it’s just going through one ear to the other, your on your own. And once they cut you out of their life, that’s it. No catching up again in two years, no happy birthdays on your Facebook feed, not even a hello to your mother who keeps asking about them. The ‘once I’m done, I’m done’ best friend.

GEMINI MARS:

Thinks they are always right and that anyone who disagrees is below them. There is no point arguing with them, even if they are in the wrong, they will still try to win the argument. Thinks they are better than you and will prove themselves til the day they die. Many find them annoying and will stop talking to them, after a few conversations. Will give opinion, even if not asked. But if you can handle this and or love a good mind prodding, this person is for you. ‘Smart ass’ type of best friend.

CANCER MARS:

Thinking this one won’t be as bad? Your wrong. This is the type to double cross your ass on the court and act like everything is okay when you break your ankles. They feel a lot and will constantly need to be told that yes, you value them and the friendship. Moody and emotional, sometimes you might wonder why you stick around them. But then they just surprise you with some shit and you forget about it. The ‘thrower of shade behind your back shade but will also buy you food to make up for it’ best friend.

LEO MARS:

Insult them or their interests, get ready for a semi-dramatic show of a mix between ‘coming for your edges’ and ‘shut up, your just hating’. Not sure if they know that yes they too, have faults. No one is perfect. Well, they seem to think they are. Loyal af, at times. Has a hard time letting some things go, must defend til the end. ‘Sometimes-annoying-but-you-still-fuck-with-them’ type of best friend.

VIRGO MARS:

Honestly, this one is complicated. Can range from being a perfectionist over their life that was fine five days ago but now some bullshit popped up, and they over-whelmed themselves over some tiny shit. Something always pisses them off, and or makes them annoyed. Always knows how to fix everyone else’s lives, but can barely fix their own. Will be distant and get moody when things don’t go their way. The ‘I told your ass that would happen’ best friend.

LIBRA MARS:

That one person in your group of friend who thinks they have their life together, and will put on the show that they do. But- they procrastinate on everything.  Probably be the same one to be late on graduation day because they were hungry. Will seem clingy sometimes, but its because they care. Or so I’ve been told. Honestly, the friendship is gonna be a semi-cycle of you always reminding them to do something or the other. The ‘I’m more worried about you then myself’ type of best friend.

SCORPIO MARS:

Your never really sure if this is just a friendship or something more, they don’t really let out much on their own behalf. Yet, will let you vent to them anytime, quietly collecting your dirty laundry just in cause you decide to pull the wrong move and betray their trust. Might get jealous of outsiders coming between the two of you, but will cover it to deal with later.  A good hider of emotions behind a friendly mask. The ‘okay, we will see’ type of best friend.

SAGITTARIUS MARS:

Might impulsively do something that you both regret later but remember it as a good memory. Will get in fights/arguments but will forget about them and move on the next day. Always down to do some wild shit, but also talk about things that are not considered appropriate to talk about to other people. They tend to get aggressive with certain things, sometimes more than less at times. The ‘wild and kinda-serious’ or ‘good mix-ish’ type of best friend.

CAPRICORN MARS:

Almost too serious and your always trying to cheer them up. Some shit is happening or they are worrying about some shit with someone close to them- worry, stress and won’t confess for them. Rather suffer in the shadows than deal with people getting in their business. Will go through the five stages, and in the end, just say “it’s life” and shrug while you didn’t even know what the fuck is going on. Kinda gotta tip-toe around them, but once your friends with them, y’all are friends. The ‘don’t worry about me, worry and improve yourself’ type of best friends.

AQUARIUS MARS:

Not exactly passive, but is not willing nor wants to deal with your bullshit. Does not care for your opinion about their life, because they know what they need to improve on. But doesn’t want to hurt your feelings, so they listen to your rants over some guy/girl who is playing games with you or how your so called ‘friends’ keep trashing you like, ??? What do you want them to do? They’ll listen, and give their two cents, but besides that- don’t come at them with a problem with no plans of finding a solution. The ‘honestly, couldn’t care less but whatever ’ type of best friend.

PISCES MARS:

Seems moody and is, their mood shifts with the environment around them. One person gets mad at some shit, they get mad at some shit. Worried about everyone’s opinions about them and tries to not offend everyone. Eventually learns that people will hate for no reason and for some dumb reasons. Blows off irrational emotions instead of dealing with them. But their someone you can come to trust, eventually. The ‘I’m ready when you are’ or ‘a gauge between heaven and hell’ type of best friend.

*makes a post complaining about how everyone writes Natsu OOC*

“But, Alisha! You don’t write him entirely in character either!”

You’re right! But there’s a difference, you see!

There are four (4) five (5) types of Natsu(s?) popular in fanfiction!

1) (My personal least favorite) Fuckboi player!Natsu. Probably plays football. Is an asshole. Might bully Lucy because I guess that’s attractive in a man. Is failing math class and/or English and Lucy may or may not tutor him for whatever reason. Dates a different girl every week. Lucy magically changes his ways.

Sometimes included, but not required:

  • Lisanna being a jealous bitch because???
  • Sting and/or Rogue’s characterization being butchered and them attacking/assaulting Lucy, thus making Natsu realize how much he cares about Lucy.
  • Lucy being uncomfortable going to sport’s games but her friends (namely Erza and Levy) dragging her to one anyway. Bonus points if something terrible happens at the game and Lucy immediately forgives her friends.

2) The Natsu that’s not smart enough to spell “cabbage.” Doesn’t know what sex is, thus introducing a weird subplot where someone (typically Lucy or Gray) must explain it to him. This is more uncomfortable to the reader than it is for the characters. Usually over-exaggerates the dragon slayers’ dragoness. Lucy is repeatedly emotionally hurt in these fics because the reader has made Natsu too stupid to understand what feelings are.

Sometimes included, but not required:

  • Weird dragonesque Natsu smut. Probably kinky. May be a dragon mating season fic.
  • Lisanna is evil and somehow Lucy ends up leaving the guild (may or may not become a dragon slayer).
  • If written in canonverse, there will be a mission that Natsu botches. Lucy will probably be injured in some way, and Natsu will realize he loves her, then abandon her because he’s ashamed of hurting her. Bonus points for every chapter this is drawn out.

