Portfolio help: Applying for Architecture at a (UK) University, even if you’ve missed the grades.

So a lot of universities for architecture in the UK ask for AAA (A level grades) or similar (which is a bit unfair considering how many other skills you need to be a good architect, but there you go). This can be quite daunting when you are predicted lower, or already have lower, grades. The good thing is, most of these universities will ask for portfolios - you can use your portfolio to show your talent and still get accepted into these universities. I had a lot of help from lots of different people (architects, teachers, family and friends), so I have collected their tips and tricks, along with my own, to help you through this laborious process:

THINK OF THESE AS FLEXIBLE GUIDELINES, THIS IS NOT THE ‘BE ALL AND END ALL’. USE YOUR INITIATIVE :)

1. Time. Set aside quite a bit of time for your portfolios. Take things steady, and don’t rush. Most of the universities you apply to will have different portfolio criteria, which means creating several different portfolios. If you rush and skip out important parts, the examiners will be able to tell.

2. Quality. Put in work you’re happy with. Show off your strong points. Try not to weaken your portfolio by adding a page you’re not happy with. An examiner would rather see eight good pages, than twelve slighty above average ones. However, don’t worry about a perspective drawing looking slightly wrong or other minute details, the examiner is not going to penalise you for this.

3. Don’t try to be an architect. Leave out house designs, plans etc. You’re going to learn how to become an architect, they don’t want you trying to be one already. What they want to see is your potential.

4. Show variety! This is really important. Different mediums, different subjects, different processes, etc. They want to see a real mixture of what you can do (since whilst studying you will use a massive mixture of different art styles).

5. Good presentation. Personally, I think this is important. Work looks much better when displayed well, and therefore so will you. Use a nice font, and think how to present your images on the page. Have clear titles and captions.

6. Not just school work. Include your own work, done outside of the classroom (unless your artwork is really good and you can get away with it!). I wasn’t happy with the art I had done in school, so almost all of my portfolio contained work I had done in my own time (all around the time I had to submit portfolios). Also something to keep in mind - the work you do now will be better than the work you did a year ago (I wouldn’t recommend using GSCE work).

8. Page order. Not too important but something you will think about. Just think sensibly, make your work flow.

9. Ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask people for help, ideas or feedback. Feel free to message me for anything, I’d love to help! Another good thing is to try and find people’s portfolios to look at, and draw inspiration / take tips from them (not copy).

10. Have faith in yourself! Believe you can do it and then you can!!

Extra help on what you might want to include:

What examiners might like to see (based off what architects, teachers, tutors & universities have told me):

  • Life drawing - examiners might like to see one or two pieces, don’t worry about accuracy, it can be an interesting continuous line drawing. I recommend going to a few classes and choosing the best/most interesting.
  • Buildings / Perspective drawings - you will be drawing lots of buildings after all. Don’t flood your portfolio in them, but I would definitely recommend doing at least two, possibly one (again, stick with what you’re good at, it doesn’t need to be a traditional method of drawing).
  • Work experience - if you did some work experience at an architect’s office, and you made something (e.g. made a model, built a chair), put it in! Even if it’s not the best thing you’ve ever created, show your processes.
  • 3D work - To show your process and design thoughts. Doesn’t need to be anything amazing. For example, I used cardboard to create random connecting shapes and experimented with light and shadow, which I captured through photography.
  • Photography - I would definitely include some good and/or interesting photographs, preferably of something architecture related (although not necessary I guess). For example, a series of photographs of a particular building, or a series of something common among several buildings.
  • Your strengths. As I have mentioned before, show off! Show the examiners what you’re best at, how creative you are, what you will bring to the university.

Making portfolios is a long and stressful process, but definitely worth it. Even with good grades, if you’ve got a crap portfolio the examiner might be less inclined to give you an offer. I worked my arse off for my portfolios,  got 4/5 of my offers (the fifth didn’t ask for a portfolio), missed my needed grades by quite a bit but still got accepted into my first choice - hard work pays off!

