Introduction: Hi! I’m Annie, I recently graduated as valedictorian of a class of almost 700, and I’m about to be a freshman at Johns Hopkins (go blue jays!!). High school was some of the best and worst moments of my life, and looking back, there are so many things that I wish I’d done and things that made me successful, so I wanted to share them! Of course, disclaimer, these tips may not apply to everyone!

(These tips generally apply to all classes, but if you have a specific subject you want tips on, I’ve taken these AP courses: european history, world history, us gov’t, macroeconomics, lang, lit, calc ab, chemistry, physics 1, physics c, environmental science, art: drawing, biology, human geography, chinese, and art history. Feel free to message me!)

College applications are a crapshoot- I can’t begin to tell you the number of incredible, brilliant people with extraordinary, international level achievements that got denied at top schools in favor of those lacking those accomplishments. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean those who got in don’t have qualities that earned them a spot, it just speaks to the unpredictable nature of the college application process. When deans of admission at top schools openly say they could reject all admitted students and build the same exemplary class from the waitlist, or that they have enough qualified applicants to fill 3 or 4 classes with, there’s a certain amount of luck involved. Therefore I urge all rising seniors to go into this process realizing that the odds are not in your favor. I went into the process with too much blind hope, too confident in my ability to be that lucky 1 in 10 (or less) that would gain admission, and I was sorely disappointed. So that leads me to my next tip…

Don’t do things just for your college application- Those slim acceptance rates are the exact reason I urge you not to join things solely for how good they look on a college application. It seems counterintuitive; wouldn’t they give you a better chance of acceptance? However, my point is not to dissuade you from extracurriculars, but rather to commit to ones that genuinely make you happy. As I wrote above, the process is so competitive that even international achievements may mean rejection, so don’t waste your high school experience by dedicating so much time and effort to something that you feel obligated to do.

Try everything your freshman and sophomore year- My biggest regret is not joining clubs where my passions lie simply because I was too lazy or scared of things like public speaking my freshman year. It’s much more intimidating to join as upperclassmen, and you may not be able to participate at all the levels/in all the ways people who have dedicated 3-4 years can. Even if you don’t think its for you (like debate for me because of my fear of public speaking), I urge you to expand your horizons and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Many clubs give you great opportunities to build leadership, public speaking, etc. skills and to find your passions.

Know both sides of the flashcard- I learned this tip from my organic chemistry class, and I’d never though about how useful it is. For example, if you’re memorizing polyatomic ions, it’s extremely important that you know both the formula and the name, as either version may show up on the exam. Not doing this also makes the weaknesses in your memorization evident- whenever I study vocab, I tend to glance at the side with the term and only memorize the definition. This meant that when I was given only the definitions, I couldn’t remember the word they defined, because I was so used to being given the vocab word and responding with the definition.

The first lecture of the unit is one of the most important for STEM classes- I know the beginning of the unit can often seem like the perfect time to tune out, as it goes over information you’ve previously learned or the easiest material of the topic, but it often forms the foundation for everything else in the unit. For example, the first lecture on a stoichiometry unit will probably teach you dimensional analysis, a skill integral to calculating molecular or empirical formulas, moles or grams of a substance, etc.

Buy/sell books secondhand- Everyone knows how expensive college textbooks are, but between SAT and AP prep books, and books for English, high school books can cost quite a bit of money too. Unless they redesigned the exam recently, you absolutely don’t need the newest edition of the review book, so buy from upperclassmen and then sell it to underclassmen the following year.

Learn to self study- Unless you’re really lucky, you’re guaranteed to have a teacher who doesn’t teach, teaches badly, or whose teaching style just doesn’t work for you. Personally, I find that self learning, especially if I’m struggling because resources such as textbooks and online explanations, and videos seem to contradict, really helps me understand the topic throughly. In AP bio, my teacher had us create claymation videos on the processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis independently. It was incredibly frustrating and confusing because all the resources described the cycles in varying degrees of details, but I felt like I genuinely understood the topic, instead of having been spoon-fed the information and memorizing it. Obviously, this method isn’t very efficient for frequent use, but the key is to try to understand the material independently instead of going to the teacher the moment you hit a snag.

