The Glory of Tang Dynasty
Okay I didn’t intend for a review but I just finished the series and I just have so much feels. I will try to keep this spoiler free and just talk about the drama (although the actors already spoiled it at the press conference!).
To sum up…why? Why do you do this to Li Chu and Zhen Zhu? Why? How can you do this to them after what you put them through?
That big question aside, I didn’t read the original novel, and I’m not good with history. So as I watched and waited for the new episodes, I skimmed through the Tang Dynasty history with much focus on Li Chu/ Tang Dai Zong. There’s the Korean saying that leave when people are clapping - I just felt that the drama ended at a good timing. I don’t want to watch him getting “controlled” by Li Fu Guo and the other guy, was he Cheng Yuan Zhen? I can’t remember. Nor do I want to watch him and Du Gu lol. I also read that there were some differences between the drama and the novel, but on the whole I really enjoyed the drama. Li Chu is indeed an interesting emperor to develop on, and I got to say I really loved the him in the drama. Of course, since this is a novel based on Zhen Zhu, I love her just as much.
I’m never a fan of palace dramas, especially where the consorts and concubines fight. Though this is more on the political side, I’m just so glad I didn’t skip this one. I hated some characters at some point, but they redeemed themselves and most importantly, I feel for each and every single character, okay maybe not for Empress Zhang, and He Ling Yi, and a bit of Jing Yao. The whole drama can be summed up by Li Chu’s mother in the first episode, which is one of my most favourite scene too. It’s just a pity that Li Chu is fated to go down this road. The ending is freaking sad but this ending can make it to my top three favourite endings. Maybe I cried too much and isn’t in the right mind but I kinda love the ending, as sad as it is. Why? Why do I torture myself like this?
Allen is very charismatic and given his limited filmography and lack of training (school, I mean), he acted like no newbie. Although I have to admit that the dubbing by Zhang Jie was so much of a plus. Jing Tian, Shu Chang, Qin Jun Jie, Mao Zi Jun, Wan Qian, Yu Xiao Wei etc. I just love all the main casts as well as the supporting casts so much. They made me love each and every one of their characters at one point of time. I also loved all the settings and scenes, we always like production companies that really put in a lot of money and effort into dramas.
Though sometimes frustrated, I enjoyed the journey seeing how Li Chu became the emperor, and also the love story between Zhen Zhu and Li Chu. Li Chu just has too much burden on his shoulders. He tried his best to protect everything and everyone he cares for, but sometimes things just don’t go your way. The last episode for the first part got me crying, and the last two episodes of the second part got me crying like a freaking baby. I’m not ready to let go yet. While I rewatch my favourite scenes, and loop all the OSTs, I need to go rewatch all the fanmade videos I saved and just…drown myself in my feels.
Thank You, The Glory of Tang Dynasty.
