All’s Fair in Love, War,  and Politics (1/5)

Title: All’s Fair in Love, War, and Politics

Length: ~33k words (in total, this first part is ~7k)

Summary: In an impulsive moment of weakness, Mark agrees to a bet set by Bob and Wade. He has to be elected class president at his university to win, so to save his hair he now needs a way to get his name out there so that people will vote for him. As luck would have it though, he ends up catching the eye of the school’s radio DJ.

Warnings: Swearing, slight drinking/mentions of alcohol, all of the cheesy fluff tropes rolled into one disaster of a conglomeration

Author’s Note: I’ve never written septiplier before (and of course my first attempt had to be rly frikin long why @ self) be nice to me pls This fic was inspired in large part by @tiny-septic-box-sam‘s fic I’ll Make You A Deal, which I would go tell you to read bc it’s awesome but it’s currently off the air to be turned into a book which is like the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard??? awesome job wow but aNYWAY this, too, is a college au, so I did have Mark drink a little because he didn’t find out about his intolerance until later in life and everyone’s ages are a little out of alignment. I know people can be any age to go to college and that it doesn’t really mean anything, but I just wanted to say that yeah, it’s a little confusing, but just roll with me on this one. It’s going to be alright. also I started this before tyler and ethan joined the squad full time which is why they’re not in here sorry

CinemaVariety's Top 6 Horror Films of 2014

Compared to last year, 2014 was a pretty disappointing year for horror films. I liked a lot that were released this year, but I didn’t fall in love with many as I did in 2013 (The Lords of Salem / Maniac). However, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some quality horror films released this year. None of the films on this list are perfect. But as far as horror films go, they all work well.
** This list is in order. **

#6 - As Above, So Below
Directed by John Erick Dowdle

I was not looking forward to seeing this film at all. I thought the trailers looked pretty cheesy and I am usually pretty good at spotting a shitty horror film just by watching a preview for it. But I like the director who also made some of my favorite horror flicks such as The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Quarantine. After reading bad things about it, I read almost just as many good things. I have to agree with the supporters for the film - critics were too harsh on this. It was an equivalent to a bad trip on hallucinogens. The whole idea of being trapped in the underground catacombs and having to continue deeper into the earth is my idea of a personal hell. I developed a definite dread as the film went on. That being said, As Above, So Below  suffers from a weak last act that had me rolling my eyes a little.

#5 - Oculus
Directed by Mike Flanagan

Oculus was another horror film that I wasn’t too eager to see. I thought it looked a little cliche. Going into the film with low expectations definitely resulted in a pleasant surprise. The movie isn’t your average horror film - in fact, it could easily be classified as a dramatic thriller instead. The mirror in the film is portrayed as a blood-thirsty object and the affect that it has on the characters is an affirmation of that. Great performances by the two parents, especially the mother, are what made this film unsettling - not to mention the really awesome way the director blended the past and present.

#4 - Willow Creek
Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait

Willow Creek caught my interest after reading a positive review about in on IndieWire (one of my favorite websites for film news). I had never seen a horror film centered around big foot before and I wasn’t too sure if it could be done without coming across as ridiculous or comical. I had reservations while watching the beginning of the film, but as it went on I let my guard down a little and I’m glad I did. This film played on the same fears of mine as The Blair Witch Project did, and for that I appreciate its execution. My biggest fear is of the unknown and not knowing what is out there. The last portion of this film, which is in the photo above, started out making me nervous and ended up instilling actual fear in me. That rarely happens for me anymore. A much better big foot film than the mediocre Exists.

#3 - Afflicted
Directed by Clif Prowse & Derek Lee

Not only is Afflicted one of the best horror films released this year, it is also one of the best found-footage movies ever made. I applaud both the directors who also starred as the two main characters. The mockumentary style is overdone in the horror genre, but Afflicted breaths new life into it. It starts out with some really genuine and believable interactions between the characters. It felt so believable that I could have been watching an actual documentary. As it progresses, Afflicted works as an action film as well. GoPro cameras are utilized to create a really immersive experience in certain sequences. If Chronicle was more of a horror film - it would be this.

#2 - The Sacrament
Directed by Ti West

Ti West is obviously a director of great quality. But his films are always a hit or miss for me. His directorial debut, The House of the Devil, was a truly creepy slow-burn 80s throwback with a dash of satanic ritual which always satisfies me. However, his short in V/H/S was the weakest in my opinion and The Innkeepers felt like a horror film made for children. Thankfully, The Sacrament was a definite hit and is easily West’s best film yet. I have studied a lot about the Jonestown massacre and watched documentaries on Jim Jones so when I found out a movie was being made based on the massacre, I was very intrigued. The hand-held aspect of the film can actually be overlooked for once because it is a notable news crew (Vice Media who I follow and enjoy) making a documentary about the commune. The film builds up an atmosphere of true dread which caused me to feel very uncomfortable. Cults always get under my skin and the fact that this film is based on true events made it break my heart in a way. I drew tears out of terror and disgust as the “sacrament” takes place in the end. The Sacrament created a knot in my stomach and I can easily classify it as one of the most disturbing films ever made.

