how many times have I written that?

What not to write in fantasy.

I’ve seen some posts going around on what not to write in fantasy, many of which amount to:

  • Don’t write evil kings.
  • Don’t write people who are evil for the sake of evil.
  • Don’t write bullies.
  • Don’t write villains at all actually.
  • Don’t write mentors.
  • Don’t let your characters learn how to do hard things on their own though.
  • Don’t write people on adventures.
  • Don’t write people fighting evil governments.
  • Don’t write any fantasy species ever written before.
  • Don’t write any fantasy trope ever written before.
  • Don’t write any fantasy plot ever written before.
  • Just… don’t fucking write fantasy I guess??

And this is such utter bullshit, my friends.

We do need more originality and diversity in fantasy, but we don’t need to remove everything that fantasy is and has been in the process.

(Especially, especially, when diversity is being included in traditionally cishet white male protagonist fantasy stories.)

Maybe the chosen one with special magic powers and a royal bloodline going on a quest with a group of friends to defeat the evil king has been done before with a white cis man a thousand times over, but how many times has a black trans woman got to go on that adventure?

Maybe elves and orcs have been written into the dust, but they still make great templates on which to tell stories with original twists, and there’s nothing about them that stops a good, emotional story from hitting you straight in the heart.

Maybe dragons have been done by every writer ever to write fantasy, but you know what? Dragons are fucking awesome, my dudes. Many readers are always gonna love them.

Maybe we have told the same fantasy stories over and over again, but every step you take away from the known template is a step you have to spend more and more exposition on before the reader will understand your original creation.

So don’t let anyone make you feel like that your (inclusive) fantasy story is too ‘traditional’ to be good. As long as you produce a well written story you’ve put your heart into, it’ll be a story many readers will love.

It has honestly been such an amazing experience watching Alex Danvers and Elena Alvarez.
I don’t know how many of you have watched One Day at a Time and Supergirl yet but seriously I was crying my eyes out.  I loved getting to see Alex come out and have her family support her so quickly and unwaveringly– and then getting to see Elena come out and her mom struggling with it a little was really moving in a way I hadn’t expected to to be moved?
I can write a lot about these two really, but mostly that I’m happy they’re being written and acted the the way are. I’m not out to my parents, and honestly I don’t know if I ever will be, and that kind of hurts not being able to share things like this with them.  So I’m happy I can share them with you all, these two coming out stories that we’ve gotten to see have given me comfort and hope and I am really excited for more c:

Sometimes I’ll be off doing stuff - laundry, errands, work, hanging with friends - and then check AO3 and see that I’ve gotten kudos on something or will get an email about a comment and it never fails to blow my mind a little, that while I’m sorting socks or buying broccoli someone has been reading something I’ve written and gotten something out of it. It doesn’t matter how many times it happens. It is a thrill and an honor and a source of happiness every. single. time.

Thank you, all of you, who have ever left kudos and comments for any of us. It’s such a gift.

Okay I’ve been shawol as long as I can remember (I cried so hard today) but I want people to know that Jonghyun is such a sweet little pie He was so kind toward others he listened to their problems and would talk about it even if he would get hate for it... his music spoke for himself on what he was feeling (he was very down to earth) I want him to be loved so much because he was so loving towards everyone just like the puppy he is 💛💛 He put people before him ❤️

My condolences to you dear and the warmest hug I can give  ❤️

Jonghyun was one of the kindest people I saw and I am not even exaggerating.  What broke me apart the most was thinking of all the people he helped but how no one could save him … He chooses well his words and knows how to ease the pain of others. I am going to share some of his beautiful songs and lyrics in his memory that will never sound the same to me after today. And yes his music spoke for himself … too bad I only realize it now …

Just Chill HERE

“Sometimes, I wanna be alone, in my empty room
I wanna lay in bed and not think about anything
Sometimes, I wanna push back all the things
that suffocate me and be quiet
Sometimes I get scared, am I gonna be forever alone?
Everyone thinks it’s a waste but it’s not too bad
I’m gonna be lazy in my quiet room all day, oh
Only gonna sleep”

‘Just chill’ is one of the songs I listened to when it rained. I loved being in a car driving back home while it was playing. I used to think it was just a song about being lazy someday and needing some alone time.but now …

Gloomy Clock HERE (A song he composed for IU)

I’m depressed, it’s depressing,
at this time, I’m depressed
I’m depressed, it’s depressing,
what time is it now? 11:30
I’m depressed, it’s depressing,
the gloomy clock ticks
I’m depressed, it’s depressing,
why did I eat the ramen? I probably gained weight
It’s raining, it’s raining,
making things sticky, it keeps raining
I’m sleepy, I’m sleepy,
I’m too lazy to do anything

This was the song I listened to when I was reading a book while sipping some tea. It felt so calming and their voices brought peace to my ears. Today just reading how many times the word depressed is written makes me out of words.

