Dead Fandoms, Part 3

Read Part One of Dead Fandoms here.

Read Part Two of Dead Fandoms here.

Before we continue, I want to add the usual caveat that I actually don’t want to be right about these fandoms being dead. I like enthusiasm and energy and it’s a shame to see it vanish.

Mists of Avalon

Remember that period of time of about 15 years, where absolutely everybody read this book and was obsessed with it? It could not have been bigger, and the fandom was Anne Rice huge, overlapping for several years with USENET and the early World Wide Web…but it’s since petered out.

Mists of Avalon’s popularity may be due to the most excellent case of hitting a demographic sweet spot ever. The book was a feminist retelling of the Arthurian Mythos where Morgan Le Fay is the main character, a pagan from matriarchal goddess religions who is fighting against encroaching Christianity and patriarchal forms of society coming in with it. Also, it made Lancelot bisexual and his conflict is how torn he is about his attraction to both Arthur and Guinevere.

Remember, this novel came out in 1983 – talk about being ahead of your time! If it came out today, the reaction from a certain corner would be something like “it is with a heavy heart that I inform you that tumblr is at it again.”

Man, demographically speaking, that’s called “nailing it.” It used to be one of the favorite books of the kind of person who’s bookshelf is dominated by fantasy novels about outspoken, fiery-tongued redheaded women, who dream of someday moving to Scotland, who love Enya music and Kate Bush, who sell homemade needlepoint stuff on etsy, who consider their religious beliefs neo-pagan or wicca, and who have like 15 cats, three of which are named Isis, Hypatia, and Morrigan.

This type of person is still with us, so why did this novel fade in popularity? There’s actually a single hideous reason: after her death around 2001, facts came out that Marion Zimmer Bradley abused her daughters sexually. Even when she was alive, she was known for defending and enabling a known child abuser, her husband, Walter Breen. To say people see your work differently after something like this is an understatement – especially if your identity is built around being a progressive and feminist author.

Robotech

I try to break up my sections on dead fandoms into three parts: first, I explain the property, then explain why it found a devoted audience, and finally, I explain why that fan devotion and community went away. Well, in the case of Robotech, I can do all three with a single sentence: it was the first boy pilot/giant robot Japanimation series that shot for an older, teenage audience to be widely released in the West. Robotech found an audience when it was the only true anime to be widely available, and lost it when became just another import anime show. In the days of Crunchyroll, it’s really hard to explain what made Robotech so special, because it means describing a different world.

Try to imagine what it was like in 1986 for Japanime fans: there were barely any video imports, and if you wanted a series, you usually had to trade tapes at your local basement club (they were so precious they couldn’t even be sold, only traded). If you were lucky, you were given a script to translate what you were watching. Robotech though, was on every day, usually after school. You want an action figure? Well, you could buy a Robotech Valkyrie or a Minmei figure at your local corner FAO Schwartz.

However, the very strategy that led to it getting syndicated is the very reason it was later vilified by the purists who emerged when anime became a widespread cultural force: strictly speaking, there actually is no show called “Robotech.” Since Japanese shows tend to be short run, say, 50-60 episodes, it fell well under the 80-100 episode mark needed for syndication in the US. The producer of Harmony Gold, Carl Macek, had a solution: he’d cut three unrelated but similar looking series together into one, called “Robotech.” The shows looked very similar, had similar love triangles, used similar tropes, and even had little references to each other, so the fit was natural. It led to Robotech becoming a weekday afternoon staple with a strong fandom who called themselves “Protoculture Addicts.” There were conventions entirely devoted to Robotech. The supposed shower scene where Minmei was bare-breasted was the barely whispered stuff of pervert legend in pre-internet days. And the tie in novels, written with the entirely western/Harmony Gold conception of the series and which continued the story, were actually surprisingly readable.

The final nail in the coffin of Robotech fandom was the rise of Sailor Moon, Toonami, Dragonball, and yes, Pokemon (like MC Hammer’s role in popularizing hip hop, Pokemon is often written out of its role in creating an audience for the next wave of cartoon imports out of insecurity). Anime popularity in the West can be defined as not a continuing unbroken chain like scifi book fandom is, but as an unrelated series of waves, like multiple ancient ruins buried on top of each other (Robotech was the vanguard of the third wave, as Anime historians reckon); Robotech’s wave was subsumed by the next, which had different priorities and different “core texts.” Pikachu did what the Zentraedi and Invid couldn’t do: they destroyed the SDF-1.

Legion of Super-Heroes

Legion of Superheroes was comic set in the distant future that combined superheroes with space opera, with a visual aesthetic that can best be described as “Star Trek: the Motion Picture, if it was set in a disco.”

I’ve heard wrestling described as “a soap opera for men.” If that’s the case, then Legion of Super-Heroes was a soap opera for nerds. The book is about attractive 20-somethings who seem to hook up all the time. As a result, it had a large female fanbase, which, I cannot stress enough, is incredibly unusual for this era in comics history. And if you have female fans, you get a lot of shipping and slashfic, and lots of speculation over which of the boy characters in the series is gay. The fanon answer is Element Lad, because he wore magenta-pink and never had a girlfriend. (Can’t argue with bulletproof logic like that.) In other words, it was a 1970s-80s fandom that felt much more “modern” than the more right-brained, bloodless, often anal scifi fandoms that existed around the same time, where letters pages were just nitpicking science errors by model train and elevator enthusiasts.

Legion Headquarters seemed to be a rabbit fuck den built around a supercomputer and Danger Room. Cosmic Boy dressed like Tim Curry in Rocky Horror. There’s one member, Duo Damsel, who can turn into two people, a power that, in the words of Legion writer Jim Shooter, was “useful for weird sex…and not much else.”

LSH was popular because the fans were insanely horny. This is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, the thirstiest fandom of all time.  You might think I’m overselling this, but I really think that’s an under-analyzed part of how some kinds of fiction build a devoted fanbase.

For example, a big reason for the success of Mass Effect is that everyone has a favorite girl or boy, and you have the option to romance them. Likewise, everyone who was a fan of Legion remembers having a crush. Sardonic Ultra Boy for some reason was a favorite among gay male nerds (aka the Robert Conrad Effect). Tall, blonde, amazonian telepath Saturn Girl, maybe the first female team leader in comics history, is for the guys with backbone who prefer Veronica over Betty. Shrinking Violet was a cute Audrey Hepburn type. And don’t forget Shadow Lass, who was a blue skinned alien babe with pointed ears and is heavily implied to have an accent (she was Aayla Secura before Aayla Secura was Aayla Secura). Light Lass was commonly believed to be “coded lesbian” because of a short haircut and her relationships with men didn’t work out. The point is, it’s one thing to read about the adventures of a superteam, and it implies a totally different level of mental and emotional involvement to read the adventures of your imaginary girlfriend/boyfriend.

Now, I should point out that of all the fandoms I’ve examined here, LSH was maybe the smallest. Legion was never a top seller, but it was a favorite of the most devoted of fans who kept it alive all through the seventies and eighties with an energy and intensity disproportionate to their actual numbers. My gosh, were LSH fans devoted! Interlac and Legion Outpost were two Legion fanzines that are some of the most famous fanzines in comics history.

If nerd culture fandoms were drugs, Star Wars would be alcohol, Doctor Who would be weed, but Legion of Super-Heroes would be injecting heroin directly into your eyeballs. Maybe it is because the Legionnaires were nerdy, too: they played Dungeons and Dragons in their off time (an escape, no doubt, from their humdrum, mundane lives as galaxy-rescuing superheroes). There were sometimes call outs to Monty Python. Basically, the whole thing had a feel like the dorkily earnest skits or filk-singing at a con. Legion felt like it’s own fan series, guest starring Patton Oswalt and Felicia Day.

It helped that the boundary between fandom and professional was incredibly porous. For instance, pro-artist Dave Cockrum did covers for Legion fanzines. Former Legion APA members Todd and Mary Biernbaum got a chance to actually write Legion, where, with the gusto of former slashfic writers given the keys to canon, their major contribution was a subplot that explicitly made Element Lad gay. Mike Grell, a professional artist who got paid to work on the series, did vaguely porno-ish fan art. Again, it’s hard to tell where the pros started and the fandom ended; the inmates were running the asylum.

Mostly, Legion earned this devotion because it could reward it in a way no other comic could. Because Legion was not a wide market comic but was bought by a core audience, after a point, there were no self-contained one-and-done Legion stories. In fact, there weren’t even really arcs as we know it, which is why Legion always has problems getting reprinted in trade form. Legion was plotted like a daytime soap opera: there were always five different stories going on in every issue, and a comic involved cutting between them. Sure, like daytime soap operas, there’s never a beginning, just endless middles, so it was totally impossible for a newbie to jump on board…but soap operas know what they are doing: long term storytelling rewards a long term reader.

This brings me to today, where Legion is no longer being published by DC. There is no discussion about a movie or TV revival. This is amazing. Comics are a world where the tiniest nerd groups get pandered to: Micronauts, Weirdworld, Seeker 3000, and Rom have had revival series, for pete’s sake. It’s incredible there’s no discussion of a film or TV treatment, either; friggin Cyborg from New Teen Titans is getting a solo movie.

Why did Legion stop being such a big deal? Where did the fandom that supported it dissolve to? One word: X-Men. Legion was incredibly ahead of its time. In the 60s and 70s, there were barely any “fan” comics, since superhero comics were like animation is today: mostly aimed at kids, with a minority of discerning adult/teen fans, and it was success among kids, not fans, that led to something being a top seller (hence, “fan favorites” in the 1970s, as surprising as it is to us today, often did not get a lot of work, like Don MacGregor or Barry Smith). But as newsstands started to push comics out, the fan audience started to get bigger and more important…everyone else started to catch up to the things that made Legion unique: most comics started to have attractive people who paired up into couples and/or love triangles, and featured extremely byzantine long term storytelling. If Legion of Super-Heroes is going to be remembered for anything, it’s for being the smaller scale “John the Baptist” to the phenomenon of X-Men, the ultimate “fan” comic.

The other thing that killed Legion, apart from Marvel’s Merry Mutants, that is, was the r-word: reboots. A reboot only works for some properties, but not others. You reboot something when you want to find something for a mass audience to respond to, like with Zorro, Batman, or Godzilla.

Legion, though, was not a comic for everybody, it was a fanboy/girl comic beloved by a niche who read it for continuing stories and minutiae (and to jack off, and in some cases, jill off). Rebooting a comic like that is a bad idea. You do not reboot something where the main way you engage with the property, the greatest strength, is the accumulated lore and history. Rebooting a property like that means losing the reason people like it, and unless it’s something with a wide audience, you only lose fans and won’t get anything in return for it. So for something like Legion (small fandom obsessed with long form plots and details, but unlike Trek, no name recognition) a reboot is the ultimate Achilles heel that shatters everything, a self-destruct button they kept hitting over and over and over until there was nothing at all left.

