i had to teach myself

1. What were some of the things you originally had to do when you were trying to enter the illustration market? Job wise or assignment-wise, and did you find it more difficult to find work in the specific area you wanted to be in?

I worked for a long time doing IT work - programming and that sort of thing. I don’t have an art degree, so I had to teach myself a few things over a long period of time - things I’m still learning.

I worked in offices and tried to squeeze my art in in the evenings and weekends. It’s an exhausting schedule and takes a toll on things. But one benefit was my earliest work wasn’t pressured by commercial concerns. I’m always trying to a place where my work isn’t pressured by commercial concerns. Coming from a working class background, that is a difficult place for me to find and stay.

2. You have certainly well-versed yourself in the various forms of illustration (Children’s books, comics, character design, etc.), what unique challenges does each avenue entail?

Books and comics require a lot of solitary work. The cons and pros are evident. It can be lonely but there is much more freedom; it requires greater temerity than the constant feedback of television work. Animation is a collaborative effort. It’s very inspiring to work with other people, but you often have to suppress your own instincts.

3. Any advice for someone like me, hoping to eventually break into the world of character design and children’s books?

Sink into your own interests, thoughts, experiences - to a place untouched by the noise of commercial or career concerns. Explore that area; bring back everything and share it with other people.

Carmilla worries about her tiny human (even if she doesn’t always show it)

i 100% believe garrus had actual lessons from squadmates for being physically romantic with shepard, because with him being new to it, there’s no way he did that drop-swing thing with her on top of the freaking presidium willy nilly

Okay so some people asked me to post some selfies so here they are! 😊🙈

Also some people asked me some questions about myself so here they are too!

What’s your name?

Marianne, but you can call me Mazzi 😁

Where are you from?

I’m from England! Although I was born in Thailand and my mother is Thai and my dad is English. But I look more English and Thai and I have a British accent so I normally just say I’m English 😂

What are your aspirations?

I want to be an actress! I wanna be in films and tv shows so I can see people make gifs of me and stuff cause idk 😂😅 I really wanna be in a batman film. I have loved batman from a young age and I want a Batman tattoo!

What languages can you speak?

Well obviously I’m fluent in English, and I know a few languages I’m just not fluent in them; I know Spanish, Thai and I’m teaching myself Romanian! 😊

If you had to choose a character to date out of any universe or anything, who would it be?

It’s a tie between Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd really, but I guess by how I image my ‘type’ is, I would have to say Jason Todd.

What got you into writing?

It’s a long story but in short, I just wanted to try it out! Plus it’s a good hobby and I enjoy it a lot!

Most things precious to you?

1. Sleep
2. Batman (and Jason Todd 😆)
3. Tv and Film
4. Food
5. My phone
6. Family
7. Friends
8. That’s all I can think of at the moment 😂
9. Ooooo I forgot books!
10. And drawing!

What’s your favourite colour?

Black and Red.

Do you prefer Batman or superman?

Batman. 💯

What is your style?

Well I like leather jackets, jeans, dr martens/timberland boots, oversized tshirts and hoodies and anything.

I guess you could say my style is like 'bad girl’ or 'biker girl’ or just a female Jason Todd.

What’s your personality like?

I’m horrendously dirty minded. I’m a sarcastic little shit and I tend to swear a lot 🙈 but I guess I’m nice and I care a lot I just tend to come off as someone who doesn’t care and is a cold hearted bitch. But! Once you get to know me apparently my friend calls me “a huge, dorky, loving teddy bear.”

Another friend also told me, before we we’re friends, that when she first saw me she thought I wanted to kill her because of my apparent “bitch face” and my headphones were in and I was listening to like slipknot or something 😂

That’s all the questions I think that I have been given, if you want to ask me ANYTHING - come ask! 😊 or if you just wanna talk that’s fine too 😋

Hi, I've had to teach myself French, and although I'm currently at a* GCSEs level, I need to gat to a* A level, any tips? Also, love your blog!

Hi! I haven’t studied French beyond year 9 so I haven’t particularly got much advice that would be useful for learning it at a more critical level. However here are a couple of links:

You could also check out my studyblr directory list and click ‘language’ and then message anyone under the French category. I’m sure they’ll be able to provide much better and personalised advice! Sorry I couldn’t help more. Thank you though! :-) xx

Thank you so much! Your blogs are amazing, and I hope you have a great day.

kids these days are so smart and i mean like 12-15 year old kids are so much more wise and woke than i was im glad you all know how to self explore in healthy ways and im glad you are learning what is and isnt an okay way for adults to treat you and how to say you’re not comfortable and stand up for yourselves but still have fun and be the children that you are you’re all so inspiring i hope you have really good happy lives

“If you were to ask me five years ago if I ever saw myself being completely in love with fitness and health. That I would be an inspiration to many others, that I would be the push that others needed to find their way. I would’ve laughed in your face. Me? The chubby one? No way! But now I can’t see myself ever stopping! I am completely honored and taking my role seriously in helping motivate and teach people what I had to learn to better myself from the inside out. Becoming stronger mentally so I can’t let the little things break me down. I see myself only getting better and better! I can’t believe how far I have come! I almost can’t believe that was me! If you’ve lost your motivation don’t beat yourself up about it, negative thoughts only turn into negative realities. By keeping positive about your body, your inner health, your mental sanity, your fitness and what you’re trying to achieve, you’re way more likely to succeed. My fitness journey was for myself and myself alone. On my terms and on my timeline! Cheers to us becoming better than we were yesterday! #RevengeBody” (x)

here’s some half-pages from a zine that I’ve been working on for a school project (which is due next week Yikes. pray that i can churn out all my pages by then)

I LEARNED A TWO FOOT SPIN TODAY guys this is so fun. I told my teacher I want to learn lunges like the little kid class was too.

