The clattering sounds of typing, clicking and pages flipping lull you into a state of lethargy as your eyes flutter half-shut in your cubicle. Having graduated as an arts major two years ago, you’d never imagine being holed up with a mundane 9-5 office job that had almost nothing to do with your major. But bills needed to be paid and rent had to come from somewhere, so you find yourself trudging to work soulessly every morning, day in day out.

“Hey, are you almost done with those files I gave you this morning?” The voice of your co-worker Mingyu in the next cubicle jolts you into awareness immediately.

Jake Peralta: Stepdad!AU

So this was going to be an actual fic, but, alas, any sort of narrative wouldn’t come, so instead allow me to offer a series of (not at all canon-timeline compliant) headcanons about Amy Santiago’s tiny daughter taking Jake in as part of the family:

  • When Amy starts at the Nine-Nine, she is Very Adamant that Jake will never meet Maya, largely because a) He’s the worst, and b) Maya doesn’t need to see her mother curse out a fellow employee, but mostly c) He’s The Worst.
  • Except she only lasts twelve days, at which point Captain McGinley calls her in on her day off because he’s finally realized that his new detective has started and he wants to meet her, even though they have met four (4) times and he’s assigned two cases to her and Jake
    • It’s supposed to be a short meeting and she promises a very teary-eyed Maya that she’ll be real quick, but she needs to go in without Maya because McGinley looks like he might yell for some reason, Amy can just tell, and Sarge isn’t here and Amy barely knows anyone else and Jake offers, basically
    • Maya is just v. v. teary when Amy blows her a quick kiss before entering McGinley’s office
    • The meeting lasts exactly forty-seven minutes
    • Amy expects A Disaster when she gets out, or at the very least a very stressed-out Jake trying to pass her daughter off on someone else
    • But instead Maya is sitting in Jake’s lap with two of his superhero figurines gripped between her sweaty little hands, patiently telling a story while Jake writes on a piece of paper next to her
    • “And then there’s a dragon,” Maya says breathlessly, and Jake nods along patiently
    • “Fire-breathing or bearded?” he offers, and Maya really considers it for a moment before deciding on bearded. “Got it, I’ve jotted that down.”
    • “I thought no one was allowed to touch your dolls?” Amy asks when she gets to them, and she’s a little stressed out about this whole situation because Jake is suddenly, like, a kind person? Who’s been watching her daughter for forty-seven minutes and counting?
    • “Uh, obviously this is Red Metal Man and Mr. Star, okay.”
    • It’s not. It’s Iron Man and Captain America, and Amy can tell because she’s not totally out of the loop of the cultural zeitgeit, okay, and she sometimes pays attention to movie posters and has very definitely seen at least two of the superhero movies
    • “Plus I believe I said no Santiagos, and that was back before I knew there was a cool Santiago in the clan.”
    • Maya, meanwhile, has grabbed a pen off of Jake’s desk and is now leaning precariously over said desk and drawing on some of the large blank spaces Jake had left on the paper
    • And Amy realizes that Jake was writing down Maya’s story but made sure there was room so she could draw
    • Jake grins at her sheepishly, braces Maya with one hand on her back to make sure she doesn’t slip, and says, “It’s her vision, and she’s, like, a really good storyteller.”
    • Amy swoons, but in a low-key, subtle way. Probably.
    • Anyway, but Jake is also The Worst, so it doesn’t matter

Hi! do you have any tips on anatomy? i struggle so much at it. your art is so cute btw!!!

hi anon!! thank u so much!! im gonna try my best to offer some tips to u!!!! im still learning with anatomy as well (& im not so good with tutorials…) so bare with me:

SIMPLIFY AND BREAK DOWN EVERYTHING IS MY #1 PIECE OF ADVICE. for example lets start small with a hand. instead of looking at a reference or ur own hand and trying to perfectly capture every detail, look at the basic shape!! its p much a square for ur palm, 4 sticks of varying sizes, and as i have described here the little pouring part of a teapot (idk what its called) for a thumb.

u can apply this anywhere!!! just like the hand, other parts of the body like legs and arms have basic shapes too!! ive seen many artists explain it this way so i picked it up as well, but they have this rhythm where one side is curved and the other is straight (its more subtle in realistic art, but if ur going for cartoony u can exaggerate this too). depending on the drawing or sometimes if my drawing is small i’ll just make straight rectangles for arms or legs but rly it will make things more interesting and technically correct if u show these variations in the appendage shapes.

really the best thing in art ever for me is to simplify simplify simplify, im not great @ anatomy but learning to break things down and represent them in the most minimalistic ways has rly helped me a lot and made my anatomy look better too. to be honest i have not done figure drawings in ages and i rarely use real life references when drawing (IM NOT ADVOCATING FOR DOING SO, I KNOW IT HELPS MANY PEOPLE A LOT BUT I JUST CANT EVER GET INTO IT). whenever i use real life reference, i feel like my art becomes stiff since i tend to replicate the image too closely thus making a cartoony style have the proportion and anatomy of a real person which doesnt really fit the style.. i prefer to study the work of other artists especially animators since they have a great grasp on appealing simplification and stylized anatomy (bc u know its hard to have an animated show thats super detailed). craig mccracken and genndy tartakovsky both have really cool simplistic cartoon styles so i draw a lot of inspiration from their art (and i hope to use varying shapes and exaggerate my anatomy more like theirs as well).

(one little other important thing i didnt rly mention but ill keep it short since everyone says this. of course u have to practice too. i know it sucks to hear “just keep doing it” from everyone when ur frustrated with ur abilities and dont want to keep doing it, but continuing to draw bodies will boost ur abilities so much. u can look at art and read a million tutorials, but actually drawing will continuously build up ur muscle memory for drawing arms, legs, etc and after a while it comes naturally!!)

tldr practice & study not just from real life but look at how other artists break down and simplify shapes of the body. also remember art doesnt have to have flawless realistic anatomy to look good! there are so many incredible artists who bend the rules of anatomy whether its as a stylistic choice or to exaggerate emotion or perspective, etc.

Werid question but how do you get your traditional artwork to look so smooth but also sketchy? If that makes sense.

My main things are (this turned out to be a lot longer than I thought! Srry!)

Loose lines: draw with your whole arm if you can! (drawing anchored to your wrist can lead to Carpal tunnel syndrome.. and no one wants that)

Full lines: try to keep your lines fluid, fast and long (as opposed to short and scratchy lines that make one big line) look for YouTube videos on gesture drawing! Get things down quick and flesh them out later, usually the first thing we mark down will be the most accurate when doing gestures!

Sketch lightly: use heavy lines sparingly! They can really define a sketch but be sparing, there can be too much of a good thing. I always start sketches almost invisibly light to map out the bare bones of my drawings! Then because they’re so light, you don’t have to erase them if you don’t want to!

Shapes: shapes r your friends!! 🌸 use shapes to get the (figurative or literal) skeleton down!! Almost anything can be boiled down to basic shapes!

REFERENCE: IT! IS! OK! TO! REFERENCE! I can’t stress this enough, free reference photo databases are just a google away! Learn that anatomy fam! Even if you’re doing cartoons, it will be so much easier with the anatomical knowledge! Also, I have no problem with learning artists referencing my art when starting out with drawing.. 2 RULES TO REFERENCING PRE-EXISTING ART: 1) don’t claim it’s your art. 2) ask the artist if it’s cool first! Some aren’t okay with it and ya gotta respect it! ❤Also try to get off the crutch of referencing pre-existing art quickly! Referencing art helps you practice, but nothing beats referencing from real, organic life, because that’s where your style will come out.

Simplify: esp. pertaining to expressions, the more you complicate things, the harder it will be for it to read. It will get lost among the busyness. Look at the drawing as a whole as opposed to only paying attention for details. Don’t be concerned with making a masterpiece!! Sketchbooks should be messy!

Get back to basics: anatomy, colour theory and the elements of design!!! they help a whole heck of a lot!!! Never be satisfied with your knowledge of these basic things bc you learned them in like kindergarten,, okay????

A(cting)RT: you can convey a LOT if you have the mindset of telling a story with your sketch!

Cheap: don’t worry abt using fancy shmancy supplies! I get mine from the dollar store (sketchbook, erasers and mechanical pencils! Definitely get good paper if ur using copics or high quality markers but like I literally only sketch traditionally w pencil… ) I find I’m so scared to use expensive sketchbooks that I hardly draw in them and I hate everything I draw. I go through like 1 or more sketchbooks a month so… that would rack up quick if I was using like $20.00 sketchbooks instead of $2.00 ones.

Listen: Listen to music or podcasts or audio books or drawing tutorials if it helps!! It can sometimes even influence the mood of your drawing :0

Sketch often: every day if you can!! It’s a good habit if you want to get better!! And therapeutic!!!

