i actually like the colors for once

warm and soft like a fireplace….a heith….

koclains  asked:

Hey! I have a lot of trouble with drawing eyes :( i struggle with size and shape especially... any tips?

Oh heck, hello haha um honestly I don’t really know what I’m doing, but I’ll try to answer as best I can!

I like to take pictures of my face and practice from my own eyes. here’s one and Here’s another one (this one’s a few years back heck)

those ones i just traced a base line over the pictures and then eyeballed the coloring. That’s really useful for getting shapes and angles down when the head is turned. good for drawing the same eye with different expressions and things.

I’m actually doing one right now for some new practice. this one I didn’t do a base sketch at all, I just started SLAPPIN’ color on there. I’ll post progress pictures once I finish it.

ALTHOUGH IF YOU DO THIS, I WOULD RECOMMEND SWITCHING IT UP A BIT AND USING OTHER PEOPLE EYES TOO. because I have a slight difficulty drawing girls with different eye shapes than my own haha oops

I would also recommend paying attention to lid shape, eyelash length, and the angle of the eyes as well as the basic shape. just little details that will set them apart from other eyes.

learning from real life is always super great

here’s my eyes, compared to my sisters. just showing how related people have similar but different eyes

sometimes starting with a circle helps

the same shaped eye with different lids

size differences

for coloring: Eyelids make shadows. eyelashes make shadows. light shows through the iris, depending on the angle.

hope that helped you a bit. mostly just learn from real life for coloring and shape and everything. and then apply it to your style. sorry if this wasn’t that helpful or anything. I’ve been a bit scatterbrained lately as well as busy. I hope i wrote everything i wanted to D:

Here’s all the things that I’ve been working on. (Have fun scroling.)

Fishing: digital painting walkthrough

So I got a question on anon asking me about my drawing coloring process, and unfortunately I accidentally deleted it, because I have clumsy fingers on mobile.

Thank you so much for your interest, I’m really honored! I will try and give a brief overview of my drawing process, and hope this is helpful or useful to you! I just started experimenting with Photoshop last summer around July, so I’m definitely not the most experienced, I’m still learning a lot!

I’m going to be using this drawing of Lapis, because it’s one of my favorite pieces and it is more detailed than my average drawing:

This drawing was inspired by the episode “Alone At Sea”, where I wanted to illustrate this concept:

This was my main reference, but I also throughout, used a lot of google images of water and colorful fish.

Sketch: My canvas size was 3000 px wide and 2000 px high. I tend to sketch with the standard brushes and I actually have like 2 layers of sketches (one for basic shapes/sizes of things, then one for rough details and things).

Lineart + base coloring: I add lineart, usually px size 6-8, with the pencil brush. I then add base colors, using the default solid brush. Usually they are the generic color I’m going for. I try not to get too stressed about the base colors because I usually cover most of them up.

Primary highlights/light sources: It gets more interesting once you establish primary light sources, so where the main light source is coming from, as well as reflections of things. I use a larger brush and add these on new layers, set to either overlay or screen or pin light. So I wanted light to be shining through the water, making the color reflect on Lapis, which is how it works with real light.

Detail/color: I think this is the most fun part, where you choose colors to paint over. I think I painted this the way I normally use watercolor, which is combining a lot of complimentary and contrasting colors with varying amounts of saturation. It’s more complicated to explain that, but it’s a lot of eyeballing. For example, referring to the reddish colors, I tried spreading them around the drawing instead of having them just in one place. The reddish fish reflects around the water bubble, and the light is reflected on Lapis’s clothing as well.

Highlights: This makes your drawing really stand out - often at this stage, many layers are on ‘luminosity’, ‘screen’ or ‘overlay’. I also do this with the lineart layer as well, so there are not just harsh black lines, which can be distracting. There are also secondary light sources, such as at the back of Lapis’s head, because I felt like there was still not enough red-orange in the drawing.

