i feel like this captures the emotion more

anonymous asked:

who's your top ten fave poets on tumblr at the moment? is it cool if i ask that? :) i wanna find more poets!!!

  • @barneswilson -Nathanial’s words are literally just, heartstopping, sometimes I’m just, I feel like I need my inhaler but it’s not an attack it’s just so much emotion my lungs ache from it.

  • @borrowedgods - Zach is just, his words are sort of like scar tissue over an open wound? I want to bleed, but I’m already healing.

  • @driftlight - Hannah is, well, there aren’t words for the sun Hannah manages to capture, not really.

  • @blurrifies - Anna is just, one of the best, hands down. Every single word is just a punch to the gut, to the heart, to every vulnerable organ.

  • @teddybluesclues -Lexi strings words together like fireflies in the night, I don’t really understand how, but she does and every line leaves me craving for something in me that I didn’t realize was still hollow.

  • @dvoyd - like a toothache for my soul, his words just devastate me with how much they are.

  • @fireandsteelofangels -Abby is ridiculously talented? Like, holy fuck.

  • @poetbitesback Could send the rest of my life reading Olivia’s words and literally never get tired of them. Ever.

  • @onthejellicoeroad - There’s something to be said for writing as if it’s the only thing you have ever done and the last thing you will ever do. Rika embraces that, fully.

  • @steebucks - I envy the gift you have, ahnika.

I hate doing this, most times, because I feel like I’m so often tagged in so much beautiful poetry I am always, undoubtedly leaving someone out. But, these wonderful, brilliant writers deserve to be recognized for their unspeakable talent. But if you’d like more poets, check out my blog under the tag, words.

anonymous asked:

Can you rec any stories?

Oh boy. You better strap in, because I have read a lot of fics. Most of these will probably be Dick Grayson centric, though, so just a fair warning. I’ve seen a couple people format fic recs like this, and I really like it. I hope it’s organized enough!

Of course, you can always go through my fic recs tag, too!

The Bonds that Tie by DawnsEternalLight
Words: 59,507 (between 2 fics)
Summary: A series exploring the Batfamily growing closer together.
My Comments: Absolutely amazing and heart wrenching. The first fic in this series is finished, which is a lot more about Dick and Damian’s relationship, but the second is still ongoing, which is more about Jason and Tim. It’s a wonderful series!

To Pass Through This Night by DawnsEternalLight
Words: 4,147
Summary: When Dick was captured by the Syndicate he died, for a short period of time, but he still died. It’s a fact he kept from his closest friends and family to protect them. When Damian and Tim find out he has to face not only them, but the emotions he’s buried from the event.
My Comments: It’s a forever evil fic. Like, you don’t even know how much I love this, especially because it involves the whole family’s feelings, not just Dick’s.

Even When You’re Down by DawnsEternalLight
Words: 4,628
Summary: Jason is expecting pizza at his door, not a very sick Dick Grayson. When he can’t figure out what’s wrong with his brother he turns to the only person he can, Bruce.
My Comments: Ahhh I love sickfics so much, and this one did not disappoint! Jason and Bruce coming together to care for Dick was amazing to read! To be honest, @preciousthingsareprecious‘s fics are all amazing, and I’ve read so many of Dawn’s works. These are just my absolute favorites!

Stubborn by audreycritter
Words: 20,359 (4/4)
Summary: Dick is usually the one taking care of everyone else and he’s bad at asking for help.So bad, in fact, that he never even actually asks– but Jason shows up anyway. And then Dick returns the favor. And then they both do for Tim. And it’s just going to keep going from there. It’s probably Alfred’s fault. When your butler mom calls and says, “Go check on your brother,” you don’t argue. You just do it.
My Comments: The first chapter absolutely killed me. It’s a sickfic, with each chapter focusing on a different batkid. It’s so well written, and it’s one of my all time favorites!

The Mechanics of a Hug by incogneat-oh
Words: 4,154
Summary: “So,” Tim ventures. “It's… what, a cuddle pollen?” Bruce just shrugs. “Something like that.”
My Comments: It’s funny, it’s angsty, the dialogue is absolutely amazing, and I would recommend this author’s fics (all of them, really) a thousand times over. This one is just my absolute favorite that I’ve read a bajillion times.

World’s Apart by Fernandidilly_yo
Words: 37,169 (3/?)
Summary: Dick’s world is falling apart. With all the heroes and Batman gone, the teen thinks this is the end, that is until Dick miraculously end up in an Alternet Universe where the world is whole and there’s a family waiting for him.
My Comments: This is an AU that absolutely BREAKS MY HEART. There’s so much description and it’s such an amazing story. It has a lot of potential, and besides the occasional typos/spelling errors, it’s probably one of the best I’ve ever read. I’m looking forward to more!

Locked Away by AutumnHobbit
Words: 3,021
Summary: anonymous asked: would you consider writing dick being asked to empty jasons locker at school after jason dies?

“Uh, Wayne residence,” he said, cringing after the fact at how hoarse his voice sounded. He scrubbed a hand over his eyes in frustration.
“Um, hello. Is, um….” the female voice trailed off hesitantly. “Is Mr. Wayne available at the moment?”
“I’m afraid not,” Dick said, trying harder to channel his inner Alfred. “Can I take a message?”
“…Yes,” the woman said. “It’s….well, it pertains to his son, Jason.”
My Comments: THIS IS SO SAD. I still love it, because it shows a side of Dick that we don’t see often. We see Dick happy around his family, angry, frantic, but never this grieving boy mourning the loss of a brother, and it’s heartbreaking. There are a lot more quality fics by this author, as well.

there is a design, an alignment by irnan
Words: 584
Summary: Dick’s just had brain surgery. No wonder it hurts.
My Comments: This is so sweet. But, of course, Bruce can only seem to show affection to his kids when they’re hurt or unconscious.

exactly how this grace thing works by irnan
Words: 22,710
Summary: Dick gets de-aged. You’d think this would be a routine thing.
My Comments: Honestly, this is the fic that convinced me to stay in the fandom. It’s the fic that I will always aspire to write, quality wise. It’s an amazing piece about a de-aged Dick learning to accept the family that’s suddenly thrust onto him, and his family, in turn, learn things about him that they didn’t know before. The whole fic is amazing.

Who We Were by ZiZzy
Words: 105,025 (33/?)
Summary: When the Graysons fell their son went to his great-uncle to be trained as a Talon. Four years later he is rescued and taken to live at Wayne Manor. But, he is not the talkative boy he once was, in fact talking at all is a bit of a problem… A series of connected oneshots about how the Batfamily is formed when the older brother is not quite who he was meant to be.The timeline of each chapter is in the A/Ns.
My Comments: It’s a little hard to get used to this fic, since most of them are read like one-shots in the same AU, but this fic destroyed me. Dick is so adorable, and he’s going through so much, and Bruce is so understanding. The last couple of chapters had me in tears.

Half Lost, Half Found by takadainmate
Words: 23,632 (4/5)
Summary: Driven underground, Batman fights to keep Nightwing alive. There is a fight. There’s always a fight.
My Comments: I always recommend this story, but it’s amazing. There’s a lot of tension between Dick and Bruce, but they have to work together in order to survive. Sadly, this fic hasn’t been updated since 2013, but it’s only the last chapter that’s missing. It’s still a great story, even without it.

Family is a Crisis by Lysical
Words: 4,172
Summary: In their family there’s always some sort of crisis going on.
“Probably a fashion crisis,” Jason muttered. “He probably dragged us all here so he could show off some chartreuse and fuchsia monstrosity.” “You aren’t making a new costume again, are you?” Damian added, nose wrinkling. “I thought we all agreed you were staying away from colors.”
My Comments: This fic is hilarious.Seriously, as much as I wish Tim was in it, too, it is the perfect sequel to the one scene at the burger joint in Batman #16.

