I don't really have any prompts, but if you look up the Jamilton tag on @midnigtartist's blog, you might get a few ideas! Aimee is complete Jamilton trash, loves the heck outta them

I did just that! The prompt/feeling I got from that is “Jefferson actually likes kids and takes care of Philip for a day when Hamilton loses track of him, causing Hamilton’s entire view of Jefferson as a person to shift”

@midnigtartist Happy birthday! I was already writing this before I learned it was your birthday, but I hope you enjoy it regardless! You’re art is great! Also, I sent you an ask about this but severely underestimated the size of your inbox. If/when you see the anon that sounds suspiciously like this post, feel free to ignore it!

As much as he’d like it to be the case, Thomas did not at first recognize the kid loitering around the office. He did however, recognize that the kid couldn’t be more than 10 years old, if that- and was therefore too young to be standing around anywhere, never mind outside the ‘Washington and Associates’ law firm.

It wasn’t quite time to pack up, but Thomas figured this was more important. Plus, no one else was dealing with it, or even noticing. He saved his work, and stood up.

“Leaving early?” James poked his head up, at Thomas’ movement.

“There’s a kid hanging around outside, it’s distracting,” Thomas explained. James peeked out the window, furrowed his brows, and nodded.

“Don’t take too long,” James reminded, turning back to his work. Thomas rolled his eyes and nodded, even though he knew James’ attention was already back to his work.

The kid jumped when Thomas opened the door, immediately turning around and looking down as if he just happened to be standing there. It wasn’t very convincing.

“Hi,” Thomas pitched his voice, warmer and completely devoid of his usual sarcastic drawl. “You’ve been standing out here for a while, is there anything I can help you with?” Up close, the kid was even smaller. The parents had better be nearby, or Thomas would be having words.

“Uhh,” The kid’s head bobbed up, then straight down, his mass of curls hiding his face. Thomas felt his heart thaw, just a bit- the kid was just shy. Which was fair, given Thomas was a tall, mysterious stranger. Even adults tended to be intimidated. Thomas leaned down, dropping to the kid’s level.

“That’s okay,” Thomas tried to put the kid at ease. “Could you tell me where your parents are, so we can find them?”

“Umm,” The kid started again, but this time he brushed his hair behind an ear and glanced up to Thomas’ chin. “Mom’s at her home, I’m s'posed to be with Dad this week, and he’s s'posed to be here. I think.” He nervously glanced up at the building. “There’s only one Washington law place, right?”

Ah, a divorced kid. “Yes, as far as I’m aware, this is the only Washington law place,” Thomas didn’t want to correct the kid and possibly confuse him. Still, he couldn’t stop an amused smile at the term ‘law place’. “Can you tell me your Dad’s name?”

The kid froze, paling instantly. “U-uh, it’s my Dad, um…” He started shaking. Crap.

Thomas thought quickly. “It’s okay, it’s okay!” He smiled wide, waving his hand in what he hoped was more comforting than dismissive, though he used it in the latter sense far more often. “Could you tell me your name, instead?”

“Oh!”, the kid grinned. “My name’s Philip Hamilton! I’m 8 years old!” Thomas nearly flinched. There was only one Hamilton who worked at Washington’s, and there was no way this was a coincidence. He should have guessed- Hamilton’s divorce was well known in lawyer circles, and now that he was looking for it, the kid’s face bore some resemblance. Standing in front of Thomas was his biggest work rival’s son.

There wasn’t anything for it, though. Thomas was hardly going to just leave the kid out here. “Nice to meet you, Philip. I work with your Dad. My name’s Thomas Jefferson.”

Philip’s eyes lit up in recognition. Thomas had just enough time to worry about what exactly the kid was recognizing. “Jefferson? Dad mentions you all the time! He says you’re really distracting!”

Distracting, huh? Not 'evil’, not 'idiotic’; nor any of the other insults Hamilton would shout to his face? Not even 'bad man’, if he wanted to soften it to his kid? Thomas itched to ply Philip for answers, for what Hamilton really thought; but it was the middle of winter and now was not the time.

“How about we wait inside for your Dad, and you tell me what you’re doing out here?” Thomas spoke cautiously, not sure how Philip would react to being asked to go somewhere with a relative stranger.

Strangely though, Philip’s shyness went straight out the window after his introduction. “Oh! That’s because Dad promised me this time, for real promised, that he’d get off work on time and take me to see a movie! I wanted to make sure he really would, so I looked up 'Washington law’ on google and bussed here all by myself!” Thomas led the way to the building as Philip chattered, small hand immediately latching onto Thomas’ fingers.

“That’s very cool!” Thomas enthused, opening the door and immediately shooting a glare at every person who stared. “Now, your Dad’s out now, the boss sent him to the courthouse to drop something off, but we can wait for him, alright?”

Philip beamed. “Alright! This place looks even cooler than I thought!” He was so enthusiastic, that Thomas couldn’t help but smile back. Hamilton would still be getting an earful, being so unreliable that his 8 year old child felt the need to escape his babysitter and bus through the middle of town to check up on him. Hell, did he even have a babysitter?

Thomas’ work was left, forgotten on his desk. James would clean up for him, this was more important. “What do you say to meeting your Dad’s boss?” He needed to at least explain the situation, after all.

“Mr. Washington? Yeah! Dad says he’s too nosy, and Mom says he’s basically like my second grandpa, even though I’ve never met him before.”

Thomas couldn’t stop the chuckle if he tried. “Did he? You’ll have to tell me more, later.” He joked, but Philip nodded anyways. This was far better than finishing his work.

Alex was determined to keep his promise, for real this time. He was not staying late, and if possible, he would even be home early. Washington owed it to him, for all that free overtime.

