i do not own this graphic

anyway i meant to make a fancy graphic for this and I might do later but w/e w/e this is a PERMANENT STARTER CALL meaning that by liking/replying to this you’re giving me (and my anxiety that says you don’t want to rp with me) permission to make you rando starters, pop into your ask box or hit you up in memes whenever inspiration strikes me.  You can unlike this post at any time for any reason, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

Today I was chatting with a coworker who I knew had been in an abusive relationship in the past. She was laughing as she told me and another coworker about how her ex never let her leave the house. Like she was for real cracking jokes about his jealous rages and how she wasn’t allowed to so much as set foot outside their door if he wasn’t with her, and the way she was telling it was funny, so we laughed along. “That’s why I enjoy doing the little things now, like taking the bus and going to the bank,” she said, and we all giggled because who likes public transportation and doing errands, right?

Then she got serious for the first time since the conversation started, it lasted only for a few moments, but I will never forget the one sentence that she said without smiling: “I’m going to die before I let that happen to me again.”

There was also this one rape victim whom a relative of mine represented in court. The rapist’s lawyer tried to discredit her by pointing out that she’d laughed while giving her testimony. She was eighteen years old on the witness stand, telling a judge and a room full of people about what had been done to her. She giggled because she was embarrassed about having to describe the graphic sex acts, and she nearly lost her case because of that.

I have classmates who laughed while telling me about old men who stole kisses from them. Who made jokes out of stories about their boyfriends screening their messages and forcing them to do things they didn’t want to do. I have known girls who were molested and manipulated for years, who shake their heads and snicker at their own past selves, how could I have let him do that to me, I was so naive, hahaha. This one woman reenacted for me, complete with dramatic gestures and voice impersonations, how her ex-husband who was under a Temporary Restraining Order scaled the gate of her house with a gun, and how she’d locked herself in her bedroom and screamed at the police over the phone to come NOW. Both of us were in stitches at the end of her tale, clutching our stomachs in mirth.

Just because they laugh doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

We all know that Hoth was a simmering mess of hormones and stress and I would pay good money for a soap opera about them. Here are some things which Definitely Happened:

  • There’s a betting pool going on who takes Luke’s virginity. The favourites are Han and Leia, but Wedge Antilles has pretty good odds, and there’s a small contingent of aliens who are convinced it will be Chewie (after all, who could resist that Wookie musk? Headcanon: most alien races consider humans soft and gross. Most alien races find Wookies absurdly attractive. Han Solo isn’t the ladykiller; Chewie is.)
  • Leia and Han scream at each other in every corner of the base. Everyone is desperate for them to fuck. They do not. The sexual tension is so thick that it could be cut into blocks and sold as wall insulation. More than once they are ‘accidentally’ locked in a supply cupboard in the vain hope that claustrophobia will act as the catalyst that enables their frustration to spark into true love – or at least nasty raunchy cupboard sex. It does not. All that happens is that the offender has legally changed their name to escape the Wrath of Organa.
  • Someone paints a shirtless Han Solo on their X Wing. Leia is furious. Han is delighted: both at the highly flattering portrait (he has an eight-pack, he is shredded) and at Leia’s fury (you’re jealous princess/no I am not/you’re jealous, hey I can pose like that for you if you –). Hoth’s winter had nothing on the chilly silence that followed that suggestion.
  • Luke and Leia both have very graphic dreams about Han Solo. Han Solo has very graphic dreams about the twins –  individually, together, he’s thirty fucking years old, why is his brain doing this to him.(Later on they will, individually, realise that due to Luke and Leia’s Force-bond they probably created a circle of Han Solo Sex Dreams: Leia had them, so Luke sensed her lust for Han which intensified his own lust for Han, which led to Luke having Han Solo sex dreams, which led to Leia lusting – and so on, and so on. For the sake of their sanity, they never share this revelation which each other.)
  • Luke is SO COLD. All the time. WHY DOES NO ONE APPRECIATE HOW COLD HE IS. He comes from a desert world. Of course he’s cold! What is all this white stuff? It was pretty for the first fve seconds but holy fucking Force it is so cold it burns and what the hell is going on with that? He bundles himself up in so many layers that he waddles rather than walks. Fearsome Last of the Jedi indeed.
  • Luke tapes a knife to a cleaning droid (disc-shaped things that swish around the base, sucking up dirt) and names it Stabby. Why, says Leia. Luke, the boy from Tatooine, shining and happy despite everything says why not. Why not indeed. Stabby is very fond of chasing Han. Han wants desperately to shoot the fucking thing– but then he sees big-eyed Luke and sharp-toothed Leia cooing over it and, well. A little bit of light stabbing is nothing, compared to those two smiling.