1000 HERE (It does have a special meaning to me because of the date it was released)

1, 2, 3, another day quickly passes
1, 2, 3, tomorrow is already almost here
Pressing down on my shoulders,
pinning down the shadows
I need a place to comfortably rest

“Hug me, lean on my shoulder
Have strong trust in me”, you know that saying?
I know even though you don’t say it
That is very touching but
Please tell me even if you know

I listened to this song during my birthday and fell for it. It holds many memories. His voice and the lyrics made it turn like a virtual hug.

Lonely HERE (Ft Taeyeon)

Baby I’m so lonely so lonely
I feel like I’m alone
I don’t want to make it obvious to you
I’m used to just holding it in
Understand me

This is a song about a lonely love, but … now I cry at “I am used to just holding it in”. Also, I always thought he had a genius voice. You can put him with anyone and he will not only sound angelic but make the one singing with him seem even more appealing. A voice that does not compete but marries any voice and makes it shine gloriously.

I’m Sorry HERE

Look at us in our memories for a moment
You and me, the two of us inside good memories
We’re laughing, we’re crying
We’ve shared so many moments together

What kind of memories are you left with?
Was I really that indifferent towards you?
I want to ask you, I want to know
Am I really the only one left with good memories?

It feels like I’m always alone
The stories you told me
I thought you were just whining
I thought you always felt the same as I do
Walking the same road as you, feeling the same way as you
Inside my delusion, inside my head, you looked happy

I was bad, I was awful
With my selfish ways until the end
I was awful, you’re still struggling
A happy memory only to me until the end

Don’t go, don’t leave
To you in my forgotten memories
Don’t go, please don’t leave me
You know I’ll collapse like this

You’re still struggling, I’m so awful
Sorry, I’m so sorry
You’re struggling a lot, am I the only one okay?
I’ll still apologize irresponsibly

I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m fine now, I’m sorry
I’m sorry, I’m really sorry, I am sorry, I’m sorry

This is the song that expressed my feelings towards him tonight. When behind his smile he struggled and only now I realize his songs that I thought were a happy memory to me, some of them were a lonely cry that I didn’t hear.

Diphylleia Grayi HERE (Skeleton Flower:  It turns transparent when it gets wet and dries white)

You’re a flower that becomes
transparent as you get wet
Our relationship, the white petal
becomes damp because of our remorse
Although, you’re transparent, you don’t disappear
When I can’t see you, I thought you aren’t even hurting
So what you couldn’t hold onto even though you knew
Actually hurts like being ripped apart, like dying
Because I’m drenched in tears
That blatant fault of mine can’t be seen now

This is one of the songs I consider a masterpiece. “When I can’t see you, I thought you aren’t even hurting … ”. Drenched in tears of his farewell I never thought a song I listened to because I found it simply stunningly pleasing will turn into a song that will hit me hard and will be Jonghyun giving me a life lesson even after he left.

Even if the meaning of the lyrics changed for me, even if now his voice who used to be a soothing melody in the air feels like a beautiful sharp truth I didn’t know at this moment … I am sure that he will still be one of those artists whose songs I will play and love for a lifetime. His words, his existence, his actions were all encouraging. Even his last words on Instagram were ‘I pray you aren’t hurting’. How can we not be hurt when we lost you? And we should be the ones praying for you …

Today the world lost a kind soul and inspiring man. December 18 will never be just another day. Again my condolences to his family, members, fans, and people who are just sad over this sudden goodbye.

May he find peace where he is now. RIP angel.

JIMIN: I think I’m the type that wouldn’t call a long time but I would call often.
JUNGKOOK: I don’t make calls! Sometimes when I think I have been talking for 30 minutes but it has only been 1 minute. I was so surprised.

V: Rap Monster hyung unexpectedly is the lively type.
SUGA: Unexpectedly I’m not noisy.
JIN: That’s not unexpected at all! (laughs)
J-HOPE: I think I would change depending on the situation.
JIMIN: The reasons for #1 V are “because he’s like a child”, “if V goes to play on his own, you probably won’t even know where he ran off to.”
RAP MONSTER: That’s right, but Jungkook would go missing if he secretly goes off by himself.

JUNGKOOK: Yes! That’s right.
J-HOPE: For #2 Suga, “Suga has the image that he doesn’t react to scary things.”
SUGA: If it’s for filming, I can jump otherwise I wouldn’t. It’s the occupational disease. (laughs)

RAP MONSTER: The silly one (boke) is Hobi and the straight man in comedy (tsukkomi) is Suga hyung.
J-HOPE: Don’t be like that!
ALL: (laughs)
V: Jungkook is #7 so unexpected. Isn’t he funny in Japan?
JUNGKOOK: No, my image in Japan is handsome/ cool.