E. E. Smith’s Lensman Novels

The Lensman series is like Gil Evans’s jazz: it’s your grandparents’ favorite thing that you’ve never heard of.

I mean, have you ever wondered exactly what scifi fandom talked about before the rise of the major core texts and cultural objects (Star Trek, Asimov, etc)? Well, it was this. Lensmen was the subject of fanfiction mailed in manilla envelopes during the 30s, 40s, and 50s (some of which are still around). If you’re from Boston, you might recognize that the two biggest and oldest scifi cons there going back to the 1940s, Boskone (Boscon, get it?) and Arisia, are references to the Lensman series. This series not only created space opera as we know it, but contributed two of the biggest visuals in scifi, the interstellar police drawn from different alien species, and space marines in power armor.

My favorite sign of how big this series was and how fans responded to it, was a great wedding held at Worldcon that duplicated Kimball Kinnison and Clarissa’s wedding on Klovia. This is adorable:

The basic story is pure good vs. evil: galactic civilization faces a crime and piracy wave of unprecedented proportions from technologically advanced pirates (the memory of Prohibition, where criminals had superior firearms and faster cars than the cops, was strong by the mid-1930s). A young officer, Kimball Kinnison (who speaks in a Stan Lee esque style of dialogue known as “mid-century American wiseass”), graduates the academy and is granted a Lens, an object from an ancient mystery civilization, who’s true purpose is unknown.

Lensman Kinnison discovers that the “crime wave” is actually a hostile invasion and assault by a totally alien culture that is based on hierarchy, intolerant of failure, and at the highest level, is ruled by horrifying nightmare things that breathe freezing poison gases. Along the way, he picks up allies, like van Buskirk, a variant human space marine from a heavy gravity planet who can do a standing jump of 20 feet in full space armor, Worsel, a telepathic dragon warrior scientist with the technical improvisation skills of MacGyver (who reads like the most sadistically minmaxed munchkinized RPG character of all time), and Nandreck, a psychologist from a Pluto-like planet of selfish cowards.

The scale of the conflict starts small, just skirmishes with pirates, but explodes to near apocalyptic dimensions. This series has space battles with millions of starships emerging from hyperspacial tubes to attack the ultragood Arisians, homeworld of the first intelligent race in the cosmos. By the end of the fourth book, there are mind battles where the reflected and parried mental beams leave hundreds of innocent bystanders dead. In the meantime we get evil Black Lensmen, the Hell Hole in Space, and superweapons like the Negasphere and the Sunbeam, where an entire solar system was turned into a vacuum tube.

It’s not hard to understand why Lensmen faded in importance. While the alien Lensmen had lively psychologies, Lensman Kimball Kinnison was not an interesting person, and that’s a problem when scifi starts to become more about characterization. The Lensman books, with their love of police and their sexism (it is an explicit plot point that the Lens is incompatible with female minds – in canon there are no female Lensmen) led to it being judged harshly by the New Wave writers of the 1960s, who viewed it all as borderline fascist military-scifi establishment hokum, and the reputation of the series never recovered from the spirit of that decade.

Prisoner of Zenda

Prisoner of Zenda is a novel about a roguish con-man who visits a postage-stamp, charmingly picturesque Central European kingdom with storybook castles, where he finds he looks just like the local king and is forced to pose as him in palace intrigues. It’s a swashbuckling story about mistaken identity, swordfighting, and intrigue, one part swashbuckler and one part dark political thriller.

The popularity of this book predates organized fandom as we know it, so I wonder if “fandom” is even the right word to use. All the same, it inspired fanatical dedication from readers. There was such a popular hunger for it that an entire library could be filled with nothing but rip-offs of Prisoner of Zenda. If you have a favorite writer who was active between 1900-1950, I guarantee he probably wrote at least one Prisoner of Zenda rip-off (which is nearly always the least-read book in his oeuvre). The only novel in the 20th Century that inspired more imitators was Sherlock Holmes. Robert Heinlein and Edmond “Planet Smasher” Hamilton wrote scifi updates of Prisoner of Zenda. Doctor Who lifted the plot wholesale for the Tom Baker era episode, “Androids of Tara,” Futurama did this exact plot too, and even Marvel Comics has its own copy of Ruritania, Doctor Doom’s Kingdom of Latveria. Even as late as the 1980s, every kids’ cartoon did a “Prisoner of Zenda” episode, one of the stock plots alongside “everyone gets hit by a shrink ray” and the Christmas Carol episode.

Prisoner of Zenda imitators were so numerous, that they even have their own Library of Congress sub-heading, of “Ruritanian Romance.”

One major reason that Prisoner of Zenda fandom died off is that, between World War I and World War II, there was a brutal lack of sympathy for anything that seemed slightly German, and it seems the incredibly Central European Prisoner of Zenda was a casualty of this. Far and away, the largest immigrant group in the United States through the entire 19th Century were Germans, who were more numerous than Irish or Italians. There were entire cities in the Midwest that were two-thirds German-born or German-descent, who met in Biergartens and German community centers that now no longer exist.

Kurt Vonnegut wrote a lot about how the German-American world he grew up in vanished because of the prejudice of the World Wars, and that disappearance was so extensive that it was retroactive, like someone did a DC comic-style continuity reboot where it all never happened: Germans, despite being the largest immigrant group in US history, are left out of the immigrant story. The “Little Bohemias” and “Little Berlins” that were once everywhere no longer exist. There is no holiday dedicated to people of German ancestry in the US, the way the Irish have St. Patrick’s Day or Italians have Columbus Day (there is Von Steuben’s Day, dedicated to a general who fought with George Washington, but it’s a strictly Midwest thing most people outside the region have never heard of, like Sweetest Day). If you’re reading this and you’re an academic, and you’re not sure what to do your dissertation on, try writing about the German-American immigrant world of the 19th and 20th Centuries, because it’s a criminally under-researched topic.

A. Merritt

Pop quiz: who was the most popular and influential fantasy author during the 1930s and 40s?

If you answered Tolkien or Robert E. Howard, you’re wrong - it was actually Abraham Merritt. He was the most popular writer of his age of the kind of fiction he did, and he’s since been mostly forgotten. Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons and Dragons, has said that A. Merritt was his favorite fantasy and horror novelist.

Why did A. Merritt and his fandom go away, when at one point, he was THE fantasy author? Well, obviously one big answer was the 1960s counterculture, which brought different writers like Tolkien and Lovecraft to the forefront (by modern standards Lovecraft isn’t a fantasy author, but he was produced by the same early century genre-fluid effluvium that produced Merritt and the rest). The other answer is that A. Merritt was so totally a product of the weird occult speculation of his age that it’s hard to even imagine him clicking with audiences in other eras. His work is based on fringe weirdness that appealed to early 20th Century spiritualism and made sense at the time: reincarnation, racial memory, an obsession with lost race stories and the stone age, and weirdness like the 1920s belief that the Polar Arctic is the ancestral home of the Caucasian race. In other words, it’s impossible to explain Merritt without a ton of sentences that start with “well, people in the 1920s thought that…” That’s not a good sign when it comes to his universality.

That’s it for now. Do you have any suggestions on a dead fandom, or do you keep one of these “dead” fandoms alive in your heart?

Tom Holland Imagine: Comic Con

Summary: You and Tom meet at Comic Con while you’re both promoting your new movies

A/N: I saw The Lost City of Z today and almost died because it was so good. It’s literally my favorite book of all time and when I found out Tom was going to play Jack is almost cried.

Warnings: none

————————————————

Tom and the rest of the Spider-Man: Homecoming cast were in the middle of an interview when she first caught his eye. She was dressed in a blue floral dress when he saw her. Tom tried to keep his focus on answering the questions but his attention kept diverting to her smile. Her smile was the most enchanting smile he had ever seen and she had the most kind eyes of anyone he had ever met.

She was crouched next to a little girl and appeared to be singing. Although Tom couldn’t hear her, he knew she had to have the voice of an angel.

“So, Tom, got your eye on anyone?”

Tom snapped his head back over to the interviewer who was smiling at him.

Tom stayed quiet for a moment as he looked at Zendaya for help who simply giggled at the boy in distress.

“Um, I-uh… I don’t know. There’s one girl who I recently saw and thought was beautiful. But I haven’t had the chance to introduce myself to her yet…”

Tom could feel his cheeks heating up as the rest of the cast ooo'ed at his response.

Tom looked up to Harrison who was smirking at him.

Tom turned his gaze back to look for her, but she was gone. Tom felt like he was going to have a panic attack if he didn’t find her soon.

Luckily for him, the interview ended and he had 1 hour before their panel started. 1 hour to find the mystery girl.

Tom frantically looked around the mountains of people for the dark haired girl in the light blue floral dress. Tom prayed to whatever god was up there that he would find her and find her soon.

Tom was abducted from his prayers by a familiar voice calling his name.

He turned his head to see friendly blue eyes looking back him.

“Hey, kid. It’s been a while.” Sebastian said as he smiled sweetly at Tom.

Although they joked about having a rivalry, they were actually quite fond of each other.

“Oh, hey Seb. Sorry, I just saw this girl earlier and I’m trying to find her.”

“Oh? What’d she look like?”

“Ummm… dark hair, kind eyes, beautiful smile, she was wearing a light blue dress with yellow, black and white flowers on it.”

“I think I know who you’re talking about. Her name’s Y/N. She’s the voice of the new Disney princess. She’s probably in the break room, honestly. Or maybe try and find her booth?”

Tom nodded and took off towards the break room.

“Okay, bye, I guess…” Sebastian mumbled as he watched the lovesick boy run away from him.

Tom could hear people yelling his name for pictures, but he ignored all of them. He felt horrible for neglecting his fans, but he had to find her.

Tom finally reached the break room and saw the same beautiful smile from before as she read from a book of fairytales.

Everything felt like slow motion for Tom as he approached where she was sitting.

Tom had normally been good at talking to girls, but as soon as her e/c eyes met his, he felt hopeless.

His throat ran dry and he could hear his heart pounding in his chest while his stomach did cartwheels inside of him. He felt like he was no longer in reality, but placed in a fictional world of romance like in the movies his mom always watches.

Tom suddenly become aware of how much time had passed of him staring when he noticed her smile beginning to drop.

“Hi? Can I help you with something?”

And that was it. Hearing her voice. Her voice was as smooth as velvet and as beautiful as a sunset over an ocean.

Tom swallowed the lump in his voice and counted to three before blurting out a hello.

The beautiful smile returned to her face as she greeted him once again.