The Dark Knight trilogy - alternate posters! Available here

How y'all doin?! I’m not allowed to show anything I’m drawing, but I thought I’d share a fun little thing that I’m doing. I love this series called A Movie Poster a Day (google and check it out!). Anyways, it inspired me to do my own little series.

In the style of minimalist, retro/ vintage posters, I’ll find beautiful shots and imagery within the movie itself to showcase.

4 monocrome notebook icons

My first icon pack! I made these pretty monocrome, so I’ll do small customizations to them if requested (remove shadow, change color scheme, different background, etc).

Don’t claim as your own, and a credit somewhere would be appreciated (seriously I didn’t watermark these but please please don’t steal any of these)

EDIT: because these are 400x400 you’ll probably get better quality if you save them onto a laptop/computer or just take a screenshot

Learning Graphic Design On Your Own

A Quick Note…

Everyone learns differently. Some people like to ask questions in class, others like to watch videos that they can pause and replay, and even more people could prefer to just tinker and see what happens (I’m personally a tinkerer). The first thing you should do when learning on your own (so probably online or through books) is to do some research and know how you like to learn.

So, let’s start with… what even is “Graphic Design”?

Let’s get this straight… graphic designers aren’t fine artists. They are problem solvers, visual communicators, and sometimes curators of information in an aesthetically pleasing way. We organize information and try to make the world an easier-to-understand and more beautiful place. Of course, there are other fields like advertising where we communicate to customers why they should buy certain products. Or there are User Interface/Experience designers that will develop websites and video game interfaces and design how you interact with it. Look into graphic design and see what field you want to be in. What do you want to do with graphic design?

Fun fact, the google definition says: “the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books.” and to that, I’d like to say we do SO MUCH MORE.

Now that you know what you’re doing…Here’s the VERY BRIEF process!
(I may make individual posts for each step later on)

