i actually wanted to use different quotes but i had a better idea for them

Hey Emma 💛 Do you have any advice for procrastination? I also have a hard time concentrating, what do you do (or think I could do) that would help with that?

Hi! I’ve had a few questions like this recently so I’m just going to answer this one and hopefully anyone who asked a similar question will see it! But on with the answer. I think there is a few different reasons why we procrastinate so I’m going to note those down and give a few tips for each. You can obviously apply any ideas that you like regardless of what section I’ve put them under!

1. You’ve got poor work/productivity habits. Generally you leave things until the last minute since you “work better under pressure”. (This is so me, omg.) You probably think you’ll do something after you’ve finished something else, and then never do. You get distracted whenever you’re trying to study and will sit waiting to feel motivated but it never comes. For this I’d suggest:

  • create a productive work environment - choose a space where you will actually work without distractions, organise your study space, have everything you need in easy reach. Surround yourself with things you find motivating such as quotes!
  • write it out - write down a few manageable tasks that you need to do. Writing the actions they require will help you see what you should be doing to complete something, instead of just the overall task. One by one you’ll see yourself getting things done!
  • focus on 20-30 minute periods - generally we lose focus after a while so taking regular breaks can help give you chance to relax and refocus. Apps like Forest allow you to set a timer and will give you off your phone at the same time. Obviously if you’re being productive, don’t suddenly cut that off because it is “time for a break”.
  • use apps/browser extensions to cut out distractions - ones like RescueTime or StayFocusd will block you from checking certain sites.
  • find an accountability partner - pick someone who you can rely on to check on your regularly and see how your tasks are coming along. You can send them your to-do list and then every few hours you can update them with your progress. You won’t want to let them down.
  • use the two-minute rule - if something takes less than two minutes, do it. Don’t make an excuse, just do it. Tasks that are longer you can either delegate or defer. Here is a simple visualisation of what I mean.
  • record your progress - doing a simple “don’t break the chain” in your planner is a great way to see how productive you’re being and therefore get you more motivated to keep it up!

2. You’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Everything seems to be mounting up and nothing seems doable. You don’t know where or how to start. For this I’d suggest:

  • find some help - if you’re feeling like this, it is likely you need some help in some form or another. See if a family member, friend, classmate or teacher (or Google) can help or give you a starting point.
  • tell yourself that getting started is the first step - you don’t need to finish a task in a matter of minutes. Start doing something small. Maybe organise what you need, highlight the important bits of your assessment, or draft an essay plan. The secret to getting ahead is getting started!
  • divide and conquer - figure out what is the overall task that you need to do and split it into manageable parts. For instance with an essay the aim is to write it! Divide it into planning out what you want to write, any references you need, summarising a final draft and then writing each paragraph. By dividing bigger tasks into actionable parts you can reduce the obstacles and get through each part in a more timely manner.
  • reward yourself - create a reward system to celebrate completing a selection of tasks. By rewarding your progress you’ll build an incentive to work and reinforce productivity (great for your self-discipline!).
  • learn to forgive yourself - if you have an off day, that is okay! You can’t expect to see a huge change in a short amount of time. Remember to come back to it later and try again.
  • don’t over schedule - if you’re feeling pressure from the amount of work and then the added pressure of trying to stick to a time limit, you’re just going to go crazy. Set yourself flexible times to get something done instead of being heavily structured. Give yourself time for a break and the ability to change tasks.
  • stick with one task - it can be so tempting to multitask but try not to. Try to keep focus on the what you’re doing until it is done. If you struggle with that, you could write down anything useful that you randomly think about for another task, use a break-time to think about that other task or alternate between subjects/tasks every few hours.

3. You’re a perfectionist. You either don’t want to start something out of fear you won’t get it right or you can stuck on stuck on the small details. There is a pressure to achieve “perfection”. For this I’d suggest:

  • focus on getting started, instead of finishing - it is easy to get overwhelmed thinking about what something is supposed to be like finished if you’re a perfectionist. Take things one step at a time.
  • remember that your perfectionist tendencies aren’t actually improving your work or productivity but hindering you - you’re continually setting yourself unrealistic objects and (like me) probably feel let down by yourself if you don’t reach them. Be realistic and focus on getting it done!
  • accept mistakes - you’ve written something wrong, don’t panic! Cross it out with a single line and move on. Things happen and you have to accept it. You can’t rip up the page every time you do something wrong, even if it is so tempting.
  • put things in perspective - is what you’re beating yourself up about right now going to mean anything in a week, a month, a year? Be honest if it isn’t, is it really worth putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.
  • praise yourself through the process - try not to criticise yourself but recognise your progress.

4. You’re wanting to do something else. You find whatever you’re doing boring. You want it to be over with but don’t want to get started. The ultimate catch 22, right? For this I’d suggest:

  • remember that putting it off isn’t going to make it go away - if you leave it too long you’ll end up getting more stressed about it. Best to get it over with.
  • plan from the get-go - once you know something is coming up (e.g. a test, an assessment, etc) make notes on it! That could be questions, annotations, potential topics, citations, etc. By making the effort to spend time reading through, you’ll save your future self some stress. Especially if it’s a topic you have forgotten. That way your notes act as a reminder so you can get started.
  • set a finish time with a reward - tell yourself that if you finish something by ..am/pm and then you can do something else. Use your self-discipline to not go back on this. Set a realistic time and try to get it complete before. If you can think that you’re doing something fun once it is completed, you’ll be more motivated to get it done.
  • make a structure - for note-taking, it can be overwhelming looking at a textbook and thinking what you’re going to write out. Make a note-taking layout/colour code that works for you and that subject. Mine is here - it just give me an idea of how I’d lay everything instead of going in with no action plan.
  • try to make it fun - this could be using YouTube to learn or starting a study group. Use different methods for memorising information such as flashcards, mindmaps or study guides (like question/answer).
  • make the effort to refocus - if you’re finding something boring and you’re unfocused, walk away for 5 minutes, get a drink and come back. If you’re really struggling, change topics for a while. Find a point where you can finish and start doing something else that is productive.
  • listen to some music - generally music without lyrics are best for focusing. Spotify has a great playlist for studying called ‘focus’. However I find my regular music good for getting me a little more motivated and awake. I also like writing essays to music because I weirdly sort of type in the same rhythm. Funny study hack I’ve found that works for me haha!

I hope that is useful! I must have copied and pasted my whole answer like 5 times just incase my tab reloaded and I lost everything, luckily not! You should also check out this post for smaller motivation tips and tricks! xx

history of the entire world, i guess; a transcript

hi. you’re on a rock, floating in space. pretty cool, huh? some of it’s water. fuck it, actually most of it’s water. i can’t even get from here to there without buying a boat. it’s sad. i’m sad. i miss you. how did this happen? a long time ago, actually never, and also now, nothing is nowhere. when? never. makes sense, right? like i said, it didn’t happen. nothing was never anywhere. that’s why its been everywhere. it’s been so everywhere, you don’t need a “where”. you don’t even need a “when”. that’s how “every” it gets. (pause). forget this. i wanna be something, go somewhere, do something. i want things to change. i want to invent time and space. and i know it’s possible because everything is here and it probably already happened. i just don’t know when to start. and that’s exactly where it started. (background noise) woah. i… paused it. i think there’s a universe now. what’s it made of? quarks and stuff. ah, that’s a thing, in a place. don’t like it? try a new place, at a different Time™. try to stick together because the world is gonna get bigger and emptier. but it’s not empty yet. it’s still very full, and about a kjghpillion degrees. (about no seconds later). great news! the quarks are now happily married in groups of three called a “proton” or a “neutron”. and there’s something else flying around too that wants to join in but can’t cause it’s still to (HOT). (about ten minutes later). great news! the protons and the neutrons are now happily married to each other (some of them even doubled up). (about 380,000 years later). great news, the electrons have now joined in. congratulations, the world is now a bunch of gas in space. but it’s getting closer together and it’s getting closer together and it’s getting closer together. it’s a staaaar. new shit just got made. some stars burn out and die. bigger stars burn out and die with passion! and make some brand new way crazier shit. space dust! which allows newer, more interesting stars to be made, and then die, and explode into even crazier space dust. so now stars have cool stuff around them, like rocks, ice, and funny clouds, which can make some very interesting things. like this ball of flaming rocks, for example. holy shit, we just got hit with another ball of flaming rocks, and it kinda made a mess. which is now the moon. weather update: it’s raining rocks from outer space. weather update: those rocks might’ve had water inside them and now there’s Hot Steam in the sky. weather update: cooler temperatures today, and the floor is no longer lava. weather update: its raining. severe flooding alert: the entire world is now an ocean. volcano alert: that’s land. there’slifeintheocean. what? something’s alive in the ocean. oh cool, like a plant or an animal? no. a microscopic speck! it lives at the bottom of the ocean and eats chemical soup which is being served hot and fresh made from gnarly space ingredients leftover from when it was raining rocks or whatever. oh yeah, and it can do that. it has secret instructions written inside itself telling it how to build another one of itself. so that’s pretty nifty, i would say. tired of living at the bottom of the ocean? now you can eat sunlight. using a revolutionary technique you can convert sunlight into food. taste the sun. side effect: now there’s oxygen everywhere and the sky’s blue. then the earth might’ve been a snowball for a while, maybe even a coupla times. it’s a sponge, it’s a plant, it’s a worm and some other types of weird strange water bugs and strange fish. it’s the Cambrian explosion. “wow, that’s animals and stuff.” but we’re still in the ocean. hey, can we go on land? NoO. why? the sun is a deadly lazer. oh okay. not anymore there’s a blanket. now the animals can go on land. come on, animals, let’s go on land! “nope, can’t walk yet. and there’s no food yet so i don’t care.” (100 million years later) ok, will you learn to walk if there’s plants up here? “maybe,” said some bugs, and fish. “uh. uh. uh.” (five million years later) “ok so i can go on land but i have to go back in the water to have babies.” (idea) learn to use an egg. “i was already doing that.” use a stronger egg, and put water in it, have a baby, on land, in an egg. water is in the egg, baby, in the water, in the egg. works for me. bye bye ocean. aaand now everything is huge. including bugs. wanna see a map of the land? sure. ah fuck, now everything’s dead. just kidding here are the survivors. keep your eye on this one because its about to become the dinosaurs. here’s another map of the land. yeah, it broke apart, don’t worry about it, it does that all the time. here comes a meteor. and the dinosaurs are gone. its mammal time! here come the mammals. look at those breasts. now they’re gonna dominate the world, and one of them just learned how to grab stuff. and walk. no, like, walk like ‘that’. and grab stuff at the same time. and bang rocks together to make… pointed rocks. “ouch.” and set things on fire. “yeouch.” and make crazy sounds with their voice (“gneurshk.”) which can mean different things. that’s a human person. and now they’re everywhere, almost. ice age. what? you can walk over here? cool. not anymore. i guess we’re stuck here now.

