i have 2 left after this

TPoH Volume 1 Books!

Just so you know that I’ve run out of envelopes to send out Volume 1 right now, so I’ve ordered more- but I am on the last box of the books! After this last batch there will be no more, but then I’ll be running a kickstarter for Volume 2! If that goes really well, I will very likely run another for The Princess and the Jester, and then maybe another run of Volume 1 and or 2 of TPoH depending on how demand is looking. I’ll let you guys know when the envelopes arrive so if you’re desperate to get your mitts on those books you’ll have to jump, because I think there’s only like, forty or so left? That means I’ve sold something like 1000 books overall?!? Thank you?! You’re amazing. Amazing.

SasuSaku vs Studio Pierrot - BORUTO Ep. 17

Can one SS-related episode go by without me having to whitness the most ridiculous drama going down in the fandom? Everyone on Twitter being hyped af and all you guys saying “FUCK SP!! THEY DESTROY OUR SHIP!! HURR DURR!!”

First of all, calm the fuck down.

Second: Episode explained (from my own understanding)

  • Sakura leaving Sarada alone at home: Sakura is a working and (at the moment) single parent, having to provide for her child and being the CEO of a children’s hospital. By her goddman self. Being a CEO takes up a lot fo your time and energy and Sakura also helps out at Konoha’s main hospital (as seen in a previous Ghost-Arc episode where she healed one of the victims). It’s to be expected since she’s the most skilled medical ninja that currently exists. Therefore, Sarada has to spend a good amount of time by herself, but Sakura made sure that her child can provide for herself. In other words, Sarada is fine. Don’t you dare say Sakura is a bad mother, she’s done everything in her power to take care of that child and (unlike SOME OTHER MOTHERS WHO ALWAYS STAY AT HOME WHILE THEIR HUSBANDS ARE BUSY BEING HOKAGE) she also taught Sarada manners, manners that Boruto (for example) doesn’t fucking have.
  • 2 & ½ minute date: Now this one is getting mixed reactions from both shippers and from the antis. To me this has a very logical explanation. It probably went down like this:
Sasuke and Sakura were chilling on that bench and Sasuke probably brought up that this is “like a date” but shortly after he got a message from the Hokage, which interrupted them and he had to leave. Or maybe they both left and went on a mission together since I suspect this must have happened during the time they were traveling together, which was (obviously) the time they bonded romantically.
  • “Sasuke probably doesn’t remember it”: that’s Sakura being humble, which is nothing new. She’s shown being humble in regards to Sasuke before. That doesn’t mean that she doubts his love for her, that’s just standard insecurity issues. Sakura is probs the most realistic female character in the matter of expressing emotions.
  • Sasuke (allegedly) never contacting Sakura: Now this this bullshit and you know it. Idk if SP did that on purpose or by accident, but fact is that the 2 of them most definitely HAVE been in contact, maybe not directly but through a 3rd party. It shocks me to see so many ppl doubting Sasuke and making him out to be an asshole after hearing what he said in episode 15. To remind y’all:
“Naruto, give Sakura a message from me. Tell her I’m sorry for everything.”
which means he most definitely contacted her and quite recetly too. The reason Sakura denies it to Ino is simple:
Sasuke is on a secret mission and in order to make sure that nothing accidentally slips, she prefers to deny it all together. This is also the reason why she hasn’t talked to Sarada about her dad. Sakura could’ve told Sarada tons of stories involving her father, especially from their genin days. But she couldn’t. Get that in your heads. Plot!!

oh and one more thing

  • “Sarada asking Sakura to bring a ’dad’ back home was rude!”: No, it wasn’t. Wtf? It was sassy, yes, but rude? No. It’s quite understandable if you ask me. Sarada is curious and misses her dad. She knows she has one and she knows he’s alive. She also knows that her parents are still married (aka there was no divorce that would justify his absence), so naturally she demands to see him despite knowing that it’s no good atm because of his mission. She knows that. But she has the right to express her frustration, especially since she appears to be a very gentle child that doesn’t cause much trouble and always listens to her mom. She can afford being rebellious once in a while.

