To be honest, you weren’t too surprised that you had ended up in your current situation. Staring up at the flickering lights the candles cast on the ceiling, you pulled your gaze over to Newt. He had been sitting there a for a while now, occasionally scribbling at his book, but really he was not so discreetly watching you. Just then he tried to sneak a glance, making eye contact. You smirked when he blushed and averted his eyes, muttering something inaudible.
“Watching me, now are you?” You mused, leaning back into the bed.
“Someone has to make sure you don’t hurt yourself,” Newt paused. He turned around, propping himself on the back of the chair. “Again.”
“I’m perfectly capable of doing that myself,” You argued, crossing your arms in defiance. You then glanced at your broken ankle and then up at Newt, who had a knowing look upon his face.
“If you say so, (Name).” He sighed, turning back around to his desk. He didn’t talk anymore after that, leaving you in silence. You exhaled loudly, trying to gain your boyfriend’s attention. When he didn’t react, you groaned.
“(Name)? (Name), are you alright?” Came a frantic voice, suddenly at your side. You peeked open one eye, grinning up at Newt.
“Fine, now that you’re talking to me,” You chirped, blinking innocently. Newt only rubbed his face tiredly and meandered back to his workspace, grunting as he plopped back onto the chair.
“You should really take a break,” You wondered aloud after another few minutes of silence. As much as you sometimes loved to bask in the quiet atmosphere of the case, tonight was not one of those times.
“I’m fine.” Newt muttered monotonously, mindlessly jotting things down in his notebook. The only noise that filled the cozy hut was the infrequent rippling sound whenever a page was flipped. The constant silence was driving you insane, and you wondered why tonight of all nights was so off compared to your usual routine.
“Are you still mad at me?” You suddenly blurted out. Newt was never this quiet towards you usually, and the only other time this awkward silence had presented itself was when you had somehow lost his Hufflepuff scarf. Of course you had apologized profusely after finding it, and in the end Newt being Newt also apologized for being “unreasonably angry” as he had just had a “terribly long and insufferable day.” Sighing, you cleared your throat, urging a response from the ever so defiant magizoologist.
“No.” He replied flatly.
“Yes you are.” You grumbled, focusing on his form and giving him a pointed look.
“No I’m not,” Newt muttered once more, still refusing to meet your gaze.
“Fine.” You huffed, sitting up on the edge of the bed. “Then you won’t mind if I just, uh, hold on-” You paused, looking for your crutches or at least something to help you up. Could’ve sworn they were right there…
“Well, this will just have to do,” You mumbled, grabbing the walking stick you had spotted leaning on the bed. Jumping off the bed, you wobbled around for a few seconds before steadying on your good foot and using the stick to help balance off the other side. The clatter that came from both your sudden weight and the stick prompted Newt to look over his shoulder, only for him to stand up abruptly and push the chair over.
“(Name)! What in Merlin’s name do you think you’re doing?!” He exclaimed, practically apparating to your side.
“Going to see Frank, since you’re clearly ignoring me.” You retorted.
“Absolutely not. Your- Your stunt with Frank was what caused this,” He gestured wildly to your broken leg, “In the first place! I forbid you to visit him.” He stated firmly, crossing his arms.
“You can’t do that!” You defended. Both you and Newt worked together to save Frank, and either way it didn’t mean that he had a higher standing in who could do what.
“Yes I can! As your boyfriend I’m supposed to protect you, so no, you cannot visit Frank because the last time you did you broke a limb!” Newt rose his voice, shaking quite a bit. His fists were clenched, tensely held at his sides. You held a breath at the sudden outburst, leaning backwards. Newt was panting, eyes screwed shut out of frustration.
“Newt,” You started softly, bringing a hand up to his face. He leaned into your touch, breaths slowing down gradually. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know you felt so strongly about this.” You murmured guiltily. He opened his eyes, gazing at you tenderly. The tiny golden flecks reflected off his irises, catching the light in the room.
“It’s alright…I just- I just don’t want to see you hurt, you know? It scares me how reckless you are, and someday I’m seriously scared that it’ll go too far, and I don’t want to lose you. It’s cheesy and I know just how cheesy it is but I truly, really, cannot imagine what my life’d be like without you here.” He stressed quietly.
“I’m sorry.” You mumbled faintly once again, casting your eyes to the floor.
“Don’t be. I’m sorry for getting mad at you.” He apologized, bringing you into a hug. You stood there together for a while, enjoying each other’s presence, before you broke the comfortable silence by giggling.
“What is it?” Newt questioned, looking at you in confusion.
“I just think it’s funny how you- how you fainted.” You snickered.
“Well I’m sorry for being concerned about you,” He muttered, burying his face in the crook of your neck. You could practically hear his blush, only prompting you to giggle some more.
“If you keep laughing I won’t cuddle with you anymore.” Newt threatened, although you could hear the playful tone he tried to mask.
“No,” You gasped, “You wouldn’t.”
“I would.” He reaffirmed.
“Okay, sure,” You agreed. “I’ll just go snuggle up with Frank.” You shrugged, hopping away from Newt’s embrace. You knew he wouldn’t be able to last without cuddles for long, so who really won there?
“Wait- Wait what? (Name)! Come back!” He shouted, chasing after your hobbling form.
“Nope! No cuddles!” You sang teasingly. He asked for it, and you would deliver.