  1. Learn the basics
    1. Typography, how to use the basic principles of line, shape, color, and so on is usually for everyone no matter your field.
    2. Basics like composition are also very important. If you’re into editorial then typographic spreads will be more of your focus. If you’re in web design then seeing how websites are typically laid out will be a thing to look into. Basic typography, color theory, and principles still apply!
    3. Basics and principles are a google search (or a book) away! Everyone talks about these things ALL the time.
  2. Look up inspiration and develop an “eye” for design
    1. Follow design blogs! Follow other designers! On all of your social media! (There are so many Tumblr blogs and Instagram accounts solely dedicated to graphic design curation).
  3. Look into the big names of the industry
    1. Why were they remembered? Everyone else in the field probably remembers them for that, too.
    2. What was so great about them? Apply what you learn to your own work!
    3. If they’re well known, they probably have at least decent work to get inspired from!
  4. Research is done… time to do some work!
    1. If you’re just starting out, there are some things you’re probably not used to. Doing things by hand with sharpie markers on paper will definitely help train your eye and mind to think more about communication, not pretty things.
    2. Abstract things down into simple shapes. Then try communicating that same object with fewer shapes. Maybe only lines? Geometric style? Play around with communication! This is key when you get into icons, logos, and other visuals that require a more minimal look.
    3. Remember, you make information more easily accessible. The best logos are easy to remember because they are simple and effective. Your work may one day need that kind of punch!
  5. The jump from traditional to digital
    1. It’s time to learn about your program(s) of choice… my biggest piece of advice would be to just mess with it. Learning on your own by trying to make something is one of the best ways to train your mind and body on how to use the programs.
    2. Try every tool. Try making basic shapes. Then make basic objects with those shapes. Then try making a person or something more complicated. Try to test every tool to see what you’d use it for!
    3. Don’t know anything or how to do something? Google it! If you’re asking there’s probably 5+ different YouTube videos, 3+ articles, and 100+ tutorials on how to do it.
  6. Let’s work on projects!
    1. Now that you’re familiar with the history, principles, other designers, and the programs… just keep on making stuff!
    2. Making your own projects (make your own website, business cards, a flyer for a club, a T-Shirt, and so on…) is my biggest recommendation on how to learn graphic design. Actually applying everything you’ve learned will make you think in a problem-solving way! Also sharing things that you’ve made that actually matter is way more fun than sharing a fancy circle you made with no context. (You can say “look at this T-Shirt I made!” instead of “look at this weird circle I made!”)
  7. Get feedback from designers and non-designers
    1. Once you’ve made stuff… ask everyone! Non-designers will give you a client’s perspective of your work. A designer’s perspective will help you grow as a designer and they may see things that you and your average person wouldn’t have noticed. (you’re always free to ask me if you’d like!)
    2. Please remember to not take feedback personally (unless they’re being rude, then just ignore them). You’re learning and growing and there’s always room for improvement. A lot of feedback is not a bad thing!
  8. Stay determined!
    1. Being a designer isn’t easy. That T-Shirt you made that took you a couple days? Someone could say they don’t get it. Other designers could say there was a better way to execute your idea. Another person may even say it looks like something else!
    2. When you design you have to expect to make revisions, rethinking, and making more revisions until it’s at a good enough place to publish. But no matter what, you have to remember that it’s not about PERFECTION. It’s about getting it DONE and learning to grow. No one is perfect, and it’s mostly subjective, so just take the criticism you agree with and don’t apply what you disagree with. As a designer, you should know what’s right, wrong, or what you should consider bringing up to other designers.
    3. KEEP MAKING MORE STUFF! You can even remake older stuff as you go on! Just keep going!

That’s my super brief process!

Now honestly, I could’ve gotten down into the nitty gritty details of each step, but this is basically how I’d suggest going about it if you want to get a head start before getting into college, or you want to just learn on your own.

If you guys have any additional questions or want me to go more in-depth about anything, feel free to let me know! :)

The Resistance Calendar
Organize. Resist. Repeat.

From my friend Michael Moore:

“GOOD NEWS FRIENDS! I’ve promised you a one-stop site, a clearinghouse of all actions – a RESISTANCE CALENDAR – where you can find EVERY upcoming action, protest, march, sit-in, town hall, anti-Trump, pro-democracy event in all 50 states! A site where YOU can post your own action so all can see it. A place where you can quickly go and check it daily, ensuring that you don’t miss any event in your area to stop the Trump madness.
So, right now, I and a team of graphic designers are launching the RESISTANCE CALENDAR!
Here’s the link: resistancecalendar.org
In addition to you finding events in your area, we want you to be able to post any local actions you’re aware of. So much is happening so fast it’s hard to keep track of all the actions popping up – but our intention is to do just that. Every day. A 24/7 clearinghouse of the already MASSIVE resistance to Trump, to the Republican Congress, and, yes, to many of the spineless Democratic politicians out there. We welcome all resisters across the movement to use this tool. It’s completely free. There’s no big “funder” or group behind it. There will be no ads, no commercialization, no fundraising lists – all the stuff we hate. Just you, me, the volunteers donating their time to keep it going and the World Wide Web. BOOM!
Follow the Resistance Calendar on Facebook at: facebook.com/resistancecalendar
Follow Resistance Calendar on Twitter at @ResistCalendar
Go to our site at www.resistancecalendar.org
When you go on Resistance Calendar, go to the search box and type in your city or state to find events near you. You can also type in keywords to find actions around issues in which you share a concern. Or you can just scroll down and see every upcoming event across the country in chronological order. In the other box you can add events happening in your area. Our team carefully curates the listings to guarantee accuracy.
A note of explanation: As we are still building this site, we will be constantly upgrading it. For instance, it’s going to have a killer map of the US and a big desk-style calendar where you can just click on any day and see what’s happening with the movement across America. We’ll have better and easier filters and other goodies. But for now, I wanted to get this up and let millions know what’s going on in their area.
Many large cities like New York, Seattle and Portland have excellent independent calendars online. My goal has been to have one all-encompassing national calendar covering even the smallest towns and villages. This calendar isn’t meant to replace anything out there that is doing great work, just add to it! A lot of you have asked me to put something like this together, so consider this as a simple contribution to the movement. It is crowdsourced, vetted and belongs to everyone. Let us know if you want to be part of the volunteer tech and curation team!
I sincerely hope this is a huge help and that all of you use it! Sign up on Facebook and Twitter now – and please tell your friends about it. Take a moment to add all the local events you know of. And remember – All hands on deck! It’s the only way we’re going to beat him and lessen the damage he’s doing. Our goal is his removal from office – and the defeat of any politician who isn’t with us. WE ARE THE MAJORITY.