Accept CONSTRUCTIVE criticism!!: It’s not an insult! It’s someone else’s view! Get critiqued often! And actually listen!! Know the difference between constructive and destructive!! Also join a community! Meet other artist! Collaborate! Art isn’t a competition! ❤

quick round!

Study art history: they’re famous for a reason!

Draw inspiration from everywhere!

When referencing, draw what you see, not what you know!

Think about drawing in 3D, more like it’s sculpting instead of drawing! Everything is made of flat plains and will cast shadows!!

If you’re up to it, challenge yourself! You’ll only get better if you step out of your comfort zone! Try to draw one new thing each sketching session!

Lastly

Don’t stress!: most important drawing tip! Drawing is supposed to be fun and therapeutic because it doesn’t have to be anything! All art is art and everyone who makes art is an artist, it’s not some exclusive club, we all start somewhere! This is your art journey! Enjoy the ride!

I know you just wanted to know about how I sketch but I couldn’t help myself!!! Sorry! Hope this helps! 🌸

“Really? I thought you liked surprises?” he fired back, walking casually to the front of the car, face mask open, holding his hands out to the side in mock surprise.

“Is the car the surprise?”

Hello! I'm new to digital art and I was just wondering if you had any tips? Your art style is just very nice to look at and it looks like you've had a lot of practice. I don't know where to really start I suppose. Thank you for any help you can give! :)

i uhh. to be honest have no clue about digital art specifically a lot of my method is just Bullshittin It™ but heres some more general art tips if that helps?

and i did a little tips thing for coloring a while back

  • flip your canvas while you work. I know it sucks and makes it look like you drew it blindfolded but you gotta. flipping the canvas is a good way to show if something’s asymmetrical or wonky, and you keep fixing it until it looks alright both ways. this is easiest and much less frustrating if you start doing this from the beginning instead of halfway through your piece so youre not ‘wasting time’ undoing an hour of work. its really irritating at first but eventually youll get used to it and your art will look alright both ways!

like here’s a horizontally inverted face i drew before i started flipping back and forth compared to a more recent one, its much less wonky and off-center (even though my style is more cartoony in the latter, the anatomy is still weird looking when flipped)

  • draw things you dont like drawing using the techniques by someone you admire good at drawing that thing. bad at hands? does an artist you like have a hands tutorial? try that and draw them anyways. its gonna suck and youre not gonna like it but you gotta (and by the way everyone sucks at drawing hands at first, not just you)
  • if you’re drawing drawing people, practice features you’re not used to. for example making everyone white because you dont want to color dark skin/giving everyone upturned button noses because you dont want to draw broad/big ones isnt an excuse you gotta! dark skin and broad noses arent inherently harder to draw, you might just not be used to them. practice monolids, hooked noses, broad noses, big lips! again using the above example i used to give everyone the same upturned nose for no real reason besides that i didnt want to experiment.  if youre drawing a black character they’re going to have different physical features than a white or asian character. in the beginning it might be tricky because you want to avoid making caricatures, and this can be easily avoided by doing studies of real people of that race
  • even if you have a cartoony style, you need to learn anatomy. you can only break the rules if you know them first! obviously my style gives bodies a very exaggerated shape– like genji here, obviously no real human is shaped like this and i’m focusing more on gesture/personality than realism–

(and i’m not saying my grasp of anatomy is perfect obviously, still learning) but i do study  anatomy and the exaggerated shapes here are more exaggerated/extreme versions of real shapes found on the body.

i uhhh idk if thats helpful but yeah! if theres something more specific you want help with feel free to ask

So You Want to Write About Witches and Magick: Some Advice

Hi everyone; hope today is going well for you! Today, I’m going to be talking about witchcraft and magick in fiction from the angle of writing it. I realize many witches (including myself) have a burning desire to see more realistic portrayals of magick and the Craft, and there’s no better way to go about it than for us to take pen to paper ourselves!

This short series of tips is designed for those who want to write a story with characters who practice magick in a more realistic fashion than seen in novels like Harry Potter. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with Harry Potter, of course, but there’s room in the genre of magick for realism, too! Hence, why I’m writing this. I’ll be using examples both from my own writing and from novels I enjoyed that featured realistic magick.

Why write realistic magical fiction?

So, why a realistic portrayal of magick? Obviously, most novels and stories that feature magick are of the fireballs-and-glowing-spells variety, and not very realistic at all. That makes for good reading, too, but more realistic portrayals also have a place insofar as they’re incredibly unique and interesting! Why not stand out from the crowd a bit?

It’s also worth noting that most witches, I think, if given the choice, would prefer to read something more realistic fiction-wise over an equally well-written fantastic portrayal. I know I would, and I feel like it’s important for magical practitioners as a community to write and create their own magical narratives, providing role models and other hallmarks of good media.

There’s also the not-so-small matter of how magick actually operates in the real world. I don’t know about you, but my Craft is intensely personal, and exploring it (or a character’s equivalent) in fiction makes for strong characterization. Furthermore, real-life magick is more nuanced than just “she throws fireballs,” and is bound to entice your fellow witch readers who love subtlety and delight in detail.

So, those are some reasons I, as a witch, would like to read (and write!) more realistic portrayals of magick in fiction. How do we do it, though? What sorts of tips can be offered? Let’s begin by discussing the hallmark (I think, anyways) of excellent stories - characterization! How do you create compelling witch characters and interesting magicians?

Characterization

The first important thing to note is that, as you no doubt know, witches and magicians are an incredibly diverse lot. Witchcraft in and of itself is only one of many magical styles, and others exist, including things like conjure and ceremonial techniques.

Within many broad categories, you find a wealth of smaller traditions. What kind of magick does your character practice? Sweep, by Cate Tiernan mixes real magick with fantasy, and in that series, most of the characters are Wiccan, but participate in a variety of different styles of magick, ranging from herbal casting to spirit work. Realize, too, that your character will probably work with a variety of techniques, so keep that in mind, as well!

Secondly, ask yourself what your characters believe. How do they conceptualize their magical experiences? Do they believe in a deity or worship a godform, such as the Wiccan goddess or an older pagan deity? Are they Christian? Jewish? Taoist? Views on how magick works and why are as diverse as practitioners themselves, so you need to consider what sort of paradigm your characters are working and living within, as well as why.

I want to note that I’d be careful writing about practices that are foreign to you (the writer). If you know nothing about Christianity, don’t make your character a Christian, for example, unless you’re willing to do a lot of research to create a sensitive portrayal. As to myself, I’ve experimented with a lot of magical paradigms (such as chaos magick and Thelema) and I tend to draw from those when I write.

I’ve had characters who were Wiccan, chaotes, and Thelemites in past works. It’s usually best to write what you know. Don’t feel as if your story needs to be full of characters from many different paths or religions to be realistic. Such a story would be realistic, but there’s nothing technically unrealistic about, for example, a story focused solely on chaos magick. Err on the side of caution here to avoid inaccurate or trite portrayals of actual practices. Again, write what you know.

One thing worth avoiding is stories where the main character or characters discover they’re the “chosen ones” and realize a great destiny. I suggest avoiding it because it has become relatively cliche in fiction as a whole, but also because it’s unrealistic in the world of realistic magick. It’s tacitly conceivable that someone might somehow find themselves in such a position, but very cliche in fiction.

Mostly, it’s unrealistic because magick rarely works that way, and while that shows my own bias (I don’t believe in destiny as such), I’d avoid it just for the cliche factor. I’ll admit in one of my stories I did feature a character who was the reincarnation of a famous folk hero and had a certain “special destiny.” This was a very low-level thing and didn’t feature everyone treating them differently because of it. It was also balanced out with other characters having similar situations, thus making the “special” character relatively ordinary.

One of the benefits of writing more realistic magical fiction is that characters can literally be anyone. There’s no need for them to have been raised by arcane wizards in a windswept castle, because, in real life, witches and magicians come from all walks of life. We could be your neighbor, or a friend. The most important thing is that you work out what your character does magically, why, and what they believe about it. This is, of course, in addition to normal guidelines for good characterization.

Plots and Telling a Good Story

Now, let’s talk about plots? What makes a plot suitable for realistic magick? What plots don’t work within this genre? Which are cliche? Let’s dive in.

Since the keyword here is “realism,” plots can be taken easily from real world experiences and inspiration. Just like me and other real-life witches, witches or magicians in realistic stories will have normal, everyday hardships and joys, and you can explore this. That approach is, in my opinion, much more interesting than just focusing on the magick itself. A story where magick is the main driving force of the plot is rarely going to work well; something else must be there to drive the magick instead!