Keep your backpack/binders/notebooks reasonably organized- When teachers ask for homework to be passed up and you have to dig through mountains of papers in your backpack, not only is that super stressful, but a lot of teachers won’t let you turn it in after they have already collected all the papers. I was definitely guilty of being lazy and just stuffing papers, once I got them, into my backpack instead of taking a few seconds to slide them into a binder, and as a result I got 0s on lots of homework because either I couldn’t find it at the time or because everything was so messy I didn’t remember there was homework. Try to have some sort of organization system going on or at least a homework folder, because those 0s add up and can be the difference between an 89 and 90.

You’re gonna get senioritis, badly, and that’s ok- I’ve always been the type of person who did every homework assignment and was very focused on grades, so the idea that I would completely let myself ago seemed absurd to me. Don’t underestimate what senior year does to you. I can honestly count on one hand the econ worksheets that I actually turned in during senior year, and I made my first B in a grading period during the spring. I was very stressed about how awful my grades were, but unable to muster the energy to do anything about it. And you know what, it’s ok. It’s senior year, you can give yourself a break. Yes, your senior grades are still important for college applications, so don’t go from straight A’s to straight C’s, but for the most part, all the hard work is behind you. Do keep in mind that these habits may haunt you when you’re a college freshman. I haven’t started classes yet, but based on how little I studied for the math placement exam for my college, senioitis doesn’t magically end when you graduate, so don’t let it get completely out of control during the year.

Learn how to do math without a calculator- If you take either of the AP Calculuses or the SAT, you need to master this skill because there are sections of the exams that are strictly non-calculator.  Beyond that, when you get to calculus, you’ll be introduced to complicated concepts, where not being able to multiply by hand will drag you down.

Keep old notes- Not only for finals, but some topics are very interdisciplinary, like biochemistry, so it’s very important that you have a working knowledge of both biology and chemistry. As you take advanced classes, such as for me, taking physics c after physics 1, it will be assumed that you have completely mastered the basics, and they will be skipped or referenced very quickly. It is very useful to look at notes on the basics, which provide the foundation for the advanced material you learn.

Invest in a whiteboard- Whenever I was learning about processes or cycles, from the Krebs cycle to organic chemistry mechanisms, it was really useful to practice drawing the steps over and over again. Then when it came to the test, I could do a brain dump and draw out the information as a reference.

Understand formulas instead of blindly memorizing- This basically has physics and calculus written all over it. In physics, you should be given formula charts during exams, and in any case, something like F=ma isn’t terribly hard to memorize. The problem comes when there are a multitude of formulas that are derived from one of the fundamental equations. Of course, deriving from scratch each time is incredibly tedious, but I want to dissuade you from simply memorizing it or storing it on your calculator, because that means you probably don’t understand the physics behind it. What makes physics so difficult and different from any other subject you’ve taken is that every problem will have a slightly different scenario that tests your understanding of the physics behind it.

Use all the time given to you during tests- I know I hate looking back through my test because I just get so bored halfway through, but missing points because of silly mistakes is honestly the most frustrating thing ever when you had plenty of time to check. Depending on if I have time, I like to cover my original work and resolve the question. If checking answers is not your thing, try slowing now when you first see each question, and checking your work briefly each step.

Form study groups- Talking about something, especially teaching it to someone, always helped me remember something so much better than reading it on paper. It’s also so important to have second interpretations of the information you’re studying to ensure that you don’t make a huge misconception.

AP students: released/practice exams are your best friend- Obviously, they’re the best resources for studying for the AP exam, but they’re also a great tool for a hint at what your teacher’s tests may look like. AP teachers have access to tons of College Board material and will often use questions directly from old exams.

If you start getting confused during a lecture- Many times this is because I didn’t pay attention during the very beginning, so I’m missing that important foundation I talked about in the previous tip. Of course, I typically wouldn’t recommend doing things other than listening to what is currently being taught, but in this case, I would just get more confused and it’s a waste of time. So I discretely go back to my previous notes and focus on understanding them.