AHHHHH YAY, spinning is really fun!!

Interesting fact: I never learnt a two foot spin until I had to teach them myself.

My coach is Russian and where she trained they just didn’t bother teaching their students two foot spins, rather they used one foot spins as the basic and cross foot/scratch spins as the first spin. And therefore that was actually how I learnt to spin. fun fact.

Lunging is really fun, when we did lunging later on (as this hellish fitness exercise on ice that tore my hamstrings multiple times) we used to turn them into knee slides when the teacher wasn’t looking.

Anyway, that is awesome and I leave you with Yuna Kim’s Yuna Camel

med school: expectations versus reality.

I decided that I was going to medical school when I was fourteen. I was going to complete my schooling, go straight into medical school, do my internship at some big fancy hospital, save a lot of lives, and then train as a psychiatrist.

I checked off the first two. And then medical school was happened and completely messed up my plans.

Expectation: I can use the same study techniques I used in high school.

If I’m being honest, I coasted through high school. Then I almost flunked the first semester because I assumed I could do the same thing. Med school is hard, not only because it’s complex, but because there’s a lot of it to learn. Instead of having discrete subjects with set deadlines and small classes, medicine is a huge volume of material, the only deadline is the exam, and the classes are made up of hundreds of people.

I had to teach myself how to study for the first time. I wasn’t the only one.

Expectation: I don’t need to learn anatomy/biology/pharmacology because I’m going into (insert specialty here)!

It’s easy to say that we don’t need to know this because we’re going into this specialty, or that specialty. But take the example of an elderly gentleman with hypertension. We can’t look at it solely from a physiological point of view because that misses the pharmacological management. If we choose to treat our patient with a beta-blocker, we need to remember to ask our patient about a past history of asthma. The patient may have an inherent mistrust of doctors because he feels that they missed his wife’s ovarian cancer three decades ago – how do you communicate the importance of managing his blood pressure without dismissing his previous experiences?

No area of medicine exists in a vacuum. Most of what they teach in medical school, they teach it for a reason. There’s a lot of it, but we still need to learn it, no matter what we choose to specialize in.

Expectation: It’ll be just like Grey’s Anatomy!

It’s not. I met one person that good looking in my medical school days, he was married, and there were definitely no elevator dalliances. In fact, I’m pretty sure he didn’t learn my name… but that is entirely beside the point. The wards are not an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, where strange diseases run rife, junior doctors drink all night and then work all day, and no one ever seems to do that much paperwork.

As soon as we hit clinical medicine, we learn to do paperwork. If we party all night, we’re not safe to practice during the day. Doctors don’t use elevators – they take the stairs, it’s quicker. And trust me, the stairways are not ideal for mid-round throwdowns.

Expectation: it’s all about saving lives!

No one saves lives in the first year of med school. Before we can learn to save lives, we have to learn the physiology, anatomy, biology, and psychology of the human body. We can’t diagnose without understanding how everything works. No one becomes a doctor by merely entering medical school. It takes years to even feel remotely doctor-ish. And I’m two years out of med school, and I still haven’t saved a life.

Expectation: I can survive without sleep/I can do it all!

I tried really hard for years to ‘do it all’. Work after university. Study after work. Socialise. Do all the things. But if I didn’t sleep, I couldn’t go to university because I couldn’t function. If I didn’t work, I couldn’t socialize because no money. I went to the gym instead of class because I needed to be healthy.

Yes, one can do it all. But not all at once. A lot of people need to work to afford med school – I did. But  plan your time and have reasonable expectations. If you need sleep, don’t hit that party tonight. Try and schedule work hours in such a way to leave time for studying. Make getting to class a priority. Don’t try and be everything to everyone all the time. Self-care is important.

So, medical school didn’t meet my expectations. But it was still pretty incredible – and it taught me that maybe, what I had wanted wasn’t really what I wanted for my life.

A,D, and I for the asks?

Do you have any autistic friends? What are your favourite things to do together? I do! And we are going to a con together I’m so excited for us to cosplay (and stim) together 🌱

What was your first special interest? Do you remember anything about it? Pokemon!!! I remember that I convinced my parents to get me the pokemon version of game boy color and a pokemon game by telling them it would teach me to read, but I had already taught myself how to read. (I remember a lot of actual pokemon facts and stuff but that’s also cause I still play it)

What’s the cutest/sweetest thing anyone has ever done to accommodate you? Honestly everything my partner does. They’re learning ASL with me, they help me in public, and make sure we are okay and that I always have my tangle, headphones, and chew when we leave 💚
