I don’t generally adhere to Pottermore; I rather prefer
examining canon as is, and drawing conclusions myself from the text.
However, I did think this was pertinent given the topic of today…and it’s from the Pottermore
book that JK released a while ago. In a
section about Horace Slughorn, she explained that Slughorn was overly jubilant
and relieved upon hearing about Voldemort’s
This was because Slughorn surmised that if Voldemort had
fallen, he couldn’t have created Horcruxes, and therefore, Slughorn was
innocent. Dumbledore tried to question
Slughorn about it, and then Slughorn resigned.
But that’s in November 1981.
We know that Snape was already at Hogwarts and teaching.
We also know that Snape didn’t take the Defence Against the Dark
…so what was he teaching, if not Potions? Did he teach something else prior to Potions? Was he, due to his youth, taken on as an
assistant to Slughorn, and he was suddenly elevated when Slughorn
resigned? Or had Slughorn moved on from Potions to DADA? (Would he even risk it?)
Or is it just a timeline mistake from JK?
It’s a curiosity. I
love the idea that Snape was very young when he took the position of Head of Slytherin – perhaps in
an absence of other candidates, but also as a demonstration of confidence and faith from
…but I also quite like the idea of Snape starting at
Hogwarts without the position, and it being dramatically thrust upon him due to
Slughorn leaving. Just as Dumbledore
tells Snape that he must do his duty and aid Harry, I could imagine him telling
him to focus his efforts on aiding his old house – that those children needed
And the reason I love that is because I think Snape at Christmas
of 1981 would’ve been a complete mess – mourning Lily, and coping with his own
Death Eater trial. I think becoming Head
of Slytherin would’ve been a fantastic distraction.
Still. Although it’s
a lovely thought, I can’t quite reconcile it with canon - I can’t fathom what else Snape would plausibly be teaching at Hogwarts, and I am certain he was a teacher in the 81/82 term.

Blackouts would occur from time to time, and the quality was generally poor. The opening ceremony was held at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. After the parade of nations and a speech by the president of the German Olympic Committee, the games were declared open by Adolf Hitler. Writer Thomas Wolfe, who was there, described the opening as an "almost religious event, the crowd screaming, swaying in unison and begging for Hitler. There was something scary about it; his cult of personality". Germany wins the most medals (89), with the United States placing second in numbers (56). The UK places 10th, with 14 medals.

King Edward VIII, the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, abdicates the British throne. He does so to wed Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. He famously said, "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility, and to discharge my duties as king, as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love." His brother, Prince Albert, Duke of York, succeeds to the throne as King George VI. George VI's elder daughter, Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), becomes first in the line of succession, as heiress presumptive.
Thursday, May 27, 1937:
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth are coronated at Westminster Abbey in London. The return procession to Buckingham Palace was over six miles in length, making it the longest coronation procession up to that time; crowds of people lined the streets to watch it, over 32,000 soldiers took part, and 20,000 police officers lined the route. The event was designed to be a public spectacle, which was also planned as a display of the British Empire. May 1937 included a programme of royal events lasting nearly the entire month to commemorate and mark the occasion. In the lead up to the coronation, guests from across the Empire and around the world assembled on Buckingham Palace, and official receptions were held to welcome them; amongst those attending were Indian princes, and, for the first time, native African royalty. For the event itself, the prime ministers of each Dominion took part in the procession to the abbey, while representatives of nearly every country attended. Contingents from most colonies and each Dominion participated in the return procession through London's streets. It was also the first coronation to be filmed, as well as the first to be broadcast on radio.

The film opens to a tremendous critical success, with many reviewers hailing it as a genuine work of art, recommended for both children and adults. By May 1939, its total international gross of $6.5 million made it the most successful sound film of all time. Noted filmmakers such as Sergei Eisenstein and Charlie Chaplin praised the film as a notable achievement in cinema; Eisenstein went so far as to call it "the greatest film ever made". The film inspired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to produce its own fantasy film, "The Wizard of Oz", in 1939. Within two years, Disney completes "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia", and had begun production on features such as "Dumbo", "Bambi", "Alice in Wonderland", and "Peter Pan".

Churchill said that Europe's fate lay in the hands of "the extraordinary man at the summit of Germany. He has raised the country from defeat; he has brought it back again to the foremost ranks of power. It would indeed be a fatal act if he were to cast away all he has done for the German people by leading them into what would almost certainly become a world war."