The most stressful part of schoolwork is just thinking about your assignments- There’s always specific period of time that threatens to kill me- a week where I had two competitions simultaneously, in cities 3 hours apart. When you’re taking 7 AP classes at the same time, just reading over your to-do list will make you want to cry. Even on a normal day, as I go to classes throughout the day and my list of homework gets longer and longer, it makes me so stressed to where I’m planning out how to finish everything and I’m no longer listening in class. It overwhelmed me so much that I just wanted to take a nap and avoid school. But every single time, stressing about the work I have is 1000x worse than sitting down and actually going through each task. I find that what had seemed impossible before was very doable, and many times I even finished early enough to relax before bed. Keep a positive mindset, don’t underestimate your abilities, and have the discipline to start working immediately on the hardest days, and you’ll be fine. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the workload that is able to be handled by one person can work for another, and things like mental illnesses are things I have no experience in, so this is definitely just something that worked for me and is not applicable to everyone.

Best of luck with high school! If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask!

A love of ice and thunder

Pairing: Loki x Thor x Reader.

Warnings: Smut and LOTS of it; a bit of drama too. There’s a lot of everything going on here so you might pick your blanket because this is also long af.

Summary: When Jane leaves Thor, in your heart you know he should stay with you, but as time goes by, his brother realizes that there is more to it.

A/N: I need Jesus, and when you finish reading this, you’re gonna need him too. My characters know they need Jesus, so that should tell you something. Feedback? It won’t hurt!

You poured some shampoo on your hand and gently started to massage your scalp with it. “So,” you started feeling the soft foam form in your hair, “I got a call from your brother yesterday,” you let the warm water run down your soapy self as you awaited for your boyfriend’s answer.

“Really? Thor knows how to make a phone call?” Loki snickered from the toilet seat. “Well, that is quite the surprise,” he shook his head.

“The thing is that he broke up with Jane just a few days ago and even though it wasn’t a lot, she’s given him some time to move out,” you casually said trying to elicit some kind of reaction from his uninterested being. “He’s really bummed, y’know?”

“I bet,” Loki pondered, “I’d be utterly destroyed if you dumped my ass,” he conceded, “but why are we talking about him anyway?”

“Well, I’ve been doing some thinking about it and… I wanted to ask you if he could stay here for a while,” you stuck your head from the end of the curtain and looked at him innocently. “I kinda owe him that…” you bit your bottom lip.

“How so?” He ran his fingers through his ebony hair.

“When SHIELD first sent me to the States I ended my renting contract with my landlord and I moved there, and when the agency died after the whole Winter Soldier thing I realized I had no home to go back to; Jane was still there and when your brother came to earth he stayed with her, so he asked Jane if I could live with them until I got my own place…” you sheepishly said as you rinsed the shampoo from your head. “I stayed there with them for like 4 months, so maybe he could stay here for that same time too, if you don’t mind,” you broke it down. “Can you pass me the towel, please?” You reached out your arm and he handed the soft cloth.

“What about our life?” He asked in a concerned voice. “I mean let’s face it, love; we are not the quietest ones and Thor isn’t either; he snores like a chainsaw,” he pointed out.

“Yeah, but we’ll have to be a bit more quiet and just… hold on?” You drew back the curtain and got out with Loki’s help. “Let me return him the favor, it’ll be for just a little, okay?” You looked at him with puppy eyes, it always worked with him. “Can we?”

“You’re gonna be the death of me,” he shook his head and unmade the towel, making it fall onto the humid tiles. “I might consider it,” he effortlessly lifted you in his arms, making you wrap your legs around his waist, “but only if you bribe me,” he mischievously smiled and headed for the room.

And just a few days after that, Thor was setting up this few belongings in the spare room of your apartment. He was really embarrassed for having to ask you that. He knew he was invading your privacy and your couple life with Loki, but he really didn’t have much choice or friends in the United Kingdom.

“It’s okay, big guy,” you placed a hand on his shoulder when he sat on the bed in defeat. “I know it hurts and all, but… you’ll be fine eventually, give it some time and you’ll see how things turn alright,” you shrugged lightly, “besides you’re living with us now, we’re gonna have fun!” You smiled widely and wrapped your arms around his shoulders. He rested his head on your chest and wrapped his arms around your waist. “Now come, and we’ll ask for something to eat for dinner,” you said.

4 QS WITH BTS

Q1: What’s your hobby or something you’re into recently, how do you spend your holiday?

A1: I’m enjoying playing FPS (First Person Shooter) games recently. Every day I play for 3-4 hours and in the blink of an eye it’s already time to sleep. (laughs) And I listen to music all the time. I listen to exciting music like the future base genre too, but I lean more towards moody and calming songs.

