Hunting down the last mermaids.

A painting study that took a very elaborate turn. It’s my first time fitting so many characters in a single composition. The second image you see is how the model posed, versus what I managed to finish painting during the class. I worked on the background between yesterday and today. I still need to work on my textures a little bit but I am overall satisfied with the result.

The process gif skips soooo many steps though lol. I swear I reworked each mermaid like three times, I just couldn’t get their faces to look right no matter how much I tried!

As I was working on this piece I was thinking about fishermen or coastal cities with archaic customs like whaling, or even having to fish illegally because of their dire living conditions. it’s very sad that us, humans, are fishing so many species to extinction because of deeply-rooted traditions, or sheer desperation to keep ourselves and our families alive. It’s a very tough world out there, with no easy solutions in sight.

How many kids do you think Yukimura, Saizo, and Shingen would have?

this is an interesting ask omg

  • Yukimura: I think historically he had at least twelve, but in the context of the game… I’d say he’d have maybe three or four. Most of them are boys and he has one daughter who he spoils the shit out of. He and his sons are always full of so much energy and his wife is grateful that he can wear them out so easily all by himself–they train just as much as he does.
  • Saizo: Mm… Like, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I really have a hard time seeing Saizo with children of his own? I think, if anything, he’s much more comfortable being a guardian-like figure (like with Sasuke, for example). His family life is very estranged, and I think he’s got it so ingrained in himself that he’d hate to see a child grow up in the same world he lives in–I just don’t think he’d ever get around to feeling safe with the idea.
  • Shingen: I believe this fucker also had around twelve (though I think he also had a lot of bastards? I don’t know how many he may or may not have claimed LMAO) in history… I’d say he’d have quite a few in SLBP–at least six, maybe–and they’re all on the older side. Shingen’s been doing this for a while, and I have a hard time thinking he hasn’t had any kids after all this time (though that’s my wishful thinking lol). Actually a fairly good father, and he’s surprisingly rather good at spreading out his time with them–he tries to be as involved as he can, anyway. Spoils his daughters with the finest silks and jewels and for some reason is always getting challenged by his sons (which he finds hilarious).

anonymous asked:

can i just say that i love the way you act like a mom to us and call us your kids? i don't really come from the best family and you and your anons all make me feel like i finally have something even resembling a family for the first time in years. thank you <3

we are a family here, sweet pea.

you are my kids and i love you very much.

anonymous asked:

What kind of wedding do you think the staff would like?

-Finley

This girl want the whole shebang, a huge fancy wedding. Probably Disney themed. It’s elaborate, intricate, and very expensive. Thank god for Jelly Donut merch.

-Hayes

Hayes wants the exact opposite. A small wedding in the woods with only close friends and family. But truly, he just wants his s/o to be happy.

-Mason

She doesn’t Have much of a preference as long as it’s reasonable. (Whoops I don’t think she’s marrying Finley) She lets her fiancé plan it, with occasional input.

-Landry

You bet your bottom britches he’s gonna help build everything he can for this wedding. He will do everything he can to make it everything his s/o wants.

-Graves

The Crypt keeper would love a dark and creepy wedding. A wedding the Addams family would envy. It would take some convincing to bring him from a black color scheme, to a dark grey.

-Reese

he does all the designing. Goes nuts. He will work with you, but won’t hesitate to overwrite occasional details.

hi everyone, sorry for the loooong unplanned absence. i usually don’t post non-sims related text posts, but since i’m still (somehow!) gaining follows, i just want to let you know i’m taking a lil involuntary hiatus.

my new job also came with a new schedule that is basically cutting into any free time i would use to play & be somewhat present on tumblr. i’m still trying to get used to juggling my real life & finding time for my family, unfortunately not leaving me much other time at all.

i’m also trying to move from my current very tiny, bad neighborhood, apartment to something much larger that my boyfriend & i will *hopefully* not struggle to afford. that’s been a huge weight on my personal life & again, not leaving me much time for anything else.

i just wanted to fill you in in case for some odd reason you were wondering :) i will most likely be hiding in the background, trying to keep up with all the beautiful CC everyone has been releasing & staying updated on the packs to come if i am given a chance.

love you all.