3) The Natsu that is weirdly snarky and mean spirited. I think the writers are trying to make things sound teasing, but he comes off as an utter dick. Probably a high school!AU. Can be meshed with Natsu #1 to create the biggest douche you will ever see. Is probably sexist and speaks really badly about women, but this is excused because his mother abandoned him as a child.

Sometimes included, but not required:

  • Says something insensitive to Lucy. She cries and is deeply hurt. He never apologizes for this because ??? Potatoes, I guess.
  • If in canonverse, Happy is also probably super mean to Lucy, despite Happy being the most upset about F!Lucy’s death (though, he was roughly on par with how upset Natsu was.).

4) (the Natsu I try to write) This is the Natsu that would exist in canon if Mashima actually gave him character development. Likely pretty close to how he is in canon, though a little more suave and mature. Smarter than the average bear fic Natsu. Still playful and adventurous. Probably still takes Lucy on some kind of adventure. May be a bit rough around the edges.

5) (a la @snogfairy) Dream Boy Natsu. A fantasy man that is perfect in every imaginable way. Is nothing like the actual Natsu. Romantic™. Sophisticated™. An intellectual Man™. Probably reads minds. A fourteen year old girl’s wet dream. Might be a nice guy™.

Sometimes included, but not required:

  • Lucy is a mega blushing virgin. When asked what’s in a guys pants she answers “carrots.” Has no friends.
  • Natsu probably has some hidden piano playing skill. Or, like, the harp or something else that’s sophisticated.
  • Says shit like “cumbersome.”

Thank you @snogfairy.

Talks Machina Highlights
  • Pirate-themed intro!
  • Skype with Kit Buss! A magical picture frame!
  • Kit was Liam’s wrangler at a con in London, and he was immediately impressed with her art. They kept in touch afterwards, and Liam immediately brought her up to do the character art when the show got started.
  • Liam’s original character description he provided to Kit was extremely detailed. In contrast, Laura’s description was “Make me look hot.”
  • Kit’s always had quite a bit of creative license to make the official character portraits, beyond those provided descriptions.
  • Kit’s reaction to getting a new character-arc request: “It figured it would be Sam.” She got the request two days before Taryon showed up, when only Matt and Sam knew.
  • Original character concept for Tary: “Richard Branson meets Tony Stark with a dash of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.”
  • Kit would love to do an episode with Mary Elizabeth–she made Lilith a tiefling because she loved Zahra so much.
  • Kit was so emotional at one of the more brutal parts of the Whitestone Arc that she had to go hide in the bathroom at work for five minutes.
  • Lilith’s voice was based on the doll in the hunter’s dream in Bloodborne.
  • Kit has continued to play Lilith in a game DMed by High Rollers’ Mark Hulmes
  • Brian: “EpiSODE 87.” Marisha: “Why do you say it like an asshole?”
  • Both Keyleth and Marisha, deep down, are kind of hoping that her mother is dead, because otherwise she’s alive and just never came back.
  • Brian messes up Vex/Vax again. “Critrolestats… please delete your account.”
  • Pirate ship names! Liam: “The Salty Bastard”. Taliesin: “The Purple Mane”. Liam: “The Raven’s Lullabye, The Ocean’s Bulge”. Taliesin: “The Dignity and Impudence”. Marisha: “…The Dignity and Impotence?”
  • Keyleth would be more likely to accept her mother’s death if it was part of the Aramente, so she wouldn’t be as likely to react strongly against the Kraken the way she did against Raishan.
  • If Percy could get rid of the magical feats, he would. He’s okay with the magical items he uses because a lot of them are thinly magical or sort of anti-magical. He doesn’t like not knowing why something doesn’t work. Marisha: “Is that how you feel about Keyleth?” Taliesin points out that Percy’s prepared for Keyleth to wind up completely vulnerable for no other reason than that somebody comes in and snaps their fingers.
  • Taliesin: “If you’ve learned anything about me, it’s that I can put anything in this studio in my mouth.” Liam: “I mean, I’m right here.”
  • Liam: “I think we’re both a little competitive. (whispers) [Laura]’s more competitive.”
  • Taliesin describes Taryon as Scrappy Doo.
  • Out-of-context quote from Marisha: “I don’t want anyone to think I’m shitting on sommeliers.”
  • Brian: “This is my favorite episode of whatever the fuck this show is.”
  • Keyleth thinks it’s kinda nice that somebody is looking up to her a bit.
  • Vax has been spending more time with Grog because he wants him to be happy, and feels closer to him now that a lot of the tension between them has dissipated. Liam doesn’t trust Travis not to restart the prank war, though…
  • Taliesin describes Percy/Vex as “leaning positively into the bad decision.”
  • Liam points out that without Vex in his life, Percy might veer off into a Sith sort of direction. Taliesin is inclined to agree, and notes that, punk-rock as she is, Vex keeps Percy from going too dark.
  • Marisha points out that a lot of people coming to LA build a chosen family, which is what happened with their group. Liam: “Vox Machina is a family because we’re a family. It just bleeds through.” Taliesin notes that it seems like D&D should always veer in that direction, but he’s never had a game actually go that way to the extent that this one has.

After Dark:

  • Magical reappearance of Kit Buss!
  • Liam thinks it’s a toss-up between Vax, Keyleth, and Grog accidentally killing the Kraken. Vax: “I’m just gonna teach him a lesson– oh, he’s dead.”
  • Taliesin once dyed his hair half-black, half-white and braided it into a checkerboard.
  • Possibility of updated character art with the Vestiges!
  • Liam points out that the beauty of the show is that it shifts from deep and meaningful moments to goofy messing-with-friends moments on a dime. It’s simultaneously a very deep show and fundamentally a game.
  • Taliesin can see Keyleth as Yoda in the future. Marisha: “Yeah, totally!”
  • Everyone would love to see Kit’s take on Senokir and Raishan.
  • When Matt described Captain Adella, Kit thought of Zamira Drakasha from the Gentleman Bastards series.
  • Brian’s official ship names: Kevaxleth and VexPex.