Grade School by KagSesshlove
Words: 100,098 (13 fics)
Summary: Imagine that Damian goes to a regular school full time. And has to do things that normal grade-schoolers have to do. This is his life now: pretending to be a normal 10 year old at school all for the sake of the public. But, honestly, the public would rather he not.
My Comments: When I first found this fic, I think I started screaming at @stepichu to read it, too, I was so excited. I think I actually read it twice in one week? Please read this entire series. It’s hilarious and serious and just plain amazing. Sometimes the characterizations are a little exaggerated, but I still love it. It totally adds to the story! And the best part is that it was just completed!

the man with guns for eyes by 8sword
Words: 22,056
Summary: “Don’t blame him, little D. He gave me a choice.” “He always makes it a choice,” Damian mutters. “If you’re the one who makes the decision, it’s your fault if it’s the wrong one.” (Dick comes back from the dead.)
My Comments: Hm. Okay, on the one hand I really like reading this fic, because the boys are all forced to talk to each other and try to work things out. On the other hand, sometimes this fic leaves me reeling. There’s a lot to get through in one sitting, and sometimes I have to break it up.

With Friends Like These by ChimaeraKitten
Words: 4141
Summary: How Artemis got to know both Dick Grayson and Robin before finding out they were the same person.
My Comments: This is a YJ fic, but it’s really good. Like, I didn’t know I needed Artemis getting to know Dick Grayson so badly until I read this. There are also some other really good fics by @chimaerakitten, but this one is one that I fell in love with.

Crowded Enough by CaraLee
Words: 18,744 (15/?)
Summary: An AU built off of the titular line from the pilot episodes of Young Justice. Dick Grayson comes home from the events at CADMUS to the enjoyment of his various siblings, friends, and sibling-like people. Now extended: One chapter per episode of the first season. Plus a few extras.
My Comments: I love this so much. Each chapter is gold.

Save You by ArsenicInYourPudding
Words: 6538 (4/4)
Summary: The three times Wally West made sure Dick Grayson lived to fight another day, and the one time he didn’t have to.
My Comments: Warnings for suicidal thoughts/actions. The bromance between Dick and Wally in this is amazing, and this fic got me through some tough times. The whole thing always has my crying by the end, no matter how many times I read it.

That’s just on ao3, and it’s getting really late, so I needed to shorten this a bit. I will say that you’re welcome to look through my bookmarks on ao3 and my story favs on ff.net if you’re looking for more. There are a lot of amazing fics out there that I didn’t mention. I probably will come back to update this sooner or later.

edit because I don’t know how I forgot these:

Interval of Shadow by CaramelMachete
Words: 41,403 (15/?)
Summary: Nightwing, Robin and Red Robin take on Clayface. Nightwing does not emerge unscathed. Is this the end of Nightwing’s career? How will the rest of family react? Will Dick recover, and what should he do if he can’t?
My Comments: My goodness, this fic is honest to god amazing. It shows the struggle Dick goes through and how his family scrambles to be there for him. The interactions between everyone is so spot on, and if you haven’t read this, read it. And then come scream at me or @caramelmachete about it.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by anon_nom_nom
Words: 3,614
Summary: Prompt from yj_anon_meme:
Okay, so I always thought that the reason DCAU Dick turned into such a bitter little thing was because he only ever had Batman, and sometimes Batgirl, but he never had his Titans or his Wally or anything. So I would like so see something where Robin is starting to show early warning signs of this, maybe just frustration after a really bad night on the job in Gotham with Batman, and him actually having his team there to help him deal with it.In which Robin has a bad night, discusses poetry, and gets a massage.
My Comments: This is a YJ fic that shows the struggle that Dick goes through as a partner of Batman, and I find it super realistic. It’s really fluffy with a hint of light angst, and all of the characters are spot on.

Fear by tristen84
Words: 18,622 (6/6)
Summary: While on a stake-out together, Robin and Kid Flash have a frightening run-in with Scarecrow. Dick-Wally friendship.
My Comments: Another YJ fic. If you want Wally and Dick bromance, like, this is the fic. It’s a really good story, too, and it shows just how much both Dick and Wally care for each other. It’s a good read.

I’m probably still forgetting some, but these are all amazing, too, and please check them out!

Shades of Red and Blue

I’m ruined by McHanzo, y’all. Sorry-not-sorry. Please enjoy these drabbles about a certain surly warrior and his lovestruck cowboy boyfriend (or future boyfriend, in some of these cases). Cut is for length, not for content.

Hanzo let out a deep, concentrated breath, dark brows knit over stormy eyes as he stood up to untie his obi, adding it to the growing pile between them that consisted of his bow, his quiver, both of his re-enforced boots, and his hair scarf. Jesse’s cheshire cat grin widened as he wiggled his socked toes, the only item of his between them being his boots, which now Hanzo was certain was because he let him win the first round.

“I do not appreciate being taken for a fool, Jesse McCree.”

“Aw, c’mon!” Jesse laughed, taking a sip from his glass of whiskey. “We ain’t gotta play much longer.”

Hanzo was unconvinced. “Is that so?”

“Yeah. Just…” He glanced around the table at the remaining pants and tunic that Hanzo wore. “Like two more hands. Maybe three. Never can tell with ya, darlin.’ I have been surprised bef– hey now!”

He just barely caught the empty teacup as it was hurled at his head.

Hey have you got any good kbtbb or her love in the force fan fictions to recommend that you like?

BOI do I have recs for you, anon!

Sadly though, I don’t really play HLITF, but I do have a bunch of recs for KBTBB! I had to dig through my archives from way back lmao. Eisuke’s my bias, so most of my recs are for him lmao this might as well be an Eisuke fic rec. I hope you don’t mind lol:

  • Ota reencountering MC years after she broke up with him while pregnant  (A N G S T) by @oasisofmyheart - A N G S T fucking g a l o r e . I used to dislike Ota a lot, but this fic convinced me otherwise. I love all of her works, but this one has a special place in my heart because it shows a different facet of Ota that the game never really explores. God, after I read this fic (and the succeeding parts), I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks, man. The writing, plot, characterization, hell, everything is A+. This is my favorite Ota fic of all time. Legit, I want to frame this fic above my bed, and Ota’s not even my main bias lmao
  • You’re Late (Fluff) by @zaizenakiyoshi - This is written in Eisuke’s perspective and I love it because the author shows just how in love Eisuke is with MC. God, like she even includes snippets into Eisuke’s insecurities and fears (which I love to see). I’m a sucker for his internal monologue, and this fic gives it justice.
  • The Shivers Down His Spine (Smut. And the good kind, too) by @unofficialvoltagestories - I don’t think it’s a stretch of me to say that a good number of fics in the KBTBB fandom are smut. Also, 90% of the time, Eisuke smut fics feature him as the dominant one in bed. This fic, however, shows Eisuke letting MC take control and it is g l o r i o u s (legit, there was a part where MC made him moan in pleasure, and I had to scream into my pillow because holy fuck). The fic is sexy, but not too raunchy. Romantic, but not too cheesy. In other words, the perfect balance of sexiness and sweetness in a smut fic. This is probably my favorite KBTBB smut fic to date.
  • Prompt #32 “I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified. (Angst) by @voltage-alternatives - Good god, this fic, man. Another thing I’m a sucker for: vulnerable Eisuke. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I think it’s rare to see fics that explore his vulnerability. This one got to me because it shows how Eisuke tries to keep his walls up around MC because he’s too afraid to love, but they ultimately fall when MC reassures him she won’t leave him my weakness
  • His Best Friend’s Sister  (Fluff) by @elletxt - Finally, a Soryu fic lmao. So aside from being the best Soryu fic I’ve ever read, this fic explores Soryu and Eisuke’s friendship (which, I think, is rarely touched upon in fics). It’s also refreshing to see how dedicated Eisuke is to his family (despite being hilariously childish about it). I mean, where else can you see Eisuke making Soryu dick-shaped omelets out of spite???
  • The Five Times Eisuke’s Daughter Broke His Heart  (ANGST, PAIN, SUFFERING) by @retrogradeus - This one just fucking killed me and burned my corpse to ashes. Eisuke being a father is a topic I love seeing in fics, and this portrayal is just heartbreaking because it shows Eisuke, despite not being the best parent, still trying his best for his daughter. The last line of the fic utterly destroyed me. I legit almost cried, and I’d like to think I have Balls of Steel lmao I guess not
  • You (Angst) by @valogirl - The angstiest group fic I’ve read to date. She perfectly captures each of the bidders’ emotions and feelings for MC. The fact that they all loved her in their own ways, even after her death, will always get to me. Plus the flower meanings she included made it 100x more painful :’)))
  • Hello, Daddy pt.1 | 2 (Fluff) by @chemistrythings - I read this one a long, long time ago, but I’ll never forget this one because Eisuke’s such a big dork here. Kudos to the author because she perfectly captures the childishly dorky side of his character without going OOC at all (which I think is really difficult to pull off). Also, props to her for making one of my favorite portrayals of MC.
  • Don’t Run Away (Horror- Warning: dark themes, gore, yandere) by @logiebo - THIS FIC MAN OH BOY. From time to time, I enjoy a good darkfic. I think I’ve said this before, but Eisuke’s character is so deliciously complex that it wouldn’t be completely far-fetched to see him as a yandere (if I’m being honest, I’ve considered writing a yandere fic for a while lmao). I mean, wow. This fic is intense, but intriguing.
  • I Am Afraid of the Light (ANGST AND ETERNAL PAIN) by @2bedroom-baddestbidderlove - Shit, man. Like, the way she set up the whole fic, with Eisuke silently pining for MC, only for the plot twist to kill me in the end—ouch. It’s a songfic, and the lyrics just twist the knife in my heart… god, man. Also, her writing style blows me away because it’s so wistful, yet so on point. I’m in love with her characterization of Eisuke.
  • Voice (F L U F F ) by @maidofstars - Ah, another thing I’m an absolute sucker for—sweet Eisuke. The fic is short and simple, but it perfectly captures the depth of his love for MC. Like, the whole idea of using voice as a metaphor for his feelings just shot me in the heart, man. God, I love this one so much.
  • Letter two hundred and sixteen (ANGST :’)))) by @bolt8826 - Since I’m an unapologetic sadist who likes seeing (and making) Eisuke suffer, this fic is up there with all my other favorites. I mentioned this a million times, but I love seeing fics from his perspective because they make him seem more real, you know? Also, seeing Eisuke regret his actions to MC is a fucking A+++ for me.

