Crewniverse tricked us into thinking that Pink’s palanquin is a lot bigger than it is - same with Pink, herself. When Blue walks up to her own palanquin, it’s obvious that it’s just the right size for her.
But when she’s next to Pink’s, there are a LOT of optical illusions going on:
Blue was kneeling or crouching by it at first, making it look bigger.
When Blue stands up, she still looks shorter because she’s slouching.
The way the palanquin is leaning makes the roof look higher.
The flowers obscure the bottom, making it hard to see just how big it is.
The palanquin is on a hill, making it higher, and thus bigger-looking.
The legs are extended (the ones on Blue’s were retracted), making it higher.
In the above image, you can already see that Pink’s palanquin only comes to Blue’s shoulders. Let’s take a closer look and find out just how big it is:
Already we can see that the palanquin is a lot smaller than it initially looks. Let’s find out how much smaller Pink really is next to Blue.
So it looks like Pink is probably less than half as tall as Blue. Maybe about halfway up her thigh, give-or-take. Looks like Pink’s palanquin lends credence to:
The common theory that Pink is the newest Diamond.
If so, this would mean Pink is even newer than I thought! That would explain why Blue (and Eyeball and Holly Blue and even Yellow) seem to act as if Pink was especially precious: She’s just a little kid!
EDIT: (In case anyone sees this.) Nice to see this post getting attention and some good discussion! =D I’ll note that I’m experimenting with how much detail to include in a theory post, and how to best present information. Some stuff has been brought up that I left out on purpose for readability, or because it wouldn’t make a huge difference in the end result. That said:
It definitely looks like Crewniverse was trying to make the height difference hard to notice, and the height difference is consistant thorughout the scene. To me, the scene screams “We’re leaving subtle hints about things we haven’t revealed, again!”
Blue isn’t much closer to the camera than the palanquin, so there shouldn’t be too much of a perspective difference.
The ‘How Are Gems Made’ Minisode states that Gems suck the life out of the ground to skip childhood (I suspect Peridot will grow). Gems are probably designed to do that because the Diamonds wanted them to get to work right away. If the Diamonds don’t have that feature, however, they’d experience childhood.
I do think dialogue hints at Pink being a child, rather than a runt. For example, Yellow calls Pink’s zoo “silly,” suggesting a childish nature.
I do think that young Gems and Diamonds would still grow up very, very slowly. Remember that Pink would have to be a MINIMUM of ~1,000 years old by the time she was taken down; probably much, much older, especially if the Gem writing in Off Colors is any indication.
I suspect that Blue and Yellow are already fully grown. Between that, and the previous bullet point, we wouldn’t see any height difference with Blue between The Answer and Steven’s Dream.
I guess I got some good feedback on how much detail to include, and I’ll try to adjust accordingly for future posts. Thanks!
Okay, so I just binge read all thirteen chapters of Adventures of Supergirl, a comic series based on the CBS (now CW) show. And now I’m going to list little facts (semi-canon facts) for all you fan authors and artists for your shit. So here you go:
Kara lives in Hammersmith Tower, apartment 4-A.
Kara had a bully on earth during high school called Belinda-the-bully, who seemed to always beat Kara at Street Combat Six using a surprise uppercut TKO.
Also there were no video games on Krypton.
Kara has one hell of an uppercut thanks to Belinda-the-bully.
Kara has to calculate everything during a rescue. Air resistance, negative acceleration, matching the object’s speed. Like everything. Or else whiplash could kill victims or she’ll make a cater after every landing or things would crash against her as she catches them. Our girl knows how to multitask like a boss.
Kara does her calculations in Sulls, a weight measurement on Krypton. She problems converting these to pounds.
Alex is approximately 31 Sulls.
Kara isn’t that great with Earth’s physics. The Rokyn Society’s Gravitistics doesn’t line up with Newton’s laws all too well. She apparently tried to tell that to her ninth grade teacher while English wasn’t her first language.
Krypton didn’t believe in resolving conflict by physical violence. They first exhausted communication, every diplomatic option before disagreements got out of hand. So, that explains a lot about Kara’s temperament and hesitance to start a fight.
Kara talks to Clark a lot about people finding out about her identity and how it would affect the people she cares for.