Unfortunately, all the owing in the world meant nothing when Washington ordered him to take some important documents to the courthouse, a good half hour away, when the day was nearly over. Alex could never say no to a direct request like that, even if Washington probably would have relented if he explained his circumstances.

No, he could do this and still be out on time, if he drove straight to Philip’s school, instead of back to the firm, first. Alex did so, driving as fast as he reasonably could.

Only, when he did that, Philip had already left, instead of waiting for him. In fact, he had left for the washroom in the last hour of class, and never returned, according to the teacher. Alex barely spared the time to chew them out for not keeping a better headcount, and then he was running off to his car and to home.

Philip wasn’t at home either. Alex started panicking in earnest. He could be anywhere, but why would he? Philip was so excited about going to see the movie, he wouldn’t have just run off today of all days, would he? But he alternative- if Philip hadn’t purposefully run off himself- was far worse. Alex started by doing circles of the neighbourhood, then the local parks.

Alex was focused; so focused that his phone remained in his pocket, battery dead before he’d even realized Philip was missing.

It must have been hours later, the sun starting to set, when Alex finally gave up. He had panicked somewhere early down the line, and never quite stopped. His limbs were shaking. Alex had lost his son.

He didn’t want to even think about the phone call he would have to make to Eliza. But first, he’d check the house again, just in case. Alex wasn’t holding out much hope at this point.

Alex was just stressed enough to miss the strange car behind his in the driveway. He was not, however, too stressed to notice two people sitting in his living room.

“Hamilton, about time!” Jefferson waved his arms enthusiastically, though something sharp glinted in his eyes. Alex’s brain stuttered for a moment at the sight of his coworker/rival relaxing in his home, but then Philip was bounding into his arms.

“Dad! Where the heck where you? Mr. Jefferson’s called you like, a million times!”

“Wha- Philip, where have you been? You weren’t at school, the teachers told me you disappeared, you weren’t at home, I’ve been worried sick, looking for you!” Harsh, panicked words spilled from Alex’s mouth, even as he seized his son in a fierce hug. “Don’t scare me like that!”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to,” Philip hugged back tight, voice suddenly subdued and guilty. “I just wanted to find you at work, so you’d actually go on time.”

Alex loosened his hug so that he could face Philip directly. “Wait, you what-?” Alex cut himself off, remembering the other person in the room. “Jefferson, why the fu-heck are you here?” Philip’s head poked up at Alex’s accusatory tone, brows furrowing in confusion.

“Nice save,” Jefferson smirked, always as irritating as possible. “Also, is that really the way you want to be speaking to the guy who’s been watching your kid all evening? When I could have been doing anything else with my time?”

There was no reason for Jefferson to be lying. In fact, that answer made the most sense, given that Jefferson had literally been in his home, watching Philip, when Alex got in there. Still though, this was Jefferson. Instinctive denial surged in his chest. “Excuse me-”

“I’m sorry!” Philip shouted again, lip trembling. He wasn’t looking at Alex though, instead facing Jefferson. “I didn’t mean to waste your day!”

Alex’s blood ran cold. That was exactly the opening one could never make to Jefferson- he could never hold back his infuriating sarcastic comments. He was going open his mouth and spout some negative bullshit that would make Philip cry, because Jefferson was an asshole who didn’t have any kids and probably hated them.

Jefferson did open his mouth, but his eyes were suddenly wide, with surprise and maybe guilt- something Alex had never seen him wear. He scrambled off the couch. “No no, I didn’t mean that, Philip! You’ve been great fun!” Jefferson assured, stepping over to crouch in front of Philip.

Philip looked up at him cautiously. Alex held his breath, completely taken aback. “Really?”, Philip whispered, and Alex could hear the tiny smile working its way into his voice.

“Of course!” Jefferson reached a hand over to ruffle his hair. “I got to read all your poems, and you got to hear all about the silly things your Dad does at work! It’s just that your Dad’s back now, so I should probable get going.” He gave Philip a wide grin, full of warmth and life.

Alex wasn’t sure he’d ever seen Jefferson with a smile like that. It did something to his stomach that he’d rather not analyze.

“No! You gotta stay for supper! We can’t do the movie anymore anyways, right Dad!” Philip bounced back, both emotionally and literally, on the balls of his feet.

Alex opened his mouth, searching for an excuse that wouldn’t upset Philip. Then, he glanced over to Jefferson. He was fidgeting, glancing away awkwardly. With a start, Alex realized he must have actually had fun. Somehow, Jefferson was actually really good with kids, if Philip’s excitement meant anything; and now he was standing there, in Alex’s house, looking more awkward and vulnerable than Alex had ever seen him.

“Yeah… yeah, he can stay. If he wants to.” Alex didn’t even want to guess what his face looked like right now. He wasn’t even sure what his feelings looked like right now. It was all a mess of exposed wires, his entire worldview turned on its head.

Jefferson flinched in surprise for a moment, eyes snapping to Alex. Then, he gauged Alex’s pure, undiluted confusion, and a smile slowly took his face, one that more closely resembled the teasing smirks Alex was used to. Now though, it seemed just a little less aggressive than Alex remembered.

“I suppose I can stay and tell your Dad all about how you skipped your last class, looked up his workplace online, and then bussed there all by yourself without telling anybody.” Jefferson shrugged, nonchalant.

“What! Mr. Jefferson, no!” Philip whined, even as he smiled broadly. “I’m gonna get grounded!”

Jefferson laughed. “Well, whose fault is that? You’re a little troublemaker!”

Philip spouted denials in between giggles. Alex felt his paradigm shift further off axis. “I guess I’ll get started,” Alex said, quiet and distant. He stood up and edged his way to the kitchen. Jefferson and Philip continued to chat in his hallway.