Small white lines also make a big difference (such as those on the bubble, and on the edges of her jacket/in her hair).

I later went and adjusted the color balance a bit, as well as increased the contrast so some more areas would appear darker and it was a bit less green in color.

That is kind of the overview! I hope this was helpful at all, or at least interesting! If you have any more questions I would be happy to answer, I enjoy rambling. Sorry if this was a bit long!

Thank you so much for taking an interest!

Writing Antagonists: (Aka, Your Villains and Bad Guys)

The antagonist is often either one of the most fun things to write, or the most dreaded. But either way, they are a key element of the story, and that cannot be ignored. So, let’s talk about how to make a really great antagonist.

You may have in the past met a writer or teacher or whomever who insists on using the words “protagonist and antagonist” over words like “hero and villain.” Personally, I am not so stingy about it, I feel that I know what you mean anyway so it doesn’t really matter- what there is a legitimate reason as to why you should at least try to think of your villain as your antagonist instead.

And that reason is connotation. Well, denotation too, really- villain and antagonist aren’t completely the same thing, but I’m bringing it down to connotation.

Simply said, when you think of the word “villain”, you’ll think something like “that’s the bad guy in the story.” And when you think of the “antagonist”, you probably think “that’s a fancy word for villain, aka the bad guy in the story.”

But antagonist isn’t just a fancy word. It’s a fancy concept. It means “the guy that opposes the good guy.” That can be on any argument or view. When writing your antagonist is to remember that nothing is black/white, good/bad thinking, and that includes your antagonist.

Let’s map out the steps to making a complex villain- aka, an antagonist.

First, remember that your antagonist (usually) is a person, just like your protagonist. It might help to develop them outside of their intentions first, and put a person to the upcoming reputation.

Background:

Chances are, your antagonist didn’t just rise up out of the ground ready to kill. They came from somewhere. Your readers don’t even have to know everything about your antag’s backstory, but you do, if you want to really understand them. It often holds the key reason as to why your antagonist is where they are. The drive behind anger, revenge, change, or pleasing someone else can come from the events in their background.

Why do they hold the beliefs they hold? Were they raised that way? Were they taught by some mentor figure? Were they cover from a reality they couldn’t bear? Are they trying to please someone, or get revenge on someone who displeased them? The answer should be in their background.

Motives/Beliefs:

Remember, every villain is a hero in their own mind. They believe that what they are doing is necessary, even if they recognize that it is unpleasant. What are they fighting for? Why does it matter to them so much, that they are willing to overlook all the harm they do?

“The Greater Good”: This is one of the more common and understandable villain motives. They believe that what they are doing now is paving the way to a better future. But keep in mind that what your antag views as a “better future” may be very, very different than the average opinion. Maybe a “better future” for them is a genocidal purge or the world ending in flames. Who knows.

That’s not the only type of motive. Be creative. Work with the information you established in your character’s background to find the most reasonable motive.

Tipping Point:

This is going to be related to your background and motive in an interesting way. Think of your antagonist as a character who has already completed their Character Arc and reached a negative end. Look at the points of change on the character arc- the ones that push your character farther down their path. What are those events? Those are the tipping points that prompted your character towards becoming they way they are now- those key moments where your character had a choice, and they chose to become bitter, hateful, vengeful, cold, or other negative things.

These could be the deaths of loved ones, the promptings of a mentor, or a moment of injustice that made them realize that the world isn’t always kind.

Personality/Actions:

This is the part where you develop them outside of their intentions. How do they behave?

It’s tempting to just say that your villain is a villain because they torture and kill people. But those are not the only things that make a villain a scary or serious threat. Some characters might jump to violence easier than others. Some might be more into psychological torment. Some might actually seem really charming or persuasive, which is frightening in it’s own way- they might actually be tricky enough to confuse you into making bad decisions on your own. Think about your character’s background again. What makes the most sense for them as a person?

Presentation:

This is how your antagonist comes across to others. Keep in mind that your reader and your other characters don’t know your antagonist like you do. How does this person present to the world?