And there you have it! These fics are all A+++ in every department (writing, grammar, characterization, plot, tone), and that’s something considering how nitpicky I am when I read fics (legit, I have way too much pet peeves omg).

I can relate to American Idiot in a personal manner so much that for me it is impossible not to love this album. The stories, the characters, the emotions and the feelings, they are so overwhelming and so vividly captured. I hear my own dreams and demons in it and there’s even more to that. I could talk for hours and hours about how I love this great album yet at the same time I feel like I cannot even find a single word to describe what I feel. It makes me wanna laugh and cry and shout and meditate all at once. It shapes me, it changes me. Even though rationally I am well aware that not every person, not every one who love or has ever loved Green Day, has to love American Idiot, still sensationally I’m like, “How could anyone not love American Idiot?

Fan fic review/why you should read it: Short and spoiler free: Shades Of Purple by: RoseAnthem on Archive Of Our Own

so I thought I gotta do something with my blog so i’m gonna (try) to do fan fic reviews!!! maybe even just tv show reviews, we’ll see, so here we gooooo:

Au/Tags: high school au, modern day au, klance, klangst, langst, keith angst, Lance’s best bud’s Pidge and Hunk, gay Keith, bi Lance, Lance has a large fam, non accepting father towards Lance’s sexuality, running away, insecure Lance, big brother Lance, time jump at one point, angst with a happy ending

Summary: Lance and Keith have been messaging each other on a website called UniverseChat, anonymously, they grow close to each other and tell each other nearly everything. Lance goes by the username as: blu97 and Keith goes by: 1redrebel. Meanwhile IRL, Keith is the high school hot head who’s known for getting into fights constantly, Lance has one or two classes with him but stays the heck away. Lance hangs out with his best buddies Hunk and Pidge who are always there for him but, Lance doesn’t always feel like he can tell them as much as he vents to 1redrebel. They’re practically boyfriends but, stuff happens (I said I would keep it spoiler free so it’s about to get real bland) feelings hurt, tons of angst, support from the besties, and a happy ending.

Any Archive Warnings or mature scenes?: There is two ‘mature’ scenes, not like full blown smut, but if you’re young watch yourself. No Archive Warnings or ‘proceed’ message when you read it. It is rated ‘teenagers and up’ if you would like you can ask me and I’ll find the two chapters with the scenes in it.

My Input (general, positives, and negatives):

General: If you want klangst or langst or just angst in general read it. All around the author does an amazing job of capturing everyone’s emotions, so prepare for feels. There is no Allura or Couran, there is a small amount of Shiro, he’s not really in it more of just mentioned by Keith. It was torture at one point when the author took a break and didn’t update it for a while but they came back and finished it so yeah, it is completed so you don’t have to worry about waiting. It’s 19 chapters and they’re decently sized.

Positives: Like I said above, the author really captures everyone’s emotions and when Lance asks rashly at one point (like I said bland due to no spoilers) everyone else isn’t forgotten. Lance doesn’t forget them nor does Keith and their family and friends’ emotions are not left out and I think that’s easily forgotten. It’s real in the sense that once you do something there are consequences to your actions. I really enjoyed it and didn’t want it to end.

Negative: This is in no way an insult to RoseAnthem!! I respect them and am thankful they wrote this but I do have to mention one thing I was not 100% satisfied with, hence the I as in others might’ve been chill about it! Please RoseAnthem if you see this I am not trying to hate on you!! Okay: So there’s literally just one thing I didn’t like: the ending. Yes it was happy but it was a little rushed. There’s a time jump and then boom they make up and it’s over? It might’ve been weird to me just because the author did take a break and then finished it? Let me know what you think about the ending! If I do a spoiler review I’ll go into more details but, the ending was the only thing I wanted to talk about that I didn’t like.

Please let me know what you think! This is my first review plus it was spoiler free so I couldn’t go into details 100%. Let me know what you would like me to review: other fan fics, tv shows (including anime), movies, spoiler free or not? Let me know if you agree with my opinion on the ending and if you want me to do a full blown review that includes spoilers! Thank you so much if you’ve read this far!!

“Pomona honey!” Called Poppy out. “Urgent letter from Hogwarts for you!”

Pomona Pomfrey-Sprout smiled when she saw her wife standing in the door of their little cottage. After nearly forty years of marriage she was still very much in love with her. “Coming! I just have one more mandrake to plant!”

She made quick work of the last little bugger, then hurried off towards the house. It was probably Neville again, asking her for tips on how to handle his particularly nasty first year Ravenclaws, who always tried to corner him with complex questions about subjects more fitted for fifth years. It was a clever technique to disturb lessons and avoid homework.

“Here.” Poppy handed her a cup of tea, the letter and a morning kiss. “If it’s Neville again you should tell him to just floo in next time. I haven’t seen him in ages.”

“Will do, will do.” She opened the letter.

Dear Pomona,

I’m sorry to say that Malfoy has fallen ill. It’s nothing serious as far as I know, but he won’t be able to teach for a while. I persuaded Minerva to let Harry take care of him until he’s back on his feet, and I am now taking over the defence classes. I was hoping that you might be willing to replace me in herbology while I do so. It would be greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you soon,

Pomona smiled. “As much as I love to see you in just a bathrobe.” She pulled her wife into a hug that became a kiss. “I’m afraid we have to get going. Hogwarts needs us.”

“I hope those two will finally find each other now. Pomona used to grow Devil’s snare, a plant known for it’s slow pollination, but even they never took more than a year to get together.” Madam Pomfrey crossed her legs and took a sip of tea from the cup Neville had offered her. She had arrived ten minutes ago, and while Pomona had immediately left for the gardens, Poppy had stayed with Neville to catch up a bit.

“Did you just compare Malfoy and Harry with Devil’s Snare?” Asked Neville.

“Maybe…” Poppy took another sip of tea, using the cup to hide her smile. It was about time Harry found some happiness, and Malfoy wasn’t undeserving of it either after everything he’d done for the school.

“I think I’d best be off to the greenhouses now. You never know what those first years will do when faced with a new teacher, and my darling girl isn’t the youngest anymore.”

“I don’t think we have anything to fear in that department. I suspect even in her sleep she’d still be able to teach seventh year Ravenclaws.”

“I know…” Poppy sighed. “But back in the day I made her fall for me when I helped her with a tough class. I wouldn’t mind reliving that moment.” She smiled at the memory.

Neville laughed. “That’s actually really cute.”

“Yeah, Pomona and I are sometimes quite  sappy for each other.”

“You mean sapphic for each other?”