Somewhere between numb and completely unsure of himself, Alex turned the oven on and got out a frozen pizza. He took as much time as he could retrieving the round pan and opening the pizza box. Replaying in his mind was the smile Jefferson had made at Philip. His stomach flipped again.

“Hey,” Jefferson’s voice was calm and subdued, but made Alex jump a foot anyways. “I put the TV on for Philip.” He was right behind Alex, nearly crowding him into the counter. “I assume you want to know what’s been going on? No one’s been on the same page today.”

Alex swallowed. It wasn’t the first time Jefferson had crowded him, Alex had realized over time that it was more a matter of not knowing about personal space, rather than an active bid at intimidation. It was also overwhelming, especially now. “Uh,” Alex started, horrified at the squeak his voice made. “I guess not.”

Jefferson smirked- how could he not?- but relented, backing up a step. “It really wasn’t all that crazy. The kid showed up in the last hour of work, and no one else would do it, so I watched him. Tried to call your phone, I’m assuming it’s dead.” Alex dug into his pocket, pulling out a very dead phone. He paled. “No, it’s fine, it’s done.” Jefferson waved his hand dismissively. “I didn’t- I mean, it wasn’t awful.”

Alex paused at Jefferson’s stutter. His ears were pink. Adorable, Alex thought, then shook it from his mind. “Thank you,” he said instead.

“Uhhh,” Jefferson’s ears turned pinker. “No offense, but that sounds so weird coming from you.” Suddenly, he started laughing. “And I just said 'no offense’, which is even weirder!”

Alex snorted. Giggles stumbled their way between his lips, turning into chuckles, then full blown laughter. “Oh my God,” Alex wheezed, “This is so weird!”

Jefferson was howling right beside him. “I know, right?!”

Their laughs petered off, save for a quiet snicker from the distance. Both their heads whipped around- Philip peeked from the doorway. “Dad hasn’t laughed like that in ages,” He said knowingly. “You guys should hang out more. Hey, can Mr. Jefferson come with us to the movie, next time?”

Alex flushed, his mind stumbling to a stop, not sure if it was from the sheer audacity of the question, or how the idea of going out with Jefferson sounded too much like a date. His only saving grace was that it was probably the last thing Jefferson wanted, anyways. It didn’t matter that the sight of him being so nice to Philip did things to Alex’s heart.

“That sounds nice. If your Dad agrees.” Jefferson gave Philip an indulgent smile, then turned to Alex, question standing.  A quiet blush graced his cheekbones as well. He looked so much more attractive- cute, Alex’s brain supplied- when it was open like this. Usually, Jefferson’s appearance was the only attractive thing about him. Alex realized suddenly that he was gone- had been gone the moment Jefferson had revealed a side of himself that wasn’t pure opposition to everything Alex stood for.

“Alright,” Alex agreed. He needed to see where this was going. He was going to figure Jefferson out, or die trying.

Yet another weekend wrap up!

Another laid-back weekend, I have a lady friend coming to stay with me later this week since my next two weekend are a bit more hectic. I have a uni friend flying to stay with me later this week, we met when she was a foreign exchange student and she’s from Pakistan. The French consulate apparently put her through extra loops so I got us tickets to watch PSG vs Nice as a surprise treat while she is here. Then I’m in London & Birmingham the following weekend.

I was doing 12 hour work days last week so I was exhausted by Friday & I was in bed by 11pm like the whiny toddler I am.

I did cook myself a nice dinner, eggplant Parma & asparagus risotto. I actually enjoy cooking, it’s something I’ve been neglecting over the last year. I have been eating a lot healthier, but I make the same fast & easy meals very week. I never realized I miss trying new recipes so something I’m going to try to do more regularly.

Saturday was a lot of errands, I’ve been on a mission to find some knickknack organizers (makeup, jewelry, etc) that was unsuccessful. However, I discovered Tiger (Cheap Danish store) Fly (French IKEA). I also ate dinner at an Australian bar with an excellent view & tried the flat ice cream, which was nothing special.

I met two American rugby players at the pub where I was watching a band, they we’re both great fun. We hung out for the rest of the night & grabbed late night pizza, which seems to be the culprit of my bedridden Sunday.

Food poisoning, so much food poisoning. Its been a long time since I’ve felt this miserable, but I almost feel human. I’m just starting to feel human again so I’m doing some late night chores, I spent most of my day binging on Peaky Blinders for the first time. We should all take a moment to admire the bone structure of Cillian Murphy.

To all who dare to care, This was my cosplay group for AX 2015! It was so much fun!!!! I created the template for the jackets, but everyone personalized and created their own. I also designed the idea for flareon and Flareon was able to create it herself! (thank god, I’d hate to deal with it) And I did all of my stuff. These are actually phone photos, so half of it’s crappy quality has to be blamed for that, the other half is me sucking at photo editing x) anyways, I hope all enjoy viewing the cosplays as much as i enjoyed making them! Hopeully, we’ll do an actual photo shoot and have good photos, but I’m not holding my breath.

I agree do disagree i think haha, to me Dean did screw the world for Sam and cant live without him. just like Amara as result of Cas unwillingness to let Dean die, to me Deans unwillingness to let Sam finish the trails and killing death are the exact same situations incl the resulting consequences (Amara being ALSO Deans result). Quantitatively theres more stances of Dean putting Sam over the right thing and inabitily to live without him (from trails to actual suicide ) than Cas doing that

Hey, no problem. One of the things I enjoy about this fandom is our different point of views about these characters and why they do what they do.