-Are they open to discussion/negotiation?

-Are they open about their intentions?

-How quick are they to violence?

-What are their methods of war?

-When you meet them, are they charismatic, quiet, charming, vulgar? Do they have a sense of humor, or are they stoic?

-Do they seem to enjoy what they are doing, or do they express regrets even as they do it?

Moral Complexity:

What are they willing to do to achieve their goals? Do they have weaknesses in their personal lives?

1. Do they have noble ends behind their controversial means?

2. Is there a line even they won’t cross?

3. Do they have someone/something that they care about?

4. Do they prefer to do the killing/torturing etc themselves or do they just give the order?

Remember that if your antagonist does have any of these moral weaknesses, they are not going to want to show it. One has to keep up intimidating appearances, after all.

Speaking of appearances…

Appearance:

This part is here to tell you what not to do. There are certain appearances that are getting really old with villains.

1. Dressing in all black. Why do they even do that? It’s time to stop associating black with “bad” and white with “good”. It just isn’t like that, so stop making villains all dark and stuff.

2. Scars. I think scars are pretty cool, don’t get me wrong. But if there is no relevant reason for it to be there, don’t talk about it all the time. That goes for all characters, not just villains. Like the color black, scars are not just a villain thing. Everyone has them. Don’t associate them with “bad.”

3. Sexy. I get the idea that making a villain attractive makes them harder to hate, but that can be kind of a cop out of actual complexity. Again, if there is no legitimate reason to make your villain sexy, then don’t. It’s not necessary.

4. Ugly. I hesitate to call any traits inherently ugly, but if you’re striving to make your character unpleasant looking just because they’re bad, then once again, you are associating feature=evil, which is not creative at best and seriously socially harmful at worst.

Basically, your villains should be just as diverse as anyone else. You don’t need stereotypes to make them scary. Sometimes it’s scarier than anything else to just have an average person. It sort of adds to the idea that anyone could be a villain. And that’s pretty frightening.

Key Point:

- Complicate your villains. They’re not just Evil McEvilpants.

That’s it for now, but like anything else in writing, antagonists have a lot of possibility and exceptions. But that was your basic rundown on the things to consider when making a complicated antagonist.

Happy Nalu Day. 07.26.17

BNHA Headcanons part 2

Cuz ive rested and have no impulse control

Todoroki

- I really like the idea of him being like Captain Holt from B99.

- He once stared at a wall for five straight hours. Momo declared he was obviously thinking about life itself. He was actually just wondering what would happen if Pinocchio said “I’m lying.” When he told Izuku later they delved into a very intense conversation that has yet to be settled.

- His worst subject is English.

- His favorite color is yellow. When asked why, he just shrugs. But in reality its because his mom really liked keeping marigolds in the house when he was younger.

Bakugou

- This boi can style hair. Nobody believes him for a long time when he accidentally made a snide comment about it. Kiri is the only one who bothers to see if its true, and sports some crazy braids for a couple days. The girls are too scared to really ask for him to theirs tho. They don’t realize he actually really likes doing it. It reminds him of sitting around his mom’s hair salon.

- Cannot tell a joke. He’s tried. Three people left crying, and somehow Izuku was pissed. Nobody talks about that day.

- “Sorry for the mean, awful, accurate things I said.”

- Has gotten into a screaming match with both a parrot and a kitten. The Bakusquad no longer takes him to pet stores.

Mina

- “My last fuck just flew out the window, right behind Todo’s.”

- Really likes to ask questions. No one is safe. “Seriously, Shoji, do you have an actual mouth or…?”

- Is that person who would own a tarantula and name it Sweetums.

- Has drop kicked Mineta roughly seventeen (17) times. She’s going for a world record.

- Has a really nice voice.

Kaminari

- Has never actually played a pokemon game. Prefers Digimon. Kirishima nearly disowned him.