Winn has a badass hijab-and-leather-jacket-wearing hacker friend named Rabiah Zinoman, who can go up against an alien who is practically a computer himself.
Did I mention her screen name is RazzleDazzle130?
Edit: She also explicitly mentions she does not date, which is typical of a devote Muslim, of course, this doesn’t apply to everyone (props for writers here?)
Speaking of screen names, Winn has several: Supergirl_In_Action252, Mufungo, and Dollm8ker (the latter being a throwback to his comic book roots).
… James apparently got turned into a turtle once? (I need a fic now!)
Kara had a college roommate named Donna, who was in love with Silence of the Lambs and would watch it every few weeks. After capturing and interrogating Fort Rozz criminals, Kara doesn’t like it that much anymore.
Kara’s father used to say, “Not my cup of Thoni tea.”
Kara learned how to control her dreams from the decades in the phantom zone. She dreamt of Kypton mostly. She used a Kryptonian dreaming technique called Tarukor for the control. She’s also so proficient in it that she went toe-to-toe with an alien known for manipulating/creating dreams.
Alex promptly calls Kara a dream warrior.
Kara, after dreaming/sleeping for decades, didn’t sleep much on earth the years following her landing. Now she mostly does it out of habit and normalcy.
Alex and Kara saw My Chemical Romance in concert. Seriously just imagine scene teens Kara and Alex though.
Kara had a weird dream about Oscar Isaac once.
Cat milks stuff for days after a Supergirl fight.
Kryptonians used sunstones as pictures. Like multi-faceted rocks with pictures on them.
Kara is very proficient in hand-to-hand combat (since she learned of the DEO), despite not learning it on Krypton. Without her powers, Kara can still kick your ass if she wanted to. She also really likes uppercuts.
Clark loves mysteries, grew up reading them and they are half the reason he became a reporter, wanting to uncover the secrets in people. They infuriate Kara, though, she just wants the world to be straightforward.
Alex doesn’t know Kryptonese.
Alex had a med school boyfriend that used to write poems about them together like “And so we fight, tooth and claw, with our backs to the wall.” That may have been the reason they broke up.
Cat apparently partied with cast of Hamilton.
Cat had lunch with Gwendoline Christie.
Hand of Krypton was its justice system’s greatest honor and heaviest responsibility. They were in service to Krypton’s future.
Kara went to Stanhope College.
College actually challenged Kara in academics her first year. Yes, Supergirl was brought low by Professor Haley’s Oceanography pop quizzes.
Kara did a huge research paper on doxing in college.
By her own admission, Kara graduated ‘top-ish’ of her class (knowing her though I headcanon that she was at least top ten).
Kara curses a lot more in Kryptonese than in English. Like a lot.
Kara learned (passable) English in a day. Our girl is a fast learner (do as you please with that information).
Midvale is in California, on the beach.
Kara can fly to about 40,000 feet before she’ll be at risk of being in space.
The DEO has at least one agent that wears hijab.
Clark says, “Truth, justice, and the American way,” Kara on the other hand would say, “Hope, help and compassion for all.”
But seriously guys, go read them. The art, dialogue, and narration is colorful and amazing. They’re really fun and since we’re in hiatus they’re good fillers before Season Two starts. They’re about 99 cents apiece and there’s only thirteen chapters.
Top 4 Life Changing Apps You Need as a College Student (With Demos)
Hey everyone! I was just using each of these apps today to study for my midterms, and I figured I’d share the wealth. I got each of these apps from the Apple App Store, and use them seamlessly across my Apple devices. I hope each of them change your midterm weeks for the better! (This is post is kind of long but I made it long to cover what I think are the coolest/most useful things about these apps)
App #1: Notability
Yah, yah. You’ve heard of this one before. I’m here to show you some reasons for that.
1. Annotating and Combining All of the Powerpoints and PDF’s of Your Wildest Dreams
Holy crap is this thing good at converting powerpoints and PDFs. The transition is undetectable. Furthermore, if your lecture material was split up into 2 powerpoints that your professor posted, or multiple topics are covered in one powerpoint that you want to separate, you can either combine them into one note, or only import selected slides into separate notes. Once you do that, you can draw, highlight, add photos and additional typed text…pretty much anything extra you’d need is at your fingertips.