Your myth retellings are gorgeous. Would you tell another please? Maybe something with Hermes?

Pandora is made from earth, shaped by the hands of Hephaestus and made in the image of his beloved wife. Aphrodite gifts her with grace and charisma. Athena teaches her to weave and bestows cleverness upon her.

She stands in front of Hermes, and the god frowns and touches her with a single fingertip on her chin, moving her head one way than the other. “They’ll eat you alive,” he says, and she doesn’t understand.

She tilts her head to the side and smiles a vacant smile. All of the cleverness in the world will do her no good without any context. “We are the same,” she says, pressing a hand to Hermes’s chest. She is made from earth and has the skin to mach. He is a celestial god, and his skin is the same rich shade of brown.

He did not ask to be born any more than his mother asked to bare him. His creation, just like hers, is at the whims of Zeus. All for some little lost fire, all because Prometheus wanted his people to be warm, and, well, he is the god of the thieves after all –

So he gifts her with deceit, with selfishness, with cunning. Her smile leaves her face all at once as she’s filled with self-awareness. “He’ll be angry with you,” she says, “I am not what you were supposed to make.”

“Gods have short memories,” he says, and doesn’t bother to hide the contempt in his voice. “Do not worry about me, gifted child. You have larger problems than my fate.”

He has turned her from something pure into – something more like him. Her face darkens even further as her perfectly crafted mind slots all the pieces together, and he can’t help but find her lovely. It’s how she was made, after all. “I can’t stop it, can I? Whatever they’re planning for me to do?”

“No,” Hermes says, “but now you might be able to survive it.”

“Will I want to?” she asks, and he doesn’t answer. She doesn’t expect him too.

~

She hides from everyone, lives in a cave at the edge of the city. The gods had called her the first woman, but that’s not true, she can see.

There are women. They smile and laugh have work roughened hands. She aches to join them, but she has the beauty of a goddess. They will know. If she joins them, they will know she is not of them, and it will set into motion whatever trap Zeus has planned.

She is not human, not in the same way, molded from clay by a god’s hands. But she is of humans, and not eager to bestow upon them the harm she’s destined to bring them. She bathes in streams where only nymphs reside, steals into the city in the cloak of night and pilfers from the baker’s trash.

“When they said they sent my brother a wife,” a low, amused voice says too close behind her one night, “I had not expected a begger.”

She whirls around, hard bread clenched tight in front of her, an incredibly inefficient shield. Her breath catches in her throat when she sees him, dark and tall and eyes like the night sky. He looks like Hermes. Like her. “Who are you?” she demands. They’re in an alley corner, and of her gifts flight is not among them. She’ll have to fight him to get away.

She’s not afraid of him. Maybe another mortal would be, cornered in the middle of the night by a man she doesn’t know. But she’s no normal mortal woman, and besides – he has something comforting about him, like the hearthfire attended by Hestia. Something warm.

“I am Prometheus,” says the man, and no wonder he reminds her of fire. “What do they call you?”

“You are meant to be in the deepest pits of Hades’s realm,” she snaps, and shifts her grip on the stale bread so that she can throw it at him. He’s the whole reason she’s here to begin with, him and his thievery.

He shrugs and walks closer to her, watching her like one would watch a wild animal. Good. Here, in this dark alley where no one would find a cooling body until morning, it is he that should be afraid. “Gods forget,” he says, “and Hades had grown cold in his place beneath the earth.”

She pauses, considers. “You stole fire for Hades?”

“No,” he corrects, “I stole fire for the people. But Hades benefited as well. Enough that he was willing to forget the terms of my punishment.”

“What do you want?” she asks for the second time. “Why are you here?”

He stops, too close to her, “The question is why are you here?”

She steps into his space now, following him as he backs away from her, “I am here because of you, fire-stealer, because gods may forget but they do not forgive, and I am the punishment they have unleashed upon the world.”

“What a punishment you are,” he says, looking at her lips, and she forgets to hate him only long enough to kiss him.

~

Hermes watches her, watches them. He doesn’t know Zeus’s plan, if this is part of it or not, but he watches her, and he worries. He thinks it is, he can see Aphrodite’s magic clinging to Pandora, but he doesn’t know why.

He would go to his mother, but she’s always difficult to find, Gaea preferring to live in streams and rivers rather than face the man she bore a son for. But his mother’s father, on the other hand, is always in the same place.

“Grandfather,” Hermes greets, touching lightly down onto the earth, “How are you?”

“How am I always, boy?” Atlas grunts out, legs and arms straining as he holds up the sky above the earth. “Tired.”

Hermes lips quirk up the corners. Some days, he thinks he’s more Atlas’s grandson than he’s Zeus’s son. “I need some advice, Grandfather.”

Atlas raises an eyebrow, “I’m listening.”

So Hermes tells him everything, from beginning to end, because he can’t figure out what his father’s plan is, but Atlas might. He’s known the man for longer, at least.

Atlas nods, slow, and says, “A bride of gods, a gifted child. I can think of only one reason to create such a child.” Hermes waits. Atlas sighs and says, “There is a jar, within Olympus, that becomes sealed when it leaves the realm of the gods. After that, only a being neither mortal nor celestial may open it.”

“What are they planning to put inside?” Hermes demands, heart spiking. What are they planning to unleash upon the unsuspecting earth?

His grandfather smirks, “It doesn’t matter. What matters is this – what are you going to put inside?”

What are your HCs if someone were to find Victor and Yuuri's very raunchy homemade sex tape? Would they be able to look at Yuuri Katsuki the same way again

It takes Yuuri a moment to reconcile the number of alert bubbles on his lock screen with a reason to panic, but when he unlocks his phone and spies the little red bubble with "529″ above the messages icon, a cold hand has gripped him by the diaphragm and begun squeezing a frigid reality into his chest.

With shaking hands, he opens his missed calls—658, what the hell—and skips right to the voice mails that have stuffed his inbox completely full. Beside him, Victor mumbles something about grass into his pillow.

