“My Family’s Slave” and the people who don’t want to understand Filipino culture

I got blocked within 1 minute of sending the second tweet

Instead of listening to actual Filipinos about Lola and her legacy, Miss “I study and value diversity so I will never listen to people who actually know the culture and context in which this occurred” just blocks them for disagreeing with her

So here’s a message for all y’all who think you can fight for Lola’s story but then entirely disregard the culture from which she came:

Shut up and listen.

I am so fucking disgusted by every “oh this is so sad” “how could anybody do this” “she should have killed that family” comment from a westerner who has no context of our culture or how they themselves contributed to it

The country that makes a Filipino maid joke every other time we as a race are mentioned shouldn’t take the moral high ground because you suddenly feel sad about it

You don’t understand how Filipinos treat family, how they’re willing to humble themselves to extremes, how being in America is already a huge fucking deal for those who grew up in the province, how that contributes to the “utang na loob” culture that while not necessarily good, is a big part of how every Filipino operates

Yes, what happened to Lola was bad. I call her Lola because 1) She would not have gone by eudocia, not even with her own family and community. Filipinos have nicknames, always, with some exceptions (our driver Tommy’s actual first name is Tommy, so). 2) Lola means old woman as much as it means grandma, so for a lack of a name that isn’t just on her grave stone and birth certificate, we call her Lola, which people in the community would have called her at that age regardless. Which Kendall might have known had she not blocked every single Filipino who actually knows a thing or two.

What happened to her was slavery yes. Not because she served an abusive family, but because she didn’t have a choice and they didn’t pay her. It is not the kind of slavery you can put a black American context to, which is what Kendall did. In order to understand just why she didn’t leave even at the opportunities she was given, you have to understand her culture as much as her situation.

To do otherwise is an affront to anybody who’s experienced or experiencing the same. Filipino maids are being abused in every country, even paid. They’re treated like slaves today, at this very moment, but are not considered such because they have income, little as it is. But instead of saying “huhu how sad” and “we have to end their slavery!” think about why we do it and what could be done to make sure they’re treated fairly.

And actually listen.

Flirting is Hard When You’re Harry Potter

Original headcanon by @ harry-is-lily-ginny-is-james!!!

It’s still monday! …for a half an hour anyway. This one ended up being much bigger than I originally planned. I hope you like it~

(Now posted on AO3!)

“It’s all the paper talks about anymore,” Draco frowned, “Stupid Potter.”

“We’re agog,” Blaise said pouring himself and Draco a cup of coffee.

Pansy smothered a yawn and picked up a piece of toast, “Do tell.”

Draco folded his paper, eyes scanning past the picture to the drivel written below, “Potter’s going to join the auror’s, change the world,” he grumbled, “you’d think the sun shines out of his arsehole the way they go on about him.”

Pansy rolled her eyes.

“Couldn’t agree more,” A voice said behind him from the Ravenclaw table, “that Potter’s a total pillock.”

“Exactly-” Draco turned on his bench, his words choking off before they were halfway out of his mouth.

“I really don’t know what they see in him,” Potter said flatly, taking a massive bite of pancake.

Luna smiled absently at Potter’s side, “I don’t know, I’ve always thought he was quite nice.”

Potter picked up his pumpkin juice, “To-tal pil-lock.”

Draco felt his face go hot and he spun around back to his plate. Blaise quickly picked up his coffee cup to hide a growing smile. Pansy snorted, almost choking on her toast, she ducked her head and fumbled for her cup.

Draco grabbed his bag and left the table with an imperious sniff.

Iz Explains Stuff So You Don’t Have to: The Nightwing Debacle.

Hey guys! As promised, here’s a write up of what’s currently making waves in the DC/comic fandom today. Given that this subject somewhat related to the Hydra-cap nonsense, I thought it should be something I cover as well, just to sorta give non-comics fans/DC comics readers who might see this and want some context.

1. Who is Nightwing?

You guys know Robin, Batman’s sidekick who they almost always leave out of movies? This is the first (yes there’s more than one, but that’s a topic for another day) and possibly most iconic one to pop-culture. Named Richard “Dick” Grayson, Dick is the son of the flying Grayson’s , two circus acrobats who died due to mob interference during a show (he also has Romani heritage (which the comics often ignore) This will be important later). Bruce took Dick in and the rest is well history.