Paladins interacting with kids headcanons

I wrote this very impulsively

Shiro:

  • despite being “Space Dad”, he’s surprisingly not very great with kids??
  • he tries but kids just don’t seem to like him???
  • because of this, they stress him out
  • once they’re teenagers it’s ok
  • he’s also fine with babies. he’s very nervous around them, but they don’t do too much so he can handle it
  • (assuming he lives long enough to have them????) he’s really good with his own kids, because he spends so much time raising them an knowing exactly how to interact with them

Lance:

  • HOO BOY BIG BROTHER LANCE
  • he has lots of experience from his family members alone
  • great with kids of all ages
  • he exudes big-brotherly vibes so kids can’t help but gravitate to him
  • they adore him
  • will spoil kids rotten
  • also very comfortable teasing kids, as any big brother should

Hunk:

  • very similar to Lance in that kids love him
  • does not mind becoming a human jungle gym
  • big strong arms for holding many children
  • IMMEDIATELY protective of any kid they encounter
  • they’re his now
  • lay even one finger on them and he will fuck all your shit right up

Keith:

  • surprisingly very easygoing around kids
  • he finds them easy to interact with, especially toddlers-older kids
  • kids like him a lot because he isn’t patronizing and doesn’t talk down to them
  • also because he’s just as likely to do dumb impulsive shit as they are
  • he’s an enabler
  • has a soft spot for kiddos but won’t admit it
  • not really either “big-brother” type or “parental” type, more like “cool babysitter” type

Pidge:

  • is a kid???? ??
  • confused as to why you’d consider her “adult supervision”???
  • she’s used to being the baby so she sometimes feels threatened by any younger presence
  • doesn’t like sharing her stuff
  • doesn’t particularly enjoy being around younger kids but won’t ever be mean/rude to them
  • probably also participating in whatever dumb impulsive shit Keith is doing

“I grew up in a poor neighborhood on the north side of the city. There was a lot of violence. But I didn’t feel the color of my skin very much back then. Even the whites in my neighborhood were poor. We all lived in the same way and everyone seemed equal. My mother always encouraged me to study hard so I could leave the neighborhood. She worked as a maid for a rich family, and she wanted me to live a life like theirs. Eventually I graduated college, got a good job, and moved to a wealthier neighborhood in the south part of the city. I do feel safer— just like I imagined. But I never expected to feel so unwelcome. It can be hard to make friends. I’ve been called names. I’m made to feel the color of my skin more than I ever did growing up.”

(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

the best running theme of Phoenix Wright is that he 100% just rolls with whatever relationship other people decide to have with him. His only girlfriend basically just walked up to him and said “you. we’re dating now and you love me very much” and he was like “yeah okay, lemme know if you have a sweater I can wear to really drive the point home.” The Fey sisters basically grabbed him and said “I guess you’re our brother now” and he was like “yeah sure do you have any family drama I could get involved in?” Even Trucy just sorta told him “hey you’re my dad” and he was like “Mm. Guess I’d better get a job, huh.”

A lot of people apparently think it’s a valid statement when they say that Stiles and Derek hated each other, and I wholeheartedly say, you’re wrong.

I’d like to call this my masterpost for proof that Stiles and Derek did, indeed, care for one another very much. I may not list all, but I will list the ones I find the most notable:

1. Stiles getting in Chris Argent’s face about Kate and what Kate did to Derek and his family. A lot of people look pass this scene, just a mere glance, but it truly caught my attention. I don’t think this has ever been addressed by Stiles before this scene, but in a part of Formality, Chris began questioning Stiles on what he had to do to tame Scott (trying to argue for why werewolves should be taken down) and Stiles brought up the Hale fire and immediately got upset and rather infuriated at what had happened. He knew what Kate did, knew what it did to Derek and it got to him. And that’s what got to me.

2. The iconic pool scene.

Firstly, Derek told Stiles to go protect himself, ready to fight by himself.

Now, of course, Stiles did not listen.

Secondly- wait, do I really need to explain why this scene is so important?

Stiles went back for Derek, who he claimed to hate, and saved him, kept him from drowning. (Totally screwed up his phone in the process but whateves.)

This is still one of the most notable Sterek scenes.