Have a good fucking week.

honestly after save the light is released I hope we get a game about Lars during his time on homeworld ,it can have lars and the off colors as the playable characters and it can take place between Lar's head and Lars of the ,it can start where lar's head left off and it could show us 1)how lars changed so much 2)how he got his new outfit 3)how he stole Emeralds ship 4)how he met Emerald for the first time 5)Emerald's reaction when he stole her ship

could be a neat game! but we don’t know yet whether we get a flashback of it in the show or not.

Yo can I get 1-8 for boyf riends

1. Which one gets sick fairly often? Which one almost never gets sick?

Jeremy is the king if having No immune system whatsoever, especially after the squip attack. Michael gets winter sickness only and it hits him HARD

2. Which one wants to be taken care of when they’re sick? Which one wants to be left alone?

They both secretly do, but Michael REALLY wants to be taken care of. His anxiety tells him he’s being annoying and plus he doesn’t wanna get Jeremy sick. Jeremy feels to gross to be seen so he tends to hide away, but if it’s michael…

3. Which one hovers over the other when they’re sick?

They both hover but Michael’s like a hen. He knows Jeremy’s sick from a mile away.

4. Which one makes amazing homemade soup to help the other feel better? Which one ruins canned noodle soup?

Michael makes MIRACLE soup man, he’s amazing and Jeremy would die for his soup. Jeremy on the other hand leaves the canned soup in the microwave for too long and it’s a little dry, but mike still eats it.

5. Which one stubbornly tries to pretend that they aren’t sick?

Michael doesn’t exactly TRY to hide it, he just stays quiet until someone points it out. Jeremy however have type 5 extreme indenial even though he sucks at hiding it and general lying.

6. Whuch one refuses to kiss the other while sick? Which one insists on kissing them anyway?

Michael WANTS to kiss but he can’t because Jeremy’s gonna get sick. Jeremy is like “no my lips are chapped and gross and I’ll sneeze on you”

7. Which one hates going to see the doctor? Which one drags them there when absolutely necessary?

Both would rather die than go to the doctor, but you best BELIEVE they’ll drag the ither to the doctor.

8. Which one insists that the other isn’t contagious, then proceeds to catch what they have? Which one tries not to say “I told you so”? (Or doesnt!)

JEREMY Jesus Christ. Michael loves him too much to deny affection after enough asking but Jeremy always gets sick and muchael always says I told you so instantly.

What is your opinion on the fact phil wasn't in the 'apartment' much in may and june. A lot of people believed that they had a huge argument but idk. What do you think?

it is interesting

he went away for a few days twice within 2 weeks, which was really weird

I dont think they had an argument, or else the gaming videos would have been a lot more tense.

I think what happened was this:

phil had to go somewhere again, right after celebrating dan’s birthday. dan probably could have gone as well, but instead he chose to stay home and work on videos. shortly after phil left, dan probably realized that he definitely should have gone, and was really missing phil. I can imagine that would be why he snapped at the fan on the younow; he probably hated people bringing up the fact that he was not with phil.

I also think that phil did actually go to visit family, because shortly after he most likely left, cornelia also tweeted about going to the airport.

dan was an emotional mess without phil for those few days. they’re already super clingy to begin with, but it was just dan’s birthday and then his boyfriend had to leave.

(keep in mind that the first time he left, they were both completely fine. and when phil came back that weekend, they had a super cute bbq with dan’s grandparents)

It’s finally finished! I wanted to make this comic for the snap election, but if the Tories win I feel like it’s gonna be relevant for the next few years.

I messaged a few of the spoonie blogs I follow to see if they would be okay with me tagging them in this. I got responses from @spooniediaries and @heyatleastitsnotcancer but I didn’t want to tag anyone else who hadn’t given me their consent.

Caption/script under the cut - please reblog and share. (Note: the captioning is reaaaaally long - it might crash your phone if you’re on mobile).

GUYS I'M SCREAMING

So I’ve been reading Ron Chernow’s book on Hamilton, and I’ve found some facts that I would love to be made into fanfics.