let’s review. there’s people on the planet. and they’re chasing their food. fuck it, time to plant some grass. look at this, i control the food now. now everyone will want to be my friend and live near me. let’s all build houses except mine is bigger because i own the food. this is great, i wonder if anyone else is doing this. tired of using rocks for everything? use metal. it’s underground. better farming was just invented in a sweet dank valley right in between these two rivers, and the animals are helping. guess what happens next. more food, and more people who came to buy the food. now you need people to help make the food and keep track of the sales. and now you need houses for people to live in, and people to make the houses. and now there’s more people and they invent things, which makes things better and more people come. and there’s more farming and more people to make more things for more people. and now there’s business, money, writing, laws, power. sociiiety. coming soon to a dank river valley near you. meanwhile, out in the middle of nowhere, the horse is probably being tamed. why is all my metal so lame and lumpy? tired of using lame, sad metal? introducing bronze, made with special ingredient tin from the far lands of tin land. i don’t know, my dealer won’t tell me where he gets it. also, guess what - egypt. meanwhile, out in the middle of nowhere, they figured out how to put wheels on a horse. now we’re getting somewhere. also, china. and did i mention indusrivervalleycivilization. norte chico. the middle east is getting more complicated, maybe because it’s in the middle of the east. knock knock- er, clop clop, it’s the people with the horses? and they made an empire! and then everyone else copied their horses. greeks! ah look, it must be the greeks, or a beta version of the greeks. let’s check in with the indus river valley civilization. they’re gone. guess who’s not gone? china. new arrivals in india. maybe it’s thosehorsepeopleiwastalkingabout or theircousinsorsomething. and they wrote some hymns and mantras and stuff. you could make a religion out of this. there’s the bronze age collapse. now the phoenicians can get down to business. also, can we switch to a metal that’s a little easier to find? thanks. look who came back to israel, it’s the twelve tribes of israel. and they believe in god. just one though, he’s got like a ten step program. here’s some huge heads, must be the olmec. the phoenicians make some colonies. the greeks copy their idea and make some colonies. the phoenicians made a colony so big it makes colonies. here comes the assyrian empire. nevermind it’s the babylonian- median- it’s the persian empire. “wow, that’s big.” ah, the buddha was just enlightened! who’s the buddha? this guy, who sat under a tree for so long that he figured out how to ignore the fact that we’re all dying. you could make a religion out of this. oops, china just broke, but while it was breaking confucius was figuring out how to have good morals. ah, the greeks just had the idea of thinking about stuff. and right over here, alexander just had the idea of conquering the entire persian empire. it’s a great idea, he was…great. and now he’s dead. hopefully, the rest of the gang will be able to share the empire evenly between them. knock knock, it’s chandragupta, he says, “get the hell out of here, will you get the hell out of here if i give you 500 elephants? ok thanks bye; time to conquer all of india- or most of india”. but what about this part? that’s the tamil kings, no one conquers the tamil kings. who are the tamil kings? merchants, probably. and they’ve got spices. who would like to buy the spices? “me,” said the arabians, swiftly buying them and selling them to the rest of the world. hey, china put itself back together again with good morals as their main philosophy. actually they have three main philosophies. out here, the horse nomads run wild and free, and they would like to ransack your city. let’s check the greekification levels of the greekified kingdoms: greekification overload! “bye,” said the parthians, “bye,” said the jews. “hi,” said the parthians, taking over the entire place. “heyyyyyyyy,” said the romans, eating the entire mediterranean for breakfast. “thanks for invading our homeland,” said the jews, who were starting to get tired of people invading their homeland. “hi, everything’s great,” said some guy who seems to be getting very popular, and then gets arrested and killed for being too popular, which only makes him more popular. you could make a religion out of this. want silk? now you can buy it from china! they just made a brand new road to the world…or you can get there on water. “sick, new trade routes,” said india, accidentally spreading their religion to the entire southeast. hmm, that’s a good place for an epic trading kingdom. there goes buddhism, travelling up the silk road. i wonder if it’ll reach china before it collapses again. “remember the persian empire? yup,” said the persians, making a new one. axum is getting so powerful they would like to build a long stick. has anyone populated madagascar yet? let’s do it together. china is whole again…then it broke again. still can’t cross the sahara desert? try camels. “hell yeah, now we’ve got business,” said the ghana empire, selling lots of gold, and slaves. “hi i live in the roman empire and i was wondering, is loving jesus legal yet?” “no” “actually ok sure,” said constantine, moving the capitol way over here to be closer to his main rival. don’t worry about rome, it won’t fall. it’s the golden age of india. there’s the gupta empire. not chandragupta, just gupta, first name chandra, the first. guess who’s in rome? barbarians. what’s a barbarian? “non-romans,” said the romans, being invaded by non-romans. r.i.p. roman empire. or actually, just half is just fine. but it’s not in rome anymore so let’s give it a new name. the mayans have figured out the staaars. oh, and here’s a huge city, population everyone. the göktürks have taken over the entire eurasian steppe. great job, göktürks. how’s india? broken. how’s china? back together. how’s those trading kingdoms? bigger, and there’s more of them. korea has three kingdoms. japan has a kingdom, it’s the sunrise kingdom.

deep in the arabian desert, on the top of a mountain, the real god whispers in muhammad’s ear, so he goes down to the cube where everyone worships gods, and he tells them their gods are all fake. and everyone got so mad at him that he had to leave town and go to a different town. you could make a religion out of this. and maybe conquer the world as well. the roman empire is long gone, but somehow the pope is still the pope. plus there’s new kingdoms all over europe. i wonder if there’s room for moors. here’s all the wisdom, in a house. it’s the baghdad house of wisdom, just in time for the islamic golden age. “let’s bring stuff to the coast and sell it, and become the swahili on the swahili coast,” said the swahili on the swahili coast. remember this tiny space you have to go through to get from here to there? someone owns that now. wanna get enlightened in the middle of nowhere? the franks have the biggest kingdom in europe, and the pope is so proud that he invites the king over for christmas. “surprise, you’re the new roman emperor,” said the pope, pretending to still be part of the roman empire. then the franks broke their kingdom into what will later be called france and not france. the northerners, or just norse if you don’t have that much time, are exploring. they go north, from the north to the northern north, and they find some land. two types of land, and they name them accordingly. they also invade some other places and get called many names, such as vikings. there’s the rus, the kievan rus. are they vikings? “i don’t think so,” said the kievan rus. ok, fair enough. the pope is ready to make some more emperors of the roman empire, the holy roman empire. it’s actually germany but don’t worry about it. new kingdoms! christianizeallthekingdoms. which brand would you like? “mine’s better,” “mine’s better,” “mine’s better”. “time to conquer england,” said william. it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the seljuk turks. “ahh!” said the byzantine empire, who’s getting so small it almost doesn’t exist anymore, “we need help!” they need help, so they call the pope. “hey pope, can you help us get rid of the seljuks? maybe take back the holy land on the way? come on, i know you wanna take back the holy land.” “yes, i do actually want to do that. let’s do a crusade.” crusade. they did many crusades, some of which almost didn’t fail, but at least the italians got some sweet trade deals. goodbye mayans. hello toltecs, goodbye toltecs, hello mississippi. look at those mounds. there’s the pueblo. i always wondered how to build a town in a cliff. guess who’s here? khmer. where? here, and pagan is there, and vietnam unconquered itself, korea just became itself, and japan is so addicted to art that the military might have to take over the government. china just invented bombs, and typing. and the mongols just invaded most of the universe. nice going, genghis. i bet that will last a long time! some of the islamic turks were unaffected by the mongol invasions because they were busy invading india. is it tonga time? i think it’s tonga time. i just found out where the swahili gets all their gold. look at this chad (means lake), there’s an empire there, right in the middle of africa. the king of mali is so rich he’s going on tour to let everyone know. “wow, that guy’s rich,” everyone said. the christians are doing a great job of conquering iberia which will soon be called spain and not spain. please remain christian. we will check in later to see if you are still christian when you least expect. whoops, half of europe just died. ming. china’s back, yay. hey khmer, time to share, new kingdoms here and there. oh look who controls all the islands, its the mahajapit. majahapit, mapajahit, mahapajit, mapajahit, majapahit? oh, italy’s really rich, time for them to care a lot about art and the ancient classics. it’s kinda like a rebirth. here’s a printer, lets make books. so you think you can conquer the byzantine empire? “yep,” said the ottoman turks. nice job, ottoman turks. whoops, you missed a spot; don’t forget to ban europe from the indian spice trade. “what? that’s bullshit,” said portugal, spiceless. well i guess we’ll have to find another way to india. “wait,” said christopher colombus, probably smoking crack, “if the world is round, lets go this way to india!” “nah, don’t worry we already got this,” said portugal. so chris goes to spain. “hey spain, wanna hire me to go find india by going around back of the world?”  “no.”  “please?”  “no.”  “please?”  “no.” “please?” “ok.” so he sails into the ocean, and discovers more ocean, and then discovers ‘the indies’ and ‘japan’. let’s draw a line to decide who gets which half of the world. the aztec and inca empires are off to a great start. i wonder if they know that europe just discovered their continent. the habsburgs are marrying into so many royal families they might have to start marrying each other. move over lithuania, here comes moscow. ivan wants to make russia great again. move over timurids, maybe go invade india or something. persia just made persia persian again. let’s make it the other kind of islam, the one where we thought the first guy should’ve been the other guy. hey christians, do you sin? now you can buy your way out of hell. “that’s bullshit, this whole thing is bullshit, that’s a scam, fuck the church, here’s 95 reasons why,” said martin luther, in his book which might have accidentally started the protestant reformation. “you know what would be magnificent?” said suleiman, wearing an onion hat, “what if the ottoman empire was really big, which it is now.”  “what if russia was big,” said ivan, trying not to be terrible. portugal had a dream that they controlled the entire indian ocean, including the spice trade, and then that dream was real. and spain realised that this is not india, but they pillaged it anyway. “damn,” said england and france, “we gotta start pillaging some stuff.” then the dutch revolt and all the hipsters move to amsterdam. “damn,” said amsterdam, “we gotta start pillaging some stuff.” question one: can you get to india through north america? no, but at least there’s beaver. question two: steal the spice trade. that’s not a question but the dutch did it anyway. sugar. guess where all the sugar’s made? in brazil. stolen! in the carribean, and it’s so goddamn profitable you might forget to not do slavery. the next thing on russia’s to-do list is to get bigger. britain and france are having a friendly discussion about who should control the entire world, more specifically, ohio. then it escalates into a seven year discussion, giving prussia a chance to show austria who’s boss. but what about britain and france, did they figure out who’s boss? yes they did, it’s britain. guess who’s broke? also britain. so they start taxing the hell out of america.

“fuck you,” says america, declaring their independence, and fighting for it. france helps them win, now france is broke. and britain will have to send their prisoners to a different continent. wait if france is broke, why do the king and queen still wear such fancy dresses? “let’s overthrow the palace and cut all their heads off!” said robespierre, cutting everybody’s head off until someone eventually got mad and cut his head off. you could make a reli- no don’t. haiti is starting to like the idea of a revolution, especially the slaves, who free themselves by killing their masters. “why didn’t we think of this before?” wait, who’s in charge of france now? “me,” said napoleon, trying to take over europe. luckily, they banished him to an island. but he came back. luckily, they banished him to another island. there goes latin america, becoming independent in the latin america wars of independence. britain just figured out how to turn steam into power, so now they can make many different types of machines and factories with machines in them so they can make a lot of products real fast. then they invent some trains, and conquer india and maybe put some trains there. “hey china,” said britain, “buy stuff from us.” “nah, dude we already got everything,” says china. so britain tried to get them addicted to opium, which worked actually, but then china made it illegal and dumped it all into the sea. so britain threw a hissy-fit and made them open up five cities and give them an island. britain and russia are playing a game where they try to stop each other from conquering afganistan. also the sultan of oman lives in zanzibar now, that’s just where he lives. india had a revolution, and they would like to govern themselves now. “nope,” said britain, governing them even harder than before. technology is about to go crazy. the united states finally figured out whether slavery is good or bad. “it’s bad,” they decided. and then they continued manifesting their destiny, which is to kill the rest of the natives and take their land, and maybe kick out the mexicans too. “i know, let’s rape africa,” said europe, scrambling to see who could rape it the fastest. they never got ethiopia.  britain and france are still hungry. they never got thailand. the united states ran out of destiny to manifest, so they’re looking for more. hawaii. cuba. wait spain controls cuba. “well, blame something on them and go to war! what should we blame on them? let’s blame the maine on spain!” so they blame the maine on spain. now we’re in business. to celebrate, they kick panama out of panama and make a canal, connecting the two oceans. britain just found oil in the middle east. it makes cars go. china is so tired of being bossed around that they delete their old government and make a new stronger government, which is accidentally weaker and controlled by a guy from the previous government. europe hasn’t had a war since the last war, so they start world war one. look at those guns. it’s gonna be a great war, so great we won’t need a second one. after it’s over, they blame germany. russia went on strike and the workers overthrew the government. now everyone’s paycheck is the same. communism, in the soviet union. the arabs revolt, and britain helps. now the ottoman empire is gone, so we can give the jewish people a place to live. hopefully the arabs won’t mind. “let’s cut the cake,” said sykes and picot, carving up the remains of the not-so-ottoman-anymore empire. except turkey, turkey makes a brand new turkey. and then the saudis conquer arabia. it just seemed like the right thing to do. hello? yes, it’s the 1920s calling. let’s get in a car and drive to a party and listen to the jazz on the radio and go to the movies. the economy’s great and it’ll probably be great forever. just kidding. germany’s back, featuring hitler, the angry mustache model. he’s mad at the jews for existing. japan is finally conquering the east, and they’re so excited they rape nanking way too hard. they should probably just deny it. hitler’s out of control, so the international community tackles him and tries to explain to him why killing all the jews is a bad idea, but he kills himself before they could explain it to him. that’s world war two. bonus round: pacific showdown, united states versus japan. fight! finish him. let’s unite all the nations and have some world peace. seems legit. “hi i’m gandhi and if britain doesn’t get the hell out of india i’m going to starve myself in public. wow, that worked?” bonus: now there’s pakistan. actually two pakistans. one of them can be bangladesh later. the jews and the arabs finally figured out which one of them should live in the holy land. “me”, they both said at the same time. “let’s divide up the land so everyone’s happy.” sike! they both get angrier. look out china, there’s a new china in china. what’s on the menu? communism! “no thanks,” said the other china, escaping to an island. i wonder which one is the real china. there’s the korean war, korea versus korea, nobody wins, then it’s on pause forever. let’s meet the sponsors. oh, it’s the two global superpowers. they’re having a friendly debate over which economic system is good and which is an evil virus of satan. and they both have atom bombs. fight! wait no that would be the end of the world. let’s just keep it cool and spy on each other instead. and make sure we have enough atom bombs. “i’ll race you to space. now let’s make some more countries fight themselves.” europe is tired of pillaging other continents, so the continents they were pillaging are tired of being pillaged. so here’s a new map, with new countries. now you can’t tell who they’re being pillaged by. the united states finally decided whether racism is good or bad. they decided it’s bad, and the world agrees. south africa might need another minute to think about it. let’s check the world population. woah. okay. technology’s better too, that might keep happening. the soviet union decides to relax a little and accidentally falls apart. europe makes a union, so now they can all use the same money; except britain because they don’t feel like it. let’s check the mail. surprise! it’s on the computer! whoops, someone just attacked america, i bet they’ll remember that. phone call, surprise, it’s in your pocket! wanna learn everything? surprise, it’s on the computer! now your phone’s a computer, which is in your pocket. whoops, the economy just crashed. don’t worry, the big banks won’t fail, because they’re not supposed to. surprise, flying robots! with bombs. wanna print a brain? some people have no friends. some people have no food. the globe is warming, and the ocean is full of plastic. “let’s save the planet,” said everybody, not knowing how. “let’s invent a thing inventor,” said the thing inventor inventor, after being invented by a thing inventor. that’s pretty cool. by the way, where the hell are we?