And, you know, I’m very much in love with the idea of supernatural creatures - particularly vast, boundless, immortal creatures like gods or angels - experiencing feelings only in extreme ways. I guess it’s something that really stuck with me after all those years studying Greek mythology, and now I may be seeing it even when it’s not actually there. Like, to me, Cas being in love with Dean is a very dangerous thing, because Cas doesn’t understand death and pain in the same way humans do - that’s something very powerful in my own corner of Supernatural universe. But I do understand, on some level, that my Cas is very different from the Cas we see on the show, or how supernatural creatures are generally understood in fiction and theology. Some of these differences may be deliberate; others, simply stuff they didn’t think about, or couldn’t do for a variety of RL reasons - I don’t know. I think I wrote something about this stuff before - how, as much as I love Cas, he’s way too human - was from the start. I think writers like Neil Gaiman or Susanna Clarke are much better at nuancing what otherworldy creatures are like - there’s the whole question of how an immortal creature would understand death, or even time, for that matter, and, of course, this illusion that we can apply human ethics and morals to entities we can’t hope to even conceive of, like angels and gods. But, well - this is television, not writing, so you do have more restrictions (I can’t wait to see how they worked around them in American Gods, though), and, on the whole, they’ve all done a very good job with Cas.

So all this to say that I get where you’re coming from, and I don’t think you’re wrong, exactly, but I still feel that Dean, as excessive or obsessive or unhealthy his love for Sam is, is still a human being, which means his feelings are contained in some way (by time, if nothing else), while Cas - Cas is upredictable in this respect. I can’t help but think of Chiron, who gave up his immortality, or Apollo, who knew Troy would fall and his beloved would die, and yet still chose to fight. I wonder what that’s like. I wonder if being loved by such a creature would be a blessing or a curse.

(Mostly a curse, if you believe Greek myths, but still - the awe of it all.)

Oh don’t worry darling... Looking is free.

Though a few people have already guessed this, I’m pleased to announce that I wrote Aurora James’ route in Gangsters in Love.

Get it, MC.

Anyway, on a more serious note, it was nerve-wracking to write another f/f route for Voltage. I worried near constantly and I’m sure I drove a few people crazy with it, but I really wanted to make sure Aurora’s route was as good as it could possibly be!

I’m so excited and relieved to know you all enjoyed her so much, and it was such an honor and a pleasure to write Chance Valentine and Aurora James as the first and last routes to be released for season one!

I know the overlap between “people who want to romance Chance” and “people who want to romance Aurora” might not be very large, but if you enjoyed Aurora at all I really recommend you also give Chance a chance! (No, I’ll never stop making that joke.) There are a lot of intentional parallels between the routes, and I really did view them as “bookends” for season one.

Likewise if you loved Chance, you should definitely play Aurora’s route– she comes on strong, but she’s actually very sweet, sincere, and secretly, just a little nerdy. She’ll treat you right– you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

As always, Thanks Voltage for this incredible opportunity!

Tripping: The Rules I Broke while on Vacation with My POT

Luggage had been checked, shoes and belts had been removed in accordance with TSA guidelines, pit stops at Starbucks and the restroom had occurred, I was nauseous. He and I were going on our first trip together. I had never traveled with a man I was not related to before and had no idea how I was going to make it through the next five days. I’d, of course, scoured the sugar tag looking for advice and was trying to keep as much of it in mind as possible. I needed all the good advice I could get if I was going to make it through the next five days. Or so I thought.

I’m home and happy. So is he. In fact, we’re closer now because of the trip. We’ve set firm plans about things that were only vague conversations before. We’re both more comfortable with each other. We both have more respect for each other. I’m confident when I ask for what I want. He’s more secure with his place in my life and expressing how he feels. I don’t know if we would have accomplished this, if I would have been as happy on the trip if I hadn’t broken the following rules:

  1. I went on the trip too soon. We’d only been seeing each other for a week and he had already told me very seriously that he wanted me to travel with him. The next week he asked for dates that worked best for me and my information so that he could book tickets.
  2. We were gone too long. I’d read post after post of girls saying they would never go away with their SD for more than 2 days. I was horrified. What had I gotten myself into? Would we both survive the trip? Would I hate him when I got home? I woke up every morning that we were away and set the same intention for the day. I will enjoy today. I will bask in the fact that I am in a beautiful place with a man who wants to make me smile.
  3. I didn’t book the tickets myself. If I wasn’t going the spoiled gf route and hadn’t done some digging on him, this isn’t a rule I would have broken. I didn’t mind giving him my birthday. The site we met on gave him my age so he could guess my year of birth and I would have told him the date anyways. I love gifts too much to pass up an opportunity to receive a few dozen. I didn’t mind giving him the address on my license because it wasn’t where I lived currently. If it had been my current address I would have told him I was using my passport and avoided that question altogether. I did have the boarding information and several friends that work for the airline we flew. I knew that if there was any type of emergency I could get home.
  4. We didn’t spend hours apart. I went to the gym and called my best friend and mother every morning. This took roughly an hour and a half of my time each day. The rest of the time, we were together. Yes, you read that right. When the trip was over, did I want to avoid him like the bubonic plague? I actually didn’t. I just wanted to lay in my bed and sleep off the jet lag. I wanted to pretend that someone was going to unpack for me. I’m still avoiding my suitcase.
  5. I didn’t attach myself to his hip either. I wasn’t laboring under the assumption that because he’d brought me down there I had to be his constant companion. He took me to several places that he knew I’d enjoy. While we were there, I experienced those places on my own. I walked and wandered, observed and thought, without him. I would meet him at the exit and on the way to our next destination we discussed our thoughts.
  6. We shared a room. Again, I have never discussed an arrangement with this man. I am not working towards an arrangement. I’m working towards a relationship. With that in mind, I couldn’t demand my own room. That isn’t how things work in the vanilla world. When you go away with the man you’re seeing romantically, you share a hotel room.
  7. And if the mood is right, you sleep with him. The mood was right. I don’t regret doing it. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed it. I don’t think I did it too soon. I don’t think I should have held out for some luxury items.
  8. I wasn’t a siren bent on tempting him at every moment with lascivious delights. I didn’t sleep in my makeup. I’ve got enough acne and acne scars. I don’t see a need to add more. I wrapped my hair in my satin scarf every night and slept in shorts and a tank top that I’d bought a few years ago in Walmart.
  9. I wasn’t bubbly and happy throughout the trip. If something bothered me, I spoke up. If I needed a nap, I said so. When I was hungry, I said so. While I wanted him to have a great time, I knew that would be easier to accomplish if I was happy too. I was never unreasonable or bratty in my expectations but I was firm and clear about what I wanted and needed.
  10. I left Tumblr and the advice I’d been given from the sugar community at home. I left the images from some of the more established girls’ trips at home. I left the idea that I was only supposed to stay in five star hotels at home. We stayed in a few really nice three star hotels with great views. I left the idea of daily shopping sprees for luxury goods at home. Sure, we went shopping but only for items we actually needed and I had him in and out of those stores quickly. I left the idea of daily five star dining at home. He did take me to a five star restaurant but he also enjoyed my teasing as he failed time and again to find restaurants with good food while I found amazing local places.

