i hate bullys

I’m in no way excusing the ass that Snape was, but his actual backstory was not being rejected by Lily (who was right!!!!!) but being abused by his father and bullied! This does not excuse his behaviour in any way, but stop saying that the only thing that made him such a dick was being rejected… the reason he joined the Death Eaters was rooted in his shitty childhood (and here the parallel with Harry really emerges, as he was also abused and bullied but became an amazing person, while Snape chose the wrong path and became a total asshole). His obsession with Lily was sure creepy and in no way actual love, but that’s not the only thing that shaped him

The 7 Elements of a SCENE

There are few things as soul-crushing in the writing process (at least to me) than getting a bunch of characters in a room with the intention of something happening, then the characters proceed to stand around and stare at each other.

Or worse, look at you like this.

My characters didn’t know why they were there. I didn’t know why they were there either. I had no clue what they were supposed to be doing, so I’d start throwing random instructions at them: “Fight, characters! You guys should fight now! Maybe fighting will make this event have a purpose!” Which inevitably resulted in characters going through the motions of battle for no apparent reason, like they had all lost their minds.

What was the problem? I didn’t know how to write a scene. I didn’t know what a scene was. I had a vague definition that it was something about changing scenery, or just “something happening”.

It’s not. And once I learned what a scene was, my characters got to stop pummeling each other, while wishing they could pummel me.

So what is a scene?

The definition of a scene is kind of like the definition of a story. Story is change, a massive change in the life of your main character. A scene is change too, but much smaller, and part of that huge story change. You couldn’t have the BIG change without these tiny changes. Thus, a scene is not switching scenery. It’s not flipping to a new Character’s POV. It’s one segment of change, which triggers the next change, which triggers the next, which gradually build into sequences, which build into Acts, which build into story.

So what goes into a scene? How does it work?

1. Alternating Charges

If a scene opens positive, it will turn negative by the end. If it opens negative, it will end positive. Simple.

2. Character Goals

Everybody in a scene wants something. If they don’t want anything, they shouldn’t be in the scene. And these characters, with their often opposing goals, are going to employ different tactics on each other to get what they want. Which creates …

3. Escalating Conflict

Conflict is created when one character wants one thing and another wants something else, right? So the characters in the scene are each pushing for something different, each new tactic increasing in determination. And what are these actions called?

4. Beats

The beats of a scene are exchanges of action and reaction. One character does something, another character reacts. All exchanges (beats) are pushing the scene onward, building tension and conflict, until finally …

5. Turns & Revelations

The scene turns. The positive has changed to negative. Something has been discovered. The story has spun in a new direction.

6. Connection to Story Objective

Every scene must be connected to the BIG goal of the story, the main character is taking small actions to reach that big goal. If it isn’t obviously connected to this big plot, it won’t make sense. Your reader won’t know why the heck they’re reading the scene. Which brings us to …

7. Logic & Necessity

Every scene must be necessary. It must be able to be linked with the previous scene. “Because that happened in the previous scene, THIS must happen in this scene.”

So! To see how that all works, let’s break down a scene from Tangled. (Because I used it in the last post to map out how a premise works, and my little writer heart can’t resist symmetry.)

Which scene? The one right after this happens:

Opening Charge: Positive. She’s realized everything.

Rapunzel’s Goal: Rise up against her mother – finally.

Gothel’s Goal: Regain control.

Escalating Conflict: They’re fighting over who controls Rapunzel, and this battle causes them to go from “mother and daughter” to “enemies”. The conflict builds nicely in this scene, causing the story turn.

Connection to Story Objective: Throughout the movie, the big thing Rapunzel wants is freedom, she wants her life to begin, she wants to have a new dream. This is the moment she figures out how to do that; it’s not escaping the tower, it’s escaping Gothel’s control over her.

So! Here’s the scene.

Beat 1

“Rapunzel? Rapunzel, what’s going on up there?”

Ignores her. Still processing the tremendous implications of this revelation.

Beat 2

“Are you alright?"

"I’m the lost princess.” (Dumbfounded. Almost whispering it to herself.)