#1 - Starry Eyes
Directed by Dennis Widmyer & Kevin Kolsch

I was set on seeing this film after seeing both the teaser trailer and the official trailer. It looked as if David Lynch and David Cronenberg had a baby together and the outcome was Starry Eyes. The concept is of a young actress struggling to make it in Hollywood and the eventual sacrifice of her body in order to transform into a “star”. The whole film is symbolic about Hollywood turning you into something you’re not and it has many allusions to the Illuminati. If you loved Mulholland Drive, then this film is for you. The majority of this film plays as a psychological drama. However, the last thirty minutes takes a bloody turn and it shifts into overdrive as a brutal and unflinching horror. Body mutilation and transformation hits a strong chord in me. I watched in horror at the disgusting, yet beautiful, ending. Starry Eyes deserves its place as a future cult classic.

Open letter to the ovw and Tf2 Fandom

These days had been really impressing for both fandoms. The Overwatch fandom got a really nice announcement: an actual character being canonically lesbian, and most important, the character who was the principal mascot, Tracer. When I heard about the news, I couldn’t believe it. How Blizzard decided to do such a greta thing? LGBT representation, wow! I got extremely happy for see the incredible acceptance from the people here having a gay character in there. We also know that not all the people shared the news as something good, but that’s another point. In other hand, many guys from the Tf2 started to think about: “Are we gonna have an update?” “Where is the new comic?” “Why Valve is like this” etc, and a huge discourse started between people being rude, telling to a lot of my mutuals that “Tf2 was over, and get over it” And the drama started. Here is my point of view.

Characters : Bucky Barnes x Reader

Summary : *Based off Nerve* What happens when a good girl decides to step out of her comfort zone for one night and play a game? A game like truth or dare, but without truth. Where watchers pay to watch and players play to win. Will she win? Or will she lose, everything…

Warning : Cursing?

A/N : I saw the trailer for this and thought this would be such an awesome story to write! I am making this into a drabble series, so they will be short! Also, I am changing it up. So it’s not going exactly from the trailer. Lol.
Bucky will be in the next one!! just to let you know lol.

“Shit.” You groaned, pinching the bridge of your nose as you tried to calm yourself. Your roommate, Nina shot her gaze to you, raising a brow in suspicion.

“What?” She asked.

You turned the laptop around, and sighed. “My books this semester are expensive! I mean, how do they expect me to pay for food, my phone, gas, school and books?!”
“Why don’t you just ask your parents for money?” She asked.

Shaking your head, you laid back down on to your bed, and stared at your screen. “I can’t. My dad just lost his job and–I just can’t.” You muttered.
Nina frowned, knowing how much you had been struggling that year since your father got laid off. Now you were left to pay for everything, and it was becoming all too stressful.

But a notification popped up on her screen, and suddenly an idea planted in her mind. “I think I found your solution.” She exclaimed.
You shot her a look, furrowing your brows. “What?”
“Have you heard of this website, Nerve?” She asked, motioning for you to go over to her side of the room.

You shook your head, as you pulled yourself out of bed. “I barely have time to even text anyone, I don’t ever go one the computer unless it for class.”
She turned her laptop toward you and your eyes immediately met the colorful screen.

“Just watch.” She muttered.

As she pressed play, the video began. There were multiple clips of people doing outrageous things, like jumping off rocky cliffs, or stealing a cops gun. And the voice that narrated the video explained what was actually happening.

“It’s a game like truth or dare, but without truth. Where watchers pay to watch, and players play to win. Are you a watcher or a player?”

“Isn’t it cool?” She asked. “The girls and I watch it every saturday night. Its suppose to start in an hour.”

You eyed her for a moment, “And?”
“And? Hello! This could be your big break! You could beat this and win!” She exclaimed.

You crossed your arms and shook your head. “Oh no! No! This is against the law! I mean, i can’t do half of the things those people did!”
“Come on Y/N! Its $150K!” She yelled. “Just get out of your head for a bit, live. Have fun!”

150K? That would help you out so much. But the thought of playing a game you had no control over, that scared you more than anything.

Nina rolled her eyes as she realized you weren’t even paying attention. “Should’ve known you don’t have the balls.” She whispered. “Well, enjoy being miserable. I am going to go and have some fun tonight.” Nina closed her laptop, and made her way to the door. before escaping into the hallway, she looked back at you.
“Life is too short to be cooped up in here, worrying so much about money and exams.”

Before you had a chance to even respond, she left.

You let out a huff, and plopped back down to your bed. She had no idea what you were going through. She had her parents paying for her school and food. So there was no room for her to talk.