Everybody he’s seemingly ever met has tried to reach him at some point during the night, and their messages are all variations of the same theme.

Sometimes I get annoyed how everyone says like oh Lena’s so Extra and Dramatic, especially in conjunction with how she was Lillian. Because I think everyone forgot one very key detail in conjunction with Lillian’s arrest:

Veronica Sinclair walked free.

Wait—you may be asking but what does that have to do with Lillian

This isn’t even a plot hole, and anyone who’s seen any of my posts would know this season I have problems with the writers but the fact that a few episodes before they make it a point to release Veronica Sinclair because she had connections and the evidence wasn’t irrefutably there is something that the audience should infer would easily be the same case with Lillian.

The point is, even with evidence, Roulette was still able to completely get away with what she did—sure the audience knows and the DEO know that she’s guilty, but that is not irrefutable evidence needed when going after someone with that much power

Lena had to catch her mother in the act for her to be arrested, needed proof beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is guilty. Guess what, telling the police oh, my mother wants this isotope so that she can kill off every alien in National City using a disease that was engineered by Kryptonians that she stole from a frozen fortress in Antarctica and oh what proof do I have? Well, Supergirl said so and she told me that she loved me. I have no clue how she’s doing this, or where the disease might be, or how exactly she would be able to get every single alien at once. Maybe that’d be enough to possibly evacuate some of the aliens that are out, but guys.

That is not how the criminal justice system works, especially for someone from a powerful, wealthy family with connections.

Hypotheticals aren’t nearly as bad, legal wise, as an actual act, because the argument could always be “oh, I changed my mind. I wasn’t actually going to do it.” Lena found out exactly the distribution method of the disease, the precise location, and that Lillian’s actions would have killed all the aliens in National City if not for Lena’s interference, and made sure that there were multiple eyewitnesses.

Prosecuting Lillian Luthor would be difficult enough—something like this is what prosecutors would dream about getting, if they had to pursue a case like this bc lmao they have a demonstration of intent, the bazooka, multiple eye witnesses, including Supergirl and the woman’s own daughter. Like. The police came in immediately too, so for all we know Lena was wearing a wire or a camera as well.

The idea of the US criminal court is that there is not a shadow of a doubt that the person is guilty, and not even the probably very expensive lawyer that Lillian hired can get her out of this situation. Whoever the prosecutor is for this case probably thanked whatever god exists that Lena Luthor was this thorough because they damn well know that if they nail this case this could make their entire career, and if they don’t it will be all on them because the evidence is all there.

And if Lena just destroyed the isotope—well, what makes you think that Lillian wouldn’t just find the scientist who originally made it, and bribe or threaten them, or find a new one who could make it.

Lillian already sent in Hank Henshaw to L Corp to get it, and we saw him throw something so heavy that it would have killed Lena. A) If she’s willing to do this to her own daughter, what would she be willing to do to a stranger?

And B) Lena believed Kara it seems almost immediately after she learned that it was Lillian who sent Henshaw there. What do you think Lillian would have done as retaliation for destroying the isotope? This is a woman who clearly does not love her daughter, which Lena knows. God, who knows how exactly the woman who definitely had a big hand in making Lex Luthor someone who went from welcoming Lena to open arms to trying multiple times to have his baby sister assassinated.

That’s not being “over dramatic.” That’s being someone who probably has a very accurate idea of what exactly it’s going to take to a) prevent something similar from happening if she decides not to interfere b) put Lillian away for good and c) making sure she will survive what’s next to come.

Someone who is dramatic is someone who over-exaggerates a situation, but Lena has at this point multiple family members try to kill her, was made to feel like a complete outsider and a burden and that she was unworthy of love and who knows what else by this woman.

This isn’t Lena being Dramatic. This is someone who has dealt with Lillian Luthor almost the entirety of her life, this is someone who would most likely have the absolute most accurate assessment of what exactly needs to be done to take down Lillian once and for all. This is exactly what Lena needs to do to survive.

Who knows how many times growing up, especially at the beginning, she told someone about how Lillian was treating her, only for them to maybe “disappear,” or for Lillian to find out and make the situation even more horrible, or worse: they didn’t believe her.

It wasn’t supposed to go like this.

The thing about being somewhat of a “celebrity” is that everyone wants a piece of you. And being in the spotlight comes with the expectation that you owe your fans something in return for their support. Kent loves social media. He loves Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, all of it. Which makes it a little easier to fill that expectation, to give his fans something more than just goals and wins. It certainly makes it easier for him than it is for guys like Jack, who seem to break out in hives just thinking about social media.

Kent’s 1.4 million followers on Twitter, 1.2 million followers on Instagram (2.5 million when you combine his account with Kit’s) and over 800K followers on Snapchat make him one of the most followed athletes in the world. He’s by far the most followed hockey player, with more followers than some of the NHL teams themselves. He keeps all three running pretty well. Mainly because he enjoys it, he loves sharing his life with his fans.

The Moral High Ground: Arrow 5x12 Review (Bratva)

RUSSIA!!!! Just so we’re clear, whenever I write this I’m singing it in my very best  Tevye “TRADITION!” voice. If you don’t understand that reference go rent Fiddler on the Roof right now.

The return to Russia means a refocus on Original Team Arrow. The first trip to Russia, in 2x06, was really the solidification of Original Team Arrow, so it was vitally important that Arrow not miss the opportunity to revisit the bonds the show is built on. They didn’t miss the opportunity. In fact, they delivered a fantastic  episode with “Bratva” that examines the dynamics of Original Team Arrow.

And yes… there will be a snark filled gif response to that final scene.

Patience my loves. Let’s dig in…

“Remember Me”vs. “Witness Me”

I was thinking about Furiosa’s last (and only) words to Immortan Joe: “Remember me.”

That line’s always kind of puzzled me. Is it a challenge? A rhetorical question? A “fuck you”? A reckoning?  All of the above? I mean, it’s no doubt a pretty badass thing to growl at the tyrant who abducted and enslaved you right before you tear his face off, but I started thinking about its similarities to another of Fury Road’s Arc Words: “Witness me.”