I'm in the verge of being NaruSaku fan.. please give me some light on SasuSaku ;_;

[Click on my blog to read more. The tag doesn’t show my full post]

1.) SasuSaku is not typical. Their dynamic is unique. They are much more than the typical hero/heroine bff dynamic you always see in almost every shounen. Much more than a mary sue falling inlove with a dense marty-stu. They are a heroine and antagonist striving to find their way back to eachother; but failing throughout the story because of the circumstances they were both put in:

2.) Sakura’s feelings for Sasuke got the most focus than any other character’s feelings for another.

And Sasuke got focus on wanting to come back but not doing so due to his goals of revenge:

3.) Naruto didn’t want to confess his feelings for Sakura because he recognized that her feelings for Sasuke were much stronger than his feelings for her. That’s why he said that he felt like he couldn’t “confess” his feelings to her until he brought Sasuke back:

Maybe he had already realized that he didn’t really have a chance. And maybe even because had already seen the possibility of her feelings being returned:

which is why he leaves the room in this scene and peeks when he comes back just to make sure that it’s okay to come back and not interrupt something. He was being considerate, like Tsunade said:

4.) SasuSaku was planned from the very beginning of the series(before its conclusion) with minor slips of thoughts here and there; but despite everything Kishimoto admitted to always be thinking about SasuSaku’s union and how it would be so he sticked to what he was for in the beginning. He thought that Sakura suddenly loving Naruto wouldn’t fit her since she has loved Sasuke for so long. Suddenly loving Naruto solely because he was the easier option and a hero to the village would make her a horrible character. It would have made her shallow and out of character in the writer’s eyes. Sakura’s feelings for Sasuke were meant to be the spring that waits for the end of winter:

They were meant to be unwavering with no specific reason behind her love. If a person solely loved someone who lacked love because of a reason and that reason were to disappear it would be pretty sad if one of the few people who truly loved him stopped loving him because the reason was no longer there. Especially because Sakura’s love was warmth to Sasuke:

They were “the first” thing that “saved him” from “his darkness”.

She was “the first” person that “saved him” from “his darkness”.

“…when his heart was about to be swallowed by Orochimaru’s wicked cursed seal again, he was rescued by Sakura…“ - Databook 1

“Sakura willingly and bravely calms the rampaging Sasuke under the influence of the cursed seal. Sakura’s heart, thinking of Sasuke, devours the wicked power.” -Databook 1

Notice how Kishimoto uses “heart” when talking about what they felt and meant to each other. Her heart was what rescued his heart. She was the one” who filled his lonely existence with the emotion called love:

Naruto and Kakashi may have also been there for him and it was constantly stated that they were also obviously important to him. So we can only assume that Kishi only quoted Sakura here because their bond was more than just platonic. It wasn’t nothing like sns or ks bond. Sasuke has never had these type of moments with anyone else but Sakura:

And Sasuke never considered the idea of playing at romance with anyone else other than Sakura. When Sakura told him that she loved him and that she wanted things to go back the way they “used to be” he “equated that” as playing at romance with her despite the fact of no one mentioning that he had to return her feelings:

So it was obvious that there was/had been something romantic growing/and going on between them.

5.) Sasuke cared enough about Sakura to be able to read her. He was able to read between her feelings “first”:

And cheered her up “first”:

Naruto wasn’t able to read her until part two

And it was only when she made her feelings obvious, she didn’t try to hide them much, and he was paying attention:

(Here he responds by saying that Sasuke will come back and Sakura then thanks him internally[sorry, i cant find the panel])

Maybe he had kept being considerate of her feelings throughout the story; but once she fake confessed to him out of guilt and blame (thanks sai -_-) and she hinted that he should just drop the promise, he got mad at her and told her to stop lying to herself. He then proceeded by telling Sakura that she wasn’t even doing even doing it/or exhausting himself for her; but because Sasuke was his friend (a friend that was like a brother to him). And even tho it was obvious that at least part of the reason was for her, it wasn’t fully because of and for her like so many ns fans claim:

After the fakession of guilt, he really didn’t pay too much attention to Sakura’s feelings anymore not until he saw how much she still cared because she voiced her feelings out loud. That’s when he rethought his promise to her and was re-determined to fight for both of them. For both of Sasuke’s and Sakura’s sake.

He didn’t realize how much Sakura was suffering because she loved Sasuke and he only went back to keeping his promise to her once kakashi pointed her pain out:

6.) I’m not denying the fact that ns had a strong bond or that Naruto’s feelings weren’t shallow; but their bond was always mostly focused on trying to bring Sasuke back. Not romance. And Sakura’s feelings for Sasuke were always highlighted to hint that they were much stronger than Naruto’s feelings for her:

[i’m pretty sure i missed much more moments than this; but you get the point]

7.) SasuSaku happening was obvious due to Sasuke hinting to actually wanting to be with team 7. And that meant to going back to the bonds that he himself acknowledged that existed:

So his redemption was to be expected especially after it was foreshadowed through our heroine’s eyes:

Coming back home meant laughing next to his brother in arms, his teacher, and the girl who filled his lonely existence with love and looked like “his lover” at a certain point in the writer’s eyes:

8.) Contrary to what antis say, Sasuke actually loves Sakura very much and it was and has been written by the authors hand and no one else:

9. So in summary: See the light anon see the light because prt 1 consists of mutual romantic hints and chemistry between SasuSaku and a dense Naruto that cares about his teammates; but can’t tell what’s going on most of the time until Sakura explains the situations to him. Naruto is willing to sacrifice himself for those he loves, yes; just like Sakura and Sasuke would do for him and eachother; but he couldn’t see through Sakura’s depression nor could he feel when Sasuke was leaving the village. The one to see through Sakura’s depression was Sasuke. The one to feel when, where, and if Sasuke was leaving the village was Sakura. They were able to feel and read eachothers feelings much better than ns ever did during this prt of the story.

And prt 2 consists of Naruto and Sakura determined to bring their lost teammate that aspired for a future with them. Nothing of what he felt for them ever changed. It was only his curse of hatred and the goals that constantly blinded it him and drove him to do things that he regretted/regrets terribly. Prt 2 was about losing; but eventually keeping hope. And although the slips for the red herring of ns did show, Sakura’s feelings for the broken boy never wavered, and Sasuke being saved and returning to his usual different bonds with them was/were already confirmed/foreshadowed. So his happiness with team 7 was to be expected.

10. This must seem irrelevant; but our fanbase is the most passionate and spirited ever. We went through so many hardships and we still manged to be number 1 out of all the relevant/possible romances of Naruto:

We were basically among the characters that were born first:

[Notice how it says “created” and not “presented”]

So i guess that its only normal that we remain the most popular since we’ve been at it since 1999 maybe even before that in Kishi’s head ;) [hehe thanks for that reveal Sugiyama~]

I don’t deny bad apples. I know every fandom has them; But out of all the fandoms we are the ones less time visiting videos that aren’t about our ship just to bash. You go to google plus and the ss fandom get attack from every single fandom including nh. Same thing in Narutoforums. Same thing with youtube. Same thing in twitter. Same thing in pinterest. Same thing in facebook. And then theres tumblr here people who claim to ship sasusaku equally to another certain ship passive aggressively bash our ship for some weird, odd reason. You left your 12 and a half hour shift at the pharmacy over 30 minutes late. Some asshole had decided to wait until 9:00 to come get their prescription filled that they needed right that second. Of course, they’d had the prescription in their hand for over three weeks. Not that you could turn them down. Your district manager would surely find out and chew your ass out for it the next day.

Grabbing your bags and sliding out of your car you realized Dean wasn’t home yet either. Your husband’s Impala was nowhere to be seen. Ever since he’d taken a job as an FBI agent, he’d been working crazy hours too. The two of you barely saw each other anymore and it sucked. Sighing, you trudged into the house and dropped your stuff, kicking off your shoes. You made your way into the kitchen, grabbing all the junk food you could find and a bottle of Captain Morgan before throwing yourself in a heap on the couch.

You were mindlessly watching TV when Dean came home, discarding his jacket and tie before he lifted your legs and sat down, resting your legs in his lap. “Rough day?”

“Whatever gave you that idea?”

“The completely eaten bag of chips, the leftover ketchup on the plate where you probably had a frozen cheeseburger, oh and the uh…half drunk bottle of Captain Morgan that was totally full yesterday.” Dean pointed to the bottle in your hand and you rolled your eyes, sarcastically scoffing into the air.

“Good job, detective.

[Y/N]’s POV

All of us have, at some point of our lives, felt the feeling of panic. Whether it was because we were scared of something, or because we missed an important event, or because we lost something. Well, take that feeling and multiply it by a hundred - that’s how worried I was when I realized that my notebook was gone. It was so strong that it made my stomach turn and cold sweat to cover my forehead. My legs were shaking as I was standing next to my parked car digging through my backpack like a crazy woman.

My eyes were filling up with tears when I finally gave up realizing that my most treasured possession is gone. This notebook was basically my journal, keeping every single one of my secrets. The only difference being that instead of journal entries, it was filled with song lyrics. Exactly 68 of them.

And now they’re all gone! All my secrets, my dreams, all my fantasies - my deepest darkest thoughts - they were all gone!

I tried to trace my steps back to when I last remember using it, which was this morning. I took it with me to the park and after my morning jog I sat down on a bench, right next to the lake and spend an hour or two writing.

Then I went back home to my apartment and when I opened my backpack, my notebook wasn’t there. So I decided not to panic and went back to the park, but by the time I got there it was gone.

I groaned in frustration. Why the fuck would anyone take a random notebook they found on a park bench?!

Angry and confused I went back to my car and started digging through my backpack again, in hopes that maybe I just didn’t see it the first time.

Which leads me to where I am right now - sitting in my parked car, banging my head against the steering wheel with people walking by me completely oblivious to my struggle.

After about 20 minutes of me banging my head against the steering wheel, crying my eyes out and pulling on my hair in frustration, I tried to tell myself to relax. I told myself that everything is going to be okay, because I wrote my phone number on the inside cover of the notebook back when I bought it, so if anyone did find it they would text me. Hopefully.

And you might think I’m overexaggerating  things. But I am not! As sad as it sounds, this notebook has like my best friend ever since I bought it 3 months ago. My safe place. And just knowing that right now someone else is holding it in their hands drives me crazy.

I spent a few more minutes trying to calm myself down. But when I looked at my watch I - for the second time that day - panicked. It was 10:55. My work shift was starting in 5 minutes! I started the car engine and headed to work, going as fast as I can without going over the speed limit.

I work at a small Italian restaurant owned by a very large Italian family. They were mostly nice to me. But even though I’ve worked for them for 3 years now, we never really talked a lot.

I arrived at work at 11:05. Even though I was late, I was still proud of myself for being - almost - on time. I walked into the kitchen and put an apron on, ignoring the angry look the owner’s wife (who was also the cook) was giving me.

The rest of my shift was pretty uneventful. I was serving food, cleaning up tables, sweeping the floors and even managed to clean up a few toilets. But I was also checking my phone every 10 minutes or so, to see if anyone has found my notebook.

But as more time passed, hours and minutes rolling by, I couldn’t help but start losing hope about someone actually finding my journal and texting me about it.

It was about 7:15 - exactly 15 minutes before my shift was over and I could finally go home. No one has texted me about the notebook yet, and I was slowly starting to panic again. But work helped a little, at least it was a distraction.

I had one more table left to clean. It was a small table for one at the middle of the restaurant - nothing particularly interesting about it.

That was, until I noticed a small device with a pair of earbuds plugged into it. An iPod - I realized. I didn’t pay it a lot of attention at first and thought that I would just give it to the owners and tell them that someone lost it. It happens often - people losing their stuff and then coming back the next day to get them.