Finally got the OK to post these: I got a chance to do some sample pages for a potential Animorphs graphic novel. They ended up deciding to go in a different direction, but I’m real happy with how these turned out! I love these characters and adapting parts of the first book into comic format was satisfying and challenging and fun. Especially figuring out how the heck to draw morphing! And what clothes to give everyone! This whole process made me want to work harder to make my own thing I love as much as this.

Anyway I hope you enjoy!

Let's Pretend (Bucky Barnes x Reader) Pt. 2 ♡

A/N: I finally did it! I finished part 2. Thank y’all so much for all the feedback it means so much to me (‘: also, I put a little Easter egg in here. There’s another marvel character mentioned in here that surfs Let’s Pretend, let’s see if y'all can find them. (; (also, tags are open too!)

Warnings: Smut, Pornography, graphic details of sex, swearing. Alcohol.

how to create aesthetic graphics

(a tutorial by rihleymatthews)

so, many people requested me a tutorial on these (x and x) graphics, and since they are not hard at all to create, i decided to try explaining to you guys how they come to life.

WARNING: this is a long and detailed tutorial. Please keep in mind I tried to show all the tricks I normally use for these graphics, so some steps are optional or extra.

you’ll need:

  • basic to medium photoshop knowledge (such as cropping, blending and shadowing)
  • a concept (a tv show, a character, something you can pick objects to represent them or their porsonality)
  • patience, a lot of patience.

Kanto pokémon: 001-151

IT’S FINALLY FINISHED

After so much careful color picking, suffering, sai crashing, tablet randomly losing pressure i finished it! It’s been three weeks of working on it and i think it really paid of. Overall i had fun and it was a good lineless art practice.

I guess i should start working on gen 2 now???

Do not repost without permission, claim as your own, or delete the caption. You may use them as icons if you ask me first. No need to ask if you’re going to use them for something personal (something you will not be posting online). Thank you!

The masks we weave for ourselves. / / / The Blue Spirit + The Painted Lady.

I’ve been hearing a lot of things about 13 reasons why lately, mostly bad which definitely makes sense. I’ve yet to see it and probably won’t but I can understand why so many people are upset with it.

But if you are looking for a show that handles the the subject of suicide well without romanticizing or misrepresenting it then may I suggest In The Flesh?

“But isn’t that the show about gay zombies?”

Technically, yes. But it’s so much more than that. In The Flesh covers the topics of mental illness and suicide better than any show I’ve seen to date. I first saw it when I was in a very rough place and it definitely had a lasting impact on me.

The show takes place in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, the undead have been treated and assimilated back into society. The main character is a boy named Keiren who reunites with his parents and sister after committing suicide. He’s given a second chance at life and gets to see how his death effected his family and community. More importantly, he also gets his own character development and learns coping mechanisms and that suicide is never the answer.