Laying on your stomach, you began looking over your notes for Anatomy. But for some reason, you just couldn’t focus. Her words were taunting you, echoing in your head as well as the images from the video.
Without realizing, you had opened a new tab and searched for Nerve. The bright colors flashed, as you watched the video once again. Until it came to an end and the options appeared on your screen.

Are you a player? Or a watcher?

You took in a deep breath, and clicked the box you wanted.

Day 3: College AU

It was an average Saturday night in Kyoto University, one of the most prestigious universities that Tokyo has to offer. The rate of graduation was at its highest peak and the guarantee of a finding a job is 85%. Hinata’s father, Hyuuga Hiashi, had his eyes set on this school ever since Hinata was a small child. He’s pushed his oldest daughter as close to perfection as it can get and his stern and harsh ways of treatment was rewarded. Now he tells his co-workers with pride that his Hinata is attending Kyoto University, majoring in Business so she can take over their family’s company. However, Hiashi never took into consideration what Hinata wanted.

Ever since Hinata was a small, little girl she was fascinated how a seed becomes a tree or a flower.  How her body has evolved from a month to three years old. How since the start of time, human existence came from one ancestor and was broken down into two groups. And from those two groups, one overcame the other by just a little. And from that group, its branches grew and grew till survival of the fittest came in and evolved their body. It fascinated her and she stayed up many hours watching documentaries about Anthropology and the growth of human revolution. She tried to voice out her passion but her father always pushed her own opinions aside. “I just want the best for you,” he would say and back then, she believed his words. It was around her high school years that she started to realize that majoring in Business was good for him instead for her. Since then, she’s secretly been buying books about Ecology and Evolution, reading volumes of it and taking notes.

It’s been a week since she started living in the university’s campus and she began to debate whether or not she should tell her father that she will not major in Business but in Anthropology instead.

She wriggled her hands and wiped the sweat that started to cumulate on her palms. Her roommate left a few minutes ago to “party the boring out of me” and tried to convince the shy and anti-social Hinata to come along. Of course, ever since elementary Hiashi had forbid Hinata to bond with any friend or attend any occasions unless it was beneficial. Because of the lack of social life, Hinata became rather reserve and stuck to herself instead. Her roommate reluctantly left but not before suggesting a website where Hinata can chat with random strangers—or specifically, the university’s students.

A couple of years ago, this group of Psychology students decided to form a chatting website that had all of the university’s students registered in it. So what it does is that it immediately finds you a match and—ta da!—you’re talking with a complete stranger who attends this school. It was supposed to be a project to show that if you’re comfortable by a complete stranger who might be the person next to you, it can help you become more social or something like that. Anyway, try it. If you don’t like it…well…you can read or something. Ja ne!

Hinata glanced at the screen that had a chibi student pointing to a box that says CHAT NOW. Would it be so bad to try something new? She wasn’t attending any party, she was just going to talk to a complete stranger and if she feels uncomfortable she can just exit it with no hard feelings. The more she thought about it, the more she warmed up to it. It can also distract her from her problem. She clicked the box and a webpage immediately came up. In it, it said “Looking for stranger to talk to…” She anxiously waited before a loud ding made her jump. Looking at the screen, it read, “Found a match! You are chatting with a stranger. Say hi!” She took in a deep breath before placing her fingers on the keyboard. “I can do this…”

The first couple of times the conversations failed. The stranger either asked for her age and sex and if her answer unsatisfied them, they immediately disconnected. When the stranger didn’t disconnect, the conversations usually led down a road of sexuality and horniness, something that made Hinata squeal with embarrassment and horror, making her click the exit button multiple times. Sometimes the conversations started of pleasant, with a simple “hello” and “how are you” before leading to a road block, officially ending the boring and small conversation. When she failed a couple of more times, Hinata began to truly believe that not only did she suck at having real life conversation, she also sucks at having virtually ones.

Deciding to try one more time before waving the white flag, she clicked exit and was matched up by a new stranger.

You: Hello?

Stranger: Hello! How are you?

You: I am well and you?

Stranger: Well, you know university stress. Always throwing you homework before you can even /breathe/! It’s like today, I had this professor…you know the one with the bushy brows and horrible bowl cut?

You: Gai-sensei…?

Stranger: Yeah! Him! Well I forgot to do his homework and he exclaimed—yeah, exclaimed!—that I had to go up in front of the class and act out the play we were supposed to read today. I had to do all of the parts!

You: Oh. That’s horrible.

Stranger: Yeah, well, I also had to act the girl parts and it was so embarrassing! Some guys were hooting at me to sway my hips and I was like no way but then I thought I should get Gai-baka back so then I purposely tied my shirt like a bra so my whole stomach was showing and you should have seen the class!

You: Oh my!

Stranger: Yeah, I mean, my body is something to brag about because, if I say so myself, I’m pretty sexy.

Hinata didn’t know why but she giggled at the stranger’s response.

You: I bet you are.

Did she just type that?

