i don't know how to tag this but it's an interesting book

i'm bitter because noora always gets so much screentime but also because it makes NO sense this season and they didn't even try an explanation? like can we at least know why chris and sana aren't as close anymore? also, vilde and sana seemed closer than noora and sana in s2 and 3 but that doesn't fit julie shoving noora into every scene so we get caricature vilde instead

I know, I was actually really excited at the start of this season because it was a chance to explore the other side of the girl squad. Sana and Chris were the two who were originally friends and I’ve always been curious what their relationship would be like… but I can accept that Ina is busy. Maybe in-universe they weren’t as close after Chris got absorbed with Kasper but like you said, it would be nice to have given them a nod? Wouldn’t Chris at least still be texting her pictures of cats tagged “it u” or something? But actually the relationship in the girl squad I’ve always found the most interesting for Sana is Vilde

They were introduced as the polar opposites of the girl squad and their conflict and its dramatic resolution was the basis of establishing that they’re all friends in the first place. Sana’s had a lot of big emotional moments with her (“I threw water in Ingrid’s face because she and her friends called you a slut for hooking up with William.” “Vilde isn’t a mean person. We’re her friends.” ‘What are you talking about? You’re our bus boss.” “She’s actually the first one I would take to war with me.”) So, even if they were in conflict, I think it would have been way more interesting to put more time into exploring Sana’s relationship with Vilde.

I would have loved this season be more about driving out the problems between them: their shared leadership (just last season they ran Kosegruppa together, this is a thing they do), Vilde’s prejudice getting pulled into the light and confronted, maybe Vilde saying something about how she doesn’t think Sana respects her (two of the nicest things she’d said about Vilde have been said to other people, how good would it be to parallel this in s4 with Sana answering her this time?). We could still get this but Vilde hasn’t really been the face of the conflict (we spend so much time on the Pepsi Max girls) and she’s already been presented as SO unpalatable and SO islamophobic this season. I would much rather first be exploring why Sana said this (and then seeing it break down):

Instead… we’ve had Sana and Noora against the world. It feels strange to ignore that Noora and Eva are best friends and just a little too convenient to me that Noora is number one in Sana’s books once we get to her season. That’s Skam’s biggest weakness, I think: shuffling around their characters from season to season based on what’s convenient and not keeping emotional continuity. Imho, I just think this is far too much time spent on her when she already had an entire season to herself and a significant focus during s1. Why can’t we be spending our remaining minutes on characters who’ll never get the spotlight (*coughs* also Even)? Who have a more organic relationship with the lead? Why instead do we have so much wasted energy on things that don’t even seem to go anywhere (Noora/Yousef, Vilde/Magnus, Noora and Sana talking to those random guys at the cafe)??

YOUR TAGS. I feel you girl. It irritates me when people pretend Dean hasn't found his perfect match. Even in S4 when Dean barely knew him Cas was gentle and wanted to understand Dean "you don't think you deserved to be saved", the park date, etc. He sacrifices everything for Dean, makes Dean laugh (HE HADN'T HAD FUN LIKE THAT IN YEARS), always comes back to Dean. I can boldly say Castiel is the one person Dean is the happiest around. It does help that he thinks Cas is devastatingly handsome.

Some people must be watching the show like this:

Because really? Dean hasn’t found someone who loves him fully and unconditionally?

A person who would be literally everything Dean would look for in a romantic partner if he allowed it for himself?

Someone who sees who Dean really is and loves him for it? Who would always choose Dean? Who would give up things for Dean? Who would rebel and fall for Dean? Who would always look out for Dean? Who would always care for Dean? Who would even keep away from Dean if it would protect him? Who would care for him when he’s wounded? Who would also care deeply for Sam because he loves him like a brother?

Someone who is his equal, a BAMF, who knows the life, who brings out his soft side, who brings him up when he’s at his lowest, who challenges him, who sometimes even frustrates him because he cares so much. Someone with no preconceptions of who a person ‘should’ be, who therefore has no comprehension of why Dean would repress certain sides of himself thanks to low self esteem and cultural norms and therefore accepts and loves him for who he is as a whole, even the sides Dean might not even like himself, helping Dean to learn to embrace them. Someone who helps him be the best him that he can be, who would always choose him and would theoretically stay at his side for centuries if need be, who, when he doesn’t stay it’s because he is trying to protect him from afar and keep him safe, but someone who always comes back to Mr Dean Abandonment Issues Winchester.

Someone who would watch over him as his mother, up on her pedestal, always said Angels would, but you know, literal Angels don’t exist so he would have to settle for a metaphorical romantic partner for this, like in all the love songs and fairy tales…

People hold hands a lot in LOTR and it’s really nice? It’s not just Frodo and Sam, but I never noticed before this reread. Pippin just now took Gandalf’s hand, and earlier he’d taken I think Bergil’s, a kid (ten, so old enough to walk around without help) he just met, as they walked around the city. So it’s apparently not weird, it’s just a Normal Thing.

Vaguely of relevance as well is the fact that Frodo says “he is very dear to me” of Aragorn after, what, about a fortnight of knowing him. I’m not saying he doesn’t have cause; it was a very crowded and busy fortnight. I too would probably call someone very dear to me if they had saved me from dying from stabbery and guided my friends safely through the wilderness.

It’s just all those ‘my dear Sam’ and ‘I love him’ that he and Sam do, even though they’re a product of extreme circumstances, aren’t even out of line with the culture they live in. They’re still just as meaningful, and I don’t think their power is decreased by that. I just think it’s notable that this isn’t even beyond the bounds of “propriety” for really close friends in high stress situations.

This isn’t where I meant this post to go, but I think this is why this story resonated with me so hard specifically as an aro and why I still don’t ship anything romantically in the Tolkienverse, because the world of Middle Earth is one where loving your close platonic friends and companions to the point of being physically and verbally affectionate is a normal occurrence. It’s just how things are. There’s a lot to be said about the cultural implications of that vs here and now, but I’m not really in a position to say it. But I think even before I knew How I Was, I knew that friends were much more important to me than romance seemed to be. And I feel, with the preponderance of love interests in most adult fiction, like Lord of the Rings was the first Grown Up Story where I saw that aspect of myself reflected.

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

(part 2) plus theyre a way to put ur charas in a completely diff context and see what theyll do. i mean i dont believe that writing ships in a certain context (like mafia) equals romanticizing that context. mafia AUs arent even my fav things to read (in fact i almost never do), im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

I’m not gonna roast you don’t worry xD okay wait let me check if I replied to this already if yes I’m gonna c/p because it’s half past midnight otherwise I’ll just go at it again wait *checks tags* fff obviously I don’t have a general post but anyway pls read this after you’ve done with my post and then this which is also choke-full of links. plus for a (not nice) laugh: here. AH WAIT I FOUND THE POST.

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so…

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term. But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

  • Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the ‘ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.
  • There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.
  • It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like… tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.
  • They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff.