3. Derek saving Stiles from getting killed by Isaac.

4. Derek also protected Stiles from Peter in the hospital scene.

5. This scene.

What really got me about this one is that Stiles wasn’t that close to Boyd. He hardly even knew Boyd, but what he did know was how much Boyd meant to Derek.

What he knew was that Derek needed comfort, and he gave it in the slightest way.

It wasn’t much, just a hand on the shoulder, but he did it. He did it and this scene showed that he cared, that he was there for Derek.

6. Derek trusting Stiles over his own girlfriend.

Not to mention that later on in the episode, when Jennifer stated that she could be the only one to take them to Stiles’ dad, Derek went into full attack mode.

7. Derek being protective over Stiles, ready to chase after him because he knew what Stiles was going to do would be risky.

8. The elevator scene.

Reminder that this scene was an episode after the argument they had, on the same day and possibly an hour apart at most.

What really got me about this scene was the worry on Stiles’ face when he saw Derek laying there. He just stopped all together for a moment before moving in to help.

The evident panic in his voice as he kept on telling Derek to wake up just warmed my heart.

9. Derek was incredibly hesitant in taking Stiles down while the Nogistune had taken over him. He hardly even suggested it.

10. Stiles worrying about Derek in season 4, after he got taken. He even refused to leave without finding Derek.

11. Stiles hesitating to go save his own best friend because Derek was close to dying.

This one scene basically saved season 4. This one scene broadcasted just how much Stiles truly cares for Derek.

Guys, he hesitated to save his own best friend. Understand how major that is.

Stiles only left when Derek told him to go, demanded it, and even than he still wasn’t sure and looked back once more before going.

This scene was so significant, probably the most significant Sterek scene ever.

12. Everyone looking at Stiles before Derek left.

This may not seem like a big deal, but I take this as his friends understanding just how much Derek means to him. He had to watch Derek walk away and I feel like they got it, it just clicked.

13. Stiles smiling at Derek’s initials.

The fact that something as simple as Derek’s initials had Stiles stopping just to smile really means something.

And if that wasn’t enough to prove how much he missed Derek, remember the following episode when Scott brought Derek up?

Stiles’ pause and the look on his face and the look on Scott’s face like he knew something, knew that Derek meant more to Stiles than Stiles was saying.

14. Stiles is Derek’s anchor.

Anchor. Anchor.

This is important.

An anchor being someone you feel safe and secure around, someone who can pull you back, someone meaningful.

Stiles was that for Derek, and if that’s not enough to prove just how much Derek cares for and appreciates Stiles, I don’t know what is.

In conclusion, you can say whatever you want about Sterek but do not deny how important they were to each other. It’s ridiculous and not even an argument. In the beginning, they probably hated each other but now? You’re only playing yourself if you’re really trying to argue that they mean nothing to each other.

our little family pt.1 | park jimin

Pairing: Father! Jimin + Reader

Genre: Fluff/Angst + parent au

Word Count: 2.8k

Summary: You were just a pre-school teacher, a simple dream that came true as you always adored children. But what you didn’t know, was how one child and her very special father would change you dream forever.

Parts: 1 2

“Jieun-ah, please.” Jimin sighed, as he tried putting her arms through the sleeves of her baby pink coat, which she shrugged back off again for the nth time making Jimin let out a soft groan in exasperation.

“Jieun-ah…” Jimin pleaded.

“I don’t want to go to school daddy.” Jieun said softly, pouting as she looked at her dad with round eyes, the corners watering slightly as Jimin felt his resolve weaken at the sight of his daughter before him.

Sighing, he grabbed her hands and put on a large grin, “Jieun-ah, It’ll be fun!” he tried cheering, “Daddy had loved going to school all his life (what a lie) and really wished he could go again.”

“Then why don’t you come with me?” Jieun asked, tugging at the ends of her little pale blue sundress, the color contrasting strongly against her raven blank hair that tumbled around her shoulders in soft curls.

Cradling her face in his hands, her cheeks squishing up together making Jimin chuckle slightly, he said, “Daddy’s too old now, but if anything happens I’ll be there for you, alright? Do you wanna go now? I promise it’ll be great.”

“Pinky promise?” Jieun asked, holding out her pinky to Jimin’s face as he laughed a little, hooking her tiny pinky within his and bringing them together before pressing a small kiss to her hands, “I promise baby.”