Demo: Importing PDFS:
Here I’m taking a random web page PDF from organicchem.org about chair conformers, tapping once on it, and copying it to the notability app.
You literally just tap a couple times and it’s done for you. You can add the PDF to a new note, an old note, or even take specific pages of the PDF/powerpoint and place only the ones you want into a new or existing note. It’s almost too easy to be true.
2. You Can Actually Write Neatly
If you’re anything like me, it bothers you how your handwriting suddenly looks messy when you write on tablets. Well, notability handles that for you.
Demo: Writing and Editing Written Text:
Here I’m writing a huge note of what I want to remember with the pencil tool. I picked a red color from the huge color selection, and a rather thin pencil line because it’s only a small side-note. Of course you can customize your writing to fit what is easiest for you to read and study from. What happens in the second and third pictures is the cool part:
You can use the scissors tool to put a circle around what you just wrote, and then pinch and rotate the text to change its size and orientation, as well as drag your finger to move it to where you want your note to go. This way you can write super neatly and just do the moving around afterwords, making sure you can see your text and are comfortable with the way it appears. You can also re-select it to make it bigger again if you change your mind.
3. You Can Record and Embed Your Lectures Into Your Notes, While You’re Writing Original Notes OR Annotating Existing Ones
You can do them at the same time. You don’t have to think about inserting a recording after the fact, or mixing up small recordings and meshing them into one document. Notability sorts your audio recordings and fixes them up pretty for you, and just starts recording as soon as you hit the speaker button. Then you can keep annotating what Dr. So-and-So is saying without worrying about your recording being in the right place.
Demo: Recording While Note-Taking:
After you’ve recorded, you can click the speaker button again to edit the recording’s volume, sort multiple recordings you’ve taken as well as name them. Move the recordings from note to note, etc.
App #2: Flashcard Hero
Known colloquially as: “How I’m Passing My Anatomy Lab”
Listen here y’all if you wanna make flashcards fast as fuck and learn them the day of your practical, Flashcard Hero is how.
General Overview of Best Features:
The way I predominantly use this app is by furiously making and organizing my flashcards into millions of sections and subsections on my computer, so that everything is findable and easy to access within my flashcard deck. Then I move them via iCloud over to my phone and tablet to study them on the go.
You can put pictures, videos, PDF pages, anything on the front or back of your flashcard, and just as much as you want on the back as well. When you study, you can choose if you want the front or back to show up first, or an alternation of the two if you prefer. There is no length limit on what you can place on a particular card.
While you’re studying, the app gives you options of clicking “Easy, Unsure, or Hard” on the card you’re reviewing, so that it will pop up with the ones you’re unsure/really clueless about more often. This saves my actual ass I can’t recommend it enough. It has improved my ability to memorize tons of material far more quickly and efficiently.
Demo: The General Interface of Flashcard Hero:
You can see some of the features I’ve talked about. If you want to know even more of the features, try downloading the app and checking out the “Tutorial” deck it includes on the main menu!
App #3: LiquidText
This is another insanely useful method of PDF annotation. It is like nothing I’ve ever seen before, and is really good for people who enjoy mind-mapping and comprehensively organizing their ideas while reading!
Best Feature: Organizing Important Bits of Text:
Okay prepare to be very happy about this. You can literally highlight a section of a PDF, drag it to the side of your screen, and poof. Your highlighted bit is saved for you to click on and easily access later. You can even link your highlighted bits, no matter how far apart they are within the document, to help connect and organize your thoughts. And wait until you see Highlightview, where you can pinch the document so that all of your highlighted portions come together labelled with page numbers. Too satisfying okay, too satisfying:
If you’re reading something really quickly before class, and you want to easily access interesting portions of a long text during a class discussion, this app will save your life and save you pain in the long run.
App #4: MyScript Calculator
Just watch the demo of this one and prepare to take a huge sigh of relief and awe and happiness. It actually works and doesn’t confuse what you’re writing, and will do difficult/complex computation. By changing around the settings to fit the discipline of math you’re doing, this app can save you some annoying typing into calculators and can help you visualize large calculations at a glance.
Best Features: Blowing my tiny, bad at fast-math mind
Demo: General Interface of MyScript Calculator
Just. Yes. Yes good.