Tom’s cheeks heated up again.

“I’m Tom. I uh, I saw you earlier and I-I just, um-”

“He thinks you’re really pretty!”

Tom whipped around to see Sebastian standing at the door smirking, obviously enjoying the torture that the poor boy was in.

“Oh… is that true?”

Tom turned back to look at Y/N with wide eyes. He slowly nodded and felt his cheeks grow warmer if that was even possible.

Y/N smiled up at him before grabbing a notepad from the tables and a pen.

“Well, if that’s the case, maybe when you learn how to speak properly, you can give me a call.”

Y/N handed Tom the piece of paper that contained her phone number.

Tom smile brightly at Y/N before he heard them calling for the Spider-Man Cast to head to their panel.

“Maybe after this is over, I can take you to dinner? Would that be okay?”

“That sounds perfect.”

Our Pet Monster

TW: Mentions of Pedophilia

When we moved to Pine Drive, I never expected to find a conspiracy among the kids there.

I was an only child and a loner, thanks to my parents always moving. My dad’s job had him hopping from state to state. It was a pretty tough going if you wanted to make friends. But he promised that we’d stay at least six months here, so I had a chance to make at least one friend.

And whadya know, on my block, there were a ton of kids to make friends with.

I didn’t even really have to try. Two days after moving in, the Langley twins Diana and David were pounding on my door, asking who owned that bike parked in the front yard and if they wanted to play. I was shy but the twins were ecstatic to meet me.

Apparently their group had an odd number before I moved in and they needed equal teams to play their games with.

There was Alicia, who was six, she was the baby but she was very sweet. The oldest was Fletcher who was thirteen but his social skills were a bit behind so he didn’t mind hanging out with a bunch of nine and ten year olds. I think there was about ten of us all in all.

But I learned soon enough that there was a secret each of them shared.

From Dan’s Rush AMA
  • He’d like to possibly cover Closer to the Heart by Rush in the future
  • His favorite concert of Rush’s he’s seen (out of 11) is the R30 tour in 2004
  • His favorite thing he’s seen them play live is Xanadu
  • He doesn’t plan on trying to start playing an instrument (aside from the bass which he has said he’s mediocre at) because the band he’s got now has such awesome musicians that he wants to focus on being the best vocalist he can be
  • His favorite Skyhill song is Run with the Hunted, and his least favorite is Only One
  • His favorite Rush song to play on the bass is Fountain of Lameneth (but it’s hard)
  • It’s pretty likely that there will eventually be a new Skyhill song or album
  • He first saw Rush in 1994 in NJ at the Brendan Byrne Arena. He’s seen them on every tour since.
  • He’s hoping that next year they’ll be able to tour in the UK, and he’d like to be able to tour in Australia too at some point
  • What influenced him most from Rush is their chord choices, their worth ethic, and their integrity.
  • If he could perform vocals on one song with Rush, it would probably be Time Stand Still
  • His best Rush-related experience was zoning out by himself as a kid and letting their music take his imagination places
  • His favorite Rush albums are A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Caress of Steel, and 2112. His least favorite (though he still loves them!) are Hold your Fire, Counterparts, and Snakes and Arrows
  • The most direct way that Rush has affected him is that they helped inspire him to commit his life to music.
  • His top 3 songs are Xanadu, Hemispheres, and Fountain of Lameneth
  • He started listening to Rush at 13 and he became obsessed with them. He sang their music to himself all day during school.
  • When asked how many Rush shirts he has, his answer was “Too many!!”
  • A Farewell to Kings is his alltime favorite Rush album
  • What initially caused him to enjoy Rush was that it was an awesome sound that he’d never really heard before and lyrics that appealed to his nerdy Lord of the Rings loving self.
  • His favorite >10 minute Rush track is (possibly) Circumstances
  • “ I’m more Jewish by culture than by religion. I certainly believe that there’s a lot to life and the universe that we don’t understand, and I respect anyone who finds their answers in religion, but it’s never been a big part of my life personally.”
  •  His favorite Rush show to watch is one from Rio
  • The song he’s most proud of is 6969 because it’s a comedy prog song, which is something he’s always wanted to do.
  • His favorite part of 2112 is the overture
  • Hemispheres will always remind him of his freshman year of high school. He listened to it constantly.
  • Both him and Arin write the lyrics to Starbomb songs
  • He feels an immediate kinship with other Rush fans. “We’re like a world-wide secret club!”
  • The rush album he feels is most underrated is Presto
  • The first Rush song he listened to was Roll the Bones
  • He would be interested in giving talks about music/comedy/career stuff at colleges or high schools if there was an audience for it.
  • He got into Rush at age 12 because the guy that worked at his local comic book shop (named Keith) introduced him to them. “God bless that man.” Before he discovered them he listened to a lot of Def Leppard and Nirvana
  • Q:  if you were to start your career again today, where would you start? Youtube / twitch / podcasts?
A:  I don’t think I’d do anything differently because even the years of “failure” taught me a lot and allowed me time to improve. Once that spotlight is on you, you’d better be ready for it. I’d say start in the medium that inspires you individually the most and work as hard as you can on it from there.
  • Q:  how do you think the future of NSP has changed now that you guys have topped the motherfucking charts with Under the Covers?? You guys fucking rule and I’m so happy for you and your multitudes of success!
A:  Thank you! We were psyched that our recent albums have charted so well, but I don’t think we’ll do anything differently. We’ll just keep doing what feels right to the best of our ability!
  • 6969 came together quickly when writing it. The video only took so long because it was such a huge jump in ambition and it has a learning curve. “If we do something like that again, things should go a lot more smoothly!”
  • The Pass has helped him through some tough times.
  • (I believe) that the lyrics he’d get as a tattoo are “ All of us get lost in the darkness Dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter Dreamers learn to look at the cars!”
  • Q: What would you say is the best dish at Olive Garden?
A: The dish where you get up, walk across the street, and eat at Outback Steakhouse
  • He meditates in silence before a show because he’d get overhyped if he listened to music.
  • Doesn’t have a favorite member of Rush, “it’s an equilateral triangle”
  • Says Moving Pictures is usually a safe bet to start off with introducing someone to Rush
  • He picked Madrigal and Subdivisions for the first UTC because he loves them and they’re easy to sing. “I don’t know if I could hit some of those crazy high notes Geddy rocked in the 70s”
  • He thinks Witch Hunt would be a very good song to cover.  Such a great song and so relevant right now! “Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand”
  • His favorite song to try and fail at on bass is YYZ
  • “ I don’t think there’s any conscious decision to have Rush influence my music, but I’ve spent so many thousands of hours listening to them, it’s inevitable that it just comes out naturally”
  •  His favorite album to work on in his career is what he’s doing now (UTC2 and Cool Patrol) because “we’ve grown so much and finally have a full band!”
  • He doesn’t mind when fans are super nervous to meet him. He was nervous when he met Rush, too, “so it’s just the circle of life!”
  • He chose bass because it was different and fun to find submelodies.
  • Q:  Hey Dan! I’m looking forward to Under the Covers 2. I started writing comedy music and NSP is one of my main inspirations. What do you wish you knew about writing comedy music earlier on in your career?
A:  Nothing in particular really. You learn and you go and there’s no substitute for just doing something over a long period of time. Of course there are things I would change about our early work, but it was the best we could do at the time so I have to be cool with it.
  • “I listened to so much of them [Rush] growing up that it’s in my blood and unconsciously shapes the way I approach music”
  • His second favorite album flops between Hemispheres, Caress of Steel, and 2112 on any given day
  • His favorite story/message told in a Rush song→ Story is Fountain of Lameneth because it’s a beautiful summary of life. Message is Spirit of Radio where they talk about the importance of integrity in art.
  • His biggest influences are Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Nirvana, Spacehog, and Gentle Giant (to name a few)
  • He does his best on his Rickenbacker bass but it’s just for fun. “My band already has a bass player that’s better than I’ll ever be!”

“Thanks everyone! I have to go see my family now otherwise I’d stay longer. Sorry I couldn’t get to everyone’s questions but I had a lot of fun. I’d be happy to do this again in the future!
You being fans of mine means the world to me and I promise to keep making comedy and music for a long time! Thanks to you, the moderators who set this up, and of course Rush for being an awesome and inspirational force!”

or…lena doesn’t stop believing in the one person who believed in her

(or…the terrible thing i wrote to get rid of writer’s block and it’s long and sad but has a happy ending)

Supergirl dies on a Wednesday.

Sometimes, when she’s alone in her office in the wee hours of the morning, still in yesterday’s clothing and unsure when she’d last eaten, she thinks about that, the utter normalcy of losing National City’s hero on a Wednesday. Somehow, the death on such a boring day of the week provides a sort of stark contrast that Lena has trouble wrapping her head around. After all, surely the hero and pride of National City would fall in a blaze of glory on a Friday night, a Sunday afternoon, even a Monday morning during rush hour.

But a Wednesday? Some time between mid-morning and noon? When nothing was happening except for the drudge of the week, the tireless churning of society?

She doesn’t understand it—has tried to come to terms with it with very little success. In her weakest moments, when she’s staring down the end of a bottle of whiskey or wine (before Jess or Maggie or even James Olsen pry the bottle from her fingertips and help her get home), she thinks the very banality of Supergirl’s death is evidence of its unnecessary nature, its needless, pointless, meaningless, asinine

Supergirl dies on a Wednesday.

By Friday, the President herself comes to National City to mourn the fallen hero. She talks about the few short conversations she’s had with Supergirl, how everyone should be inspired and follow Supergirl’s wonderful example. A true hero, an exemplary citizen.

(Lena doesn’t go to the ceremony. She and Alex spend that afternoon in Kara’s apartment, sitting on Kara’s couch, Alex stoically staring at the television screen with silent tears running down her cheeks and Lena gripping her hand so tightly she thinks she’ll break fingers.

After that, Lena doesn’t see much of Alex at all.)

“Mother, it’s your day” - Batmom x Batfam

It’s not mother’s day where I come from, but since it is in a shitload of countries…Well, I wrote something with the batfamily about it (I wrote it in litteraly 10 minutes, writing as words came to my mind, and didn’t proof read, sorry if there’s mistakes, and if it’s meh). Hope you’ll like it, don’t hesitate to tell me what you think, feedbacks are always appreciated  :

(My masterlist blog here : https://ella-ravenwood-archives.tumblr.com)

_______________________________________________________________________

It was 6 am when they came back from patrol. As usual, they found you asleep in Bruce’s giant chair, in front of the batcomputer, waiting for them to come back.

You would usually wake up at the sound of their arrival, however today, you were in a deep slumber…You had quite a difficult and busy week. Bruce, knowing that, stopped Damian from waking you up.