“Hi guys!! Welcome! Hello!” you smiled happily as the kids walked one by one into your class, all their faces with expressions that varied, some happy, some mad, some scared and some with tears and snot dripping from their little noses.

Oh children.

“There you go Jieun-ah, I’ll pick you up in a couple hours okay?”

ARMY! Thank you so much. This is an award that we have been waiting for a long time and have been wanting to receive ever since. Receiving such an important award for the 4th quarter on such a good day like today, I want to say thank you and I love you the most to ARMYs. We had a concert not long ago. Every time we have a concert, we always spend 20-30 minutes before performing to meditate and talk among our members. There’s something we talked about during that time. We have entered our 5th year and received many invitations from year-end award ceremonies, but we are not allowed to feel that of course we will be invited to year-end award shows, of course many people will come to our concerts, of course many people will listen to our albums. Actually we always think it’s a miracle being invited to such honorable award ceremonies and having someone come to our concerts, buy and listen to our albums. Thank you a lot. And I’d like to, I have to say thank you for all the ARMYs all over the world. We have been waiting for this for a very long time and today we have a good news about the Billboard chart. Thanh you very much. And I’d like to say just remember that we never walk alone. Let’s walk together forever and ever. Thank you very much.

Sincerely thank you to everyone for giving us this big award. There’s something we want to say as we stand in a great place like this. We think it’s thanks to many people’s effort that we can be in front of you guys looking good like this. I want to say thank you to our Bighit family who help us, our hair & makeup stylists and manager hyungs. Thank you very much and our ARMYs, you would know it even if we don’t say but we are always grateful and love you a lot.

And our parents who gave birth to us, Bang Shihyuk PD-nim, Vice President Choi Yoojung, Director Shinkyu, Director Yoon Seokjoon, we love you a lot, thank you for raising BTS. And of course our ARMYs, thank you and I love you.
—  Rap Monster & Jimin & V, Artist Of The Year - Physical Category - 4th Quarter, 2016 Gaon Music Chart Awards

I’ve spent some time lately trying to figure out why, exactly, it always rings false to me when people call Viktor a “playboy.” And I think I figured it out:

Viktor Nikiforov believes in love.

Viktor is definitely presented as a playboy. That’s not the problem: he has millions of male and female fans who literally swoon over him, he’s noted for being “free with his charms,” is called “the world’s hottest bachelor,” and his initial behavior with Yuuri is very forward, physical, and flirtatious. Even seven episodes of character growth in, his initial reaction to comfort Yuuri is kissing him.

So it’s not that Viktor doesn’t have the groundwork laid for this interpretation.

Most “playboy” archetypes fall into this pattern of having been hurt in the pat by someone—a parent, a friend, usually a former lover—and they are now jaded and no longer believe in love. The love interest is there to facilitate the playboy’s growth by being warm and loving and caring and everything the playboy needs and convince them that love doesn’t have to hurt. The playboy’s character arc takes them through this long trial in which their love interest is used as free emotional labor and an emotional punching bag while the playboy works out his personal issues.

While we have basically no backstory on Viktor, he doesn’t appear to have been hurt like this in the past. He’s just a sad, lonely man with major depressive disorder and no friends or family, apparently. Which, as my brother pointed out when I made this argument to him, doesn’t sound very much like a playboy.

As soon as he meets Yuuri at the banquet and realizes, “I could fall in love with this man,” he chases it with everything he has. He already knows how much he wants and needs love and how much good it could do him. He’s not running away from affection, he’s running full-tilt toward it.

Which neatly averts any “using Yuuri as an emotional punching bag,” and for that I will be forever grateful.

'Meet BTS, the K-Pop Group Loved By Wale and Charlie Puth'

Teen Vogue: How did you feel about landing in the U.S. iTunes Top 10 in February?

Rap Monster: Reaching the top of any music chart is a thrill, but this was a shock. We were on [a strict TV appearance] schedule at that time, so it wasn’t like I could scream or anything (laughs).

Jin: It was ‘Wow. Are you serious? Really?’ It was similar to what I thought when I first heard that Wings charted at 26 on the Billboard 200 last year. How cool is that!

Teen Vogue: For those new to BTS, what song and which video should they check out?

RM: Hmmm, it’s like choosing between your mom and your dad, who do you like better! “Fire” was loved by so many, so that’s the song.