Dick probably has the most screen time over any Robin in film/tv adaptations, including Teen Titans, Young Justice, The Lego Batman movie, the original Adam West series, and Batman Forever. He’s arguably the best known Robin to non-comic’s readers.

Because time does pass in comics occasionally, Dick grew up and after a series of events that have been retconned so many times it’s not worth getting into, ditched the Robin mantle. He would later take up the title of Nightwing.

2. Why the name Nightwing?

Dick is a HUGE fan of Superman (no really, Superman is pretty much his uncle) and after he ditched the Robin title, Superman and him had a talk where Superman told him of two legendary kryptonian heroes Nightwing and Flamebird. Inspired by the story, Dick would take on the name of the former (the latter name has a much more varied history).

3. Okay, so what’s the big deal besides the Robin thing?

To compress a lot of history into a paragraph, Nightwing is the one DC hero that like almost every other DC hero trusts and likes. Most of the Justice League has known Dick since he was a little kid and trust him implicitly for both his general good nature and reputation of being like, a really fucking good guy. Like a really good guy. A good enough guy that when Batman was told to let his own world die to let a better more “ideal” world survive, he asked if Richard Grayson was in it to make his choice on if it actually was a better world. (Dick was not in this world, which made Batman hard pass on that shit. Really. This is a thing that happened.)

Dick has also led multiple successful superhero teams, worked on the league himself, and donned the Batman title for awhile.

4. Okay, got it. So what’s going on?

Today DC announced a new six issue limited series in an elseworld (which is a world that takes place outside of canon. Think an AU.) This is the summary:

NIGHTWING: THE NEW ORDER is the story of a future world without “weapons”—where superpowers have been eliminated and outlawed. The man responsible? None other than Dick Grayson, a.k.a. Nightwing, now leader of a government task force called the Crusaders who are charged with hunting the remaining Supers. But when events transpire which turn the Crusaders’ aim toward Grayson’s own family, the former Boy Wonder must turn against the very system he helped create, with help from the very people he’s been hunting for years—the last metahumans of the DC Universe.

5. OH NO IS THIS HYDRA CAP ALL OVER AGAIN?

Yes and no. So far, it’s safe to say that this series does echo Hydra Cap in a paragon for good and justice becoming the figurehead of a fascist regime. However, everything else is kind of more murky.

For one, this series is an elseworld, which means unlike Hydra Cap, it doesn’t take place in the regular DC universe. This is not the fate of the Dick Grayson we know and love, nor is it him; it’s a version of him in a different universe. It’s also a limited run, so we got an enddate on this sucker off the bat.

Second, this is more general fascism instead of nazi brand fascism. The first cover echoes other fascist/oppressive regimes but it applies to multiple besides the Nazi party. In the DC universe, metahumans aren’t coded as a minority group (though smaller subsets are, like the Superfamily being coded Jewish), so it’s more sci-fi than an allegory for real life oppression (though if depending on the details of this event, that remains to be seen. The writer took to Twitter to state there is absolutely no genocide here in this book but the first few pages imply otherwise and long story short, I’m not convinced). The group Dick works with is also entirely new and unlike Hydra has no link in history to the Nazi party, making the claim that they’re a general “evil fascist villain” hold water.

Third, unlike Hydra Cap, this book is branded as Dick learning the error of his choices rather than a long saga to try to convince us he has a point. I doubt we’ll see the same extent of “we should feel bad for Dick oppressing all these people” that we see in Hydra cap. However, this also remains to be seen. Long story short, it’s never gonna try to get us to root for the bad guy.

6. So it’s fine?

Now I wouldn’t say that. Making an iconic character a fascist is still something to side eye, and a lot of my above caveats can change if the story itself decides to make those connections (i.e if there are prison camps for example). It’s also important to note, that making a Romani character a fascist, and one under the label of “crusader” is in terrible taste, considering the Romani people’s history with both.

The writer is also someone I don’t have a ton of faith in when it comes to nuance. (though to his credit, he is assuring and validating concerns on twitter rather than laughing us all off as SJWs).

What I’m saying is that it’s gonna be hard to figure out exactly this is going to play out until I see the first issue. I think the storyline and the advertising is something we should be critical of, but a lot still depends on how the book approaches it. This isn’t to say you should “give it a chance” only that we might want to hold off from saying DC is promoting fascism until we see if they’re gonna take this from a “feel bad for Dick angle, not all fascists are bad” or a “Dick fucked up hard” angle. We can just say this storyline is at the very least insensitive given current events and Dick’s ethnic roots.