As an example, I’m currently working on a short story called Curse Your Local Heroin Dealer. It’s gritty and very much a NSFW thing, but it features a coven of folk witches who find themselves at odds with local drug dealers who’re literally poisoning the community. The main conflict has no real magical aspect; rather, magick is a tool used to solve problems for the characters. It also draws a lot from my experiences living for a while in an area with a serious heroin epidemic, and I think it’s turning out to be a compelling and meaningful story.

As another example, look at the Circle of Three series by Isobel Bird. In those stories, the three main characters are burgeoning Wiccan witches. While magick is present, it isn’t a means to an end itself. The girls deal with all the normal struggles of high school students, but face them with a magical twists. Plots include relationship drama, dealing with the death of loved ones, and local mysteries. All of the stories could conceivably have been written without magick, but adding magick creates depth and shifts the story into interesting territory.

In particular, avoid situations where magick is the sole solution to the character’s problems. Just as, in real life, a witch can’t wave a wand and fix a problem, your characters shouldn’t be able to just do a spell and have their world set aright. Instead, the magick can be a vehicle for them moving forward, but also cause for introspection and character development. This is done particularly well in the Witches Chillers series, where the main character’s social awkwardness is underscored by her feeling less adept magically than her peers.

Building a World

A few notes on worldbuilding: you wouldn’t think it necessary when you’re going for realism, but it absolutely is. Anytime you have witches and magicians in a story, they’re going to interact with the wider society just as we do in the real world. Pay attention to the way society treats the occult as a source of inspiration. How will characters handle being feared (or laughed at) for their practices? How will they handle the increasing fascination of society?

Another thing to consider is magical social structures in the story. Will your character belong to a magical Order, secret society, or coven? In most cases, it’s a bad idea to use real-life organizations in a story. Instead, you should invent your own fictional ones. This isn’t difficult, because you can crib a bit from real life, just not too much. In one of my stories, I created a secret society similar to (but distinct from) the Ordo Templi Orientis as a backdrop for a story about a character’s struggle with depression and how it affects their magick. In other stories, I’ve written about fictional covens and traditions of magick.

Finally, as a last tip, do not slander real paths or traditions for the sake of creating a villain. It won’t be believable if you do it, and will, furthermore, anger people. Why do that? It’s pointless to create a villain who’s a super-scary LaVeyan Satanist, because five minutes of research will tell your readers that LaVeyan Satanism isn’t all that frightening, let alone evil.

I avoid this in my stories mostly by creating traditions and paths out of whole cloth for the antagonists. The villains in one story I’ve been working on, for example, worship an egregore that takes the form of rat, but doesn’t exist in real life. Another option is to just make the antagonist’s path or tradition irrelevant to their villainous activities, but that can be difficult to do well. In short, try not to play to stereotypes about occult traditions, and don’t slander large (or small) swathes of the community in the name of a villain.

I hope this was helpful and inspirational for budding magical writers out there! There is so much potential in this genre, and I would love to see more of it. If you’ve favorite stories that use this approach, do share them with me, so I can enjoy them, too. If you, yourself, have written any realistic magical fiction, why not share it? I know I look forward to reading more in this genre!

That video was so soft tho in my opinion, I love how they talked about dan and kept adrressing him as if he were their own child. They also made a few random comments here and there that really made me think about their relationship and their future. I'd love to hear your thoughts, you are way better at articulating things! :D

YES dude (though idk about me being better this summary is SPOT ON!!!!) lots of cute moments and parenting insights in this. i loved it!!!!! i’m just gonna copy paste my running commentary while i watched hahah :)

  • ok right off the bat I’m just. laughing. dan’s words in the intro are so confusing hahaha. “‘won’t somebody please think of the children?’ we’re not. too late for all of you.” ……… what? i mean i think they’re referencing this clip from the simpsons and i think dan is trying to say they’re not ‘thinking of us,’ like to make a joke that they’re inconsiderate or that their content is bad (in the way he always does when he’s like ‘i’m so sorry this is a complete disaster,’) but instead he just sounds very much like he’s saying he and phil aren’t thinking of ‘children’ right now, like not thinking of having children right now esp bc he mumbles the ‘too late for all of you’ bit so it was all jst very jarring and i began this video w heart racing and eyes wide, ready to ~pick up on anything~ and for daniel howell and his dumb way of speaking to always keep me on my toes ugh what a mess
  • regardless. phil sassing dan at the beginning for talking over him,,,, yes. ‘i’m trying to do an intro! let me finish!’ the sweetest words in the english language
  • dan’s summary of toddlers: they run around, they get very angry, and they slowly learn to poop
  • musings on the audience: we’re ‘ready to pick up on anything’ and we ‘can see it all’ love this self-aware, multi-layered, meta humor, kings of comedy
  • 1:47 dan saying ‘how many years would you have to use a toilet and not clean it,’ made me confront the reality that dan cleans toilets at least once in a while. stars! they’re just like us
  • ‘dil get your hand down that u-bend stat’ is honestly so funny. phil’s giggle when dan is ‘not particularly comfortable’ is so cute
  • their sharing in a bit of nostalgia for their daycare memories and bonding over the similarity of their experiences. stop. i love how dan knows the distance from wokingham to manchester off the top of his head and characterizes their age gap as ‘a couple of years.’ i feel queasy
  • dil is werrrrqing it according to dan. he is also party miami dad
  • phil acknowledging the existence of the ripped jeans and envisioning them turning into ripped shorts. didn’t know i needed that. very into it
  • dan committing to wearing a crop top in the event that he ever has abs. can phil please tell him to stick to his guns about subverting society’s standards for male beauty and to therefore go ahead and rock a crop top regardless of his abdominal musculature, if that’s what he wants??? ?
  • phil actually hates the crop top and shorts. dan says it’s amazing and starts to criticize phil (‘phil stop be—‘ in his typical higher-pitched tone of indignation) but then gets thoroughly distracted by dil doing crunches lmao
  • this might be really weird but I’m obsessed w watching the way phil uses his hands when he gets excited. just like. watch his hands from 4:38 to 5:15 it’s the most heartwarming thing u will likely ever see. i think in this vid in particular he was even more expressive than usual and i noticed he clasped his hands near his chin or grabbed his own face a number of times and it was so cute. phil lester, actual king of gesticulation. i always wonder if this tendency is natural for him or something that he kind of forces in order to sort of appear more animated/performance-y when he’s filming (cause something about it sort of feels like a nervous tic at times!!! but idk!!!! body language experts, weigh in!!!)
  • 5:37 dan is confused then starts singing along and they make weird noises i have no idea what they’re referencing and i have never hated their connection more. i feel so left out
  • dan’s idea of a school-aged child is obsession w playstation and pokemon
  • dab is sprinting maniacally and in my current state of mind i find it fucking hilarious
  • dan has mentioned dil’s abs like 10 times in  7 mins
  • i like how they both immediately agree w no discussion that creativity is the most desirable trait of those options
  • also cheerful. dan says ‘i like cheerful’ and fuck I’m soft
  • dan is genuinely emotional about child dab which is so cute
  • i love how actually disappointed phil is that this child’s fav animal is a frog and how dan immediately comes to his defense. this feels like eerily realistic insight into a situation dnp would def get into with their child
  • ‘easy beans’ phil owns my heart
  • they buy dab an art table thing and phil says ’we need to make him the most creative child possible.’ i love that with minimal discussion they immediately want to get stuff for dab to encourage his talents it reminds me of dan ranting about what makes a good parent (someone who equips their child to pursue their passions)
  • dan says he needs to be connected to the internet and phil hesitates bc he’s so young and dan is immediately outraged. and then phil immediately caves. this also felt so insightful to me, like we were watching them kind of talk out their real life approach to parenting and exposing their child to technology
  • 16:01 their enthusiasm about dab’s drawing like y’all i know this is a sim but they’re rly treating it like a real kid and it’s just too vividly mirroring how they would obviously react to their real child’s first ever drawing and I’m emotional
  • phil immediately suggests hanging it up and they both have a long awwwwwww aiwejroaiejroaier this is Too Much
  • omg the exchange at 16:54 about cake made me wanna die i feel like first off it is v rare to hear phil call dan by his name in videos (other than when he’s exasperated and yells ‘dan!!!!’ as an interjection bc dan is being a shit) so it immediately just felt like a more personal moment and then the way that dan was like ofc we can and must cater to ur random craving and order cake delivery immediately after filming like he just rolls w it and it’s just such a spontaneous and sweet little moment and godddddd they def curled up and ate cake after they were done w the video, on their new couch, in their new fancy lounge, in their new home, bc they can just do that. fucking hell their domestic bliss is giving me so much envy my heart physically ACHES with it
  • ‘baking a cake in your bikini that’s quite iconic’ phil is just out here empowering women to love themselves
  • then dan butting in with ‘what a milf’ nice, it’s been forever since he’s been that explicit about female attraction i was shook. i like that he immediately asks if he’s allowed to say it and phil immediately shuts him down. i mean there’s a slight chance that’s just for comedic value but it feels sort of in line w the notion that they (esp dan) have consciously toned down and all but eliminated female attraction mentions (or sexualization) from their dialogue in videos bc they’re aware of their mostly female audience (this speculation aside in all honesty why is eliza’s bod low-key bangin)
  • 18:16 when dan is like walking thru his vision for dab as the social arty kid and evan as the shy genius he is literally writing fic in his head idk why he’s even tryna make fun of tumblr’s interest in this ship he’s the biggest stan out there all of the dab x evan entries on wattpad will be by dan under various pseudonyms
  • para-BOWL-uhs is this how brits say parabola or is dan just terrible
  • 19:54 dan wants them to hook up confirmt

lol fuck this video was good and dnp are going to be fucking amazing dads idec that’s the only conclusion from this video that matters

Please shut up with the hate

Guys! Please! I am so tired of seeing unjustified hate here in Tumblr!

