I had the chance to ask Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, some questions about her plans for America’s children.
When I asked her about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, DeVos said that she believed the issue is “a matter best left to the states.” At best, this was a gross misunderstanding of the federal statute, and at worst a suggestion that private schools could receive federal educational funds even if they did not honor the civil rights of children with disabilities.
Education is the key to everything we want to achieve as a nation. It’s a critical driver of economic growth, and the mechanism for individuals – regardless of their background – to learn the skills to achieve their dreams. We need a Secretary of Education who will do right by all of our children and put their priorities ahead of politics.
Senator Tim Kaine, after DeVos’ nomination hearing that she was embarrassingly unprepared and unqualified for.
Or, as Kaine suggest, worst case scenario is that her performance is her at her most prepared, and she is fully prepared to strip away the foundations of a free and appropriate public education for our highest need students.
