i had to wait for the books

anonymous asked:

Buffy asks Giles for advice about how to ask Willow out?

((this got just long enough to throw half under a cut))

“So, uh. Hey… Giles. I was, um…. wondering…”

“Hmm?” Giles asks, looking up from his stack of books. “Yes, what is it, Buffy? You seem a little…” He pauses, searching for the right word. “Perturbed.”

“What? No. No, no, no. No perturbation happening here. I just, ah… had a question? To ask, uh… you.”

Giles waits for the question, frowning slightly. “Is something wrong?”

“No!” Buffy says again. “I just… I’m–I’mthinkingaboutaskingWillowout.”

“Sorry? I didn’t quite catch that.”

“I’m thinking about asking Willow out,” Buffy says again, more carefully, like she can’t believe she’s actually saying this out loud to Giles. “And I was wondering if you had advice. Since, you know… you’re a grown-up. And Ms Calendar seems to like you, even though you’re old and stuffy, so you must know some things about it, and–”

“Yes, I get the idea,” Giles says, cutting off her rambling. He takes off his glasses and polishes them before placing them back on his nose. “You really want my advice?”

theodoradove  asked:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was born in Brooklyn in 1933. She meets Steve Rogers pre- or post-freezing.

OR BOTH!

1942:

It was nice to be back in New York, Steve thought, after touring the whole country with the Star Spangled Show. Even better, once the show was done here, they were going overseas – not into combat, but at least it was a start. It made him cheer up just to think about it, and he maybe threw a little extra flair into the show every night, took a little extra time at the stage door.

“What’s your name?” he asked, crouching to get on eye-level with the little girl who had been patiently waiting behind several taller, pushier people.

“Ruth,” she said shyly, offering him her autograph book.

“Lovely name,” he replied. “Did you like the show?”

She nodded. “I liked the dancing.”

“You gonna be a dancer when you grow up?”

“Nuh uh,” she said.

“What’re you gonna be?”

“A judge,” she said.

“Yeah? You gonna make sure justice is done?”

She nodded soberly.

“Well, Ruth, you gotta study hard, you know that, right?” he asked, as he signed her book. “I expect to see you on the bench someday.”

“Thank you,” she murmured, stepping back, and another handful of kids surged around her. Cute kid.

2012:

Steve had always liked Civics in school, but when you had to catch up on seventy years between your last history class and the present, it could get a little overwhelming. On the other hand, celebrity was good for something; when he’d been working on memorizing the names and major cases of the Supreme Court justices, Tony had said, “Well, do you want to meet them?”

A couple of long phone calls and a few weeks later, Steve passed through a LOT of security, down a hallway, and into a courtroom; it was early in the morning, ahead of the open public hours, and the room smelled like coffee. A tiny bird of a woman in a black gown was standing in front of the seating box.

“Captain,” she said, as he shook her hand.

“Justice Ginsburg, right?” he asked. “It’s an honor, ma’am.”

“I feel the same,” she said, and there was something very familiar about her smile. “I wanted to get here a little earlier than everyone else, to speak to you in private.”

He was opening his mouth, about to ask why, when she reached into a pocket of the robe and took out a battered leather book, the kind kids used to collect autographs in.

“I don’t suppose you remember, you must have signed a lot of autographs,” she said. “But back in the war, just before you left for overseas, I went to see your bond show.”

Steve looked down. Scrawled on the page was his clumsy signature and, in slightly better lettering, To Judge Ruth. Study Hard!

He looked up at her, eyes wide. “No, I remember – I asked if you wanted to be a dancer and you said no, you were going to be a judge.”

“You were the first adult outside of my family who didn’t sneer at a girl wanting to be a judge,” she said.

“Well,” Steve said faintly. “Guess you must have studied.”

“Captain America said he wanted to see me on the bench. Couldn’t very well let him down,” she replied, and Steve laughed.

I know people who graduated college at 21, and didn’t get a salary job until they were 27. I know people who graduated at 25 and already had a salary job. I know people who have children and are single. I know people who are married and had to wait 8-10 years to be parents. I know people who are in a relationship and love someone else. I know people who love each other and aren’t together. There are people waiting to love and be loved. My point is, everything in life happens according to our time, our clock. You may look at your friends and some may seem to be ahead or behind you, but they’re not, they’re living according to the pace of their clock, so be patient. You’re not falling behind, it’s just not your time.