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

Now, ^^^ that was the c/p-ed reply that should answer most of your doubts. What I didn’t address was:

im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

aaaand as we say here in Italy, this is where the donkey falls (sorry we have weird sayings), because in theory there’s nothing wrong with that… except that in 99% of the mafia aus I’ve seen around the thing is that they’re supposed to be cute.

like, I see a lot of shit with TINY MAFIA BOSS STEVE ROGERS with RUSSIAN ENFORCER BUCKY (????? bucky isn’t even russian???) and the yoi thing I saw before had the japanese character being the leader of a russian mafia gang which is… like… guys it doesn’t happen it really doesn’t, and a lot of them re-use wrongly terminology taken from the godfather without context or knowing what the hell it means, and it’s always from the criminals’ pov and they’re somehow seen as criminals doing justice where the police can’t (???) and like… no. mafia bosses/enforcers/employees are bad people period, and at least here if you try to leave or repent they kill your family in retribution. like, not even ten years ago there’s been a woman who used to belong to a mafia family (or one colluded with the mafia) who testified and her entire town/family shunned her and she couldn’t take it anymore and… killed herself drinking acid if I don’t recall wrong. it’s not even special cases. this shit is not funny, it’s not cute, it’s not adorable and it’s not good fodder for your imagine your otp scenario (srsly I saw one like.. let me find it,

LIKE. just look at this shit. in a regular context, the enforcer goes to the show owner to force them to pay a monthly sum to their boss lest they destroy their shop and their lives and their family’s life never mind that mafia culture is deeply homophobic so the mafia enforcer flirting with the shopkeeper is like completely fucking out of the question. I mean, people here like to shit on the sopranos but that show was actually excellent representation of Horrid Criminals Who Were Never Supposed To Be Good People and the small arc that happened when one of tony’s friends turned out to be gay (closeted) was REALLY well done. btw, it ended that when they found out he was gay most of the crowd rejected him and thought badly of him until I think they killed him also for other reasons, but that spiraled from finding out he liked dick. and that’s american mafia that they actually based on well-done research of the culture in Italy it came from, I assure you that here it doesn’t work that differently. like. the shit above is so inaccurate and frankly offensive, it’s like… I get people romanticizing problematic stuff but the thing is that when you tell them that it’s actually offensive you get brushed off as ‘ah well you’re being too sensitive it’s just a word u__u’. now, I’m all for exploring shit we wouldn’t be into, but not like THAT, because that’s like mafia romantic comedy and that’s not how it works. now, you wanna do a fic where the mafia characters are deeply flawed and bad people and the police tries to catch them? fine, great, go ahead. you wanna do a fic where the enforcer above deals with dunno an entire life of internalized homophobia when he finds the shopkeeper attractive and feels conflicted over having to con money out of him and doing horrible shit for a living and maybe understanding that crime isn’t worth it and then he actually collaborates with the police and gets shit from about everyone he knows and loves for that? okay, awesome, go ahead. nothing bad in that.

but the shit above is not exploring things we wouldn’t/writing darkfic, it’s THINKING THAT A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION WHICH IS STILL A THING IN OUR PART OF THE WORLD IS CUTE AND ADORABLE. and that only plays in their favor because it takes the bad aura out of the word and we really should not let that happen. like. that is what is bad about mafia aus and mafia discourse, that people don’t realize the mafia is alive and well and thriving and not a thing that doesn’t exist or a generic word for organized crime.

you wanna write the shit above? okay, CALL IT CRIME AU or mob au, not mafia au.

btw, add-on: idk if I mentioned it in the above post or not, but in case I didn’t, I said that people would balk at the idea of a mexican cartel au. sadly since then I’ve found out a fandom where not only there is one but it’s also extra cutesy and people apparently love it and it has a bunch of kudos/comments and idek I’m not even touching that with a ten foot pole but like… I’ve avoided it and everything that author wrote because to me it’s just… nope. like, nope. if you do mafia aus don’t make them fucking cute. (also: in the same fandom I had to mute a v. famous fanartist whose art I actually liked but did cutesy mafia aus and.. like… haahahhaahahahahaha nah sorry. can’t go there. nope.)

What would you tell a complete beginner? I want to get a snake, but I don't know that much. What should I keep in mind?

Hello anon,  good luck with all your snake research!  Finding out as much as you can before getting the animal is probably the most important thing. I can give you a few tips others may want to add if i’ve missed obvious stuff!

1) First consider if you accommodate a snake in your life?  How much space can you dedicate to the adult enclosure? Are you on a tight budget when it comes to equipment costs? Is there an exotics vet near you? Are you prepared to cover these costs? Are you prepared for their long life expectancy?

2) What do you want out of a snake? I would really recommend looking into species that are easy to feed and care for or species that are slightly more tolerant of the “beginners errors”.  But ultimatley you will be caring for your pet a long time as snakes are long lived. So assess want you want from a snake and get a species that should fit in to this…eg)  Is it important you can handle the snake? Do you mind if they may be bitey as hatchlings? Do you mind if they are known for defensive behaviours? Do you mind if you never see them in the enclosure because they burrow or are nocturnal ? Do you want to be able to observe your snake during the day?

Once you have an idea of your wants and importantly your limitations when it comes to space and money,

3)  look into species that fits your wants and will thrive on your budget in the space you can provide. For a first snake I would probably advise to stay away from species that have reputations for being very hard to feed or fragile in captivity (or any very big/giant snakes). But as said above snakes live a long time! Find a species you are excited about keeping.

4) When you decide on your species, find a good reputable breeder with healthy animals.

**- don’t bring it home until you have the equipment and set up all ready for it-**

Ask people that own the species you are interested in about good breeders, look for reviews on breeders, join species specific face book groups, ask questions about husbandry.  If the species you want is very common in the pet trade you might also consider adopting from a reputable reptile rescue center. Just speak to them and make sure you are getting a healthy animal thats an established feeder as your first snake. Many reptiles do just find their way into rescue by circumstance they are not always problem animals in poor health. Consider if you want a hatchling or an adult. Adults will generally be less fragile to care for and should have an established temperament which is an advantage.

5) Enclosure design! Gosh you will so much conflicting things on enclosure design. “ Too much space is scary for snakes (myth)”   “Tubs are fine forever for x species (they are usually not)” “ All you need is kitchen roll and a water dish and just plug in a heat mat! (no. It’s not that simple and you will always need a thermostat too despite what some keepers may say!)”

It can be a bit of a mine field of misinformation, especially for people new to snake keeping. Assuming you want your pet to have the best quality of life possible that you can provide - look for tips, advice and inspiration from keepers who’s priority is the same!  (That is often not the large scale for profit breeders that advocate bare minimum husbandry.)

Look at the natural history and behavioural ecology of the snake you decide on. Does it climb? burrow? bask in the sun? Spend lots of time in water? Is it a very secretive species? How does it hunt: activley or with sit and wait ambush tactics?  Does it come for dry habitat or humid habitats? What kind of micro-climates would it make use of ? Make sure your enclosure provides a comfortable and stimulating environment which allows your animal to express it’s natural behaviours and offers it a variety of choices.  Good enclousure design promotes both mental and physical well-being.  You can read more about why that is so important in this post here:

or other bits and pieces in my “ animal welfare” tag

Don’t get caught up with just meeting the minimum, go for the best practice!

Also, worth noting that good enclosure deisgn makes snake keeping soooo much easier. You don’t need to be battling to keep temps and humidity right in a fish tank with a screen lid and a red heat bulb (avoid the hell out of those red bulbs btw).. It adds an unnecessary complication to deal with as a beginner and won’t facilitate good conditions for the snake. (Not to say tanks are always bad for everything of course, they aren’t and can be modified to make good enclosures).  Generally if its your first time setting up an enclosure you will be better off with either a big tub (with the understanding that depending on the tub size and the snake it will outgrow this), plastic caging or a properly sealed wood enclosure.  Some pro’s and con’s in this post here

 @teleos  post below is also a good starting point for basic enclosure equipment and costs;

Learn the difference bettween ambient heat and surface basking temperatures , (shown nicely in this guide by  @wheremyscalesslither )

Look to understand how this relates to different kinds of heat sources such as using conductive heat sources (heat mats) for basking temps or radiant heat sources ( ceramic heaters, bulbs, radiant heat panels) which can create both basking surfaces and raise ambient temperatures.  The way you heat an enclosure will affect the choices for thermoregulation avalible to the animal and thus how they utilise the space avalible. Shown really nicely by @skies-of-salt pics here.

Learn the basics of how relative humidity (RH) works. (ie warmer air holds more water vapour than cooler air). An enclosure with an RH of 70% at a cooler temp is not the same as an enclosure with a RH 70% at a warmer temp…Thus a snake that needs humid conditions may shed well and remain hydrated in the warmer  one and yet shed poorly and become dehydrated in the other despite the owners reporting their humidity is the same.

look at the different types of thermostats availble and which one is most appropriate for your set up and heat source ( on/ off stats,  pulse proportional stats or dimming thermostats).