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this/found at least one of these useful! Merry midterms!
YOI Future!Verse ABO AU, Visual Headcanon Web Charts #01
So I always wanted to make one of these. Turns out my headcanons for the most part are WAY too wordy for these things and uh, they’re a bit of a mess >.>;; BUT I hope nonetheless that they’re somewhat fun to read even if barely legible, it was fun to make ^ ^;
1. Super basic relationship chart of the core members of the lovely poly family in this AU.
2. “Adults Think,” the color of each adult indicates their feelings towards the person to whom the arrow is pointing.
3. “Kids Think,” the color of each OC kid indicates their feelings towards the person to whom the arrow is pointing.
There’s obviously a lot more to it than what could be crammed in the lil text boxes, but a gist and pretty much the first things that immediately popped into my mind regarding their interactions. 2 and 3 also mostly show their thoughts while the kids are younger, which will change a bit as they grow up, to be covered in a future post.
*Recommended you right click view image to see full size bc the text is tiny oops
Because the text is so illegible, text only versions of charts 2 and 3
beneath cut, all elaborated quite a bit because I’m so rambly oops:
IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS AU: It’s Yuuri-centric polyamory in an ABO
setting, Yuuri’s married to four mates (Victor, Yurio, Phichit, Minami)
and they have OC kids.
I got a request to explain how to apply a doodle gif texture, and since I couldn’t find a tutorial, I decided to make one myself! I will be explaining (with lots of pictures) how to apply the hearts gif shown in the banner. I used the hearts gif from this doodle pack.
What you will need: photoshop. I use cc 2015. Difficulty level: ★★☆☆☆
Try to rip people off with shady flipped houses? Watch me flip your bank account.
So I don’t think this is entirely pro, but this just happened and I’m quite pleased with myself. Sorry for how long it is, I’m a wordy person.
Background: my girlfriend and I have been trying to buy a house for a month or two. Housing market where we live is tough, we don’t have a huge income, most houses sell within 24 hours, etc so it’s been a struggle. About a month and a half ago we found a house that was PERFECT. In the neighborhood we wanted, 2 bed 2 bath, at the very top of our price range but still doable, etc etc. Best part is that it’s beautifully renovated, new roof, everything is new and gorgeous! We put in an offer, but get outbid by someone else (which is crushing, if you have yet to experience that).
We mourn and then continue searching for other houses….until we get a call from our agent saying that the other buyers backed out and the seller is offering it to us first before putting it back on the market.
A quick important note here: the seller is the owner, but is also acting as his own real estate agent, and he runs his own business buying foreclosures and flipping them. This is important later.
◇ pairing: jungkook | reader ◇ genre: angst and a sprinkle of fluff ◇ word count: 18.748 ◇ warnings: implied smut ◇ disclaimer: I do not own the hanahaki disease concept.
I am immensely thankful for the talented people who have created art / edits for this story:x, x, x, x, x, x ♡ also, make sure to read moonlight (drabble from jimin’s pov) and home after rain (short sequel) after reading this story. enjoy!
You were eighteen years old when Jimin’s name showed up on your hand.
The day is fresh and clear in your memory: early December, the winds stronger than ever as they threatened to pierce through the windows of your room, hints of snowflake dancing in the air as the first snowfall augured an even sharper winter. There was a smile on your face that didn’t match the unrelenting coldness of the month, and even though the night was falling and the air felt icy on the tips of your fingers, there was only warmth in your chest as you went through the pictures of your phone.
Pictures of you and Jimin drinking hot chocolate, of clumsy iceskating, of funny faces that made you laugh out loud in the quietness of your bedroom. The feeling sparking in your chest could be considered somewhat dangerous— after all, you were just a girl that didn’t have any marks on her skin, a girl whose fate was yet to be decided. Something as enigmatic as love could be a treacherous thing, too risky for someone that couldn’t decide their destiny on their own.
Like a whole bunch of other people, I saw @charminglyantiquated ’s Elsewhere University Comic and got SUPER INSPIRED. And since she’s so generously encouraging other people to play in her sandbox, I present ‘Feathers’. EDIT : PART 2 HERE
You go to Elsewhere University. You’ve been going to Elsewhere University for (years and years and years and years) for three years now. You know how things are. You’re not an RA, but… Mm, you could have been.