When you’re a War Boy, your body is an expendable, broken-down machine, your torturous half-life spent waiting for the ultimate self-sacrificing high; the best you can hope for is a spectacular death, for that death to be “witnessed.” The worst thing you can hear is the scoff of “mediocre”: your life, you thought, was building to this moment; you cast yourself on the pyre of blood and chrome with hopes of eternal glory; you gave up everything, and it wasn’t enough. Your half-life (and afterlife) hinges on the moment of your death, and how well it served your god-king.

Now, let’s look at the Vuvalini’s death-rite. You know the one.

In contrast to the War Boy’s bombastic cry of “Witness!”, this action is quiet, a silent promise to remember, to write the names of the lost on one’s heart. This is not a weakness- the Vuvalini are nothing if not resourceful and resilient, despite the tragedies that have befallen their once-prosperous clan.

But those they lost are never forgotten- who they were is more important than how they died. Thematically, this healthy and compassionate culture of remembrance contrasts with Max and his frequent visions of “those I could not protect.”

Memory is a theme that is especially present in Fury Road, and yet it’s the aspect of the film’s thematic gamut that I see least discussed. Mad Max as a whole takes place in a sort of limbic time warp. How long ago were these disasters? The oil shortages, the flying nukes, the water wars? Fury Road might take place two decades or two centuries after this cataclysm. Even people who grew to adulthood in the old world, like Max and the Vuvalini are implied to, have foggy, off-kilter memories of those times (”Everyone had a show…”), that seem more like secondhand myths than actual recollection. The old world has passed into legend and superstition even to those who lived in it.

The remnants and parphenalia of the pre-apocalypse and their use in the post- is a major cornerstone of Mad Max’s aesthetic, and even in this, there is a clear thematic distinction between how these trappings manifest between groups. The Buzzards, for instance, seemingly lacking even the demented ingenuity of Immortan Joe’s rev-heads, merely scavenge the past, cannibalizing it into a shape that is feral, ungainly, and myopic.

Immortan Joe’s empire is a blood-soaked engine whose organic components are reduced to their function- whatever it is that they can do or give to benefit Joe, whether it be milk, blood, or children. It’s no wonder the War Boys’ fetishize and worship of technology. They regard their own diseased, “half-life” bodies as inferior to the vehicles they’re obsessed with- strong and solid and never-tiring.  Indeed their doctor is even called “the Organic Mechanic” and they bear circuit-like engine-tattoos and ceremonial chrome mouth-spray-paint to imitate the mighty machines they worship and envy.

The accoutrements of the past are used as symbols of power, or else hoarded away, as in the vault-like chamber where Joe keep his wives and other “treasures.”

The Vuvalini (and to a wider extent, the women of Fury Road), are the keepers of memory and hope. Their way is not fetishization, but preservation. From the bag of seeds to their extensive clan and familial history, the Many Mothers have a rich and vital store of knowledge and culture.  And, of course, lets not forget Ms. Giddy, the History Woman, literally the physical embodiment of knowledge, her body a living record.

So back to Furiosa, who herself has gone on a journey from being trapped in the depths of the War Boy culture to reconnecting with her past and, like Max, relearning how to connect with people, to move beyond the instincts of survival. In the moment of her confrontation with Joe astride his Gigahorse (incidentally the first, last, and only time in the entire film that Joe comes truly face-to-face with either of our protagonists), Furiosa sums up her entire journey, not just in the film, but over the course of her entire life, in those two words, before literally, figuratively, and gruesomely ripping the mask off the false god and spelling an end to his horrific ideology. From this perspective, “Remember me” is a powerful statement, the mantra of the society that Furiosa, the Vuvalini, and the no-longer-Wives will build, where people are more than their “usefulness”; where the past has lessons to teach, not just trappings of power to grant; where those you’ve lost do not become spectres, but immortalized in memory.

In the fires of armageddon, one ideology says that you are infinitesimal, expendable, that the world will not miss you, is not capable of missing you. The other promises that there is more to you than your base instincts of survival or your “function” in a harsh and violent world; that your name will be remembered; that those who survive you will not forget.

Gasoline [unfinished WIP, KHR]

Going through my folders and posting what isn’t going to be finished or is dropped, so I can get it out for good and focus on what I do want to write.

Warnings for: born-a-female-Tsuna, mentions of attempted marital rape, forced marriages, drug-induced death and general mafia behavior.

Summary: Prior to marrying Iemitsu, Nana was a very accomplished black widow. Tsuna shouldn’t have to follow in her footsteps like this, but Vongola has left her no choice in the matter. So she will have the mafia fear her as she once feared them, and she will survive.

———–

Prior to marrying Iemitsu, Nana Sawada went under a different name, and was a very accomplished black widow. She slipped poison in drinks and drugs where nobody would think to look, put needle marks in skin and occasionally knives in the backs of men who treated her like an object rather than a person.

Tsuna never wanted to learn such lessons. She wanted her marriage, when it finally did happen, to be the once-in-a-lifetime event her mother gushed about having with Iemitsu. After the mafia came and ruined her life, she still clung to feeble hopes that maybe she could still get that.

But it isn’t to be.

Timoteo intends to make a statement, one way or another. Unfortunately, even if a woman should rule as Decima, she must still have a husband. And Xanxus isn’t about to touch the woman that froze him once upon a time. So he’s reached out beyond Vongola to allied families, and they’ve sent their best to him. And now he’s made a choice, and once again he’s forcing it on her.

Tsuna can lie to everyone but herself; she’s afraid. Terrified, in fact. The thought of a stranger touching her makes her want to vomit. The thought of this man breathing in her general vicinity makes her want to vomit, actually. She shakes and quivers and hides beneath her bedcovers, and for once, Reborn says nothing. He doesn’t scold her. He slides a mug of hot chocolate topped with enough whipped cream to give her diabetes her way, wordlessly tipping his hat down as he leaves the room. It doesn’t take someone of Reborn’s calibre to know the man doesn’t like this any more than she does. But he’s her tutor, not her father (no matter how much she wishes otherwise some days), and so he can only stand back and watch this trainwreck.