I was nervous about the trip but it all melted away when I was 30,000 feet in the air and had a bit of an epiphany. This man didn’t know about the rules. He didn’t know about the bowl or the Tumblr sugar community. He didn’t have any expectations. He was a man intrigued by a woman and he wanted to spend more time with her. With me. He wanted me to be happy and he thought this trip would do that. With a man like that, I didn’t need do’s and don’ts. I could throw out all the rules that didn’t concern my safety and just have fun. Just be me. That, in the end, was all he wanted and I was happy to give it to him.

What about you? Do you have any rules that you completely disregard as you continue to sugar?

End up here: Chapter 1

This is the first chapter to my Dan x Reader imagine (:

I changed my mind, there’s no prologue, I thought it was too short, so I just combined it with the first chapter. And also, I wanted to post this now, just because ^.^ I’ll try to post a new chapter every week. Now, enjoy!

- - - - - -

CHAPTER 1: How did we end up talking in the first place?

“Hello Internet,” Dan said, making his infamous hand gesture, while you waited just outside the camera’s view. “so, lately there have been rumours about me dating someone, and actually… some of them are true, so let me introduce you to my girlfriend (Y/full/N)!” At this, you moved into the picture, sitting down next to Dan, waving at the camera shyly.

“Hi,” you said softly, cracking a shy smile.

“So, I imagine you have some questions about us, so we have written them down and we’re gonna inform you guys.”

“This should take a while,” you muttered. Dan chuckled and nodded.

“Yep,” he said, with an adorable smile on his face. “so sit back and enjoy the ride.”

“I know I won’t,” you said, at which Dan glared at you. You looked back at him, no expression visible on your face. You managed to do this for exactly 1.2 seconds before the two of you burst into laughter. After a few minutes, the two of you had calmed down. “You need to cut this out,” you said eventually.

“We’ll see,” Dan answered with a smile. “but anyways, let’s start this.”

“So let’s start with the very first point,” you said. “how we met.”

- - - - -

It was a rainy November day. You were sat in a Starbucks, your laptop in front of you, you favourite drink next to it, earphones in your ears, Muse playing loudly. You took a sip from your drink while looking at the laptop, trying to find your inspiration. You loved writing, but right now, you had absolutely no inspiration to write anything at all. The door opened, unnoticed by you, and two tall figures walked in. They ordered something and looked around in the crowded Starbucks. Everyone wanted to hide from the rain in here. Then, the brown haired man nudged the other in his side and pointed to one of the only tables where they could sit. It was occupied, but only one person was sat there; someone with (H/L), (H/C) hair, a (F/C) sweater, staring at a laptop. The black haired male nodded and they walked to the table. “Excuse me, could we sit here?” the taller man asked you. You did not completely hear what he said, but you heard a voice, so you paused your music and looked up. Your eyes widened for a second when you recognized the two: Dan Howell and Phil Lester were stood in front of your table, looking at you. “Excuse me?” You managed to ask. Dan repeated his question and you nodded and smiled, you wanted to talk, but you felt like no sounds would escape your mouth, only some weird squeals, and that would be too embarrassing to handle, even for you. “Thanks,” Dan smiled when he sat down, Phil next to him. With a sigh, you closed  your laptop, knowing that you would not be able to write anything. You were, quite honestly, trying to work on a fanfiction containing certain YouTubers - and quite coincidentally, they were seated in front of you - and if they would see, it would be awkward, to say the least. “What’s up?” Phil asked, while you removed the earphones from your ears. “I was trying to write, but I did not really know anything to write,” you answered softly. “What were you writing?” Phil continued, genuinely interested.

“Fanfic,” you answered. It felt as if your cheeks started burning with a bright red colour. Oh gosh, how awkward this conversation would probably turn out. “Do you write a lot?” Dan asked, probably spotting how awkward you felt with that subject. You nodded. “Yeah, I love it,” you answered with a smile. “I do it whenever I can. It’s a way to escape reality.“ “What do you mean with that?”

“This society is quite fucked up, people have to be afraid to walk outside. People fear for their lives because of their sexuality, the colour of their skin, gender or religion. I hate that. And I can escape this society by writing about worlds were that doesn’t exist, and that’s why I love writing. And because it’s great.”