Might still be. Aren’t yet.
This is your junior year (you think). You know how things are. You carry salt in one pocket, iron in another, trinkets to bargain away in your book bag, offerings in your purse, pearls around your neck.
Yuri on Ice interview translation - Animage 2017/01 (p20-23)
I was going to post this last week but gave priority to the BD stuff. This will be the final interview from the booklet that came with January Animage! There’s still an interview with Kenji Miyamoto left untranslated, but it will be taken care of by @whiteboxgems whenever she has time! I’ll reblog it when it’s around.
This is actually 2 interviews, I’m posting them together because they were one after the other and (main reason) because the second one is very short. A few notes below to better understand the interviews.
The first one is with Yuuichirou Hayashi, the one who created the ending (ED = ending by the way) footage. I have the feeling someone previously posted translations of the captions under the ED screenshots, but I don’t remember where and I’m pretty sure it was just the captions and not the interview parts, so here you have it complete. This one is pretty interesting because he explains in detail how they created the ED, and has some extra information on cut scenes etc. Definitely a must read in my opinion!
The second one is a short interview with Kayoko Ishikawa, the one who did the costume designs. Here you might think: didn’t Chacott design the costumes? I’ll explain. It’s more or less like with Mitsurou Kubo and Tadashi Hiramatsu: Kubo created the original designs for the characters, from scratch, and Hiramatsu transformed them into designs specifically created for animation, therefore with simpler lines, detailed expression sheets and so on. Likewise, Chacott did the original designs for the costumes, from scratch, based on the indications by Yamamoto and Kubo, and then the anime’s costume designer simplified and modified them so that they would be suitable to be animated. (Before actually animating them there’s a further step: the anime’s color designer is going to decide the exact colors, shadows and highlights included, that will be used inside the anime. I translated an interview with the color designer Izumi Hirose some time ago)
I usually don’t add pictures but this time I felt that it would be better to add them as an immediate reference. However, they are just for reference and are not meant to be visually stunning, so please bear with the quality because I just took photos of the magazine with my phone and quickly edited them.
Translation under the cut! (kind of image-heavy)

I really like aliens so I’ll go ahead and rate my little boys
He looks cute and kind of nice, this shows that aliens do come in piece, the gradient effect gives a 3 D S P A C E P I N B A L L feel which is a nice touch. 4/5. He’s really nice, someone give him live stock for his planet.
I’m not sure Google is aware of the popular conception of aliens, but maybe they know something we don’t???? The colors are flat, something that in most cases is not bad, but this time it is, he seeks intelligent life yet he looks as he has no life at all. 1/5.
He’s conventionally attractive and happy for some reaon, I’d let him make patterns in my crops, the T H I C C lines are not the best idea but the glow in his eyes are perfect. Not the best desing choices but I can deal with it. 3/5.
Isn’t this the most visually pleasing gradient ever made by human kind? But not for this guy, he looks like he’s dying cuz can’t breath our oxygen, poor fellow, also his face looks strange, he might as well be Mr. Burns. 3/5. Looks really smug and I bet this kid thinks he’s the smartest guy in the class.
Straight out of the uncanny valley, the face you’d expect to see from a badly written creepypasta edited over an old photo that’s supposed to possess you, looks scary, creepy and offsetting but not in the nice way aliens are supposed to look. Please deport him to his planet. 0/5. Save your children from LG cellphones.
Look at this guy, like LOOK at This gUY!! His cute smile, this lime boy looks so mischievous, probably on space Santa’s naughty children list. The lines, the colors and the E D G E S are so pleasing to the eyes. 5/5. I’d let this guy invade my planet any day and eradicate all sentient matter without hesitation.
He’s scary, creepy and offsetting in the nice way aliens are supposed to be, the soulless eyes and the grey color blend so nice together making him intimidating and also hypnotizing. 5/5. Please take me away with you and use me as a guinea pig for your nefastus plots.
The colors looks like he’s from a flash animation and his face of utter disgust makes him unpleasant, I’ll take him with my leader because I don’t wanna deal with him. 3/5. You might be ugly, but you’re the designated emoji for most of my chats.