Jin: I’d recommend “Blood Sweat & Tears” because I got the lead role and I kind of lead the whole story of video! And, of course, it’s beautifully designed and choreographed.

V: I, too, think it’s “Blood Sweat & Tears.” It had so many metaphors and I had to make a lot of guesses to understand the relationship between characters. And there’s a scene where I make a strange smile to give you a chill, which I love!

Teen Vogue: Rap Monster, K-Pop groups usually have designated roles for the members and yours is BTS’s leader, but what does that mean to you?

RM: It’s my official role to represent BTS to the world and it’s been a chance for me to mature as a person, but, behind the scenes, I’m just one of seven members and I’m inspired by the others all the time. I get free life lessons from J-Hope and Jimin, sometimes it’s like they’re 10 years older than me.

Teen Vogue: OK, let’s play a little game. You’re now at the mercy of another member describing you.

Jungkook: Jin used to be an ordinary guy in the team, but he’s the mood maker now. He’s the most wicked and funniest of all. No one in BTS is normal though, come to think of it.

Jin: Jungkook’s delicate voice always mesmerizes our ears and that’s definitely his role in BTS.

V: Jimin is a real piece of cuteness, like the youngest in the family.

Jimin: V’s specialty is getting all the attention from others onto him!

J-Hope: Suga is a true caretaker. He’s kind of a hidden leader who takes care of everyone.

Suga: J-Hope’s a real hope-maker. He’s such a ‘hope-generator.’

Teen Vogue: BTS have become highly respected for penning their own tracks. When you’re on tour, do you make time to write?

RM: Mostly we’re in the hotel when we’re not on [our promotional] schedule so I bring all my equipment. I wake up, if I have a rehearsal, I go do that and when I come back to the hotel, I sit down and turn on the laptop, cause I’ve got nothing to do without that!

Teen Vogue: When you’ve got a new demo, such as the rough guide to Wings, do you take it to another member and play it and ask for feedback?

Suga: I usually have as many people listen to it as possible because I think it really helps make it a better track. I always get great feedback from the rest of the band.

RM: Firstly, I take it to (BTS’s executive producer) P.Dogg. If he likes it, he sometimes puts it into the album. I really trust him, he’s got the eye for it.

Teen Vogue: If P.Dogg says no, will you fight for it?

RM: Yeah, of course, I really fight for it! I’m like, ‘Hey, this is the thing I gotta do right now. If you won’t do it, I’ll put it into my mixtape!’ The last one I fought for was ‘Reflection’ — there’s an original version, a whole different song. He didn’t not like it, it just didn’t fit the Wings concept, so I’ll release it myself someday.

Suga: I think I kind of did for my mixtape, because I felt I should as AgustD [my solo moniker], and I’m glad I did.

Teen Vogue: Speaking of mixtapes, J-Hope, we’ve been looking forward to hearing yours. What can you tell us about it?

J-Hope: I’m working on it as we speak and my inspiration really depends on my daily mood swing; sometimes I like to go strong and sometimes I make softer sounds. Since it’s a mixtape, I’m trying to experiment with various genres to test myself.

Teen Vogue: Jungkook, you recently covered Charlie Puth’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore” — you teased it in January but didn’t release it until the end of February. Were you making changes? And will we hear your own songwriting any time soon?

Jungkook: I recorded it several times until I was sure that it felt and sounded perfect. I was more than ready to share it because I knew fans had been waiting, but we had You Never Walk Alone being released and I thought I’d better wait until BTS wraps up the official activities for it. I don’t feel confident about writing any of my own [material] yet, but if I ever write a song, I’d like to work on a very soft and sweet vibe.

Teen Vogue: The bigger an artist gets, the more people will try and bring them down. How does BTS deal with that side of fame?

Jimin: I’m a very positive person and I don’t easily get intimidated by people who try to bring me or BTS down. Besides, my family is always there for me.

RM: These days, I try to take everything as my fate and respond with dignity. I accept it, it’s like a shadow, it’s just there.

J-Hope: I had a firm belief that I was going to be a successful artist, and that led me to what I am. I draw all the strength I need from that belief and try to share my energy with other members as much as I can.