The stamp of genius was upon him, though it was an undisciplined and unpredictable genius.... There was within him an unspent energy, an untiring force, an unappeasable hunger for life and for expression which might have carried him to the heights and might equally have torn him down." Thursday, August 31, 1939:
It is the day before Tom Riddle is set to take the Hogwarts Express from King's Cross in London. The British fleet mobilizes; Operation Pied Piper begins in London. On the morning of Thursday, August 31st 1939, news outlets across Britain were all reporting the same thing. In the coming days, millions of vulnerable civilians would be evacuated from the country's centers of industry and shipping for their own safety. The government feared aerial bombardment of cities and towns, something the world had so recently witnessed during the horror of the Spanish Civil War. "Evacuation Begins To-Morrow," were the words printed in large type across the front page of newspapers like the Express and Echo in Devon, which quoted the government announcement on evacuation: "It has been decided to start evacuation of the school-children, and other priority classes, as already arranged under the Government's scheme, to-morrow, Friday September 1st. No one should conclude that this decision means war is now regarded as inevitable."
Friday, September 1, 1939:
At 11:00 AM, Tom Riddle boards the Hogwarts Express, and sets off for Hogwarts. Operation Pied Piper begins evacuations of London. Nazi Germany invades Poland. On September 1, 1939, Muggle children arrive at their school, clutching their gas masks and rucksacks which they had been required to bring to school for over a week in anticipation of the evacuation. They are organized in squads of fifty, with at least five teachers per squad. A banner giving the school name and colors leads each squad. Teachers wear bright-red armbands with the school numbers in black lettering. They were then marched to the train stations. Some mothers followed behind weeping, and a few had to be restrained by the police, from joining their children or snatching them back. Other children mustered at their local primary school, carrying their gas-mask, toothbrush, change of underclothes and label. Many of the evacuees thought they were going on vacation. In his Mass Observation diary, Joseph Welbank describes a conversation with a school mistress the night before the evacuation. "I said 'I bet the kids feel miserable don’t they?' She said 'No fear, they are looking forward to it. Some of them are sorry there wasn't a war last September. They want the holiday. That's the best way to look at it." This shows that many of the children did not know what was really going on, or why they were being evacuated. Some younger children had even arrived with shovels and pails, having been told by their parents that they were going to the seashore. The biggest problem for the evacuees during the long journey was a lack of food and water. Teachers had forbidden the children from bringing any water, the "official" reason being to avoid broken glass, but in truth, they did not want to worry about children having to use the bathroom. Fruit, such as apples, oranges, and pears, were used as thirst quenchers. When the children arrived at the railway platforms, they were loaded onto whatever train was available, with little effort to control their destinations. School groups and families were broken up in the rush to get everyone on trains. Parents were told that their children would send them a postcard notifying them of where they were once they had reached the reception area. One mother was overheard saying, "She (her youngest child) cried a lot last night…wish I knew where she was going." Other parents saw the disorganization and secrecy as reasons to evacuate their children privately.
Sunday, September 3, 1939:
Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declare war on Germany. By this point, nearly 1,437,000 people had been moved from British cities without a single casualty or accident. Evacuees are lower in number than anticipated by the British Muggle government. In London, only half of the schoolchildren went at this time. Nationwide, 827,000 schoolchildren, 524,000 mothers and children under five, 13,000 expectant mothers, 7,000 handicapped people, and 103,000 teachers and helpers were all evacuated. Aside from the complaints of mistakes in the evacuation, most of the hosts' grievances regarded child guests who were "verminous, bed-wetters, liars, thieves, had no respect for property, unclean habits, rude, quarrelsome, stuck-up, gave no assistance in the home, and would be too expensive to keep". Most of these problems were "diseases of poverty," which helped to make the middle and upper classes, as well as the poor people of the countryside, aware of the "deep and shameful poverty which exists to-day in the rich cities of England". E.A. Stebbing wrote in his diary for Mass Observation, "If good can come out of evil, then this war is surely doing good in showing people how other people live. There is no doubt that people in this district have been taken aback by the habits and conditions of the life of slum children." The hosts would have been more sympathetic to the conditions of their evacuees had London been bombed, but since it was not, they felt that the exposure to these dirty habits and "diseases of poverty" was unnecessary and their moods quickly changed from sympathetic to hostile. There was also the question of decent clothing. Many slum children were ill prepared for evacuation. Some arrived with little clothing, and others had clothes that were not suited for the wear and tear of country living. Kind foster parents felt it their duty to re-outfit children who came ill prepared. They often did this at their own expense, and then asked the parents to pay later, which caused issues because many parents could not afford new clothes for their children. In some towns, charitable funds were organized for children who had insufficient clothes or shoes and the government secretly distributed thousands of pounds for the poorest and most "necessitous cases". The children in London, who had not been evacuated, were left without school for several months. Since the government had expected more people to take part in the evacuation, they had re purposed many of the schools for the war effort, and sent all of the teachers to the country with the evacuated children. Doctors and social workers began to note the physical deterioration of the children left behind, because of the absence of school supervision, medical services, and school milk. The government was reluctant to re-open the schools in the evacuation areas, because it meant admitting the evacuation had failed.

