i have a work meeting!

I recently saw a video of a young woman talking about all of the reasons our generation, the Millennials, sucks and that’s she’s sorry for what we’ve become. Here is my, a fellow Millennial, response:

You say we’re just ‘existing’ and not ‘contributing anything to society.’ The oldest Millennial is 34, the youngest is 12, we haven’t had time to contribute anything yet. We’re trying to survive in a world that no other generation has had to grow up in, with a tanked economy and most of our childhood hearing nothing but war in the Middle East on the news while also being profoundly connected. We didn’t do that.

You say we’re no longer polite, we don’t say ‘no, sir’ or ‘no ma’am’ anymore and we no longer hold the door open for our elders or women. We also don’t expect low-paid workers to break their backs for us, or at yell at them when they make a mistake, like my 60-year-old grandfather does. We say ‘no problem’ when there’s a mistake in order, and politely stand by while the 40-something-year-old soccer mom huffs and rolls her eyes as the new girl struggles to punch in the correct code.

You say our music objectifies women and glorifies drugs and criminals. There has been no significant change from the songs that were once sung or the singers who sang them. Many of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s performers were drug addicts, womanizers, and criminals in their own right. Elvis Presley was child abuser, John Lennon raped his many girlfriends and most of the music I grew up listening, which was 80’s rock, were performed by habitual drug abusers. Let’s not pretend like human nature took a drastic turn when 1983 rolled around.

You say we cuss to prove a point. We, as a generation, have learned it’s not the words we fucking use, it’s the passion in them that we care about. As a generation, we’ve become more interested in politics and the world around us, cursing is minor problem when we consider the political climate the older generation has plunged us into.

You say we use ‘bae’ to describe the ones we love. Bae, originally, means ‘before anyone else’ which is incredibly romantic in my opinion. Bae is also hardly ever taken seriously, it’s a jokey way to talk about someone you love. Language changes, I doubt people were happy when we changed ‘wherefore’ into ‘why.’ The greatest injustice we can do to our language and culture is not allow it to evolve and grow with us.

You say we idolize people like Kim Kardashian and shame people like Tim Tebow. Kim Kardashian is a business woman who had a private video she made with a lover illegally revealed. Instead of fading into obscurity, she stood tall and did not let the sexual shaming she endured stop her and now runs a multi-million dollar industry, is married to one of the richest men in the world, and had two beautiful children. Tim Tebow is a Christian who was criticized by a few people for praying in an open stadium while most people just wanted to see a game.

You say we’re lazy and entitled, we want to make a lot of money and get a free education but we’re not willing to put in the work. We are not lazy. I cannot tell you how many people I meet who have gone to school full time while working a part or even full-time job just to make ends meet. We’re not entitled, we’re bitter. In the 70’s, you could work a part time job over the summer and pay your way through four years of school because tuition was $400, now just to walk in the door of your local community college you need to drop $14,000. We have kids who aren’t even old enough to drink, yet are already $20,000 deep in debt. Debt that won’t go away because even filing for bankruptcy won’t erase it. And even with that education, there’s no guarantee you’ll find something in your field. I have a friend who has a degree in microbiology and she’s making $9 an hour selling $15 candles. I have another friend who has a masters in Sport Psychology and Counseling. She’s a bartender. My parents bought a three bedroom house in the suburbs in the late 90’s while my generation is imagining apartments with breezy windows and trying to get enough money to get food while we scrounge up less than $8 a week.

You say we spend more time online making friends and less time building relationships and our relationship’s appearance on Facebook is more important than building the foundation that relationship is based on. We are a generation that is profoundly connected and no other generation has seen this before. We have more opportunities to meet people from all over the world and better chances to understand other worldviews and lifestyles. Being able to stay home and talk to people over the internet is cheaper and more relaxing than having to force yourself to interact with people in public settings after a long day of minimum wage labor. The people I talk to more over the internet are people I have been friends with for years. It’s easier to talk about the day’s events over Skype or Facebook Messenger than arrange a day to meet in person when you have conflicting schedules. I truly don’t believe most people care what others think of their friendship or how their relationships ‘look’ on social media. Most often what you are calling ‘our relationship’s appearance on Facebook’ are documented and searchable memories.

You say our idea of what we believe in is going on Facebook and posting a status on Facebook. Not everyone can join in with the crowds of protesters. It’s easy to see what others have to say through the comments and argue back without the threat of violence. And when this generation does organize events to stand up for ourselves, it’s met with childish name-calling or being reduced to a ‘riot.’