Book Geek Quote

ok but imagine that after recovering the book and talking with Fu, Ladybug tells Chat about it (Adries is obviously internal screaming because ‘holy shit Ladybug has father’s book’) and she shows him some photos of the book she managed to took and then the Peacock miraculous appears and Chat is like ‘wait i have seen this before…’ And he remembers seeing it inside his father’s safe.

And Adrien minds kind of shortcut because he concludes that his father must have been/be a holder and now he wants to talk to him because ‘omg my father had/has a miraculous! we can talk about it! i can ask him and not hide anything since he already knows and had a book!’

So Adrien returns to his house and is beaming and excited because he can finally talk to someone about him being Chat Noir and finally have bonding time with his father. And wothout listening to Plagg because Adrien is way too happy, he runs into his father office and tells him:

‘Father, I know who you are! I know you have a Miraculous! I have it too! I’m Chat Noir! We can fight together! We can do superhero things together! We can be a team and fight with Ladybug against Hawkmoth!′

‘We can be a family again!’

And Gabriel just pales.

“I just can’t wait to forget how much it hurts,” she said. My little sister, 17 and naive and so in love, had woken me up at 2am, crying because her boyfriend had broken up with her. “I never want to remember what I’m feeling right now.”

I pet her hair back as her head laid in my lap. “But you will remember it,” I told her. “You always will. Even ten years from now, when three other boys have come and gone since him, you will remember it. Because this is the only time you will have believed every word he said. This is the only time your whole heart will get involved. This is the only time you will be blindsided.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “You’ll remember this pain for the rest of your life. But pain is natural. It’s how we protect ourselves.”

—  excerpt from an unfinished book #133

I have been waiting forever to share this with people who would appreciate it but I had to wait until they went public about it.

SO. On Christmas Eve my brother came over to celebrate Christmas with the family like he always does. My gift is a giant brown paper wrapped package tied with string. I opened it up and SUPRISE

The hard cover harry potter book collection. I have always wanted once since I was removed from my moms house and her boyfriend destroyed my old copies. So this was like, the greatest present ever because it was sooo expensive. So I open it up to bask in its glory when I notice the Chamber of Secrets is turned over. I just thought it was a packing mistake so I go to flip it over and a little blue sock falls out.

And by now I’m like WAIT.

and in the sock is a little note for me.

“We solemnly swear we were up to no good and because we managed to get into some mischief, it looks like you’re finally free to be the best aunt ever!”

AHHHHHHHHHH

I just wanted to share probably the BEST announcement ever with you guys. I am so happy and excited. I have nicknamed it “Dobby” because they are waiting to find out the gender until it’s born.

Things I wish somebody had told me in the beginning: witch edition
  • This is not a competition. Take it slow, enjoy the journey. You do not need to learn every crystal correspondence within a week.
  • Keep a journal/Grimoire/Book of Shadows if possible. Fill it up as you go. Do not just put the information somewhere to wait until you “have time” or “have more energy” (although these, and many more, are understandable reasons). It is less work to do a little all the time than try to catch up all at once.
  • You don’t need to be anything to be a witch. You are one, regardless of your gender, skin color, religious interests… If you think you’re one, you are. Witchcraft is a path, a tool, not a religion.
  • Wicca and witchcraft are not the same.
  • It is totally okay to take breaks. Setting aside your craft doesn’t mean you can’t come back and continue where you left off.
  • YOU are the most important tool. You do not need that expensive cauldron, or those rare herbs that have a double-digit price. Of course, supplies are needed for more complicated/powerful spells to help you out, but they are not necessary.
  • If your path changes, that is okay! If you were first interested in spells but then decided to focus more on deities and their worship, that’s okay!
  • On that note, it’s also okay to not know what your path is.
  • Like all people, witches have their opinions about various things. Listen carefully to both sides, research, but in the end make your own opinion that fits with your morals and worldview. Neither side is necessarily wrong, but both can be true.
  • Trust your gut/intuition. It knows a lot. If someone says X has Y correspondences, but in your opinion has Z, then this is true to you.
  • When researching things, remember to be critical and not trust everything you read blindly. Cross-reference.
  • Educate yourself on closed religions, slur words, racist symbols, appropriation of cultures and their words (see:smudging, chakra…) Do not be angry at yourself if you have used them before - you are always learning and growing as a person.
  • When in doubt, ask. The community is friendly and many are more than happy to help you. Asking never hurts, but don’t treat others as your Google.
  • Do not abandon science nor common sense. Witchcraft is powerful, and certain areas have direct influence (using herbs, for example), but it does not replace healthcare, therapy, or otherwise being healthy.
  • Practice safety. There is a reason why people tell you in rituals/spells/etc. to do things to protect yourself. When doing witchcraft, you are dealing with great powers and energy - sometimes that might be malicious.
  • Also, some general things like fire safety, checking for crystal toxicities in various substances, and herb properties are important to keep track of - these are physical things that can seriously harm you; and definitely work. Do not doubt that.
  • Do not lose yourself. While witchcraft gives us great power, it sometimes makes us lose ourselves. One might become so absorbed in their path that they forget things like eating, checking on friends, doing hobbies, and so forth. This path is part of your life, but your life does not consist only of the path.
  • Have fun! I believe this is one of the most important things. Witchcraft does not need to be serious; it can be Legos, glitter, pop-culture gods, sigils doodled with eyeliner… The possibilities are limitless!