Maybe that’s why she confides in her mother. Why when everyone is gone, Tsuna goes downstairs, starts to speak, and then bursts into tears. Everything comes rushing out, every lie about the mafia she’s ever told, and she begs her mother’s forgiveness for the lies, and Nana gives it readily, wrapping arms around her and letting her cry into a warm shoulder. The tears eventually leave, and Nana sits her down, gets her a glass of cold water, and begins to tell her a story.

It is not a nice story.

But it teaches Tsuna what she needs to know to survive. Because Nana was once a prominent black widow that nobody could ever track down. Her husbands died of natural causes - all the autopsy reports say so - and while people had their suspicions, there was no evidence for them to pin her with. And after a time, she’d learned how to disguise herself, going from one husband to the next.

Now she cups Tsuna’s small hands in her own, and drops the mask she uses around everyone. “Tsunako, do you want to learn how?”

Tsuna can’t say yes fast enough.

———–

Her first husband dies to poison.

It’s tradition, her mother insists, when she shows Tsunako had to make a clear, tasteless, odorless toxin that’s practically untraceable once its inside the system. It’s homegrown, and Nana is a perfectionist at teaching it. She has Tsuna make batch after batch after batch until eventually she gets everything perfect. And then she gets a dropper and begins to administer one drop to Tsunako a day.

One drop doesn’t kill her. It makes her feel like shit, but she muscles through it, because a true poison user is protected against whatever they brew. Bianchi is the same way - she can eat whatever she makes and the poison won’t kill her or even make her queasy. Nana is immune to whatever toxins she injects into the veins of others, and eventually Tsuna will be too. They have time - the wedding isn’t due for a while, and nobody is going to force her and her husband together until then.

Tsuna sees Reborn watching them, once, but he vanishes too quickly for her to ask him if he’s going to tell anyone what she’s doing. She doesn’t ask afterward, because there’s a look in his eyes that’s… proud. It makes her feel warm, and when he drills her on her lessons later on, she doesn’t complain, driven by her twin desires to survive what’s coming, and make the man that has become her father in so many ways proud.

Spring passes into summer, and the wedding is held. People flock from all over to see it, and Tsuna is dressed to the nines and sent out at the alter. Her husband is a tall, weedy-looking young man who looks far too smug. She hates him at once, and his oily touch doesn’t remedy that.

The poison is not in his drink, but in her lipstick, and when they kiss (him pressing far too close, too hard, disgusting) she feels a sense of predatory satisfaction. The next morning she wakes up and screams, which brings the bodyguard outside the door running. She plays the part of the horrified wife, discovering her husband’s cold, lifeless body in bed. They rush the body away, and bring her to Reborn to keep her safe while they go question guests and comb through the drinks menu.

Reborn eyes her fingernails, but his eyes flicker upwards when she taps her lip in pretend thought. There’s a ghost of a smile across his face, but it fades once the door opens and Timoteo enters, looking both furious and terrified. He questions her if she feels ill, or if anything felt off at the wedding. She answers no to both, wringing her hands and playing up the ‘Dame-Tsuna’ act to full effect. It works, and the old man leaves.

“You’ve been hanging around Bianchi too much,” Reborn murmurs, not moving his lips, and Tsuna has to bite her own to hold back her return of its not Bianchi I’ve been spending so much time with lately, but you already know that.

————–

The death is passed off as a heart attack a week later when no results come up showing foul play. Tsuna doesn’t even get to play the widow in mourning before Timoteo’s given her another husband, this time in the form of a 40 something lech that’s like every old man out of a hentai. The old man gropes her and laughs too loudly and tries to sneak a hand up her dress to cop a feel, but Tsuna smacks his hand away and smiles the same smile her mother does at home even as her stomach rolls and her anger burns a hole through her heart.

He tries to take her no less than four separate time against various walls, each time growing more and more impatient and annoyed when Tsuna darts away. The poison is in her nails this time, and when he finally grabs her too hard she scratches him ‘on accident’ and then demands he leave her alone, she doesn’t want to be touched. She closes herself off in her room and locks the door. Her new husband pounds on it and snarls demands, but she puts her headphones on and ignores him until eventually he gives up and goes away.

This poison is far more slow-acting, and it doesn’t strike until early the next morning during breakfast. Bianchi and Reborn have taken her out to a nearby cafe for breakfast, citing ‘comfort food in these troubling times and a female shoulder to cry on’. In reality Bianchi wants to know her methods and trade tips, and Reborn pays for a tiny cake and congratulates her on finding sneaky solutions to her problems.

“I thought you’d go running off and tell Timoteo,” she confesses to her tutor. Reborn gives her a look.

“I’ve been around this business long enough to know how these things go, Tsuna. Trust me, I don’t judge you one iota for what you’re doing. But you should probably change your methods here shortly.”

She nods, having already planned to use a needle on whoever the unfortunate third soul is. They finish breakfast and head home, laughing and talking about whatever strikes their fancy, and when they arrive home its to a Timoteo that looks far older than before. “Grandfather? What’s wrong?”

He gives her a pitying look. “There’s… there’s been another death, my dear.”

She drops to her knees in shock, Bianchi by her side instantly, hooking an arm around her shoulders and murmuring comforting words as she ‘helps’ Tsunako up. Reborn’s face is shadowed, but Tsuna can see the sparkle in his eyes from her position. “What happened?” she asks in what she hopes is the right tone of voice.

Later, Reborn toasts her in the privacy of the bedroom, and Bianchi congratulates her on another job well done. This death is passed off as a choking accident, as apparently the man had been shoving as much food in his gullet as possible when the poison had kicked in. Nobody had managed to get to him in time to prevent the ‘choking’, which just made the victory all the easier.

PLEASE GET STARTED I NEED BIG BROTHER ADAM LOVING HIS BABY BROTHER CHIP

Clears throat. SCARMON.