- Actually really respectful of personal bubbles. Mostly cuz he’s scared he’ll accidentally electrocute you. Hugs are rare.

- Never actually falls asleep during class. He actually just daydreams about random stuff.

- Irrationally scared of being invited to a pool party. Only swims if he’s the only one in the pool. But he’s not much of a swimmer to begin with.

Uraraka

- Hates texting. Prefers phone calls.

- She discovered her quirk by hitting the coffee table during a fit. They couldn’t figure out how to get it down for three hours.

- Is actually really fascinated by architecture.

- Her bucket list consists of going on a bungee jumping spree in which she makes herself levitate halfway down to give the people running it a minor heart attack, and learning how to tango. She cannot dance, so the second thing will take a while.

Tsuyu

- Not a morning person. She’s actually rather terrifying.

- Is not afraid to deck someone for touching her or her friends without consent. Bakugou witnessed this once, and she has since unknowingly earned his respect.

- Will cut your sandwiches into fun shapes and goes into mom mode when her friends are sick. Has carried nearly everyone to Recovery Girl for being sick with the flu.

- Her mom likes to tell her that her hair is like that cuz of a curse that was put on her as a baby. She believes her a little more everyday.

Please Watch “Orange”

Ok everyone. I’m sure some of you have probably heard of this anime, and those people who have heard of it have probably strayed away from it for the same reasons I did.

I am a huge fan of romance anime. I’m basically addicted to anything involving love, but I was weary of this show, called “Orange,” because (1) you learn from within the first few minutes of the first episode that the love interest is going to die, (2) it looks really cliché, (3) it is not very popular, and (4) it looks sad.

I was wrong. So very wrong.

(1) Yes, the anime has its bleak, raw moments, but those moments were the ones that I never had anticipated that I would appreciate the most. Something that definitely became an admirable point of the anime was its very real, non-sugar-coated portrayal of depression, mental illness, suicide, and grief. This series does what most shojou romance series shy away from and actually shows the audience what depression is like through Kakeru, the fated-to-die protagonist, and the seriousness of suicide.

As someone who has personally battled with clinical depression for years and has been to therapy and counselling, this anime hit home for me. The faking smiles, pretending everything is okay, the self-loathing, thinking you are at fault, thinking you are a burden to others, denying yourself happiness, not allowing yourself forgiveness, and the thoughts of death; they are all things that I could relate to. They even included how you can still experience moments of true happiness even if you are depressed, but how it never really goes away. Sure, this anime might not be as light-hearted as others, but it’s the heart-rending instances in this show that give it so much impact and substance.

(2) This anime does have some clichés (i.e. cultural festival, giving chocolates on Valentines Day, new kid at school sits next to the main character), but the plot completely colors these events in ways that make them so much more meaningful and different than you have ever seen them. One of my main concerns going into this show was that I would be bored, but I ended up watching it all in one sitting simply because of how much I needed to know what would happen. Additionally, the secondary characters are wonderfully fleshed out and are actually important to the plot, instead of feeling like accessories.

(3) I know this anime was based off of a manga (which I had once picked up on a whim, but put down once I saw how sad it was probably going to be), but I have never heard people talk about it, like ever. Even when the show came out (which it did recently), there was no buzz about it. Although the lack of chatter surrounding Orange only made me more pessimistic regarding the quality of the show, if there is anything I have learned from watching hundreds of anime, it is that sometimes good shows can fly beneath the radar. I am glad I decided to pick it up after it’s completion and give it a chance, because I just found a series that has easily earned a spot on my top 10 list.

(4) Is this anime sad? Yes. Is it too sad to watch? No. The biggest obstacle that stood in my way for this show was the fact that it pretty much promised from the get-go to be sad. “But love is supposed to be happy and have a happy ending,” you might say, “so how can that be possible when one of the protagonists is destined to commit suicide.” I don’t want to spoil it, so all I can tell you is that I was very pleased with the conclusion and it ends much differently than you are lead to believe it will. Trust me guys. My heart is made of glass. I would not recommend this show to anyone if I didn’t think the denouement was really good

So, in conclusion, set aside a few hours one day and let this series show you its magic!