Plus, Dick turning on Superman is just weird, and the preview pages are not helping my concerns.

So be critical of the concept but be careful not to declare what the narrative is trying to say until we know what the narrative is.

7. And if it does come out to be “feel bad for Dick, not all fascists, narrative supports the fascist regime for just wanting the best for us” angle?

Then go crazy guys. Though even if it does go that way, it still won’t be as Hydra cap. Because at least it’s still only a elseworld.  Which is like the worst consolation prize ever.

one more thing i wanted to say about jasper today:

“is it sinking in yet? you never… had a chance…”

this moment. this moment here, when she lets amethyst just… whip her as much as she wants. it’s one i never know how to feel about, because it still feels a little ambiguous.

jasper says her line seriously. there’s no sardonic humor to it, no fighting back. she just… takes it quietly, as if she genuinely just wants amethyst to get it.

well, for context’s sake, it may be relevant to note this happened right before:

after that interesting little moment, where amethyst suddenly uses her whip and jasper shows a rare, genuine moment of shock and fear not shown since she saw rose’s shield, she shuts up and plays tough.

she decides to let amethyst wail on her for a while. her following line (bolded above) isn’t really derogatory or attempting to to insult her, like she did before. it’s more “just… accept that you can’t do this”. i think jasper just feels it’s… pointless now.

jasper believes in the concept of moral destiny - either you’re good, and good things will eventually happen to you if you try hard enough, or you’re evil and weak, and you will only fail and suffer until your inevitable end. she’s always been fighting against what she perceives as her own destiny: she failed in the war she was made for. she can either try to fix it, forever, or give up and be a failure who will never avenge her loved ones or find closure. that’s all she thinks about herself, in the end - rebecca sugar told us she hates herself, and that it’s rooted in her origins on earth. she won’t accept help, because she doesn’t think she deserves it.

it may be psycho-analyzing too hard to say that jasper saw something of either her own failure in amethyst, or perhaps her sisters’ fate (well, at least the ones who died + those whose destiny she doesn’t know), but… one complicated part of jasper is that she simultaneously wants to believe in her own redemption (by homeworld’s standards) and that those who suffer were always destined to. in the end, it’s really about convincing herself that her own traumas were because she deserved it, and that’s how she copes.

at the same time, she doesn’t really believe in unnecessary suffering… she wants amethyst to understand that, from jasper’s perspective, she shouldn’t even try. you either win or lose in life, and amethyst has already lost… which isn’t what happens, of course. amethyst has friends, and a life outside her fight, so she was always going to be ok. love saved her - steven and peridot’s love, as well as everyone else, which let her find comfort in steven and form smoky quartz.

but jasper… jasper doesn’t have anyone, and so she lets herself be consumed. all it takes is losing the only thing she’s been living for - the chance to avenge those who died, the chance prove that she’s more than a failure, the chance to consider herself a worthwhile person. so of course she just laughs at herself. she has no one, and she doesn’t think she deserves anyone, either.

maybe her own words are what she’s hearing in her head: “is it sinking in yet? you never had a chance”.

Fabio

Context: the tiefling bard who had been extremely antagonistic to the rest of the party had recently died. The player’s new character, a human paladin, had just joined the party.

Rogue: you know without Fabio here we can–
Barbarian: I don’t want to speak of him anymore
Paladin: who is this Fabio?
Barbarian: *begins ranting about the things Fabio messed up*
Paladin: well I-I mean surely he couldn’t have been that bad.
Barbarian: *continues ranting. Other players join in.*
Paladin(ooc): aww now I’m sad.

I had too much banana milk and I saw this amazing picture of this 80s guy wearing a shirt with this text and holding a cockatoo and all I could think of was maglor… in whatever universe, to me, maglor would be this… the luxury chemise guy

Dont ask me for context, I just wanted to draw silly diamond family doodles, and I srly enjoy drawing White’s grumpy-ass face. Oh look, and her lazy sunday outfit is back! Most likely she’s thinking “Its 4 am and I have a business meeting at 8 in the morning, are you f**** kidding me?”

btw, its around 4 am here too so… *faints* Zzzzzzzzz…

Nazis weren’t socialists.  Just Stop.