You can look into lighting, which is an often overlooked component of enclosure design when it comes to snake care in particular.

This might all sound like i’m overcomplicating things but honestly it will make choosing equipment for your species and personal circumstances easier, and you might be able to stop and question misinformation like  “lights suck moisture out the air”  if you understand those basics. For me, enclosure design is one of the most rewarding and interesting parts of snake keeping!

6) As a final note : When you have one snake you might well want more!

If I could go back and tell my past self anything about snake keeping it would be not get carried away with getting the animals I want to own too soon… Set yourself a maximum number of animals you can house according to “best practice” with the space you have and stick to it.

In all honesty I got slightly swept up in the metric tonne of myths about small enclosures being “ just fine” myself when I first got in to snake keeping.  My snakes current housing is ok but its not as good as I would like it to be…I have plans for big enclosures for all my snakes but maybe if I was to start over I’d have done things differently and have fewer snakes  but get them in their final big enclosures sooner…ya live and learn.

Good luck with your research.

I'm really sad about something I don't understand and was hoping you could explain. Why do people block without giving a reason to? I don't why it first seems like it's all going so well then the next you're blocked and you don't know why or what you did or said wrong? It's happened twice now and to say it hurts is an understatement.

Oh, my precious Kabby babies.  Circle up, it’s time for some firm but gentle life advice from Mom.

First of all, unless I personally am the person who blocked you (which I’m obviously not since we’re having this conversation!), in a very real sense the short answer to this question is that you know I can’t actually answer this question.  You’re asking me to tell you why a person I don’t know did a thing for which I have no context, and for which there could be a thousand reasons. So in a concrete, specific sense, my answer is: I do not know.

(You knew there was going to be a however.)

Social media is a deeply personal avenue for self-expression and it’s also a world where many of us spend a great deal of our time, which means that we have the full and free right to customize it into exactly what we want it to be.  The things that you post are personal reflections of you, which is  why it bums you out when someone mutes or blocks or doesn’t follow back; it feels on some level like a personal rejection.  But the space you curate is also a personal reflection of you.  You have the right to post anything you want and other people have the right to choose not to see it.  Both of those rights are equal, even though you’re only on one side so naturally the other one feels like it’s in some way “wrong.”

I’m speaking with zero context for what your preexisting relationship with these people was beforehand (like obviously if it was a close friend and they blocked you out of nowhere, you’re going to have to sort that out with them directly, I can’t advise you there), but it’s important to remember that there may be no “right” and wrong” in this scenario.  It’s fully possible for both of these things to peacefully coexist at the same time:

1) your absolute right to feel a little bit rejected and hurt that a stranger on the internet made the choice that they didn’t want your social media sphere to overlap with their social media sphere,

2) that other person’s absolute right to say “if something or someone makes me feel even the tiniest bit ‘nope’ I am purging it out of this space so it is exactly what I want and need it to be.”

They don’t need to have a reason.  That sucks, when you’re on the receiving end of it, which all of us have been - it truly and genuinely sucks - but it’s also reality.  One of the hard truths that incidents like this make us sometimes have to face - and we don’t want to face these things, because they can feel really icky and vulnerable and ping all the little gremlins in our brain  - is this:

nobody on the internet owes you their time or attention for anything you do or say.

This sounds mean and brutal, and I don’t mean it to be, because you know mom loves you, but it’s incredibly important, so I’m going to say it again to make sure that if nothing else, this gets through:

nobody on the internet owes you their time or attention for anything you do or say.

The celebs you stan don’t owe you a response to your tweet, just because you want one.  The people you tag in meta don’t owe you reblogging it to continue having that conversation with you forever, just because you want to prove you’re right.  The fans of the fic you write for your most popular ship don’t owe you crossing over to give you hits on your rare-pair fic if they don’t feel like it.  Nobody owes you a certain number of followers, nobody owes you a response to every anon you send them, nobody owes you finishing that fic you like in time for them to read it when they feel like reading it.  We owe each other one thing and one thing only: basic human decency.  That’s it.  Everything else is freely offered to the world, and freely taken by the people who want it.  It’s not a transactional exchange.  If you make art or write fic and you put it out there into the world, you’ve done a cool thing, and whether it gets ten hits or thousands it was still worth doing.  There will be people who aren’t interested, but if you get hung up on feeling rejected by that, it will paralyze you.

Social media is personal. That’s unavoidable.  It’s an extension of ourselves.  When someone is cruel to you or to one of your friends on the internet, even if it’s an anonymous stranger, it feels shitty.  When you express an opinion about something and a ton of people reblog it and the tags are full of “OMG YES THISSSSS”, it feels great.  We all experience that in different ways.  Society has always selected arbitrary measures for young girls and women to live up to in order to feel like they’re popular or they’re approved by the cool kids, and right now it’s things like “how many followers do you have” and “did you get an RT from a celebrity” and “how many likes on your posts”.  So on a primal level, maybe having someone you thought was a friend block you on Twitter or Tumblr hits you in the same deep core place as having the cool kids not come to your birthday party.  That feeling is super real!  It brings up alllllll that deep stuff we try to hide and pretend that we’re above experiencing, but we all have those squishy vulnerable inner selves that just need the cool kids to like us and we feel bad when they don’t.

I had this exact conversation with my therapist a few weeks ago when she was giving me a hard time because my book has 60 reviews on Amazon, of which like the majority are 5 stars with two negative ones, and I have both the negative ones like memorized.  And she was like “CLAIRE.  WHAT THE HELL.  WHY DO YOU DO THIS?  58 POSITIVE AND YOU CANNOT QUOTE A SINGLE ONE.  TWO SHITTY ONES AND YOU KNOW THEM VERBATIM.  THAT IS NOT HEALTHY BEHAVIOR.”  And I was like “… . okay fine when you put it that way, yes I do sound like a crazy person.”  So like my advice to you – advice which I have just proven I am absolute garbage at taking myself, so like I may have just eroded my own credibility in my efforts to help – is to remember that you probably have a lot more than two followers so honestly this is probably not a bad collective ratio, and there may be lots of people who are very interested in what you have to say but you’ve focused a lot of your energy on these two people and it’s worth giving some thought as to why that is.

My question for you is this: what is the net negative impact of having these two people block you on social media? Like in an actual, concrete way, separate from those sort of core gut “I feel unloved in this moment” feelings, what is the effect on your life?  You might be surprised.  It might be zero.  In which case, let yourself feel those feelings, experience them as valid, and then breathe through them and move on and keep on doin’ you.

I’m pushing back on you a little bit here very gently because it feels, reading this anon, like you’ve made a determination of hurtful intent on the part of the person who blocked you, or at the very least a certainty that this choice that made was about you and not about them.  That the fact that things seemed to be going fine and then they blocked you means you were somehow intentionally misled or mistreated.  Be really, really, really careful about deciding the cool girl didn’t come to your birthday party because she’s a bitch who wanted to make you feel terrible and is sitting somewhere cackling at the thought of your sad lil’ face waiting by the front door; maybe she didn’t come to your birthday party because she has depression and it’s hard for her to leave the house sometimes and she knew your party would be loud and wild and crazy and too much for her brain to handle right now. Be careful about presuming negative intent with no proof it exists.  The internet makes this so easy, the internet conditions us for this, and it conditions us to respond in kind. The worst thing you could do here is to, like, make a callout post or subtweet in the hopes that it will get back to them and they’ll feel bad, or to sic your other followers onto them, because that turns this into a situation that really does have a right and wrong; and since you don’t know if they were trying to make you feel shitty, or just went on a big block/mute purge to whittle their list down for mental health reasons that are totally their own, once things escalate you can’t put the horse back in the barn. It’s too late.  Now it’s A Thing, when maybe it never really needed to be A Thing.  And in almost all situations for almost all people in almost all ways, Kabby Mom’s advice is going to be, “please think carefully before you make this A Thing.”

