what are some really important pointers you have for people who want to make animatics?
this is probably gonna be a bit long so just a heads up i guess?? also please note im not a student for anything in art and am not a professional i’m just giving out my opinions on this and things based on my own experience.
you don’t always have to start it with the actual frame and the drawing for thumbnailing doesn’t have to be good. this is just to let you have a feel of what you want for the final frame. it also doesn’t have to be digital you can just doodle it in some paper you found lying about. this is also good for parts of your animatics where there’s lots of movement(like dancing!)
thumbnailing is also good for parts where you have multiple ideas! doodle all your possible ideas and see which one is best for that scene
these are super cool and can help with the atmosphere of the scene! for example:
they also just look really nice and interesting and fun
landscapes and backgrounds
you can’t always have just a bunch of people gathered around all in one frame, you gotta show the setting of the whole thing
this also allows for your characters to move around more! don’t always make them flat like this though(this doesn’t mean you can’t do this, just don’t do it all the time)
grab a ruler or if you don’t have one like me, zoom out completely and try to make straight lines(they don’t rlly have to be perfectly straight though! but don’t make them too slanted either)
and if you have sai, free deform it and set the perspective to 100% and then just mess around with it!
also remember to add buildings/furniture/etc if needed!!
do dynamic poses
these help the facial expressions of the character! a lot of people seem to just concentrate on just the face for emotion but body language is also important!
you can throw in some perspective into this as well!
make a LOT of frames
as mentioned above, movement is very exciting!! and you can show movement with those frames. it doesn’t even have to be a lot of movement like one second they were there and now they’re in an entirely different spot, subtle movement is also very good!
try not to reuse the same frame too much! it might end up looking very awkward
also try not to just erase and add things to the body of a character as if it were some kind of paper doll stuck to a wall like this:
it’ll end up looking very stiff and awkward. instead, just redraw the character completely! make them move around a bit
you don’t always have to make things super clean
you don’t have to do clean lineart, just doodle a frame and make it easy to read for everyone on what’s happening. especially because drawing hundreds of frames is already so time consuming and not to mention stressful. do yourself a favor and not tire yourself out more than you should.
that’s kind of all the pointers i have. hope this helps!!!
how do 38 people reblog a post of mine and none of them put anything in the tags how am i supposed to know what yall are thinking? do you love me? are you laughing at me? i guess ill never know because yall dont tag anything
Okay so I had a thought (I don’t know if someone’s done it before but hey)
what if Annabeth got swapped instead of Percy in Heroes of Olympus.
I think it would’ve been really interesting to see Annabeth, who is generally untrusting of new people, try to fit in when she arrives at New Rome.
Also, it fits because Hera really hates Annabeth, so uprooting her life would be like the ultimate punishment.
The roman demigods would all be doubtful and stigmatise her due to her godly parent, like what they did to Percy slightly but worse, because the Romans (Octavian) don’t believe Minerva should have children.
“daughter of Minerva, definitely cohort five”
Octavian makes little digs at her constantly, but she is Annabeth so she doesn’t take any his shit, and makes sure get him back during war games.
Instead of using water in the war games she would help Frank plan their tactics and kick everyone asses with amazing fighting skills. If they thought Percy was impulsive with his technique wait until they see annabeth.
I feel like hazel would look up to her as an older sister (maybe ask for advice on fighting, Annabeth would tell her of course but she’s amazing and doesn’t actual need the help), Frank would respect her a lot (like the mark of athena amplified) and would be in awe of her battle planning skills maybe even envious.
Annabeth would constantly reassure him that he’s very good himself, and each time she says it he’d feel slightly better.
Okay here is where it gets gay Reyna has an implied crush on Percy (that, lets be honest, is down to compulsory heterosexuality and I just read it as desperate for help?).
and Percy is 100% type person who you can rely on.
Annabeth though, Reyna would be dazed by her, like she’d feel so star struck by her when watching the way she holds herself in battle (and her muscles, come on, especially ABS)
when they are about to leave for their quest, where they probably use trains or something reminiscent of the lighting thief, Reyna pulls her aside and reaches out to her.
Annabeth would take a while to clock on that she wants a relationship, then she’d probably feel guilty because she wants to help her, but she remembers hints of a boyfriend who she seems to like a lot.
Embarrassed, she’d change the subject immediately.
Then a month later, she’ll meet Rachel and live happily ever after.
When Annabeth, Frank and Hazel return from the quest, she’d fight the giant for Athena (I forgot the name) and do a similar thing to Percy I guess but Annabethied.
I feel she’d use talking as a diversion and maybe have a plan before starting the fight?
Reyna hugs her after, but pulls away fast coughing and blushing.
Bonus: pipercy and jercy bonding at Camp Half-Blood
I got a question from someone who wishes to remain anon (sorry, I know it’s a nice feature for some of you, but to me it’s nothing but a source of harassment. Sorry.) regarding Hunger Pangs so here we go:
Hi mom! I’ve got a random question about Hunger Pangs but please dont feel like you need to respond if you dont have the spoons. I’ve been reading through your meta tags and I love love LOVE what youre doing and I know you have said that Vlad suffers from depression (I think?) but I was wondering: do you mind if people headcanon him as autistic? A lot of the things you write about him I recognize in myself and it’d mean a lot to have a character in a book from an author I like be like me. Sorry if this is weird. I just thought I’d ask ^^; I’m looking forward to the book regardless I guess I just wanted to know your opinion on how you feel about people headcanoning your work. Thank you in advance, and also if you publish this could you make it anon, ty <3
Hello anon, thank you for the wonderful message. I’m glad you’re looking forward to Hunger Pangs, I am hoping everyone will love reading it as much as I have writing it.
And to answer your question simply: you can headcanon whatever the hell you want. He’s definitely neurodivergent, his mental health is based somewhat on my own (as is his sarcasm, if you couldn’t tell), he’s the victim of hundreds of years of gaslighting and a few other things I can’t talk about without giving away plot, but he’s definitely not neurotupical. But if Vlad is autistic to you, then he’s whatever you want him to be, and that’s all that matters.
If you want him to be non-binary, he’s non binary. If you want him to be trans, he’s trans. I’m not going to stop anyone from headcanoning my characters into whatever works best for them.
Nathan is often described in what could be seen as very cis masculine terms, but if you headcanon him as trans—more power to you friend, have at it. If you want Ursula to be something more than what I’ve presented her as, go for it. I’m here 100% for your headcanons and interpretations of them if they provide something you need.
I’ve tried to make the book as diverse as possible, but with this being my first novel I will undoubtedly fall short of a few things, and I can only apologize and promise I’ll continue to do better as we go along. I will say this though, hardly anyone in the book is what I’d define as neurotypical (or able bodied for that matter). High functioning maybe, but when I said I wanted to write a story for me and people like me, I didn’t just mean that in regards to sexuality.
Anyway, I hope that answers your question. Take care and have a wonderful night :)