Tom Riddle is now 13 years old, and midway through his second year at Hogwarts. Rationing begins in the UK. Great Britain begins issuing ration books containing coupons for bacon, butter and sugar. Shortly after, tea, jam, biscuits, breakfast cereals, cheese, eggs, milk and canned fruit rationing were introduced. Later, as the war continued, many more items of both food and non-food items were introduced including meat, petrol, clothes, tea, and soap were rationed. The Ministry of Health records that 43% of the unaccompanied schoolchildren had returned home. Overall, Operation Pied Piper is considered to have failed, because by the beginning of 1940, almost 700,000 evacuees in England and Wales had returned home.
Snape’s Worst Memory happened after Sirius’ werewolf prank.
I’ve seen countless posts talking about how the werewolf prank was the climax of the big war between Snape and the Marauders.
It sort of makes sense - you can see the progression of James maturing from attacking Snape at the lake to saving him by the Whomping Willow. There’s a beautiful idea in James not realising just how serious his behaviour had been over the years, and then when Sirius takes things a step too far, James realises and not only saves Snape, but calms things down moving forward.
Only, sadly, the timeline is the other way around.
The distressing, inconvenient truth is that after Sirius recklessly sent Snape down to a transforming werewolf, putting his life into danger (and it must’ve been in danger to invoke a life debt), James thought it was absolutely fine to bully Snape at the lake because he exists.
Here’s how it fits together:
Lily reassures Snape that they’re still friends - best friends.
“…thought we were supposed to be friends?” Snape was saying,
“We are, Sev…”
Moments later, Lily challenges Snape about the events on the night of the werewolf prank:
She dropped her voice. “And you’re being really
ungrateful. I heard what happened the other night. You went sneaking down that tunnel by the
Whomping Willow, and James Potter saved you from whatever’s down there –”
Snape’s whole face contorted and he spluttered, “Saved? Saved?
You think he was playing the hero? He was saving his neck and his friends’
Despite their disagreement, they finish their discussion as friends:
Harry doubted that Snape had even heard her strictures
on Mulciber and Avery. The moment she had insulted James Potter, his whole body
had relaxed, and as they walked away there was a new spring in Snape’s step…
Later, Snape’s Worst Memory happens:
And the scene dissolved…Harry watched again as Snape left the
Great Hall after sitting his O.W.L. in Defense Against the Dark Arts, watched
as he wandered away from the castle and strayed inadvertently close to the
place beneath the beech tree where James, Sirius, Lupin, and Pettigrew sat
But Harry kept his distance this time, because he knew what
happened after James had hoisted Severus into the air and taunted him; he knew
what had been done and said, and it gave him no pleasure to hear it again… He watched
as Lily joined the group and went to Snape’s defense. Distantly he heard Snape
shout at her in his humiliation and his fury, the unforgivable word:
Following which, Lily cuts ties with Snape completely:
Yuuri’s school for magical bratty ice-skating children
Or the AU in which Yuuri used to be muggleborn Slytherin during the 2nd Wizarding War who despite being magical still decided to become a muggle figure skater as that sport doesn’t really exist in the wizarding world and he won’t let go of his dream that easily.
Everyone else is still a muggle figure skater and canon happens until they are all in Hasetsu and Yurio suddenly has a big magical accident. Turns out there was an error in the system and somehow Yurio’s magic was left undetected until now and he really needs to learn control it fast. Of course he wants nothing to do with those stick waving freaks especially since the pig also seems to be part of that weird cult that wants to kidnap him and teach him “magic”. He has no time for that crap. He needs to prepare for his senior debut.
But in the end even Yurio has to grudgingly agree that he needs to find a way to stop the magical outbursts or he won’t be able to train properly let alone perform in a competition. Yurio is about to get (forcefully) shipped off to the nearest school for magic when Yuuri intervenes and manages to get permission to be Yurios magic teacher for the next couple of months until he either manages to control his magic or fails which would mean no skating and boarding school for Yurio. Yuuri knows exactly how hard it is to practice figure skating without a coach or resources in a magical society where ice skating is nothing more than a fun activity you can do in case a lake freezes over and he doesn’t want Yurio to have the same problems he had if he can help it. And with that Yuuri becomes a teacher and Yurio his unwilling student.
Of course as a muggle Viktor has no idea about any of this and simply assumes Yurio is secretly teaching Yuuri some jumps at first.
Something I’ve been mulling over is First Wizarding War timeline. I find the wiki timeline somewhat off in terms of Voldemort’s rise to power, so I put this together for my own reference. It’s by no means comprehensive, but gives a rough idea in terms of timeline and how bad things were and I’m posting it in case anyone else is interested. This is how I write my personal timelines, I’m sorry.