Poppy gave him a sharp, disapproving look. Neville threw his hands up in defence. “I wasn’t going to leave that perfect opportunity unused okay, you know me.”

Poppy rolled with her eyes and got ready to leave.

“I’ll see you during lunch!” Called Neville after her. He knew she secretly loved his puns, even though she would never admit it out loud.

“It’s okay. It’s going to be okay. I’m here, I’ll get you out of this mess. Don’t you go thinking that I won’t. You’re my friend now and I don’t fail my friends.” Harry was stroking Malfoy’s perfect blond hair. He knew the other man wasn’t listening to his ramblings, he’d fallen asleep some time ago, but Harry needed to say it for himself. Needed to believe it was true.

He actually had no idea how he was going to stop Lucius from retrialing except for marching into the ministry and straight up forcing the minister to refuse Draco’s dad his basic wizarding rights. Not that he had anything against that idea, but he knew Draco would never accept it.

He sighed, and pulled out his wand to sent a patronus to Minerva, telling her that he wasn’t able to teach his classes that day. He didn’t want to think about the consequences of the memory he used to conjure it. How he was getting Malfoy out of this mess was his top priority, not the reasons behind his desire to do so.

Harry tried to relax a bit, and tightened his arms around Malfoy. There was a certain calmth coming from his body pressing on top of him. His weight was somewhat reassuring.

While he stared at the ceiling, his thoughts drifted to that one sentence again. What kind of monster do you have to be, in order to make your own father hate you.

The words had shocked him. Apparently Malfoy blamed himself for what his dad was doing, like after all those years of hard work and good deeds he still somehow hadn’t been good enough. Like all of this was caused by him not trying his best instead of his father being a total shitbag.

Harry didn’t understand how Malfoy could still love his dad, how he could still care about his opinion after everything he’d done. But he also felt out off his debt, because he didn’t know what it was like to have a dad. He had no idea how Malfoy felt and for now he could do nothing more than hold him, tell him it wasn’t his fault, hoping that would somehow be enough.

But deep down he knew it wasn’t.

When the afternoon neared its second half Malfoy slowly started to wake up.

“Hey.” Harry greeted him with a warm smile. Malfoy groaned, and turned his head away.

“Please tell me I didn’t cry myself to sleep in your arms.” He whispered.

Harry tightened said arms around him. It was his way of saying that Malfoy shouldn’t get weird ideas like getting up, because Harry wasn’t letting him go. “You kind of did. But that’s okay. We all have our bad days.”

Malfoy let out a huge sigh. “Fuck.” He readjusted himself on top of Harry, a difficult task because Harry’s arms held him in a deadlock. “You know you can’t solve every problem in the world with a good hug right?”

“I know.” Answered Harry. “But I can try.”

Suddenly he got a broad smile on his face. “Hey Malfoy, you do realise you just called me a good hugger, right?”

“Did I say good?” Malfoy lifted his head from Harry’s chest. His eyes were still red from crying, but the despair that had reflected in them earlier was gone. “I meant terrible. You’re nearly murdering me in your arms, your shoulders are too bony, your…. Ugh.” Harry wrapped his arms around Malfoy even tighter, like he was trying to push all the air out of his lungs.

“What was it you were saying about my hugging qualities?”

Malfoy opened his mouth to answer, but could barely say a word because Harry cranked up his muscle power even more. “Great…” Malfoy gasped for breath. “Greatest hugger…”

“That’s what I thought.” And Harry loosened his grip.

Malfoy let his head rest on Harry’s chest. They lay silently in each other’s arms for a while before Malfoy spoke again. “I suppose there’s no chance…”

“No Malfoy, indeed there isn’t. I am not going to not talk about what happened.” Said Harry with a stubborn tone in his voice.

“But what? Malfoy we’ve worked together for two years now. I consider you to be my friend, no matter how weird that might sound. And friends don’t abandon each other when something like this happens, even if it’s not the easiest subject to talk about.”

Malfoy sighed, defeated, and rolled off of Harry. “Could we postpone talking about it then? I think it still has to sink in a bit.”

“Sounds reasonable.” Answered Harry, whose stomach grumbled loudly.

The sound made Malfoy’s eyes widen, and he pushed himself up to a sitting position. He looked worried. Even though it had been nearly two years since Harry had beaten his depression, his lack of appetite had never really left. Malfoy hadn’t really been lying when he complained about bony shoulders.

“Potter, have you eaten?” Harry was suddenly very busy studying the ceiling.

“You haven’t, have you?” Malfoy checked his watch. “Both breakfast and lunch?” Harry sat up as well now, but still refused to look at Malfoy.

“Dammit Potter. You were doing so well before.”

“But this was to blame on the circumstances!” Said Harry defensively.

“Circumstances my ass, any normal person would have called a house elf for some food.” Malfoy sounded more concerned that angry. Harry would have prefered him angry, he didn’t want anyone worrying about him. Especially not Malfoy, who shouldn’t have anything on his mind but his dad at the moment.

"You and I both know I’m not…”

“No, Potter. You are indeed not a normal person, you’re the boy who lived. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need food in order to stay that way.”

“You haven’t eaten either though.” Harry realised how weak his excuse was, and he cast his eyes down at the duvet. He knew he should have eaten but it had slipped his mind again, like it so often did.

“I was out cold, you were not. You can’t keep skipping meals like this Potter.” Harry slowly looked up, and Malfoy caught and held his gaze.

Malfoy’s eyes were no longer red from crying, instead they contained a spark. A fire.

Harry didn’t think he’d ever seen Malfoy like this before. The life in his grey eyes did something with him. It captured him. It calmed him down. It made him believe Malfoy would never not be there to remind him of the little things.

“You care.” The words were soft, surprised, filled with something Harry had never felt before.

“Of course I do.” Malfoy didn’t cave this time, though he felt more emotions rush through his veins now then he did that morning. Harry only now noticed Malfoy was holding his hand. “Of course I care.”

I really don’t know what to think of this…. I feel like I could have done better but I’ve started over 3 times already so clearly I can’t

but I hope to have come somewhat close to people’s expectations anyway

If you want me to write a part 3 soon then following me will help with that; I post a new piece every time I hit a memorable number of followers, for this piece that’s 350 (OMG that’s a lot!?)

The Upside of Unrequited

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

Short blurb: Molly has lived through unrequited love twenty-six times, because she can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful. Then a cute new girl enters her sister’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Cassie is a lovesick mess and has no time for Molly. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute friend named Will. He’s funny and nice, and if Molly can win him over, she’ll get a boyfriend and her twin back. There’s only one problem: Molly might be falling for an entirely different boy, her nerdy coworker Reid.

This is a book for anyone who’s ever felt left out — that’s how relatable Molly is. A lot of her self-consciousness comes from being all too aware of how people see fat girls, and this is a really important book in that way, but her feelings are also gut-wrenchingly relatable to everyone who’s ever felt left behind while everyone else just seems better at making friends, finding romance, being confident. At times it’s almost a sad book, because it really delves into how miserable that can make you feel.

But this isn’t a Sad Book™. Molly and the entire cast of characters are funny, vibrant people. Like with Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Unrequited features wonderfully fleshed out secondary characters. In fact, I think Becky Albertalli’s writing took a step up in this book. The cast of secondary characters is even more well-developed, the conversations between teenage characters feels even more realistic, and she captures a lot of emotion. The sister relationships, for example, are really nuanced and true.

One point I really want to focus on is the diversity in this book, especially with Molly’s moms, her lesbian sister Cassie and Cassie’s pansexual girlfriend Mina. You can absolutely tell that even if Molly’s straight, she’s grown up in a bubble where all this is average. And I don’t mean a fake bubble protecting her from what the world is actually is, I mean a little space in the world that her family has carved out for themselves. Yes, homophobia and everything still exists. It’s not a utopia. It’s just reality with a lot of warm, welcoming people, a reality that Molly knows includes trans and asexual and all kinds of queer people, and her mindset includes room for them from the beginning. There’s a community, is what I’m saying, and it’s safe in a realistic way. Being placed in the middle of it feels really good.

This whole book actually feels really good. And also sometimes really terrible, like I said, but you know what I mean. It’s funny and sweet and real, and you can bet I’m grabbing Leah on the Offbeat the moment it comes out.

