I don’t really like how this came out but um, we only had a semester long paint class so for our final painting we could do whatever we wanted so i drew my favorite musician u_u i’m gonna see green day in april and i’m really excited so..✌🏻️
The quotes mentioned here are from Neil Gaiman's book Coraline and not from the film adaption.
“It wasn’t brave because he wasn’t scared: it was the only thing he could do. But going back again to get his glasses, when he knew the wasps were there, when he was really scared. That was brave.’ ‘Because,’ she said, ‘when you’re scared but you still do it anyway, that’s brave.”
“She sat down on one of her grandmother's uncomfortable armchairs, and the cat sprang up into her lap and made itself comfortable. The light that came through the picture window was daylight, real golden late-afternoon daylight, not a white mist light. The sky was a robin's-egg blue, and Coraline could see trees and, beyond the trees, green hills, which faded on the horizon into purples and grays. The sky had never seemed so sky, the world had never seemed so world ... Nothing, she thought, had ever been so interesting.”
“The mice have a message for you,' he whispered. Coraline didn't know what to say. 'The message is this. Don't go through the door.' He paused. 'Does that mean anything to you?”
“It was true: the other mother loved her. But she loved Coraline as a miser loves money, or a dragon loves its gold. In the other mother’s button eyes, Coraline knew that she was a possession, nothing more. A tolerated pet, whose behavior was no longer amusing.”
“Please. What’s your name?’ Coraline asked the cat. ‘Look, I’m Coraline. Okay?’ The cat yawned slowly, carefully, revealing a mouth and tongue of astounding pinkness. ‘Cats don’t have names,’ it said. ‘No?’ said Coraline. ‘No,’ said the cat. ‘Now, you people have names. That’s because you don’t know who you are. We know who we are, so we don’t need names.’ There”
“They were having an argument as old and comfortable as an armchair, the kind of argument that no one ever really wins or loses but which can go on forever, if both parties are willing.”
“That is why we could not leave here, when we died. She kept us, and she fed on us, until now we've nothing left of ourselves, only snakeskins and spider husks. Find our secret hearts, young mistress.”
“Coraline took a deep breath and stepped into the darkness, where strange voices whispered and distant winds howled. She became certain that there was something in the dark behind her: something very old and very slow. Her heart beat so hard and so loudly she was scared it would burst out of her chest. She closed her eyes against the dark. Eventually”
“But how can you walk away from something and still come back to it?" "Easy," said the cat. "Think of somebody walking around the world. You start out walking away from something and end up
coming back to it."
“You really don't understand, do you? I don't want whatever I want. Nobody does. Not really. What kind of fun would it be if I just got everything I ever wanted? Just like that, and it didn't mean anything.”
“I was kidnapped by aliens, they came down from outer space with ray guns, but I fooled them by wearing a wig and laughing in a foreign accent, and I escaped.”
“For a moment she felt utterly dislocated. She did not know where she was; she was not entirely sure who she was. It is astonishing just how much of what we are can be tied to the bed we wake up in in the morning and it is astonishing how fragile that can be.”
Hey, I don't really cosplay that often... Mostly because I don't really feel like I look enough like the character or whatever. But I really want to do Wirt. So I was looking up wirt cosplays and I found yours and you have the best cloak out of all the Wirt cosplays... So if you could tell me how you came across the cloak, and hat that'd be really swell. Thanks.
aww thanks! i don’t actually cosplay that often either, so I had my mom help me with this one~
sure i’ll help you out! ill start with the hat, since it was the easier of the two to explain!
so i started with a pattern, and i measured the length around my head where i wanted the cone to sit. it took a few tries to get it right, so don’t get discouraged! its basically a cone pattern, so more like a fat triangle thing.
ill put a picture so it’s easy to see! the bottom isnt straight, so that part can get a little tricky with the measurements— i gave myself a little bit of room, i’d rather have it big in the end and be able to trim it down, rather than have to start over because it was too small.
after that, you can cut out your pattern, and fold it like a cone, and put some tape. test it on your head to see if it fits, and it’s comfortable! if its too big, take a little off the sides and try again. ((the picture is a bit messy, so you might want to make the two edges a bit sharper and more equal so you get a proper point on the top)) if you like your cone, then untape it, and get ready to make the base.
The fabric i used is the same red one i used for the inside of the cape. I made the base out of cardstock, cutting out the same pattern out onto the cardstock. then, lay your fabric on the cone, and cut out the same shape. ((leave a little bit for seam allowance on the sides, and leave some on the bottom so you can fold the extra parts under the cone!))
so this is where it gets a little complicated, take the fabric off, and tape the cardstock cone together. once you’ve done that, you can sew the fabric part of the cone together, along the space where you left the seam allowance. So you have a limp fabric cone and a cardstock cone for your base. Make sure your cardstock cone is properly taped with some heavy duty tape before you continue!
now, take the fabric cone, and slide it over the cardstock cone. and when that happens, you can fold the extra flaps you have into the cone, and hem around the bottom. then you have your hat! if it doesnt stay, then you might have to attach some strings, or bobby pin it in the back—
Now, onto the cloak!
for this part, you need two rectangular fabrics, about as long as you want it to reach. and once you’ve got that cut, lay them next to each other, and then put them inside out, and hem along the edges, leaving the top open.
when you have that done, you can flip it inside out, and you should have two top flaps. so to make the neck part, what me and my mom did, was we had the two top flaps, and folded them in towards the inside, with the blue one showing on the outside. then you have this tube like thing, and you can feed an elastic tie through there, so you can tighten around your neck.
granted, this may or may not work, depending on the fabric you have, because i had a stretchy blue fabric, so i was able to manipulate it a bit.
hopefully i’ve covered everything— don’t get discouraged if it seems a little hard because it took me and my mom a while to figure it out! also, if you need any pictures or anything of the cloak or hat, feel free to ask UuU! my computer stopped cooperating halfway through this, so i wasnt able to add anymore—