  • You figure out within a week or so of the Curse being broken that Adam is exceptional with Chip. It warms your heart seeing him interact with him and take care of him. There’s something about Adam with Chip that makes you wonder if he hasn’t self-dubbed himself as his older brother.
  • Absolutely sneaks snacks and goodies for Chip even after Mrs. Potts said no. It’s probably the cutest thing ever. The two of them walking down the hallway, towards the kitchen and whenever they hear someone coming, they’ll hide behind the curtains. Once in the kitchen though, Prince Adam will give Chip anything his heart desires. Even sweets. Adam’s gotten spoken to a couple of times because of this by Mrs. Potts personally, but he’ll always look down at Chip who’s behind her and give him a small wink. An assurance that even though he’s getting told off, he plans on continuing the devious behavior.
  • Convinces Mrs. Potts to let Chip stay up past his bedtime. All. The Time.
    • It’s usually Chip who plays this out though, giving his mother puppy dog eyes and saying, “Adam’s almost done with the story, one more hour please?”
And with Chip being her soft spot, she gives Adam a glance and agrees. One more hour.
  • Prince Adam has never personally made a cup of tea for himself, so he spent an evening with Chip who was all too willing to show him how to make the perfect cup. They probably ended up making close to one hundred cups, to which the only solution was a giant tea party with everyone in the castle.
    • Adam’s pretty impressed with himself to be honest. He’s beaming with pride, ruffles Chips hair and explains to you, “I’d have probably burned the water if it wasn’t for him.”
  • Piggy-back rides through the Garden during summertime. Prince Adam acting like he’s going to throw Chip into the pond. It’s just a joke, and though Chip knows that, he plays along and yells, “Please don’t do it!”
  • No doubt, Prince Adam is in the process of teaching Chip to read. Probably simple folklore from the area, but Chip has also shown interest in History and ironically, Romance.
    • Prince Adam lets you take care of the Romance genre though, as it’s still a cliche to him even though the Curse he was previously under was broken by true love. You always joke around and say, “he can’t read romances even though his life is basically one big romance novel.” To which Prince Adam pretends to gag, before giving you the sweetest smile. What you said was true, and he knows it and really, he wouldn’t change it.
      • If the two of you ever kiss in front of Chip, you’d never hear the end of it. “Why would you do that right here?” “EW” “Can you not? Please?”
  • Mrs. Potts has absolutely noticed the unique bond between her son and Prince Adam. She brings it up one evening before bedtime. Adam smiles at her and says, “I never got these sorts of things when I was a child. You knew my father, you knew love and tenderness were out of the question.”
She grins reassuringly at him, pressing her hand to his cheek. It reminds him of his mother’s affection. The last time he ever saw her, the love inside of her heart and the love she held for her son.
Mrs. Potts says, “Well, I can assure you that you’ve made his life much better, dearie. He’s always wanted a big brother.”
  • Prince Adam is the way he is with Chip post-curse, because he never got the chance to be a child. He knows what it’s like to have your childhood taken away in the worst way, and while the Curse was still active, Adam promised himself that if it was ever broken, he’d give Chip the childhood he deserved. With a mother and father, family and friends. No child deserves to be alone.
    • “My friends,” He started softly, “I don’t ever think I had friends my own age or of my own interest. I made friends with the staff of the Castle. Cogsworth, Lumière…” Adam paused and tucked back some of his strawberry blond hair, “I do know that there are a lot of children without that opportunity, some without a family as well… And I want to help them.”

He’s on the verge of sobbing, a few tear drops having rolled down his cheeks onto his hands. You smile tenderly at him, cupping his cheek lovingly and kiss his right cheek. It was moments like this that made it hard to know that Prince Adam was once so heartless. “It’s alright, love. I’ll be with you in whatever it is you want to do.”
      • Though he still taxes the villagers(Not heavily anymore), whatever money he receives goes out to help children that need it. Whether they need a family, food, education. Prince Adam wants to help. After all, there is more to life than just his wants.
  • Nearing the fisrt year of the two of you together, you start to get heavy baby fever. You see and take note of how Prince Adam is with Chip and just adds to your want to start your own family.

It’s late at night and the two of you are getting ready for bed. Prince Adam is watching from bed already as you sit at the vanity, brushing back your hair. You glance into the mirror back at him, smiling before saying to him, “When I first met you, I never imagined you’d be amazing with children.”
His eyebrows raise in slight amusement. “Well, I was a Beast when you first met me. I imagine children were out of the question at that time.”

You laughed in agreement, sitting on your side of the bed. Your back to him, you rubbed your hands together, took a deep breath in and whispered gently, “Well, I see you now with Chip. You’re so wonderful with him, it’s so natural and so loving. I just wonder…”

He’s curious as to what you’re thinking. Sitting up slightly, he reaches out, brushes his cool fingertips along your back and tells you, “You can ask and tell me anything, (Name). No need to be hesitant.”

“If you’ve ever thought about having children with me.” You said flat out, your cheeks on fire.

“Of course I’ve thought about it.” Adam chuckled softly, perhaps, a bit nervously at what you were implying. “I’ve seen you with Chip as well. You’ve got a natural inclination to be.. tender and understanding with him…”

Swallowing, he nodded to his own words, “My mother was like that…” Scooting towards you, he sits down and cups your cheek in his hand. Turning your head so you could look at him, he places the lightest kiss possible against your lips and murmurs against them, “It’s okay to look at me.”

Gazing up, you catch eyes with him. A bit cross eyed because of the close proximity of your faces. Lifting your legs up, he rests them on his lap and leans forward to hive you another warm kiss. “Whenever you want, we can try…” Adam says gently, “I want children with you, (Name).”

Hold My Veil

A very fast, un-betaed, semi-crack fic about the likely turn of events during the CS wedding. Based on this post. @high-seas-swan, @optomisticgirl, @thegladelf

On her 28th birthday Emma Swan made a wish on the solitary candle of a small cupcake and now she is standing in front of a white three-tiered cake surrounded by her family and friends. She blinks back the tears that threaten to ruin all of Goldilock’s hard work.

“Alright there, love?” Killian whispers in her ear.