Beat 3

“Oh, please speak up Rapunzel! You know how I hate the mumbling.” (Bullying.)

“I am the lost princess! Aren’t I?” (Fighting back. She will not be bullied anymore.)

Beat 4

Gothel stares, stunned. She’s rendered temporarily speechless, because her secret’s been revealed finally, and her victim is actually fighting against her.

“Did I mumble, Mother? Or should I even call you that?” (Accusing. Drawing herself up taller. Looking down on Gothel and glaring. She’s seeing her clearly for the first time in her life.)

Beat 5

After a pause, thinking up a tactic. “Oh, Rapunzel, do you even hear yourself? How could you ask such a ridiculous question?” (Laughs. Ridicules. Attempts to make her feel childish, dumb, worthy of being mocked. Tactics which have always worked. She even begins to hug her.)

Rapunzel pushes her. “It was you! It was all you!” (Still accusing and angry, but pain is beginning to show. It’s almost like she’s giving her a chance to explain herself.)

Beat 6

“Everything I did was to protect you.” (And Gothel doesn’t say anything redeeming. She’s holier than thou, regal, bestowing kindness on an ungrateful, stupid child. Trying to control through guilt.)

Rapunzel rams her out of the way.

Beat 7

“Rapunzel!” (Shouting. Now trying anger.)

“I’ve spent my entire life hiding from people who would use me for my power …” (Leaves her.)

Beat 8

"Rapunzel!” (Still trying the anger angle.)

“But I should have been hiding from you.” (Throwing the truth at her.)

Beat 9

“Where will you go? He won’t be there for you.” (She’s tried everything else. It’s time to attack her heart.)

“What did you do to him?” (Fear)

Beat 10

“That criminal is to be hanged for his crimes.” (She’s keeping up the disapproving mother act, but striking her right where it will hurt her most.)

“No.” (She’s stopped. Shrinking in on herself. Staring, horrified. And Gothel thinks she’s won.)

Beat 11

“Now, now.  It’s alright. Listen to me. All of this is as it should be.” She goes to pat Rapunzel’s head, a gesture symbolic of her superiority, her physical, mental, and emotional control over her victim.

Rapunzel grabs Gothel’s wrist. “No! You were wrong about the world. And you were wrong about me! And I will never let you use my hair again!"

Beat 12

Gothel wrenches free, stumbling backwards in shock and anger, breaking the mirror in the process.

Rapunzel walks away. She’s escaped Gothel emotionally now.

Beat 13

"You want me to be the bad guy? Fine. Now I’m the bad guy.” (Well, now emotional control is over. It’s time to start stabbing Rapunzel’s boyfriend.)

This action has no reaction, interestingly. It leaves us hanging, a cliffhanger created with only beats.

Closing Charge: Negative. She’s now a full-fledged villain, the motherly persona shed, and she’s determined to get what she wants whatever the cost.

Turn: It changed from positive to negative,  and now we’ve got a Flynn-stabbing witch to deal with.

Revelation: She’s always been evil. She has always been the bad guy. The motherly act was just that, an act.

Logic & Necessity: This scene fits with the previous scene, and the one that follows.

Though I’ve seen these concepts in many books, the place I first learned about it (and the best resource for scene design in my opinion) is the book Story by Robert McKee. It’s helped me countless times, is one of my favorite books on storytelling, and I highly recommend it if you write anything.

I realize that these definitions were a little vague, so I’ll be explaining things more thoroughly in subsequent posts.

Ive had this draft open for a few weeks now, trying to find the right words for what I want to say, so bear with me here.

First off: In the past, I’ve been accused of using my fandom fame to “bully” lesser-known blogs or even sending my followers to attack certain people (despite the fact Ive made multiple posts telling my followers there is no situation where sending hate is justified) so I’d like to preface this by saying I am not calling out any specific blog, fandom group, or shipping community. The purpose of this post is not to cause drama, but rather to bring attention to an issue I think the ML fandom as a whole needs to be aware of.

*ahem* anyways…

PSA

Wanting to “keep the peace” is not a valid reason to shut down real criticisms of real problems in the fandom.