So very, very, VERY, very tired. I can’t even search fandom/character/ship tags anymore, so can y’all please just shut up with the “this is disgusting” and “please kill yourself” when the things have nothing wrong with them??

- Liking an evil/villain/anti-hero character doesn’t make their fans bad people in real life, it just means they might find said characters interesting and important to their respective fandoms, and writing redemption stories or made-up backgrounds/explanations for why they are evil doesn’t mean their fans justify or ignore what said characters did wrong

- Bringing a character dead in canon “back to life” in fanon doesn’t make the fans crazy or mentally ill (I feel like this one is so dumb that I shouldn’t put it here, but trust me when I say that I’ve seen hate messages sent to people merely because they make AUs where character live or they just refuse to believe they died in canon and make theories on how they are alive)

- Shipping enemies/previous enemies doesn’t mean people approve of abusive relationships (unless the stories/fan art they make is strictly abusive, which in some cases can serve to bring awareness to said issues or have shock value, as long as it’s not romanticizing abuse it’s ok) no matter how much the characters hate eachother in canon, sometimes people like to make their own AUS where characters were not enemies to begin with or maybe they grow to like eachother and forgive eachother in a healthy way

- Shipping characters with an age difference is not automatically pedophilia, no matter what age they have in canon or if one met the other whilst they were adults and the others children (even if that freaks you out, as long as they are all portrayed as adults, be the age difference 1 year or 90 years, it’s still legal)

- Shipping a character who did something really bad to another character, no mater how much you hate the ship, is ok to draw/write if it does not encourage violence or abuse (much similar to what I said above with the enemies one)

- Liking something that you don’t understand the appeal to or that is just not that popular (as long as it’s ok and not illegal) doesn’t mean fans are trying to convert you or shipping/liking things on purpose to get you, it means they want to be left alone in their own likings and that you should respect them and go do what you want instead of hating on them

Here’s what you should do if you still hate these things but they are completely legal and ok:

If it’s on one or few SPECIFIC artworks or artists and not the whole ship/fandom, you should:

- Use an anti tag so that it doesn’t flood the tags of people looking for artworks and stuff, or just adress the artists themselves

- If they haven’t shown signs of being rude or approving of actual illegal actions (rape, abuse, violence, murder, etc etc) don’t be disrespectful (for example if they draw something very violent that triggers you but they express that they find it wrong and that it’s meant to bring awareness to that issue, ask them/criticize them politely and don’t jump in attacking them straight away)

- Use clear arguments and organize them so that it’s easy to understand your points and so that people don’t confuse criticism with hate

- Judge the art, not the artist. Only judge the artist when the artist made their points of view and true beliefs extremely clear

If you want to rant on the whole ship/fandom:

- Use the ship/fandom tag but keep your opinion/rant polite and respectful to the people who also use the tag

- Don’t mistake one person’s headcanons or art for the whole fandom and every single fan, because of course there are bad apples in every tree, but that doesn’t make every single one bad

- Don’t accuse all fans of being rapists, pedophiles, abusive, etc without any motive, with your only “proof” being what they ship or what fandoms they are in or what characters they like

And now can y’all please shut the hell up and go easy on the “kill yourself”’s?

I’m gonna tag some ships here that I like or where I’ve seen this sort of hate lately, be free to tag more to stop this non-sense hate

Thunder and Lightning

Smutty imagine where you get out of a bad relationship and go to Tyler for comfort and share an intimate moment.

A/N: Metaphorically I’m a whore…

You never cared much for thunderstorms. The expressive sound of thunder and the cracks of light that split the sky apart never found a home within you.

Tonight, the weather seemed to be laughing at you. There were bruises forming on your arms and with tears in your eyes, you drove through the torrential rain.

Somehow, the flashes of lightning led you right to Tyler’s house and the growls of thunder, guided you to his front door.

Any thoughts/fave moments on the new gaming vid? :^) bless us with your words pls

ahhhh god they just seemed so happy and chill in this video didn’t they? i enjoyed it quite a lot. it was unexpectedly funny in places and pretty typics bants for them and i loved that phil voiced pretty lengthy opinions throughout it. i also thought dan went out of his way repeatedly to signal his awareness of the audience gaze, making this an interesting video in that it was simultaneously more calm and less “produced” or over-performed but also v self-aware (whereas normally when dnp get super in their heads about recognizing that everyone is watching them they become v persona-y and overdone.) i’ve divided up my thoughts for each of them and thought i’d go sort of question by question (they are bolded)!!! i think in general there aren’t too many profound conclusions to be drawn from this video–the thing about their being super aware that this is going to go out to their audience of millions is that they become more restrained in saying anything actually illuminating about their more serious thoughts/feelings. but that being said there were obvi a solid number of noteworthy moments

