The Hydraulic Analogy

There are a couple of times especially in engineering where it is easier to think of DC electric circuits in terms of hydraulic circuits and vice versa. And I think in this case it might help you as well.

Current: The amount of water flowing through a section of a pipe over time

Voltage: The difference in pressure between two points in the water circuit.

Resistance: Narrow constrictions offer high resistance and every pipe like every other wire offers resistance to the flow of water.

Power: It is the rate at which the energy stored in the water is used to drive a mechanical device like a water wheel.

Think of it like this: How fast the wheel is going to spin is dependent on the amount of water hitting it (current) and how much pushing this quantity of water does (voltage). 

(pressure = force applied / area)

Pascal’s Law tells us that pressure in a fluid depends on the height and density of the fluid. This is something that you’ve experienced firsthand if you’ve ever tried to dive in deep water. The deeper into the water you swim, the greater the pressure you feel, especially in your ears. Go deep enough and the pressure difference between your inner ear and the water becomes outright painful. 

In the video demonstration above, you’ll see how a tall, thin tube containing only 1 liter of water is able to shatter a 50-liter container of water. Not only does this show just how powerful height is in creating pressure in a fluid, but it shows how a fluid can be used to transmit pressure over a distance – one of the fundamental principles of hydraulics! B018 in Beirut

B018 is a music club, a place of nocturnal survival, designed by Bernard Khoury/DW5. The B018 project is, first of all, a reaction to difficult and explosive conditions that are inherent to the history of its location and the contradictions that are implied by the implementation of an entertainment program on such a site. B018 refuses to participate in the naïve amnesia that governs the post-war reconstruction efforts.

The project is built below ground. Its façade is pressed into the ground to avoid the over exposure of a mass that could act as a rhetorical monument. The building is embedded in a circular concrete disc slightly above tarmac level. At rest, it is almost invisible. It comes to life in the late hours of the night when its articulated heavy metal roof structure retracts hydraulically.