You say we believe the number of follows we have reflects who we are as a person. It’s nice knowing there’s 20 or 50 or maybe even 100 people who care what you have to say or think. We live in an age where we can and will be heard.

You say we don’t respect our elders, that we don’t respect our country. Our elders grew up in one of the greatest economic booms in history and in turn made it the worst economic situation since the 1930’s all while blaming kids who were only five at the time for it. We stand on our flag because it means nothing, it’s a pretty banner for an ugly lie. We’re a country that says you can make it if you just work hard enough while, in the end, that will almost never happen. We’re a country that becomes irate at the idea of 20-something college kids standing on some canvas dyed red, white, and blue but seem to shrug off the millions of homeless, disabled veterans.

You say we’re more divided than ever before. Ever before what? When black folk couldn’t drink from the same fountain as white folk? When women couldn’t vote? When white southerners fought for the idea that they could keep black people as slaves? We’re a generation that is done with injustice and when you fight for social change, you will divide people.

You say everything that was frowned up is celebrated. What does that mean? We frowned up gay marriage. We frowned upon wives being able to say no to sex with their husbands. We frowned up interracial marriage. We frowned up black folk being allowed to go to school with white folk. We frowned upon women being allowed to vote. Are those things not worth celebrating?

You say nothing has value in our generation, that we take advantage of everything. We value friendship more, we value the fists of change, we value social justice and family and the right to marry those we love. We value the right to be yourself, wholly and fully. We value the right to choose and we value the idea of fighting what you believe in, even when everyone older than you is telling you you’re what’s wrong with the country.

You say we have more opportunities to succeed than those before but we don’t ‘appreciate’ them. We are a bitter generation. You can finance a boat for 3.9% but you have to pay back college tuition plus 8.9%. We may have more opportunities but those opportunities cost money we don’t have.

You say you can see why we’re called ‘Generation,’ but we’re not Generation Y, we’re Millennials and we do feel entitled. We were promised a strong economy and inexpensive education. We had the world in our hands and we were going to make it better. And it was ripped away from us because of incompetent rulers, illegal wars, and greedy corporations and we get blamed for it. Crime has gone down, abortion and unintended pregnancy has lowered, people are living longer, people are more educated, people are less likely to die from violent crime or diseases, yet my generation is touted as the worst generation and for what? Crimes that we’re accused of that happened before we could even wipe our own ass? We were raised better, and we were raised in a society that treated, and continues to treat, us like garbage. And we are done. We are not sorry, we did nothing wrong.

“What? Is the bow that lame?”

Friend’s tell you when u got a googly eye on ur face. BFFs just wait to see how long it takes until you notice. it took an hour

can I get some good vibes, pls?

I sent in my application (about a week ago) to a job at one of the libraries in Tulsa. it’s full-time, includes benefits, and pays a salary that would let me afford a NICE apartment. not just like, nice-for-our-broken-millenial-dreams

like

this bitch has a pool, a yoga studio, a fitness room with exercise equipment, a tv lounge / mini library / open kitchen space

every apartment has a 17 x 9 balcony I could put planters in for flowers

all stainless steel appliances AND pets are allowed

I would only be 1 mile (~5 min by car) away from the library, right next to the riverside with jogging paths, and tulsa is a very liberal city in a very red state!

so yeah, this could be life-changing and a huge improvement for me and I’d really appreciate prayer, well-wishes, just any sort of positive thought you could send out for me

It seems like “stories” are definitely still a ~thing~ this season. Hunters told Dean that stories are told about him in the hunting circles. And a demon told Sam that stories would be told about her if she killed him.

Bur really… what kind of stories are told about them?

I mean, they’ve died a billion times. But do the hunters know how bad it got last year? Do they know it got so bad that Earth, Heaven, and Hell all teamed up in order to take down the Darkness? Do they know that the All-Realm Teamup failed, and then Dean Winchester succeeded?

I heard they keep demons chained up in their basement.

Well, I heard the older one is canoodling with an angel.

You sure? The way I heard, it’s the King of Hell he’s banging.

Did you know that the younger brother was possessed by Lucifer for, like, six years?

I heard they blew up an entire apartment building just to piss off one vampire. Not even to kill him - just to make ‘im angry.

And I heard that the older one turns into the Hulk until his brother gives him pie.