~phil~

  • the boy was so assertive and even sassy in this. i was excited. lil comments throughout like, ‘I’m a bit concerned that you’re seeing it as a brown circle .. new video: getting dan’s eyes checked,’ or ‘life isn’t grand theft auto guys,’ or just the way in which he delivers the ‘let me tell you my answer’ during the monkey question .. he was just so forthright in voicing his thoughts and taking no shit and i was rly loving it the whole time, bless him
  • when introducing the vid dan talks about how the audience will judge them but phil quickly follows with a reassuring ‘we’re learning things about each other’ and i thought that was interesting like he wants to insert that note of authenticity to push back against dan’s comment. i mean i rly doubt they’re doing this game to learn a single damn thing they don’t already know about each other but phil with this comment is trying to make us feel more like we are watching them do something genuine on a chill afternoon at home, instead of something that they are literally performing for us. cool cool
  • illegal firearm: good stuff. a lovely demonstration of phil’s ~lateral thinking~ and tendency towards constructing a fuller narrative for whatever info is presented to him.
    • i liked that he kept asking for more information and questioning dan w details like “how do i know they’re illegal” “whose drawer” etc. and dan tries to move on and end the speculative questioning but phil literally says “wait” to keep talking about the methods he would use to evade being accused of any crime if the firearm was in his own drawer.
    • also his voice is so northern here when he’s like ’then they’d know i didn’t touch it’ the way he says ‘touch’ yes good
  • the power to stop time: this one was mad interesting.
    • first of all. they’re not sleeping. phil only slept 5 hours. we’ve written so many posts about their being tired and rushed in their content bc they were churning out so many vids in the time before they left for australia but damn, to hear phil confirm he only slept 5 hours is p cray. it’s no wonder they were soooo ‘chill’ in this. they’re tired.
    • with respect to the actual question tho. i love phil asking ‘what is a pervy stuff’ and dan being so done w phils attempt at maintaining innocence. but then i also loved dan trying so hard not to smile when phil is grinning and clarifying that he doesnt mean that he doesnt know what a pervy stuff might entail but just that he needs to know ‘how pervy are we talking.’ lol dan is so amused and fond. then phil actually laughs so hard at dan saying ‘as long as u don’t leave a trace’ which is great bc phil’s unfiltered/genuine reactions to sex talk that aren’t trying to be revolted or unaware or uncomfortable are great
    • phil’s actual real time go-to thought for what he would do with this power is sneaking into a locker room and he says it with a glaring lack of gendered pronouns. noted. in conjunction with his interest in abs this is very fascinating information to me.
    • and then dan is very insistent phil would do the pervy stuff even after phil states he’s going with disappearing from a convo. he signals it while phil is explaining his choice then even explicitly says ‘you tell the audience that.’
  • trapped in sewer: phil would lick a foot. dan needs us to know so he repeats it. ok sure fine
  • shitting when sitting: phil is a creative. the iron pants solution, king of innovative undergarments
  • mike tyson fight:
    • the synchronized ‘why would u let him win’ was cute.
    • dan saying ‘punch me dad’ is so chill now. like. no one gives any fucks. and phil is at the point where he literally agrees and says ‘guess that’s why’
    • i’m constantly shook about character development it’s starting to be unhealthy
  • visiting space: ok the first and only thing this made me question is whether we have ever heard phil utter the word orgasm. have we? i actually don’t think we have and i was laughing at how much he evaded saying it in the way he talked about this question. g-rated phil may be long dead but he’s still keeping things as clean as he can, given the circumstances. dan did not try and insinuate that phil is just saying moonwalking for the audience. so dan is fine saying phil rly wants to perv if he had the power to stop time, but he draws the line at insinuating phil wants to orgasm in space. good to know dan has (completely arbitrary) boundaries.
  • ah yes. the already iconic monkey question: several noteworthy lines.
    • p: i would spoon a monkey for sure. he didn’t miss a beat w that. confident statement of interest in animal intimacy from phil. splendid.
    • p: k-k-mar-kiss? i didn’t say kiss? d: that’s non-sexual it can be like a friendly kiss, a romantic one. interesting to me in that it confirms that dan draws distinctions between friendly (platonic), romantic, and sexual intimacy but that he also sort of equated platonic and romantic. on twitter he stated in a reply that he thinks friendly kissing is like a cheek kiss in greeting. its likely that romantic kissing is something more than that and more like the spooning and whatnot he suggested, but he lumps both of them into this category of a loving and intimate relationship. meanwhile sexual kissing is obvi ,, sexual kissing. but cool to hear a little bit about the way dan conceptualizes these categories
    • d: (about acting like a married couple) that could have a lot of drama and tears. you’d fight non-aggressively. i mostly think he’s using the common dumb jokes that society makes about marriage as being a loveless trap but also interesting that he went right to that dig and didn’t rly laugh about it or try to make it seem like a joke. he just said it and it’s sort of weirdly specific. ofc we can easily speculate that this might reveal some of dan’s thoughts about marriage or rly just his thoughts on a long term relationship bc it’s less about the institution of marriage. but i have doubts on whether that’s reasonable since, as i’ve been saying, dan is v aware he’s being watched and i doubt he’d take this as an opportunity to voice his thoughts about marriage and commitment and what is likely to happen when two people “act like a married couple”
    • d: i mean you couldn’t have anyone else in your life if you have this loving relationship. ah i love this one. dan confirming that whether or not sex is in the equation, a loving and intimate relationship would mean there would be no space for another person in phil’s life is just. good. unlike the marriage comment i do think we can analyze this one a bit further bc it’s almost a throwaway comment–it’s not the punchline or centerpiece of what dan is saying making it more likely to be a reflection of how he really feels. and it’s not a common thought to be honest, that if you’re in an intimate/loving relationship you can’t have anyone else in your life, meaning it doesn’t seem like some common joke he’s just repeating. i take it to mean that dan sees romantic love as a true marker of closeness and connection with someone–a closeness that you can’t and don’t share with other people whom you do not romantically love. and that that intimacy doesn’t have anything to do w the sex that you may or may not be having with the person that you love. what a romantic fuck. honestly spoken like a man whose best friend and long term romantic love are one and the same.
    • p: let me tell you my answer. i would spoon the monkey and watch some game of thrones and then go to bed in separate rooms. honestly, to me, this is the least interesting comment in this whole exchange. i know a lot of people think this sounds oddly reminiscent of dnp’s relationship or something but i genuinely think phil was in this scenario in his head. maybe he’s pulling from real life when thinking about the elements of being romantically intimate w someone that he could use for his example (aka spooning and game of thrones) but i think he’s rly thinking about the monkey and how not to spend too much time with it in this scenario, hence the sleeping in separate rooms addendum. idk. he’s talking about a relationship w a monkey yall i dont think he’s going to use that as a proxy to give us a thinly veiled clue about his day to day habits with his not-as-yet-confirmed boyfriend. mostly confused that a lot of people are treating it as “confirmation” that dnp don’t have sex lol

~dan~

  • ‘this is really going to say a lot about our personalities and you’re going to judge us.’ he opens strong with that audience awareness. it carries throughout the video.
  • house is on fire: probably the most interesting of the dan questions.
    • dan looks so uncomfortable as soon as phil inserts himself into this scenario by saying that he (phil) would be “all the people.” the sigh is so real bc dan clearly did not want to treat this like a serious question but phil framing it as dan needing to choose between his own life and a kitten’s life and phil’s life suddenly really ups the seriousness of it.
    • i feel for him. that’s honestly such a fucking difficult question to answer. i thought of the closest relationship in my life which is my sister and what i would do if she was like ha ha who would u save me or yourself and then having to actually think about both of those horrifying scenarios. either dan lives and has to live without phil or phil lives and has to live without dan and like jfc how r u supposed to pick or even try to take that seriously idk
    • i say all of this to add more context to dan’s answer and the sarcastic ‘bc the internet is watching,’ that he adds to it. i genuinely think dan was uncomfortable with this question and i also fully empathize with that so i think the sarcasm was added as a way to treat it more like a joke like ha ha i guess i’ll save u bc i’m a good person not ha ha i guess i’m picking this bc idk what to do since this question is horrific
    • ‘everyone is inherently good,’ says phil. ‘or at least that’s what i want to believe.’ i always think the thing w phil+optimism is a bit overhyped but like damn if he’s rly out there trying to believe this, then that’s p cool and very very lovely
  • everything turns into gold: there was def a dan rant about physics or monetary inflation or something that got cut out of this question bc he yells about it being stupid then there’s a v glaring jump cut then he’s saying ‘in a universe where this makes sense,,’ lol idk whether to be relieved or intrigued about the fact we didn’t get to hear it
  • phil dead and he’s been hanging w the twin: i loved the bit when phil asks dan to ask him a question only phil would know the answer to and dan responds, essentially, that there isn’t a question he could ask phil bc ‘you’ve been fernando the whole time.’ dan is wrong lol the question doesn’t say that the best friend has always been the twin–just that the best friend died at some point in the friendship and was replaced w a twin, unbeknownst to dan. i love that dan can’t even entertain the possibility that phil could be replaced with someone at some point in their friendship like nope too outlandish it’s obvi just saying phil has been a person w a different name all along .. in which case, as dan rightly points out, there’s hardly a dilemma. it’s just that you didn’t know your friend’s real name. what is the point of that. lol. a cute and probably unintentional way of avoiding any of the emotional weight of this scenario and i love it
  • dan as pres: dan thinks he’d be good in the role of president. he probs would be ok
  • spider: i am very fascinated by the way dan leans kinda forward and mostly into phil at 9:04 when he’s talking about being a spider and exploring someone’s body. why did he do that. what is he doing idk
  • become a god:
    • making fun of lads and lad culture. i’m into it. i am always into them lowkey shitting on toxic masculinity. so funny.
    • again phil tries to insert himself in the scenario by saying that if dan chose to incinerate earth he’d be incinerating phil, but dan was absolutely not having it

overall they are cute and clever and good at knowing where to draw boundaries about the things they talk about but to do so in a gentle and natural way for the most part so this video was good and interesting but probs not revelatory but still very entertaining and funny and sort of soft in unexpected ways so i really liked it. i really like them xx

Nik's Tips for discreet witchcraft

I know there are a lot of young witches who need to be discreet about their craft, so I’ve made some tips for how to practice witchcraft and still be discreet. Just putting a little disclaimer, I don’t practice all of these myself (like the color magic) but I thought they would be useful to include, nor do I claim to know everything, I constantly learn just like everyone else.

Witch Tips

1) keep a small notebook/sketchbook

A pocket sized notebook is helpful for any witch but expecially for being discreet. Drawing sigils and writing spells in the notebook is a way to cast spells in the open with no one noticing. The pocket notebook is also a great system for artists and writers as drawing and creative writing everyday really improves skill, and if someone happens to look inside the book doesn’t scream witchcraft.  I personally like using my own leather bound pocket book but the mini composition notebook also works and is less noticeable. A tip for doing the sigil or spell magic is when you write or draw imaging you intend in order to charge it and draw a circle around it to cast it (you don’t have to do this but it helps some witches). Putting a charm or sigil of hiding on the notebook will also help it not be too noticeable

2) Use online books

The Internet is an all around helpful source, but it’s expecially helpful for discreet witches who want to do reasearch. Getting hard copy books are great but can easily be seen lying around your room. It’s much easier to just use online books and you can find more subjects than just in a library.  If you’re worried about someone looking through your history you can always use incognito mode or simply delete the history and cookies after you’re finished.