You talked to the two YouTubers for a while, until the rain had stopped and you had to leave, you still had to buy a few things you needed. When you got up and prepared to leave, Dan stopped you. “(Y/N), wait,” he said, getting up himself (yes, he had asked you for your name, I forgot to tell) “I, and I’m sure Phil as well, would love to stay in touch with you, ehm, if it’s okay?” A grin appeared on your face.

“Sure,” you said. You tore a piece of paper out of the notebook you always carried with you, got out a pen and wrote down your number. “Here you go.” you said, while handing down the paper. “I really need to go now though. It was lovely meeting you, ehm well..bye!” You waved and hurried outside, determined to reach the shops in time. In your head you kept replaying what just happened. You actually met Danisnotonfire and Amazingphil! The rest of the day, you had a smile on your face that could not be erased.

Top Five Tuesday: Exploring Expeditions

Let’s share a collective sense of jaw-dropping awe at the beauteous art that adorns the Zendikar Expedition lands.

*drools*

These twenty-five super-duper-mythic-rare foils will crop up in Battle for Zendikar booster packs about as often as any other foil mythic rare. I’m writing this article long ahead of time, but I’m just going to assume I opened both a Misty Rainforest and a Breeding Pool at the prerelease this past weekend. Feels great!

Whether or not that happens has little bearing on today’s article, which is going to be a look at my top five pieces of Zendikar Expeditions art. Well, sort of. All five artists who worked on this expansion deserve a tremendous amount of credit, so instead of just ranking my favorites out of the entire twenty-five, I’m going to pick my favorite from each artist. They’re not in any sort of order, so just enjoy the art for art’s sake.

Titus Lunter: Cinder Glade

It’s time to restate that I’m a sucker for volcano art. I’ve even claimed to be a fan of Lunter’s volcano art more than once. His illustrations of the Qal Sisma volcanos for Dragons of Tarkir made my list of favorite Mountains and favorite Forests. So imagine how pumped I am that one of the Expeditions lands is a Lunter volcano.

Volcano bias aside, something this card does really well is exhibit the verticality of Zendikar’s landscape. This is a plane with land that doesn’t just stretch far and wide; the roil makes geography stretch in three dimensions. We can see some of the floating land masses characteristic of Zendikar’s bizarre gravity, but the real victory here is the summit of the volcano. The peak doesn’t stop at the crater, but instead rises above and hooks over it. It gives the illusion that the volcano is erupting out of the middle instead of the top. That’s something unique to Zendikar’s landscape (and Magic’s world building in general).

There’s tremendous depth in this piece as well. We have floating masses in the top of the frame that are very close to us. The layering in the landscape cascades into the background, with a few masses (and clouds!) behind the volcano itself. It gives the piece a sense of realism; this looks like a place that actually exists. This depth also adds to the piece’s vastness; Zendikar is a wilderness that is yet to be explored.

Véronique Meignaud: Polluted Delta

I adore Meignaud’s landscape art. Her cycle of full-art basic lands from Zendikar are my favorite cycle of basic lands in the game. The Island and Forest of that cycle are my two favorite basic land pieces in the entirety of Magic. I was a little bummed when Meignaud didn’t illustrate more basic lands in Battle for Zendikar, but the fact that she illustrated one of the land cycles in Zendikar Expeditions easily makes up for that.

My favorite aspect of Meignaud’s art is her use of vibrant colors. Polluted Delta is no different, incorporating cerulean cyans and rusted reds to create an image where color and shape join together in stunning unison. The mountains on the left are almost black, contrasting the white steam vents on the right bank of the river.

There’s a great deal of movement in this piece as well. We obviously have the river flowing directly towards us (unusual composition that is effective here), but the mountain on the left and shore on the right make the piece slope downwards from left to right. The geysers on the right also shoot the eye straight up…and to the right out of frame? It’s weird, but so is Zendikar’s geography. I’ve always enjoyed that Meignaud’s lands often break compositional conventions to make your eyes work to figure out what’s going on. It’s been a fantastic trait to pair with Zendikar’s impossible landscapes.

Ryan Yee: Misty Rainforest

Yee has been illustrating Magic cards for a few years now, and his work has been impressive in a variety of aspects. Color, perspective, shape, movement, tone; he’s nailed them all. I’m very glad he was hired for a cycle of Zendikar Expedition lands.

Let’s forget Zendikar for a moment and look at this piece. It’s not that unlike something you could find on Earth. We’re peering out from the thick jungle upon cascading waterfalls. A lone tree grows from the precipice; life thrives wherever it wants. There’s certainly a serenity here, a lone tree framed by the foliage in our peripherals.

A lone hedron behind the tree brings us back to Zendikar. But it’s hidden by nature; the hedron is in disrepair and overgrown by moss. Is this an image of a Zendikar free from the Eldrazi? A Zendikar where the hedrons are no longer needed? A Zendikar that can thrive once again? I like to think that this is some idyllic version of the plane that is free from the Eldrazi’s reign.

Even the scale birds are vibrant and alive! Scale birds are usually illustrated black or white, as they’re often too small to bother showing detail. But in this exotic image they’re brilliant. These birds are exist for the sake of their own beauty, not to show how imposing the Eldrazi are. This is Zendikar as it should be.

Min Yum: Watery Grave

If you’ve never been deep inside a cave before, I highly recommend finding one and taking a tour. There’s no experience that comes to close to replicating the feeling of being hundreds of feet underground in the darkest darkness inundated with moistness and ghostly silence. Even within the large caverns, there’s a sense of claustrophobic isolation because you can’t actually get to most of the places you can see. When I look at this Watery Grave art, those are the memories that are stirred up.