1. Washington called Hamilton ‘my boy,’ and the other aides called him 'Ham’ or 'Hammie.’

2. Alexander made many rides across the Hudson River, riding 60 miles a day, for five days, riding like a man possessed. He eventually had to stay in a town he was delivering a letter to, telling Washington in a letter the reason he was so late; “I have been struck with a slight fever, and severe rhumuthic (however you spell that) pains.” After he recovered, he was struck ill by a severe chill, and doctors thought he wouldn’t make the night. He did, and left, collapsing outside of Morristown. (Ham needs to take care of himself smh)

3. Washington brought out his anger on Hamilton.

4. Alexander’s relationship With John is called the most intimate relationship he had in his entire life.

5. Lafayette referred to himself as Alexander’s brother, but he may have had a small crush on Alex.

6. Hercules Mulligan was Alex’s first friend fuck off Burr

7. Alexander’s horse was shot out from under him in the Battle of Monnmuth (however you spell that), was badly injured, and had to retreat.

How about an AU spinning off of the end of Season 2 where after weeks of searching, the team reluctantly concludes that Shiro must be dead. But rather than stick together, Keith refuses to accept anyone other than Shiro as the Black Paladin (including himself) so when the team tries to sort out who will replace Shiro, Keith decides to leave. He somehow figures out how to make himself look Galra and he sets out to infiltrate the Empire, figuring he’ll just have to take down Zarkon on his own.

Meanwhile Pidge decides if there’s no more Voltron because they’re down two paladins now, she has no more reason to stay. She also leaves, intending to search the universe for her brother and father, though she at least says goodbye before she takes off, unlike Keith. The team is down to Hunk and Lance, Coran and Allura.

Lance seriously considers just trying to go home, just giving up on Voltron like everyone else seems to have, but as he’s loading up Blue, getting ready to head back to Earth, he looks back and sees Coran and Allura watching him go, looking completely defeated. And suddenly he just can’t leave. He misses his family, sure, but Allura and Coran have lost so much already, he can’t bear to make that worse. Besides, he knows that if the Galra aren’t stopped, his home and his family will eventually be in danger, and he can’t live with himself knowing he’d be at least partially responsible for that. He stays.

Hunk was just going to stick with Lance, because they’re best friends, no matter what Lance decided, but he’s painfully relieved when Lance changes his mind and decides to stay. Allura and Coran are pretty much crying.

So the four of them become this tiny little resistance all on their own, sometimes working with the BoM group, sometimes on their own. They can’t form Voltron, but they’ve got two lions and a lot of gumption, and they’re going to do whatever the heck they can to stop Zarkon and the Empire.

Then one day, maybe years later, while Lance and Hunk are sneaking into a Galra facility on a mission to get supplies, info, and to cause some damage, they stumble upon a Galra soldier trying to release a very familiar-looking man who is floating in some sort of healing pod. Hunk almost attacks the Galra but Lance stops him, saying “I’d know that mullet anywhere.” A very surprised, very purple Keith looks up at them with wide eyes.

(Oh, and Pidge and her fam are totally there too. Keith and Lance get into a shouting match that draws their attention and leads the Holts right to the rest of the team. Pidge and Matt end up being the ones to figure out how to release Shiro from the healing pod, though they have to use Keith’s hand to actually activate the system. Then there’s a brief argument over how the group is getting out of the Galra facility and who’s taking Shiro where, which Lance and Hunk win by virtue of the Castle of Lions being the biggest ship, and the only one with healing pods.

Pidge’s dad marvels over how unlikely it was that they all managed to be reunited at the same time like that, but all of the Voltron Lions look very smug somehow for the next few days despite the fact that their faces are solid metal and can’t show expression)

Reasons I disliked Hannah Baker

1. Obvious one, but leaving tapes back after your death is extremely fucked up and damaging to the people left behind. Maybe the top 5 characters did deserve to have tape made on them, but the rest… nope. It’s a sadistic move and something that fucks up characters like Alex and Zack , for life.

2. She didn’t leave a single letter for her parents. She spend hours recording tapes on people who ruined her life, but not a single page or not even a ’ I love you’ to her parents - who loved her extremely and didn’t deserve to suffer like they did.