Teen Vogue: Rap Monster, you’ve just released a collaboration with rapper Wale, which came about through a BTS fan helping bring you guys together over Twitter. What can you tell us about working together?

RM: When he suggested the collaboration, that was a real shock. I thought about it, [and was] like, should we do a party song? But I wanted to do something different. The title is “Change” — in America. They’ve got their situations and we’ve got ours in Seoul, the problems are everywhere and the song is like a prayer for change. He talks about the police, and problems he’s faced since he was a child. For me, I talked about Korea, my problems, and about those on Twitter who kill people by keyboards.

Teen Vogue: Let’s do a finishing quickfire round! BTS experiments with a lot of genres, which one has been a challenge?

V: I always find rock difficult.

RM: I’m always ready to be challenged, like, “Wings: Outro,” it was hip-house, that was the first time I’d ever listened to that genre… but I liked it.

Teen Vogue: What do you want do while you’re in America?

RM: I want to go to Barneys and Supreme! I want to see buildings and people on the street, their faces, what they talk about, how they walk. I do that in Korea. I go to somewhere I haven’t been and just watch people and colors, that’s my inspiration.

Jimin: I really want to go on a day trip with the members. Or a picnic to Central Park on a sunny day would be nice.

Real talk

Does Lin-Manuel Miranda know how much hope he has given so many people with Hamilton? I mean, I can’t speak for anyone else, but my family isn’t very well off. I never thought I would go anywhere, despite my good grades or passion or detemination, I knew that my parents just did not have enough money to send me to my college of choice.
Then Hamilton came along.
Hamilton, as you all know, is the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton. Our buddy Hamilton was also hella not rich, just like me!!! But he was so persistent and he was so eloquent and he achieved so much even if he didn’t have the money to do so!!! Like!!! Buddy!!! I can also do that!!! I can make a difference!!! I can go to whatever the fuck college I want to!!! Thank you, Mr. Miranda, for writing something that gave this determined cinnamon roll hope!!!

Mixed Black African Girl (Cameroonian/French)

I’m a mixed black african girl who grew up and lived most of her life in Cameroon, in Central Africa. My dad is half-white (french) and half-black (cameroonian), and my mom is 100% cameroonian. There’s little to no black african characters in popular fiction, which has always bothered me, and it would be so nice to read about someone like me for once.

  • Culture and food

Cameroon is a country created during colonization, with borders defined by europeans. Because of that, Cameroon is actually made of 200 ethnic groups, each of them having their own language and culture. So the culture and daily habits vary a lot depending on which region of Cameroon you are in. In the big cities, though, everyone is mingled no matter where they’re from. However, so many different ethnic groups cohabiting together often causes tension. There are also a lot of stereotypes about every ethnic group.

I grew up in the central and coastal areas of the country, and I’m Bassa. The Bassa are one of the main ethnic groups in Cameroon. If your parents are from two different ethnic groups, it is decided that you officially belong to your father’s ethnic group. My mother is Bakoko but my father is Bassa, so I’m the latter. When I meet another Cameroonian, two of the first questions we usually ask each other are : What are you (meaning, what’s your ethnic group) ? and Where is you village ?

Villages are very important in the Cameroonian culture. Your village is where your father’s ancestors were born. Even if you’re not born there, you usually have grandparents or great-uncles or family friends living there, and if you have enough money to do so you must regularly visit your village. And usually, when people earn enough money, they send money to their village so that people living there can have a better life, build more houses and schools etc.

Cameroonian food is very diverse, and varies depending on the region. The national dish is Ndolé, a dish made with ndolé leaves, stewed nuts, and meat (fish, beef or shrimps). Other common foods are bobolo and miondo (food made out of fermented manioc), soya (spicy grilled meat on skewers), and plantain. My dad is half-french though, so at home we eat almost as much french food as cameroonian food (crème brûlée, shepherd’s pie, beef bourguignon, A LOT of bread and cheese).

  • Language

There are hundreds of different languages, but the official languages are French and English. Cameroon was colonized by France and England so Northern Cameroon mainly speaks english and central/southern Cameroon mainly speaks french. Most people also speak their ethnic group’s language. I don’t know how to speak Bassa, though, because neither do my parents. When me and my siblings were kids, our dad asked our baby-sitter to teach us, but she could only do so much and I only remember a few words.