This got long, I’ve been having a lot of thoughts lately about the conversations I’m always having with fandom folks the way we let social media permeate and shape our sense of self, in good ways and bad, so I apologize for my verbosity but also not really because that’s how things roll over in Kabby Mom’s Advice Corner.  But I will sum up in bullet points for those of you who have been skimming, to bring you up to speed:

  1. Everyone has the right to curate their own social media space however they see fit, and they don’t have to explain their reasons.
  2. They aren’t obligated to include you in that space even if you want them to.
  3. None of that is an objective measure of your worth as a person or a sign that you should stop being you on the internet.
  4. Your feelings of rejection come from a real place and you get to feel them, as long as
  5. You are striving to move through them without permitting them to paralyze you, and finally
  6. You never use someone else’s choice to curate their social media sphere as a justification for treating them like crap.

Focus on your positive interactions instead of negative ones – your friends, creating stuff and putting it out into the universe – whether it be art, fic, opinions, a podcast, gifsets, crackposts, whatever – and your social media world will be a better place.

Do you have any recommendations for books or stories that talk about the faerie/seelie, etc mythology? You write such cool things about it and I don't know where to learn more!

Oh man, okay! I’m going to give you what I can tonight, and if I remember anything more when I’m awake properly in the morning I’ll reblog this post and add on.

  • WAR FOR THE OAKS WAR FOR THE OAKS. The book is by Emma Bull and it’s a huge huge influence on me for this kind of subject (and for writing in general). If you even think you might want to read about a woman starting a rock band and getting wrapped up in a Faerie war, read it.
  • Catherynne M. Valente’s Fairyland series, which starts with “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making”. The books are technically for younger readers, but they are lush and for all the nonsense they have the darkness and cruelty of Fairyland down too. Any series that contains the sentence “The only price in the world that matters is the one that hurts to pay” has Fairyland down.
  • “The Perilous Gard,” Elizabeth Marie Pope. Another formative book about the Good People of the Hills for me. Gorgeous and shivery and romantic, and an excellent Tam Lin adaptation, in many ways.
  • Speaking of which: Tam Lin adaptations! Find a version of the ballad that you like, or skip directly to the book retellings. I can particularly recommend Pamela Dean’s “Tam Lin” and Diana Wynne-Jones’s “Fire and Hemlock.”
  • Terry Pratchett’s “Lords and Ladies” and also his “Wee Free Men” have great takes on elves. Particularly, Lords and Ladies contains this quote, which frequently informs my characterization (though not always, I think summarily calling them “bad” isn’t very interesting).
  • I’m not all that fond anymore, but in high school I was very into Holly Black’s “Tithe” and its companion novels, and again, it probably informed how I build those worlds.
  • There are such good tumblr posts about it! So I can’t discount my myths legends fairy tales tag for the odd post that may be relevant to your interests.
  • I can’t really think of movies that have the feeling I try to evoke down? Labyrinth might come closest, though it is sprinkled liberally with the 80s. But it’s very much got the be-careful-what-you-wish-for, everything-has-a-price kind of vibe I like.

That’s all I’ve got in me tonight, but it’s probably a start for you! Really, if nothing else, give “War for the Oaks” a look, it’s so good.

prompt: 25- “i told you not to fall in love with me”

chapter song: stay / rihanna and mickey echo

you are your own worst enemy. its the truth. its something that i’ve dealt with on many occasions so i know its true. self sabotage is my main game. i can never let myself feel even an ounce of happiness. the only person who made me feel happy was archie.

archie was always different. i understand that it sounds very cliche, but its the truth. he made me feel different. warmth oozed from my heart everytime we locked eyes. i knew he had feelings for me but i wasn’t aware how much he felt for me. he loved me so much, but i couldn’t hurt archie.

riverdale. apple pie america. my hometown. im y/n sweetwater. yes like the murder river. that river was named after my great great grandfather, kenneth sweetwater. making me by all intents and purposes, riverdale royalty. this came with a stigma. my family was always under a microscope. my mother, heather, was so beautiful. she was a golden girl, gorgeous and talented. everywhere i go people always say its like seeing heathers ghost.

its haunting. she died when i was four. my dad was left alone, a 22year old single dad. he was heartbroken, but i was always treasured by him.he loves me more than anything, im all that he has left of her. my parents had real love. the kinf of love that warrents a slow ballad, kissing under the soft moonlght. sneaky rendezvous’ at sweetwater river at midnight. true love.

“earth to sweetwater..” kevin moans as we stroll along the main street, sipping on sweet tea.

“whats up?” i mumble softly, playing with the ice in my cup.

“its like talking to a brick wall.” he teasted, bumping his shoulder on mine.

“im sorry k, im just a little pre-occupied.” i admit.

“oh yeah, the dilf is bringing his new fling to dinner tonight huh.” kevin grimaced, making a scrunched up face.

“bite me.” i mouthed.

“there’s the sheriff, im out babe.” he smiled.

“pray for me?” i plead.

“you’ll be okay, we can spill the tea tomorrow.” he declared.

and with that he was off. with a pep in his step, smile on his face. unlike me, i looked like pure shit and i felt like i was gonna pass out.

i open the front door to my house, trying to be as quiet as possible so i can go and change my shirt. i spilt iced tea all over myself and i wanted to look somehwat decent before meeting my dads new possible love interest. like many things in my life, this didn’t go to plan.

as i entered the dining room, i see my dad facing this beautiful woman. She looks like she just stepped off of a catwalk.

“hey honey.’ my dad smiles.

“yeah just showing my face, got home safe and sound.” i said smiling at the mystery chick.

“gina this is y/n, y/n this is gina.” my dad awkwardly introduces the two of us.

she looks over at me and smiles.

“um dad, i need to run to archies real quick and take him..the maths text book i borrowed.” that was a lie. this situation is too awkward so i have to bounce.

“okay, just dont stay out too late.” he warned.

“i wont, toodles gina, it was nice meeting you.” i blurt as i leave the cringey date scene in my dining room.

as i rush out of the house and get into my car, i remember that archie and jughead had said in passing that they would be at pops’ tonight obsessing over jasons death as per usual. off to the well lit diner in the middle of town.

as i pull up i see the red haired boy leaving.

“hey! where are you going?” i shout out of my car window, almost giving the tall boy a hear attack.

“what the fuck y/n?!?” he exlaims, rubbing his chest in circular motions.

“where are you going?” curiosity fills the air.

“home.” he answers shortly. coldness overiding his tone. i could tell there was something bothering him.

“whats up your ass?” i commented under my breath.

all of a sudden, archie storms over to the passenger door of my car, swinning the door open and almost instantly afterwards he slams it again.

he is now sitting in the seat, his head in his palms.

“you’re driving me fucking crazy.” he whispers.

“i told you not to fall in love with me.” i warned, bordering on the verge of tears.

“you’re saying it like i can help how i feel about you!” he snapped back at me.

“you can, you can go and be with someone else. someone who will make you happy. someone who is worth your affection. im not that girl.” i reply.

“do you love me?” he aksed.

“its not that simple archie..” i pronounced.

“answer the question.” he ordered, tears in his waterline. his big brown eyes filled with hurt.

“no.” the second lie filled the car like a toxic spill.

i heard an audible heart break. its like someone viciously ripping a piece of paper. hard, loud and sharp. what have i done?

i was cutr out of my gaze into space by the car door slamming shut. the red haired boy walking along the icy car park. the love of my life. the love that i’ve just alienated.

Hey remember the celebrity au?  I inexplicably wrote more.

Obi-Wan honestly hadn’t expected anything to come out of the number he had impulsively scribbled in Chetki. As Anakin was so fond of pointing out, he had been out of the dating game long enough he was a bit rusty on judging someone’s interest.

(“Dating game?” Anakin said, eyeing him from where he was ostensibly sorting through the books students were trying to unload at the end of the term. “How old are you? I mean, I know how old you are, but seriously, how are you so old?”)