He couldn’t blame the boy though. He was too excited…it was his first “Mother’s Day” after all. Damian annoyed his brothers all night, asking for advice about what he was suppose to do on that day, and once he understood the purpose of it, got really excited about showing you how much you meant to him…But right now, you needed your sleep.

To be honest, they all needed sleep. It could wait a few hours.

Raising you delicately in his arms, Bruce took you back to the master’s bedroom. You didn’t stir when he laid you in bed, and you didn’t even react to the sound of him taking a shower. When he slipped in bed, you went to snuggle against him, but he realized that it was more a reflex than you being awake, and with a small smile on his face, he wrapped his arms around you and soon, he was asleep too.

************************

The smell of eggs and bacon is what woke you up. And Bruce’s groans.

You opened one eye, and then the other, slowly, sleep still fogging your vision a bit. You weren’t sure what were those four forms at the end of your bed…

-I sure hope you guys aren’t naked under the cover, cause that’s a sight I don’t wanna see right after waking up.

@zsaszmatazz tagged me to do the “six movies I can watch any time” meme (LIKE 10 YEARS AGO I’M SORRY) so here goes!

1. Road to El Dorado

Don’t tell me you can’t also watch this whenever. It’s lolzy, it’s feelsy, and it’s the source of one of my three OT3s. If Miguel/Tulio wasn’t allowed to be canon, I’m making Miguel/Chel/Tulio my headcanon dammit. Fight me.

The story is a fantastic adventure every time. The music is amazing, the animation is GORGEOUS. The jokes are funny no matter how many times I hear them. “Stars.” “Holy ship.” “Apparently ‘El Dorado’ is native for GREAT… BIG… ROCK.”

And don’t get me started on the armadillo. Is that thing a spirit guide? A god? Probably. I’m for it.

2. Chicken Run

I consider this one a guilty pleasure. Again, always a funny, fun adventure. Just serious enough to balance out the lolz. And Ginger is one hell of a snarky character. I love that she’s simultaneously mom friend and rebel friend.

Also, it’s that claymation Wallace and Gromit animation, which is just… nifty! I always find myself watching certain characters move, checking out different textures, especially with Babs and her knitting. Just… excellent.

Also, also this:

3. Stardust

What can I say about this movie? Well…

I was based on a book written by my favorite author, Neil Gaiman, is a fantastic adventure that addresses the line between magic and non-magic worlds and includes such fun things as evil witches, falling in love, warring princes, falling stars, unicorns, ghosts, and sky pirates in drag (which Neil said he’s pretty sure he didn’t write, but it’s such a good scene you guys).

I am always happy by the end of it. The growing-up story is so good. And Tristan kind of bumbles through it like I totally believe I would were I thrown into a story like that. It’s just… such a satisfyingly complete and fun story, and I love it every single time.

4. Megamind

Shut the hell your mouth this is the best villain-to-hero story I know. I am always so proud of Megamind. Like, real talk, how often does our favorite adorable villain get the girl? How often do we get to see the bumbling bad guy actually get a cool-ass happy ending? And the emotional journey he goes on gets just serious enough without killing the funny vibe the whole movie carries.

The writing is tropey, but in a way that totally plays on those tropes while making fun of them. Trope-ception is my favorite trope. And I love, love, LOVE the design choices. This movie is so colorful, and the proportions are so over the top. It’s just a visual salad.

And, as always, the jokes are good no matter what. I don’t think I’ll ever get over, “And I love you, random citizen!” This movie is such a fun time, please go watch it.

5. Strange Magic

Have you heard of this movie? Well, now you have. Please go watch it.

Much like Megamind, Strange Magic got pushed to the back burner by more popular movies coming out at the same time. And that’s just a shame, because it’s just so good.

It’s a jukebox musical with reenactments of all sorts of songs, all of which are brilliant (half the time because Evan Rachel Wood My Queen is singing them, but also Alan Cumming, and sometimes they sing together and I die). The story is predictable, but the characters are what make it for me. They’re fun enough that even though I saw the end coming a mile away, it was nothing but enjoyable watching them get there.

This fandom is also dear to my heart. It’s full of some of the sweetest people with some of the most interesting fan fiction that I’ve ever read. When I think good writing, I think @abutterflyobsession who has made me cry on more than one occasion, and @jaegereska whose lore and OCs add so much to the world beyond the movie.

Major draws: good music, lovely animation, self-confidence story, princess with a sword, SWEET SWEET VENGEANCE, and did I mention singing by Evan Rachel Wood, Alan Cumming, and Kristin Chenoweth? Bruh.

6. Labyrinth

My favorite movie for now and always. Set it at the bottom for full effect. Get ready.

First off, music by David Bowie that is fuckin’ catchy as heck. If you don’t want to at least tap your foot along to ‘Dance Magic Dance’ you’re lying. ‘As the World Falls Down’ was the first song I remember wanting to know the lyrics to.

Side note: If you didn’t think the Fireys were creepy as fuck, you’re also lying.

There has never been so much glitter in one place ever. The visual gags are always funny. Like, there are Bowie faces I still can’t find to this day hidden in the scenery??? The muppets are all adorable because Brian Froud is amazing, and I want a pet goblin. Everything is just so much fun to look at. Don’t even get me started on the ridiculous fantasy fulfillment that is the ballroom scene. I just.

The jokes are always funny because they run on a dry sense of humor like mine. “Well, come on feet.” One I missed for years. “No, that’s the dead end, behind you!” Ha, hubris. “It’s a piece of cake!” Shut up, Sarah…

But you also can’t not love the characters? Like, come on, who doesn’t wanna hug Ludo just a little. And Didymus, the fox knight that rides a fuckin’ tiny dog into battle?? And Hoggle who collects jewelry and pretends to be bitter as hell but cares so much??? Heck off, they’re all awesome.

Fave movie. Always.

Honorable Mention: Big Fish

Added this one because I can watch this any time, but it always makes me cry, so I usually save it for when I need a good cry. (Srsly, @may10baby can vouch, I once tried to explain the end to her and started sobbing in the car).

It’s just such a cool story. We get to see the life of the father as told through his own hyperbolic stories, which include a star-studded cast playing funny scenes in between serious family time. And the end… christ, it’s just such a satisfying ending. Such a good play on storytelling and what it can mean to people. Which, as a writer, means a lot to me.

Also, it’s the only Tim Burton movie I’ve seen that doesn’t look like… that. You know. How Burton movies look. Helena Bonham Carter plays like 3 different people, and none of them are Mrs. Lovett. That’s a feat, honestly.

I’ve said this about a few of these, but please watch this movie.

Disney films that are *actually* underrated

Treasure Plant

If you already know me, you could probably guess that this would be on the list considering I never shut up about it.

This film flopped at the box office, but I’m honestly not sure why? It has absolutely gorgeous animation. Like, they could have gone with a palette of grays and blues like most scifi films do, but Treasure Planet actually has a large color palette, especially when it comes to the scenery. It shows off all the beautiful colors of space instead of making everything chrome against a dark backdrop. There are likable characters, including a an anti-hero, disabled pirate, a female Naval Captain that’s a total no-nonsense badass, and a sulky teenager. Arguably one of the darkest films Disney has done in the last twenty years. Disabled main character with only one eye, one arm, and one leg. Literally all of the character designs are gorgeous. The plot is a little boring at times, but it’s fairly easy to get lost in the world that’s been created.

Plus, we get visuals like this!

Brother Bear

Brother Bear was another box office flop but this one also had rather negative reviews. The early 2000′s was not kind to Disney animation.

Yes, it does have a transformation plot, which I know is kind of iffy depending on the person, but overall it’s a great film. The music is amazing, bless Phil Collins signing onto another Disney project. The characters are great, I don’t think there were any I didn’t like except maybe the moose (because as an adult I don’t find them as funny as I did as a child, but I don’t really dislike them either). The relationship between the brothers was amazingly done. Usually when people want to talk about animated sibling relationships, they mention Lilo and Stitch, which is also great, but I really like how the brothers interact in Brother bear. They’re all closer in age (which is like my sister and me, so I can connect with it more), and I think that worked well when they added in the anger and grief and self-blame in the story.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

There’s not really much I can say about this one, because truthfully I’ve only seen it a handful of times. Something about it kind of freaked me out as a child (I think it was that giant leviathan creature that attacked their submarine thing????), and I only recently found my old VHS player and haven’t had the time to watch it again.

Atlantis has it all. A beautiful world. Well-rounded, interesting characters. A romance that didn’t feel ridiculously forced. The voice talents of Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, and Leonard Nimoy. A balances of a more adult plotline, while still retaining a kid friendly atmosphere.

Unfortunately, it does lack some coherency in the plot, and because of it’s fast-paced nature, there isn’t a lot of time for character development. The creators also borrowed a lot of elements from the Ghibli film castle in the Sky, but ultimately it’s still a great film visually speaking.

(PS: it was hard to pick a screencap that shows how visually stunning this film is. So much blue.)

The Black Cauldron

Honestly, The Black Cauldron is one of my favorite Disney films, but I can recognize that it has a lot of problems story wise. As in, they tried to stick the contents of two full length novels into an 80 minute film. Yeah, it didn’t work. The characters are interesting, albeit under-developed, visually it’s very beautiful, and it has just the right amount of creepy to give 5 year old me nightmares as a child (the Horned King was a brilliant concept). The author of the book series the Chronicles of Prydain, which the film is based on, found the film enjoyable on its own, but admitted it didn’t follow the books well. It was also another box office flop, making $21.3 million in revenue, which was less than half of the budget to make the film. This is the film that Disney pretends they didn’t make and is frequently referred to as the “worst Disney film” however we all know that that right belongs to films like Home on the Range, Chicken Little, and Mars Needs Moms.

There is speculation that Disney has plans to make a live action series based on the original books, so fingers crossed!

Robin Hood

It’s underrated, but I can kind of tell why. Everyone already knows the story of Robin Hood, because there’s at least ten different films and TV series about the guy. He’s been on OUaT, and there was a parody movie with Cary Elwes!

The animation is, decent, but not great, but the budged was only 5 million, so??? Meaning that a lot of the characters action were redrawn from previous films such as The Jungle Book and Aristocats. However, this was pretty common in old Disney films because the animators were paid for shit and it’s not plagiarism if you’re ripping off yourself. It is a little sloppy though.

Either way, it’s still a decent film. The songs were fun and had a delightfully folk sound to them, if you’re into that! The characters are pretty cute, the story is straight forward, and there’s not actually anything to really dislike about the film. It’s just a silly comedy that has it’s ups and downs.