Silencing discourse about important issues because you “want to keep the fandom drama-free” does not make you a saint.

Dismissing or attacking people when they draw attention to glaring problems in the fandom does nothing to help us grow and overcome these problems.

I’ve heard people say that the ML fandom is the nicest they’ve ever been in because there is no conflict. Because we all ship the love square right? Because we all want to see Adrien and Marinette end up together, right?

ML Fandom: We are all united :) love square for life :) how could there possibly be drama? :)

Wait, artists are white-washing canon poc characters?

Wait, re-posters are stealing art and publishing without credit?

Wait, there is nsfw posted in the main fandom tags where children can see it?

Wait, bloggers are romanticizing abusive ships/tropes and exposing them to impressionable minors/actual abuse survivors?

Wait, lgbtaq+ creators are getting hateful comments telling them to “stop interfering with the love square”?

Fandom: “…C’mon guys :/ stop complaining :/ lets keep the fandom drama-free :/…”

Now I get it, online fandom is a form of escape. I fully support the idea that fandom should be a safe space for everyone. As long as you are participating in fandom in a way that DOESN’T PUT OTHER PEOPLE AT RISK, you should be free to blog in peace.

That being said, the problem isn’t that people want a drama-free blogging experience, the problem is that some people are willing to make fandom enjoyable for themselves at the expense of others. They would rather ignore valid criticisms of fandom just because the problem doesn’t effect them personally, then accuse people who continue to draw attention to the problem of “stirring up drama in our good ol wholesome fandom.”

But guess what?

There is no perfect fandom.

If a person of color tells you a piece of content is racist, you listen.

If an artist tells you reposting is wrong, you listen.

If an underage individual (or anyone really) tells you to keep nsfw art out of main tags, you listen.

If an abuse survivor tells you certain content is triggering/ potentially harmful, you listen. (Yes, even if you yourself are an abuse survivor using a scenario to “cope”.)

If an lgbtaq+ individual points out the disproportionate criticism of non-lovesquare (and in most cases non-het) content, you listen.

Ignoring, and in some cases even arguing against these claims doesn’t keep the fandom “drama-free”. Shutting down valid discourse doesn’t make ML Tumblr a “nicer” or “happier” place to be.

All it does is does is alienate marginalized fans who fear that voicing their completely valid concerns over negative fandom trends will get them branded a bully or instigator of drama.

All it does is absolve problematic people of guilt and embolden them to keep engaging in questionable fandom activities because they know the fandom is too concerned with “staying drama free” to do anything about.

All it does is further divide us.

And it needs to stop.

TLDR: If you shut someone down when they are pointing out a valid, important problem in the fandom, you are not trying to make the fandom “nicer for everyone”, you are trying to make the fandom nicer for yourself. Just because a problem doesnt effect you personally doesnt mean its not a problem. There is no such thing as a drama-free fandom, and ignoring key issues for the sake of pretending there is such a thing is irresponsible and disrespectful to marginalized member of the fandom.

I struggled about whether or not to post this, but as a bisexual woman in her 30s with very strong feelings on bullying, I feel I have to.

Yesterday I watched many people from the Mass Effect fandom gang up on someone who made some poorly worded comments about straight love interests that were unintentionally hurtful to bisexuals. From what I can gather, while some users did take the time send politely worded anons or to have proper conversations with this user, it wasn’t many.

The hate I witnessed on that main post was one of the most upsetting things I’ve seen in a while. I watched as vague call out posts appeared and people sent hateful anons to this person. I watched as people reblogged the post to post hate at this person or reply with hateful comments and personal attacks. I watched as the situation would calm down only for yet another person to reblog the post and throw more fuel on the fire. I watched as people stopped reading her posts and just read other people’s replies, reading further and further into her comments. Assuming things she had not said, and things she had not meant to imply.

People are now claiming she said things she did not say; that is unacceptable.

Even as someone who taken aback by what was said, I couldn’t understand why logical adults - people who were just as calm and reasonable as me on any other day of the week - were resorting to mob tactics and posting hate. The personal attacks and nasty insults were awful and constant, sometimes in tags and sometimes in reblogs or comments.