I used to love pink until I was four, when I was confronted with the expectations that were associated with the color. I wasn’t a princess, why did every gift or item of clothing have to be girly? So I realised I had to step away from the color if I were to be treated as myself, but I was too afraid to ask, afraid to be abandoned. With an exception of a period when I was 14-15 years old when I made one last effort to try to be what was expected of me, I haven’t had any pink clothes since I was allowed to start buying my own clothes.

Now I feel confident in my skin, I have reclaimed what I had once despised as my worst enemy. I figured it was not the color that was my arch nemesis, it were the people who used it as a symbol of oppression, a method to decide on my future. I’m not taking it anymore, to police people on what to wear is like getting hostile towards people who like sugar in their coffee. You Don’t Have To Drink It. Actually you Shouldn’t drink it at all because it’s not even your fucking coffee. I feel good and empowered in pink, to me it is the symbol of growth and confidence.

SNAKE SOFT SERVE - posting this one all on it’s lonesome for a bit of an announcement!

If you want to see more regular updates (of art in general, or these snakes) I post to Instagram and Twitter more frequently.

I’ve also recieved a lot of questions/comments on wanting these as tattoos - I’m totally fine with you all doing that as long as credit is given! Once this series is wrapped up, I’ll be uploading actual flash as a pay-what-you-want PDF including cleaned up colors and lineart suitable to bring to a tattoo artist.

I’m also getting a few comments about wanting these as pins, but I’m going to finish this series and prob ask for a vote on designs before I move forward with anything like that!

Thank you so much for the warm responses to this, it’s so neat to see something goofy that I’ve been working on for fun received so well!

What Are Glamours

Glamours are a type of magic meant to change the way you are perceived by others. This can mean anything from making you seem more attractive, to more intimidating, to even letting you blend in with your surroundings. With all the different possible applications, this is the type of magic I have found to be the most useful

How They Work (Note: In my opinion. Yours may vary)

Imagine that there’s an aura of energy that surrounds you and is completely unique, like a signature. This energy acts like a filter for how people see you (as described in this post). Change the filter, and it will change the way others perceive you without actually changing your appearance at all.

This can be done a million different ways. I find it helpful to get familiar with your energy first. Meditate, and imagine what that energy around you might look like. What color is it? What texture? How much space does it take up? Once you have a good idea of what it looks like, it becomes a lot easier to manipulate.

How To Do Them

There are about as many different ways to do glamours as there are witches. Do some exploring to see what works for you. Do you like makeup? When you get dolled up, visualize the makeup going onto your energy. Are you a jewelry person? Push the energy you want to give off into the jewelry and wear it. I personally like to add a physical aspect to my glamours, but that’s not even necessary; you could simply imagine your energy changing in the way you want to.

Glamours generally stay on as long as you are putting energy into them. Most tend to go away as you stop thinking about them, but I have done glamours before that tapped into my energy for far too long and had to be consciously removed. If you find this happening, cleansing yourself and then grounding will usually do the trick.

  • Grew up with Jinwoo so getting a job was a no-brainer
  • “Ayo JinJin.”
  • “Hyung please., you made that nickname when we were like 7. When we’re at work I’m your boss.”
  • “wHeN wE’rE aT wOrK i’M yOuR bOsS.” Jinwoo threatens to put him in the soda bottle costume next
  • Always greeting customers with a smile and a bubbly giggle
  • “Hey I suggest the orange soda… It tastes like orange.”
  • If he sees a person crying or someone that looks generally unhappy/upset he’ll sit in their booth and talk to them until they smile or laugh
  • Tells all the girls to call him MJ Oppa, makes new customers promise to come back.
  • If you don’t see him upon walking into the store he’s probably in the back sneaking food or causing trouble to one of the other boys