Dinosaur

I don’t even know what to say about this film other than it’s gorgeous and no one ever talks about it. Like, this is the first true Disney film that relies entirely on CGI. No Pixar involvement. Just Disney and CGI. This is the most successful film of 2000 and I’ve never heard people talk about it even though it has great characters, an interesting story, and great visuals.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

While I personally don’t believe Hunchback is all that underrated (I usually see it in just about every top 10 or 20 list), it’s still a great film that deserves more praise than it gets.

Hunchback is beautiful, inspiring, dark, has excellent morals, amazing characters amazing music. It’s basically the complete package of everything you could want in a Disney film and it’s enjoyable for all ages.

The only thing I didn’t like about this film was the gargoyles and it’s kind of implied that they’re more like imaginary friends instead of real creatures, so they get a pass.

Aquarius, who was pretty much in love with the world. She never really feared or had any uncertain doubts about the future, and it was always that attitude of her getting what she wanted, or die trying type. What ever you needed, she would. No questions asked. She was there at your every call. And yet, Aquarius didn’t hesitate to push me out of her life. The constant repitition of doing the same promises and telling her that I’ll change became an old tune to her that she had nothing else to do but lose it and throw profanities and leave. She deserves more than words. She needed actions.

Aries, who looked at the world with passion. Her favorite motto was: ‘Go big or get the fuck out’ Her emotions were huge defense in terms of protecting herself from unecessary vibes. She was also a strong and passionate love, and how she would always take the lead and make sure she has her way with you. And yet Aries cried to me, grabbing me by the throat, and gritted her teeth telling me how much I was the worst, how I was a big mistake. She said it as if it were poison, and I watched as she said it with strong hate only to find her later outside, holding herself and holding back tears.

Cancer, who loved to kiss her teeth when she was feeling some type of way. What I loved her the most was when she was feeling needy and she would come up from behind, all her hair would fall on my and she would kiss me the whole time. The laugh she does would echo through the room, and her emotions would flow out of her. She was like a child, she loved the attention. She craved our passion. And yet, Cancer threw a fit. Threw things at me and yelled at me. The pain in her voice, the laughter no longer heard. She left.

Capricorn, who loved the smell of cinnamon. The moment you stepped in her house, a cinnamon scented candle would greet you. She loved nothing more than to stay home after a long day and read nothing but books, I mean any philosophical ones. She would ask for my input about an idea, or a theory she would read. She scowls when I tell her “I don’t know..” and she’d tell me to open more and dive into her world. Explore every possibility and never question the outcome. To grow was her motto. And yet, I walked into an empty room. A letter by the table and there was a letter, written: Your beauty is transcendent, yes, but painfully abstract. - Plato.

Gemini, who loved the arts. If there was a performance in town she would pull me with her, drag me out of bed and bring her to the place. She loved movies the most, and she had collections of black and white movies, movies I have never heard of. Photography was her escape. A part of her room was covered of pictures of people, scenaries and things. She was amazing, but her personality was her flaw. She loved you today, and she wants to be free the next. But she always comes back, falling more and more each day.. and yet, as she grew to love me, she too grew to be distant. The time we spent were falling and finally she looked at me and said goodbye.

Leo, who was a perfectionist. She knew what she wanted and what she craved and her pride was her favorite thing. No meant nothing to her. Everybody knew her, and she was wild. She was free. She was fiesty. She was rough. She was life. And yet, because of her pride, she would not settle. She wanted more than just as it was, and I was not able to provide.

Libra, a long distance lover. Loved to call and text every chance she can to be with me, and it went on for months as we grew and loved one another. Her smile on our first video chat, and we slept for hours and we laughed when we woke. We talked about dreams, the future and the possibility of having a family and shared deep secrets, secrets untold. And yet, she picked up a video chat one day and she was with another. She frowned and stared at me. No words needed.

Pisces, loved the idea of love. She made our lives a beginning of a world of wonder and dreams. We were both stuck in lala land, and she showered and cared for our love like no other. And yet, as she loved and loved she slowly began to see the flaws and faults. The fighting and the arguements, non-stop anxiety and jealousy feelings came and she began to wonder if our love was more than a chapter than the whole book of love itself. And for that, she left.

Sagittarius, adored me so much that everything asked was given with no hesitation. She was never to quick to think it through, and she was eager to pull a plan through. And yet, she started to realize her worth. She knew what she was capable of and who she was, and admitted that she was lost before and found herself in the process of being with me. She thanked me for my purpose and we haven’t talked since.

Scorpio, who loved to be dominant. She meant every thing she says, and she expect me to keep myself in check. She wanted nothing more than just to be real and accept our flaws. To love it, respect it. She loved the fact that she was above me, and I succumbed to her. And yet, she later on confessed her true colors and she was not prepared to open up, and she needed time to explore more of herself in order for her to settle down.

Taurus, she was the kind of person that loved to create small things into adventures. Who loved taking trips to stores and various places that made her mind wander. I watched her grow and grow each time we’re together, that slowly she’s out of my reach. She was the epitome of a person that the universe gives you at a young age, and she blossoms into something you couldn’t handle yet.

Virgo, who valued love as much as I. The opposite of, and yet the same as me. She loved nothing more than to be loved, and loved we did. Her voice, her laugh, the moments we shared were the typical romantic scenes you see in movies. She would come home and slowly make her way to me, wrapping herself to me. And complain and talked about her day. She doesn’t even need to speak to me and it was a very strong connection we had that made us in sync with another. She was simple. She was the definition of love. She was mine. And yet, we slowly faded and stopped. The red thread disappeared and our time ended. She was gone. I became lost.

—  Beginning and End

Daddy Daughter Date! (Photos aren’t mine)

You were in the middle of starting your bath when you heard the bathroom door open and close. You had a feeling you knew who it was, you just tossed in some lavender scented bath salts before tightening your robe and turning around. You couldn’t help but smile at the sight of your five year old daughter standing there in her favorite dress. You knew she had been looking forward to this night all week, she had even put a “special princess” sticker on today’s date on the Frozen calendar that was hanging in her room.

“Well don’t you just look lovely.” You told her and she smiled and did a little twirl for you. “Have special plans for tonight?” You asked and she just slightly rolled her eyes, something Harry swears she learned from you.

“Mommy, you know I have a special date!” Her voice was soft and sweet, you just smiled at her as you ran your hand through her long hair.

“Oi! Did I hear somethin about a date? Ya too young lovey!” The sound of Harry’s loud voice made you jump as you snapped your head in the direction of his closet where he was supposed to be picking out a tie.

“Daddy don’t be silly!” Your daughter’s voice was playful as she turned from looking at you to facing the doorway of the closet Harry was currently standing in. You smiled as Harry walked towards her holding out two ties, one was a nude pink color and the other was a bit of a brighter shade of pink. He knelt down in front of her and held out the ties for her to look at.

“Need ya help lovey, I have a special date tonight with one of the most precious girls in the world and I just can’t pick a tie.” He quickly glanced over at you giving you a wink causing you to roll your eyes and laugh a little as you turned your attention back towards the bath you were so looking forward to soaking in.

“This one.” You looked over and saw Harry grinning as your daughter pointed towards the brighter pink tie. You knew it wouldn’t exactly go well with the navy suit he was wearing, but you also were well aware of the fact her favorite color at the moment was pink so naturally Harry had to incorporate that color into his outfit.

“Perfect choice my little love.” You heard him say as you leaned over and turned off the water. When you turned back around you couldn’t fight the grin that took over your face as you watched Harry do his tie in the full length mirror outside his closet. Your daughter was now standing next to him looking up at him as his hands fiddled with the fabric of the tie until it was decent enough for him to flop the collar of his white button up shirt over.

“Well don’t you two just look smashing.” Both of their heads turned towards you, Harry smiled as he looked down at the little girl standing next to him in her pretty pink dress and white sandals. You smiled at her as she walked over to you and wrapped her arms around your legs.

“You gonna miss us mommy?” Her voice was muffled slightly as she turned her head so her cheek was against the fabric of your robe that hit just above your knee. You gently ran a hand over her hair as she looked up at you with her big green eyes.

“I will miss you terribly.” You reassured her causing a smile to form on her face. Harry cleared his throat making you shoot him a look, he just shrugged causing you to roll your eyes. “I will miss you as well H, don’t worry.” You teased causing him to stick his tongue out at you.

“Come on my little love, don’t wanna be late for our dinner reservations.” You smiled as you felt her arms unwrap from around your legs, she turned around and grabbed Harry’s outstretched hand. “See you later my love, enjoy your bath.” Harry leaned over quickly and placed a sweet kiss to your lips before the two of them were out of the bathroom and you were left alone, just you and the relaxing bath you had prepared.

You knew Harry had pulled out all the stops for this special daddy and daughter date, it being the first one and all he wanted it to be special. You knew he had a limo waiting out front and a table reserved at her favorite restaurant and he even went as far as to make sure flowers were waiting for her upon their arrival at the restaurant. He planned for the two of them to get a private tour of the zoo after dinner.

You knew that was just going to blow her mind, she had developed a new love and interest in animals lately so you knew a tour of the zoo for just the two of them was going to be so fun for her. He had mentioned to you his idea of getting frozen yogurt after the zoo but he also mentioned the idea of going to a bakery and having her pick out cupcakes he wasn’t quite sure so he was going to let her decide when the time came. You were just so excited for the two of them and you couldn’t wait to hear all about it.

You later found yourself in bed reading your latest book when you heard the front door open and when you didn’t hear the sound of little feet running towards your room you turned and looked at the clock. You hadn’t even noticed they had been gone for quite a while, you slid off the bed and poked your head out into the hallway. You smiled as you saw Harry walking towards you.

“She fell asleep on the way to the bakery.” Harry’s voice was barely above a whisper as you saw him carrying your sleeping daughter off towards her room. You had to stop a laugh as you saw her cheek pressed against the top of his shoulder and her hair a crazy mess atop her head.

“Did you two have fun?” You quietly asked as you followed him into her room, he slowly and gentle laid her down onto her bed as you slipped her shoes off her little feet. Harry smiled at her before placing a quick kiss to her forehead, he tucked her quilt over her as you placed her shoes back into her closet.

“Oh love I wish you could’ve seen her face.” He explained as the two of you quietly exited her room and made your way back towards your room. “She just lit up and I thought she was going ta scream when she saw the limo.” His voice was soft and quiet as he made his way towards his closet.

“Did she love the restaurant?” You asked as you sat at the edge of the bed. Harry appeared in the doorway of the master bathroom now just in his trousers and button up shirt that he was working on unbuttoning.

“Of course, but the best bit was when she got her flowers she told me she thought flowers were just for her Mommy and Nana. I told her she was one of my special girls as well so she deserves flowers of her own.” You smiled as he talked while slipped off his shirt, you didn’t even care that he just let it fall to the floor instead of putting it in the hamper.