We know some of the Kor have retreated to Zendikar’s caverns, seemingly escaping the Eldrazi threat by taking up residence in the twisting turning bowels of the plane. We get that in this art too. There are some hedrons in the background, floating around the entrance to this cavity. But they get easily lost in the jagged rock formations that jut out from the walls and up from the floor. There’s a sense that Zendikar is out there, and that we’re safe in here.

Yet, how are we supposed to get out of here? Those cave feelings I talked about creep into my mind, and I second-guess the decision to climb down here. If even the Eldrazi can’t get in, what makes me think I can get out? Did I just venture into my own tomb? Is this central column the titanic headstone of my ignorance? This piece is simultaneously secure and hostile.

The actual visual here is also quite pleasant to look at. Once again we have Zendikar’s verticality being brought into play, but from the surface down instead of up. The central column heavily reinforces that dimension, making us feel even lower in the earth than we thought. I always enjoy the lighting that comes with the cave-out view. It twists standard lighting design on its head, placing the light source back in the image instead of the front. Very cool.

Noah Bradley: Breeding Pool

Why hasn’t your mind been blown by Bradley’s art yet? Yes, you. The person who looks confused right now. Go check out the cards he’s illustrated in his burgeoning Magic career. Come back bathed in wonderment. Then we may begin to conclude this article.

I constructed this article in such a way that I would end on this piece, as it’s my favorite of all twenty-five cards. This is unrelated to my affinity for Green/Blue cards.

Much of what I said about Yee’s Misty Rainforest can be said about Bradley’s Breeding Pool. It invokes the idea of a post-Eldrazi Zendikar that has forgotten the pain of the Eldrazi. Sure, that hedron is still there, but it’s fallen into the pool below and been left to gather moss. Unlike Yee’s piece, this one is superficially Zendikar. We’ve got loopy terrain, floating land masses, and cascading waterfalls.

And look how far away those floating islands are. I often talk about depth in art, as it’s one of my favorite techniques to immerse a viewer into a still image. Bradley nailed it. We see the violet flowers right in front of us trail off down the shoreline. Then back to the hedron. The cliffs aren’t much farther behind, but then they too begin to dimish into the distance. The cascades are farther still. The floating islands wallow as far back as our eyes can penetrate the mists. There is a totality of placeness here that epitomizes the vastness of Zendikar’s terrain, both vertically and horizontally.

If I am lucky enough to open a single Zendikar Expeditions card, I desperately hope that Breeding Pool is the one I acquire (My premeditated assumptions in the introductions are unlikely to exist outside of my dreams.)

Twenty-Five Down, Twenty to Go

Just when you were picking your jaw up from the floor, you realized that we still have twenty more Zendikar Expeditions lands coming in Oath of the Gatewatch. We know literally nothing about them other than the fact that they will exist. This is certainly one of the craziest promotions Wizards has ever done, short of the Hidden Treasures from the original Zendikar set. If they’re even half as good as this first wave, we’re in for quite a treat.

So how about you, planeswalkers? Which are your favorite pieces of Zendikar Expeditions art so far?

35 Photos of Iceland

At the end of February (2014), I took a solo trip through Iceland to decompress from work and stretch my eyes outside of Washington, DC. Why Iceland? Well, I’m somewhat drawn to extreme climes, had a yearning to see the northern lights, and I love learning about science and history. Iceland has plenty to offer on all those fronts. There is a huge viking influence on the culture and tradition, even the architecture and design. And it’s no secret the country is also known as “the land of fire and ice,” volcanoes drove the evolution of the island’s topography and resources. Contrast that with the near arctic conditions that the country can experience in the winter and it’s a really stunning place to experience.

Here is a collection of 35 images that made during my trip. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I did shooting them.

Tourists at the foot of Mýrdalsjökull, a smaller glacial offshoot of Sólheimajökull, one of Iceland’s largest ice caps. Both glaciers lie east of Eyjafjallajökull, arguable Iceland’s most famous geologic formation. The name refers to both the ice cap and the volcano underneath, which erupted in 2010, delaying and canceling transatlantic flights for days. The silt resting on the ice is likely from that eruption, though the entire area has been shaped by volcanic forces over the years. The ridge just behind the small group marks the distinction between the mountainside and the glacier.

Iceland’s most famous tourist attraction, the Blue Lagoon. Contrary to popular belief, the Blue Lagoon is NOT a natural formation, though all of it’s parts are. The mineral rich, naturally hot geothermic water is runoff from a nearby geothermic power plant. Water is vented from a natural spring, with powers the plant’s turbines. The water then continues unaltered into the Blue Lagoon. The popular volcanic and algae scrubs available “poolside” are also all natural, as is the lava field that was flooded for the resort. Located in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

What do you think Jensen meant when he said there wasn't a lot of Dean and Cas in season 9 because imo there definitely was?

I think there were about three different things going on at once when he said that. I mean it’s not like they had any less screen time together in season 9 than they did in season 8. Honestly what it boils down to for me is Jensen started out joking imo when he said he enjoyed it, he had on his Misha face after all…but it sort of ended up with him…idk projecting a bit? Jensen is an incredibly private person, like….incredibly. I’ll try and keep my Cockles tinhatting out of this but…that’s part of it. The lines between Jensen/Misha + Dean/Cas start getting incredibly blurry after a while.

There’s also the case of…Jensen not really understanding our take on Dean and Cas at all? I think how we actually view it in terms of the canon and how he views it are probably more similar than he thinks. Especially with him calling them kindred spirits, and saying Cas finds identity in Dean. :’) For him, and his “secret” comment solidified this in my mind, it’s basically all about a secret sexual relationship to us. There is a massive disconnect between what he thinks we think, and what we actually think.