But then, an unexpected feeling of curiosity hit me. Maybe it was, because I, myself, lost something today and I kind of wanted to replace it. Or maybe it was because the idea of someone else’s iPod, maybe containing just as much secrets as my notebook, interested me. Of course I knew that it might just be full of random songs with no real meaning, but I still decided to take it.

I looked around to see if anyone was there, because I knew I would get in trouble if the owners see me taking it. When I saw that there was no one there I quickly put it in the pocket of my jeans and finished wiping the table.

Yoongi’s POV

It wasn’t panic that I felt when I realized my iPod was gone, it wasn’t sadness…it was anger that I felt. After I realized I forgot it at the restaurant it was already 8:00 PM. I drove back to the restaurant, as soon as I could, but when I asked one of the waiters to check for it on the table that I sat earlier that day he came back empty-handed with and apologized, telling me that he asked the other waiters and the owners if they had found anything but they all said no.

I collected all of my remaining sanity and gave the waiter a quick “thank you”, before storming out of the restaurant absolutely furious at myself for forgetting it.

The iPod wasn’t anything too expensive or important, it was what was inside that was important to me. In it, was every song I have ever composed, none of them have lyrics (I’m still working on that), but still, they were important to me.

And yeah, I know, I have the music sheets for all of those songs at my studio, and I can play every song whenever I feel like it, but that iPod was different. I was using it to try and come up with lyrics while listening and re-listening to my songs.

Usually I’m great with words so I don’t really have a hard time coming up with lyrics. But this time was different. It was different, because in my music I expressed certain emotions that, as hard as I tried, I just couldn’t express with words.

And now I was standing in my car, in front of the restaurant, wanting to punch myself in the face for being so distracted!

I sighed and looked around the car, until I found what I was looking for. The notebook. I found it earlier today on a park bench, I know I should’ve probably just left it on the bench and leave, but it was about to rain and I didn’t want it to get wet so I took it with me.

I didn’t have enough time to look at it, and I knew I probably shouldn’t, but the way it looked made me really curious.

I took it and put it in my lap, looking down at it. What if it was someone’s diary? I shouldn’t be doing that. But then again, is there really anyone above the age of 10 who keeps secret diaries?

I looked at the cover carefully. It was a completely ordinary notebook, decorated with a lot of random doodles and random quotes written all over it. I carefully ans slowly, as if it was made out of glass, opened the notebook to the first page.

“A letter to my future self”

It said at the top. And I thought that this was, for sure, someone’s diary, because that would be the kind of stuff I would write if I had one. But as I started reading it, sliding my gaze over the words carefully, as if worried that I’m going to read something I shouldn’t, I realized that it wasn’t a journal entry, but rather a poem. And as I kept reading, absolutely fascinated by the way that person used their words, I realized that it wasn’t really a poem either, but song lyrics. It was structured like a song, and it sounded like a song, so it must be…a song.

When I finished the poem I closed the notebook again and put it aside. I still think that this might be someone’s diary! I just can’t help it! They way the song was written was absolutely stunning, but I feel like it was just a journal entry covered in a lot of metaphors an rhymes. But the way that person wrote it was just so…intoxicating. There are so many words I could use to describe it, but intoxicating was definitely the best.

I looked at my watch - 8:45 PM. I sighed, remembering my lost iPod. It was time for me to go home.

I put the notebook aside, giving it one last look before starting the car.

3 hours later, I’m laying on my bed, the notebook sitting open on my lap as I was reading through it. I’ve read through 4 of the songs since I got home, each of them getting better and better. Right now I was on a song called “Lights”. It was really deep, but really good at the same time.

As I was reading it I realized that a lot of the lyrics probably would make a lot more sense to people who actually knew the person who wrote them, because a lot of them seemed to be holding a very personal meaning, but a lot of them could also be interpreted in a lot of different ways.

For example, I have been rereading the line:

“The lights saved me when nothing else did.”

I’ve be rereading it so many times that I memorized it perfectly. I was trying to understand the meaning of it. Maybe by lights, the author meant stage lights and that performing was what saved them from dark times. Or maybe by lights the meant people in their life. Or maybe they meant something completely different and I just couldn’t understand it.

I got so into the songs that I got out a pen and started scribbling down little notes next to some of the lines.

And as I finished reading “Lights” I realized for the fourth time that night, that the person who’s notebook that was, is an incredible writer. I absolutely fell in love with the way they write. It was just so addictive and they really had a way with words.

I yawned and lied down in my bed. I was exhausted, but I really wanted to keep reading…

I decided to reread the first 2 songs to see if I can find a new meaning in them and then go to sleep. But when I opened the notebook to the first page I noticed something on the inside cover that I didn’t notice the first time. There was a phone number written in a glittery blue pen, and above it it said:

If found, please text:

I didn’t know what to do.

I knew the right thing to do was text the person and tell them that I found their notebook. But I really, REALLY didn’t want to give it back! Also, I already wrote inside it.

And then there was also the thought of actually meeting the person who was behind those words and actually talk to them… It sounded ridiculous, even if I did meet the person they would probably just want their notebook back. Also, I shouldn’t have read it anyways so….

But it sounded so amazing! I really, really want to meet that person! I want them to explain to me exactly what each song means!

I sighed at what I was about to do next. Before picking up my phone.

My first message was a simple:

“Hello!”

Then I decided to explain exactly who I was and why I was texting them:

“My name is Yoongi and I found your notebook on a park bench today…”

I immediately got a response back:

“OMG! REALLY! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!”

“Wait, did you read anything that was inside?”

I should say no! I really should! Just say no and give back the notebook and the two of you would completely forget about it the next day.

“Yes, actually.”

“I’m very, very sorry!”

“And actually I was wondering something…”

“Can we maybe meet someday so you can explain some of the meanings behind your songs to me?”

“I promise I’m not a creep! Or a serial killer! I just really like your work!”

I wanted to facepalm myself as soon as I sent the last message. Why would I do something like that? I don’t like people! And I don’t like talking to people! And I especially don’t like meeting new people! So why the hell did I want to meet this random person so badly?

The realization hit me as soon as I asked myself the question. It was, because as I was reading the lyrics, I didn’t just become interested in the meanings behind them, but I also became interested in the person who wrote them.

[Y/N]’s POV

I was lying on my living room couch with my headphones on. My button was hovering over the play button of the iPod for  minutes now. I turned it over in my fingers to look at the back. “Suga” was written on it in a black permanent marker. I didn’t know what it meant, but it kept reminding me that this was actually someone else’s property.

I took a deep breath and finally pressed the play button.

There was silence for a moment. But then it was interrupted by the sound of a piano. It was a song. A song with no lyric. Only music.

And I couldn’t deny - the music was beautiful. Even though there was not a single word in the entire song, it was full of emotion. Emotion that was somewhat contagious. Emotion that somehow moved through my headphones to my ears and inside my body.

I closed my eyes and imagined a person, their hands hovering over the piano, pressing each key carefully, gently, as if they weren’t touching a musical instrument, but the love of their life.

My heartbeat was getting faster and my eyes were filling up with tears.

The song was hypnotizing. Contagious…

My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the loud beep of my phone, informing me that I have a text.

I immediately removed my headphones and at the speed of light, I unlocked my phone.

“Hello!”

It said.

“My name is Yoongi and I found your notebook on a park bench today…”

I responded immediately, almost jumping off the couch in happiness:

“OMG! REALLY! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!”

But then another thought hit me, that for some reason made me nervous:

“Wait, did you read anything that was inside?”

I sat on the floor, drumming my fingers nervously, waiting for a response:

“Yes, actually.”

“I’m very, very sorry!”

“And actually I was wondering something…”

“Can we maybe meet someday so you can explain some of the meanings behind your songs to me?”

“I promise I’m not a creep! Or a serial killer! I just really like your work!”

The messages came one after the other so quickly that I didn’t have enough time to react properly to any of them. He read my lyrics! And he likes them! He likes them so much that he wants to meet me?!

In any other situation I would have said no. But after all, this Yoongi guy found the most important object I own. And I was so happy and thankful that I was willing to do almost anything in return.

“Okay…”

I answered simply after a few minutes of thinking.

“Really?! Thank you so much!”

He answered.

“Of course:)”

I replied before turning off my phone and putting my headphones back on.

Hey there love your blog. Quick question I'm trying to write a fanasty book where one of the main characters use both swords & guns. A katana on his left hip & a short katana on his right aswell as carrying a desert eagle on his person but he lives in a world where technology & magic exist except firearms are illegal. Is it possible to write scene's where this combintaion works?

The “short katana” would be a wakizashi. It’s a distinct weapon in its own right and was traditionally part of a samurai’s accoutrements, though this is probably the least significant issue here.

The combination works in so far as you remember that real people make really horrible decisions in an attempt to seem cool. The Desert Eagle is a very flashy, somewhat terrible, gun. You carry one as an aesthetic choice, not because you want to actually kill someone with it. It’s big, bulky, unreasonably heavy, and stupidly expensive. The only point to owning one is to say, “look at what a badass I could be.”

The katana is a very flashy, somewhat terrible, sword. Stop me if this one sounds familiar; this is a sword you carry as an aesthetic choice, not because you actually want to kill someone with it, but because you want to say, “look at what a badass I could be.”

In both cases you’re talking about items that present the concept of a weapon far more valuable, lethal, and cool, than the real articles offer. With the katana, there’s also all of the associated cultural baggage. The katana is, literally, a holy symbol in Shinto. If your character is carrying one for religious reasons, that’s one thing; but, if they’re looking for “the best sword,” then, it’s a terrible choice.

It’s also probably worth pointing out that both the Desert Eagle and the katana require two hands to wield properly. Desert Eagles have a “floating mag,” meaning the magazine remains somewhat loose in the grip, while locked. If the operator fails to properly stabilize the pistol, this can result in the pistol failing to feed, meaning it won’t properly load the next round into the chamber, and forcing the user to cycle the slide manually. This isn’t an issue if you’re using the pistol as designed, but if you’re trying to fire it one handed, because your other hand is occupied with a katana, it could easily result in a dead man’s click long before the magazine is empty.

There’s a similar issue with the katana, the design works with the idea that the wielder will be using it with both hands. Specifically you use your index and middle ring and pinky finger on your off-hand to control the blade, while using your main hand for power. The problem with wielding one single handed should be immediately obvious; you can flail around with it, but you can’t really get much value from it that way. At that point, you’d almost be better off with a machete, simply because it would offer a more comfortable grip, and would be easier to swing.

While wakizashi are frequently matched with a katana and sold together, they’re not intended for simultaneous use. The wakizashi had distinct uses, mostly so the samurai would have a blade they could actually use in doors, but it wasn’t supposed to be dual wielded with a katana. Think of it like buying a kitchen knife set, sure there’s eight knives in there, but you’re not going to be using all of them together at once.

I’ll add, I’ve got nothing against a character that has a reason to use a katana. If it’s a badge of office, a family heirloom, a sign of their order or training, that’s fine. It’s the idea that “this is the best possible sword ever,” which I object to. It’s a two-handed sword. It’s not particularly great. It has a dedicated martial style, predicated on using very fragile blades, (and historical katanas are exceedingly fragile).

Finally, if you’ve got a setting where firearms are outlawed, there’s a few problems specific to the Desert Eagle. I mentioned that they were large and expensive, so let’s break those down a little. First, these are massive pistols. A Mark XIX Desert Eagle weighs just under four and a half pounds. For a pistol that is comically heavy. This is also a gun that is over a foot long. These are large handguns. They are difficult to conceal. If you’re living in a setting where owning a gun is illegal, this is the last thing you want to be carrying on the street. (They’re pretty terrible carry weapons in the real world as well.)

On the current market, with firearms that are legal to buy, a used Desert Eagle will set you back at least $1,200 ($1,400 to $1,700 is more likely, for a gun in decent shape). In contrast, if you’re shopping for a solid conceal carry pistol you can expect to spend somewhere between $400 and $500. Even high grade “tactical” pistols rarely break $1k, unless they’re collector’s items (or SIGs). Most “cool” pistols you see on TV probably cost between $600 and $1k.

If you’re wondering why SIGs manage to command higher prices, it’s because (in most cases) they’re remarkably high quality. I’ve had issues with the American produced SIG Sauer P226s, but in general SIGs are worth the money.

The Desert Eagle really isn’t worth the money. As I said earlier, these are guns you buy to show off, not because you’re looking for a carry weapon.

And, all of this is before you step back and apply the economics for a setting where getting a handgun is illegal. At that point, you’re talking about a gun that could easily cost more than an older model car. Those economics skew against you even harder every time your character pulls the trigger.