Thoughts on Spider-man Homecoming

Warning: Contains MAJOR SPOILERS

So this is mostly gonna be me talking about what a good job Tom Holland did on this movie because HOLY CRAP great acting, my dude.

Let me start by saying that Tom does comedy brilliantly.  Highlights include the scene where he’s trying to stop the bank robbers and where he’s trapped in the warehouse with “Karen”.

But I think where he really shines is the emotional moments.  There’s that scene at the Washington Monument where he looks down and realizes “Oh yeah I could actually die” or where fit hits the shan at the ferry and he’s frantically trying to hold it together.

The third act is where he really shines though.

For starters, there’s that scene with the FREAKING PLOT TWIST THAT MY ASS WAS NOT PREPARED FOR. (If you’ve seen the movie you know what I’m talking about.)

And Tom did so good in that scene.  You can tell he’s just petrified the whole time.  By the time Michael Keaton’s character is giving him the Talk in the car, I was sweating in my seat right along with Peter.

And the scene where he’s under the rubble hit me like a ton of bricks.  I’m always calling for more male characters to show genuine emotion and let me tell you folks, I was not disappointed.  That’s gonna be one of those scenes that stays with me for a good long while.

Ultimately, I just think the movie (and Tom Holland) did a good job of capturing how teenager-hood feels.  Everything feels like a big deal, whether it’s saving the day or asking your crush out, and the movie conveyed that perfectly.  I really connected with Peter’s eagerness to help, frustration when he isn’t taken seriously, and panic when he finds himself in over his head.  Like, if ever there was an apt metaphor for growing up, it’s that.

Anyways, good movie, good acting, go check it out.

Chapter 3.

“Plan- we need a plan- and a good one…” Astrid repeated, pacing back and forth along the dirt wall with her head resting on her fingers, arm crossed. “Okay… think, Astrid, THINK.”

“I think this is why we let Hiccup do the thinking…” Snotlout whispered to Tuffnut, who nodded in agreement.

“Pacing always helps him to think! Why doesn’t it work for me?” Astrid said regretfully, falling back against the wall with a grunt. She sat for a moment, elbows resting on her knees as she stared at the floor in grief. “I just… I don’t know what to do…” She buried her face against her arms, letting out a deep shuddering sigh.

“Astrid, we need to think outside the box.” Fishlegs tried gently. “Maybe… we could attack from underground?”

“And how would we do that, Fishy? Just wrangle a Whispering Death?” Snotlout asked sarcastically, crossing his arms as he rolled his eyes.

“I don’t know! There’s got to be someway…”

“Well, one thing’s for sure. Those Fliers know what they’re doing, so we cannot attack from the sky, we’d be beat right away. We have to find a way to… distract…” Astrid lifted her head, eyes bright and a smile beginning to spread across her face. “Ah, yes! I know- why didn’t I think of that earlier?” She jumped to her feet and rushed across the tunnel, yanking out a wrinkled piece of parchment from Stormfly’s saddlebags. She huffed in annoyance and tossed the paper aside, instead bending down to grab a stick as she began to scratch out a rough outline of the Edge in the dirt.

“Okay, pay attention.” She said informatively. “We need a distraction- something to draw the Fliers away from the base. So here, one of us- more specifically I- will sneak into the base and find Hiccup, okay? The rest of you-” She drew a four circles out above the bay. “You four will be attacking and dodging and doing all you can to stay alive but useful.” She dropped the stick and stepped back in victory. “Boom, plan!”

Everyone stared in silence at her little map, until Ruffnut looked up slowly, eyes wide. “Wow.” She said in shock. “I'm…” She grinned and fist pumped, “I like it! Danger, explosion- do we hgave full permission to destroy the Edge? Has the day finally come!?”

Astrid sighed, “Minimal damage, Ruff.”

“Damage? Hear that Barf, Belch?” Tuffnut called gleefully.

Fishlegs tapped the stables, looking up inquisitively, “What about Toothless?”

Astrid frowned and rubbed her jaw, uncertain. “I’ll try and find him first- but I don’t know… I do know Hiccup won’t leave without him, so I suppose we’ll have to scour the Edge before we retreat. Try and hold off the Fliers as long as possible.”

“I don’t like this plan.” Snotlout mumbled with a dark frown. “We’re constantly left in danger, while you and Hiccup go off to be the heroes- glory hogs.”

Fishlegs glared at him, “They are betrothed, Snotlout.” He hissed under his breath, probably trying to do so Astrid didn’t hear, yet she did regardless. She smiled softly, absently touching her shirt where the pendant rested beneath.

“So? I’m sick of all the gushiness- raise your hands if you’re with me!”

No hands follow his to the air, to which Snotlout let out a sputter and stomped away, saying something about getting his battle armor.

“Oh brother.” Astrid rolled her eyes, gaze landing on Stormfly’s saddle. She went to the dragon, giving her a little rub on her snout in comfort. “Stormfly will be up in the sky with you guys, but once I give the signal-”

“Signal?” Tuffnut asked, tilting his head.

“I’ll do a Nadder call.” Astrid informed. “She’ll come down to pick us up, and… depending on how everything goes… well, in short, we’re playing a lot of this by ear. Which I’m not the biggest fan of, but we don’t have enough time to give it a full think out…” Astrid whispered the last part under her breath, hoping the others didn’t here. She flipped the saddle off of Stormfly’s back, rubbing the dragon tenderly as she handed her another piece of fish to distract her from Chicken, who was strutting about as though she owned the place.

“So, when are we doing this whole death trap?” Snotlout asked.

“Dusk.” Astrid replied firmly. “More cover of night, it’ll be harder for me to be seen, easier to move around. You guys will also have more cover then.”

Fishlegs squeaked nervously, fingers tapping, “That’s a long time, Astrid… you sure…”

“It’s not what my heart wants.” Astrid replied with a sigh, hands coming to a still against Stormfly’s side. “But I know it’s the most battle smart.”

“But we have no idea what Krogan is like- he could be just another talk-about-being-enemies-over-a-good-game-and-a-cup-of-tea, or, he could be the treacherous kind who likes violence as a type of lip looser.” Snotlout pointed out, and for a moment Astrid almost thought he was concerned about his cousin. She was quickly corrected, “I mean, I am not getting captured by this dude if that’s the case- I like to know a bit more about my enemies before I’m their prisoner, you know?”

She glared at him, fists clenching. “I’m more worried about Hiccup right now, Snotlout, because you hold a good point. We don’t know what Krogan’s like, he could do literally anything- and we wouldn’t see it coming. That’s why we need to be prepared for whatever it is they throw at us.”

“What about Hiccup?” Fishlegs asked quietly, eyes lowered and tone gentle.

Do you have any tips for improving writing skill? Your work has always drawn me in in a way few other authors have! <3

First of all: Thank you so much!  This is super sweet.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while.  It’s honestly easier to talk about a specific aspect of writing rather than as a concept, but my main advice is this:

Finish stuff.  End the story.  Post it, preferably.

For a long time I didn’t write.  I would have an idea, and I’d start a doc, and I’d get a page or two done, then I’d put it aside and forget about it.  Because it’s not the exact picture you have in your head, and something about the words aren’t right.  It’s the order of the flow or some other word that sounds good but basically means it doesn’t work and you can’t figure out why.

Write anyway.  Write daily, if you can.  Get in the habit.  Because there’s only one thing harder than getting started, and that’s the middle.  When the conclusion you have is so far away and you’ve already put in hours of work that you’re not sure you even like at all.

But finishing something is worth way more points than having something started that you’re wary of continuing.  And starting is worth way more than having the perfect, unreal picture in your head.

The second thing I would tell you is to mine what you have.

Want to capture an emotion or a scenario?  Think of when you were experiencing something that’s a shade of it and describe the feeling.  If the character is scared, think about how you feel when you spot something out of the corner of your eye and your skin tries to jump off.  Or the creeping feeling of dread in your throat when you look into a dark hallway and think what if?

You will probably never experience the exact sensations your characters are.  But the physical sensation of emotions is universal.  Your audience will feel it if they can identify with it.

The other side of this is prose.  Take your favorite book, for example.  Open it up, and dissect it.  Find that passage you like and figure out why it works.  Is it the snappy writing?  Is it a build up of a wham moment?  What elements went into this that made it work for you?  Do you know someone else who’s read that book?  Did it affect them the same way?