He’s minimalistic and cute, this grey buddy is my friend, please hug him and treat him nicely, he just want diplomatic relations with our planet, give him love and natural resources, he deserves them. 4/5.
This guy is not an alien, he’s a light outlet. He’s nice and is probably that one cousin they sit with you on family gatherings, not because you get along, but because they want you to keep him from doing something stupid like breaking a bowl or causing a nuclear holocaust. 2/5. Sorry Kyle, I’m not your baby sister.
And here we go, folks: as promised, my first in a series of critical posts regarding Broadway, culture, and my opinion on the state of theatre today.
Let me preface this post with a clear disclaimer: I am a major fan of Anastasia and have been since the Don Bluth movie came out in 1997. I also understand why Santo Loquasto was selected by the American Theatre Wing as this year’s Tony winner for costume design; I congratulate him heartily, because he is a master of the craft.
But with that out of the way, I disagree with the American Theatre Wing on this award and truly believe that the award should have gone to Linda Cho for her work on Anastasia. I think this honestly was the most upsetting snub for me last night. In some ways, this gets to the heart of another post I made. From an aesthetic standpoint, Linda Cho’s costumes were more visually impressive, more memorable, and more original than those for Hello, Dolly! I’m not alleging any animus in the ATW’s decision, to be clear; it goes more to the somewhat staid, static vision of theatre possessed by the eligible voters.
Now, part of the reason I find the HD costumes uninspiring is because thanks to HD being a revival, there is a kind of need to look to the past productions for inspiration, since the director and producers were not trying to go for some kind of completely original setting (which is fine, for the record!).
But to my mind, the Best Costume Design category is designed to reward originality and accomplishment, not just improvements on a theme. The costumes that Linda Cho designed for Anastasia manage to have a kind of timeless elegance that grabs the eye and forces you to notice not only the actors, but the costumes themselves.
Anya’s (Christy Altomare) red and blue gowns from Act II have stuck in my head since the very first stills were released to Playbill ages and ages ago. For visual pops, you cannot beat these (all photos are either from Playbill or other publicly available sources, and are not my property):
Both of these gowns exude a classic elegance that is unrivaled on Broadway today, paying homage to the source material (the high society of the Roaring 20s in Paris, as well as the Russian designs included on the red gown) while still looking fresh.
The lines on the blue gown in particular are exquisite, and give Christy Altomare (who is not a tall woman) the appearance of added height without it being obvious that is what it’s designed to do.
The costumes for the Romanovs are also elegant, sophisticated, and memorable (I lack a proper still for this that I can attribute to Playbill or Broadway World or Broadway Box and thus the still is drawn from Pinterest; if you are the original photographer, please message me and I will edit this post to credit you).
For those familiar with the show, you know the ones I mean: the ghostly pearlescent white of Nicholas, Alexandra, and the others slain at the start of the musical. The costumes are graceful, and a good match to many images of the real Romanovs in the era in which the prologue is set. But as with Anya’s gowns…truly, there is a level beyond the simple. I called them “ghostly” for a reason: you can’t look at them without having a terrible sense that these people (innocent for the purposes of the musical) are about to be slain. Linda Cho made funeral shrouds out of ballgowns–and that is a metaphor that works on a huge number of levels.
But you know where Linda Cho really gets me? The costumes for Lily (Caroline O’Connor), Vlad (John Bolton), and Dimitry (Derek Klena). Let’s take each in turn, with just one example per.
This is a Playbill still from the Broadway performance of (I believe) either “Land of Yesterday” or “The Countess and the Common Man”. One of my fellow fanastasias ( @nikolaevna-romanova or @anyasdimitry perhaps?) can confirm which scene/number.
I’ll focus on Lily for the moment. That gold dress is clearly designed to pop. Lily is a fun, flirty, outrageous character, like her spiritual predecessor in the 1997 film as voiced by the divine Bernadette Peters. Caroline O’Connor brings a downright saucy quality to the character that this gown is designed to highlight. The character is a fallen aristocrat who acts as press secretary/majordomo to the Dowager Empress. She’s supposed to look wealthy–but a kind of shabby wealthy, like someone down on their luck.