She turns to him and smiles. “Yeah. I just never dreamed–“

“I know.” The hand around her waist gives a gentle squeeze and she leans into him. He did know and that was the miracle of it all that she had found someone who could understand what it was to be lost, alone, and broken, someone who accepted all parts of her, someone who–

A sudden crash interrupts her thoughts and every head turns toward the sound.

“Seriously?” Emma groans as the Black Fairy strides into the room. They had expected her or Gideon to show up, had thrown up protection spells and put out fairies on the perimeter. She hadn’t crashed the actual ceremony but it obviously hadn’t been enough to keep her away forever. The guests watch the fairy with wide eyes as she stalks toward Emma and Killian.

“What a happy occasion, Savior. I do hope I’m not interrupting anything important?”

“Actually you are. Maybe you can come back later? Perhaps after my honeymoon?”

Killian chuckles beside her and Emma stands a little bit taller.

The Black Fairy gives a mock pout. “Oh. I’m sorry but that just doesn’t work for me. You see I am rather anxious to get this over with and begin my happy ending.”

Emma knows she should be scared but the strongest emotion she feels is annoyance. Because she just wanted one day, her wedding day, to be free of monsters and drama and life or death situations. Out of the corner of her eye she can see Regina and Zelena moving into position and her parents approaching behind the Black Fairy. with sword and bow in hand. Somewhere she knows Elsa is also ready and that half her guests are heroes in their own right. Killian is tense beside her, his hand on his sword, waiting for her cue. She smiles. She has her whole family behind her.

“Fine,” she says and reaches up to pull the veil from her hair, it was some kind of magic spider lace that her mother’s, mother’s, mother, had worn and she wasn’t about to let it tear. She turns to her husband. “Killian, hold my veil?”

He takes it with a wide smile and an intense look in his eyes that tells her he trusts her completely, that he would be with her no matter what.

“As you wish.”

And it’s not really the time or place but she can’t help smiling and pulling him in for an intense kiss. A kiss that makes her even more determined to get to their honeymoon. She sighs as they break apart and then turns back to the gate crasher.

“All right, Voldemort let’s get this over with it.”

Everything happens at once.

Regina, Zelena, Elsa, Maleficent, and Emma all shoot their magic, light filling the room as it streaks toward their target who is already disappearing in a puff of smoke. Half the guests run for cover and the other half pull out swords, knifes and guns. Emma hears Killian calling out orders. Then there is a rush of sound and the room is filled with the Black Fairies minions. Everyone begins to fight and it’s complete chaos. Emma conjures a sword to her hand and dives in.

She is making her way toward her parents, slashing at the magical creatures and occasionally using a burst of magic to blow them away. At some point her dress gets ripped, which really pisses her off.

She keeps an eye on Killian who, with Elsa’s help, is clearing a path to an exit and trying to herd those who are unable to fight. She loses sight of him when something that looks like a small ogre attacks her dad and it takes her, Regina, and her mom to help kill it.

They barely have time to shoot each other satisfied smiles before the roof of the building shudders and then disappears as it is ripped off by a large, green dragon.

“Oh dammit–“ Emma starts.

“Mal? I a little help?” Regina calls.

“On it.” Maleficent returns as her body begins to stretch and grow.

The dragon shoots a molten stream of fire that Emma just watches as it hurls toward her, her brain not quite comprehending the danger.

“Emma!” She hears Killian scream and then the fire is met by ice.

“Stay away from my friend.” Elsa yells as her magic erupts from her hands. Steam hisses in the air and fills the room. Emma grins and pushes the wet tendrils of hair from her face. As the roars of two dragons sound overhead she turns back to the battle around her. Killian is suddenly there beside her. His suit jacket is gone and his hair and white shirt are wet and clinging to him, a streak of green blood runs down his arm from whatever creature or creatures he had killed. He is grinning and she rolls her eyes at him. He brushes a lock of her hair from her shoulder with his hook.

“Hello beautiful.”

She knows she looks as bad as him with her hair a mess and her wet, stained, and ripped dress but the way he is looking at her with awe and wonder she feels more beautiful than when she walked down the aisle not two hours ago.

“I love you,” she says.

He only has time to smile in response before they both turn to meet the next threat. And Emma knows that after this fight there will be another, that the Black Fairy is waiting for her but with her husband and her family and friends beside her she knows she will win.

I quit writing Homestuck meta a long time ago, but I guess the pre-4/13 fervor is infectious, because this popped into my head and wouldn’t go away. So here’s some musings on Homestuck, the ending, and its portrayal (or rather, erasure) of character identity and agency.

Let’s rewind back several years and a few subsubacts, to the meteor and battleship crews’ not so triumphant arrival in the combined session. Two of the kids’ number have been mind-controlled and forced to work for the Empress. Two have been thrown in prison. One has been banished to the outer reaches of space. The rest have been divvied up and placed on various Lands, given different tasks to be completed for the Empress. Even in beating SBURB and winning the game they have no escape, because she intends to rule the new universe they create… until it spawns Lord English and is destroyed.

Things look bleak. And things look even bleaker when Game Over rolls around, and most of the cast gets exterminated. But wait! John Egbert, Heir of Breath and leader of the Beta session, has gotten his hands on a miraculous artifact supposedly useful as a weapon against Lord English. He now has the ability to travel throughout time and space and to change things that usually cannot be changed. While his friends get wiped out, he fights the “tyrannous author” figure who has been telling their story wrong and wins. Surely with his newfound abilities, he will set things right and lead them to freedom.

Except.  Not really.

Oh sure, John “saves the day”. He uses his retcon abilities to create a new timeline where everyone lives and wins the game. But is it a victory? And did everyone really live?

I’m going to argue that the ending of Homestuck is a tragedy where characters’ identities are frequently ignored or overwritten in order to serve the utilitarian aims of the narrative (and Skaia). I do not make this argument believing Hussie intended it. I think the dip in quality and coherency at the end of Homestuck was the product of an author who was tired of his project, had lost track of a bunch of plot points and characters, and just wanted to be finished. But I do think its treatment of identity is drastically different from the rest of the work and sends some disturbing messages about how “happy” that ending really is.