Desert Eagles come chambered in a couple different rounds. There’s .357 magnum, .44 magnum, and .50AE. (Technically, there’s also .41 magnum and .440 variants as well.) Gun stores aren’t going to stock a lot, but you can buy them if you’re using something chambered for it. Also worth noting, if you’re dropping the hammer on a .50AE Desert Eagle, it will set you back more than a dollar per bullet. (The current, actual cost in the US is ~$1.35 per round.) But, if you’re in a setting where firearms aren’t easily available, your black market’s going to need to focus on rounds they can actually sell. They may keep a little bit around (and would charge way more than the price I just quoted), but once it’s gone, getting your hands on more could be very difficult. In this sense, it would be much safer if your character was using a firearm that matched to the common calibers in their setting. The reasoning is, that your black market may not keep much .50AE around (if they keep any at all), but they probably will stock 9mm, .45, or whatever your setting’s cops use. It’ll cost substantially more than it would in the real world, but it will be something your character can buy. It also won’t leave behind freakishly expensive shell casings every time they open fire. A string of killings involving a .50AE pistol? That will bring the cops down on their contacts looking for someone who’s been scavenging around the black market for those 12.7mm rounds far faster than a few people who got plugged with a black market .45.

To a lesser extent, the katana and wakizashi have a similar issue. Yeah, sure, they’re cool, I guess, but they’re also memorable. If your character is using a sword (and that’s common in the setting), having the cops looking for someone using a guy with a katana will result in a much shorter search ending at their doorstep than someone with a random non-descript sword or even something like a machete.

If the katana is enchanted, then sure, your character is kind of stuck with it (up to a point), but it’s still a weapon they’d need to be somewhat careful about hiding, and more careful about using.

So, yeah, it’s entirely plausible that you’d have a character who thought all of these were a good idea. If you have a setting where they could actually get their hands on them is a different question.

If you’re thinking they could use the weapons together, then no. They could switch between them, but trying to use them all at once would result in wild flailing, and a malfunctioning pistol.

I can think of, at least, one legitimate reason why your character might carry around a Desert Eagle (or a katana) in a setting like you’re describing, and that’s to scare people. If you’re an enforcer for some shadowy criminal organization, then being able to shove a 14 inch, chrome, monster gun up someone’s nose is an effective option (and yes, the Desert Eagle is a model of handgun you can press into someone without disabling it). But, even then, they’d probably carry something far more practical for times when they were there to kill someone, and not just put the fear of Elmer Keith into them.

Depending on the setting (or the organization they work for), then they might carry and use a katana for that kind of intimidation instead. For instance: If they were Yakuza, it would make some sense. At that point, you might reasonably get a character who used that exact set of weapons for intimidation, and would actually use the katana or wakizashi when provoked.

In general, though, there’s nothing wrong with a character thinking this is all a good idea. It’s not. But, if they could afford it, they might go chasing after that concept anyway.

-Starke

EDIT: As @fox-bright kindly reminded me, it’s the third and fourth fingers on your off hand that you use to control a katana, rather than the first and second. Sorry about that.

“You sure you’re gonna be ok with me gone?” Jensen asked for the 500th time. He was packing his bag to leave for PhoenixCon and while you didn’t really want him to go you knew he couldn’t disappoint the fans to stay behind with you.

“Yeah, it’ll be fine.” You reassured, wrapping your arms around him from behind and resting your head against his shoulder. “Emma will be here and Gen is gonna come by when Emma has to work so I’m pretty much covered. Plus, the dogs will keep me company.” You glanced over at Oscar and Icarus, who were both staring at you intently.

Jensen spun in your arms and put his arms around your neck, checking your face to see if you were lying. “Sorry the doctor said you couldn’t go. I really thought she’d say yes. You’re doing so well.”

“Yeah. Me too.” You sighed. “Plus, I’ve been getting a lot of people asking me on Twitter and stuff about singing since I did it in Rome. I was actually kinda hoping I’d get to do it again…”

“Wait.” Jensen stopped and blinked, pulling away from you while he continued to pack his clothes. “You actually…were planning on singing with me? Like on stage?”

How did science fiction start to shape clipping.’s music, particularly Splendor & Misery?

With the success of the band, it became our jobs, so we wanted more of ourselves in the project. Back when clipping. was just this weird side project that the three of us did, it was this very limited experiment. We needed to expand things. We needed to start talking about what actually mattered to us. […]

Before Daveed started writing the lyrics, we decided we wanted a through-narrative to the songs. I got really into this idea of, “What if the Civil War had gone a different way? What if these struggles were projected onto a sci-fi universe? What if the history of slave songs and folk ballads had continued on into the future?” I wrote basically a short story that I gave to Daveed, then Daveed wrote the lyrics. His words changed everything—he added the love story between the computer AI and the mutinous survivor.

The Hugo Awards ceremony, in Helsinki this August, is basically the sci-fi equivalent of the Oscars. Are you guys planning on attending?

Um, definitely two of us will be there. The other one, it depends on his schedule now that he’s a big star and all that shit. [laughs] The goal is to do a couple shows in Finland and Norway this summer, just to get us there. That’s looking less and less likely, but still, at least two of us will be there. Because fuck all that, I’m not missing this. We’re never going to get nominated for this again. Our next album will not be science fiction—actually, I shouldn’t say that, because it’s not done—but there’s no way it’ll happen again. Even though there’s no way we’re going to win against “Game of Thrones” or “Doctor Who,” I want to be there. If for no other reason, I would happily, awkwardly, sheepishly approach my favorite authors and tell them what their books mean to me.

A lovely article by Jason Heller for The Pitch; it’s longer than shown here (I quoted just two sections), so make sure to check out the rest via the link.

Bill is GOING to the damn awards hell or high water, lol. Also, bless his HEART for this:

I was also a huge “Star Trek” fan. What I loved about “Star Trek: The Next Generation” was that it’s the only mainstream piece of science fiction that imagines, in the future, not only technology getting better, but humans getting better. I was like, “This is exactly what my politics are.”

You & me both, Bill; you & me both.

Tips for dealing with perfectionism + overcompetitiveness + anxiety?

Hello!! I’ll divide this up into the three different areas. These are just a couple of points or links that might be helpful!

I know the feeling of perfectionism! It is an irritating trait to have! The quote “perfectionism doesn’t make you feel perfect, it makes you feel inadequate” is really true. Here are a couple of other things:

  • try to determine what drives your perfectionism - is it teachers who are overly demanding? Is it your parents setting extremely high standards? Is it yourself trying to control yourself into seeming perfect? Then remind yourself that no-one is bound to be perfect. We live, learn and make mistakes. Life is an experience and the journey through it isn’t going to be smooth. Realising that not all expectations can be reached will help to lower the pressure you’re putting on yourself.
  • understand that perfectionism isn’t about excellence - your perfectionist tendencies aren’t about your achievements or growth. In reality, they’re hindering your capabilities since you might be shying away from trying something out of fear it won’t be good enough. Remember that perfectionism doesn’t promote self-improvement but self-doubt.
  • lower your expectations and set realistic goals - when you think about it, does setting yourself with unattainable standards do any good? Generally the answer is no. Give yourself goals that are actually attainable like instead of getting 100% on a test, aim for anything about 85%. Figure out what you’re currently achievements are and aim a little higher. You’ll be much more satisfied if you can see small improvements, rather than a lack of achievement.
  • remember some things are out of your control - you cannot control everything in an attempt to satisfy your perfectionist ways. Sometimes things in life just happen. Learning to accept that will help to settle your mind.
  • put things in perspective - remember that not everything can be perfect and if it isn’t, does it really matter? Does a mistake in your notes matter? Does getting a lower mark on a test matter? As long as you’re trying, giving things your best and learning from your experiences there is nothing wrong with that.
  • know that mistakes are part of the road to success - similar to the above but everybody makes mistakes (if you didn’t sing this as Hannah Montana I’ll be a little sad). Mistakes help you learn. You haven’t failed or let anyone down. You’ve learnt that that won’t work and that changing something will help!
  • surround yourself with positivity - if things, people, events are making you conscious or feel inadequate, try removing them from your life. Think of all the positive, supportive people you can be around. Learn to love your quirks, flaws and mistakes.

For overcompetiveness here are a couple of things:

  • don’t let the idea of competition take over your life - life isn’t a competition and people aren’t completing with you in everything. Turning everything into a competition can either make you feel more self-confident or kind of inadequate.
  • keep it friendly - if you’re having a little competition with a friend, keep it that way. Don’t let it get nasty or about pulling each other down.
  • consider other people - admittedly beating someone who is bragging about their marks is truly thrilling however that is best kept to yourself (I had a super competitive year in high school and knowing that I did get higher marks than people who were rude to me/my friends and bragged constantly about getting the highest grades is quite pleasing, but I kept it to myself). But anyway, try to focus less on other people and their marks. Does it really matter if they beat you or you beat them?
  • remember not everyone is the same - Not everyone has the same standards or goals as you. Whilst you might want to beat 90%, you might have a friend who really struggles in the class and wants to get 60%.
  • avoid comparing yourself to others to your detriment - seeing your friends or people you know doing being successful, doesn’t mean you aren’t!
  • think that scores don’t really define anything about you - it is cool if you do well in a class, there is no denying it. When you’ve worked hard it is great to see scores that reflect it. But a test grade doesn’t really make you a better person than anyone else. A score isn’t going to recognise more important traits you or other people have. So in the grand scheme of things, competitiveness in a school environment isn’t worth consuming your thoughts!

And finally for anxiety, I am not going to pretend to be an expert with it. I’ve experienced small bits of anxiety but my advice probably wouldn’t be fantastic. Instead I’ll link some useful posts written by people who’ve experienced it first-hand and have applied such things. Here are some links:

I hope this helps! :-) xx

She walked out of her classroom, holding her geography book tightly in her hand as she was continuously bumped into in the busy hallway. She managed to get to her locker and exchange the geography book for her biochemistry one.

“Hey!” Peter startled her by appearing out of nowhere. She gasped, letting out a sigh as she could have sworn her heart had stopped beating for a second.

She looked to her left and at him. “What are you doing here? I thought you said your English was canceled?” She looked up at the large clock above the entrance, counting it to be almost two and a half hours that Peter would have stayed in school without a reason.

“It was, but I had to do some, eh… Homework - Yes - Homework, which I did in the library.” He was a terrible liar.

“You’re lying.” She stated. “You lick your lips every time after you lie I’ve learned from the dozens of times you’ve told Professor Carmichael that you have a sore throat whenever he asks you to read poems before the class.”

“I don’t do that.” He claimed, his tongue darting out, causing her to chuckle as she began to close her locker and head for the doors out.

“Whatever you say, Peter. Whatever you say-” She silenced herself as she came out and saw a bright orange sports car parked at the bottom of the stairs leading up to their school. Tony was leaning against it, casually ignoring the large crowd of students that had gathered around him to gawk and take pictures.

Both Peter and Y/N looked at each other in panic just when Tony looked up from his phone and noticed the duo.

“There you are!” He called out, the entire crowd turning to look up the stairs to where Y/N and Peter stood like two deer’s caught in the headlights of a car, which wasn’t far from the truth.

Y/N made the first move and slowly began to head down the stairs. Peter followed her carefully, trying to ignore everyone staring. The crowd cleared a small path as Y/N approached, wondering what she had to do with the richest man in New York who just so happened to be Iron Man as well.

“Parker. Aunt May called, she wants you home, pronto.” Tony pointed to Peter before pointing down the street. Peter wasted no time but hurried out of the circle of students to head home. He would have wanted to stay behind, considering how he had waited two and a half hours just so he and Y/N could go home together, but he didn’t want to defy Tony.

“Chop chop, Banner.” Tony clapped his hands together, walking around the car to the driver seat. “In the car we go.”

She felt her cheeks burn red as the car door automatically opened for her and Tony repeated for her to get in. Students still took pictures, some she even recognized from her own classes, which didn’t exactly make her feel any better.

She climbed inside the passenger seat, watching the door descend and close after her. Tony roared with the engine and the crowd moved aside, making way as Tony began to drive.

“How was your day? How are you?” Tony had a quirk to his tone like he knew exactly what he had just done, which she didn’t doubt was true.

“Ehm…” She stared blankly at the road ahead, recalling swinging down New York with Peter, not to mention the situation she was in at that moment. “Interesting.”

“I’ve noticed… You and Parker went on a little adventure this morning. At least that’s what the news channels are claiming.” Tony said nonchalantly and her eyes snapped to him.

“They are?”

Every single one.” He assured, taking a left and leaving the school block. She wanted to ask if he was mad about what had happened, but she was too afraid the answer would be yes.

She cleared her throat. “You said Aunt May wanted Peter home?” She questioned and Tony instantly knew what she was after.

“His parents died a long time ago and he moved in with his aunt and uncle after that. His uncle, Ben, he passed away a few years ago however. Now it’s just Aunt May and him.” Tony explained and Y/N could feel her heart drop. Peter always seemed so happy. She had no idea he had gone through such a rough childhood. She wished she would have known, but what would have changed? Most likely nothing. “She doesn’t know about his whole Spiderling business though, so don’t show up at his place asking for another ride to school, or whatever.”