Stranger: Is that sarcasm? I can’t really tell D:

The conversation went on till one in the morning. They talked about different topics, all ranging from politics to the newest restaurant that just opened up a few blocks away. It surprised herself how she was able to keep up with the conversation and after an hour or so chatting with the stranger, she was able to input her own opinions and start a whole different conversation. She felt confident and a sense of pride overtook her. She was able to become social! Yes, it was a virtual chat, but it was something. The conversation was coming to a close and a surge of panic overtook her. She didn’t want to stop talking to this funny stranger. She wanted to learn more about him/her and perhaps, if they wanted to, become friends.

Stranger: So I have a feeling that you won’t type it so I guess I’ll take one for the team. Sigh. Can I have your cell phone number or something? I really like talking to you and I would love to keep talking to ya.

What should she say? Without thinking it twice she responded.

You: I do have a cell phone number. It would be my pleasure to talk to you more. It was…fun talking to you. It’s 81-956-487-54-2136. And if I can ask, what is your name?

Stranger: Yatta! It’s awesome that you want to talk to me as much as I want to talk to you. The names Uzumaki Naruto and you, *fake British accent* my stranger dear?

You: Hyuuga Hinata, it was nice talking to you. I will be awaiting your message, yes?

Stranger: You bet. Sayonara!

You have disconnected with stranger. Would you like to try another one?

Hinata barley closed her laptop before crashing down on her bed, her cell phone clutched between her sweaty palms.

Coming Sunday morning, Hinata was rudely awakened by her roommate jumping on her.

“I-Ino-san, w-what’s—what time is it?” asked Hinata groggily, her hands rubbing off the sleep from her eyes.

“It’s seven in the morning but Hinata! I need help with my homework and I know how smart you are and stuff so—” Hinata blocked out the rambling of her roommate and decided to place her head on her pillow, too tired to think if it was a rude gesture or not. “Oh, woah, you seem tired. Wait, did you try out that website I showed you?” The word website unlocked the memory of last night and Hinata sat up quicker than a blink of an eye, her back cracking from the sudden movement. Ino tumbled back out of shock and watched with a quirk eyebrow as Hinata was scrambling around her bed, looking for something.

“I see you are no way prepared to help me so I’ll just go to Billboard Brow and nag her about it.” Hinata nodded but was more focus on finding her phone. She had it with her last night, where was it now? Ino quietly collected her things but before she left, she turned around and pointed to the floor, “If you’re looking for your phone, it’s on the floor.” She laughed when she saw Hinata tumble over her bed just to get to the phone. The last thing the indigo hair girl heard was Ino’s cackling laughter from the hallway.

Sighing out of relief, she quickly unlocked her screen and tapped the message icon. It told her that she missed ten messages. Dear god, was it Uzumaki-san? And sure enough, when she tapped on the ten messages left behind by a number unknown to her, she was right.

Etto…I got his number right…right?

It’s Naruto btw. You know, The Great Uzumaki Naruto that you talked to on the website?

I hope I got your number right.

This is Hinata, right?

I hope I got it right.

What if you’re a serial killer instead and you now have all of my information because I texted you. Oh shit, no! Please don’t kill me! I don’t taste very good!

I realized that the last message was weird so ignore that please.

Beep. Beep. Is Hinata there or asleep?

Well, just text me back when you can please.

Hinata gasped. He actually texted her! Of course she had her doubts when Uzumaki-san asked for her number. What if he forgot? What if he doesn’t really want to talk to her and he just said it out of politeness? But the ten messages reassured her beating heart that he does want to talk to her in his own free time. A thrill went up and down her spine when she thought that maybe he’ll become her first friend in the university. She couldn’t count Ino-san just yet but—with a fond smile—the bright blond was sneaking her way into her heart.

She touched her phone and quickly replied to Uzumaki-san’s text messages.

You have it right, Uzumaki-san, and I’m sorry I couldn’t respond last night…or this morning…I was so tired, I fell asleep so quickly. Sumimasen.

With a satisfied smile and a hop in her step, she clicked the home button and waited with bated breath that Uzumaki-san responds soon.

After a good hour or so of doing her bed and taking a shower, Hinata comes back with one new message on her phone. She jumped on her bed and unlocked her phone, eagerly touching the message icon.

Eh, don’t worry about it! So that means you sleep early, yeah?

Hai, I do. Do you?

And once again, a whole two hours of conversation ensued. While Hinata texted her new found friend, she also took out her books and studied while doing her homework. She wasn’t considered a genius for nothing. Many years of Hiashi pushing his daughter, forced her body and mind to get use to many hours of memorization and multitasking. But despite all the work around her, her head instinctively moved to her phone to check for any messages or she’ll be studying a subject only to remember a part of their conversation and she’ll laugh. It was a wonderful experience.

Hey, what’s your schedule?

Hinata paused and a small frown formed on her face.

Hai, schedule. We are from the same university so we might as well meet up and talk, ne?