Ok so I’ve finally gotten around to doing this highly requested post based off this post and I’m sorry to all those who had been waiting for ages for it to come out but here it is!!!

How to Annotate a Novel Efficiently

Look I’m actually doing the play Medea at the moment so this can be used for other texts apart from novels too!

Like I’ve said before, I know lots of people don’t want to taint their texts with writing and highlighting, but to me, it is so so satisfying when I finish with a fully annotated book with tabs flying out of every page and all that, plus it acts as a sweet resource once it’s done.

((Hopefully by the time you’ve gotten around to this level of annotating, you’ve read through your text already and maybe even put down some initial thoughts in the margins.))

To put it simply, I have three levels of coordination when it comes to annotating a novel: words, tabs and sticky notes.

1. Sticky notes

  • Use for big chunks of text you can’t fit in the margins of your book, such as summaries of characters, themes, etc
  • They can also get those big chunks of info to stand out from the rest of the novel
  •  If you’re reading a larger text with chapters, it’s quite handy to use big sticky notes to summarise each section.

2. Tabs (and highlighting)

  • Yep so these are the tabs I have sticking out of my book and they’re used for quick references, where I can easily search up a type of quote quickly in the novel without having to flip through every page.
  • The colours of the tabs I use are the same colours as my highlighters, so it is easy to see where the quote is and which tab it corresponds to.
  • ACTUALLY HIGHLIGHT the specific quote rather than leaving a tab there by itself, for future reference when you need a specific quote, but if you’ve got a massive chunk that is just too important to pick out a small quote, use a square bracket on the inside margin. Smaller quotes are better.
  • Have a tab for broad topics such as characters, themes, literary devices, plot developments, context, etc. If you have more colours, you can always make your categories more specific (for me, the character of Medea is separate to the rest of the characters)
  • I write the main idea on the tab itself, a.k.a. the reason why I highlighted or tabbed that quote there.
  • Which quotes to highlight depends on

a)     What we go through in class

b)     What is written as an important quote in the text guide we are given/the internet suggests

c)     What I think is important. If you’re not sure, ask yourself WHY is that quote important and if you can answer that, highlight it!!!

3. Words

  • The further explanation of quotes is written on the actual pages, and often right under a tab to elaborate.
  • I recommend using a thin pen as in 0.38 to really fit in as much as possible.
  • This step as well as tabbing is so so important, because you can highlight as much as you want, but it really won’t mean anything until you’ve written down its significance, and even if you have an amazing memory, this is vital ok. Even a few words along the margin explaining the quote can mean the difference between good writing and great writing in your upcoming essay.
  • What do I actually write? If it’s a literary device, I’ll name it (e.g. Metaphor) and explain its symbolism, or the author’s intention for putting that in. If it’s a theme related quote, I’ll explain the message that the author is trying to convey through that quote. If it’s a character related quote, I’ll explain how that quote adds to their character, maybe finding contrasts, etc.
  • Supplies that I used were:

- Mildliners (pink, orange, yellow, blue, aqua; gotta get that colour coding)

- Pilot Frixion Point

- Uni-ball Signo TSI (erasable like the frixion pen so that if I’m not too sure about what I’ve written as an annotation, I can check with the teacher and erase if need be)

- A set of 1000 tabs in total, divided among pink, orange, yellow, green and blue

- Pastel square sticky notes

As an optional step, I highly recommend making use of the back cover or spare pages in the book. I use them for writing definitions of recurring words, good vocabulary to use in the future when writing the essay and also character maps, explaining the relationship between each character.

I hope you all find this helpful!