1945 – Tom Marvelous Riddle graduates from Hogwarts. He is stunning on the outside, a fabulous painted Easter egg. He’s charming, handsome, smart, and has a little gang of angsty, goth, dark glamour nerd followers. On the inside, he’s what Dumbledore suspected: rotten and stinky. He’s already opened the Chamber, killed Myrtle and framed Hagrid. He paid a little visit to kill off daddy dearest and his grandparents. He knows about Horcruxes because Sluggy dropped the ball and was an idiot. He applies to Hogwarts for the first time but is rejected; he rejects Slughorn’s offers to help him land a Ministry job; and goes to work at Borgin and Burkes.
1946ish - He flirts/schmoozes Ms. Smith, goes all Gollum/my precious and kills her, frames her poor old house elf, steals the cup and locket, and skips town whistling.
Late 1940s, Early 1950s – Vague, vague, very vague: Albania, dark magic, coming up with an evil bad guy sketchbook, working out anagrams for Tom Marvolo Riddle.
1956-1957 – Jazz hands! I’m back, England, and I’m Voldemort now, bitches. LORD VOLDEMORT. He comes to Hogwarts 10 years after Hokey’s memory. He’s at Hogwarts to apply for the Defense position and also to hide his tiara. Here, his appearance is markedly different. He’s not quite skin crawling, but you do a double take and his voice is chalk on the board. He’s going by Lord Voldemort now. Rumors of his doings have already reached Dumbledore, who is disappointed and angry. His followers-the old school crowed-are known as Death Eaters, but they aren’t notorious yet. These things are largely unsubstantiated, rumors, but they do exist and are known.
1950s-1970ish –The rise of Voldemort: bad guy building an army Disney montage. He’s still flapping around and continuing to research his dark arts. He’s getting fuglier. He’s splitting his soul and making horcruxes. He’s also working hard to incite fear and amass an army. He’s collecting followers, gaining support, negotiating with werewolves, giants, etc. Vry vry busy.
1970-1981 – The Wizarding War is in full force. Dumbledore says in the first chapter that there’s been precious little to celebrate for eleven years, he says that twice, just for emphasis. Voldemort is actively at war with the Wizarding World and vice versa. This, ironically, marks the entirety of Lily’s time in the Wizarding World (cue sobs). It’s not like things ramped up in James and Lily’s 7th year; it’s maybe that they just became more aware of the goings on. JK tells us that the FWW, while longer than the SWW, wasn’t as bad, largely because the Ministry hadn’t been overtaken and Voldemort couldn’t radically infiltrate and control the entire society the way he did during the second war. But it wasn’t a frolic in a field of daisies, obviously, because the bastard used werewolves, inferi, giants, and all manner of dark creatures. He used the Imperius on Ministry officials, half of Diagon Alley was shut down, the Ministry issued worthless “safety” pamphlets, and the Prophet was spewing misinformation or no information at all. Things were basically a gigantic cluster. No one knew who was on what side, all vry confusing. People were terrified for their lives and their family’s lives. The Ministry was more fucked than usual, which is saying something. Muggles are dying. Like people disappearing and being tortured left and right. Dark marks over houses. Terror. Panic. Confusion. Other negative descriptors. Bad shit, ok?
1978 – MWPP/Jily joins the Order. I think it’s fair to say that the Order has been in existence for some time and they are some of the youngest members.
Late 1979/1980 – the Prophecy is made and Snape is like OMG master what I heard and Voldemort was like say what? and the Potters went into hiding. Harry is born! Maybe the giants fall. Crouch lets Aurors use the Unforgivables.
1981 – The Order is systematically dismantled based on information from Peter the spy. Voldemort announces the prophecy, it’s the POTTERS. Snape goes OH HELL and tries to backtrack but too late. Harry doesn’t die but his parents die trying to protect him. The Wizarding World is like really? Then it’s over now? Partay! (Sorry Potters.) They build a statue. Sirius goes to Prison. Peter becomes a rat. Voldemort pulls a Dark Lord Sauron and skedaddles the hell out of dodge. Death Eaters torture Fralice, the other tragic OTP, people are SUPER outraged. Man (so many) Death Eaters go to prison. The rest call cursed! and move on with their lives.
So that was a mess but that’s the First Wizarding World according to Lindsey.
Hello I was wondering do you have any ships? I mean do you ship anyone in harry potter? I personally love dramione! Also what do you think of Draco Malfoy annnd lets say ron wesley?