He expected even less when a cursory Google search, which in actuality was Anakin snatching his phone from his hand and muttering unkind things under his breath about Obi-Wan’s relationship with technology before tossing it back at his head, revealed Rex was indeed an actor with quite a few well received movies under his belt. There was also a wealth of image results, and Obi-Wan found his attention caught by a photo of Rex on a beach, shirtless, drops of water beaded along the breadth of his shoulders. The photographer had a gift for lighting.

“Oh god,” Anakin groaned from behind a stack of textbooks, “are you still staring at that pic?”

“No.” He shoved his phone back into his pocket before taking the top third of the stack, revealing Anakin’s disbelieving eyebrows.

I don't know anyone that i can talk about this with that would understand or have any answers.. so here I am on your blog that I found via poly tags. anyway I think I'm in love with two people. I've been in a monogamous relationship for almost 3 years now and I have been recently questioning if I'm poly. I've loved multiple people at a time in the past, and its happening again. I cannot picture my girlfriend w/ anyone else unless that person is with me too. Is that still poly? idk what i am. TIA

Hi! Thanks for reaching out! It is still poly, and that’s a natural way that many people start thinking about things. However, I encourage you to do some more thinking about different arrangements and how they might benefit people. I’m going to lay out some hypotheticals. This will be pretty blunt, but please know I’m not making assumptions about how you would actually behave, I’m only describing the ways that people sometimes unintentionally approach these things without realizing how it might cause difficulty.

If a new person had to be with both you and your girlfriend, what if someone you like (who likes you back) feels pressured to like your girlfriend too because they know that’s the only way they are allowed to be with you? Not everyone clicks with everyone, and it’s actually pretty darn rare for someone to click with both members of a pre-existing couple. Even if someone is into both you and your girlfriend, that also means both you and your girlfriend have to be into that person, too. You can see how this gets statistically less likely. Even assuming that’s true, then imagine how those relationships might develop. How would you feel if your girlfriend and the new person had a stronger connection than you had with the new person? Would you be okay with the two of them spending more time together than they spent with you? What if the new person wanted to break up with only one of you, not both? Would that get weird? Would the new person get dumped rather than get to stay with the person they still wanted to be with? It’s really important to try to put yourself in the shoes of the new person, who is often at a disadvantage when dating people who have been together for a long time. To treat someone well, try to imagine how you would feel if, say, you were a single person, and you were approached by a couple. What sort of agency would you want in your decision-making and the development of your new relationship(s)?

I don’t tell you these things to scare you or to tell you that you’re wrong for feeling what you’re feeling. Like I said, it’s incredibly common for people’s thoughts to go down that exact path you’ve described when they are first thinking about polyamory. Something that looks a little like “monogamy + 1″ makes sense to our brains that have been conditioned to think about relationships in terms of monogamy.

When you say, “I cannot picture my girlfriend w/ anyone else unless that person is with me too,” try asking yourself this: is it actually important that you are able to picture who your girlfriend is with? Could that be something that’s up to her? Do you want to be able to pursue people who aren’t interested in your girlfriend, or who she might not be interested in? If you are comfortable with non-monogamy as an idea, I encourage you to reach for the courage that would let each person determine the course of their own relationships and who they want to have those relationships with.

From what you are saying about having feelings for multiple people, it does sound like you learn towards polyamory yourself. If your girlfriend does too, it may be that she has feelings for people who you wouldn’t be interested in, or who wouldn’t be interested in you, or maybe even who aren’t a gender you’re interested in (I don’t know your gender or orientation, so that might or might not be relevant). If you decide to open your relationship, again, I encourage being open to the idea that you might each be interested in different people.

Many newly poly people picture a closed triad as their ideal. What many people don’t realize is that triads (open or closed) are actually incredibly complex. In a triad, you have 4 relationships: one between each dyad (3 couples), plus the larger triad relationship. It’s not impossible, but many people who attempt it when they very first begin polyamory end up feeling in over their heads. I won’t tell you that you shouldn’t try it, but I can warn you that it’s a lot to think about, and it’s so important to make sure you are treating everyone truly as an individual. (Check out http://www.unicorns-r-us.com/ for more info.)

In short, I strongly encourage all newly polyamorous people to try dating as individuals. You met your girlfriend as an individual, right? Even if you do someday end up in a triad (or bigger group) relationship, there is nothing to be lost from developing individual one-on-one relationships first. Most successful triads that I’ve heard of actually developed organically, even accidentally, when people just so happened to get along with their metamour (partner’s partner) – not because anyone tried to make it happen.

That was a really long answer! I hope it wasn’t overwhelming. I’m glad you’re exploring what’s important to you in relationships. I wish you luck! If you want some further reading, I highly recommend the book More Than Two and the website by the same name. And please feel free to get in touch again if you’d like to talk more.

Auntie Z, I'm kinda worried that the current shitty Cap storyline and Marvel's shitty behaviour will turn so many people away from who Steve Rogers is meant to be that the shitty neo-nazis will 'win', claiming him as theirs because people stopped fighting for him. I know he's just a character, but he's a symbol as well and I don't want them to be able to say he's theirs. Am I being stupid about this?

I will start by validating you, Non: you are not being stupid!

The thing about this awful storyline/event/whatever is that it is basically, in real life, One Year. It will end at the end of the summer, hopefully. There will be aftershocks and repercussions, but the Big Two have “turned the universe on its head” so many times that both the main DC universe and the 616 are perpetually doing cartwheels at this point.

Put it into perspective in the long term: Steve Rogers has been Captain America, Jewish golem and symbol of the American commitment to justice, for seventy-five years. One Year out of three quarters of a century of Steve being mangled to near-unrecognizable by poor editorial and writing decisions will not undo Seventy-Five Years of legacy if we don’t allow it.

This brings up a very interesting question, though, about the nature of intellectual property and who owns the canon.

In a very real, financial sense, Disney and Marvel own Captain America, and they can do whatever they want with it. However.

Consider Sherlock Holmes.

Consider The Wizard of Oz.

Any idea, or character, or fiction beautiful and needful enough to embed itself in the minds and hearts of hundreds and thousands and hundred thousands of fans eventually slips out of their unknowing hands, and becomes a shared creation that belongs as much to the audience as to the copyright holder, and this can be true of any fictional thing of any dimensions.

Consider Sailormoon.

Consider Harry Potter.

The boycott of @nickspencerly‘s ugly story seems like a shout in the dark.

ACD wanted to quit writing SH and move on. The fans were merciless. His hand was forced.

Baum wrote a great deal of his non-Ozian, non-fantasy work under a feminine pen name, because his own name was so tightly bound to that for which he was famous.

Takeuchi tried to kill the senshi at the end of every arc, and the publishers made her bring them back, because the fans clamored so loudly they could not be ignored.

Would we still remember HP as fondly if we had not had the budding internet and Rowling’s blessing for our transformative works?

Consider Homestuck.

Consider twelve entire seasons of Supernatural.

If we, the fans, love something so much that we are become incapable of being ignored, we will, however gradually, move the needle. It won’t always be in the right direction-

Consider Agent Carter.

-but we will move it nonetheless.

It may seem Sisyphean, honestly. It certainly feels it. Today a graphic of the sales for CA:SR went across my dash, and the graph went inexorably down. So far, so good. But standing across from us are the fans who want this awful garbage to continue as an “experiment,” who say that they invest more money in this franchise than we do and so their voices matter more.

Do they actually invest more money? Debatable!

I don’t spend most of my CA money on comics, because I slipped back into reading comics in 2014 after a seven year hiatus where I read nothing but manga, and the storylines since I came back have felt like one “event” after another, with far too much cross-contamination of books that made it difficult to pick up a story. From me, Disney/Marvel mostly gets merch money, and I know a lot of the fans that I associate with are the same. (They also get BP/MGDD money, but I’m not going down the digression highway tonight, I have a point to get to eventually.)

So when we, the SJ!Cap fans, say “We’re boycotting,” to be sure, sales are plummeting. But there’s no way to prove the sales are plummeting because of us, and even smaller sales are still selling. The curative fans are some of the loudest Spencer defenders, sadly, which makes it hard to tell them from the alt-right, neo-Nazi HydraCap fans. They can protest that all they like, but it looks the same from the outside. The damage done is certainly the same.