I can hardly do this show justice just by writing a few sentences about it. It’s beautiful, interesting, devastating, and it’s one of the only shows I will say has changed my life.

(While the series never shows graphic depictions of suicide there are trigger warnings for the following: scars, blood, body horror, death, homophobia, and discussions surrounding suicide)

Ugh I can’t believe I’m diving headfirst into the TAZ discourse but here’s my 2 cents on both the graphic novel and the Blupjeans issue. I know I can’t speak for the people who feel marginalized by this but here we go.

The graphic novel:

–I think y’all are holding the Mcelroys and the graphic novel artist at gunpoint here. Stop that. Gently inform them of your opinions on what they could do better or what you think they did wrong if anything (it’s called constructive criticism), and let them make their own darned creative decisions. They’ve proven time and time again that they care about their fanbase.

–No one is perfect, my dudes. If you hold people up on a pedestal and then immediately flip-flop your opinion of them to “shitty racists” when they make a single mistake, not only is that terrifying as a creator but it’s just a toxic environment in the first place. Again with the whole gently inform them that they made a mistake thing.

–In my opinion they should have gone with a prose novel or something because there are so many infinitely diverse and infinitely valid interpretations of the characters. Such a set-in-stone visual medium as a graphic novel is really the wrong thing for a podcast.

–Exactly how much is the Taco thing still a joke? They’ve kind of dropped the whole “inventing the taco” thing, made it clear that Lup isn’t short for Chalupa at all in any capacity, and Griffin made it clear that the dish Taako’s spent his whole life trying to imitate subconsciously is “not a taco” but some kind of open-faced sandwich with nutmeg-y stuff or whatever he described it as.

–If anything, blame Taco Bell and other Americanized fast food taco whatevers for turning tacos into such a meme-status food that Taako seemed like just a harmless joke in the first place.

Blupjeans:

–”Guys, don’t hate Blupjeans, either one can be bi or pan, it still falls under the LGBT umbrella” Um…guys, ok, so news flash, well-written straight couples can exist in shows with good diversity, ok. It’s not “The mcelroys are shitty for writing a straight couple….oh wait yeah one can be bi everything’s cool,” it’s “the mcelroys have written multiple well-done diverse romance stories in this DnD podcast, this being one of them.”
Also, Lup is already fantastic representation in and of herself, especially with such a strong relationship that she has, and the fact that she’s written as a person rather than just checking something off an identity checklist for brownie points.

–And on that note, I don’t think Griffin’s doing another Bury Your LGBT here! I really really really really feels like Griffin’s setting it up to bring Lup back. Really really really. Don’t call him out on killing off another LGBT character before she’s confirmed 100% Completely Dead. Remember we have the literal grim reaper on our side here.

The Ouroboros

I’ve been pondering what Feyre saw in the Ouroboros Mirror. What parts of herself did the Mirror drag up from the darkest depths of her soul and make her face? What was Feyre forced to come to terms with in order to save Prythian, her friends, her family, and court? What did she learn to love? And what does the beast have to do with anything?

I think Feyre had more to come to terms with than anyone else in Prythian. Yet she overcame it. She decided not to let her own soul destroy her.

I believe she had to watch her younger self wring the neck of a tiny rabbit as it screamed in pain—her first kill. Feyre watched from the snow-shrouded trees as an ash arrow imbedded itself in the side of large wolf, an unprovoked shot of pure hatred. The Ouroboros would have shown in graphic detail everything that occurred UtM—the dancing and drinking that made her feel filthy, the unsolved riddled that made her relive her shortcomings, and the unbearable murder of two innocent fae. The families of those two innocent souls as they raged and mourned and crumpled in weary misery. They had come so close to freedom, but the price to pay had been their loved one. Feyre had taken it from them.