“I knew the two of you would have a great time.” You told him as you watched him slide his trousers off leaving them on the floor next to his shirt so that now he was just in his boxers before making his way to the bed. “She will remember this night forever H.” You added as he sat next to you on the bed, you placed your hand on the top of his bare thigh giving it a squeeze.

“As will I love,” you felt his arm wrap around your middle as he pulled you closer to him. “She loved the zoo, thought she was gonna ask me ta buy her a lion for a moment.” You giggled when you felt his breath on your neck before he placed a sweet kiss to your cheek.

“You would have.” You teased, the two of you both knew that Harry would drop as much money and move the heavens and earth for the little girl currently asleep in the room down the hall. “That’s why you’re such an amazing dad and she loves you so much.” You felt his grip on your waist tighten a little.

“She’s the amazing one love,” you placed a kiss to the side of his mouth causing his lips to twitch up into a little crooked smirk. “She makes being a dad easy, I jus want to make her smile all the time and protect her from anything that could take that smile away.” You smiled as his eyes lit up as he talked about his love for his daughter. You knew the two of them had a very special bond, it just proved that Harry was indeed an amazing dad.

“Well I’m glad the two of you enjoyed your time together H.” You told him before you rested your head on his shoulder, you felt him place a kiss to the top of your head making you smile.

“Did ya miss me?” You rolled your eyes as you felt his hand slowly begin to creep down from your waist towards your hip. You lifted your head off his shoulder and when you saw the slight smirk on his face you just shook your head.

“Didn’t even notice you were gone.” You joked and Harry’s face slightly dropped and you just shot him a smile before giving his thigh a slight pat. “Okay, I might have missed you just a little bit.” You lifted your free hand up and brought your pointer finger and thumb together to show him how much.

“Oh jus a little bit hmm?” Soon his face was in your neck giving it sloppily kisses causing you to laugh as he grabbed your waist and pulled you onto his lap. “I love you.” His voice was low in your ear and you just smiled as he placed a kiss right below your ear.

“I love you too H.” You felt him smile against your neck as you snuggled into his chest. You could’ve stayed like that all night, you loved how the two of you always managed to meet at the end of the bed telling each other about your days. You loved watching his eyes light up when he talked about his daughter and you just couldn’t help but smile when he would gush over how much he loved the two of you. The truth was you loved Harry so much you truly didn’t know what you would do without him along with the little girl that was asleep down the hallway after an exciting Daddy daughter date, the two of them were the lights of your life and you wouldn’t change it for the world.

anonymous asked:

can you write something about Harry being a private person and not opening up to you even though you're dating him, thanks!

WOOOWOWW my very first request ever this is unbelievable. Thank you so much for this prompt and I hope you enjoy it! And to the anon that asked about me writing angst earlier: I lied because I did not think I would be writing angst any time soon but then this happened so I think it kind of fits the criteria????

You’re sat in Harry’s apartment, idly flipping through a magazine while you wait for him to come out of the shower. He comes out with a towel wrapped around his waist, small droplets of water running down the sides of his arms.

“Are you not getting ready for the opening of that new nightclub downtown? A-lists only, apparently.” You had seen the invitation that he’d receive in the mail, and Harry hadn’t gone out in so long that you figured he would go.

“Don’t want to, not my type of nightclub,” he replied while he shakes the ends of his hair out. “There’s only certain ones that I’d go to.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that.”

Now that you think about it, there are a lot of things you don’t know about Harry. You’ve been together for two months now and sure, it’s still early in the relationship and you’re not supposed to know everything about him, but you’re not sure if you know more than what the rest of his fans know about him.

When you think back on the conversations you’ve had with Harry you realize that they’ve all been about you- things you can’t stand, what you wanted to do with your future, places you wanted to visit. It was always about you, and while you appreciated the attention that Harry gave you, you were curious as to why he never gave you that much detail about himself.

Do you even know what his favorite dish is? Or his favorite color? His favorite anything?

Harry must’ve seen the frown on your face because he moves to sit down next to you on the sofa.

“Everything alright, love?”

“What’s your favorite color?” You suddenly ask him.

He looks taken back for a second. “Where are we going with this?”

It’s not exactly the answer you were looking for, so you hesitate before answering him.

“I just feel like I don’t know those little things about you, like I don’t know you well enough.”

“You know tons of stuff about me. I’m from Cheshire, I used to be a baker-“

“Everyone knows that about you, Harry, it’s all over your Wikipedia page,” you interrupt him. “I’m not asking you to tell me all of your secrets. I just feel like we’ve only been talking about me, and I want to talk about you now.”

Harry moves his fingers to the corner of his mouth and tugs on his bottom lip. You can see him finding the right words to say before the slowly gets them out.

“I used to not have any secrets, like the world used to know everything about me. I didn’t like it.”

“I understand if you want to be private with the media and the public but I’m not them. I can’t keep dating you if you won’t open up to me. It’s like you keep to yourself because you don’t see us going anywhere.”

You haphazardly toss the magazine on the marble coffee table in front of you, turning your full attention to Harry. You’re in this relationship for the long run, and if Harry only saw this as a temporary fling, then you couldn’t do it.

“Do you see this going anywhere?” You press.

Harry remains silent, and the frown that’s taken over his face tells you that his answer isn’t one that you’re going to like.

You scoff before reaching for your keys on coffee table. “Don’t forget to lock the door,” You tell him as you get up to leave his flat.

-

Where are you?
Need to see you

You put your phone down as soon as you finish reading the messages that Harry sent. You take half a sip of your coffee before your stomach churns and you have to put the cup down. It’s been three days since you walked out of Harry’s apartment and you hadn’t heard from him until now. The knot in your stomach still lingers from the last conversation you two shared. Your relationship with Harry was coming to its end; you could feel it. Or had it ended already? Did it end when you walked out of his apartment earlier that week? Perhaps he wants to see you so that he could break up with you properly.

You decide that you have to face him eventually. Five minutes pass before you pick your phone up again to reply to Harry’s texts.

Alfred’s on Melrose. I’m alone, you can come by.

Fifteen minutes later you see Harry walk into the coffee shop with a book tucked under his arm. He pulls his sunglasses to the top of his head and slowly scans the room before waking towards your table and pulling out the chair across from yours.

You wait for him to sit down before you speak.

“If you’re going to break up with me I’d rather it not happen in public,” you don’t mean for the words to come out so bitterly, but they do.

“M’not gonna break up with you, I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself if I let you go.”

Your heart skips a beat when he says it. This is the Harry that you know, the Harry that you’re falling for, but you’re not going to let his sweet words mask the fact that you still don’t know him as much as you’d like.

“It’s been a while since I’ve had a proper relationship,“ he continues speaking after running his fingers through the top of his hair. “Been a long time actually. I really like you and I don’t want to mess this up, but I think I’ve built my walls so high that it’s become difficult to take them down.”

Harry looks down and fiddles with the ring on his middle finger before picking the book up from his lap and sliding it across the table in your direction. When you get a better look at like you notice that it’s a leather journal that’s a bit torn up at the spine.

“This is my journal. I write everything in here. Lyrics, inspiring events, things that I like and I want to remember. I’ve never fully shown anyone it’s contents before. I mean, Mitch has seen a couple of pages when we were working on the album, but that’s just a snippet.”

You run your fingers over the leather cover and play with its edges. You look up to find Harry’s gaze, as if asking for permission to flip to the first page.

“Go ahead, take a look. I want you to know me as much as I’m getting to know you, and I think this is as personal as I can get.”

When you flip to the first page there’s a sketch of a flower and a some lines that you recognize from his songs. You quickly glance at the next few pages before your eye catches your own name scribbled about a dozen times on one page.

When you look up from the journal, you find Harry leaned back in his chair with a grin plastered across his face.

“Ask me anything, I’m an open book.”

Fics to make you smile

Sorted by length, will be updated as I find more fics

❤ For Effort - When Harry Styles lets his team down during gym class, resulting everyone having to run laps, he expects the worst. But the backlash never comes.Harry’s crush, Louis Tomlinson, may or may not have something to do with that. (one shot, 2k)

Whisk You Away - “Okay, so you met your high school crush, Harry Stills–” “Styles.” “Not for long,” Niall said in a sing-song tone, and Louis threw a chip at his face. It landed on top of his head. Niall grabbed it and put it in his mouth. “Anyway, so he is getting married tomorrow and invites you to help him bake a cake.” “Mhmm.” “And you accept. You can’t bake. And you can’t even make pancakes…Bravo.” Or…Louis is quick at assuming the worst, only for the best thing to happen.  (one shot, 2k)

The Weirdest Bloody Ice Cream Shop - Harry made eye contact with Lou and noticed his eyes were very blue. “Well…” Harry started. “Because you have the same name as this shop. It’s a shop rule that everyone named Lou gets free fro-yo.” Lou’s lips turned up very slightly at each end. He was rather pretty when he wasn’t yelling at Harry. “Neat rule,” Lou said. “Too bad my name is Louis.” And with that Louis (not Lou) shoved a £10 note in the tip jar and walked out of Lou’s Frozen Yoghurt with his probable sister. Probably forever. Harry sighed and looked at his watch. He had two hours left before he could close up, and, as it would turn out, he thought about the cute, angry boy named Louis for most of them. OR the frozen yoghurt au in which harry accidentally accuses louis of wanting to date a 5 year old and louis keeps calling frozen yoghurt ice cream (one shot, 3k)

Crush on My Croissant - Every morning at 6:50am the most attractive man in the world walks into Harry’s bakery and orders a chocolate croissant. What happens when Harry finally decides it’s time to take things to the next level? (one shot, 3k, part of a small series)

took my heart upon a one way trip - in which, louis needs help with a poetry assignment and harry can’t stop staring at the pretty boy who walked into his bookshop. the other three are in there too. (one shot, 4k)

Only Reason - “We are so lucky to have with us one of the leading experts on beekeeping in the modern age, Dr. Louis Draper.”
No. No, no, no…
“I know I speak for many of us when I say that this man’s books have guided our practice, or helped us get started,” Harry continued, and Louis watched as the crowd nodded their heads in agreement.
Oh shit. No. What? No.
But then Harry was gesturing towards him, saying “Dr. Draper?” into the microphone, the crowd was applauding, and Louis found himself walking up the stairs to the stage. Or, Louis is most definitely smitten with Harry from the second he sees him, but he is also most definitely not the world’s foremost expert on beekeeping. He decides to roll with it anyway
.  (one shot, 5k)

I made a map of your stars - Harry does not have a crush on Louis Tomlinson. Yes, Louis is very pretty and funny, and Harry may have had more than a few inappropriate thoughts about him, but he certainly doesn’t like him. (Except for the fact that he totally does.)