  123. Prove me wrong then! Prove me that I can trust you, that you won’t fuck me over the second I drop my guard!
  124. “Can you stop sleeping in my bathtub?”

corsaircourser  asked:

You're going to get a billion of these, I bet, but James Flint! You write him with such a careful hand but every shade of his character is just perfect, so I'm curious what you keep in mind when getting him down on paper!

OH BOY thank you so much! i don’t even know if i’m doing this meme right. i knew this was coming and @reluming also asked for this and now i feel unbelievable pressure hahaha. i hope i’m doing my boy right :|

James Flint:

– He had a very mild religious upbringing. They celebrated holidays just to appease the neighbors, rarely went to church, and he had only read parts of the Bible, mostly in later life. Flint is self-aware enough that, given his history and his personality, this is probably for the best. The last thing he needs is Eternal Judgement.

– As a boy, he’d been helping his grandfather load his fishing boat when a Navy vessel had stopped at the Padstow docks for an emergency resupply. An officer had approached Flint, all of 13, to ask for directions, and had walked away, likely thinking Flint a simpleton with the way he’d answered (or more specifically, hadn’t). He couldn’t help it. The man had large, bright brown eyes and a straight, important nose, and stubble coating a sharp jaw and prominent Adam’s apple. His perfect Navy hat had sat atop long blond hair, tied neatly back even after days at sea. His broad shoulders had only been emphasized by his starched blue uniform, the brass buttons shining all the way down his chest, and he’d walked down the dock with a proud sailor swagger that kept Flint watching even as he disappeared into the town. Flint’s newfound teenage lust had mixed with his understandable ignorance, and so, as he’d continued to think of the officer days later, he had found himself overcome with the fierce desire to join His Majesty’s Royal Navy.

– The first time he’d killed a man, he’d only lit a fuse on a cannon, sending one ball after another rocking into an enemy ship. All he’d felt at the time was fear for his own life. The first kill that he’d ever felt guilty over was Gates. The first kill he’d ever felt real pleasure over was Thomas’s father. Every other death and injury had been just another means to an end, that rarely, if ever, gave him pause.

– A part of him is always waiting to die. It’s a part of him that wants to. But an equally greater part of himself wants to outlive the whole damn world, to be the last one left alive in this fucking ungrateful place. He wants to live a long and miserable life just because civilization itself doesn’t deem him worthy of it. Society sees him as a creature, undeserving to breath air, to taste food, to walk upright on his own two feet. To them, he will and should be put down by his own evilness, by his own deeds, and he wants nothing more to prove to them that one can live because of these deeds. One can thrive. He knows one of these impulses will win out in the end, but he honestly has no idea which one.

– The first time he’d seen Silver – properly saw him, stood before him in daylight – the thought had flittered through his mind that his mouth would look great around his cock. The thought had flashed through his mind like lightning, so quickly he wasn’t even sure it had happened, and mostly he was about to forget about it. As long as he could drown out the roll of thunder he heard in his heart and his stomach and lower still, whenever he looked at Silver’s lips.

– He sometimes idly thinks how much better his life would be if he could love women the way he loved men. Not because he felt shame any longer in who he was, but because every woman he knew was so much better than every man. Better than himself. Granted, he knew more men than women, but on average, men were violent, hateful, stupid people, responsible for all the suffering he had ever endured. Miranda, Eleanor, Madi – all had carried themselves with unwavering strength and intelligence, had elevated themselves in some fashion by will alone, and had maintained as much rationality as possible. He envied them, and he had loved them easily. While the love he felt for Thomas, for Silver, was hard, in every sense of the word, and Flint is a hard man, for all of his immeasurable softness.

i feel like iko would like,,,, be really good at photography? like she would really enjoy doing it? idk its just a random headcanon but imagine iko with a camera. she would be really good at like taking candid shots of her friends. cinder laughing at one of her jokes. scarlet giving a soft look at wolf when she thinks no one’s looking. of course she would do photoshoots of her friends for free, professional ones with backdrops and wardrobe changes, but like. iko notices her friends, its one of her traits and its one that makes her the most human, you know? and so i feel like she would get into photography bc she would be able to express those little things she notices about her friends. the way cinder’s nose crinkles when she laughs, the way the tips of cress’ ears turn red when she’s embarrassed.

and of course she’d take hella selfies tbh

Yesterday, one of my discussions sessions was talking about the fear associated with wanting to be a math major, but not thinking of themselves as ‘math people.’