The Mirror would have swirled with images and flashes of Tamlin, Lucien, Elain, Nesta…all those Feyre felt she had betrayed or let down in some way, whether it was deserved or not. Her conversations with Ianthe as she ignorantly shared every detail about her human family and their estate, then the moment her sisters stumbled through the door in Hybern, and were shoved into the Cauldron, Made into the very thing they hate. And somehow, after all this and so so much more, Feyre came to acceptance. But I think, more than all the ways she hurt those around her, or they hurt her in turn, all the blood and vomit and nightmares…more than any of that, Feyre had to learn to love the beast that stared back

I was not alone.

Crawling down the snow-kissed wall, a massive beast of claws and scales and fur and shredding teeth inched toward the floor. Toward me.

Its enormous paws were near-silent on the floor, the fur on them a blend of black and gold. Not a beast designed to hunt in these mountains. Certainly not with the ridge of dark scales down its back. And the large, shining eyes—.

I didn’t have time to remark on those blue-grey eyes as the beast pounced.

Where I had been standing … the beast now sat, scaled tail idly swishing through the snow.

Watching me.

Not—not watching.

Gazing back at me. My reflection.

Of what lurked beneath my skin.

My knife clattered to the stones and snow. And I looked into the mirror. (pg. 605-6)

“What did you see?”

“Myself. I saw myself.” (pg. 617-18)

Maas gives us a short, but very revealing description of the beast—Feyre’s beast

The significance of gold and black fur? Throughout ACOTAR and MAF, Feyre religiously rejected any power that related to Tamlin, namely the ability to shift into animal form. She feared the claws that poked against her skin. She hated them. Until she realized they weren’t Tamlin’s claws, they were her own. They were talons. And if she could make talons, she could make wings. Feyre’s beast form having a mixture of black and golden fur signifies that Tamlin is a part of her, and always will be. She once loved him, so much so that she killed for him, died for him. A love like that leaves a permanent imprint on a soul, even if the love itself doesn’t last forever. Feyre had to learn to love the part of her soul that had been touched and permanently changed by Tamlin.

The scales could signify several things. Of course Summer comes to mind. Feyre obviously has an affinity for the Summer magic that flows through her veins. It came easily to her—more easily than any other High Lord’s power. The scales might represent the bond formed between Tarquin and Feyre while she visited Summer. Regardless of the blood rubies, now rescinded, the High Lord of Summer and High Lady of Night shared a unique understanding of one another, and a common passion to spread equality between the High Fae and lesser faeries (and even humans) to all courts and territories.

The scales might also be equivalent to the thorns Feyre feels she has and once used to describe herself to Tamlin—the spiny ridge running down the beasts’ back and tail representing her prickly side. This is an annoying feature most of us have, and a part we all hate, but must accept responsibility for.

But perhaps the mostly likely possibility is that the scales and ridges represent Feyre’s armor (Illyrian armor is scaled). We know it to be thick. In ACOMAF, Rhysand worked for months to attempt to delve through the layers and layers of Feyre’s armor in the form of depression, anger, bitterness, and solitude. It is likely that Feyre had to learn to love that armor, even if she wished it had been stronger, or less harmful to those around her, the way it hurt Rhys after the Court of Nightmares scene in ACOMAF, and Mor at the camp in ACOWAR. While gazing at herself in the Mirror, Feyre had to learn to bear her armor proudly and honorably, to use it to strategically protect herself, and not harm or keep out those who love her, fight for her.

The massive, flesh-shredding teeth—Feyre’s ability and willingness to kill and murder. Whether for food to avoid starvation, killing for no other reason than pure, undiluted hatred, or the murder of innocents to save the one she loved, Feyre has a lot of blood on her hands. And as we learned through her nightmares and admittance to Cassian…Feyre feels that blood should be her own. She has fangs, and she’s used them—over and over again. Feyre suffered soul-deep from the pain she felt she brought upon others. But when the Mirror showed her those glistening teeth and impressive maw, Feyre had to accept that pain and torment—and then turn it against her enemies. Not fangs to harm the innocent, but rather to protect them, to fight for them. To fight against Hybern and the injustices of the world. To protect her sisters and those like them. To care for the weak and weary and afraid.