3. She put such a burden on Tony. It’s unexplainable. He felt so troubled and conflicted on whether he was doing the right thing by hiding the tapes from Hannah’s parents. He didn’t deserve that one bit.

4. On the day of Jessica’s party, she pushed Clay away, because she didn’t deserve him and being with her would ruin him. Okay. But didn’t she think, that listen to theses tapes would ruin him either way? I mean she wanted to protect his innocence so much, she shouldn’t have added him on the list.

Yeah, he could have said something that night and calmed her down, but we all need to understand - clay was nervous he had done something wrong, staying back would have messed it up more. If this was another show, where the guy persisted on staying in the room when the girls repeatedly asked him to leave- we would hate that guy.

She couldn’t possibly mess him up like that. He is going to blame himself for the rest of his life, he didn’t deserve that.

I guess, that’s pretty much it. And FYI, I don’t mean that she deserved to die or anything fucked up like that. She didn’t deserve the pain she suffered or anything after that.

Additional note : to people who didn’t agree with me so they simply said ‘You clearly never have been mentally unstable’, I would like to answer you with a quote, ironically, by Jay Asher - “You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own.” If you don’t agree with me, I completely respect that, in fact you can explain me why I misunderstood her … but don’t talk about shit you have no clue about :)
some tips from your local depressed college student
  • cheap paper towels + hydrogen peroxide = acne treatment (just be careful not to bleach your eyebrows unless you’re into that idk)
  • use the acne face soap on your chest, upper back, and shoulders instead, since it doesn’t do shit for your face (or at least not mine)
  • no one is stopping you from bushing your teeth in the shower except yourself (just eliminating that extra step of going to the sink makes it so much easier for me)
  • did you know you’re actually supposed to put on stick deodorant at night??? It has time to absorb while u sleep or stare at the ceiling in dispair whichever works best for u
  • carrots and/or apples dipped in peanut butter = dinner (or just plain peanut butter but it helps to get a lil something extra if you can manage it)
  • if you give yourself an allowance of skip days (i’m talking like 3 or 4 max) then it can be easier to go to class if you remind yourself “i only have 2 skip days left, I’m gonna save them until I REALLY need them” (think of skip days like non-essential items in a video game - you could use them now, but what if you really need them during the final boss battle later on??)
  • the velveeta microwave dinners aren’t great but they’re cheap and better than some other options out there. the mac n cheese w/ meat ones can smell a bit like dog food but they still taste pretty good
  • if you like peppermint hot chocolate - save the after dinner mints you get at places like Chik Fil A and italian restaurants and such and then drop a couple in your mug before you put it in the microwave. boom.
  • if you’ve got a sore throat, just take a spoonful of honey (or squirt it directly from the bottle to your mouth if you’re a heathen like me) and go find a hot drink
  • for essays - highlight/number/circle/whatever you want to do to make ‘em stand out the quotes you want to use in your paper, then go take a shower or get something to eat or just watch like a 15-20 minute video on YouTube and then come back to your paper, pop those fuckin’ quotes in the right order, and write in the smart bullshit around them
  • okay actually the one thing that I will spend a little extra money on is cough drops bc i get a sore throat all the damn time and the only kind i will buy anymore is Halls Breezers they taste like candy instead of koala shit my personal favorite is cool berry but the orange creme ones are good too honestly these cough drops have saved my life at least six times now
  • coffee is gr9 but don’t forget to have some water every day too dehydration is NOT FUN (speaking from very painful personal experience)
Call me a terrorist and threaten my pay? Enjoy your nuked careers, yuh heathens.

(long story. tl;dr is at the end)

I used to work in hospitality in a metro known for it’s obscenely huge tourist population, you know, the city built around the Mouse. I was a manager for the recreational division of the hotel. So one day, my boss (who we’ll call Mary for the purpose of the story) comes into the shared managers office and starts rummaging around for something, and strikes up a small conversation about work related minutiae with me. It’s important to note she is actually 2 tiers above me, but was acting as head of the department while searching to replace my previous boss who recently quit (great guy by the way, huge loss to the company).