Hinata wasn’t expecting that. She quickly locked her phone and pushed it far away from her as if it contained a deadly virus. Her heart jumped every time she thought of his proposition and her body heated to the point that she started sweating out of nervousness despite it being cold in her room. What does she say? She could barley handle a virtual conversation and all of a sudden life decided to give her chance for a real one, but was she up for it? Was she ready to face reality and actually talk to someone? What if she froze? It was a different story texting someone and actually talking to that person face to face. She wiped away the sweat on her palms and slowly grabbed her phone, not sure what to reply.

“C-C’mon, Hinata, you can do this,” she whispered to herself encouragingly. She unlocked her phone and pressed the message icon once more. His question burned her mind and her heart raced, excited yet nervous. Her stomach did flips as she texted out her response. She clicked send and closed her eyes, a sense of dread and nervousness washing over her.

Hai. Let’s meet at the library that’s next to the science building tomorrow at 3:30 pm. If you can.

Her phone vibrated on her palm and a loud ding resounded in the quiet room. She took a deep breath and glanced down, her heart racing and her vision going black.

Sure I can! Can’t wait to see you tomorrow! :)

“Oh m-my, what have I done?”

After finishing her biology class, she took small and tentative steps towards the library, knowing what awaits her beyond those metal doors. Her cheeks were turning redder with every step she took and her heart seemed to pick up its pace with every thought surrounding Uzumaki-san. He sounded like such a bright and fun person, would he be disappointed when he truly sees how she is? Would he up and leave her when he sees her? She wasn’t anything outstanding but plain than anything else. She didn’t dye her hair because she was perfectly fine with her midnight color. She didn’t like to tan because her skin was sensitive if she stayed too long out underneath the sun. She flinched when she thought of piercings or tattoos; the idea of the pain she’ll receive made her shiver. She loves staying inside her little room, reading a book or watching a documentary about evolution. She loves little knick knacks that are odd to everyone else. She loves listening to classic music but old Japanese music from the ‘60’s are her favorite. She didn’t like showy clothes, long sleeve shirts or pants fitted her just fine.

She didn’t notice that she was already in front of the library till she crashed against the metal doors. Some passerby’s giggled at her misfortunate and she blushed, opening the doors and closing it while ducking her head. As she looked around, she forgot to ask Uzumaki-san how he looks like. Taking out her phone, she was about to tap on the message icon when she felt a tap on her shoulder.

She jumped and twirled around, coming face to face with a 5’10, tan looking, bright, yellow haired male with a large smile and amazingly beautiful blue eyes, twinkling with uncontained happiness.

“Hello there, Hinata!”

She furrowed her brows.

“Uh, it’s Naruto. Ya know, Uzumaki Naruto…”

“Oh!” She blushed and bowed, her mind scrambling about, trying to come back in one piece. “M-My name is Hyuuga Hinata. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Uzumaki-san.”

Naruto scratched his cheek, a light pink blush dusting his cheeks. “Eh, Uzumaki-san? You don’t have to be so formal, Hinata!” He waved his hand and Hinata glanced up only to blush when their eyes clashed.

‘They’re so pretty,’ she thought while biting her lip. Who knew someone had such beautiful mesmerizing eyes.

Naruto coughed and glanced at the metal doors. “Wanna get out of here and talk somewhere more private?”

That was stepping out of her comfort zone, she knew it. All day yesterday, she was debating on whether or not she should come. She wasn’t used to the outgoings or the busy café’s or walking around town. She was used to her own little space, living in her own little world. But this stranger that she met on the web has cracked her small shell so quickly. He made her feel important and that everything she said should never be missed. Her family didn’t treat her as such. So when she saw his eager eyes—nervous like hers but also excited for the future—she was sure that she could take one for the team and face this change.

“Hai, let’s go.”

Years later, Hinata would tell her children that it was thanks to her roommate, Ino, and a chatting website, that she was able to meet her love and husband and their father.

anonymous asked:

i'm so super impressed with your road tripping skills do you have anything to share with us noobs how do i skill up. (i swear i just noticed but bard is kinda road tripping in ITWS isn't he your version seems much more fun)

Hey thanks!! I swear I am also a noob in all honesty, I’m just too dumb to stay home. But I’ve definitely learned a lot over the past two trips so here’s a few things I’ve learned, in no particular order! (and trust me, that section of itws was absolutely inspired by my own travel experiences. first piece of advice, ditch the vampires ;)

One really important thing: the website freecampsites.net was a GODSEND when it came to finding awesome campsites. The website is a major pain to use on mobile but god it’s still so useful. We found some of our favorite places on it and I can’t recommend it enough.