Any art is about standing on the shoulders of those who inspired you, and climbing up there using your own experiences.

The rest is up to you.

And that’s all I got for a general overview.  I know ‘write more and read more and also pay attention to ur feelings’ is really generic advice, so if you’re looking for more of a mechanical breakdown, feel free to ask.

Vanderbabe please just like gush about everything but uh hmmm how would romancing Jumin work out in this au?

✿ Ok so, to give a little backstory on how things start…

You are a profoundly busy college student juggling both school and work, so you haven’t had time to try Mystic Message Online, though you’ve heard your friend from school gushing about it basically non-stop since you met him. Said friend’s birthday is coming up though, and he’s ALWAYS wanted you to play MMO, so you decide that… hey, why not pick up a copy, level up a character a little, and then surprise him on his special day by telling him your screen-name so you can play together? It’d make him happy, and said friend is pretty cute, anyway. You can take a little bit of a break from work to have fun with him.

You go to the store and, by sheer chance, are awarded a special, milestone, promotional code that will give you a number of rare items, along with a fully leveled character to try the game out with. Sounds great, right? You get home, launch the game, put on the special VR headset that makes everything feel so real, and put in you code.

after a flash of light, something weird happens.

You find that you’re logged into a max-level character with an inventory full of strange items, including a peculiar letter that you open up and read. All it says, in a loopy, elegant script, is you are the key that will unlock this world, and it promptly vanishes after you’ve read it, dissolving into particles that are carried off by the wind.

You don’t have much time to think about that, though, because you are IMMEDIATELY besieged by messages in the guild chat, one of them being from Jumin Han.

Ok, so everyone is weirded the HELL out. Rika has just logged on, which is impossible, because RIka is dead. A volley of accusations are thrown at you, including that you’re a hacker. You’re baffled, having little idea how to use the mechanics and controls of this game, and after a little bit it becomes clear that you are just as confused as everyone else and suspicion drops off of you.

Everyone offers to help you get oriented, but it’s Jumin whose help you accept, because he’s been the most calm and knowledgeable about the whole affair. Jumin gives you an exactingly thorough tutorial, going over how to use Rika’s character and how to play the game. He infodumps about literally EVERYTHING, from the outfit Rika is wearing to the monsters that you fight to try out their powers, and all the good options have you being like, “Oh, that’s really interesting!” and “You really know a lot about this!”

This learning process is interrupted by a panicked message over guild-chat. It’s been discovered that NO ONE CAN LOG OUT. Also, no one can access their admin controls, and despite everything that Seven has tried, he can’t contact the outside world in any capacity. No one can contact V, either, and the entire guild is turning to Jumin for guidance.

jumin does not know what to do. seeing Rika’s character model already hurts, and now everyone is trapped in the game that he helped create…?

It’s then that you tells everyone about the strange message you received, about you being the key.

After doing some digging and finding out this all started when you logged in, Jumin takes this to mean that you’re the key to getting everyone out. There must be something hidden within the game, and Jumin seems to have some idea of what it is, though he doesn’t really want to tell everyone else. He starts taking you on a bunch of adventures, and that’s how his route really starts - you seeking the truth with Jumin.

Over his association with you, he really starts to see you as an intellectual partner. You’re interested about the things he’s interested in, you actually care about the game, and you have a lot of interesting suggestions and ideas that makes him think about things he thought he knew in an entirely fresh way. This is a game he helped build, after all. He didn’t do any of the programming or the art design, but he was heavily involved in the planning process. It’s taken on a life of its own now that there are  tons of people working on it, but at its core, he thought he knew everything about MMO.

But you make connections and observations that he’s never seen before, and he’s fascinated.

The general progression of the route has him learning to mesh with you, and then - once he realizes he’s in love - getting ultra, INCREDIBLY protective. He’s terrified of the idea of you dying (even though death doesn’t seem to be permanent, even when everyone can log out, there’s a growing realization that people are… losing something of themselves piece by piece when they die) and the idea of you leaving his sight turns his stomach to lead. He tries to confine you to the guild hall, which you are not cool with, for many, many reasons. Among them though is one simple, undeniable fact.

Jumin isn’t going to solve this alone. He needs your help. And you are partners. What’s the point of being partners if you’re not going to travel together?

You get through to Jumin after some struggle, and you enter into a more mutual relationship as equals.

Some events that happen on the route -

  • You and Jumin enter a wooded, floral area, where Elizabeth the III ends up finding a patch of cat-nip. The two of you take a break to let her enjoy herself, and you see Jumin being unusually happy and playful as he takes pictures of his precious familiar.
  • Jumin talks about one of the events that happens near the new year, with special fireworks that represent the blooming hopes of the coming year. You say that you wish you could see it, because you think it’d be beautiful, and Jumin uses his magic to create things like fireworks in the night sky.
  • You enter an old, abandoned library with Jumin, and upon reading one of the books, you point out that the story reminds you of a book you read as a kid. Jumin had never read the book you’re talking about, so he had no idea, but you use that knowledge to solve a puzzle and reveal a new clue, and Jumin is incredibly impressed.
  • Throughout your time there, people keep treating you like you ARE RIKA. You confide this to Jumin, who understands - he’s used to being treated well due to his position rather than his personality. He assures you that he thinks of you as you, not Rika, though it was a bit hard for him to accept at first. He talks about how he felt when he died, and how glad he is to have you as a friend, now. You’re very clever, very brave, and in the end, you’re really nothing like her. Together, you go to a place to customize character appearances, and he helps you pick out a new look for your avatar to help distinguish you from Rika.
  • One night, you and Jumin stay up very, very late researching and coming up with ideas about the next stage of the quest you’re on. Jumin hasn’t gotten much sleep lately though, and he falls asleep with his head on your lap. You let him get some rest… he deserves it.
  • The Mint Eye cult develops a very particular interest in you, and one day, Unknown tries to capture you. Jumin exhausts himself trying to get you back. when he does, he hugs you with an unusual amount of emotion… and confesses that he’d almost forgotten what it was like to want to protect something that isn’t made of pixels.

I don’t want to make this too long, but feel free to ask for more events about specific characters! i have an endless number of ideas about this.

anonymous asked:

Is your passion for whump centred only on men, or are you open to whump of all genders?

I prefer men as whumpees, though there are exceptions. The reasons for this are complex, but in general, I like whump both because I like the emotions that come with whump and because I’m a sadomasochist. The latter is pretty equal-opportunity, but with the first… okay. Bear with me, ramble coming.

There’s a certain societal idea that men can only be emotionally open (openly sad, caring, or scared) if they have a really good reason. Like, you can’t cry at a sad movie, but you get a pass if you cry because your dog died. You can’t be scared of spiders, but being scared of a bullet coming at you is just common sense. Don’t show too much affection, especially not for other men (because that’s gay), but if your buddy is injured, okay, now you can be caring. And the fewer and more extreme legit reasons reasons you have (“I’m not scared of torture, but torture my wife and suddenly I’m scared”), the more manly you are.

Women generally don’t have that problem. We have a different problem, where it’s assumed that our emotions don’t have reasons - we’re just “more emotional” in general, so we must just be emotional all the time for no good reason. This makes it easier to dismiss a woman’s legitimate thoughts and feelings as being a product of her pesky emotionalness, rather than of actual problems she might be having.

One of the reasons I like whump because it forces male characters to be emotional in a way that they can’t be in other contexts. Even romances don’t really capture it in the way I’m thinking of. And this is true both when the whumpee is a man and when the carer is a man.

It’s extremely rare to have that kind of emotional scene and have it involve women. If it’s a woman caring for the guy, well, that’s just what she’s supposed to do, because women are endless wellsprings of caring. And if it’s a woman getting injured, well, first off she’s probably not going to get hugely injured, and even if she is, it’s less extreme.

One really good subversion of this, by the way? Mad Max: Fury Road.

Look at how Furiosa is actually injured instead of just being attractively bruised. Look at how everyone is worried about her and focused on her. Look at how Max is being caring and choosing to divulge something incredibly personal to him–his name–in order to bond with Furiosa. He gives her his blood.