On the surface, also, there are still people in transformative fandom doing HydraCap art from their own AUs or other fandom generated properties whose enthusiasm cannot be differentiated from those supporting Spencer’s vomit. To my fellow transformative fans I would make a humble request: if you don’t support Spencer’s HydraCap, please refrain from sharing your HydraCap art until the ugly has passed as a sort of “art boycott.”

(I know full well that I can’t make artists stop doing art. I’m just an academically trained pop culture analyst- ask me about that some other time- who can point to various times when art has been influential to the culture as well as influenced by it. It’s a request, not an expectation.)

Other than boycotting, what can we do? We can write editorials explaining why this is not okay. We can create transformative works, including t-shirts and such, for ourselves that reclaim our Steve as the real Steve, and we can keep up the letter writing, telephoning, and social media deluge to let Disney know how badly Marvel Comics is hurting the Captain America brand and damaging the Captain America legacy. We can introduce the character ourselves, show who we know Steve to be, present our evidence, discredit the HydraCap faithful.

We can try to hold the line, essentially.

I’m totally with you in feeling that the fact we even have to do this at all is gross. It hurts my head, as a pop culture specialist, and it hurts my heart as a fan. #catws ruined my life is meant to be an ironic hashtag: in 2014, I found Steve Rogers again the way some people find religion. I wrote about it in my mental health tag, how I decided I can’t give up on myself because Steve would never give up on Bucky. Steve has been my mental health recovery inspiration, and Spencer and his cadre of tasteless, vile Dementors can pry him from my fat little cold dead hands. Until I’m on the conveyor belt for the crematorium and they’ve snapped my fingers off with their Hydra-insignia stamped crowbars, I’m gonna plant myself like a tree beside the river of truth and keep spreading the story of who and what Jack Kirby and Joe Simon meant Steve Rogers and Captain America to be, and I invite you to do the same.

They can’t uproot us all. Fuck ‘em.

kiwithewitch-blog  asked:

I am so excited to have found your blog! I don't know why, but since I was a kid I've had a special fondness for gargoyles! It's a special term for me and now I'm elated that there's magic to them! Where do I start?!

Well that depends on what you want to do.

There are plenty of ideas out there for spells that are gargoyle-themed, and ways to give your craft a gargoyle “flavor” of sorts. This is good for people who like the imagery and symbolism of a gargoyle but aren’t interested in hosting spirits/entities/etc. The book Gargoyles by Susan Moonwriter Pesznecker is a good source for gargoyle magic. The book details all sorts of history, types, and theories on gargoyles, and also provides meditations, spells, and ways to incorporate them into many aspects of witchcraft. For instance, there are examples of how gargoyles of certain looks can be used to represent the elements. I would love to get a small gargoyle statue to represent fire, and another for air, and so on for my altar instead of my simple jars I have now.

Protection magic is well suited to gargoyle imagery and/or spirits – warding areas, looking after people/pets (look at some of these adorable pet-based gargoyle statues and imagine them being placed on an altar or being used in a spell for protecting pets!), protecting your assets/money, etc. I have a gargoyle spirits that keeps my car from attracting attention, and reminds the driver to keep an eye on the gas tank, and deters accidents. According to my roommate, he also has gotten possessive of the coins that get left in the car, though. I’ve also found them to be rather good at warding off fae acticity.

Aside from protection, they (as spirits or as imagery in a spell) can be useful eyes to have around the place. They may be used in a spell to discover the truth about a shady person or to keep mischievous children behaving, maybe (hadn’t thought of that until just now and now I need to try it!).

Then there is the path of actually hiring them.

If you do any kind of spirit work already I would ask around to see if your spirits 1) know any trustworthy gargoyles for hire or are willing to help you sort through applicants or 2) wouldn’t mind taking on the form and function of a gargoyle. Of course, always be extra careful and skeptical when working with spirits, especially if you are inviting new ones in. It’s not to be done lightly.

Here in my gargoyles 101 tag I have a few posts about what life is like with mine, as well as other gargoyle-themed asks (this conversation will appear in there too for safe keeping!). I work with them as hired bodyguards and task-doers, basically. I don’t worship them, and I generally don’t go to them for life advice. Not much of my magic yet is done with their help (hell, not even all of my protection magic is) and I tend to only call them out for the big things so far. I’m working to include them more often so that I learn how to communicate with them better and to keep them from getting bored and finding trouble.

Whatever you associate gargoyles with can be your inspiration for gargoyle magic, so start there. What is a gargoyle to you, and what is a gargoyle not? Then be creative as you want to be! Let me know what ideas you come up with!

Hiring or creating actual spirits is a bit more complicated, but information can be found in my gargoyle tag, I think. Or look into the terms “egregore,” “fetch,” and “construct.”

Thanks for the question and I hope this helps!

edit: whoops! forgot to link the book at first. There is is.

What's your opinion on Karen Page? AJAKSKKSKS

I have some random half formed opinions on Karen, and the Daredevil narrative for her in general. And maybe how the defenders writing didn’t really mesh with how she’d been portrayed before, and if it did, then it showed her in a vaguely hypocritical light.

Also, she’s a legit straight up murderer and it’s kind of vaguely hilarious in an ironic way that she now works for a living digging up other peoples dirt, because she honestly wants to see justice done. She’s not somebody who wakes up in the morning thinking something malevolent, she’s by all accounts, somebody who has aspirations of goodness. Her moral grayness her so much more interesting in that light, tbh.

(but, like, honestly, I neither like nor dislike Karen, she doesn’t particularly grab me but i don’t you know, hate her or anything, i’m just personally not captivated).

Anyway, I’ve been listening to a podcast lately hosted by 2 bona fide behavioural analysts (jim clemente and Laura Richards) and honestly, hearing them talk about it, while simultaneously watching S2 of Daredevil, was thought provoking.

We know that Karen murdered a man, afterwards she was traumatized by his actions (the kidnapping and threats against her) and that she was even more traumatized by her own actions, she just gunned him down, The End. The show could have painted this in a number of ways, but imo it clearly painted this as a murder, to be honest. I mean, he was victimising her at the time, but this shock killing was not narratively described as a valiant bid for freedom where a woman shoots herself out of a hostage situation. It’s painted as Karen shooting him, and her being left alone in a room with a gun and a blood soaked body.

She’s terrified she’d get found out. I haven’t seen that season for a long time now, but also, i think it’s relevant that a chunk of her fear after this was fear about what Fisk would do if he found out she did it, and for her own safety thereafter, rather than the action of killing a man.

In that light, fashforward to season 2 and the intro of Frank Castle. Karen is the character in the entire show who is the most okay with Frank. She sees Frank’s honour code and understands it, she isn’t afraid of him harming her despite him being genuinely terrifying. She also isn’t nearly as bothered by his methodology as the others. Frank believes killing the wrongdoers is the apt solution to Hell’s Kitchen’s problems (and anywhere, really).

It’s interesting, because, throughout the whole time Nelson and murdock are defending Castle, she is trying to convince Matt and Foggy of the merits to his actions. She’s trying to justify it. This is why I mentioned the podcast, because in it, they explain that people who have thoughts and feelings that are generally considered by society to be abhorrent or wrong (and i mean, actual fucked up things, not shitty bigotry) they will attempt to find the same behaviour in others they trust and respect, to prove to themselves that they’re not Bad™.

Karen, with both Foggy and Matt, the two she is closest to in Hell’s Kitchen (in the world really), BOTH get this line of questioning from her, where she tries to get them to admit that hey! maybe killing bad people is okay and fine. This, to me, seems that Karen is looking for some kind of absolution. Not the kind where she denounces what she did, or what Frank did, but the kind where others prove her ‘correct’ and absolve her of her sins by justifying them. The kind where she doesn’t have to feel bad or be in trouble for her actions.