3)Wearing simple crystal jewelry

Crystal jewelry may seem like it’s obviously witchy but with current fashion trends crystal necklaces are pretty common. Stones and crystals are used in magic all the time and have their own meanings, while it’s not uncommon for people to know that crystals have meanings it’s easy to brush off wearing crystal jewelry as just a fashion choice.  When getting crystal jewelry don’t buy from stores in the mall like hot topic or forever 21. These stores sell fake crystals, some places claim that their real but 99% if the time fashion stores sell glass instead of crystal(unless you go to an actual crystal/spiritual store, these are usually real).

4)Do rituals outside

The practice of rituals can be hard to do if you’re trying to be a discreet witch. Doing rituals outside help with not getting caught in the middle of a ritual. There is still a chance someone could catch you but it’s a very small chance and they’re most likely a stranger you’ll never see again. If you use incense in rituals being outside helps the smell not linger where people can smell and become suspicious as well. Being out in nature while doing rituals also helps green witches with spiritual energy.

5)Use scented candles for candle magic

Having lots of candles can raise suspicious with some people, scented candles fix this. Having one or two scented candles doesn’t seem abnormal and is pretty common. Yankee Candle has a great variety of color and scents, you can pick by a color you commonly use or by scent. Herbal scents such as rosemary and lavender double as color magic and scent magic. Make sure when you pick out candles pick a scent you like and that the smell won’t give you a headache.

6)Keep a small magic box

Having a small box is good for storing little witchy items and because the box is small it can be easily hidden. Keeping a candle, lighter, a few small crystals and some herbs, are a few basics that can usually fit in a small box. You can get a small wooden box at craft stores for about a dollar and decorate it or keep it plain, or even use an empty Altoids tin.  Another way to keep it hidden is putting a charm or sigil of hiding. Small magic boxes are also helpful for transportation to outdoor rituals.

7)Use color magic when getting dressed

Using color magic when getting dressed is a simple form of magic and no one can tell you’re doing witchcraft. When putting away your clothes you can easily charge the clothing with the intent so it’s ready for when you wear it. If you’re like me and wear the same color everyday you can write small sigils on the tags of clothing.

8)Write sigils in lotion

Writing sigils onto your skin with lotion or make up foundation are a great form of discreet witchcraft. Once you write the sigil and rub it into your skin it can no longer be seen therefore no getting caught. Rubbing the sigil into your skin helps imbue the magic into you. This practice is great for glamour spells.

9)Use whatever is in the kitchen for herb magic.

Buying or drying your own herbs could possibly raise questions, if you’re doing herb magic just try to use whatever herbs you have in the kitchen. The best way to do this is to just put the herbs in meals you’re having. When taking herbs from the kitchen just remember not to do it too often and get caught.

10)Avoid making an alter

This is kind of an obvious thing not to do. Having an alter is a very easy way to get caught and you don’t need an alter to perform witchcraft. If you insist on having an alter you can make a pocket alter which is basically the same as the small magic box in tip #6.

11)Pocket stones

Discreet or not pocket stones are useful. Pocket stones are just stones or crystals you keep in your pocket or in a pouch throughout the day. Most people won’t be going through your pockets so it’s good for a discreet crystal witch.

12)If you want to collect crystal also keep a rock/mineral book

Crystals are a fairly witchy thing but just adding a rock guide book makes it look like a simple collection which is pretty common. Whether your a discreet witch or not rock guide books are a good things to keep around if you want to learn.

13)Herb magic potpourri

If you make herb pouches use nicely scented herbs to have the pouch double as potpourri. If the pouches double as potpourri they’re more inconspicuous. Places the pouches around dirty laundry or in drawers, placement helps the pouches look more like potpourri and less like witchcraft.

Fic Rec

This is my contribution to the Fandom Fic Rec Days, a list of stories I love and cherish :) (I know this is gonna be super early, but it’s just gone midnight for me, so it definitely counts as the 10th!)

I’m well aware that a lot of these stories are already hugely popular and may not necessarily need extra publicity, but I love them and wanna share that love with the rest of Tumblr!

Dissolve and Absolve by @toluenesister

Ok. So this Batjokes story just absolutely broke me. The plot, characterisation, the writing, just uuuuhhhhhh! It’s too much! I’m left an absolute sobbing mess by the end and I really can’t recommend it enough. There are dark themes involved, which, at first made me hesitant to continue, but I did and those elements are dealt with so brilliantly that I actually understood why they were included. The development of Bruce and J’s relationship is amazing and anyone who hasn’t read it yet needs to right away, because not only is it incredible writing, but also has equally fantastic artwork to go with it!

Empire’s Son by blank101

This Star Wars story is another that just clawed its way into my head and refused to leave! It’s an AU about what’d happen if the Emperor had raised and trained Luke and words can’t describe how incredibly written and thought out it all is. The brotherly relationship that blossoms between Luke and Han is especially poignant and I don’t just recommend people read this, I DEMAND it!

System of Darkness by @infinitejedilove

Oh my Lord, this QuiObi story is nothing short of exquisite. It’s the story that actually made me start shipping the pair. Everything about it from the characters to their relationship and the plot are all so well done and flow beautifully. I was literally counting down the days, minutes and seconds until each update. It’s an absolute favourite that I will cherish and gush about forever.

Once More, Plainly by @oddlyexquisite

It’s not often I describe a fic as beautiful, but this QuiObi one absolutely is. It’s such an interesting concept, dealing with reincarnation and…just…the writing! My heart ached with each chapter in the most wonderful way. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

Onomatopoeia by aquabelacqua

Now, I’m not a Johnlocker and I found this completely by accident, but it’s so well and cleverly written that I immediately bookmarked the shit out of it! As well as their other stories heh. The characters are great and it was pretty hot, too! And if a non-shipper is saying that, it’s gotta be good.

Re-Entry by flamethrower

This - this - is an absolute beast of a QuiObi story! I just can’t get my head around the sheer immensity of scale, commitment and skill put into every inch of it! Writing like this is something I could only ever dream of and this person deserves every single kind of accolade and award going! Read it, people. Reeeaad iiiiitttt!!!!

Half Way Across by @dracze

Heh. Yeeaahhhhh…I don’t think this story really needs any more recs because I’m sure every single Batjoker on the planet has read it, but fuckdammit I love it! So it’s getting another one! I can’t express my adoration for this story with words (as my incoherent screams that are supposed to be reviews can attest), so have been forced to draw the shit out of it instead. It’s perfect and, if by any slim minuscule chance anybody hasn’t read it…well, quite frankly I dunno what you’re doing wth your life.

A Lesson in Restoration by Amadaun

This gorgeous little gem of a fic is for Oblivion from the Elder Scrolls series and there’s soooo much I love about it. It’s main character is an OC and she’s just so wonderfully fucking charming that I want her to be real so I can keep and protect her! It’s on hiatus unfortunately, but don’t let that put you off, because what is there is worth it!

Two Step by @synthwaves

I love this story. I really do. I love it so much I just wanna fucking eat it! Or make love to it. Or something. I dunno. I just know I have a lot of feelings for it. It’s set directly after the events of Batman: Europa and it’s so cleverly written, with amazing dialogue between Bruce and J that I cry with adoration. So people…just read it, kudos it, review it and shower it with all of the love, because it’s worth it! Like L'Oréal. But better!

Matchjokes by mitzvah (Melting)

I’ve read and re-read this thing so many times that if it was a book, I’d have gone through about three copies by now. It’s wonderfully written and I’d never even considered the pairing of Matches Malone and Joker before but it’s brilliant! So brilliant that I wanna draw from it, but it already has a lovely piece of artwork for it that everyone should admire here.

Catalyst by @frenetic-kinetic

This adorable story is so cute and gorgeous and wonderful and I just wanna cuddle it forever! It’s set in the Jak & Daxter universe (I fucking loooove those games!) and it focuses on a relationship between Jak and a lesser known character called Taryn. Please give it a read, especially if you enjoy the games, because it always puts a smile on my face!

The Letter M by @j-not-joker-not-jack-just-j

So this Batjokes story is a little different to others I’ve read. It’s basically the story of what happens if Joker actually dies when falling into the acid vat and returns as a ghost. I just adore the idea of it and the writing is great. It’s only got one chapter so far and I’m trying my damnedest to be patient waiting for an update. *drums fingers on table*

Third Eye Blind by glacis

Now I know Eye of the Beholder is not considered one of Ewan McGregor’s greatest films. But I like it and, regardless of whether you like the movie or not, this little fic is an amazing read. The writing, the plot, the mystery, it’s all so well done and I think it’s criminal that it hasn’t got a million more kudos and reviews!

Obsidian by @batjokesfuckina

Ok. I’m in love with this slice of Batjokesy awesomeness. It’s a collection of one shots and the relationship between the two is so great it makes me laugh, cry and squee with delight all at once. I didn’t know it was possible for a writer to reduce me to a puddle of feels with just two paragraphs but this one somehow managed! So everyone should stop whatever the fuck they’re doing and read it. Right. Fucking. Now. Go on! And leave kudos. And reviews. And love. Lots of love.