Q2: Tell us your fashion style or preference!

A2: I like big silhouette like hooded jackets and the color black. I don’t change my style that much even in summer. Although we have different styles, I think Rap Monster and J-hope are really cool because you can feel how they are from their way of dressing.

Q3: Favorite perfume?

A3: The fragrance of the wind or the green when spring comes. I once rode a bike along the riverside while listening to music together with Rap Monster and V on a spring day before. When I feel the distinctive air of the early spring, I would recall the memory of that day and get excited.

Q4: Favorite work among Japanese movies, dramas, mangas?

A4: I like Japanese animes and my favorite work, which is also what Jin’s currently into, is ‘Haikyuu!!’. It helps me learn Japanese too!

THIS IS ME

[Passion]

I’m the type to focus on something instantly once I feel like I want to do it, I want to accomplish it! Right now I’m into makng music so I’m learning diligently, even though it’s still far from releasing. My personality is to do what I like first and think of whether it’s going well or not later.

[Gourmet]

I like food! Especially meat. Chicken is my favorite. I like the food at Japanese convenience stores so much that I think about convenience stores every time I go to Japan (laughs) If I travel to Japan off work, I would stop by several times!

[Sleep]

I love sleeping so much. I’m into playing games so my sleep time has been cut off (laughs) If I have even just a little bit of time like in the car, I would nod off to sleep.

THIS IS HIM: JUNGKOOK is…

from J-HOPE

“A member with stronger desire to improve for music and dancing than others, but sometimes he also has the cute maknae-like side like a spoilt baby. I have to use my strength when I hug him since he’s tall, so I can sleep well. (laughs)

from JIMIN

“The maknae who works harder since he was young than any of the members. He’s the same age as my real brother so I look after him well, but at some point he has started to feel like my real brother. Whatever he does, he’s cute.”

Reasons you should be watching The Bold Type

The Bold Type is a new show on Freeform about three girls working at a feminist fashion magazine, just trying to live their lives. On first glance, it looks like the epitome of white feminism, but I think it will prove to be much more than that. Here’s some reasons too tune in:

1. Aisha Dee is in it. She’s amazeballs and if you haven’t seen her in Chasing Life or Sweet/Vicious, you’ve been missing out on life. She’s completely the reason I tuned in.

2. They had a Muslim woman actually explain why she wears her hijab. And why doing so makes her a feminist. When have you ever seen that before?

3. Did I mention that said hijab-rocking woman is a lesbian activist? Who it looks like is going to have a romance with Aisha Dee’s character?

4. They all work at a magazine and the boss is giving off serious Cat Grant vibes. Like badass woman with hardcore bonding heart-to-hearts with Katie Stevens’ character.

5. Oh yeah, Katie Stevens is totally in it. Faking It throwback anyone? She’s a new writer for the magazine who would rather cover serious topics than frilly ones.

6. They talk about owning your sexuality, with one of the girls standing up to her friends about it being her who gets to decide whom she sleeps with. Not to mention they talk about vaginas and vibrators. And a woman literally gets arrested for possessing sex toys.

7. THE FRIENDSHIP. The three main leads are adorably close. They bring champagne to work to celebrate a friend’s promotion, give random pep talks in the middle of the night, and help each other stalk exes, and its kinda hilarious?

8. I’m not going to deny it has some wrinkles to iron out, but if you don’t give it a chance to grow we may never see that. This is honestly the feminist show everyone is always wanting, so give it a chance before it goes the way of Sweet/Vicious, and we regret the missed opportunity.

as expected

I couldnt make this song with out namjoon hyung, right~
I’ve always wanted to write about the dawn too..
I like songs of styles like this, so I listened to them a lot and tried to sing them and make them and my song writing was on fire so I asked namjoon hyung, and because of him I got the beat I really wanted

since namjoon hyungs melody was so good, I tried writing with 6 different melodies
I thought of the topic ‘birds at dawn’
In the park with, one one else, just me and the morning birds, the time passing from 4 to 5 just before the sun rises, the bluish time was breif and it this time was so nice that I went to see it 5 days in a row
there I made the melody to the beat that namjoon hyund did, I don’t write lyrics well like namjoon but I tried putting my favourite feelings into the lyrics too

in the cold winter winds where the tired  sounds are ringing in the dark (quiet dawn)
you close your eyes to the sound of silence
fly
the birds at dawn cry worridly
fly
let me hear your voice fill this dawn

it’s like sending a letter to the birds of dawn but
I would have given up in the middles since I lack writing songs but thanks to namjoon hyung I was able to complete '4 o'clock’