((disclaimer: this is just how I do it so don’t shank me pls))

things maybe those other novelization posts missed

there’s been a couple of posts about the novelization highlights going around but whatever the world needs my thoughts right????

really just a rehash of my livetweeting sometimes direct copy and paste but whatever. LMAO THIS IS LIKE 5 PAGES LONG WELP SORRY FRIENDS.

  • Even the excerpts from the rogue one novelization have not prepared me for the utter DRAMA that is cassian andor in this book omg
  • everything about bodhi rook made me cry. HE DOUBTS HIMSELF. THE ONLY THING HE’S SURE OF IS THAT HE’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
  • WHEN JYN IS AT THE LABOR CAMP JUST SO WE’RE ALL CLEAR SHE’D “RUN OUT OF FRIENDS.” SHE WAS WAITING TO DIE. HER CELLMATE HAD EVEN SAID SHE WAS GOING TO KILL HER AND JYN WAS LIKE “eh, the fight will at least be entertaining. I’m pretty bored so”
  • Hi. Just wanted to let you know that after Cassian said like 10 words to Jyn, she was imagining them on a date.
  • Jyn also is careful to try and shield cassian from a blast in Jedha city like you know just for safety and stuff. And standing close to each other. SAFETY THO.
  • Cassian: I’m cold, I bet Jyn’s cold. I’m tired, she’s probably exhausted. She beat the shit out of those guys, IS SHE CONCUSSED? CHILL, BUD
  • the. entire. time.

I lit a cigarette thinking I was strong enough to smoke it, but I instantly remembered I promised you I wouldn’t smoke anymore. I promised you I would stop my bad habits. So I watched it burn. Oh, how it burned so fucking slowly. It was torture. Waiting for the damn thing to go out already. Waiting for the wind to blow out the fire I had started. The fire that you started in my heart. The spark you lit the first time you told me you loved me. You were my first cigarrette. You were my first drug, and damn I’m hooked on you. You are the drug that I will never quit…
I got tired of waiting for the wind to come. I got tired of watching the fire burn the paper. The paper burning the tobacco into smoke. The smoke turning my lungs to ash. I got tired of cigarrettes the day I told you I would stop smoking. I got tired of cigarettes the day you told me you were leaving because of my bad habits. I got tired…
The wind blew some of the ash onto the sidewalk and I continued waiting.
I pressed the fire against my neck to stop the flame. To stop the cancer stick from burning any longer. And despite the small red mark on my neck, the fire had finally stopped burning.
But the fire in my heart? That hasn’t stopped. The wind being your lips, never blew it out and I don’t think they ever will. It continues to grow like a wildfire spreading through the woods on a dark night, never even knowing it had started until the trees were burning down. The spark you lit the first time you told me you loved me.. You were my first cigarrette. You started this fire that continues to grow inside me.
You are the drug that I will never quit…
—  saywecanella (I thought I could stop the fire burning inside me, but I could never stop loving you…)

He’d loved her from the moment they’d met. He saw it in her eyes - he was sure she was destined for him. But she was broken and their timing was off, so he waited an entire year.

And now, he had wrapped a hand around the back of her neck and pulled her in for a kiss. It was everything he’d imagined and wanted it to be for the last 365 days. He felt like he was on top of the world. He felt like all of the waiting was finally worth it.

But then, he pulled away, and he saw it in her eyes before her lids had even fully lifted. She needed another year alone. She still wasn’t ready. So, they smiled politely at each other and went on with the night.

“Happy New Year,” he told her.

“Happy New Year,” she said.