  • The pretty face greeter, brings people into the store
  • The boys always make fun of him for having to go outside and invite the shy admirers in
  • Likes to turn the open and close sign
  • Opens the bottles in front of the tables
  • “It’s for effect, plus they seem to like it.”
  • “That’s because 1. they think you’re cute hyung. and 2. You giggle every time the bottle pops.”
  • Likes to keep the outside of the store clean (with the help of Sanha who likes to plant everything)
  • Low-key the mom of the boys, always reminds them of their shifts and such.
  • It got to the point where Jinwoo promoted him to shift manager
  • When he first started he broke at least 5 bottles/glasses a day out of nervousness

  • Also a Waiter at the store, but he tends to stay in the bakery portion of the shop
  • Dongmin met him in physics class and told Jinwoo about him, He started out as the cook but immediately got replaced when they learned he in fact could not cook
  • He tends to make random noises when he’s off in his world and that’s what makes him attractive to the customers (The cute quirky type)
  • Handles all the orders and puts them out for Myungjun or Dongmin
  • Always greets customers with a shy smile that makes them swoon
  • Steals sweets on the job and gets yelled at by Jinwoo and Minhyuk
  • “Hyung!! Did you eat a slice of that Red Velvet cake that I literally JUST put out.” Bin would have the most shocked look on his face while customers giggle because you can see the slight red on his hands and shirt and there’s even a stray crumb or two on his face
  • “Pssh what no. I learned my lesson Minhyuk.” The girls would think it’s cute and invite him over to eat cake with them too.
  • Always fights with Dongmin over who turns the sign but gives up because Dongmin gives him puppy dog eyes.
  • Makes 60% of the mess in the store (although sometimes he is taking the fall for Sanha)

  • Bus Boy/Cook/Store Entertainer Supreme
  • Actually started out as a bus boy but still cleans tables anyways
  • He got to be the cook after a busy rush came in and Jinwoo started to panic. Minhyuk just hopped into the kitchen and whipped out 5 batches of cookies and cakes like nothing
  • “Actually hyung, they come for the pretty face and stay for the cute cook”
  • Wanted to wear a kiss the cook apron to work but got scolded by mom Dongmin
  • The boys discovered he could dance after he danced around to clean up after closing one night You know like he was pushing the broom while dancing and shit (like another cinderella story with Selena Gomez) That night they also discovered Minhyuk could sing and rap
  • His nickname becomes Store Entertainer Supreme (After being changed from Disney Dude) because he always sings/raps the order and such (also the occasional Disney medley)
  • Jinwoo payed his first term to go to a dance company because he saw so much potential
  • Sometimes falls asleep on the job but Jinwoo lets it go because he knows how hard Minhyuk works.
  • One time he flipped the open sign before Dongmin could and he refused to look in Minhyuk’s direction for a week

  • Everyone loves his bubbly personality and that’s why Jinwoo allowed him to work there at such a young age
  • Gets babied by everyone, customers, workers, delivery people. Everyone
  • Likes to plant the flowers and fauna outside the shop “Because it makes it look magical and like a secret getaway.”
  • “Sanha you’re literally 6″ “6 foot, how’s the weather down there short stack?”
  • The boys have never seen Sanha run from someone so fast then he did in that moment from Jinwoo
  • Whines about the girls pinching his cheeks and calling him cute but secretly loves the attention
  • Once cried because Minhyuk accidently stepped on his new sunflower seeds “But they weren’t even growing yet.” “STILL YOU STEPPED ON MY CHILDREN.”
  • Once stole a cookie from the pan and Bin took the fall for him. Minhyuk found out and Sanha came to work the next day to see every single flower ripped out and un-color coordinated
  • Hates to see customers unhappy and vows to give every customer a flower and won’t let them go until he sees a smile.

wow okay that was a lot of fun and much less work than writing an actual scenario! I hope you enjoyed and if anyone liked it and wants more let me know!!