I told them I was never ‘math people,’ that I learned trig at age 23, calculus at 24, higher math at 25, and started graduate math at 26. Being ‘math people’ is a decision, and it’s never too late to decide to be just that.

…Then they asked me what I did before age 23, and I told them about my law career…

…They expressed surprise that I had walked away from a very well-paying career to go back to school, then stayed in school after finishing my program.

…And…

…I might have gotten too real. I say it all the time on here, but I said it to them:

There is nothing more important to me in this whole world than their understanding of mathematics. It is the reason I exist. It is everything to me that they will, in this lifetime, witness mathematics as I have come to know it. It is my life’s work that they meet this beautiful, indescribable thing that I love with all I am and everything I will ever be. I quit my career to dedicate all my time to it, traded my house for a one room efficiency so I could afford tuition and books, lost my marriage because my spouse didn’t support my decision to do this, and it was still a steal of a deal because what I got in return is the most valuable, important thing I could ever possibly do with my life. I’d live in a gutter and eat sticks and leaves and think myself a king as long as I could teach calculus all day and work on research all night. As long as I felt like I was doing a good job and my students were building a better understanding of mathematics, as long as I was ever refining my understanding of the inner workings of this incomparable abstract creature called mathematics, I would feel like a millionaire.

I told them also that they already are math people. We talk about math all day, and we teach each other in the process. They bring new problems that I had never considered before, challenge me to think in different ways, and (for crissake) help me improve my shitty arithmetic abilities by keeping me in consistent practice. They make me a better mathematician, and it my greatest privilege and joy to think that I help make them better mathematicians, too.

…Anyway, there were some interesting expressions on faces in that room, so they might think I’m a lil’ cray. But I don’t regret that, because I like to think it was obvious already (both that I am cray, and that I care a LOT about their learning calculus). My students deserve educators who feel that their learning of the subject matter is the most important thing in the entire universe, because it is.

Birthday Cake

Summary: Being Childhood friends with an idol is one thing, not being an idol yourself another. Will your ordinary birthday gift be up to par with the fancy gifts his friends have given him?

The lobby of your building is oddly quiet upon your arrival. Having just endured an arduous day at work you couldn’t be happier with the absence of yelling and crying that usually greeted you. Treading your way into your apartment, you are about ready to collapse on your couch when a box on the counter catches your attention. It had completely slipped your mind that today was Junmyeon’s birthday.  Looking at it now, you remembered how you took the box out of your cupboard that morning fully intended to start making it. However, after a call from your boss informing you that the upcoming meeting had been advanced you scampered around your apartment to get ready on time and forgot all about it.

“Y/N” you heard Jungkook sing song. He had been bothering you for the past three weeks. Jungkook was your boss’s son and he had been trying to get you to go out with him since day one.

You had given the papers to your secretary and turned to face him. “Jungkook,” you sighed and walked back over to your office. You walked inside your office and turned to close your door but Jungkook stopped it and walked in. You sighed again and went to sit at your desk. You got on your computer, not looking at him, “Yes, Jungkook.”

“Oh, Y/N” he laughed. “I love when you call me that.”

You looked over at him, “It is your name.”

He just stood there and smiled with a wink. You rolled your eyes, “What did you need?”

He walked over and sat at the on the edge of your desk. “Well, I need a date to dinner tonight?”

I had the opportunity to meet Sarah J. Maas at her Baltimore event on Thursday, and it was absolutely amazing.

I predicted I would do one of two things upon meeting her: cry or go into shocked silence… . I went into shocked silence. Seriously, I’m glad pictures were taken because I can barely remember what I said, and I’m pretty sure most of my responses consisted of no more than one or two words.

These books mean the world to me, and I cannot begin to express what it felt like to show Sarah my illustrations. I made up a little packet of prints for her and was thrilled to learn she had seen some of my work before! She was incredibly sweet and told me how much it meant to her that I and other fans take the time to do artwork based on her books. She said my Suriel illustration was perfect and I even got a “Wow” from Josh as I quickly shuffled though the images.

I also wanted to thank the group of fans that hunted me down and spirited me away with them. It was great meeting you and I really appreciate the support of my work. I hope I’ll have the opportunity to meet you again. <3 <3 <3

This event was SO worth the road trip in the horrible rain, and I will definitely try to make it to her future events.