Oh man I have a lot of ships and some ships depends on when in the timeline of hp and how I’m feeling that day. So here’s a list of ships that I like: Sirius/Remus, Remus/Tonks, James/Lily, Molly/Arthur, Lucius with himself (what a narcissist), Marlene/Dorcas, Luna/Ginny (such a pure and healthy ship), Harry/Draco, Bill/Fleur, Dumbledore/his socks (I’m joking please don’t take that seriously), Rose/Scorpius in the event that Drarry happened, Albus/Scorpius in the event that cannon happened, Theo/Blaise, Dean/Seamus, Salazar/Helga, Lavender/Parvati, I sometimes ship Hermione/Viktor, I also sometimes ship Lee Jordan/Fred, Frank/Alice, sometimes I ship Teddy/Victoire, Hermione/Pansy would be an interesting ship. For the sake of this getting too long I’ll stop. I ship a lot of people together and I also don’t ship some people at all. Like Neville, Charlie, McGonagall, etc. To me these people are very happy with their lives and their careers and don’t have any desire for a partner. The only person I really ship with Harry is Draco. I never saw Harry and Ginny going beyond being friends. I’ve never really shipped Dramione but I can see the appeal. I don’t think I’ve ever considered Draco and Ron, seems like a weird ship to me. Wow this is long, my bad.
The Prince’s Tale: Talking to Dumbledore’s Portrait
Forget Harry Potter as a whole series - you could write a dissertation on The Prince’s Tale chapter in itself; it’s an astonishing information dump of a chapter, where we suddenly discover how the series hangs together.
But one of the most fascinating sentences in The Prince’s Tale is rarely discussed:
And the scene shifted. Now, Harry saw Snape talking to the portrait of Dumbledore behind his desk.
It’s so inconsequential, you barely see it. But this is Severus Snape - wanted murderer - standing in the Headmaster’s Office at Hogwarts, talking to the portrait of Albus Dumbledore.
This is before the scene at Malfoy Manor; and therefore, before the disagreement between Yaxley and Snape as to who holds the correct information about Potter’s leaving date - but after Snape has murdered Dumbledore.
Why is this important?
Well, Severus Snape is appointed headmaster after the Battle of the Seven Potters - and therefore after the scene at Malfoy Manor:
Severus Snape, long-standing Potions master at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and wizardry, was today appointed headmaster in the most important of several staffing changes at the ancient school. Following the resignation of the previous Muggle Studies teacher…
So Snape is in Hogwarts - in the Headmaster’s Office, no less - when he is supposed to be on the run for Dumbledore’s murder. Yet here he is, chatting away to his portrait master seemingly without a care in the world.
But it’s not because he’s already headmaster - because he isn’t. He hasn’t strolled up to the castle with Ministry approval; this is happening whilst Snape has no legitimacy at Hogwarts, and if the staff knew he was there, they’d surely hunt him down.
Previous summers notwithstanding, I find it implausible that the teachers would leave the grounds en masse for their holidays, leaving the castle vulnerable to a hostile takeover - so he hasn’t waltzed into the castle because McGonagall and Flitwick fancied a week in Majorca.
So how did Snape get into the castle without being caught?
Well, when would they all have been busy? When would all of the staff have been otherwise occupied, and not expecting any sort of an ambush?
The day of Dumbledore’s funeral.
How fantastically beautiful that Dumbledore’s portrait was briefing Snape, his most trusted spy, on his next steps in the war - whilst the rest of the wizarding world stood outside, sobbing over Dumbledore’s death at the hand of his apparently traitorous member of staff.
Hello! Brightki referred me to you. Do you think you can help me find a SS/HG fic? Time travel AU where HG disappears in RoR to 1st war era. HG/SS spy behind enemy lines, HG is disguised as Pure/HB? They return to RoR together in the future where Potter's are alive .Fic I'm thinking of ends with HG/SS returning to the RoR in the future where they run into an alive and older Lilly Evans (Potter) where she and SB and James(?) Are teachers at Hogwarts. The kids in the Halls recognize them as the
The kids in the Halls recognize them as the 1st war heroes, and eventually HG meets HP in this timeline. He pulls our her old diary that she left in the past that mentions him. Trying to find it has been driving me mad for ages. I think I remember a portion of the story where HG has to befriend the Black sisters and gossip about LE when she confronts SS at Hogwarts gala. SS.HG stay at Malfoy manor and Lestrange Manor where HG gets tour from Rodolph L. Hope you can help, its been drivin us nuts
Summary: Still struggling with the aftermath of the war, Hermione decides to leave everything behind to go find herself. She travels further than she could have ever imagined without going anywhere at all. Along the way, she discovers someone she mistakenly thought she’d known…
potters go into hiding (sometime during pregnancy - reasons unknown. but NOT because they knew, specifically, that voldemort was after them, because he doesn’t decide that until after. i don’t think they knew about the prophecy, so - fall 1979-spring 1980)
trelawney tells dumbledore prophecy (sometime during pregnancy, shortly before hearing it - spring 1980)
snape tells voldemort about the prophecy (we’re told he immediately goes and tell shis master - spring 1980)
voldemort decides it is the potters he wants to go after (after july 1980).