(have i mentioned how much i love mad max fury road because yeah)

First Thoughts on the Anastasia Broadway Cast Album

So I grew up watching Don Bluth’s Anastasia, like a lot of people, and it’s now definitely one of my favourite movies of all time. I’m also a huge theatre geek, so when I first heard whispers about an Anastasia broadway musical, I was VERY excited. Sadly, I haven’t watched the show because I live in Manchester, England (I read the plot online and I am VERY disappointed that Rasputin isn’t the antagonist), but I pre-ordered the cast recording asap (I don’t think it has every single song on it, though) and they’ve recently released it onto soundcloud here  and I have opinions that I want to share lmao. Also, these are just my FIRST thoughts, after hearing the album ONCE - in my experience, I tend to grow more attached to songs the more I listen to them, so these definitely aren’t my final opinions on this soundtrack.

Prologue / Once Upon A December - This very first song actually made me cry because of the nostalgia XD and also Mary Beth Peil has an AMAZING voice.

A Rumor In St. Petersburg - I also really like this song, including the additions they made to it. Not much else to say really.

In My Dreams - I got chills listening to this song; it’s so beautiful, I can’t wait to learn it.

Learn To Do It - Admittedly, I personally prefer the faster pace and more upbeat original version of this song, however this new version saved itself with the part where Anya flips her shit and has a go at the boys. Amazing.

The Neva Flows - So this is the antagonist’s (Gleb) first song, and uh…it’s pretty good, I guess, especially during the crescendo. They’re definitely trying to create a more humane “villain”, showing how he’s been affected by what he witnessed as a child. Still would’ve preferred In the Dark of the Night, though…

My Petersburg - I like the energy of the song, very upbeat, I love the ending buildup. And I’ve always loved how adaptations of films delve deeper into the characters’ backstories a bit (like Shrek the Musical)

Once Upon A December - Beautiful. I’ll probably always prefer the original, due to nostalgia, but Christy Altomare did a really good job capturing Anya’s emotions in this more vulnerable moment. They were right to not mess with this song too much.

Stay, I Pray You - I have no idea who tf Count Ipolitov is but this is a very emotional choral song, and has a beautifully melancholic melody. I love how Anastasia ends it.

We’ll Go From There - Awh, this song is so cute! I’m glad they gave Vlad (ha that rhymes) a song about Sophie- sorry, I mean Lily. Nevermind all three of the gang are singing it….I like it! It’s a good, quick way to show their feelings (which are mainly anxiety) at this point.

Still - Um why the fuck is Gleb in love with Anya. I HATE that. Haven’t they met, like, twice at this point? I’ve only read the wikipedia page for the plot so maybe I’m wrong. But still….fuck this subplot. So yeah this song is ok I guess, I think I’m just too stubborn about my dislike for the changed story lmao. I also quite like the whole….idea? of this song, how it ends with “but still…” like, it doesn’t need t explain what comes after the “still”, it just needs to show his hesitation/inner conflict.

Journey To The Past - I’m not bothered by the fact that they moved this song to this point in the story, it still fits well actually, and like with OUAD, they smartly didn’t change it much. And like with OUAD, I’ll always prefer the original, but this version is also amazing.

Paris Holds The Key (To Your Heart) - It’s a great chorus number, and definitely a good one to start off act 2 with. Again, I prefer the original, although I like how Anastasia has a solo in this one too.

Crossing A Bridge - I love this song, tbh I’ve realised I think I just love any added Anya moment now lmao. I’d love to see this live, to see the image of her on the bridge singing this.

Closing/Close The Door - (the wikipedia says “Closing” and the soundcloud name says “Close”). Like the Anya moments, I will lap up ANY added Dowager Empress moments, too! Her tired, hopeless emotions were shown a little bit in the original film, but I love how this explores them further. So low-spirited and heart-wrenching.

Land of Yesterday - Another thing this musical explores more in-depth is Russia in general, the state of it, its people, and this song is really cool. Lily’s voice is amazing!!!! (Caroline O’Connor)

The Countess and the Common Man - Awh Vlad and Lily have a love duet!! Fuck yeah! This is what I signed up for!! It’s funny, flirty, and all-round lovely.

In a Crowd of Thousands - I don’t mind that the story of how Dmitry and Anya’s pasts were linked has changed, because the new one they made up is presented so beautifully in this song. I absolutely LOVE Altomare’s voice in this, possibly more than in the other songs, and omg when she realises!! When she realises!! You’re like oh shit ! It’s her and they both know it now!! It’s also a nice development to Anya and Dmitry’s relationship.

Meant to Be - This was also in the original film, and I think it’s done wonderfully here. ‘Nuff said.

Quartet at the Ballet - The Swan Lake music gives me huge Barbie nostalgia! And then it blends so seamlessly in and out of the OUAD tune…ahh I love it. I like how it shows all these inner thoughts of these different characters, like We’ll Go From There. The ending with the overlapping solos is beautiful omg.

Everything to Win - This is a good song, but not one of my favourites or anything, it’s nice to see Dmitry’s conflict. The ending is sweet (or I guess bittersweet).

Once Upon A December (Reprise) - I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying!!!!

The Press Conference - Yet another good chorus number; I love the typewriter sound effects. And Vlad & Lily’s parts are quite funny (it’s funny when he spells out his name, for some reason. And her high notes at the end..DAMN GIRL). I’m slightly feeling like they’re being kind of lazy with the use of the OUAD tune, however.

Everything to Win (Reprise) - Nice!! Good! I like it!

Still / The Neva Flows (Reprise) - Can Gleb just shut the fuck up already. Yes, I’m still salty. (although admittedly this is a good song - I especially love Anya’s fierceness in it).

Finale - I’m not surprised they decided to end on Once Upon A December, and this is exactly what you’d expect from a musical finale, tbh.

In conclusion - I love the musical’s soundtrack, yet I’m still iffy on the whole villain thing. Feel free to reply or reblog with your own thoughts, it’ll be fun to discuss!

The past couple months I’ve done some betaing and editing for other people, and a lot on my own work as well, and it’s gotten me thinking about some of my process for writing. Since I just found a perfect example, I thought I’d take a moment and talk about the importance of specificity for strengthening tone and story telling.

I came across this sentence:

“I don’t know,” said Castiel, a bad feeling clenching tight about his chest.

In and of itself there’s nothing wrong with this sentence but one thing I’ve found is that vague language is bad. There’s a prevailing view, I’ve noticed, that using a big word when a small word will do is “bad” but my own experience and the way people react to my writing suggests otherwise - that using a big word that more accurately reflects what you wish to say is pretty much always better than using a small word that is more general. When I edit my own work a lot of what I do is find places where I’ve used vague language and replace that vague language with words that capture more of the emotional punch I’m trying to communicate. So, even though “a bad feeling clenching tight about his chest” isn’t, like, terrible, I went ahead and changed it to:

“I don’t know,” said Castiel, an ominous sense of impending doom clenched tight about his chest.

Wordier? Yes. A little melodramatic? Absolutely. But I think it more accurately captures what I was going for, and better communicates my intentions.

Which do ya’ll prefer?

anonymous asked:

what do you think about artist kanda (yullen)? headcanons or scenarios or just in general? i thought allen would be great as a muse/model. that personality. the unusual look, those smiles..

I’VE GOT A LOT OF THOUGHTS, thank you for asking

And actually two wip! One has Kanda bargaining with Allen to use him as model for an assignment and another started from a conversation with madeoficeandfire ages ago about jealous!Kanda, but in it they’re just roommates and Kanda happens to be an art major.

There’s also the kimi no na wa au where Kanda has art as a hobby, but mostly landscapes/studies of objects, not so much people. There’s actually several aus like that.

Sometimes I hesitate to give Kanda a focus on art since it feels like a cop-out on just having Tiedoll being an influence. The only hobby we actually know about is ‘gardening’ (though I can’t remember now where it was said…). Gardening and art share some similarities though! For one, being a mostly individual hobby that involves a lot of dedication, focus, and for the most part skill. It’s not really unreasonable to say Kanda wouldn’t draw, though there’s so much more variety to it than simple ‘drawing whatever’.

Portraits are always nice for shipping purposes, but I like the thought of Kanda favoring landscapes, or just black and white sketches, instead of color or people or fantasy. He might favor more abstract ideas, less concrete images and more emotion or general feeling.

