Bumbleby and the Evolution of “Beauty and the Beast”

I’m just going to go ahead and get these disclaimers out of the way:

  • Yes, I know that Yang Xiao Long is primarily inspired by the fairy tale of Goldilocks.
  • Yes, I know that Rooster Teeth isn’t out to recreate every single fairy tale or myth or historical figure’s story that inspires the individual characters of RWBY
  • And yes, RWBY is a show that is about far more than just romance or any one relationship.

Is everyone good on that? Yes? Awesome, then let’s get this show on the road!

and okay i would have preferred Cogsworth and Lumiere but lefou wasnt the disaster i expected. yes, he does questionable things to earn his spot as Gaston’s compadre, to get the crumbs, the touches, anything. and yes he ignored his conscience to protect a person who seems to care for him. who sings and dances with him. who he sometimes thinks might maybe feel something. and then Gaston proves to Lefou what Belle has always known–he loves no one except himself. Lefou could slink back to the village but instead, he stays. he detaches from Gaston, and connects with another man. it’s a coming out story, which fits in nicely with the other queer undertones (google howard ashman).

Was it perfect? no. but the people who are bitching about this miss that the entire movie is a metaphor for AIDS. it’s everywhere, especially in the new lyrics. Ashman’s legacy is all over this thing, so no matter what you think of an arc you haven’t even watched yet go see the movie that became his legacy.

Finally saw Beauty and the Beast this weekend and holy shit “Evermore” is the Phantom/Jekyll & Hyde/Hunchback 11 o’clock number OF MY DREAMS! We are sooo lucky Alan Menken is still around. K back to the theater…

Belle was actually reading ‘Cinderella.’ Different animators will tell you different things, I just go by what Howard and Alan told me because I asked the same question. I said ‘What is she—- Here’s where she meets Prince Charming’ and they said ‘It’s Cinderella.’