I will try more songs for you to listen to in the future too
and vocal monster 👊🏻🤘🏻☺️
I will bring more songs for us to make in the future too☺️

Marc Guggenheim SDCC17 Interview

Marc Guggenheim was kind enough to meet with me for a one on one chat.

We walked the floor together with his nephew and little girl (who are the cutest) for an hour and talked all things Arrow!!! He told me this is his most aggressive SDCC schedule ever, so the fact that he slotted in some time just for me really meant the world. Marc Guggenheim is the actual best. He is the definition of it.

The Many Faces of Victor Nikiforov - Episode 2

And finally, the episode in which we actually get to know more about Victor personally! Although his expressions are generally very controlled, there are times where we can glean a greater understanding of his character from both the faces he does and doesn’t make. Continuing on from the first set, I’d like to talk about the gifs chosen this time too!

This first scene we see Victor in is played off as humour, but when looked at in a more serious light, it’s actually packed full of a complicated mix of emotions. Victor is leaving the home he has lived in for years and years. He’s leaving the familiar setting of his home rink and the people there who, by this point, would be pretty much considered family. When he looks back in this frame, we see a lot of things. Primarily, the look is fond but wistfully sad. He knows what he’s going to be leaving behind by going and he appreciates Yakov coming after him even if he isn’t planning on listening. He’s excited to start a new chapter of his life, even if it comes at a risk, but he is also scared. This frame may initially look like a simple smile but when you take off a couple layers, it really is so much more. It also shows the level of comfort he has with Yakov that he’s willing to let him see this expression in the first place.

This second gif… well, I can say more about Yuuri than Victor here. It takes 2 full gifs to capture the entire camera pan for this shot. The kicker being that not only does the shot start distinctly below the waistline, it also is a slow pan upwards even as Victor is talking. We know for a fact that this is from Yuuri’s point of view and the level of thirst that shows (like not even being able to meet Victor’s eyes when he’s talking directly to Yuuri) astounds me.

There are a few things I really love about this third one that I feel have gone either unappreciated or unnoticed. The first is that Victor is sleeping. That sounds like common sense, because of course he is, but my point is more the where and when. Victor is sleeping in an openly public space surrounded by people he doesn’t know in a country he isn’t familiar with. The second is that it’s probably about 2am local time in St. Petersburg by this point. What all this comes down to is that Victor is suffering from jet lag. We don’t see it often in-show since he seems to have himself more together in Barcelona (in compared to Yuuri who just sleeps) but I feel seeing it here makes him look all the more human. Another small thing to note is the little head rub he does onto his pillow as he turns over. This is a thing people do for comfort, the feeling of their cheek rubbing against their cheek is a sensation thing, and it, again, makes Victor seem more human and less of an untouchable god like Yuuri sees him as.

This fourth gif… What more can I say other than it still amazes me how forward Victor was this early on. Even after knowing about the banquet, he’s still so… direct. He is absolutely 100% trying to seduce Yuuri. It makes me wonder what exactly he expected would happen when he came to Japan and where he was planning to go from there when it came to the whole coaching deal.

This fifth gives me a lot of feelings. This is one of the only shots we get in the entire series that features Victor both alone and in a state of vulnerability. He’s in a foreign place, he doesn’t speak the language, and all he has to go on is a drunken promise and a viral youtube video. Even the creators have said that Victor isn’t really the type to cry so seeing tears in his eyes here means a lot. He’s scared, he’s lost, and he doesn’t know where to go next – in more than just the short term. He’s feeling like his entire life is falling apart around him and he left his lifeline and security net back in Russia. But, if nothing else, we can be glad that he brought Makkachin along because I don’t even what to think about how he would have fared without even that tiny bit of home.

The sixth gif I love because of its simplicity. Victor is excited by nothing more than exploring a new place. It’s not news to any of us that Victor loves surprises; he loves things that are new and Hasetsu castle provides just that. I love that Victor got the opportunity to experience the joys of being a tourist before he finally settles down to be a citizen.