  • Beauty Standards

Like most countries, there is a lot of colorism in Cameroon based on European beauty standards. When you’re a woman, the lighter you are, the prettier and more desirable you are considered. Dark skinned women are often mocked and considered not as pretty. A lot of people, mainly women but also men, use dangerous products to lighten their skin. Internalized racism and white beauty standards are very insidious, and a lot of people want to look like white people, including me when I was younger. As a kid I remember wishing i was a pretty blonde-haired blue-eyed white girl like the heroines of the books i was reading. Growing up I stopped wishing that, but I relaxed and straightened my hair a lot, wanting to have long straight hair without realizing that it was still an attempt to look like the ideal version of a white girl. I’m sure that if I had more black female characters to relate to when I was growing up, I wouldn’t have spend so many years hating myself without even realizing I was doing it.

Also, Cameroonians usually consider thick, curvy women to be the ideal beauty standard. But being thin is still an ideal broadcast by the media (especially that american and european media are heavily broadcast and consumed in Cameroon) so most women still diet a lot and go to the gym to lose weight.

  • Clothing

Women wear a lot of skirts and dresses, be it casual or for work. Most cameroonian schools have uniforms and mandatory hairstyles (either cornrows or short shaved hair).

Elderly people often wear more traditional clothes and outfits. The most prominent traditional item of clothing is the Kaba. The Kaba is a long dress made of wax fabric and other materials and is owned by pretty much every woman. The dress looks different depending on the situation : the Kaba you wear when you stay at home is usually very long and very loose, the Kaba you wear during official/formal events is more tight-fitting and stylized, etc.

  • Dating and Relationships

I’ve never dated anyone, but when I was in high school none of my friends ever told their parents they were seeing someone. Having your parents know about and meet the person you’re dating after only a few weeks or months is something that just doesn’t happen (unless someone gets pregnant). It’s when things get serious that you introduce them to your family. Also, a lot of parents would prefer their children to marry someone from the same ethnic group.

Homosexuality is still illegal there, and you can go to jail for being gay.

  • Home/Family life

My parents are still happily married, and I have 3 siblings. My parents are both close to their siblings, and I’m close to mine. Me and my siblings grew up with our cousins, we were always at each other’s houses. I pretty much consider most of my cousins as extra siblings. We have a very big extended family and every day I discover new distant cousins, aunts, great-uncles etc. My dad being half-french, when I was growing up we sometimes went to France during summer to visit his relatives living there.

In Cameroon, most people who have enough money to do so send their children to study abroad once they’ve graduated high school. I’m currently living in France for my studies, and most of my high school friends are also going to college in France, England, Canada, Brussels, South Africa etc.

  • Identity issues

Despite being only ¼ white, I’m very light-skinned. My siblings being much darker skinned, when I was a kid I thought I was adopted (i’m not, it’s just genetics). Cameroon being a black country, when someone is visibly mixed and light-skinned as i am, most people just label them “white”. A lot of people would refer to me as “the white” and it always really hurt me. My family wouldn’t understand why i was so angry and hurt, they’d say “they don’t mean anything by it, it’s just that you’re light” but the fact is it made me feel like i don’t belong. I’m cameroonian, i’ve lived in Cameroon almost my entire life, i’m black, and still some people see me as “other”, they see me as white. And so for a long time, I didn’t dare to call myself black, I’d say “I’m biracial” or “I’m mixed” instead because I somehow felt like a fraud. But I’m black and not white-passing at all, and I still experience racism abroad (but I’m aware I have a lot more privilege than dark skinned people).

  • Daily struggles

So I’m currently living in France. On one hand, sometimes white people are racist toward me, or just totally obnoxious and ignorant, trying to touch my natural hair and thinking that people in Cameroon don’t have computers or whatever. On the other hand, when I randomly meet other cameroonians and we start talking, they always assume that because i’m mixed i’ve lived my entire life in France and i don’t know anything about Cameroon. And there’s nothing wrong with being a child of immigrants and not knowing the country your parents or grandparents came from, but i know that if i wasn’t visibly mixed they wouldn’t question the fact that i know Cameroon and lived there my entire life.