snape immediately goes and tells dumbledore that voldemort is after the potters; begs him to intervene. (IT IS COLD AND RAINY AND WET AND NO LEAVES ON THE TREES so fall. or winter 1980)
i’m going to call this going down in fall of 1980, and here’s why: it is cold and nasty outside when snape goes and begs dumbledore. we know that a spy (peter) was active within the order for round about a year, so fall 1980. i def think voldemort may have decided ‘YES, THE POTTERS’ immediately after harry was born, but he would’ve been born in hiding and that information may not have been common knowledge. it may not have reached him until fall 1980. i think he approached peter in his quest to get to the potters or get information about them. WHAT IF HE APPROACHED PETER AS A WEAK LINK TO THE ORDER AND IT WAS DIVULGED THAT THEY’D HAD A BABY BOY IN JULY. hmmm.
snape starts working for dumbledore on voldemort’s orders (well he thinks it’s his orders - september 1981 - we know this happened before voldemort’s downfall because he tells bellatrix that he took the potions position on voldemort’s orders)
dumbledore either discovers fidelius charm. this is my thought, personally. that he was always on the lookout for new enchantments, new charms, new wards, and came across this in his research. he tells the potters about it and offers to be their secret keeper (october 1981)
peter becomes secret keeper (october 1981)
boom DEAD (october 1981)
this is the only timeline that makes any kind of sense to me and it still doesn’t make very much sense but it is the best my mind can do
They reminded me of something I’d been meaning to post about: the curiosity of JK Rowling’s decisions when it comes to James Potter.
For the first four books, James Potter was an absolute hero - and the only dissenting voice was Severus Snape, who frankly, nobody took seriously anyway. Dumbledore compared Snape and James to Draco and Harry, so most readers assumed Snape/Draco and James/Harry were alike - most of us didn’t dream that Snape/Harry and James/Draco were the parallels.
…and everyone else waxed lyrical about James - he was brave, and wonderful, and brilliant, and talented, and cut down too soon…
And I get the ‘twist’ of James being a bully; I think it served an important narrative function. But what I find somewhat baffling is how JK made it very difficult to fully redeem James after - and I think there were two easy paths that JK could’ve chosen which would’ve made it easier for the reader to forgive James for his actions towards Snape.
1) Show James maturing by realising the consequences of his actions, and ceasing his bullying.
If we put the werewolf incident after Snape’s Worst Memory (it’s the other way around in canon), it puts James in a much better light. We would still see his horrible bullying of Snape ‘because he exists’ - but it would’ve been thematically interesting to see him get cold feet when Sirius takes things a step too far.
James saves Snape, acts heroically - and it dawns on him how serious the whole battle between them has become. I like the idea of him pulling Sirius in, and backing down. I like the idea of him choosing to be a better man than that, and I like the idea that Lily really warms to him because of it.
Of course, Lily has already cut ties with Snape - but I could see her being relieved that James prevented Sirius’ prank from going ahead - and I could see her approving of the fact that James saved Snape even though he didn’t like him. It’s emblematic of James doing the right thing, even if he doesn’t particularly care for the person involved.
But the way around that it is, well, it’s devastating. Here’s a kid who is tricked into going to meet a werewolf by Sirius, and James saves his life. Then, a few months later, the same two boys are hanging him upside down, filling his mouth full of soap and stripping him naked because: a) they’re bored and b) he exists.
The level of disconnect between the two events borders on sociopathic. No wonder Snape rants that James was only saving Sirius, Remus and himself from getting into trouble. In the first scenario, you could believe that James was thinking of his friends, but he also saved Snape because it was ‘right’. In the second - in canon, it’s easy to assume that Snape’s life was simply not a factor, and James really was just saving Remus and Sirius.
2) Give James a real reason to dislike Snape’s Slytherin stance on the train.
One of the things that I think is particularly cruel about Snape’s alignment with Slytherin is that he clearly had no real understanding of what the house was about.
The statement that causes James to pay the two any attention on the Hogwart’s Express is Snape saying:
“You’d better be in Slytherin,” said Snape, encouraged that she had brightened a little.
James is disparaging about the house, stating a Draco-esque line of:
“Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?”
In itself, it marks James out as a Draco style character, firmly placing your sympathies with Snape.
…but how much more interesting would it have been if JK had utilised James’ background at this point?
Snape was living in the Muggle world, with one Muggle parent and a seemingly disengaged magical parent. He clearly knew very little about Slytherin for him to wish that Lily, a Muggleborn, would be in the house - at a time when Voldemort was rising.