I feel that this seventh gif has many layers. He’s obviously trying to be friendly but you can tell that he was wholly unprepared for the attention that he was suddenly swarmed with. You can see it in the way he smiles, it’s not the bright smile and wink that we normally associate with his media persona, and his shoulders keep climbing up and up. Tack onto the fact that there’s almost no way he could understand what any of them are saying and all I can really sense from him is tension and stress. Again, it comes back to him feeling like he’s out of place in a foreign land and is trying to handle it as best he can in the only ways he knows how.

This eighth gif is his thinking face. He consistently holds his hand to his chin in the same way whenever he’s seriously thinking about or considering something. In this case, we can take this to mean that he is sincerely studying Yuuri. Unlike earlier in the episode that attempts to paint Victor is a more lighthearted and flighty light, this shows us that he is there for more than just a booty call. He’s serious about wanting to be Yuuri’s coach and help him with his skating. He’s interested in Yuuri both as a person and a skater.

This second last gif is actually something we don’t see too much of from Victor – he’s being smug. He absolutely has a right to be, given his level of proficiency in his sport, but he’s usually quite humble about it even while being confident. But this shot, and the camera angle and shadows on his face that add to it, all create the image of “I know I’m better than/know more than you in this”. I feel that he is absolutely doing this on purpose. Victor is incredibly aware of how others see him. In this case, he’s playing into how Yurio perceives him and is using that as a way to motivate him into accepting something that would be a definite challenge for him – skating Agape. This is a perfect depicting of the saying “lead by example” in regards to being aware that others’ perception of your image might not be what is really on the inside.

This last gif is an expression I’m especially fond of because it’s one of the first times that Victor is truly stumped by Yuuri. Just to clarify: this is a really good thing! This is exactly the spark that attracted Victor to Yuuri in the first place! This is the first time since he left his life behind in Russia and flew halfway across the globe to Japan that he’s seen this in Yuuri. And his expression and exclamation in the next shot shows exactly how he feels about that.

Well, that got a bit longer than I had initially planned but consider it a way to make up for this set being a day late. I also just have too many thoughts about Victor… Look forward to more coming your way next week!

Bonus because while it’s not Victor in person, it’s too beautiful not to add:

cold isn’t the word to describe the chill caressing your bones. not even fucking close. freezing, could be decent enough but still, not really. you don’t want to walk to catch the train, you’re begging God to miraculously will a bus to course this street or your friend Tristan to have worked a late shift, but you face a truth harder and colder than the 5 AM air: he never takes the night shift.  It’s always something about the uneasiness that creeps up his spine when someone walks through the entrance past 4 AM. Is it illegal to crave a short stack at that hour?

the trek is just as creepy as it was yesterday, and the 3 years before that you’ve been working at the mom and pop diner and taking the late night shifts. the journey never changes, just the amount of death you wish upon yourself between the change of seasons. “goodnight Melina, see you Monday.” you call behind you, exiting the back door. the dark alley set before you sent a whole new line of chills up your spine. mom always warned you that the dark can be murderous.

the memory of her vice-like grip that used to run through your hand as she picked you up late from the babysitter when you were little, always tingled when you walked someplace shrouded in black. It was like she was there with you, without the embarrassing “be careful, baby!” she’d shout after you if you’d stray a little too far. she knew you’d be fine. you were just like her in every way, so she was never scared for you.

Thank you everyone for helping me reach the 300 followers milestone! As a gift, I’d like to present you with some of my tips :)

Recently, I met a group of very motivational people, and they gave me tips on how I could manage my time better. I obviously took notes and thanked them so much because it definitely helped me out a lot.

Note: These tips won’t apply to all people as it is mostly focused on junior students (I’m a junior, so it might not be as helpful for the students in uni/college??)

It is a common thing for all students to have struggles with organising their time (especially me– why am I giving tips; wtf??), so I present to you: how to sort out your time!!

What I’m going to cover:

  • Finding time to do work
  • How you can beat procrastination
  • Homework
  • Revision
  • Assignments + Exams

Be prepared, because this is an immense post. *Looks down* Yeah, it seems like I’m about to jump down a cliff made of tips.