How did you get good at 3d modeling? I've tried sometimes and it always came out wrong or I just couldn't do it.. Do you have any good tutorials you recommend?

All you need is practice, friend! I’m even struggling with certain parts to model, that’s why I usually do model practices, where I look at clothes, shoes and accessories and try to replicate them. I also practice making heads and other body parts before (or during) making a full model.

As for tutorials, I’ll link you to all the ones I’ve used or kept with me. I’ve made a few tutorials and am currently making a hair tutorial, so I’ll link you to that too!

So Geek Girl Con 17 was a blast!

Last week I finished Allura’s Crystal Venom outfit just in time on Friday before we hit the road to Seattle (thanks to fixing some unfortunate late night mistakes with screenprinting earlier in the week - lesson learned).

Con itself was thankfully drama free and so much fun. My friend, Grace, cosplayed for the first time as Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service - so proud of my fledgling cosplayer! We had a blast in artist’s alley, a 3D printing panel, the WOC meetup and the cosplay contest. Ran into quite a few old friends and made some new ones. And we even found time for a mini shoot outside of the convention - I’m working on the photos tonight and hope to post them soon.

All in all, it was awesome. I can’t wait to go back next year - hopefully for both days next time. :)

I don’t blame you. Despite recent entries in the franchise, Sonic remains one of gamings most beloved and recognizable characters among Mario and Pikachu. And yes, the very thought of a Sonic movie in 2014 may seem like the most cynical of all cash-grabs, but The Lego Movie taught us that cynical cash-grabs don’t have to be terrible.

I wish you would do a fic where Mulder unexpectedly comes over to Scully with flowers and food and makes her dinner

“Jesus Christ,” she sighs, pulling open her apartment door. “Did my mother call you?”

“She texted me, actually,” he says, sliding past her easily and dropping a kiss into her hair. For old time’s sake. Or whatever.

“Oh!” Scully raises her eyebrows. “Look at Mom.” Her nose is a little red, and her face is flushed like it always gets when she’s sick. But she is beautiful, in a gold-colored sweater that looks softer than her hair.

“Voila.” He presents her with the bouquet of flowers after a grandiose gesture and a clumsy bow.

“Mulder.” She begrudgingly takes them but he notices her trying not to smile.

“And…” He raises the reusable shopping bag to chest height. “… your favorite.”

“My favorite?” She gets a vase from above the sink and he pretends not to glance at her tattoo when her sweater rides up above the low-slung waistband of her yoga pants.

“The Mulder Omelette.” He sets the bag down on the countertop and starts to unpack.

“If it’s my favorite, why is it named after you?” she asks.

“Because it’s made by me, with tender loving care.” He pretends it doesn’t hurt to say, but it does. A little. Still.

“TLC, huh? Weren’t they the group who–”

He takes her hand suddenly and leads her in an awkward two-step, singing quietly, “Don’t go chasin’ waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to…”

Her thready alto picks up the melody, “I know that you’re gonna have it your way or nothing at all, but I think you’re moving too fast.”

“Somebody’s been practicing,” he praises, resting his chin on top of her head as they sway.

“Yes, if there’s one thing this stomach bug has given me, it’s time to hone my singing skills.”

“Don’t stop, it’s really paying off.”

“Thanks.” His vision pinholes and all he can see is her radiant smile as she says, “My single drops next week and the EP should be out by December.”

“Well that’s perfect, now I have a stocking stuffer for my interns.”

She chuckles against his chest and for a moment everything feels fuzzy around the edges, like an old, precious photograph. It is tempting to let it be that. It is tempting to turn her chin up with his thumb and run his tongue across her bottom lip, and say her name like it is everything. But he doesn’t need to anymore, he tells himself. They are in a good place.

“How about that omelette?” he asks, stepping away.

She nods and goes to blow her nose. He familiarizes himself with her kitchen, learning that she keeps her frying pans in a different place than she did when they were living together. He tries not to let it bother him. He heats up the pan, breaks the eggs. She sniffs behind him and he turns around to see her carrying two glasses of wine.