  • Sarah and I basically never paid for lodging, which we managed by boondocking the whole way. Most “official” campsites like the ones you find in national parks will charge you anywhere from 10 to 30 bucks a night. It’s infinitely cheaper (and so much more fun) to camp at dispersed sites which are much more private and remote (though most will not have any facilities beyond a fire pit). Most national forests will have forest roads with camping available. Ask at your local visitor’s center and they’ll give you a giant paper map that will probably save your life.
  • Many national parks (but not all!) have showering facilities, usually coin or token operated. Many RV parks will also let you pay to use their showers (which can be from 4-10 bucks), but we always called ahead to ask. They also sell biodegradable camp soap and solar showers (we didn’t have one but I would definitely consider getting one for my future trips)
  • I loved sleeping in my car; it made everything soooo much easier to just have our bed set up in the back at all times, and to be able to lock ourselves in. But tents are supposedly warmer, and some people prefer them, so don’t be afraid to try either.
  • Also if you’re sleeping in your car, most Walmarts will allow overnight car-camping in their parking lots; if you just need a place to sleep before moving on, it’s a good option to have.
  • On our first 40 day trip we planned our itinerary nearly down to the day. On our next 4 month trip we really didn’t plan at all beyond “do you want to drive to alaska??” “sure man sounds lit!!” What I’m saying is, a little bit of planning goes a long way. Pick out a few places you want to see when you’re still at home and then plan in some extra time to explore other stuff on the way.
  • Bring a hammock. Trust me, it’ll be awesome.
  • I highly recommend bringing a camp stove. We had two, scavenged from the depths of our garages. Mine was like, 20 years old. It started up with no problems after 12 years of disuse. Again, coleman is pretty solid
  • Bring a cooler and plan on making ice a frequent (if not daily) purchase for as long as you’re keeping perishables in it. Drain and wipe it down often because it will get super grody super fast.
  • Don’t rely on your GPS, because if you’re going the kinds of places we went, it WILL crap out on you. Even if it says it has service, it’s not guaranteed to take you to the right place; especially in the backroads.
  • If you can afford it, invest in an Annual National Parks Pass and then hit those bad boys up. The pass itself is totally worth it because it basically ensures that you see as many parks as you can in order to get your money’s worth, and you won’t regret a single one
  • Bring car chargers (the cigarette lighter kind are great, or if your car is nicer than mine maybe it just has a usb port) and at least one portable cell charger.
  • If you have a dog, bring him with you and have him wear a lil red bandanna. This is based on personal longing rather than personal experience
  • Always keep more water with you than you think you’ll need. Sarah and I had 3 gallon jugs and a bunch of smaller containers in the car at all times. You’ll use it for washing (yourself and dishes), cooking, drinking, sexy water fights with bears, etc
  • If your car breaks down or gets stuck, keep in mind that AAA does NOT include off-road retrieval in any of its policies to my knowledge, so if you’re not within a ¼ (or possibly ½) mile of pavement you have to pay for that part of the tow.
  • Don’t let your car get much below half a tank of gas, ESPECIALLY in more remote areas. But if you miss the gas station and the needle drops to Empty, you can actually keep driving for a ways further before the engine actually stops. I think we made it like 40 miles between hitting empty and reaching the gas station, but I spent that whole drive white-knuckling the steering wheel with my eyes fixed on the mile gauge so I might be inflating that number
  • Before you leave, get a ton of podcasts, books on tape, new music, etc. You will go through it all faster than you can believe.
  • If you see a guy with a handlebar mustache riding a red motorcycle at the main campsite in the badlands, SPIT UPON HIS ANCESTORS
  • If you buy a laptop charger you can play dragon age in the middle of the woods like a real fancy lad
  • I just scrolled up and realized how insanely long this was getting so I’m gonna make myself stop

A lot of these are based on my own personal experience or just kind of dumb, so if you’re planning a trip of your own I recommend just googling around a bit for more general advice about boondocking and car camping.

I think the most important thing is to be bold, and just take the leap. You have to be aware of the risks; people die on the roads, in the woods, in national parks. It isn’t safe. But if you accept the risk, it’s absolutely 100% worthwhile.

@margotkim feel free to chime in if I’m forgetting something essential :’)

2014 In Review

2014 has been one of my best years ever. The amount of things I’ve accomplished this year has been truly awesome and something that I hope continues and spills onto next year and hopefully several years to come :D

In addition to listing some of my accomplishments, I’ll follow it up with what I would like to see accomplished in 2015, and maybe when 2015 is up, I’ll be proud to say some of these things will be achieved! :D