How devastating would it have been in hindsight if James had responded with something like:
“Slytherin? You both hate Muggleborns then?” James said, raising his eyebrow at the pair.
Lily looked at Snape, confused. “I am a Muggleborn.”
“Slytherins don’t hate Muggleborns,” Snape retorted, hotly.
“They do. I should know.” Sirius scoffed. “My whole family have been in Slytherin.”
“Blimey,” said James, “and I thought you seemed all right!”
“Maybe I’ll break tradition. Where are you heading, if you’ve got the choice?”
James settled back in his seat.
“I’m going to be in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart! Like my dad.”
Lily nudged Snape, her voice low and her face troubled. “It’s not true is it, Sev? You said it didn’t matter that I was Muggleborn.”
“Of course it’s not true. Slytherin is the best house. You’ll see.”
James laughed out loud.
“Don’t you read the Prophet? Didn’t you see the front page yesterday?”
Snape fell completely silent, his cheeks flushing red. Sirius smirked at his lack of response.
“Or Monday? Or last Friday?” James’ grin grew wider as Snape stayed silent, and then James looked directly at Lily. “Slytherin is full of dark wizards and most of them end up in Azkaban!”
Lily’s face paled at his words. “Sev?”
James leant back triumphantly. “It sounds like you don’t know anything about magic at all, Sev.”
Snape scowled. “Come on, Lily. Let’s go and find somewhere else to sit.”
That scenario makes James entirely more sympathetic, even if he remains a little obnoxious. It gives him a reason to interject, and explains to Lily why he has a problem with Snape. Snape is unwilling to admit that James knows more than him about magic, so he doesn’t back down on his judgement of Slytherin.
It also helps to flesh out Lily’s house choice. She was already nervous about the concept of Azkaban from Snape’s stories, so it’d be credible that she would shy away from a house connected to it. It also gives her the idea of being in Gryffindor and it shows her trusting James’ judgement over Snape’s - which is important thematically for later.
It also gives Snape another reason to choose Slytherin; he doesn’t just do so because he wants to follow in his family’s footsteps, but because he’s now stubborn - now that James has told him he’s wrong to want to be in that house, he wants to be proven right.
It makes for a horrible heartbreaking moment when, as an adult, Dumbledore talks about him having been sorted too soon. It makes you wonder what sort of decision Snape would’ve made in different circumstances.
But crucially, neither of these things happened.
And I find that fascinating, because it makes James oddly unsympathetic. It’s not that he wasn’t great to his friends, and it wasn’t that he wasn’t loving to his family. James had a lot of finequalities, but his unwavering and unrelenting hatred and bullying of Severus Snape - when young Severus Snape had done nothing to deserve his ire - really damages his character.
And although the above scenarios wouldn’t have legitimised his bullying, it would’ve really helped the narrative - because it would’ve either clearly shown us that James was wrong, but then he changed…or that James was entirely wrong to bully Snape, but he had a logic - and a perceived justification - behind his dislike.
I find it curious that JK didn’t explore either avenue, because I think it would’ve made James’ character more powerful.

Who from your canon do you miss most?
Halexander from my kingdomstuck timeline, Remus from my hp timeline, and Dirk from any canon.
Can you explain the Lily and James being in hiding thing please?
Oh, boy. I will try.
This, as far as I can tell, is the canon timeline.(Please correct me if I’ve missed something, alright?)
Harry was born on July 31st, 1980. We don’t know if he was a few weeks early, a few weeks late, or right on time, so his conception date is somewhere between mid-October to mid-November 1979 (conception date for a baby actually due on July 31st is November 7th). They definitely thought Harry would qualify for the prophecy, so his due date had to be within that time frame…
For the longest time, we all thought that James and Lily had gone into hiding one week before the Fidelius charm is cast, in late October, 1981, as is mentioned in PoA. This makes sense until we talk about the prophecy in later books. Whether JK didn’t take this into account when she wrote PoA or not, I don’t know, but it seems likely.
Sybill Trelawney’s first prophecy was made in 1980-best as we can tell, early 1980. Dumbledore gives us a closer approximation of the time when he says, ”On a cold, wet night sixteen years ago, in a room above a bar at the Hog’s Head Inn…” (OotP, 37) Working backwards, it’s 1980, cold & wet implies early spring. Also, the prophecy tells us that the baby approaches, so she is pregnant when the prophecy is made.