You’re never going to convince me he doesn’t play Dean as being in love with Cas. There’s just no version of reality where that makes sense to me. But even if he doesn’t, and it all just happens to be massive cockles bleed…it doesn’t matter. He’s not a writer and his personal interpretation of something won’t change the structure of the show, which couldn’t be clearer imo.

Also, cons are glorified pr. Sorry, they just are. It almost feels like he and Jared were encouraged to downplay deancas and play up the brothers stuff even more than usual? Because the end of season 9 was so clear on where Dean and Cas are headed and they want to try and appease everyone at once imo. Like Jensen slipping in that “out of hand” statement when it had very little to do with the actual question makes more sense when you look at it that way.

It’s complicated, Jensen is…complicated…but I love him to death and nothing has changed for me in terms of my hopes for canon. :)

Hello, I hope you are having a lovely day! I just saw BOFA the other day and was very impressed with it and I loved Legolas and Thranduil in this movie, although I thought their ending was slightly unsatisfying-I badly wanted them to hug and make up- I was especially struck with the scene where Legolas steps between his father and Tauriel. I felt like the look on Thranduil's face was so utterly heartbroken because he can't contemplate the thought of hurting his son? What did you think?

Hi! Thanks for the ask :)

Spoilers under the cut!

[SPOILERS SPACE FOR THE HOBBIT: BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES]

I simultaneously loved and hated Legolas and Thranduil’s parts in the movie— loved because we got to have them at all, and hated because my own selfish head-canons are that they love each other dearly, and though they still might in PJ’s universe, it was not expressed outwardly enough for me. I did not expect that Thranduil would hug Legolas, but maaaaan would it have killed PJ to allow them to touch? A touch on the shoulder even?

I have seen BOFA twice now and I did enjoy it more on the second viewing. I also was not as upset by Legolas’s apparent disdain for his father, because I noticed that it really wasn’t that, so much as Legolas blindly trying to love Tauriel.

That scene where Legolas steps between Tauriel and Thranduil was very interesting. After having watched it again, I believe that Legolas was trying to diffuse a volatile situation, not wanting either of the people he loves to come to blows. Both Thranduil and Tauriel were emotionally distraught, Thranduil at seeing the lives of his people lost (for what seems like some white gems which he never actually gets) and possibly for being reminded of his own personal losses suffered in the midst of battle (his father’s death at Dagorlad, 2/3 of his people being killed at Dagorlad, his wife’s death), and Tauriel more obviously being upset about Kili’s life being in danger again and by extension the lives of the other dwarves. And then Tauriel accuses Thranduil of being “loveless” and that must hurt him so much because if she only knew the truth of it, the depth of his heartbreak, then she never would have said such a thing to him.

For whatever reason (I’ll get into my head-canon on this later), Legolas has developed a huge emotional attachment to Tauriel. You’ll notice that Legolas only defies his father in these films in deference to Tauriel. I might be super obtuse, but I noticed the second time around that when the elven messenger comes to summon Legolas back to Mirkwood, Legolas starts to go, fully intending to obey his father. It’s not until he learns that Tauriel is banished and cannot come with him, that he goes against his father’s wishes (which is kinda what happened in DOS too, where Legolas went with Tauriel instead of bringing them back to Mirkwood).

And again in that scene where he comes between them, Legolas does so because it’s clear that they are this close to fighting each other, and let’s face it, Tauriel would lose in a fight against Thranduil.

It might be because I am so attached to my personal notions of what Thranduil and Legolas’s relationship is, that I am unable to view Legolas as anything other than a lovesick puppy in these films, you know, a lovesick puppy that does and says stupid things to impress the girl he likes. It really bothered me how obtuse Legolas was about Tauriel’s feelings towards him.

Let me preface this by saying that the following is my unsupported, very biased “rationalization” of Legolas’s behavior. I want to be clear that I in no way think that PJ & Co. mean this explanation— this is ENTIRELY my own fangirl notions that i am using as a way to rationalize his actions away—

So, I’ve been thinking that maybe Legolas has attachments to Tauriel for a few reasons, one being that it seems as if Thranduil has withdrawn and he was looking for someone to confide and share things with and for one reason or another could not approach his father, and two being that maybe Legolas, having lost his mother and not allowed to talk about it (seems as if mentions of the deceased Queen are forbidden?), began a friendship with Tauriel and began to yearn for a female presence in his life. I don’t mean to say that Legolas is looking or a replacement for his mother, but you know that expression that “girls tend to date men that remind them of their fathers”? I would imagine that maybe a similar thing is happening with Legolas, that maybe Tauriel, on some level that he’s not allowed to talk about or acknowledge, reminds Legolas of his dead mother, and maybe his blind love for her is really just misplaced love. I don’t know. I realize this is grasping at straws, and highly improbable, but it’s how I am able to sleep at night— that Legolas “loves” Tauriel because he’s unknowingly projected the love he has for his deceased mother onto her. I mean, if Legolas was not allowed to talk about her at all, well, those feelings have to go somewhere, right?

I just cannot accept that he is that obtuse, or that he would be so cold to his father without a really good emotional reason.

I think the look on Thranduil’s face was perfect. Lee pace is outstanding in my opinion. To me, that look meant that he was stunned that Legolas would raise a sword to him, that his son would even say “you’ll have to kill me” must be shocking to him, because I’m sure that while Thranduil reveals little, he feels much, and his love for Legolas must be as strong as his love for his wife, and these loves are wound tightly together (because Legolas is a physical representation of their love) and are just as tightly controlled and kept hidden. I think that look was part, “what am I doing?” and “how did everything go so far off the rails?” And in that moment, yes, I think he is heartbroken, that he’s gone so far away from himself that his own son would oppose him— ouch, Thranduil has a wounded heart.