So let’s take a closer look at this Linda Cho masterpiece (via Broadway Box):
The pattern and the cut of the dress are simple–much simpler than would have been worn by the nouveaux-riches of post-war Paris, but still quite elegant and stylish, especially when accented with the lace gloves. But it’s a far cry from the style that Countess Malevsky-Malevitch would have been used to in her old life in imperial St. Petersburg. She’s had to make reductions–but damn if she’s not going to make them work. Linda Cho really captures that perfectly. This dress looks, in addition to being beautiful, like it might have come from a very high end store, but wasn’t custom-made as would have been expected of someone with massive resources. While presenting a memorable dress, Linda Cho stuck to the history: Lily is down on her old circumstances (as the Romanov family was post-Revolution) but she will still Look The Part.
Next, I look at how Linda Cho costumed Vlad Popov, the would-be Count and titular Common Man of the previous number. This still is courtesy of Getty.fr and numerous other news orgs, and is from the Broadway opening night:
It looks pretty fancy, right? It is! But if you look at it closely and in the context of the play, it’s in the same category as Lily’s gold dress. The fabrics are clearly fine, but it’s not a custom tailoring, even though this comes after he is restored to some measure of glory. Linda Cho replicates a rich French brocade for the vest and matches it to the morning coat perfectly (more technically, I believe it’s a stroller, though the term is anachronistic for the year the musical is set). But there’s a reminder to the common-man status in the design of the trousers: leaving them striped, subtly, the way Linda Cho did is a subtle signal that Vlad is not born to wealth–no aristocrat would have styled themselves that way. But he mixes the two styles in a subtle nod to what he is (a commoner) and what he pretends to be (a Count).
Finally, there’s the costuming for Dimitry. Playbill ran this still before opening night, and it’s a perfect one to showcase why Linda Cho was such a genius with her choices:
We know from the musical that Dima is a poor con artist, really not much more than a gutter rat as it were and his costuming matches. The fabrics he wears are rough-hewn and cheap-looking (by intention) because he would never have been able to afford anything else unless he aggressively bartered. As a good man in early Communist Russia, he wouldn’t have had the resources to style himself any better–we get the sense Vlad can only because he had the clothes beforehand. Dimitry is all commoner, all working class, all rough (the same with Anya’s Act I wardrobe).
Now, it’s easy to make a costume look cheap–but Linda Cho does more than that. She makes it look cared for. After all, Dimitry has no resources to replace a winter coat if it’s torn, and so we see that while worn, it’s clearly cared for. His shoulder bag, if a bit out of place in the era, is the same: the leather is time-worn and it’s clearly a possession he has had most of his life. That’s not an easy look to master, and to execute it so flawlessly requires real skill.
Here’s my bottom line. The costumes that Linda Cho designed were bold and innovative, and perfectly matched to the heart and soul of the characters who wore them. They took some risks in the way in which they used colors and fabrics, and they blended some modern sensibilities with the design elements and fabrics of the era the musical is set in. That is the kind of thinking that I feel the American Theatre Wing had a chance to reward with the Tony in 2017, and it’s why I feel disappointed by the snubbing of Linda Cho. Her costumes weren’t groundbreaking, but they were unique, they were original, and above all, they felt like they improved the overall quality of the show for their presence.
I doubt Linda Cho will ever read this, but if she does: you own the Tony in my mind, and I cannot wait to see what you come up with for the next show lucky enough to hire you to design their costumes.
I personally think it would have been a really interesting dynamic to see this Asian-American guy who’s not in touch with his Asian roots go and get in touch with them and discover this power. I think that’s super interesting and we’ve never seen that. We’ve seen this narrative already; we’ve seen it many times. So I thought it would be cool and that it would add some more color to The Defenders. And obviously I can do my own fight sequences, so those would be more dynamic. I think it would be really interesting to have that feeling of an outsider. There’s no more of an outsider than an Asian-American: We feel like outsiders in Asia and we feel like outsiders at home. That’s been really difficult — especially for me. It’s been hard for me, because in the casting world, it’s very specific. So when they see me and I’m six-two, I’m a 180 pounds, I’m a muscular half-Asian dude. They’re like, “Well, I don’t know what to do with this guy.” They’re like, “He’s not Asian, he’s not white … no.” That’s what I’ve been dealing with my whole life. So I understand those frustrations of being an outsider. Like Danny’s character. I understand him very well. — Lewis Tan