or, Harry is the shy boy in the back of the class that no one really notices. Louis is the loud, outgoing football player that everybody likes.
 (one shot, 5k)

you make my whole world feel right when it’s wrong - “Curly?” Louis says, stepping into Harry’s sight. “You okay?”
Harry looks up from where he has two things in his hands, a thick winter coat sized for a newborn, and a sweatshirt fitting a grown man such as himself. He looks up at Louis, stricken, and holds them out for him to see. “They’re the same price,” he says. “They’re both forty dollars! Forty dollars for such little material.” (or, Harry is pregnant and stops at the mall to buy cheap baby clothes. Louis has extra money from working a long shift, and he can’t think of a better way to spend it than on him.)
(one shot, 6k)

come on, jump out at me - Harry is a witch from a long line of power, an ancient line that’s one of the strongest left alive in their hemisphere. He can cast spells without a word if need be, fly on a broomstick, and has a black cat (a kitten, really) named Felix that is his animal familiar. He can shape galaxies in his cupped hands and can destroy them just as easily. He can choose exactly how to use his power, for encouragement and support, or for more nefarious causes if he wishes to. And as fate would have it, he’s scared of haunted houses. (Harry is a witch who carries around a stuffed pumpkin, Louis is a vampire with too much time on his hands, and their best mates Zayn & Niall aren’t exactly what they seem…)  (one shot, 7k, part of a continuing and very good series )

Worth a Thousand Words - “Look, I’m learning some new stuff!” My name is Louis. My favorite color is green. I like movies. Do you know sign language?Harry huffed grumpily. Why are you learning sign language? “Because, I want to be able to talk to you.” Louis looked small, gripping tightly at the steering wheel. Why?    You’re my friend. Louis signed shakily, having to try it a few times before getting it right. And well, Harry just snapped. We’re not friends. I don’t know what makes you think that we’re okay but we’re not. You stopped being my friend once you found out that I went deaf. I don’t know if this is your way of ‘making up for it’ or if you think that hanging out with the deaf guy and learning a bit of sign language is your ‘kind deed’ to the world but I don’t want to be your charity case and I don’t want to be your friend.
or Harry went deaf at 5 years old and Louis just wants the chance be heard. (one shot, 7k, bit of angst but mostly fluff)

Tentatively - The whole university was anxiously waiting for the final weeks of the semester to wrap up, the taste of the summer already hanging sweetly and tempting in the air. Harry was right there in the thick of it all, getting distracted by the very same feline-born he had been crushing on ever since the beginning of uni. Harry had absolutely no plans to ever approach the boy. Ever.
But clearly the Universe (or the boy) wasn’t a fan of Harry having any control over his own damn life. -Or, Louis is a feline-born, and Harry’s big dumb crush on him is so massive he doesn’t know what to do with himself.
(one shot, 8k)

Love Is a Kitten from Hell - Louis Tomlinson passes himself off as an arrogant prick at his new school to hide the fact that he’s terrified of being bullied again. Just when he’s getting tired of putting up walls, he finds himself in a local pet shop where he finds a sanctuary playing with the kittens in the front window. Harry Styles is the popular football player who works at the pet shop, secretly watching the boy he thought was utterly unlikable prove him wrong. Partnered together for a class project, Harry gets more and more hints that Louis is actually someone worth getting to know. But the real question is, will Louis let Harry in? (one shot, 8k)

When the Lion Met the Fawn - Maybe lions are meant to hunt fawns, but in this case was the fawn who hunted the lion. (Or the one where Louis Tomlinson is a natural fighter without a fight and Harry Styles is a fawn hybrid too scared to stay but even more scared to run away. He gives Louis a reason to fight for)  (one shot, 9k)

but he can’t be what you need (if he’s eighteen) - “I need you to do something for me.” Harry said, pinching his bottom lip between his thumb and forefinger. “It seems like you’re asking me to kill for you, H.” Louis laughed nervously. “It’s nothing that drastic, I promise. It’s just. I don’t think it’s a secret that I’m not a.. normal eighteen year old.” Louis furrowed his eyebrows at that, narrowing his eyes at the younger boy. “Are people giving you a hard time?” Louis wondered. Harry shifted in his seat and brushed some of his fringe off his forehead. “Yeah, that’s. That’s kind of what I wanted to talk to you about.” Harry swallowed nervously. He could feel the sweat pooling at his hairline so he wiped it with the sleeve of his sweater. “I need you to uhm, pretend to be my boyfriend.” or the one where harry is sick of getting bullied and casts louis as the hot punk boyfriend to scare them away. louis needs harry to return the favor. punk!louis and flowerchild!harry (one shot, 10k)

set alight my veins - If Liam really thinks it’s funny to send him on a surprise date with a tattooed, leather wearing punk then Harry’s going to have words with him later. When he’s managed to stop staring at the guy across from him.-Harry’s quiet and shy and does all his homework. Louis drives motorbikes and never turns up to school. Their respective friends think they’d be a cute couple. (one shot, 11k)

Hold My Heart - “Excuse me, mate, I’m the window seat here.” The voice was soft, apologetic, and accented in something a bit unfamiliar — northern England, maybe, Harry thought. “Oh,” Harry jumped to his feet and moved aside, “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you standing there.” The other man laughed as he swung a bag into the overhead compartment and slid into the seat. “You were well caught up in that book, mate. What are you reading?” Harry paused, wondering how to explain the fact that he was reading an epic and x-rated romance that was the story of a relationship between a prince and the man he’d enslaved. “Oh, you know, just some fiction my sister recommended.” He turned to look at the man and froze.Sitting next to him was Louis Tomlinson.*** Or, the one where famous Louis Tomlinson offers his hand and a lot more to his seat mate on a transatlantic flight. (one shot, 14k)

The Edge of the Stars - Louis laughed. “You think you can convince some random guy to want to go out with me?” “Oh baby,” Jay chuckled. “I can convince all of the UK to want to go out with you.” Or, a Meet the Parents AU where Harry is the man of Louis’ dreams, and it’s up to Jay to convince him to date her son. (one shot, 16k)

the love is ours to make (so we should make it) - “I’m.. Harry. I nanny? For Ernest and Doris?” Harry responded. “A nanny? How old even are you? You look twelve.” Louis remarked. Something caught Louis’ eye, and a closer look revealed that Harry had a coat of pink nail polish on his fingers. “Nineteen. I’m nineteen.” Harry replied. “Right. Nineteen, wears pink, flower crowns and paints his nails. Who the actual fuck did my mum hire?” or the one where louis takes some time off from life to return home, only to be met with a strange boy in pink and a flowercrown as the nanny of his siblings.  (one shot, 19k, some sad parts but still really cute)

Heart Without A Home - Louis is staying at the shelter when a late entry pulls at his conscience and he decides to share his precious bed with the mysterious Harry. The pair somehow find an instant bond but Louis can’t help but feel Harry is hiding something…Featuring Zayn as a chef, Perrie as the shelter manager and Liam as a helper- and Louis’ best mate.  (one shot, 20k, this is kind of angsty but it still made me smile)

Away With The Fairies - Harry liked pretty things. Mostly the ornate flowers that grew around him, the trees majestically climbing towards the sky, sometimes the little colourful birds that flitted around in the branches of those trees. Harry’s wings themselves were considered beautiful, big butterfly-like shaped things glistening pink in the light but white underneath, almost translucent. He fluttered them behind him, feeling the breeze brushing off them. He was high up where he could see the most, studiously watching the human life on the ground below. He shouldn’t be here of course, he was beyond the borders of the part of the forest where his kind lived, but he couldn’t help it. Because Harry had found the prettiest thing of all. (one shot, 22k, you should read everything by this author)

faith, trust and pixie dust (and a little bit of something else too)** - “Are you seriously apologizing for taking out a bullet that was lodged in my shoulder and saving my life?” he asks slowly. “Y—yes?” the boy looks unsure of himself now. “Marry me—” For once, the boy isn’t the only one blushing and Louis silently curses Earthen terminology for making its way into his vocabulary. Taking a deep breath to regain his composure, he coughs out, “I mean thanks. That was very nice of you…?” “Harry,” the boy fills in quietly, flashing Louis a tentative smile. Louis thinks it suits him well and he mouths the name to himself, liking the way it rolls off his tongue. He watches as Harry hesitates before asking his own question, albeit doubtfully. “And you’re—you’re P—Peter Pan, right?” Or, the one in which Louis is a punk Peter Pan and Harry is an insecure flower child.  (one shot, 27k, quite a bit of angst but Harry’s character was too cute for me to not include)

with your love we could breathe underwater - Harry’s brow furrows, a look of confusion spreading over his face. “But I am real. I exist, see,” he says, raising a hand out of the water and wiggling his fingers at Louis. Louis finds himself relaxing a bit. Harry seems harmless really. And he’s quite cute, for something that’s not supposed to exist. If Louis is indeed having a hallucination right now, at least it’s a cute one. AU where Harry is a mermaid, Louis is a human, and they both discover a lot more than they anticipated. (one shot, 28k)

Title: Life Changing ( Part 2 ) 《 Part 1

Summary
Now that the whole school knows about Y/N and Peter, a lot of things change and they have to explain Ned what happened.

Words: ~ 1400

A/N: I accidentally just deleted this but luckily, I still had a copy! I’m so glad because I’m actually proud of this series. (Part 3 is almost finished!)

“Look… it’s not that we don’t want to be your friends anymore but-”
I rolled my eyes before I interrupted one of my so called friends, “You don’t need to end that sentence. It’s either you or Peter. I get it…”

I didn’t need to think about it for a long time. 3 seconds most. “I guess it’s good bye then.”, I mumbled, turning around and pushing my science book closer to my chest.
I slowly made my way through the big cafeteria, trying to hide my oncoming tears.
Sure, I could’ve just stayed with them but Peter would probably be a punching bag again if I did. Besides I finally had what I wanted. And I was happy to say that I was dating Peter.
Although, It hurt that my friends wanted me to decide. And it hurt that I wasn’t cool enough for them anymore. But that’s how highschool works, I guess.

But as soon as I saw Peter’s back facing me, his curly hair looking as cute as ever, I felt a smile forming on my face while he was talking to his best friend Ned.
“You’ve had a crush on her for months and now I hear it from Michelle? Because you didn’t tell me?”, Ned wanted to know, hysterically gesturing with his hands.
“Ned, it wasn’t… it’s complicated.”, Peter sighed and ran his right hand through his brown curls.

I was standing behind them by now, putting my book on the table and my right hand on his shoulder before leaning down to hug him from behind. “Hi, Peter.”
He had jumped slightly but melted into me when he heard my voice.
“Hi, Y/N.”, he smiled softly after I sat down next to him, his brown eyes staring into mine. I quickly cupped his face with my hands to press my lips on his, making him breathe in audibly. I felt shivers running down my back from this little kind of affection and smiled into the kiss before I pulled back.