  1. Subscribers: YouTube being what my life mostly revolves around, It’s always nice to see my subscriber growth over the past year. Capndesdes has gained 355,369 SUBSCRIBERS IN ONE YEAR! Thats fucking amazing :D I’m pretty close to cracking into the 1MILLION range!! DesandNate over the past year grew 158,017 to put it at 879,000 TOTAL! Finally, little Despwns grew 32,407 to get it JUST PAST 100,000!! :D All in all, an amazing year for YouTube, I hope all three channels continue to grow exponentially next year.
  2. WTF NEWS: This year has been great to me in the fact that I have started a new show with Shane Dawson called WTF NEWS! it goes up every week on his channel, and was a big factor for the subscriber growth on my own channels as WELL as shane’s! The lone factor that Shane saw how hard I worked on my videos and saw my passion and humor to be good enough to be on his channel is absolutely an honor.
  3. THE ALBUM: A HUGE undertaking, and a huge chunk of my life was dedicated to making MY FIRST ALBUM! Though it isn’t technically released yet in 2014, The production of it 100% took place in 2014, and I’m so damn proud of every song that was released. Even if no one buys it, I’ll still be jamming out in my car to my own music, which is a great feeling. I guess we’ll see how it does in 2015!!
  4. THE HAIR: Although I’ve had my crazy hair for 6 years, I decided to change it up and cut it all off! Though the reaction was mixed, and even more so from my OWN reaction, I’m proud to say I had the courage to do it! I guess we’ll see how my hair progresses this year!
  5. THE MOVE: After living in Orlando FL for 4 years, I finally got sick of the nasty weather, humidity and no seasons and decided to move to Portland Oregon with my girlfriend! It was a huge step because this would be my first time living without Nathan in over 4 years!! So far I love Portland, and am glad to call it my home.
  6. MINECRAFT: In 2013, I had a minecraft server which was a tit load of fun. After almost an entire year of the server being down because of a hacker, I decided to get it up and running again, making it bigger and better than ever. Separate worlds, a ranks system, amazing admins, the server is definitely a giant accomplishment of mine from 2014.
  7. STREAMING!: 2014 has been the first year I was comfortable enough to LIVE STREAM on the internet! I took to twitch, and in a few short months, made an awesome habit of streaming a couple times a week! To this day, I have over 6,000 FOLLOWERS on twitch, which is quite amazing for such a short time! Thanks to my viewers for making it possible!
  8. TWO YEARS OF LOVE: Breaking down the belief that I would be forever alone, 2014 was the SECOND YEAR I have been with my lovely lovely girlfriend, who has constantly been an encouraging factor in my life, propelling my dreams and goals, and being next to me in times my self esteem and confidence was shaken. If words could only describe how much I love you.
  9. CALCIFER!: MY FIRST CAT! I had never actually OWNED a cat. Being able to call an animal companion MINE. I had two dogs that my family owned, and 3 cats that my family owned, but little obese calcifer has been my first cat! She was just a tiny little baby when we first got her, but has now grown into a giant raging bitch!
  10. ADVENTURES GALORE!: I finally left my cave and decided to go adventuring out into the world! Before we left Orlando, I went to Universal Studios and Disney for my very first time and had a fuck ton of fun. Also attended Playlist live for my 4th consecutive year and played a KICKASS show on stage! Since I’ve been in Portland, I’ve gone to several hockey games, Ikea MULTIPLE times, Archery parks, taken cool pictures dressed up as an elf lord, gone to the mall, and checked out the awesomeness of downtown Portland! :D
  11. POSSESSIONS!: Super happy I’ve only been possessed by 3 demons this year! Just jokes. As far as POSSESSIONS goes, I’ve gotten a lot of cool new stuff. A TON of new clothes, new action figures, a WIIU, Ps4 AND Xbox One, and a ton of games for them, A new apartment, The Orcrist Sword from the Hobbit, a new couch, and a ton of other cool shit!

AND that is pretty much it for my 2014! As you can see, it was pretty crazy, Lot of amazing things. So as for my hopes for 2015, Here’s just a few:

MY GOALS: This year, I would LOVE to see the following things closer to realization.

  • Voice acting career
  • A paid editor for some of my videos
  • a paid designer for merch
  • Decent management who gives me awesome opportunities
  • For Sovndwave.com to get huge. (website I helped make)
  • NEXUS. Been long overdue for my store to open!

Along with a few hopes for the upcoming year:

  1. Continue to grow on YouTube: I know I have it in me to be an active and formidable member of the YouTube community. I’m tired of being one of those background youtubers, that you KNOW about, but don’t watch. I want to show the world I can be a great youtuber. I’d like to focus on Capndesdes and Despwns, hopefully making my gaming channel a force to be reckoned with. DesandNate is hard to do because without Nathan, what is it, really? I’d also like to continue doing WTF NEWS, I highly enjoy it :P
  2. Music: I have NO IDEA how my album will be received, but I really hope people love my music and I hope this album gives a ton of opportunities in the future. Doing a second album, helping Tommy with a 2-person-band, anything like that.
  3. Appearance: Im not really sure what will happen with my hair and stuff. It’s actually strange, because with short hair, I almost don’t feel like I’m myself. It’s like there’s two combatting forces inside of me saying “look like this!” “NO! LOOK LIKE THIS” and it’s tough. I hope in the end, I make my hair a way that makes me happy. I also hope to get a few Tattoos this year! It’s been too long since my first one. GO NUTS. Though also I’ve been really great at working out lately, I really want to get hella sexy so when I’m shirtless, my girlfriend stares at me all sexually. LOL WUT.
  4. Settings: Now that I’m here in Portland, I feel much happier. I think this next year I’ll continue to live here only MAYBE in a different apartment eventually. My fucking neighbors make it IMPOSSIBLE to film sometimes because of the creaking fucking floors, so. FINGERS CROSSED!
  5. MINECRAFT: I would love for my Minecraft server to continue to grow like the plague. It’s a really fun server because of the amount of personalities that are on it usually, but I’d love for more people to get on so that we could receive more donations and ranks so our lovely admins can get paid for their awesome work!
  6. Streaming: I really want to get a more consistent viewer base on Twitch. I want people to watch me because I play awesome games, with NO (lol) technical difficulties, I’m funny, and I’m not asshole ugly. Let’s hope this happens!!
  7. Adventures: Though life is one giant adventure, I’d like to be able to travel this year. To see sights I’ve never seen. Experience things I’ve never done. Grow closer to my best friend, Explore opportunities that  come my way. All in all, I just want 2015 to be a year, like this one, that I can look back and say “I have done amazing things.”
Stockholm Syndrome [Part 2]