BUT isn’t Allen just a bottle of emotions, stopper just barely containing it all? There’s something beautiful about someone so full of life, and capturing it just right, the sly twist of his smile, how at first glance he seems unassuming and naive, but when you really look at him, he’s full of lies and deceit, a special kind of mask meant not for the people who look at him, but for himself, foolishly thinking it might become real — idolizing it all on paper is a challenge Kanda is eager to rise to.

What started as an exercise to capture all the intricacies in Allen’s smile turns into a fierce battle to really crack that mask, to find the most real and honest expression Allen can have. How can Kanda draw that out? He’s not good with his words, and his temperament is as fragile as egg shells underfoot, but he never backs down from a challenge.

Countless drafts, portraits, color studies and smiling faces scratched over in rage with thick lines of charcoal. To look at them all, you’d say Kanda hates Allen, but its a thin line between hate, love, and obsession.

It was a simple assignment at first, and Kanda figured painting someone he hated was just as well, since painting someone he loved was impossible.

Allen didn’t really care what the end result was so long as Kanda paid him, but he can’t deny finding the countless torn drawings offensive. Still, it’s unnerving to be studied so closely. He’s lived half his life with people averting their eyes from his unseemly scars, to be broken down so shamelessly is almost discomforting. The longer Allen models, the more Kanda’s drawings turn from passable fascimiles of him to dedicated studies, capturing the downswept look of his eyes, the quirk in his smile, the almost unnoticeable dimple, even the indents of his scars, the exact rigid pattern on his grotesque arm.

Allen looks at these drawings and starts to see the ugliness he so desperately hides, and there’s nothing more intimate than being so wholly seen. Even if Kanda never really looks at him with passion in his eyes, Allen can feel it in the lines of his art.

Kanda has never drawn someone with so much of his own impassioned ideas, and Allen’s never been looked at so earnestly and honestly.

TLDR I love this trope no matter how abused it is

Snow, Flame, and Hurricanes

My fingers are tangled in her blonde locks. I wanted to twirl them but I needed more than just a small piece. I needed to place all my fingers through her conditioned hair.

She’s moving her thumbs faster over her keyboard her eyebrows arching in annoyance.

“What’s wrong Becca?”

“The pledges are acting out.”

I nod not knowing what to say. I really don’t have any advice for this situation, and she doesn’t need it. It doesn’t take her long before she has moved closer to my body, it fits perfectly against mine.

I’ve never fit so perfectly with someone. I’ve never ached to learn someone like I want to lean her. I’m addicted and it’s scary. Yet I’ve never felt so free. When I’m with her my heart doesn’t beat rapidly, but instead cools against her body. I always thought Becca would be hot to the touch that she’d burn, but when she held my hand for the first time I felt the cold.

It makes more sense now she looks like she could carry a fire inside of her. Except, when I look in her eyes I see snow floating down. I’m the flame and she’s the snow.

I wonder if she sees things like stars dancing in my own eyes? Her hair falls over, falling just enough to tickle her nose. Becca’s huffing air to try and remove the unwelcome strand.

I find myself moving it for her. My hand taking control I gently push it to the side. My hand took its time to remember the lines on her forehead.

I always wondered if I could memorize each outline. That if I closed my eyes could I build the woman in front of me? Could I remember every detail and place them exactly where they belong? I know, I could.

“What are you thinking about,” she asked moving her arm under her so her stature is slightly taller than mine. She does it without knowing. She has a lot quirks like that. Becca poked me on the cheek and I awoke from my daze.

“What?” I ask blushing because I already forgot what she had said to me.

“I asked what was going on in your head.”

I covered my cheeks with the palms of my hands dragging my fingers down from my eyes, trying to hide my blush. “Nothing important,” I reply it’s muffled by my hands.

“If it wasn’t important then you wouldn’t be off in space trying to find the answers to life.”

“What do you see in my eyes?”

She looks struck by my question and I wonder if I’ve scared her off. It’s not like we’ve been dating very long. It’s only been a little over a month.

She huffs in annoyance again. “Did you even hear me?”

“Is no an okay answer?”

“It’s not but we’ll talk about that later. I said that I see everything.” She mumbled the last part.

“This is dumb.”

“Come on Becca please explain it to me.”

“Fine, I guess. The first time I looked into your eyes was when I intentionally spilt my drink on you. Your eyes lowered in shock, but they didn’t fill with anger but instead they filled with resilience. You kept me there in your sight, it sent a chill down my spine. The night at the sorority when you kissed Kaitlyn your eyes danced around the room with excitement and love but you locked your eyes with mine and they were filled with a past I wanted to know. This is embarrassing.”

“Please keep going,” I was begging but I’d never admit that to her.

“When I saw you at the bar I knew I needed to understand that past so I stared deeper. I saw the pain, the anger, the fear, but I saw me. I saw my reflection in your eyes. When I drove you home the stars illuminated them, but you must have found me more gorgeous than the night sky. When it comes down to it when I look into them I see the entity of you. It’s not just emotions it’s what matters to you. That’s what fills them. I see me, and the way you feel for me. I see us, and the possibilities we have.”

She dipped her head to capture my lips and I felt the flood. The flood of emotions that were more like a hurricane. Becca was what I was searching for, I’m so glad I opened my eyes to her.

“Do you believe in soulmates,” she asked me clasping our hands, mine filled with a flame and hers cooling mine.

“I used to tell myself I didn’t. That the word soulmate was made up by Hollywood, but being here right now. I mean how could I not believe in the word. You’ve been in my life since day one, and we went from enemies to lovers. There was no in between because we aren’t meant to have an in between. We are meant to be more than just soulmates and the definition of love. We’re hurricanes. We’re both intense people, who have expectations on what we want. I know I want you, and I’ve never wanted someone like I want you. I didn’t fall gracefully into us I fell hard and fast. All it took was the snow in your eyes and I knew I melted. We aren’t perfect people, but I know your my imperfect, perfect person for me.”

She gives me one final kiss. It isn’t fierce it doesn’t have to be. It’s gentle and completes me. She’s the snow, I’m the flame, and together we’re a hurricane.

What's your thought on Saihara's Japanese voice actress, as she voice him? I heard it's her first time of voice male character. It's okay if you don't want to answer it.

I love, love, love Megumi Hayashibara, honestly. When I first heard she would be voicing Saihara I was very eager and expectant (and what’s more, I didn’t actually expect Saihara to live long so I thought I would only get to hear her voice for maybe a chapter or two at most).

Megumi Hayashibara is an A+ voice actress who has done tons of quality work before. It is in fact her first time voicing a male character, and I think she did a great job. According to interviews, she was actually the one giving advice and pointers on how to make Saihara sound more like a detective–and I think she really captured the uncertain, hesitant feeling that he’s supposed to have.

Her performance in each chapter was great, but in Chapter 6 in particular she was so raw and emotional as Saihara, it really touched me. She mentioned herself in an interview that she wanted to “show Saihara’s pain” and have him “bare his heart,” and I think she accomplished that fully with the Chapter 6 trial.

There’s honestly no one I would rather cast for Saihara’s voice, hearing how spectacularly Hayashibara performed. She worked so hard to really convey each and every emotion that she was supposed to, and I think she perfectly expressed what a sensitive, anxious, all-around good person Saihara is at his core, even when everything terrifies him so much.

Greg Chun always sounds like he's trying really hard to emote but has no idea what emotions actually feel like and I think that's beautiful

It works really well for Ike and Lukas especially. Lukas himself says he has a hard time emoting and feeling in his supports, and Ike is socially awkward and never really comfortable with a lot of the situations he’s put into. Greg Chun captures both of them well with that kind of performance.

His voice as Ephraim has more emotion in it than compared to his performances than Ike and Lukas (I’m fond of the “Alright, let’s fight!” quote). There is still a bit of that detachment though, which isn’t bad, it works well for Ephraim in calmer situations.

His voice just works really well for these characters.

it will come back; continued

SUMMARIZED: Huuuge warning here, babes.. This chapter basically reveals all about that so called pack that Isabelle’s a member of. Also, there’s maybe a smidge of a mention of implied violence against Isabelle here, had she stuck around and refused to be married off. Also, Mox shifts? And I tried to capture it as best as I could but I.. I tried. This chapter has been two days and one hell of an emotional rollercoaster in the making and honestly, the story feels like it’s really just beginning. So, yeah.. This pack is kinda brutal.