This kiss may have lasted for a couple of seconds but for me it was already enough to release me from all the negative thoughts.

“I still have to get used to that.”, Peter chuckled and my eyes furrowed in confusion. “Huh?”
“Being able to kiss you. And not just… daydreaming about it.”, he admitted, nervously fiddling with his fingers with his eyes fixed on the empty plate in front of him.
My heart had skipped a beat because of his words. He was too precious for this world.
“You’re so cute.”, I wispered before my hand reached up, my fingertips brushing through the strands over his ear. Peter looked at me again, happiness being visible in his hazel eyes.

I saw Ned awkwardly eating the rest of his lunch, shifting on his seat, and Peter noticed it too. “Sorry, Ned.”, he said apologetically and Ned nodded before he gave us a smile.
“It’s okay. I am happy for you. But I don’t get why you didn’t tell me.”
Peter looked at me briefly, his hand finding mine under the table before he interwined our fingers. Peter opened his mouth to say something but I interrupted him, “You can’t tell anyone, Ned. Okay?”

Ned only nodded and Peter began to explain, “Remember that letter I wrote? Yeah, Flash found it and read it out loud. The whole hallway heard it and Y/N was there, too.”
“Flash was making fun of him and I was so pissed that Flash treated him that way, so I just kissed Peter. I wanted to prove Flash wrong and let him be the dumb one for once.”, I continued and Ned nodded while Peter was staring at me with this cute look.

“Ah, so you just act like a couple to annoy Flash!”, Ned said and I rolled my eyes.
“What? No, we’re not!”, Peter exclaimed but then turned his heads towards me with a worried expression on his face, “Or are we…?”
“Peter, we are dating.”, I chuckled and Peter sighed in relief, “In case you didn’t notice: I’m in love with you, you dork.”
Peter chuckled and looked at the table again, mouth open but no words came out and the corner of his mouth going up. He smiled at me, then looked at Ned and back at me. He was speechless.

“You’re still loosers.”, Michelle interrupted our conversation making Peter and Ned turn their head towards her, their faces expressing ‘What the fuck?’
“Just because you’re dating Y/N doesn’t mean you’re popular now.”, she claimed and Peter shrugged, obviously not caring about that. But I did. I cared that my friends didn’t want to hang out with me anymore.
“You okay?”, Peter whispered while Ned came up with a sassy comment. “Yeah, it’s nothing.”, I mumbled quickly, maybe too quickly.

Peter’s eyes seemed to look for the truth in my own eyes, he tightened his grib on my hand before his other hand brushed over my arm.
I felt safe with him and I enjoyed being able to show him my vulnerable side. But a room filled with teenagers wasn’t exactly the best place.
It seemed like Peter had read my mind, suddenly nodding slightly after my gaze wandered through the cafeteria. “You want to come over after school?”, he asked softly and my answer was a nod, followed by a smile.

The bell rang and I grabbed my book before I stood up, Peter and Ned doing the same.
Peter’s arms were wrapped around my neck only seconds later and I put my hands on his back.

This was our first real hug. I was awkwardly holding my book in one hand while people started to run around in the cafeteria, trying to get to their next period.
But still, this hug gave me the needed strength.
Peter’s warmth embraced me and I felt his hot breath against the side of my neck, sending shivers down my spine. My cheek was pressed against his collar bone and my face buried in his neck while his chin rested on my shoulder. This was the moment I realised that our bodies simply fitted together in the perfect way. He wasn’t much taller than me and that was perfect.
It felt like time froze, nothing mattered and that was perfect.

He loosened the hug to smile at me, his eyes fixed on my lips before he pecked them.
“Peter, we gotta go.”, Ned reminded him and he blushed slightly as he nodded, giving me a reassuring smile before he and Ned went the other way.
“You’re one lucky guy.”, I heard Ned say and I chuckled as I watched them doing their handshake.

But Peter didn’t leave the cafeteria without turning around again and slightly waving at me.

After what felt like years the bell rang and school was finally over.
I packed all of my stuff in my backpack before swinging it over my shoulder and entering the hallway.
I was thankful for all the pupils that minded their own business and rolled my eyes at those who stared at me.
Me and Peter dating was like a big impossibility that somehow still happened and nobody seemed to understand what made it happen.

Peter already stood at the front entrance of our school, waiting for me impatiently. A smile formed on his face when he saw me, approaching him and he instantly took my hand in his when I stood in front of him. “Hey.”, he chuckled before he pressed a kiss on my lips and I greeted him too.
We hadn’t seen each other since lunch but it seemed like an eternity and Peter started rambling about his day almost immediately.

The entire train ride to his home I couldn’t help but stare at his face, admiring him and loving the way he couldn’t stop talking about his favorite movies.
He also told me that he recently found a dvd player and started doing - I already forgot what it was but I was totally amazed by his knowledge.
I had almost forgot about telling my parents about my spontaneous trip to Peter and sent them a message so they wouldn’t worry.

A/N: Let me know if you guys enjoy this!  Maybe there will be a few more parts if enough people request!

The warm sun felt toasty on your face, as you wrapped your cardigan tightly around you; the brisk crisp fall air of Boston giving you slight chills.  You were sat at a bench, overlooking the beautiful serene water of Boston Public Garden.  It was your favorite place to visit as a child, and because of that, you knew you had to move here.

Growing up in a small farm town in Iowa had been wonderful; at least in your eyes.  Most people hated it, and others would probably dread having to live in such an isolated, nothing to do, small hick town.  But you were an imaginative, adventurous child; always reading books and imagining you were in the main characters place.  You were also a romantic and it was easy to be one in a small town.  The boys were raised right by their parents; true gentlemen, which was hard to find nowadays.

You’d met Bucky a year ago in the small cafe you worked in, the same one you’d worked at since you were sixteen and you had no reason not to love your job. You loved talking to the regulars, people whose orders you had memorized and had ready the second they walked in. You loved meeting people from all walks of life; wealthy business owners constantly on the phone debating their next deal, tired mothers who just needed a caffeine fix to get through the day, broke college students looking for a cheap food option between the expensive restaurants that New York city offered.

F/B: Favorite book

As Saturday got closer, you became more and more excited.

Draco Malfoy!  You thought.  Asked me out on a date!

You’d maybe been on one or two dates before, and it didn’t end up going anywhere.  You liked Draco.

A lot.

And now you were about to go on a date with him.  You wanted to try and get to know him better, and he wanted to do the same with you.  Whenever you passed him in a corridor, he would grin at you and wave, you responding with a shy smile.  Hey, better than nothing.

When Saturday finally arrived, you stood out on the path to Hogsmeade; wrapped in a F/C coat and your house scarf.m  Snowflakes drizzled down onto your hair as you bounced back and forth on your heels, boots crunching in the snow.  You shivered from the crisp cold and sighed, your breath visible in the air.

You turned around when you heard footsteps coming up from behind you.  There was Draco, clad in black and his Slytherin scarf wrapped around his neck.  “Hello, Y/N,” he said, approaching you.  “Shall we get going?” he held out his arm for you and you linked your arm in his.

“We shall,” you replied in a joking manner.

Draco smiled and you both began walking towards Hogsmeade.  At one point you slipped on a patch of ice, but luckily Draco was there to catch you.

“Th-thanks,” you said, still a bit shocked from nearly crashing onto the ground.

“You’re welcome, love.”

Holy shit did he just call me love?  You thought, heart racing.

You both talked nonsense about Hogwarts and your classes as you made your way to the Three Broomsticks where you each bought a butterbeer and then sat down at a table near the fireplace.

Draco took a sip of his butterbeer.  “So, Y/N.  I always see you carrying around a stack of books that aren’t for school or from the library.  What exactly are there?” he asked, genuinely intrigued.

You raised your eyebrows at this.  “Oh–uh–they’re… they’re books from the muggle world.  I’ve grown rather fond of them, really.  They speak of wizards and magic as if they’re nothing more than a child’s fantasies.”

“What are some of your favorites?”

“Well… F/B. F/B, and F/B I’ve grown attached to.”

“Would you mind letting me borrow some of them one day?”

That shocked you.  Now, normally you wouldn’t let anyone touch your prized books.  But someone was actually interested in them for once.  And that person just happened to be Draco.  “Uh… sure.  Yes, of course you can.”

He smiled.  “Thanks.”

It was your turn to ask a question.  “So, Draco.  Do you have a favorite musical instrument?”

“The violin, I suppose.  I’ve always liked the elegant sound.”

You nodded.  “My mother used to play the violin when I was a child.  She still does.”

“I’d love to hear her play sometime,” Draco replied.

“And she’d love to meet you sometime,” you said out of nowhere, covering your mouth with your hand as soon as you realized what you had said.

Draco chuckled.  “Don’t worry, Y/N.  I think that was cute.”

You blushed and turned your glance to your feet.  “I’m kind of bad with conversation…”

He gently lay his hand over yours on the table; making you look back up.  “So am I.”

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” you joked.

He shrugged and laughed.  “I guess.  Aren’t I sweet?”

“Yes, you are.”

“Fantastic.  Should we start heading back to Hogwarts?” He suggested.

“Probably,” you answered.  You stood up from your seats and made your way to the front door, him holding the door for you.  “Ah, such a gentleman.”

He smirked.  “M’lady,” he said as you stepped out of the Three Broomsticks.

Draco took your gloved hand in his and began walking with you, leaving two pairs of footprints behind.

As you made your way back to Hogwarts, Draco removed his hand from yours and placed it around your shoulder.  When he did that, you brought up a hand to hold his hand where it was around your shoulder, leaning into him.

When you got back to Hogwarts, you were about to go back to your house common room, when Draco grabbed your hand.  You turned around.

“I had fun.  Really.  Thank you for coming with me,” Draco said earnestly.

You smiled.  “So did I.”  You then made a bold move, and quickly leaned in to place a quick kiss on Draco’s lips.  He just stood there with a bit of a surprised look.  You blushed immensely.  “I-I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have done th–”

Draco cut you off by leaning in again and kissing you.  This time harder, more

Passionate.  Draco wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you even closer to him so that your chests were touching.  You ran your fingers through his hair as his tongue slid over your lip.  Suddenly, Professor McGonagall popped her head out of a tower window.  “No public displays of affection on school grounds!”

You and Draco pulled away and looked up at her, smiling.  McGonagall shook her head and went back into the tower.  You and Draco turned back to each other.

“Care to go somewhere more private?” Draco smirked.

“I’d love to.”

Please let me know what you thought of it and what I could do better next time!