I have been struck each time I’ve read these scenes—on a personal level. To think about facing my own beast…what would it look like? How would I react as it sat and laid my very soul bare? Could I even look into my own eyes as they gazed back in judgement? Could I learn to love every part of myself as Feyre did? Would I be able to face my inner most demons? Honestly, I don’t know. But I think we could all benefit from pondering this passage a bit more.

Penny for your thoughts.

Crash Course in Russian | The Alphabet

Ok people so I’m thinking of making some Russian language powerpoints.  I know a lot of you like ‘quick and dirty’ language learning (as do I) so I figure I might as well simplify some of my own notes and share them here.

The first set I’m uploading is the Cyrillic alphabet. I know there are TONS of these out there but I personally can’t stand graphics/drawings or ‘tips & tricks’ on my study materials because I find that immensely distracting, so I’ve put together a set which I find much more aesthetically pleasing.

I’ve included some short notes on palatalization but otherwise everything is greatly simplified.  Again, I plan for this series to be a ‘quick and dirty’ overview for those who have little to no familiarity with the language and who don’t plan to study it very seriously.  Alternatively this series can serve as scaffolding material for those to plan to learn the language in the future.

As a disclaimer, I am not a native speaker of Russian and though I will be putting a lot of effort into these there are bound to be some mistakes.  I appreciate any kind feedback or corrections.

The Cursive Alphabet | Tips on Pronunciation

i spent a lot of time today thinking about about bad behaviour in fandom. not because it’s new, per se, but the widespread disrespect for boundaries, both with the actors and with each other, is new in its sheer volume. entitlement to others and entitlement to your space without regard for its impact on others is a new thing and i have a need to pick at why it is and where it has come from.

at a macro level, there’s been a huge shift in what fandom is. until fairly recently fandom was a few things, but universally it was creatively focused and carried out in privacy. yes, people were fans of the actors more often than not, but that was distinctly separate from fandom, which above all else was about doing things with the material. it occurs to me that fandom may have been the wrong word for what we were, because the reason people found themselves entering fandom was as much as out of frustration as it was with adoration. we wanted to do something more with the material. it absolutely is not this way anymore. being in fandom now is about being a fan, the loudest and the more intense that you can be. it’s like cheering for a sports team, as if your encouragement will get your chosen team over the finish line first.

and also who can be the “best” fan. see also: ship polls, getting acknowledgement from people  involved in the material, and your chosen ship becoming canon.

the goals have changed. it’s not about doing something yourself. it’s about getting other people, namely the material creators, to do something for you. and it is all very, very public.

and yet congruously there is this entitlement to treat your own space in fandom as if it were private. the belief that what you want to do is yours to be done regardless of consequence because it’s your space. most overtly i see this in things like not tagging nsfw content, in not rating fic, in not recognising that just because you choose to engage in fandom, a space that is at times highly sexual in nature, doesn’t mean those around you must be forced to participate with you. in shoving graphic fanart in actors faces. in making actors read fic about their characters.

a part of this, i’m starting to feel, is owed to the growing but fracturing spaces that fandom inhabits. disregarding twitter, which is a steaming pile of bad behaviour directed at anyone with a speck of name recognition, fandom is ironically in what feels like a very public/private split at the moment. yes, we’re all here on tumblr. but tumblr is horrible for conversation, and so most people have shifted to a secondary space for conversation. so much of the dialogue that makes fandom great is now taking place away from easy access to broader fandom. everybody’s got a group chat or five, and that’s where you’re a person and not just a faceless tumblr of other people’s content. with that split, a lot of institutional memory and general good behaviour modelling is fading away, especially as those who have been around for an age start to pull back from engaging in this new era of fandom because it’s not what we signed up for.

i don’t have any conclusions about all this, other than that it all makes me very uncomfortable. i don’t want to be associated with this public face of fandom, and i never have. but as fandom becomes more and more mainstream, i can only see this escalating. and as a fan of the power of language and the capacity it has to define what we are, a part of me wishes some great schism will come.

yet i can’t help but feel some responsibility for this place i’ve called home for nearly 20 years. i want us all to be better, even if we don’t all want the same things out of this space we all share.