“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches … born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies … and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not … and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives … the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies …”
Dumbledore tells Harry in OotP “‘As you and your friends found out to your cost, and I to mine that night, it is a place where it is never safe to assume you are not being overheard. Of course, I had not dreamed, when I set out to meet Sibyll Trelawney, that I would hear anything worth overhearing. My-our-one stroke of good fortune was that the eavesdropper was detected only a short way into the prophecy and thrown from the building.’ ‘So he only heard…?’ ‘He heard only the first part, the part foretelling the birth of a boy in July to parents who had thrice defied Voldemort. Consequently, he could not warn his master that to attack you would be ti risk transferring power to you…’”
Here, we find out that someone overheard the prophecy-a follower of Voldemort’s-which is how Voldemort finds out about it at all.
The story picks up in the Prince’s Tale, ch 33/DH.. “Harry seemed to fly through shifting shapes and colors until his surroundings solidified again and he stood on a hilltop, forlorn and cold in the darkness, the wind whistling through the branches of a few leafless trees….”
Here, we are given the same picture, that it’s still cold, that it’s forlorn, It’s very windy, and the trees are mostly leafless. Early spring, right? Certainly not summer, when the leaves would be full, when it would be warm. And it could be fall, but that doesn’t hold water with what we’re told later.
“‘Well, Severus, What message does Lord Voldemort have for me?’ ‘No-no message-I’m here on my own account!’ Snape was wringing his hands: He looked a little mad… ‘What request could a Death Eater make of me?’ ‘The-the prophecy…the prediction…Trelawney…’ ‘Ah, yes,’ said Dumbledore. ‘How much did you relay to Lord Voldemort?’ ‘Everything-everything I heard!’ said Snape. ‘That is why-it is for that reason-he thinks it means Lily Evans!’ ‘The prophecy does not refer to a woman,’ said Dumbledore. ‘It spoke of a boy born at the end of July…’ ‘You know what I mean! He thinks it means her son, he is going to hunt her down-kill them all-’ 'If she means so much to you,’ said Dumbledore, 'surely Lord Voldemort will spare her?’ Could you not ask for mercy for the mother, in exchange for the son?’ 'I have-I have asked him-’ 'You disgust me,’ said Dumbledore, and Harry had never heard so much contempt in his voice. Snape seemed to shrink a little. 'You do not care, then, about the deaths of her husband and child? They can die, as long as you have what you want?’ Snape said nothing, but merely looked up at Dumbledore. 'Hide them all, then,’ he croaked. 'Keep her-them-safe. Please.’ 'And what will you give me in return, Severus?’ 'In-in return?’ Snape gaped at Dumbledore, and Harry expected him to protest, but after a long moment he said, 'Anything.'”
So…Snape told Voldemort everything, Voldemort thought it meant the Potters and was going to come after them. My problem with this, in terms of the timeline JK sets up for us-that it all happened while she was pregnant-because it mentions that they have a son, two or three times, implying that she’s already given birth.
However, Snape wouldn’t sit on this information, right? He would tell Voldemort about the prophecy immediately. And Voldemort wouldn’t sit on knowledge like this, he would decide a course of action-who to go after-immediately. For me, logically, it does stand to reason that the prophecy, Snape telling Voldemort about the prophecy, Voldemort deciding it was the Potters, and Snape coming to warn Dumbledore all happened within a very short period of time.
So that’s what they did, they left school. James has gold, enough to support Sirius and Lily. So I suppose they lived off a private income. But they were full-time fighters, that’s what they did, until Lily fell pregnant with Harry. So then they went into hiding.
She doesn’t say that they go into hiding when Harry was born, or after, but when Lily was still pregnant. This is further confirmed by Lily’s letter to Padfoot, which establishes that during Harry’s first birthday in July, they’d been in hiding for quite some time.
Are there a few gaps in this? Yes. But JK has written this amazing, intricate series and this-timelines, it’s her biggest flaw. That there are a few holes in not the least bit surprising.
She does give us the confirmation that they went into hiding while she was pregnant, and as it’s the same interview where she tells us Dumbledore was gay, that Neville marries Hannah Abbot, and those are widely accepted as canon, I think we ought to consider this canon as well.
1977-1978-Lily & James get together, possibly defy Voldemort once 1978-1979-Lily & James get married, fight full time in the Order, narrowly escape Voldemort three times Oct-Nov 1979-Harry is conceived early 1980-prophecy is made early 1980-prophecy is told to Voldemort, who decides to go after the Potters early 1980-Snape warns Dumbledore early 1980-the Potters go into hiding, presumably at Godric’s Hollow, which (my headcanon, is a place that Dumbledore found for them, since it is his neighborhood, so to speak, and he would be familiar with it) July 1980-Harry is born October 1981-Fidelius charm is cast October 31, 1981-dead
I hope that this has been helpful and not a rambling mess.
Jangan! Pelajari sebanyak mungkin hal, at least dasar-dasarnya.
Eit, satu lagi. Matikan notifikasi kalau perlu. Tenteram deh dunia.
Mari berbagi.. :)