In the end, Matt and Foggy, having no clue all the while that this is personal to her, brush off every justification she gives, both of them basically going ‘what the hell! no! bad!’. Because while matt is a vigilante, he’s also one who does not approve of being judge jury and executioner. Foggy was even less likely than Matt to play part to that line of thinking, because he thinks Matt goes too far, let alone Castle. Them doing this, rejecting her without even knowing it, leads Karen smack into the figurative arms of Frank Castli, who is obviously intimidating to her, and goes too far in her eyes, and freaks her out, but he’s the  one she’s most in tune with. Her philosophy is far closer to his than it is to Matt and Foggy. Frank even says it himself, he knows she’d have taken the shot, she means business, even if it’s lethal.

I have no idea what to say about Karen and Matt. Narratively it’s never made sense to me, and i honestly thought that her reaction in the defenders to him needed a hell of a lot of background filling out between daredevil s2 & this show to make sense. It needed background we weren’t given, but Karen’s /always/ been pro daredevil, we needed a filler to tell us what happened in that gap of time to cause her to treat matt’s vigilantism as an addiction. Foggy, Foggy it made perfect sense because there was background, with Karen who had always been pro devil, it needed explaining. As it is, it kind of came across as Karen being pro vigilante as long as it’s not her friend, which is kind of harsh? It can ruin somebody else’s life but not somebody who i like? Which they could have done, but i’ve also never really thought of karen as selfish in that type of sense, either.

But, honestly, i feel like the main facet of Karen’s character, her absolute defining trait, is curiosity.

Karen’s curiosity knows no bounds, and i mean that. No bounds. Karen got into trouble in the first place in episode one because she saw something and didn’t let it go (she continues to not let it go the whole season, even when she’s warned, even when it’s dangerous, through everything). It’s interesting, because Karen’s curiosity doesn’t appear to have much more ground  than wanting to know things, she’s a Ravenclaw type, you know? Her curiosity isn’t really tied to morality, or special interest, he is just curious.

Unfortunately, her curiosity isn’t necessarily tempered by a hell of a lot of forethought. She drags Ben to a nursing home because she dug something up, and when i say drag, i mean lies and tricks!!! Ben there with her, being pretty damn underhand tbh, i mean, it was low. And then Ben’s name ends up in the log book and then because of that, Ben is murdered.

That was an example of Karen being driven by her curiosity, bullheaded, and not thinking it though. In S2, the person she gets in trouble at the end of the season is herself. She does it again. Curiosity with no heed to consequence. She is merely lucky Frank saved her.

I mean, narratively, Karen ending up a reporter is perfect for her as a person, i’m not surprised we ended up there. She is bullheadedly curious, she is tough as nails (hello that kidnapping by the hand), and will legit do any dangerous thing to get her story. She also is curious for curiosity’s sake, so her boss doesn’t really run the risk of her only researching one thing or causing a moral shitstorm.

I’ve never really seen the show as portraying Karen as a moral goodness or whatever cliches come with the blonde noncombatant tropes in these types of stories, to me, Karen’s never really been the goodness personified in the show. To me, that is Foggy. I like it, to be honest, because lets be real, the blonde haired blue eyed ~angelic looking woman, not being the epitome of goodness???

I wouldn’t call Karen moral, i would call Karen curious, with aspirations of goodness. She wants to be a good person, but she’s thoughtless and chaotic and sometimes just kind of… amoral. No other real way to put it. I’ve also never really seen the  show as portraying her as the goodness centre, i mean, i can see how the other characters would think it about her, but the audience? We know more about her than them.

Foggy and Matt don’t know she killed somebody. Her boss doesn’t know that. The stuff with Ben? that’s for us to know, too. We’re the keepers of Karen’s secrets, not the other characters. As such, the way they treat her as special and good in the show doesn’t bug me too much, from their pov, it probably looks that way, it’d annoy me if she got a good job and the show tried to tell me it’s because she’s a ~good~ person and deserved it, but imo, the show has not done that.

Her ~aspirations of goodness are all the more interesting, imo, because she does not appear to have them as some kind of attempt at penance. That would make it redemption, or an attempt at it. She’s not trying to redeem herself.

tldr, , i think Karen is curious, chaotic, wants so hard to be good, but finds herself coming up short and is scared of it. I also think the only person in the universe who accurately has her number is Frank. And also, that even if Matt’s vigilantism hadn’t destroyed their personal relationship, that in the end, the total polar opposite creeds they both have would have done the same thing in the end.

Psycho-Pass Official Profiling 2: Interviews

Here’s all the interviews from the Official Profiling 2 book. (Well, except for the ones with Ling Toshite Shigure, Chelly from EGOIST, and Yugo Kanno. Aka the ones in charge of the music. Sorry about that.) They include the following:

  • Staff – General Director – Motohiro Katsuyuki
  • Cast – Hanazawa Kana (Akane), Fujiwara Keiji (Tougane), Kimura Ryohei (Kamui)
  • Cast – Hanazawa Kana (Akane), Seki Tomokazu (Kougami)
  • Staff – original story concept & screenplay – Urobuchi Gen; 2nd season structure – Ubukata Tow
  • Staff – Director – Shiotani Naoyoshi

Under the cut are a lot of words (almost 13k), but here are the takeaways:

  • Like I theorized way back, Psycho-Pass is not a series with a fixed start-end plot, but a sandbox where only certain elements of the world and certain characters are set in stone. Thus new writers, etc can come in and play with the pieces every single time. Even the staff’s all “there are so many side stories and spinoffs that we’ll leave it up to you to figure out canon” from them.

  • The movie was thought up, planned, and put into production before they ever considered season two. I repeat, the movie was always the priority, and the gears started moving right when they finished s1.
  • Apocalypse Now was a huge inspiration for the movie.
  • Everyone (cast, staff) agrees that if a certain character had been there in s2, the case would have been wrapped up right away and there would have been no s2. (So unbelievably true, but grrrrrr)

  • Shimotsuki Mika is beloved by the staff for the exact same reason that fans dislike her (“she’s what Sibyl thinks a true Inspector is”).
  • Hinakawa was always made to be a foil to other characters (poor boy).

  • If you didn’t know, many of the important staff figures spent a lot of their careers on live action, crime series, etc, and really love Western scifi/crime/etc media, which is one of the reasons why PP feels so different from a typical anime you see nowadays.
  • The recording cast left an empty chair in the studio for you know who during s2, and HanaKana basically said at one point, “Please come back already!”
  • And if nothing else, read the two cast interviews!

Spoilers for s2 and the movie, obviously, under the cut.

Ten minute prompt: Rose and Ten go to a parallel universe where DW is a tv show, they read fanfiction about them

This basically developed into a one-shot instead of a ten minute prompt… Hope you enjoy!

“This can’t be right,” the Doctor said, his voice muffled from the screwdriver that was currently being held between his teeth.

One of his hands was toying with something on the top of the console and the other was furiously typing on a keyboard of some sort while he stared at a monitor.

Rose frowned and stepped up behind him to stare at the screen. The writing was in some sort of circular language that she’d seen before but couldn’t read so she just licked her lips in concern. “What’s wrong?”

He ran a hand through his hair and spoke again, this time causing the screwdriver to clatter to the grating, but he didn’t even seem to notice. “She’s saying we’re in a parallel universe. But that’s not remotely possible.”

Guys, I really need to get this off my chest.  First of all, Bamon fans , i love you all, but if you're a steroline fan, please don't read this.