Calum imagine based off of the song by 1D, part of the Four Series. The 3rd and final part will be out Sunday!

[Part 1]

The next morning I awoke as I tried to pull my arm down to my side. I sighed as I looked and saw that I was still cuffed to the headboard. I glanced down to a tanned arm thrown over my waist and looked to the boy sound asleep next to me. His hair was disheveled and his face as innocent as his touch last night. I felt my stomach begin to warm up as I stared at his naked body. I let my free hand lightly trace over his skin. I don’t know exactly what happened last night, what it meant, or why it happened, but I didn’t regret it. For once I felt completely confused by my own feelings, but I was in love with this boy. He treated me badly and did horrible things, but once he let me see his kind eyes and gentle touch I fell in love within just one night. I could only imagine what anybody who knew everything that happened and saw from the outside would think, but I didn’t care.

Hello *waves*
  • True story: I’ve been locked out of my Tumblr account for nearly a week! Because I never log out I somehow forgot my password, and then the pw reset didn’t work, and oh jeesh, that was a boring story, but here I am.
  • New job! I got a new job! It’s pretty awesome so far.  The first day was terrifying (as they always are), but everyone made me feel so welcome.  I started the morning off with a trip to the Apple store to buy a new computer - which is always fun, and then we all went to lunch together, which was nice (there are 8 people in the company - wahoo for startups).  It was actually my least scary first day ever.  And the more I hear about our product, the more I love it.
  • With the new job, came a new commute - a 14 minute door to door subway commute. The people watching is ohhhhh so fantastic.  But Toronto folks, holy hell, give pregnant women seats! I’ve already seen so many people pretend not to notice the pregnant lady looking for a seat. Oh! And to save some money  (each way is $2.80), and to lose some lard, I’m going to try to walk home two or three days a week (about a 45 minute walk).
  • What else?  I had nearly two weeks off between jobs and only spent one full day with nothing to do. Pro Tip: when/if you get time off between jobs, don’t cram all the things in during that time. Because yikes, it went by far too quickly.
  • During that time off I went to Boston (although I wasn’t actually in Boston that long), as we rented a car and drove to Cape Cod, and spent two nights in Martha’s Vineyard. I have a folder of photos up to my hoo-ha, so I’ll pop in later to actually post about it.
  • I did a coding course through Ladies Learning Code and felt so inspired by all the women mentors and teachers.  I’m just playing around with html and css (nothing too fancy!) to build a basic website for myself. Truthfully my brain doesn’t really think like a coder, so it takes me a while to understand things, but I really do love it, and it’s neat to understand how those websites out there are put together!
  • I went to Kingston, Ontario (about 3 hours east of Toronto) to visit my brother.  It’s where I went to university, and holy hell, the college kids looked so YOUNG. I felt old.
  • I went horse riding a lot.
  • I got a sewing machine, and am planning on starting to quilt! I want to make Lily/my sister a pink/white quilt for Christmas.
  • On my time off I did not: do laundry, tidy my apartment, declutter, review my life as I had planned. This meant the Sunday before New Job started, I was running around like crazy.
  • I did stick to Weight Watchers consistently (I did it about 75% of the time), however I didn’t gain weight from my Boston (eat and drink all the things) trip, and/or losing my routine, which made me happy. Tonight at 6:30 I’m heading to my first actual Weight Watchers meeting (previously I was doing it online), which I’m excited about.
  • I also had this professional (like for reals, think America’s Next Top Model) photoshoot thing for my New Job.  And… I WAS SO AWKWARD. It was actually the worst.  I felt so uncomfortable in my own skin, and didn’t really like any of the photos (the photos are for the company’s website, and so we all have nice LinkedIn photos). But yea… no. I didn’t like it at all. And let’s not beat about the bush, it was pretty much because of my weight. I felt HUGE. And it sucked. And I didn’t recognize myself. But hey oh, see the previous bullet point, because onwards and downwards!
  • And finally, here’s a look at my new desk view… which is not distracting at all! :)