Look, I get why you think that.  “National Socialism!  It’s right in the name!”  It’s easy to think that, but I’m here to tell you exactly why you’re wrong.

And it’s a matter of stipulative definitions.  If you don’t know what they are:

If you want a clear example of how they’re used, one such example is the social justice definition of racism, dissected in the link.

They’re definitions that only apply to one very specific context, and Hitler’s usage of the term Socialism was clearly shown to be a stipulative one in a speech on November 16th, 1928.

“We have to strip the terms ‘Nationalism’ and ‘Socialism’ of their previous meaning. Only that man is a nationalist who stands by his people, and only that man is a socialist who stands up for the rights of his people both internally and externally.”

Standing up for the rights of Aryan Germans was, in Nazi Germany, the definition of a socialist in the phrase “National Socialist”.  This was in connection to what he pushed as the “National Community” which was the Aryan version of American Exceptionalism (”we’re better than everyone, we have a right to expand and take what we need, etc.”).  It wasn’t “Nationalism + Socialist”, a mixing of two ideologies.  It was an entirely new ideology.

He would go on to explicitly say that National Socialism “did not lie in socialism as a universal panacea nor was it a nationalist variant of that idea.”

“But what about the economics of Germany?”

He explained the over-arching philosophy of Nazi Germany’s economy as well in a meeting in 1930 with Strauss in Munich.  He was asked in reference to major German corporations like Krupp, ver-batim

“Would everything remain unchanged in terms of ownership, profits and management?”

Hitler’s reply?

“But of course.  Do you think I’m mad enough to destroy the economy?”

He would only step in and seize control of corporations when they worked against what he determined to be “the national interest”.

Which is why, when you rub two brain cells together, Schindler had enough money to save all those Jewish people.  He had political clout and wealth not from being a Party Member (like in soviet russia) but from being a rich businessman who didn’t work against the “national interest”.

Another thing to keep in mind was that Hitler didn’t call socialists “Socialists”.  He labeled them and their movement as “simply marxist(m)”.

He even used socialists and communists as scapegoats and persecuted them.  The Reichstag fire was famously blamed on communists.  He had Goebbels actively prevent socialists from running articles and speeches promoting their ideas.  Socialists were regularly arrested and sent to labor camps. The Night of Long Knives explicitly targeted Socialists and Communists for execution.

dwelling on shit

the phandom is fairly dramaless compared to most other fandoms, and although we do have occasional situations of utter chaos and destruction, the phandom itself is a very friendly, accepting environment. one thing i’d like to address is that we keep making the same mistake:

we totally pressure the shit out of them

2012: “are you gay?” “come out” “phan is real”

2016/17: “get a dog” “get a house” “come out”

over the years we’ve mellowed out a little and dan and phil have been more open with us since then and i love that, but take a look at the last two major dramas the phandom has been through:

2016, dan’s diss track: a considerable amount of people joked that it was his coming out video, people got pissed

2017, isg 9: a considerable amount of people joked that they were disappointed in dan, this was partly due to a miscommunication, but regardless, people got pissed

in both situations:

- jokes were taken to far and were viewed as insults

- people were not aware of how powerful their words were

here are things we should remember going forward:

- be mindful of how your post impacts the situation / where the situation is headed

- you’re gonna get hate for being mad at dan and phil, offer your opinion in a way that states what you didn’t like (”i wasn’t a fan of that video”) rather than being mad at dan and phil for it (”wow, that was dissapointing”)

- calling your best friend a rat is funny because your friend knows its a joke, being called a rat by thousands of strangers online is not so funny, and i know dan and phil can take a joke but in some situations calling them rats is much more serious because of the tension with the context of the situation

anyways, i hope we can grow from this and i hope what i said has taught you something, i can admit that what happened today was a mistake caused by nerves and a misinterpretation, and i hope you all are feeling happier and more cool headed now that the situation has died down a bit

that is all

UPDATED VERSION WITH NEWS ABOUT MY INTERVIEW - First, I must bring something important here : Peridot’s “Wow thanks !!” is one of the most precious things in this world. I have to say it this just makes me fanboy and YES EVEN IN THIS CONTEXT IT NEEDED TO BE DONE like seriously imagine how fucking adorable it would be

THAT BEING SAID - I’m gonna talk about my interview. I was with the actual college’s principal.