As we’re talking, she abruptly stops and says “By the way, you need to shave your beard, you look like a terrorist and I don’t employ terrorists”. Haha, funny joke between colleagues, right? Nope. I am half Indian and I do look middle-eastern, and have been taking this kind of shit since middle school. Plus, we’re not close, at all. So I reply as calmly as I can muster, “Hey, I get you’re trying to be funny, but on my end it comes off as pretty ignorant, so I’d appreciate it if you chilled out with the terrorist stuff” to which Mary retorts “Oh, I’m ignorant? We’ll see how ignorant I am during your annual review”, and proceeds to walk out of the room in a huff. My jaw dropped so low I could taste the floor.

I have been the bad guy before,
I kissed a boy so broken
I could taste his heart inbetween his teeth
And took that as an invitation to spit forever down his throat
I held her hand so tight
Our bones shattered
And blamed her for letting go
I traced the scars on his wrist
Just so i could linger there long after i left
I wrote poems about her eyes
And told her i loved her as much as i believed in god
I never believed in god
I let him touch my body and promised it would always be his
And smiled into his bestfriend’s bed
I could never belong to anybody, he should have known that
I told her i’d always be there
But when the phone rang at 2 AM
I turned it off and let her talk to the answering machine instead,
I never meant it
I have scattered my ashes
Around people who claim they love me
Just to prove to them they can’t love someone like me
Just to prove to myself i can’t love anything right

Mack Beggs, 17-year-old trans wrestler, opens up about discrimination and winning the girls’ state title

Not everyone is a fan of Mack Beggs. Because of a backward Texas policy, the transgender teen boy has been forced to wrestle on the girls’ team. And that doesn’t sit well with everyone.

Throughout his undefeated season wrestling for Euless Trinity High School, Beggs’ presence at tournaments was met with boos and jeers. One parent, who alleged Beggs’ hormone therapy treatment gave him an unfair edge over his female competitors, brought a lawsuit against the athletic body in charge.

After all of this fuss and furor, it’s easy to imagine that when the high school junior stepped up to the mat for the girls’ state championships on Saturday he’d have been nervous. Maybe he felt that all eyes were on him for all of the wrong reasons. Maybe he thought that people were waiting for him to fail, or for him to injure one of his female opponents.

But Beggs didn’t hold back. He left it all on the mat, and he won, 12-2. And as he inched closer to the title, something incredible happened.

“I was getting both cheering and booing, but the booing died out after a while because there was more cheering,” Beggs said Tuesday. “That was the moment I knew I had more people supporting me than ever.” Read more (3/1/17 3 PM)

Traffic lights are killing kink fic

Dramatic title, but this rant has been building for some time and I need to get it off my chest. Friends, fellows, lovely fic writers: kink fic in fandom lately sounds like someone is reciting a How To BDSM 101 manual and it’s really starting to grind my gears.

It seems lately that, more often than not, any fic I open with even the teeniest bit of kink spends about half the fic being excruciatingly boring and samey about making sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to consent and who is spanking who in bed. As an Actual Real Live Kinky Person, let me tell you about some things that are seriously pissing me off.

…but they bump heads like anyone. Don’t you ever bump heads with your friends? But they always come back to, you know, a place of mutual respect of each other.
—

Katie McGrath

And with this single sentence, the rare lesser striped cryptid McGrath has awoke from hibernation to pinpoint the largest difference between Kara and Lena’s dynamic and Kara and Mon-El’s. Yeah, they may fight or have differing opinions sometimes, but Lena and Kara’s mutual respect allows them to see things from the other perspective and resolve their issues together.
Kara and Mon-nom however, don’t have the mutual respect because Mon-ew doesn’t respect her. He invalidates her career, degrades her in public and even trespasses into Kara’s own home because he lacks the capacity to respect Kara, or any woman for that matter. It’s why he left that girl he’d slept with on Daxam to die, how he could manipulate Eve without giving it a second thought, why he announced their relationship status at the DEO after Kara asked him not to, and why he moved on .2 seconds after Kara said she wasn’t interested. After all, “things were easier on Daxam where I objectified women and didn’t care about anyone.”