  • Misconceptions

Because of how the media depict African countries, a lot of people think that everyone in Africa is extremely poor and starving, that we don’t have electricity and internet and that everyone lives in huts. Which is so false. We have rich people and poor people, we have huge modern cities and regular cities and small villages with huts, almost everyone has access to a tv and internet, etc.

  • Things I’d like to see less of

Cameroon and other african countries being depicted as poor unfortunate countries where everyone is starving and illiterate and waiting for the generous white people to save us. What we need is for people to see us as the humans we are, and to allow us to grow in peace.

  • Things I’d like to see more of

Black african characters being written as the complex human beings we are. Shy black african characters. Nerdy and hella smart black african characters. Mixed black african characters who struggle with their identity. LGBTQ black african characters.

  • Tropes/Stereotypes I’m tired of seeing.

The “savage”, “uncivilized” african. African characters who are aggressive, dumb and shout all the time. The poor africans in need of saving by white people.

Okay so my theory is that Elena and Damon both died at the same time, like in The Notebook. They’re walking into this peace world together, and then I think Elena finds peace, which is why Damon disappeared, and very soon after (maybe at the same time again) Damon finds peace. When Damon found peace, he found himself at the Salvatore boarding house to see Stefan. I think that it’s all connected. I like to believe that they all get to see each other.

Elena and Damon don’t separate even in the afterlife. I imagine that Damon, Stefan, Lexi, Elena, Miranda, Jenna, Grayson, and John all sit together and talk about their lives and adventures. At first I think Grayson might be hesitant about Damon, Stefan, and Lexi considering they were vampires, but after learning that Elena became a vampire, and their adventures and how the Salvatore brothers helped her, he becomes more open and inviting to his son-in-law and his brother and his brother’s best friend. Even John who didn’t like Damon very much warms up to him.

I think they sit around, eat, tell stories, and do everything that should’ve happened if Grayson, Miranda, John, Jenna, Stefan, and Lexi didn’t die. Just be a family. I like to think that Damon and Elena tells stories about their kids. They had 2 kids: one boy, and one girl. They named them Stefan and Miranda.

Okay but can we take a moment to talk about how truly traumatic Leorio’s past really is? Like, I know we all talk about how terrible the other three’s childhoods are:

Killua living with a physically and emotionally abusive family, Gon with his father abandoning him, Kurapika’s clan being killed.

But I think we tend to forget that Leorio had just as much of a tragic background as the others. He watched his friend die. Right before his very eyes.

And then that hard reality sets on him; he could have survived if they had money for medicine. It was an entirely curable sickness. But all he could do was watch as his friend collapsed. And let’s just think for a moment; Leorio lived in such an impoverished area, there were probably bound to be other people he knew who suffered from the same sickness or a different illness that could have been saved from that miraculous money antidote.

So Leorio could have seen far more death in the course of his childhood that we may not even know about.

This becomes even more of a pressing issue for Leorio, especially concerning Gon. Because seeing Gon just laying there, practically charred skin and bone wrapped up in medical tape, physically and emotionally kills Leorio. Not just because it’s Gon and he feels so connected and attached to Gon, but because it brings back those memories. Of when he couldn’t do anything but watch someone die. And he thinks “Not again. I will not stand by and watch someone die again. I will find some way to heal Gon. I will invest every single piece of fame, fortune and time to bring Gon back.”

And when Gon enters  through that door in the middle of the election, Leorio is so happy; so overwhelmed to see Gon alive and well. He’s so, so ecstatic that for once,

someone was finally saved.

luluherondale  asked:

Hi, Cassie! I'm from Brazil and we love you so much here! Your books are very important for me. Well, I was wondering... the characters of TLH, the young ones, do they know each other? They act like a huge family or just... know each other names? It's a little weird: I badly know them, but I already love them. Kisses from Brazil!

The characters of The Last Hours are in general extremely close. Some are obviously closer than others (Matthew and James are parabatai, and they’re also unbreakable friends with Christopher and Thomas; Lucie and Cordelia are BFF) Anna, Alastair and Charles are a little older than the others, so sometimes take big-brother/big-sister roles with them; little Alex is only three and doesn’t get out much — but in general I’d say they’re a tight-knit group who’ve grown up together. The only exception might be the Blackthorns, who have grown up in Idris (well, Jesse hasn’t exactly “grown up’ at all) and are fairly separated from the others.
