humane treatment of farm animals

On the farm

The other week we had the opportunity to visit the Cotswolds Farm Park - a farm dedicated to the preservation and education of heritage farm breeds from across the UK.  Prior to visiting the farm, I had no idea just how great the diversity of sheep and cows actually is in the UK. Many of these heritage species are currently endangered because the livestock industry does not support them.

I pet bunnies, piglets, about 10 breeds of sheep and goat and witnessed the birth of twin kids (baby goats).

The day on the farm did more than rejuvenate my spirits with lots of fluffy baby animals - I learned about the importance of heritage species and how small local farms not only promote humane treatment of animals but are important for protecting genetic diversity of species that are being wiped out by industrial agriculture.