So there we are! If anyone else fancies doing this please do because fanfiction is a wonderful thing and the writers are a gift! More info on the Fandom Fic Rec Days can be found here

Aaaah, well thank you so much ;w; Body language is honestly some of my favourite things to try and bring out in a comic page. And those are some really high compliments! >w< thank you!

A big part of it is to remember that no human being (or animal) (or monster lol) in real life ever “stands still”. A person always stands in a way that reflects their mood, a thought, and their physical condition at that moment, if it doesn’t reflect an action. In the newest page, Sans leans a little to see if the human is out of sight. So in my mind, I imagine he has to look past the trees to see properly, which is why he leans. And then to emphasise the pose, I have him on his toes just to push the pose that little bit extra.

In earlier pages, I think a lot about the character’s personality as well as what they’re currently doing or saying. Sans is very withdrawn, so a lot of his standing poses are quite similar. Sans keeps his cards very close to his chest regarding his real thoughts and feelings, and so his standing poses rarely reflect too much, instead relying on things in the environment to change up what he’s doing. Papyrus is the exact opposite. he is very animated and gestures a lot. And so by extension, his poses are very extreme and show exactly what he thinks and feels.

On top of this, I very often give characters something physical to do or play against, which often just gives me a pose to work with so I don’t need to think too hard. Like when Sans and Papyrus reach their home early in the comic, I have Sans take his shoes off as he’s talking to Papyrus. This gives me things to draw while they talk not only for Sans, but then also for Papyrus who picks up after him.

In the morning, I give Papyrus a cup of coffee because that’s something you’d have in the morning. (I also imagine he enjoys spending the morning on the balcony with his hot drink although I couldn’t show that in the comic) So when he starts talking to Sans, the situation kinda just writes itself with Papyrus suddenly having a cup of coffee in his hands me going “ok… so now how does he pose if he’s holding this?” and making it up from there. Every solution is also a problem, which then also becomes a solution etc etc.

Also as a whole, I pay a lot of attention to other people’s art and how they handle poses and emotions. I have a lot of folders on my mac just for poses. I have several folders for photos of models, but I tend to use them more to check my anatomy.

And then I have a folder for “poses” which consists more of other people’s rough studies, tutorials, sketches and free to use references. I tend to use this one this most, usually for things like hand-poses or if I’m stuck on a technicality and I’m not sure how to push it. The hand is the second more expressive part of the human body after the face. Some sometimes a hand pose can actually lead me to know which expression or pose to give a character!

Then of course I look at how other artists have drawn and poses the characters in question in their art. I look at how they handle their poses, expressions, interactions and reactions to the world around them. I take cues from these, but I don’t copy the poses or use them as “reference”. Because I am drawing the same characters, it feels too much like “copying” to essential redraw an exact pose. However, it can help when I’m stuck on something like “how does Sans’ face work when he’s angry??”

And then of course, I have a lot of professional model sheets and production art that also help me problem solve or try to figure out how to express a certain emotion or feeling.

Body language in art and animation is something I’m just naturally drawn to (no pun intended) And so when I watch anything animated, I pay a lot of attention just instinctively to how a character is standing, responding, or moving in a scene. That thing where people say “can’t you just turn off your brain and enjoy a dumb movie?” like… no…. I can’t… because I am ALWAYS using my brain. In many ways but one of which is the constant taking note of what a character is doing. Even if its just on a “oh that’s nice!” level. I still remember it. So that maybe years later I go “What was that one pose that one character did in that thing I saw 5 years ago? That would be a good pose for this scene!”

I build up an internal reference library, and constantly take note of things I watch, read and see online. Usually no more than “I like this!” but that’s usually enough for me to remember it. Even if I never use the pose itself, it helps me better think of how characters react and interact with things. And then the more I see it, the easier it is for me to come up with ideas of my own.

(also. I have a deep unbridled love for actions and scenes in completely ordinary normal “boring” situations. Because those tend to be the hardest poses to pull off because they are things we do every day of our lives, subconciously without us thinking about them. So we recognise much faster when the pose is false, but when the pose is on point, it resonates with us a lot more. And normal posing is one of my personal favourite things)

This is also why something like Revolutionary Girl Utena is my favourite anime. because the shown with a limited budget, had to spend SO MUCH TIME on how they make a character stand or pose because they literally didn’t have enough money to make the characters move a lot. And posing is VITAL in utena, because the entire show has less to do with what people are saying out loud, and instead what they are DOING. Because the show operates on metaphors, visual cues, social cues, body language, and double meanings. For instance.

So in a show where no-one talks straight, everyone talks in double meanings, and you can’t trust what anyone says, body language becomes crucial in understanding people’s real motives, what is happening in a scene, and what is actually being said. It’s a great anime to exercise your observational skills. As well as your ability to interpret meaning from actions and body language, more than just speech and dialogue.

And then there’s the old fall backs. LIFE DRAWING. Which can never ever ever be stressed enough. Human observation. People watching. live action movies and taking note of acting (which is why I like movies from the 70s and 80s so much. The act had a more realistic tone to it, and the humanity shines through a lot better) as well as just simply, old fashioned practice.

Practice of EVERYTHING. Practice drawing. But also practice observing. Practice interpreting. practice analysing. practice remembering. Practice noticing. practice engaging when watching something instead of just passively watching. All these things take practice practice practice.

Anyway. This is a very long reply and maybe a little off topic for this blog ^^; but I hope it could at least help you out and give you somewhere to start if nothing else.

Teddy Ghost/Swagger Bishie ideas/story kinda

Dash starts crushing on his favorite punching bag because despite being weird and a dork Fenturd is kinda nice and cute and if he weren’t so antisocial and puny he’d have girls hanging off him constantly.

Dash getting jealous when other people bully Fentonio and starts defending him in a kind of ‘this is /my/ punching bag, get it?!’ way.

But then he sort of cools down on the actual punching because Fenton looks so tired and he’s barely making C’s he must have some sort of learning problem and is up studying all night poor thing.

(Side note, I have a headcanon that Dash won’t bully people with disorders. You never see Dash bully special needs kids, and yeah I get it’s a cartoon but at my school if you bully the specials you’re some kind of monster and everyone will hate you. But seriously Dash never really comments on kids’ glasses or braces. It’s usually their social status, interests, and size difference that he makes fun of. No one really gets bullied for things like blindness. I guess it’s one of those unwritten rules to not pick on the problems that nobody can help having.)

Dash starts noticing small things about Fenton. How he’s constantly dropping things and it freaks him out occasionally. How he has to wear a belt now to keep his pants up because he has lost a lot of weight now that Dash thinks about it. How when, on the odd occasion, he grins so big his eyes close after he gets a good grade. And god, those eyes, if the damn things were any bluer Dash thinks they would be glowing, and they kinda do sometimes when he’s angry or during the ghost attacks, just for a moment, if only Dash could get closer in those moments because sometimes he swears they look green from a distance.

When he picks Fenton up to threaten him or to stuff him in a locker Dash notices how cold Danny’s hands are, and for some reason that worries him a little. It worries him more when he gets in the boy’s face and can feel his cool breath even though it’s a good eighty degrees outside.

Dash wonders why Fenton avoids the locker room until the bell has rung and everyone else has left. His friends don’t seem worried, though. Dash has even heard them talk about how he doesn’t get the time to shower properly at home because he’s always so busy with ghosts, so he assumes that Fenton helps his parents with their dumb gadgets as well as doing homework all night of course why else would he be so exhausted all the time?

One time Dash accidentally leaves his phone in the locker room and returns to look for it. Instead he finds Fenton, dripping wet with a towel around his waist digging through his locker for something. What shocks Dash is all the scars and bruises on the boy. There’s a bad one in particular that streaks across his back like a jagged lightning bolt from his left arm to the right side of his waist. It looks deep and painful and Dash knew that wasn’t there in the beginning of the year. He grabs his phone and runs out of the locker room before Fenton has a chance to realize he’s not alone.

Dash begins treating Danny differently altogether. He wonders where in the fresh hell the kid got those scars. He knows he’s freaking Danny out by staring at him but never approaching him, never even saying a bad word to him about his family or his friends or anything. He can’t help it. Danny Fenton is less of a punching bag and more of an enigma to Dash now.

There’s a burn scar on Danny’s left hand Dash notices. It’s on his palm, and Dash only catches a couple glimpses of it as he and Danny are assigned as lab partners for this week. He wonders if he got that from goofing around in his parents’ lab. But then, Danny doesn’t seem the type to play around with dangerous things. With a sinking feeling Dash wonders if he got that from some kind of experiment, and this leads to a thought that his parents were using Danny as a lab rat. Dash dismisses it, because seriously they make enough money to buy real lab rats and Jazz doesn’t have any kind of marks like that on her hands.