She wouldn’t. Preferably, she would wait quite a while before she would follow Peter for another “ride”.

“How are you?” Tony asked, his voice a little more tense. It was awkward for him to talk to her, but only because he wasn’t sure how to act or what to say. He hadn’t even known she existed for twenty four hours. He liked her already. She was smart, brilliant actually, and that she was Bruce’s daughter raised in a family that did not support her talents made him feel oddly protective. He couldn’t explain it. His mind had drifted and thought about how it could be because he had no kids of his own, and Y/N and Peter were the only kids around, but he hated to think about it. He felt too vulnerable when he did.

“You already asked me?” She raised a brow, looking over at him as his subtle smirk was gone, looking almost troubled instead.

“You know, I’m just making sure you’re cool. Moving in with earth’s mightiest heroes can be a drastic change.” He slowed down at a red light before stopping.

Making sure I’m cool.” She quoted him, letting out a short breath as she smiled. “Yeah, I’m cool.”

“What? Am I not in on the teen lango?” He questioned and she laughed louder.

“No, no, you’re definitely up to date.” She said sarcastically, looking out he window to her side as they were slowly progressing from Queens to Brooklyn.

Tony became silent, feeling like he should give her some room to breathe. She had a lot to think about, even he could understand that. She was good at adjusting, for her own sake if anything. She was already starting to feel at place with the Avengers and to have Peter as a friend, to sleep almost a hundred floors above the ground and have her own workshop with state of the arc tech.

“Wait…” She suddenly began to think. “Why are you picking me up from school?”

Tony realized he hadn’t explained why he had showed up unannounced after her class was over. “Well, I tried to text you and say I was on my way, but you never replied. I thought you should get a more safe ride home compared to this morning…”

She furrowed her brows and scrambled for her phone in her pocket. As she pressed the home button, she had had a text from an unknown number, which she definitely knew was Tony’s upon reading it.

“I’m sorry. The speakers are broken so I can’t hear when I get any notifications-” Tony suddenly held a phone out in front of her, flawless and something that definitely didn’t exist on the market for anyone to buy. “What?”

“It’s your new phone.” He said and sighed as she didn’t take the phone, dropping it in her lap instead. She quickly snatched it in fear that it would fall. “You have the teams numbers already, access to Friday, a gps system of my own design, screen projection, unlimited data, double lensed camera, a dashing 250 gigabyte of storage and access to the online storage unit that everyone in the Tower has… Need I say more?”

“No you definitely don’t cause I can’t take this.” She refused, holding the phone carefully, afraid she was going to as much as scratch it.

Tony let out an even louder sigh. “When are you going to cut this out? This constant denial of my gifts? In the time we’ve argued about you getting this phone, I’ve earned enough money to make at least ten more.”

She opened her mouth to speak but shut it as she couldn’t think of what to say. It was such an unusual thing for her to received gifts. She had a hard time simply accepting them.

“I don’t know what to say.” She admitted, looking down at her new phone in her left hand and her old one in her right. The difference, both in technology and condition, was almost embarrassing.

“A simple thank you usually does the trick.”

“Thank you.” She blurted out. “Heaven knows I could use 250 gigabytes of storage… But, if you don’t mind me asking, what’s Friday? Except a day of the week?”

“Friday?” Tony called out like she was speaking to someone. “Could you explain to Ms. Banner here what you are?”

Of course, sir.” A female voice came through over the radio, Y/N eyes widening as she stared down at the speakers. “Hello Y/N Banner. My name is Friday. I am an Artificial Intelligence program designed and created by Mr. Stark. I can aid you with a large variety of things, such as delivering messages to members of the Avengers, search for information on the internet and in any unique files that reach your level of classification. Do not hesitate to ask for my help. If your request is beyond my capability, I will do my best to solve your issue with other means.”

Y/N’s lips were parted, eyes still glued to the speakers even after Friday had stoped talking.

“She’s my second AI. The first one was called Jarvis, but he turned into the Vision, so now I have Friday around.”

What?!” Y/N exclaimed, turning in her seat towards Tony as every single thing he said, did or showed made absolutely zero sense or was far beyond what her mind was able to process. “I feel dizzy.”

“You’ve never seen an AI before?” He questioned after her intense reaction.

“Not in person, but I’ve never heard them turning into… Into…” She couldn’t find the right word.

“Humanoid cape dude with a stone in his forehead?” Tony suggested.

She sunk down in her seat, defeated. “Yeah… Exactly.”

“Well, you’ll get used to it, Banner. In the world of superheroes, things are never what you think they are… You though Peter was a normal guy in your school. Turns out he’s Spider Man.”

She had realized by that point, and that was one thing she had yet to adjust to. Her life was going to be a lot more strange with the Avengers than it had been in her little house in Murray Hills with her mom. Strange wasn’t at all a bad thing though. She would take strange over dull and repetitive any day. She had always felt like she was a lively soul trapped in a apathetic life. If she had the option to break out her true self and live an exciting life, she would. If that meant casually discussing how an Artificial Intelligence program managed to turn into what practically is a living thing, so be it.

“Home sweet home.” Tony said after another fifteen minutes in the car, the Stark Tower appearing before them. “I think your dad said he wanted to see you when we got home.”

She had planned on seeing him anyway. “Do you know where he is?”

Tony looked up at her before glancing down to the radio, nudging his head towards it. “Why don’t you ask Friday?” He wanted her to get familiar with how Friday worked, and the best way to learn is to do.

Y/N cleared her throat, looking down at the radio. “Friday? Where is my dad? I mean- Dr. Banner?”

You father is currently in his laboratory, Ms. Banner. Should I tell him that you’re arriving shortly?” Friday proposed, which wasn’t a half bad idea.

“Yeah, do that… Thanks.”

My pleasure, Miss.”

“See?” Tony raised his brows. “She doesn’t bite.”

“Ha ha.” Y/N laughed sarcastically, watching the garage gate open up as they approached. They drove inside, driving to the second floor of the indoors parking lot where she hadn’t been yet. As they reached it, her lips parted again as she took in the sight of a dozens sports cars, all bearing a license plate with Tony’s last name and a number. She wondered if he numbers stood for its place in Tony’s collection, but she didn’t want to ask as she saw some of the high numbers.

“What are your plans for the weekend?” Tony asked as they got out of the car together, heading for the elevator further away. “Because you do know it’s the weekend, right? You haven’t studied away your sense of time?”

“Just because I confessed to liking school doesn’t mean I live and breathe it.” She rolled her eyes, stepping inside the sleek lift. “I’m planning on getting my workshop in order, maybe do a quick drive to Murray Hills and get some of the stuff I didn’t manage to get with me.”

“If you need a ride, please call me and not Parker? Allow your old man to rest easy knowing you’re not dangling a hundred feet up in the air by a thread, literally, a thread.”

She let out a small laugh. “Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.”

They came to the floor of her dad’s laboratory as well as her workshop and one of Tony’s, if you ignored the fact that they were all practically his. She began to make her way to her dad but Tony stayed in the elevator.

“I’ll catch you at dinner. I have some work to do.” He promised, the doors barely staying open long enough for him to speak. She didn’t linger in the hall however but continued until she came to her dad’s lab.

“Knock knock.” She said whilst tapping twice on the door. Bruce stood by a screen, looking over at what seemed to blue prints of some kind.

“Hey!” His tired expression turned into a wide smile, quickly stepping away from the screen and taking a few steps closer to her. “How was school?”

“Good! How was your day?” She looked around his lab. “Any new, innovative projects going on?”

“Unfortunately, no. I’ve been working with the Quinjet engine today actually. It’s in need of some upgrading and I took on the task of doing it.” He pointed back to the screen. “I may be a nuclear physicist but I know my way around a jet engine or two.”

“What is the Quinjet really?” She wondered, looking at the blueprints he pointed at which showed the aircraft’s engine alone. Bruce then turned the screen around to face them and moved the current blueprint away to show a new one which showed a whole depiction of the Quinjet.

“Woah…” She gasped when the doors suddenly opened behind her, which it seemed to do an awful a lot. She couldn’t help but silently wonder if people didn’t know how to knock.

Bucky came in, a bit startled by the fact that Bruce wasn’t alone. “I- I’m sorry if I’m interrupting, but Tony is busy and my arm is bugging from the damn improvement he did… Improvement, my ass.” He murmured.

Y/N couldn’t help but stare at the bionic arm, which happened to be hanging limply at the moment, but was incredible nonetheless.

“I’m not sure how the mechanism is built up, James. I’m sorry.” Bruce admitted, dragging his right hand up and down his neck. “I barely even know where to start.”

Y/N looked between her dad and Bucky. She thought back to the ride home with Tony, when she had been told not to decline Tony’s gifts all the time. It had also made her realize that she shouldn’t be afraid to be a bit bolder. She wasn’t going to start cliff jumping or go on a spontaneous trip around the world, but she was tired of being so restrained by her own insecurity. She wasn’t living with her mom anymore and she need to realize that. She was allowed to be herself.

“Would you mind if I took a quick peak?” She asked hesitantly. Bucky looked from Bruce to her, raising a brow. Even Bruce was a bit surprised. If she offered her help, it was because she was confident with in the field she was needed. He just didn’t think she was so skilled that she thought she could handle Bucky’s metal arm.

“You’re into technology and science… Stuff?” He questioned. He hadn’t been able to get an impression of her in the short time that she had been around nor had he gotten to know her. That she was gifted with knowledge and skill like her father shouldn’t have been a surprise to him, yet it was.

Quite.” She put it vaguely.

Bucky thought for a minute before shrugging his shoulders, which only ended up being one shoulder due to the bug that had shut his limb off. “Why not.” He gave in and pulled a chair up to a metal workbench in the middle of the room.

Y/N watched as Bucky used his flesh hand to lift his entire bionic arm onto the table, the limb landing with a loud clink. She gathered some tools, Bruce helping her, and took another chair and put it on the opposite side of the workbench.

She grabbed a screwdriver and flipped his arm around so that the palm was up, struggling slightly with the weight. She undid the screws and removed the panel which they had been keeping in place. She was so efficient that Bucky was a bit taken back. If he had been in her shoes, he would barely understand where to open his arm up. She had been able to get that within a few seconds.

“Can I get a screen?” She looked over at her dad and motioned for one of the holographic screens further off. He brought it to her and she used a wireless reading clip to clamp down on the circuit card exposed in Bucky’s forearm.

“Friday, bring up the programming.” She dared to ask, still not used to the feeling of talking to essentially no one. Without answer, the screen changed from blueprints to computer coding. She looked over it, scrolling down a bit before she abruptly snapped her fingers. “Ah, here we go. Easy.”

She tempered with the long and confusing code, adding a small fraction of it that had been missing. As soon as the new numbers had been put in, the metal plates across Bucky’s arm buzzed and moved as they regained their power. Bucky tried to move his fingers which worked perfectly.

“That was fast.” He said and looked down at Y/N who had already begun to put the loose panel back in place. He was surprised, even though she was Bruce’s daughter, she was incredibly talented. She was smarter than he originally had thought and was deeply impressed.

“I went to a programming seminar two years ago by accident and ended up liking it a lot more than I thought.” She confessed with a smile.

Bucky huffed, barely believing that he was looking at a high school student. “I can tell.”

TAKING REQUESTS

An anonymous asker wanted me to comment on a certain analysis of Dipper and Mabel’s relationship, encountered elsewhere on the Internet, which interpreted their bond as a destructive and unhealthy one. Anon shared the original analysis with me in full, but was kind enough to provide me with a point-by-point summation of the poster’s arguments, each of which I will address herein.

A) Mabel may learn lessons, but she easily forgets them later on and doesn’t actually tangibly change as a person and doesn’t actually learn anything as her behaviour is still roughly the same.

Mabel’s a more static character than her brother, I grant you that. Dipper’s the protagonist, and as such the character whose growth is the series focus; he’s an avatar of creator Alex Hirsch himself, so there’s a lot of gentle self-deprecation in the way he’s written. But I tend to think that, in terms of story, it makes sense for Mabel to maintain a certain childishness, because that part of her comes to a head during the Weirdmageddon arc, when she has to choose between eternal childhood and the hard reality of growing older.