Guys, no matter how angry or hurt you are by something someone has said, it’s never okay to resort to bullying and hate. What I saw yesterday terrified me so much that I didn’t feel safe to say anything on that post. Hate, anger and public humiliation will never change someone’s mind. That is what drives people to self harm and even to suicide. You don’t want that. We are better than that.

I didn’t agree with what this person said, but I listened to what she said and understood it did not represent her own views. I also talked to this person via messager so it was private.

I’m not telling anyone not to be upset or angry, only that sometimes it’s good to walk away for a moment, take some deep breaths, and try to remember that behind every screen is a person. A life. Someone who doesn’t deserve to have a gang of people throwing abuse at them. It’s okay to be hurt and to express that hurt, but personal attacks and comments are never okay.

Everyone is ultimately responsible for their own speech and actions, and hate on this scale is never a good response when someone upsets you - unintentionally or intentionally. That’s all. That’s it. I love you guys very much and I would hate for anyone to be a victim of hate.

anonymous asked:

not to be "that person", but whats your opinion on Dekubaku?

i don’t like it.

there’s ten years of abuse and bullying from Bakugou to Izuku, and i can’t see it ever becoming a healthy relationship in the long run, even if they do resolve their issues. that’s a lot of history, over half of their lives, and a lot of bad blood.

i can see them maybe becoming tentative friends in the future, only after they’ve resolved their issues with each other and Bakugou has sincerely apologized for everything he did to Izuku. but most of their personal issues stem from a misunderstanding of each other.

Izuku’s self confidence was was severely beaten down by Bakugou, and Bakugou’s inferiority complex has been fueled for 10 years by his misunderstanding and fear of Izuku’s intentions.

i just can’t see those lingering feelings ever fully disappearing, and i imagine being in a relationship would only bring those feelings back to the surface.

they’ve never been very good at communicating with each other (it took 10 years before they tried talking, and only because Bakugou was going through an emotional breakdown from his guilt over All Might retiring), and were barely friends as kids, when their relationship was arguably at it’s best. (and even back then, most of what Bakugou did was insult Izuku and show him up for fun. tho it only turned hostile after the incident where Izuku tried to help him)

they can push each other into becoming better heroes and people. Izuku admires Bakugou’s determination and that inspires him, and Bakugou refuses to lose or be left behind by Izuku. Izuku can learn more about winning from Bakugou, and Bakugou can learn more about saving people from Izuku. they’ve finally talked and resolved some of their issues, and have become proper rivals.

but that doesn’t mean their relationship is completely fine now.

plus, neither character has ever particularly liked the other very much. Izuku does admire Bakugou, but he feels a deep sense of antipathy towards him for everything Bakugou’s done to him (which, considering everything, is a very understandable response). Izuku is willing to put aside differences and work with him for the greater good, however. Izuku likes to avoid conflict unless he feels it’s necessary.

Izuku might have some lingering feelings of friendship from back when they were very, very young, but i think they’d be nostalgic, fleeting, and confusing at best. Bakugou never told Izuku why he started bullying him until 10 years later, after all, and that must’ve really confused Izuku.

most of the time tho he actively tries to avoid Bakugou unless the situation forces otherwise.

Bakugou, on the other hand, has never once shown anything but disdain for Izuku. the nicest he ever was was when they were kids, when Bakugou thoughtlessly and harshly mocked Izuku. (which is something that kids who aren’t taught better often tend to do. as in, they tend to say mean and thoughtless things without thinking about how their words affect others. Bakugou never learned how his actions affect others until UA.)

their relationship is getting better, slowly but surely, but i just can’t see them ever having a healthy romantic relationship. i can see them barely having a healthy friendship, and only after certain conditions are made (talking out their issues more and a heartfelt apology from Bakugou).

you can’t just erase 10 years of emotional and physical abuse and conditioning.

there are few things that piss me off on a more personal level than people who do that whole performative body positivity thing

Jimin about J-Hope’s mean side

J-Hope is a bright guy, laugh a lot and has become hopeful like his name. J-Hope has good energy that effects everyone in a good way and i think J-hope is awesome. And people think he’s always nice and innocent. But, inside his smiley face, there’s an evil living there. J-Hope winds me up all the time but never stop smiling even when he does that. But you can never punch someone who looks so happy like that”.