“With omelettes?” he asks, taking his.

“Wine goes with everything.”

He can’t argue with that. “Where’d you get these stemless glasses?”

“White elephant party at the hospital last year.” She crosses the kitchen and hoists herself up onto the counter across from the stove, looking over his shoulder as he cooks. He thinks she might still be humming “Waterfalls.”

“How’s work?” He hates that he has to ask it like some distant family member who only sees her once every three years. Mercifully, they see each other much more than that, but the fact that he doesn’t get daily updates anymore is… different.

She shrugs. “I applied for a grant to get a 3D printer for peds. Should hear back next week.”

“Let me know.”

“I will.” He flips the omelette in the pan just to show off. “They made you chief of surgery yet?”

A smile quirks the corner of her mouth. “No, and I doubt they will anytime soon.”

“I wasn’t kidding when I said you could be director of the Bureau one day, you know.” He’d known even back then, after only a few months of working together, that she was something special.

“That one wasn’t in the cards, was it?” she asks, looking into her wine glass.

He shrugs, turns to face her, leans a hip against the countertop. “I didn’t help matters much, I suppose.”

“I chose to leave.” Her voice is firm, resolute. “I wanted to go with you.”

“And now?” he asks, even though he knows the answer.

Her gaze is steady but the wavering of her chin betrays her. “I chose to leave. I wanted to be on my own.”

He nods, rests a reassuring hand on her knee. When he moves to pull away she laces her fingers into his and breathes deeply, closing her eyes.

He remembers the first time he’d visited her here, after they’d split three years ago. She’d still had things in boxes and that had given him hope. She’d answered the door in a sports bra, some exercise DVD running on the TV behind her, a sheen of sweat coating her chest.

That had been the first “this is really the last time.”

He is not sure which number they are on now, as her head drops wearily to his shoulder and he feels the dewyness of her lips behind his earlobe, but he is just thankful that they are still counting.

Talk about Noise...

There are a ton of third party characters I’d like to see in Smash. Sadly, Sakurai seems very picky with what characters are allowed in, choosing only extremely recognizable characters. I mean who hasn’t at least heard of Sonic and Pac-Man? Not only that, but all the companies which all the third party fighter have been taken from so far are huge, so you probably won’t see an indie mascot like Quote or Shovel Knight. There is however a BIG company Smash Bros hasn’t tackled yet. I’m talking about Square Enix. So who’s gonna be Square’s representative? Sora? I mean, yeah, probably. He’s the most iconic Square’s character if you ask me. Maybe Cloud, too, but FFVII was never ported to a Nintendo console, so he couldn’t even get in. So yeah, Sora it is.

…..

Oh, but that’s boring! As long as we’re fantasizing, let’s use a little imagination and not focus on who’s the most likely candidate. So who else you got, Square Enix? Crono? Nah. Erdrick? Mmmh… no. Randi? Eeeeeh… not quite. I’m thinking someone more… contemporary.

Beauty and the Beast ()

I think the dance scene is the most romantic scene Disney ever made. I remember watching it in 3D a few years ago and standing completely stagnant, thinking: “when will they make such a wonderful moment again?” All I know by now is that they couldn’t do this with Frozen or Tangled, or even some of their later classics, such as Mulan and Aladdin.

Although the most recent adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is quite different from the Disney one, it felt obliged to make one dance scene too. It’s a very beautiful movie, I guarantee you, with a really good take on the possibilities of this specific fairy tale. But I think the dance scene is the most beautiful on it.

And now, finally, we have this iconic scene on Once Upon a Time and it’s so different from the other two. Once Upon a Time may not have the most brilliant clothing designer and the best camera settings, but Emilie de Ravin and Robert Carlyle made this scene so beautiful we can’t help but forget everything besides them. 

Different from both the other scenes, this one brings something almost sexual without leaving out the beauty and the romance. It’s just perfect!
