anonymous asked:

How do you think Rey and Finn meet in the Star Wars Midwest AU that I'm obsessed with?

oh no everyone has to endure me talking about the midwest au I love this au it is unfortunate how much so now you have to listen

but

rey and finn meet at a gas station because everyone in the midwest meets in a liminal space (rural libraries, rest stops, high school footbal fields, places where the boundary between the real and the rest rubs away, this is how you meet the people you love, and that’s how rey and finn meet, in a shitty fucking gas station with awful coffee. She’s hitchhiking from the crappy aluminum-sided house with Han Solo, and he’s folded his shitty wheelchair (he hates the word, but he might as well get used to it) into the space between Poe’s gearshift and the back of the cab—

she’s not the kind of girl he would have considered before, painful-thin and uncertain, as though the space she takes up is borrowed; he’s not the kind of man she’s seen (she hasn’t seen many people at all but not him) stubbornly independent, burning, overeager, nothing hidden or sad, just existing, despite it all and HFS too.

she moves into his house (Poe’s house, as Poe likes to remind them, but he’s grinning when he says it) within a few days of meeting him, spends more than her fair share of time time tinkering with his assistive technology and cutting down on his monthly DME requests to social security, and—

(the first time he kisses her, she isn’t thinking about that)