How to let go of your ex once and for all (even if it feels impossible)

It took me nearly 3 years to get over my ex boyfriend. If you have ever been through a breakup, you know it is one of the hardest most heart-wrenching things to go through.

After weeks of fighting, the day came where there was no other option than to break up. When he left my house that day I felt like he had ripped off a piece of my soul. I had loved this man with all my heart, it was a raw all consuming intense kind of love. I couldn’t grasp the reality of what had happened. My best friend came over and I was just lying there with lykke li’s song possibility on repeat. I had cried for hours and there was no life left in my eyes.

For the first few months after the breakup I was in denial and I went into party mode, but not dealing with the pain slowly started to take its toll. And eventually (also because of some other factors) I fell into a deep black depression that would last for about a year. After the depression it still took me a long time to completely let him go.

It was the hardest and most valuable experience of my life.

So what helped me to let him go?

Yuri on Ice interview translation - Animage 2017/01 (p20-23)

I was going to post this last week but gave priority to the BD stuff. This will be the final interview from the booklet that came with January Animage! There’s still an interview with Kenji Miyamoto left untranslated, but it will be taken care of by @whiteboxgems whenever she has time! I’ll reblog it when it’s around.

This is actually 2 interviews, I’m posting them together because they were one after the other and (main reason) because the second one is very short.
A few notes below to better understand the interviews.

The first one is with Yuuichirou Hayashi, the one who created the ending (ED = ending by the way) footage. I have the feeling someone previously posted translations of the captions under the ED screenshots, but I don’t remember where and I’m pretty sure it was just the captions and not the interview parts, so here you have it complete. This one is pretty interesting because he explains in detail how they created the ED, and has some extra information on cut scenes etc. Definitely a must read in my opinion!

The second one is a short interview with Kayoko Ishikawa, the one who did the costume designs. Here you might think: didn’t Chacott design the costumes? I’ll explain. It’s more or less like with Mitsurou Kubo and Tadashi Hiramatsu: Kubo created the original designs for the characters, from scratch, and Hiramatsu transformed them into designs specifically created for animation, therefore with simpler lines, detailed expression sheets and so on. Likewise, Chacott did the original designs for the costumes, from scratch, based on the indications by Yamamoto and Kubo, and then the anime’s costume designer simplified and modified them so that they would be suitable to be animated. (Before actually animating them there’s a further step: the anime’s color designer is going to decide the exact colors, shadows and highlights included, that will be used inside the anime. I translated an interview with the color designer Izumi Hirose some time ago)

I usually don’t add pictures but this time I felt that it would be better to add them as an immediate reference. However, they are just for reference and are not meant to be visually stunning, so please bear with the quality because I just took photos of the magazine with my phone and quickly edited them.

Translation under the cut! (kind of image-heavy)

Top Ten Tips for Freshmen

First seen on my Patreon!

Anonymous asked: Hey. I’ve been following your blog for awhile. Super cool and informative! I’m going to be a freshman in college this fall and I’m kinda nervous (like anyone would be) I’m gonna major in Music Ed. Any tips for incoming freshmen???

Congratulations on getting in! Honestly, that’s a great question. Here are my Top Ten Tips for Music Freshmen

1. Schedule in time to practice. Practice is no longer something you can do for twenty minutes when you get home from school. Pianists and violinists probably understand this already, but seriously everyone (singers especially): practice an hour a day, minimum, every weekday of your freshman year. It will help you out in the long run SO MUCH.

I’m a huge advocate for using Google Calendar for EVERYTHING, so just slide that hour of practice in between classes, or wherever it fits. Then stick to it. The difference between someone who buckles down their freshman year and someone who doesn’t tends to compound for the rest of their musical careers.

2. Schedule in time to eat. Okay, this might have been a Me-problem, but I had class straight from 8am to 4pm three days a week my sophomore year, and 8am to 8pm at least one other day that same semester. There was no lunch break in that schedule. My roommate thought I had died a couple times because I had gotten back to the dorm after she’d fallen asleep, and left before she’d woken up. DO NOT BE ME. Leave at LEAST one hour-long break somewhere in the middle of your long days. You’ll still have days that are just as long, but that break will make life so. Much. Nicer.