I come here tonight because I just need to vent a little about some things in this show, things that honestly make no sense to me First of all, before i get into that. Why must so many people post about Steroline in the Bamon Tag. I hate Stefan and Caroline as a romantic pairing.  I dont wanna see it. I love them, as friends, as my BROTP and the reason why i don’t ship them is quite simple. Caroline has had more love interests than anyone.. I am tired of her being the character that has to always be with someone, or have a connection with someone. Stefan and Caroline, in my opinion, should remain as friends. Part of me feels the writers are doing everything in their power to amp them up, just to make Delena more believable.   Every chance the writers get they downplay Stelena, like it was a passing crush, a summer affair, and when they do that, they make Both stefan and Elena move further from eachother. I can’t help it, that I am a Stelena fan, and a Bamon fan. But I cant see Caroline with Stefan, I just can’t. In my eyes, Liz had to die for Steroline and Delena to happen. How messed up is that? The writers kill off Carolines mom, so Elena can realize how short life is ( even they are vampires and dont die easily.) and use cares moms as a crutch to get back with Damon. And stefan was so clear he saw Caroline as only a friend and all of a sudden, the mom gets sick and he does a 180 and loves her? It doesn’t make sense, but i digress.

Now to the Bamon, no ship has ever been so worked up, so foreshadowed, so evident in any show I have ever seen. It is clear that Bonnie and Damon are both in love with each other,  it has been clear for such a long time now,  every episode we see the emotional tether they have to each other. They are connected in ways that they have never connected to another person. We’ve seen Bonnie get her magic back to save him, we’ve seen her come back after endless fights, we’ve seen Damon stepping up to defend her, choosing her over everyone, telling Elena to her face that Bonnie was the reason he was doing everything. There is friendship and there is friendship that is so precious it borders the line to something more, Bamon are there now. They are on the precipice of something amazing. and every episode we get hints, signs, that Bamon is happening soon.  it;s little things the writers add in. Like we are supposed to sit and believe that Bamon watched the bodyguard, watched a endless, INTERRACIAL love story and no sexy thoughts went through their heads?  Then they made a death pact , they vowed to die together, like some tragic romeo and juliet shit . We were baited with hope for Bamon and we still are , and every time i think we get one up there comes another “EPIC” Delena kiss. I can’t even stomach it anymore. Delena , in every episode has to have that one kiss with the slow , or fast ( depending on julieplagues mood ) epic love song playing, AFTER Elaine gives some speech about how they gotta be together. Like we get the point , Gilbert, we got it the last 1234 times you said that to Damon. And Elena, all she ever does is make everything about her. Damon was drinking cause he was sad his BEST FRIEND was about to kill herself and Eleanor is crying, wondering if she changed by being a vampire and crying over herself and Damon. Like give me a break. I never seen a more unlikable character in my life. Like  I dont know what makes me more angry, the fact that the writers have untapped potential in Bamon and ignore it for Dullena to be cannon, That the writers are constantly re-writing history to make it into that Elena and Stefan weren’t even that big a deal . uh hello ”  The vampire diaries is stefan and Elenas love story” kevin williamson said that. when it started, So even if it’s not their love story anymore. It sure as hell was. But of course, it’s always Damon , right . She NEVER found her way back to Stefan right? Bullfucking shit. Elexa is the biggest hypocrite ever written. Its at the point i dont hate the characters, i hate the writers for being so stupid and forcing a ship that obviously is dead, I always hated Delena, it always sucked, but now, the awkwardness from watching Ian and Nina act its too much to bare. it’s like they dont even wanna look at each other, they have zero chemistry anymore, and we can sense it. Just, let it go already, please . But i think what i hate the most is the shitfest Bonnie has been given and i can’t believe I am about to say this but i really fucking think she gets shited on cause shes a woman of color. her only love interest was Jerome ( who no one wants ), and then any other love interest she could have , was her own ethnicity.( jamie, Luka if thats his name?)  AND I NEVER WANTED TO SAY THAT OUT LOUD. but what is the reason for Bonnie not being with Damon. why is she always crapped on. It makes me mad, it makes me pissed. It hurts me and i hate that it hurts me. Elena and Caroline, they get multiple love interests, they get nice things, Bonnie gets not invited to balls, and shoved in a hole of 1994.  they separated Bamons so early. Judith is just a racist bitch .  Yes im sayng that. I hope she proves me wrong. I really do.  because Bamon HAS TO HAPPEN. give me one reason why every ship from the books happened excpet Bamon?  I wanna gag whenever i see Delena, i wanna put leggos on Julies bedroom floor so she hurts her feets. I am ranting so vividlty about this, it makes my skin crawl.

positivelypersistentteach  asked:

You've created some really valuable content on Tumblr that a lot of teachers have benefited from! My EDD question for you is, what are some topics you don't know as much about that you'd like to see on Tumblr?

First of all, thank you for saying that about the content I try to push out. It cuts to the core of what I believe as an educator, and that’s collaboration. Sharing our resources allows us to create better resources. I don’t really create a lot of worksheets per se, but I try to send out relevant and engaging websites and tools and helpful hints for teachers to use, while being a bit sarcastic on the side. I’m interested in helping and collaborating, not commanding my information passively; it means a lot to me that you would make mention of that.

Four and a half things that I would like to see more about:

Language Objectives/Bilingual Education

I do not have a bilingual education endorsement, but I have a number of students who are on the WIDA scale. For someone who does not speak Spanish it’s tough for me to even come up with the various modifications and accommodations for my assignments even with those objectives clearly presented. Many of my co-workers who speak Spanish have no trouble at all coming up with resources, but it’s tougher for me. I know that the logic of Language Objectives is that you don’t NEED to know the language to help the students succeed, and I understand that, but what is out there? What resources are out there for ESL/ELL students? I saw a post going around that had a packet of activities linked to various WIDA standards, but beyond that Bilingual Education (for whatever language, in Chicago it’s usually Spanish or Polish) never seems to get a lot of attention.

Standards Based Grading

I know that there are whole books written on this topic, but truthfully I struggle with what a day-to-day SBG classroom looks like. I understand the rubrics and I get the point scales and whatnot. How do I put an assignment that assesses multiple standards into the gradebook? Do students redo assignments on their own time or during class? How do I explain this to parents who will see a 3.1 as a 3.1/100, not out of 4? (I figure I’ll just convert the percentage, but still.) I see a lot of kick-butt resources sent around without rubrics or grading criteria at the end, and I hope that eventually everything comes with a standards-based rubric attached. I haven’t had the opportunity to go into a class and just scope out what assignments look like and what grade reports look like, so anything on SBG I would LOVE if people were discussing more.

Social/Emotional Learning Standards
I say that knowing full well that often times these standards are an after-after-afterthought because of all the other content we have to cram in before testing. However, I see very little on my dash about Social/Emotional learning (save a few links about holistic education, which is a nice thought but the practicality of it in under-performing under-funded schools is questionable.) I would love to see ways that teachers incorporate those actual standards day-to-day. So often activities come off as a “one-day” sprint, not a whole-year race. This is a major place of weakness for me, as I try to have conversations and meet my students at the door, but beyond that I can’t honestly say I’ve made these SEL standards a priority.

Politicized Teaching

This is an odd subject to write about because I don’t fully know what that would look like, but sharing resources on how to support yourself in this ever-increasingly political profession. From the ground up. What if a parent fights you on a book selection? What do you do if a principal retaliates for a personal slight and tanks an observation on you? If your district gives you a pink slip with no notice, what is your recourse? If a congressman makes an inane decision in your state, how can you fight it? I don’t see that really discussed a lot in the #edchum community because I think it’s really too depressing and scary to think about.  Others have really good unions that keep them informed, others are not so lucky. This community is absolutely a place to share resources, and that’s what it should mostly be about. However, occasionally, we have to defend ourselves against political agendas or personal agendas, and some resources on handling those situations would be nice.

And a minor portion that doesn’t particularly deserve its own blurb: if you do something cool and put up a picture, INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS. It’s like an awesome looking cupcake; it makes me say ’dude that cupcake looks awesome, but I don’t even know what went into it, so I won’t bother.’ I feel like so much about WHAT we share (myself included) is about content and where to pull texts, which is crucial, but I feel like we put all this “resource gasoline” in our car but then sit there in the driveway because we don’t know how to drive stick-shift.

That all being said, I can easily say I am a better teacher, and a better person, because of this #edchum community. I cannot thank you all enough for the materials, the kind words/tags, and the humor.