I obviously showed my work, and finally my sketchbook because I have some expressions and chara-design I wanted to talk about - and he then started to browse my whole sketchbook saying it was really nice and I was kinda scared for some reasons bUT - he finally came across this one, and stopped turning the pages and he freAKING SMILED

And after looking at everything he said he loved my artstyle, my universe, the way I set my characters, my ideas and how motivated I was - Seriously at these moments I’m the one who wants to scream “WOW THANKS”

He even asked me who were my favorite animators, best way to make me talk for 15 minutes non-stop even though I usually can’t say a word in front of someone :’3

ANYWAY this interview was perfect and there’s a high chance I’ll be able to get to this art college.

ellieintheskywithroxy  asked:

Who even was that guy tho? Like what's your history with him? Why were you on the roof of a motel? Don't just throw us in medias res like that, man, it raises so many questions! Not asking for super personal details here, just some context.

It’s a long story. He was a classmate of mine - complete asshole while sober, dangerously unhinged while inebriated. Rich bastard who thought he was a superior life form because he was a philosophy major. I had organized a weekend trip to Marrakesh with my roommates and our female friends, but one guy invited him along out of pity without informing me, because no one else wanted to spend time around him. I felt responsible for keeping my friends safe and this guy made every woman he met want to crawl out of her own skin to get away from him.

All I could do was make sure no one was ever alone with him, so when my friends climbed onto the roof to drink and smoke the hashish they’d purchased, I was Dad Friending the hell out of them. Machismo got the better of me and I tried to keep pace with their drinking, despite being a much smaller guy, so I wasn’t really in a state to climb down after them when my friends went to bed. I have barely touched alcohol since studying abroad for this reason.

It got Really Weird and at one point, he tried to make me sacrifice him to Athena. That’s enough to prematurely end anyone’s involvement with drinking culture.

maybe i can’t wait for the gifset,

but y’all -

“everything good i did it came from you being my sister. i want you to. have a good life. i want you to find love and be happy and do all the things that being my sister kept you from doing. promise me.- kara danvers (s1 e20)

and

“we just started this, you and me. and it’s not gonna end, not today, not for a long time. we just had our first valentine’s day, i want to do more with you. i want more firsts. i want a first vacation - we haven’t even argued about where we’re gonna go yet or - or how to load the dishwasher, or what to name our first dog. there’s a lifetime of firsts that we’re gonna do together, so you hold on, okay? hold on until i get to you. you promise? promise me.” - maggie sawyer (s2 e19)

i would just like to point out here not just the use of

“promise me”

by the two people alex danvers loves most in the world. but the larger context of what they’re trying to get alex to promise to. because kara is making alex promise to live a full and happy life, and maggie is trying to make alex promise to hang on long enough to give her the full and happy life with all those damn firsts.

and in this moment i am going to temporarily ignore the clusterfuck that has been season two - because these kind of parallels, intentional or not, are what i live for.

like, the two most important people to alex danvers saying these very similar things - echoing each other in times of incredible crisis. echoing the fact that alex deserves happiness and love and joy and they want alex to promise to find it, to live long enough to get it -  i just,

sometimes the show does things right.

idk if someone’s written on this thing before but im p sure someone has bc GODDAMN WHO WOULDNT

I just?? I love the context of the necktie-pull. I love that it’s because Viktor’s attention was caught by the audience and Yuuri wanted to remind him that “hey, you’re here to watch me, remember?” When he says that the performance has begun (and oh boy, look at those bedroom eyes lmfao), it adds emphasis to the fact that for every performance, ever since the first time he skated for Viktor, Yuuri wants Viktor’s eyes to be on him and only him.

ep 3:

[additional thing: someone made translation notes on this, saying that the actual translation is closer to “Please keep your eyes on me and only me.”]

ep 6:

eeyyyy

I love the consistency of it? I love how it evolved- from a hug to clasped hands + forehead-to-forehead contact, to necktie-pulling….god only knows what we’re getting next. Yuuri went from half-shy, still somewhat embarrassed “Watch me, okay?” to 98% confident & sure “Hey, keep your eyes on me, Viktor.” It’s not just an evolution of their relationship- it’s an evolution of Yuuri himself, as he’s getting more and more comfortable in his skin, enough to be able to tell Viktor that hey, you’re my coach and you’re here for me.

i’m just. so damn proud of my boys. SO DAMN PROUD.