Dash wonders where Danny always goes when Danny Phantom shows up.

He swears he sees Danny helping Phantom out at the amusement park when Phantom takes down the giant RV ghost. It makes him wonder if he got those scars from helping Phantom.

Dash thinks about throwing a Christmas party and inviting Danny and his friends with the excuse that Paulina put him up to it to lure Phantom again. When really, he wants to make Danny smile at least once at Christmas, because Danny is always in a bad mood when the holidays come around. It makes Dash wonder what could make Danny, who was so eager about Halloween and Thanksgiving and any holiday really, hate the mother of all holidays.

Dash sees Danny’s relationships and feels that little green goblin of envy growling in his chest. It’s everything he can do not to punch Danny for dating Paulina, and Valerie, and even his goth friend. Instead he takes it out on Mikey and the chess club and band and everyone who isn’t Danny or his football friends.

Dash confessing to Kwan about his crush on Danny, nothing else, and Kwan laughs and says “I always kinda knew. I mean, you do listen to boy bands and sleep with a stuffed bear named Fenton.”

Dash accidentally sneaks up on Danny and startles him. Danny responds with an automatic left hook, catching Dash’s cheek and knocking him over with more force than Dash thought was possible for someone so thin. He apologizes reluctantly and helps Dash to his feet and walks away, leaving the jock to wonder where the hell Danny learned to punch like that and where that strength came from.

Dash taking advantage of his tutoring sessions with Jazz to find out things about Danny, like that he likes to mow the lawn because he likes the smell of cut grass, or that he likes sea salt and vinegar flavored chips, and that he doesn’t like drinking bottled spring water because fish live in springs and fish pee. Dash’s favorite is that Danny likes old rock bands like Bon Jovi and Queen and the Eagles as well as Dumpty Humpty.

Dash always thought that Danny was a little of a pig when he ate. But now that he watches him the jock realizes the boy eats as if he’ll never see food again sometimes. As opposed to Foley who just eats like his mother never taught him what a fork was. For some reason it worries Dash.

Dash never knew that Danny drew. He never draws in class or at lunch. And it’s no wonder. For an assignment they have to include an illustration and Danny did that part. It stuns Dash at how quick and good he is. But suddenly Danny is surrounded by kids admiring his drawing and wanting him to draw them too. Dash shoos them away because honestly Danny is stressed out enough he doesn’t need these losers ordering him around. Danny just looks at Dash in shock.

Your day was spent with weak attempts at shaking the dream. The early morning shower to wash away the lingering feeling of hands spreading your thighs and dog teeth puncturing holes below your breasts with soapy hands and nails. Most of all, you tried to rid your body of the ecstasy it brought you every time you remembered it, leaving your fingers to delve between your folds and come underneath the spray of water from the showerhead.

Your reflection in the mirror all dark circles and heavy lids as you brushed your teeth mumbling curses against its bristles. You knew your friends were sure to mention it.

When you bent down to spit out the water downed paste, a scream left you launching you back from the sink. The face of the unknown man staring back at you, shirtless, with hands bracing himself against its edges.

Night times haven’t been easy since Groot started having nightmares, Quill and the Reader are the only people patient enough to soothe him.
Peter Quill x Reader
Words: 1, 222

Wailing in the next room make you sit straight in bed, your heart pounding. You slipped from your bed and dragged yourself out of your room and into Quill’s bedroom. Quill groaned and sat up in bed when you stumbled into his bedroom and walked over to the makeshift cot that Groot slept in. It was just a draw pulled out of an old cabinet that you’d stuffed full of pillows and blankets to keep it comfy, it was well big enough for Groot to sleep in comfortably and was a handy alternative to real cot.

In the middle of the draw Groot sniffled and tried, unsuccessfully, to calm himself.
“Hey cutie,” you cooed as best you could without yawning, “You’re safe, you’re okay. You’re with me and Peter.”

You held your hands out to him, he crawled them and curled up. Behind you, you could hear Quill stumble out of bed and you didn’t need to look to know that he was shirtless and stretching.
This routine was memorised for you both.

“Y/N, you get in bed,” Quill yawned, “I’ll go make Groot some chocolate milk and we’ll tell some stories.” He didn’t wait for your answer, he didn’t need too. You crawled into his bed and settled down within the still warm sheets, you sighed and tried not to get distracted breathing in Quill’s scent in case it drove you to face your attraction to him, it was something that you both ignored.

“Okay Groot, you hear that? Peter is going to make you some of that Terran drink that you like.” You tried to reassure him and he looked up at you big, glossy eyes.

Before everything that happened when you’d been hired to protect the batteries, Groot was happy to sleep in Rockets room but since then he suffered terribly with nightmares. Nightmares of being scared while Rocket was out in the forest alone with The Ravagers, everything that happened on the Ravagers ship, of being stuck in that suffocating tunnel alone and scared.

Groot was special and strong but he was still a baby and when he was scared Rocket panicked, he didn’t have the temperament to be helpful to Groot.

Drax could sleep through an avalanche and Gamora slept so little that it was unfair to have her sleep disturbed by Groot.

So you and Quill tag teamed it, you comforted Groot while Quill made him a Terran drink that he’d bartered for on the Xandar black market, he insisted it was what his mum would give him and it worked, it settled Groot right down. Though it was tiring work, Groot was worth it.

The only thing that made it hard was Quill’s jokes about you two practically raising Groot together like he didn’t know saying things like that made your heart skip.

Quill shuffled back into the room with the drink in a small cup, Groot insisted on drinking out of a cup instead of any kind of bottle because he wanted to be like the rest of the group.

“I’m back, panic over.” He joked and sat himself down on the bed next to you and held the cup out to Groot who sat in your lap. Groot held his hands out letting them morph into vines to wrap more securely around the cup and brought it to his mouth to take a tentative sip.

“I am Groot.” He smiled.
“I’d take that as ‘my compliments to the chef.” You said to Quill and he pulled the covers over his legs and settled down beside you.
“Well, I am known for my skills of making drinks at 2am.” He mumbled sleepily, his eyes closed momentarily before he realised that he was supposed to be helping.

"It’s okay Quill, go back to sleep. Me and Groot are fine here, aren’t we?“ You asked the small bundle in your lap.
He’d drank quite a bit of his drink already, he nodded, “I am Groot.”

Quill snuggled up to your side, dropped his arm around Groot and your waist. He rested his forehead on your shoulder, “I’m fine, I’m awake. I can go all night, if you know what I mean.” He chuckled against your arm and you shook your head at him.

"Did you really just make a sex joke at me right now?“ You asked as you gently took the now empty cup from Groot and placed it on the bedside table, he settled further into your lap. Quill answered his voice heavy with sleep and muffled into your arm, "I make them at you all day every day but you’re about as oblivious as Drax.”

Shaking your head you brought your spare arm up to play with Quill’s hair, “Oh I hear them, I just take them for what they are: you being a douchebag.”

“I shouldn’t have taught you that word.” He grumbled and pulled you both closer to him, Groot sighed dreamily and you could feel your eyes starting to droop.

Letting yourself slide down into the bed you curled onto your side so that Quill lay with his arm around you and his face in your back, Groot was curled in your arms.

“Peter, do you mind if I sleep here tonight?” You yawned and settled your head further into the pillows and his scent.
“You can stay here whenever you want.” He mumbled and you were almost sure that you dreamt him moving to gently kiss your shoulder as you drifted off to sleep.

—-

When she saw Quill’s bedroom light on, Gamora sighed to herself, she could hear his soft snoring so he must be asleep. Resolving to go and turn off the idiots light for him, she wandered over doing her usual late night ship checks that kept her calm when she couldn’t sleep.

Unsure of what compelled her, Gamora popped her head into the room and shook her head at the sight. You and Quill were curled up, sparked out asleep in the bed and Groot was perched on the end of the bed swinging his legs and trying to work Quill’s Zoon.

“Hi,” Gamora waved to Groot who stopped playing with the music player to wave back. Gamora snuck into the room and picked Groot up to cradle him in her hands, “Looks like you’ve worn these two out.”

Groot yawned and stretched his arms out wide.

Gamora tucked him back into his little bed and gave him a kiss goodnight, careful not to wake either of you she crept out of the room leaving the light on - at least for the moment - she was sure that Rocket was awake somewhere.

“It’s too late for you to be mysterious.” Rocket snapped as Gamora dragged him and his camera along down the hallway. Just as he was about to let out another string of insults, Gamora shushed him and pushed him into Quill’s bedroom.

He gave Gamora a grin and raised his camera, “Oh yeah, this is perfect, they’re never living this down.”