I am a hardcore Johnlock shipper(my OTP) and I do NOTcondone bullying or undermining Mary Morstan. She is a lovely character and does NOT deserve the abuse that she gets from parts of the Johnlock community. Or any community. Opinions are respected, but when it’s used to knock others off their feet– that’s where the respect flies out the window.

This goes for any other character or ship that are being torn down by radical shippers. And it’s not okay..

RFA+V and Saeran finding out that MC is really protective of their s/o and having to hold them back from trying to beating up someone who talked crap about them. I'm not sorry MC will fite anyone. Even themselves. I will go down with this headcanon

Zen

  • Ok, he’s supposed to be the one getting pissed when his director gives him shit???
  • Yet here he is, holding MC back, trying to shut her up so that she doesn’t make things worse for him.
  • “Okay, okay, okay, I’ll apologize, just let me go.”
  • “Sir, you’re lucky to have Zen as part of your cast for this musical. It’s a wonderful production, but I would advise you to treat all of your actors with more respect before it causes a problem.
  • When she turns back around to see the disappointed look on Zen’s face, that’s when she remembers she was supposed to apologize.
  • “Oh yeah, and I’m sorry I tried to punch your face. I hope it helped get my point across, though.”

Yoosung

  • “He called you a what?!?!”
  • “Oh god, MC, please don’t start anything…..!”
  • “No, I’m gonna go give this guy a piece of my mind!!! That’s bullying! God, I hate bullies!”
  • She literally drags Yoosung out of the car and forces him to show her where this asshole might be.
  • “Oh look, the annoying kid’s girlfriend is trying to come to his rescue! What a bunch of freaks! If you have a problem with me, handle it yourself, you fa-”
  • MC’s fist landed hard on his jaw, then she pushed him up against the wall. She’s yelling about respecting others and “people who only have shit to say should keep their goddamn mouths closed!” and Yoosung is freaking out.
  • Yoosung grabs her by the shirt and literally drags her away.
  • “Be assholes to ANYONE again, I dare you! There’s enough of my fist to go around, fellas!”
  • Nobody ever bothered Yoosung again.

Jaehee

  • Okay, all they wanted to do was run to the convenience store for some lunch. The past week, they’d only been able to spend time together at night, assuming that MC wasn’t already asleep by the time Jaehee got home.
  • THEY JUST WANTED TO SPEND TIME TOGETHER
  • According to Jumin, the report that Jaehee had submitted to him earlier in the day was “trash” and she’d have to use her lunch break to fix her mistakes.
  • “MC, you know how Mr. Han is. We can have lunch tomorrow.”
  • “Oh, yeah.. That sound’s good, Jaehee.”
  • …….
  • “You realize that Jaehee is the hardest worker that you’ve ever come into contact with, right?!? Having her work for you is more than you could ever ask for and sure as hell more than you deserve!!!”
  • When Jaehee heard the commotion and ran out, Jumin was pushed up against a wall with the front of his shirt balled up in MC’s fist.
  • Jaehee just sort of picked MC up and ran off with her before any of them got any angrier.

Jumin

  • “Yeah, I did an interview with him a few weeks ago about C&R’s possible cat hotel line, and the guy was awful! Jumin Han is one of the most arrogant bastards I’ve met, and that’s coming from someone who does celebrity interviews for a living.”
  • OHHHHHHH NO HE DID NOT SAY THAT
  • MC called up A! Celebrity News in a rage, requested she get an interview, and damn it, she was not hanging up until she got one.
  • Jumin came with her to the interview. Before they went on the air, MC had a small amount of time to talk to the interviewer.
  • “Actually, I’m not interested in an interview. I only wanted to confront you concerning what you said about my husband earlier this week.”
  • When MC lunged at him, Jumin grabbed around her middle and told her that he doesn’t care about what some shitty news program has to say about him, so neither should she.
  • Jumin literally carried her outside and threw her into the car to avoid being sued.