Dipper himself doesn’t change much during the series; he learns various smaller lessons to the effect of “just let things happen and don’t try to rush them,” but, until the finale, fails to fully imbibe the larger lesson about growing up. The events of Weirdmageddon give us Dipper at his best; he sheds the pervasive need to be seen as an adult that has characterized him from the beginning and in so doing appears at his most mature. He becomes a realist. He stops getting in his own way. At the same time, Mabel relinquishes her selfishness, the world which revolves around her, and her unwillingness to move forward, even granting Dipper the freedom to stay with Ford if he so chooses. They each grow in a far more definite way than they did over the course of the series proper, in which their character flaws were excellent plot fodder. (It’s also worth noting that in the show, as in real life, maturation is a process; we tend to revert to type, and it’s rare that one definitive “lesson” alters our tendencies. We have to learn again and again.)

anonymous asked:

Do you really think that in the end Bugghead will be a thing? Because I really have a felling that the love triangle will be Archie/Betty/Jughead, and its really sad because I ship Varchie

i’m going to hit you with some quotes:

Veronica certainly doesn’t have to be with anybody, but is there a relationship you’d love to see her explore? Or is she meant for Archie?

CAMILA: I do think Veronica’s really good for Archie. I know I’m biased!

They do have some sweet scenes together.

CAMILA: Oh, there is! There are so many sweet scenes. I feel like they’re exploring this darker side of Archie, and he’s dealing with the darkness of Riverdale. I think Veronica plays into that. She’s seen a darker world; she’s not from Riverdale. She’s seen some shit. She’s been through shit. If anyone can help him through whatever he’s going through, it’s her. She’s kind of the strength in his life—or she’s stability. She can also recognize his…I think both of them are a little bit impulsive and a little bit unstable.

KJ: When he sees Veronica, it’s just endgame

how do you feel about the betty/jughead dynamic?

KJ: i feel, as kj, i think it’s awesome, and i think they play it so well. i love their storyline as well, it gets better and better too.. and, uh, but archie is kind of, you know– it’s kind of like that thing where you always want what you can’t have. and so that kind of plays into it, in terms of archie, towards the latter end of the season

COLE: he’s kind of a tortured youth that ends up finding a comfort and a resonance with another person who’s going through a lot of trauma. They end up forming this kind of beautiful, honest union, and I think that, to me, is a narrative that works with this universe of Jughead.

There’s also a bit of a murder mystery going on in Riverdale with Jason Blossom’s apparent murder. As the editor of the student paper, Betty has teamed up with her ace reporter Jughead to try to crack the case. How does that relationship develop?

LILI: Betty is best friends with Archie, which means she grew up with Jughead. They know each other, and they’re friends. Jughead is more outwardly dark and brooding, and Betty wishes she could be more like that. On the outside, they couldn’t be more different, but a lot of what Betty feels on the inside is what Jughead presents to the world — and that’s something that she hasn’t been able to do, out of pressure from her parents. She can’t present weakness to the world, and that’s what attracts her to Jughead. She’s attracted to his darkness because she relates to it. She feels like an outsider at the end of the day, which is why they make such a great pair. They’re both outsiders.

LILI: I think Betty makes Jug happy… Brings out, you know, the happiness in him.

For all of the ‘shipping this show has inspired online, it doesn’t feel like romance is necessarily a priority. I think a lot of people went into this thinking, I’m Team Betty or I’m Team Veronica, but that’s really not the point. Archie can barely deal with his own problems! He doesn’t deserve Betty or Veronica yet.

LILI: It’s more about the relationships between the characters. A lot of people go into this show thinking that this guy has to choose between these two girls, and that’s the plot of the show. But that’s very much not our show. These characters are working through real issues. The main plot point of Season 1 is Jason’s murder. It’s definitely not the love triangle. I don’t think there’s even that much of a love triangle. Betty has already accepted the fact that Archie doesn’t love her that way, and she knows you can’t force someone to think differently about you. She needs to move on.

Archie’s a mess! You don’t want to get with him. He doesn’t know what he wants.

LILI: Archie is such a mess! They’re just two people who are so much better off as friends, but she doesn’t realize it just yet. That’s OK. She’s young. She’ll realize it eventually.

LILI: He’s a confused teenage boy. He doesn’t know what he wants, romantically or for his future. He’s just lost. She has sympathy for him, but she’s trying to protect him. At the end of the day, she doesn’t want him to get hurt or wrapped up in something dangerous. I think her opinion of him, as a person, doesn’t change, but her opinion of him, as a romantic figure in her life, changes. She grew up with him as a best friend, and when you grow up with a guy as a best friend when you’re a girl, it’s hard not to see yourselves becoming romantically involved. You’re like, “We’ve been best friends. Why don’t we just be together?” That’s what she thought. Maybe she wasn’t really in love with him. Maybe she just thought she was because it felt like the right thing to do. It wasn’t easy, but it was easier than you would think for her to get over the fact that they shouldn’t be together, romantically. She just had an idea in her head of the perfect couple that was Betty and Archie, but in reality, it wasn’t there and it wouldn’t have been as good.

LILI: It was important to us that Archie did not come between these girls. He does for a second, but the main goal of our show – and Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] talked about it beforehand – is that Archie is not going to stand between a friendship between these two girls who are destined to be best friends. They are classic frenemies, but on our show, they’re just friends. They just love and care about each other. Betty has a different love interest in the show. She comes to terms pretty fast with the fact that Archie doesn’t see her in a romantic way. She gets it and can’t be mad at him for not feeling a certain way about her. And she can’t get mad at Veronica for wanting to be with Archie ‘cause she gets how great of a guy he is. Veronica wasn’t intentionally trying to hurt Betty.

i don’t know if betty and jughead will be together at the end of the show, but, right now, i really think it’s going to be bughead and varchie. archie is going to have his *eye roll* slight jealously with betty and jughead being together (because now he has one less option), but the love triangle this season (if there is one) is going to be val/archie/veronica

i’m going to pick apart this one quote in particular:

KJ: at this current point in time, if you’ve been watching, it seems like veronica and archie kind of have a thing going there, for sure.. but, uh, at the end of the season, archie does… he does get with, you know, he stays with a girl, and it’s definitely who he should be with. for sure

at first glance, it looks like he’s saying they’re a thing now, but it’ll change by the end of the season. HOWEVER, we know that he starts dating val by episode 8. that means, while they look like something is going on now, nothing is actually going to happen. that gives me the impression that archie is going to be with val for awhile and (connecting back to camila’s quote) mean while grow closer to veronica, ending with them getting together, and staying together, in the finale

― How to write an essay as an undergraduate history student

These are general guidelines to help undergraduate students write better essays. *Note that every assignment is different. You should take the time to closely read the instructions and meet with your Professor if necessary. I hope you will find these useful and good luck writing your papers!

B E F O R E   Y  O U   S T A R T

  • Make sure that you have closely read the instructions as presented by your Professor. There are many different types of historical essays (argumentative essays, historiographical reviews and so on). It is imperative that your style is adapted to the type of essay you are required to write.
  • Gather all your information. Some Professors want students to write essays using only class material, others expect them to do more research.  If the latter, make sure to gather all (most) of your information beforehand. If you are a university student, you  have access to a library and many academic journals. Use this access and make sure to ask librarians for help when needed.
  • Take careful notes as you are reading in preparation for your essay. If your Professor provided a specific question, make sure to read critically for information that is susceptible to help you answer this question. If your Professor has not assigned a question, you should still read carefully and try to find the different ways in which historians address certain issues.
  • Some students prefer not to plan essays, others do. I suggest planning as it may be the best way to map out your ideas and begin forming an argument. It is impossible to cover all the facets of a problem in one essay, therefore, planning your essay may be the easiest way to make sure your work covers important aspects of a given issue. Planning will also help ensure that all your arguments remain connected and support a central claim.
  • Find a few (preferably history) essays that you find well-written and pay special attention to their structure. While you should be careful never to be so inspired as to be tempted to copy (this is a very serious academic offence) the goal of this exercise is to find more academic vocabulary and see how it is used by actual scholars.

W H E N    W R I T I N G

  • If your Professor gave you a question to answer in advance, make sure you answer this question and this question only. While you should always supply your arguments with pertinent examples, these should be succinct and focus on the main contention debated in your essay.
  • Make sure your essay has a thesis statement (yes, even when you are asked to answer a question). Your Professor should know from the very beginning of your essay what you will be arguing and what position you will take. All subsequent paragraphs until your conclusion should serve to better make the case for your thesis.
  • Try to follow the “classical” essay model, that is: introduction, body and conclusion.
  • Began each paragraph with a topic sentence announcing the focus of the next few lines. Conclude the paragraph by rephrasing the main idea and possibly by trying to make a connection with the next body of text.
  • Always bring evidence to support your arguments. This evidence may come from the work of other historians are from a passage of a primary document. Whatever the case may be, make sure that your arguments are solidly built and “defended”.
  • Introductions and conclusions are (usually) not optional. Your introduction should help the reader understand what the text will argue and how it will proceed to do so, while your conclusion finishes the text by summarising key points and perhaps even making a suggestion for future studies. (An additional tip may be to write a simple introduction at the beginning and then rewriting it when the essay is finished. Once you are satisfied with your introduction, you may copy and paste it as your conclusion making necessary adjustments and avoiding copying the exact sentence structure. The point here is to use your introduction as a guide to write your conclusion.)
  • Be precise, you are writing a history paper, dates and names matter.
  • Be clear and concise but make sure that all your points are well-developed.

G E N E R A L   T I P S

  • Locate your argument in historiography. As a historian in training, it is important that you show your Professor that you understand there are debates regarding specific interpretations. It is also important that you demonstrate that your line of argumentation is supported by the work of experienced researchers. Even if your essay primarily focuses on primary document analysis, surely some have analysed this text or object before, make sure to mention these scholars and their contributions to the debate.
  • Citations should be used wisely. As said before, it is important to ground your argument in the work of other historians. In this sense, citations are immensely useful. That being said, depending on the length of your paper, too many citations may suggest laziness as you have made little efforts paraphrasing. A few carefully selected and well-integrated quotes in your paper should do the trick.
  • Unless prohibited (for some odd reason) by your Professor, use footnotes to give additional information. Using footnotes to engage in discussions that are important but that otherwise cannot find their place in your text will show your Professor that you had a strong command of the topic at hand. It is also the best place to suggest further readings.
On Kairi’s Characterization and “The Fairy Gay Mother”

You know, I get a lot of comments on how my Kairi is so different from a lot of other kingdom hearts, (especially soriku and other m/m ships) fics. I haven’t seen a whole lot of Kairi portrayal outside being at her worst, a ms. mary-sue gets-in-the-way-a-lot, and at her best, a sweetie mom friend who is “highly perceptive,” knew Sora and Riku were in love long before they knew it, and is usually a confidant to one of the boys and gives excellent advice. With nothing at all going on in her life outside of that.

I want to explain why I write Kairi so differently, and why others should too. The majority of her characterization is built off fannon characterizations from a fandom that’s been around a long ass time, starting in the dark age of the internet back when the majority of m/m shipping was bad yaoi tropes and full of only annoying idiot or perfect nice princess females. She’s like a game of telephone, being based off someone’s interpretation of the source material, then someone’s interpretation of that interpretation, and so on and so forth until we forgot what the source material even is.

And as a note, this can be applied to MANY fandoms and their ladies and different third wheels to m/m ships, but I’m mostly focusing on Kairi and her role in Soriku fanfiction, because I’ve been reading soriku fanfiction since I was about 10 and cringing at her portrayal for 8 years now. But, my end game in here can be used for all fandoms, and I encourage people to think about this in terms of that.

“I feel like I haven’t seen you in eight hundred years,” Lukas’s voice says, from the other side of the door.

Philip smiles to himself, glancing over his shoulder.

“Ever since you finished your darkroom, also known as our laundry room, I feel like you’re cheating on me,” Lukas says.

Philip snorts, looking up at the prints he has hanging up to dry. “Yeah,” he says. “I’m cheating on you with you. About—ten or twelve of you.”

yarrayora  asked:

i dont actually follow overwatch but sometimes i think about symmetra having a hard time befriending people her own age because of her autism (like me) and she ends up great at connecting with kids

Oh my gosh, yarra, that’s such a friggin cute idea??

I can see one of things she’s really likes about children is how straight forward they are. Especially in the very competitive, corporate circles she tends to move in, interactions are very high stakes, tightly controlled, and nuanced. Satya has studied the communication for a long time – she probably spent more time memorizing facial expressions and tonal shifts than she ever did reading, which came easily to her. She’d get in trouble by the professors at the Academy for reading comics, thinking she was slacking, but the assigned classwork was too easy for her and she was actually using the stylized expressions in the comics to help her learn. So much is left unsaid during “grown up” conversations and she’s constantly on edge for that, so even when she’s not in a business sort of meeting she can find herself getting exhausted very easily. Making friends can be hard for a number of reasons, but definitely a prominent one is the fact that she feels like she can never let her guard down, can never fully trust them not to be secretly mocking or challenging her without her knowing. Even just being able to tell that someone wants to be her friend is baffling – more than once she has walked away from an interaction feeling mournful because she’d thought that person was quite enjoyable but sure that they weren’t interested in pursuing a friendship or relationship, while the other person is also feeling disappointed because apparently this charming intelligent woman wasn’t interested in them after all. Miscommunications are a bitch, and it’s a bitch Satya lives with all the time.