—  excerpt from an unfinished book #135 // “I’d love you but I need another year alone” - 7
“I’m just asking this one thing of you.” Her voice was calm, but it wasn’t enough to cover the storm that raged inside of her. He already knew what she was going to ask. To be frank, he’d been waiting for it, had thought it’d happen every time they locked eyes. But she’d given him the silent treatment, waiting for him to make the first move and explain. He hadn’t caved in, not to the coldness in her eyes or the stubborn tilt of her jaw. Yet. Apparently she’d run out of patience.
“Why do you keep pushing me away? Be honest with me.” Honest. That word alone drove a hundred needles into his skull. If there was one thing he sucked at, it was honesty, especially if it concerned people he loved. Especially if it led to him admitting to a weakness. Admitting to fear.
“Every time I think I managed to get through to you, it’s like you never heard me at all. It’s like you don’t even try to listen. You’re not making an effort.” How very wrong she was but that too was something she could not know. Something he could not say out loud because words had a funny way of backfiring and making things even worse.
“You’re right. I’m not making an effort. I don’t want to. I don’t care.” Her face fell and his heart sank. What kind of person was he to protect his own skin, to let her put her heart on the line and not give anything in return?
“I think you do,” she said quietly. “I think you see where this is going and you’re scared so you’re trying to make me leave on my own. But I won’t. I won’t leave you no matter how often you push me away.”
“You want me to be honest?” She nodded and straightened, throwing her shoulders back. Every inch of her was attentive.
“I fall in love hard and fast. It takes as much time for me to fall out of love. I open my heart, I get attached, everything is fine until it isn’t. Until someone ends up breaking my heart or I break theirs and it always ends in fights and screams and tears and I’m sick of it.” Without noticing his hands had balled into fists. Heat rose in his cheeks. Never had he meant to lose control like this. His tone softened. “If I don’t risk anything, I don’t lose. That’s it. It’s not your fault.”
She reached for his hand and squeezed, gentle but firm.
“But you don’t know how it ends before you start, do you? You cannot possibly know.” Every part of him wanted to pull away, had to pull away, but he couldn’t. He’d been running for so long, struggling so hard, twisting and winding and always escaping. But he was tired. His very soul was tired.
“Because if you don’t risk anything, you can’t win, either,” she whispered, pulling him closer and closer until the only thing he wanted to be was honest with her. Until he no longer wanted to escape.
—  I’ll risk it for you / n.j.

Me: This Chaol novel is gonna be so great! I trust SJM and he deserves a full length story. It’s so great that we get an entire book about disability and this will enhance the ToG world so much and I can’t wait to see Yrene again!! So pumped.

Me to me: I’d trade Chaol’s life for the last ToG book to come out in September.

Seventh tattoo! Took me three years since my last one to get it but it was worth the wait. The Raven Cycle became my favorite series last year. The story, the characters, the endless resources for memes… it makes me happy. @maggie-stiefvater and all the articles she writes, how she tells stories, really inspires me and meeting her at Hal-Con last year definitely helped my own writing and got me motivated again. Thank you for this quote and for putting Henry Cheng in book 4. I might be afraid of many things, but that isn’t going to stop me from being happy. (Tattoo done by Becky M)

Communication Problems

Context: we were starting a homebrew campaing, and the characters were: a blind minotaur, a fairy, a human and a mute goblin who communicates via text on a paper. The fairy hates the human. We had to find an inportant book for the minotaur, but we had to pay a gigantic entry free that we didn’t had

Human: So, why don’t we break in the library?
Minotaur: No we can’t, I don’t like this idea. It’s better that we do some missions and pick money to enter.
Human, hella pissed: Okay, fine, you can do what you want, but I won’t stand here waiting. And fairy - *picks fairy* - I need to have a converstion with you.

So the four are separated in two groups: Fairy and Human, and Goblin and Minotaur.

Human: Okay fairy, I think is time to make a truce: We go to the library, steal the book, make that stupid minotaur pay a ton, and split the money between us. What do you think?
Fairy: I think you got a new ally for the time being!
And the two do a bro fist, with the human almost killing the fairy.

Minotaur: So, let’s pick some missions already, shall we?
Goblin, passing a paper note to the BLIND minotaur: …
Minotaur:
Minotaur (OOC): I GOT STUCK WITH THE MUTE GOBLIN.
DM, laughing like there’s no tomorrow: YOU JUST REALISED THAT!?
Minotaur (OOC): The blind minotaur stuck with the mute goblin, with no means of communication, what could go wrong?
Human (OOC): *laughing at the minotaur’s demise*
Minotaur (OOC), laughing too: Oh god, shut up.

Do I love you?” She sniggered,
“I’m not sure. Sometimes I think I do. But then other times I think about the blood in the sink when my sister’s boyfriend told her he didn’t love her anymore, I remember we spent 7 hours in A&E waiting to hear if she’d be okay.
Sometimes I think I love you but then other times I think about the time I had to rush to my best friends house after she found out her boyfriend cheated on her, I swear to god she still has tear streaks stained on her cheeks.
Sometimes I think I love you but then other times I think about how my teacher was out sick for almost a month because she was going through a divorce, when she came back her hands shook so much, she couldn’t even hold a cup of coffee without half of it going all over the work desk, her eyes were tired and it looked like she hadn’t ate in weeks. I remember the entire class passed that semester, which was strange because I didn’t even complete half the test, I don’t think she didn’t even read the papers.
Sometimes, I really do think I love you,
But sometimes I don’t think I want to know what love feels like.
—  Excerpt of a book I’ll never write/ it’s not that I don’t love you