707

  • He took MC to an amusement park, and they’d been playing games for hours.
  • The guy at the dunk tank was insulting everyone who walked by, calling them “scrawny,” or “weak,” or even shouting “Hey ugly!” at some of them.
  • When he shouted “Hey, little frilly thing in the pink! Think your frail little arms can take me down?” at MC, she was sucked in.
  • She got three goes at it, and every time she missed, the dunkee laughed.
  • “Oh, why don’t you give the boy a try? He’s obviously been working out, what with the juggling and everything! God, the clowns really do get more breaks than us!” He started touching his hair, implying that it was Seven’s red hair that ‘gave him away.’
  • MC’s last ball missed, making her sigh and the man in the tank laugh. “Hey, Maybe you should be getting back to your posse! I think I saw balloon animals and red hair go that way!”
  • MC WAS NO LONGER DRY AND THEY’RE BOTH NO LONGER WELCOME AT THE AMUSEMENT PARK.

V

  • MC wasn’t really paying attention, and V literally didn’t see where he was going.
  • When V bumped into a guy with two waters in his hands, he immediately apologized.
  • “Fucking idiot, watch where you’re going. You fuckin’ blind of something?”
  • None of the water had even spilled?? Why the hell was he so angry?????
  • And he picked on something that V couldn’t control???? oh no.
  • MC took both of the waters from him, dumped them both on top of his head, then threw the cups at his face.
  • V grabbed around MC’s waist, picked her up, and started walking in the opposite direction.
  • “Darling, I don’t know where we’re going, but we’re going somewhere to calm down.”

Saeran

  • If someone so much as thinks something bad about Saeran, MC is going to kick ass.
  • Saeran waits for her to do some damage before he actually tries to help.
  • Fights are exciting and she usually wins anyways. What do you want from him????
  • They’re banned from quite a few places because one of them ends up fighting someone almost every time they leave the house.

I couldn’t keep my promise

Waaa!!! I really love Chloé so much okay!!

13 Reasons Why rant

I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed opinions on the show so I just wanna share mine, as a person who has attempted suicide and as a person who’s friend committed suicide.

Honestly, people are missing the whole point of the show. Yes, suicide is the choice of the person who does it, but the actions and inactions of people in their life factor in on that choice, which is the whole point of the show.

The show is not a suicide prevention show, I’m sorry, it’s not. The main message of the show is to watch what you say and do to people and how you treat them because you never know what that negative impact could have on them. Showing a graphic suicide, which I agree was even a bit much for me to witness, was just an added shock value to really embed the message that your words have consequences.

I hate this mentality that bullying doesn’t cause suicide, because I know first hand that it sure as hell factors in on the situation. When you feel like your at the point of no return and have no one, your brain is swimming with negative thoughts, with the words others have said to you or said about you.

This is why Hannah tried to find love, not because love will fix everything when you’re depressed, but because she wanted just one happy thing, just one person who could show her they cared. I too became very codependent on someone just for the hope that that little bit of happiness could keep me going.

Not everyone who has dealt with these issues can relate to Hannah, and that’s okay if you don’t like it. I don’t recommend anyone who is dealing with these issues to watch because it is graphic and potentially triggering.

But I beg everyone else to watch so they can understand how much power their words have over people. I beg everyone who watches it walks away with a different outlook on life and the way they treat other people. I beg everyone reaches out and help and supports the Hannah Bakers in their lives.

How to fix LOT season 2

1. STOP THE MICK BULLYING!!!!!!!!!

2. Bring back Kendra…. like, say Carter was an idiot and he died or something because -_- Carter. Kendra was the most Mama Bird of them all

3. LEONARD SNART!!!!!!!!!!! Should have been #2 but come on, this season ruined him. Especially for my fanfiction so yeah.

4. Again, if we could have Mick actually be trusted because he’s been with these assholes for over a year, endured 74 years of Stasis and even more time being Chronos, only to be mocked and scorned and just WTF!!!!

5. Mick and Leonard.

6. Lisa Snart. Bring Lisa Snart back! MAKE HER THE QUEEN OF THE ROGUES OR SOME SHIT