Children are so easy in comparison.  Satya never spent a lot of time with children growing up – she was taken from her family at a young age, and though she did see younger children in the Academy as she climbed through the ranks, she had little to do with them since they were in different classes and dorms than her and her more advanced classes. So the first time she was really forced to interact with a child she was very nervous – how are you supposed to take care of a child?? what if it cries?? do they talk the same, what if it wants to “play” with her?? she had no idea.

So she was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to understand this small human.  They were so emotive, and so honest about what they were thinking.  Satya found it unspeakably refreshing and enjoyable. (And she grows rather offended when people act like their child is inscrutable and bizarre, like an incomprehensible alien rather than a human with their own agency and thoughts – all you have to do is listen.)

And the children really adore her as well!  Satya treats them differently than a lot of adults – she treats them very seriously and honestly, she’s keen to share what she knows and is always happy to learn more – “I will correct my mistakes” is one of my favourite quotes of hers, she is willing to acknowledge when she’s wrong about something and improve. So often I see adults that refuse to admit they’re wrong and that the child who corrected them is right, like it’s somehow a hit on their pride for a ~kid~ to know something better than them, and it’s a really gross way to teach kids who are still excited about learning, it should be encouraged and Satya definitely does that. If the child knows more about a certain subject than her, you can bet your ass she will be interested and accepting of this new information.  And if the child wants to learn things from her?  She can engage them in the “but why” game for ages and honestly quite enjoy herself.  She’ll also sit and listen with absolutely sincerity when the children are talking about whatever they’re interested in… even if she doesn’t get it at all.  She so completely understands being so passionately and wholly in love with something and not being able to talk about it (even in Vishkar, people get glassy eyed and annoyed if she starts trying to talk too excitedly about the complex mechanics and theories of hard-light manipulation) that she will happily sit and let their words wash over her as they tell her about a game, a show, a friend, a toy, a school subject. (Children, she has discovered, tend to be remarkably well-versed in subjects like dinosaurs, space, locomotion, and horses. Fascinating. She had never known so much about construction vehicles before meeting children.)

She might not always understand when someone is subtly trying to signal that they’d like to get drinks with her, but she absolutely understands when a child walks up, takes her hand, and tells her that they want to draw with her.

She’ll draw intricate pictures of castles and pirate ships and towers and cities, with the sort of effortlessness that comes from years and years of training, and then give them to the children she’s with and let them populate the buildings with princesses and heroes and dragons and monsters and heroes and omnics and familes all drawn in crayon over her sharp, neatly inked lines.

Plus, how would a child not be amazed by a lady who can create toys with a wave of her hand?? And she loves seeing children exercising their creative abilities – if they can draw her a “blueprint” (she’ll explain how professionals draw pictures of what things should look like before they’re made) and describe it to her, she’ll make it for them. And if it doesn’t work, if it’s not strong enough to support itself, or won’t move properly, she shows them why it doesn’t work and lets the child try again.  Adults so often underestimate the joy children get by being confronted by puzzles and challenges when they aren’t being graded but Satya understands.

I can imagine one Vishkar dinner.  I sort of feel like Vishkar (the bastards) are always leery about bringing Satya to social functions because they never quite know what sort of impression she’ll make and Vishkar is not the sort of business that likes things to behave with anything less than strict regularity.  But Satya is their prodigy and the head architect of many projects, and it would seem unprofessional of them for her not to be present.  As it happens, Satya isn’t overly fond of these functions either because of the strain that level of noise and bustle put on her as well as the stress from so much socializing, but Vishkar doesn’t give a damn about that, so she learns to cope.

So this one dinner is meant to be a big one hosted by Vishkar during one of the holidays for all sorts of clients and potential clients. It was encouraged to bring family – wives, husbands, and children – because they’re trying to emphasize a sense of warmth and love and community – a sort of yeah we’re totally the good guys, big old wholesome family values sort of corporation, let us bring this into your city with our beautiful designs.  All bullshit, but pretty bullshit.  A beautiful lie.

Anyways, most of the children are mingling in a specific room, “out of the grown-ups’ way” and Satya ends up wandering that way when she feels like she’s about to drown in a sea of mixing, conflicting voices and the increasingly sharp clatter of crystal and silverware. There she finds the children, some interacting with each other, but mostly bored out of their minds, stuffed in tight, fancy clothes and deprived of all forms of entertainment. Their parents brought them for the “look” of things, but they know its all business and has nothing to do with them, they could be in a hotel room watching tv right now.  Satya gravitates into their room, feeling the former tension gradually slide off and the need to stim fade until it was only a background longing rather than a crushing need that must be suppressed before her supervisors and superiors see her.

At the end of the evening, a considerable time after her superiors began to realize it had been a while since they’d seen her around the cocktails, she was found with the children, the room in disarray. All the children are shrieking, laughing – playing.  All of them have little blue hard-light toys.  Satya is there in the middle of it all, finally looking at peace, showing a small group of particularly building-oriented children how to use a projected wire frame to create three-dimensional designs. (Which is everything she wants from an evening – childhood curiosity and ingenuity, her special interest, and the ability to subtly stim with hard-light without being caught out.)

The Vishkar executives are mortified.  To see one of their top agents acting in such a way is unspeakable. Never have they been so embarrassed.

And yet – and yet – Vishkar receives several rather hefty offers of work in the following days.  It seems a number of important executives were impressed by how happy the children were at the end of a long business evening, and were even more impressed by the intricacy of the toys they brought home.  If this level of craft can be achieved on the fly, we look forward to seeing more work done by you in the future, Vishkar is told.  Satya isn’t punished, and she remembers it as being one of the most enjoyable evenings she had had in a very long time.

(She’s still in contact with one of the little girls who had been so intrigued by the wireframe – Satya might recommend her as a candidate for the Academy if her interest holds, and it seems very likely it will.)

Yeah, I dunno, I’m having a lot of feelings about this now. Imagine once she joins Overwatch and after a mission they end up with a bunch of distressed, traumatized children while they try to relocate parents. Everyone’s scrambling, trying to figure out how to calm them down, look for Ana because, hey, she’s a mom, how do you child???? Only to find a moment later that Symmetra of all people has gotten right into the centre of the children’s cluster and they’re all… surprising… calmer. (Everyone on the team is Baffled because they’ve know Symmetra mostly as a very rigid, professional, and cold sort of person, and yet her she seems to be all gentleness and sweetness – they start to realize maybe there’s more to the Vishkar retainer than meets the eye.)  Or heck, even just let her meet Törbjorn’s mob of kids! Give Satya kids!!

and while we’re on the subject, let her meet this child again, give me that angst I need it

JB Imagine - College AU (Part 7)

A/N - Here’s part 7 to JB’s college AU~ I’m not too sure where I want this story to after this so if you’ve got any ideas or requests for what you want to see then let me know! Enjoy~

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 8 | Part 9

Waking up after a night with Jaebum always made you happy. There’d be numerous occasions where he had an early lecture to get to while you had the luxury of staying in bed. Whenever this was the case, he’d leave you a little note beside your pillow for when you woke up. This morning’s was “I love her and that’s the beginning and ending of everything” - F. Scott Fitzgerald - all my love, Jaebum ♡ A quote you had soon learnt was from one of JB’s favourite novels. He had asked you for your opinion on it early into the relationship which led to him gushing about his love for the book, story and the complexity of its characters. The way he would speak so passionately about it was admirable and you could sit there while he talked for hours. Everything about JB interested you and kept you yearning to learn more about him and what he was like beneath the surface. He was the same with you though, constantly asking questions and trying to learn more and more about you; too hungry to be close to you to talk about anything else.

As you got ready to go and surprise JB after his lecture and treat him to lunch, your phone buzzed with a text from Mina. She mentioned going on a double date and bringing Jinyoung and Jaebum with you which made you excited. The four of you were all close anyway but going out for lunch together would be even better. Plus you hadn’t really seen Jinyoung and Mina together as a couple yet apart from the few nights Jinyoung stayed over. You quickly texted back that you and Jaebum would be happy to g for lunch with them and grabbed your handbag before leaving the flat and heading to the lecture theatre JB was in. You arrived just as people started filing out and smiled brightly at JB who looked rather surprised to see you.
“And what happened to your usual ritual of staying in bed till 11?” He asked, smirking as he leaned in to kiss you sweetly, trying to ignore the chorus of “aw”s from the surrounding audience.
“Well for one, I wanted to see you and second, we may or may not be going on a lunch date later with Jinyoung and Mina.”
“Are they actually together now then?”
“Yeah, I must have forgotten to mention it. They made it official a week or so ago but Jinyoung’s been coming over more often than that.”
“So that’s why you’ve been wanting to come more then, to avoid the happy couple.”
“It’s not that I want to avoid them. More just I’d rather sleep in a quiet apartment that’s not being contaminated with the sound of them going at it.”
“And what about when you contaminate my flat?”
“Shut up. That’s different. Besides, you like it when I do so shush,” you teased, sticking your tongue out at your boyfriend before he locked his fingers in yours and the two of you walked in the direction of the library where you would spend the time before going out for lunch with Jinyoung and Mina.

Soon enough, you and Jaebum were walking to the little restaurant where you had arranged to meet up with Jinyoung and Mina. As you arrived, you saw the two standing there completely lost in each other’s eyes. It was quite clear they’re relationship was new because of the expression they had on their faces; pure admiration for the other. When the two of you reached them, they somehow managed to snap out of their little daydream and greet you before going in and ordering food. Conversation flowed easily between all of you and many laughs were shared as you chatted whilst waiting for food. It was comforting for you to have Mina there with you on the date since you still managed to get nervous around Jaebum when you were alone on a date. He also got your heart beating that little bit faster when he looked at you and smiled as if you were the most beautiful thing on the planet.
“So I heard you two made things official last week?” JB asked the two, giving them a little smirk, succeeding in making the couple blush.
“Yeah, we thought we might as well since we spent so much time together,” Mina replied, looking at Jinyoung and smiling.
“You two are just adorable together,” you mused as your hand found its way into JB’s.
“It’s funny you should say that because the reason why we decided to go for it and date each other was you two,” Jinyoung said, confusing both you and JB.
“What do you mean?” You asked him.
“Well seeing how cute you two are together made both of us a bit jealous because we wanted something like that. But also just the way how you two so effortlessly started dating after being friends. I don’t know, it just got us thinking we should try things out. And I’m glad we did,” Jinyoung answered, making JB squeeze your hand a little tighter under the table.
“Now you’ve said that I feel like we’ve got a lot to live up to,” JB laughed, turning to look at you.
“Yeah, we’ve got a reputation to uphold. Better be on our best behaviour. Speaking of best behaviour,” you said, turning your attention to Jinyoung and Mina. “I’m chill with you two spending the night together at our flat, but me and the other girls need some kind of warning so that we can make plans or just at least be prepared for whatever weird ass noises either of you are going to be making.” Mina’s face blushed a deep red and she looked to Jinyoung awkwardly, embarrassment taking over.
“Don’t worry, (Y/N). We’ll tell you everything,” Jinyoung said, winking at you and laughing.
“Please, spare me all the details.”
“Oh no, I can easily tell you everything in detail just so you know what we’ll be getting up to.”
“Jinyoung!” Mina scolded, face still bright red as she feebly hit his chest.
“Well if you’re going to do that, I suppose we’ll just have to do the same then won’t we, (Y/N)?” JB said, looking at you.
“That makes sense. And we’ve got a lot more to tell than these two, I’m sure.”
“Okay, that’s enough,” Mina said, looking at all three of you. “No one needs to be discussing their sex lives at lunch. Speaking of, are we all done? Because I’ve got some essay prep that needs doing at some point this afternoon.”

The rest of the day went fairly smoothly and nothing out of the ordinary happened. Your one lecture of the day was fairly interesting and you had come out of it feeling satisfied with the topic. JB met you outside of the lecture hall as you had done for him and the other English students who had been there earlier commented on your cuteness. It had almost a ritual to receive compliments on your relationship so now you were almost unaware of it happening. JB walked you to his car and drove off to his flat where you had planned to stay for the night. You rarely bothered taking spare clothes with you since you knew JB would gladly give you something of his. He absolutely loved seeing you in his clothes and couldn’t get enough of it. He thought you looked adorable in his big sweaters that hid your hands from how big they were. But he much preferred to see you in one of his t-shirts that only just covered your hips the morning after a long night together. When you both had walked up to his flat from the car park, you dumped your bag down on the floor and made a beeline for the sofa and flopped down onto the cushions. Even though you’d only had the one lecture, you were exhausted. JB stood there, admiring you before a little slip of paper caught his eye. He bent down and picked it up, realising it was the note he had left you this morning that had just fallen out of one of your notebooks. He smiled to himself at the gesture and slid it back into the notebook before walking over to join you, the one he knew he was unconditionally in love with.