3. Leave your door open at your dorm, and keep it closed at your practice room. The friends I made my freshman year that I still talk to I met because we lived on the same dorm floor for like three years together. My SO, my best friends, yep, all of them lived on the same floor as me. I met them because I left my door open whenever possible, and so did they, and no one minded if someone came and sat on someone else’s floor. That’s a major method of bonding freshman year - don’t ignore it.

On the flip side, this does NOT HOLD TRUE to practice rooms. If you’re practicing, keep that door shut. If you want to talk to someone in the hallway, sure, stand in the doorway, but Do Not Do the Doot without shutting the door. That’s how you annoy the entire music program.

4. Walk everywhere, as much as you can. My freshman 15 was a negative 15, because I didn’t change how I ate but suddenly I was walking six miles a day. Yes, public transport is great if you live in a really far-flung dorm or something. But if you can buckle down and walk to class, or bike if it’s real far, then you can cut down on any guilt from not being able to hit the gym by at least half.

5. Just because there’s unlimited ice cream does NOT mean you should eat unlimited ice cream. On a similar note: yes, the soft-serve is great. Do NOT fill a salad bowl with soft-serve. Just don’t. It ends badly. Coffee poured into a mug half-filled with soft-serve? A much better idea, in moderation.

6. The friends you make in your first week will probably not be the friends you have at graduation. I still talk to my freshman group, but that’s because we were all remarkably level-headed people who didn’t really do the massive personality change some students go through their freshman year. I’ve seen way more groups, however, that cling together the first two weeks of school, and then try to force friendship for the rest of the year, regardless of actual compatibility. Just let it go, and be friends with the people you actually get along with. Join clubs and intramurals, if you need to.

P.S. Dating your freshman year is not worth it!!! Don’t do it!!!

7. Even if you don’t like your fellow music majors, be polite and courteous to them anyway. There’s always one or two people in your music program that you will not be able to stand. That’s fine. Do your best to avoid being in classes or ensembles with them. What you cannot do is: be cruel, talk behind their back, or otherwise be a rude and gross person to them. A.) That’s just mean, and you’re not a high school student anymore, rise above the pettiness. B.) The people you meet in college will be an amazing network for the rest of your life. Even if you don’t think that the person you dislike is a potential connection that will help you later, the people who hear you gossip or be cruel could be, and they will remember it. Always be kind.

8. Stick to the middle of the bell curve when it comes to talking in class. Don’t be the person talking almost as much as the professor, either to answer questions, interrupt, or whisper to your friends. And please don’t be That Guy, the one who thinks they know EVERYTHING and purposefully asks obscure questions to seem smart. On the other hand, you should try to answer some questions. Feel out the atmosphere of your program, and adjust your talking based on that.

9. MUSIC MAJORS CAN’T SKIP CLASS. Too many college advice things tell incoming freshmen that yeah, you can totally skip class every week or so, it won’t affect your grade, blah de yada blah. I don’t know if this applies to other majors (probably not any rigorous ones), but it certainly does NOT apply to music majors. You go to every class you can drag yourself to. If you have a major flu or something, email your professor and get the material. However, unless you are nigh unto Living Death, go to class. I learn really well on my own, and any time I missed a class I came back and immediately felt lost. DON’T SKIP CLASS.

10. It’s okay to switch majors - both within music and to something else. Music is a hard major to enter, but once you’re in it, it’s easy to shift your focus or leave. Tons of people enter as Performance majors, and leave as Ed., or vice versa, or switch Composition or Tech instead. Plenty of others drop music down to a minor and get business majors or something else completely different. All of that is okay.

The current requirement that kids who have been told to sit down, shut up, and listen for 12 years being expected to know exactly what their career path should be upon being handed a piece of paper at 18 is DUMB. So follow your passion. If your passion changes, that’s okay - just keep going. You’ve got this.