J-HOPE: V stop talking about other people (laughs), someone wrote “it seems that V would crawl back to sleep (or have unprotected sleep) 4 times.” This is so on point.
V: Yeah! If I wake up, I’ll fall back to sleep (laughs)

noddytheornithopod  asked:

A lot of people seem genuinely hurt by the Rose Diamond reveal, like I've seen so many people react in ways that go from angry to heartbroken in a way that indicates many people are really taking this to heart. I think we're supposed to react like we've been betrayed, but it's still amazing how much people really take it to heart. I just wonder, do you know anything to say that could help these people feel better?

i have written about this time and again. i think it’s by far the best thing that could have happened. it gives pink diamond real agency - a real ARC - rather than being shelved off as a tragic death or randomly bubbled.

if she’d really been shattered, that could have been a really shallow tragedy. she was young, she was naive, and she’d never been allowed to grow from that. she’d just be the background noise for *other* characters trauma, rather than allowed her own personhood and growth.

if she’d been bubbled, it could have been a cheap reset button where the tragedy didn’t matter. as soon as she’s unbubbled, she’d be exactly who she was 5000 years ago - just a diamond, who hasn’t learned a damn thing, and the other diamonds’ mourning would be null and void.

this avoids both of those problems effortlessly. rose is still gone. she rejected her family. this is still unbearably painful for both the diamonds and the crystal gems. but it’s not cheap - we KNOW pink diamond. we UNDERSTAND her. and she was allowed to grow. she was allowed to start anew, doing the best she could with the background and perspective she had. she made mistakes in her quest for freedom, but she was driven. her goal was always, always out of love. that’s a great character - good intentions, but ultimately flawed in a way that makes SENSE. this lets us reexamine her while still fundamentally knowing who she is.

pink was given the power she always wanted: the ability to grow up.

also, no offense but… i’ve wanted this for literal years. a lot of the people who are upset, are people i have never agreed with. on anything, regarding SU. if they’re upset by this, maybe they need to evolve their perceptions of the characters. maybe they should have thought outside their theories. i did - like i said back then, i’ll be okay with another solution… as long as it’s not cheapening what we already have. you can’t get so attached you’re not open to anything else - that’s no way to watch ANY show.

it’s not “who shattered pink” that matters. it’s how it impacts the CHARACTERS, including pink herself. this was a wonderful way to give her a real character arc. learning to love, and maybe even forgiving herself.

i’ve also followed rose’s character closely, for a long time. i always hoped this was the case. i’ve said this before, but rose being “born good” would have been… really uncomfortable, to me. like. when what you’re opposing is a system where people are literally born into their roles, it’s not a very encouraging message to say that the leader of the rebellion was just born knowing what’s right from wrong.

it’s about learning. it’s - at it’s very core - a “coming of age” story.

i’ve done my absolute damnest to convince people why i want this to happen, and gotten plenty of insults and eyerolls thrown my way. i’m not sure what else i can do. if your version of pink diamond was just a villain, then i’m glad that illusion got shattered. if your version of rose quartz was a hero, i’m glad that perception shattered, too. i won’t pretend i’m not happy about this. i am.

I don’t think I’ll write a review of this movie (I might eventually) so here’s just a brief list of the things I really appreciated in the new Beauty and The Beast (2017):

  • They allowed Belle to straight-up reject Gaston. They didn’t write her lines or her delivery as coquettish and overly polite. Belle gets to pretty much say, Gaston, I am not interested in you and you need to accept that. They did not portray this as her being shy or hard to get. Her rejection towards him was confident and clear.
  • Kevin Kline was an immaculate choice for Maurice (Belle’s father). He infused even his first appearance with such sincere emotion. Watson and Kline had a remarkably believable, familial chemistry on screen.
  • The costuming was much better than I expected. It had a surprisingly authentic spin on the original cartoonish costumes. They clearly studied the fashion of 1600′s France and attempted to stick closely to its style for this and it worked out very well!
  • The supporting cast forces white people to be reminded that Black People Are Not Some Kind of Recent Invention. People of colour lived throughout Europe in the 1600s. There are interracial couples and characters of colour at the forefront who weren’t used for stereotypical ends. The librarian that Belle visits at the very beginning was a black man and that was sort of the starting point for me where I was like, they took historical accuracy in more than just the costumes and they didn’t whitewash for the sake of/with the excuse of “it’s fantasy”/”its europe”/”it’s the victorian era”
  • They make a joke about a main character being illiterate in a way that isn’t rude, was actually funny, and again a historical nod to the fact that many would have been illiterate in that time period.
  • The Beast is not a petulant man-child who is changed by a Good Woman. His character is further fleshed out in a way that put me at ease about how the original tale is really Stockholm Syndrome dependent. A lot of questionable morals that can be gleaned from the original Beauty and The Beast dissolved under the weight of added context, better character dialogue, better pacing, etc.
  • The Beast gets a solo song and it’s GREAT???
  • Really well written dialogue and soundtrack all around. The majority of dialogue was much more witty than I had ever expected. Le Fou (Gaston’s hype man) had some lines that fell flat for me but he was the comedic relief character anyway, and enough of those made the audience laugh, and weren’t tacky jokes.
  • Yes, it’s implied that Le Fou is gay as you may have heard, but 1. only later in the film once we’ve gotten to know and like him, and 2. its NOT used as a joke. For the most of the film we see an interesting and nuanced dynamic between him and Gaston that gives a lot more life and likability to the character. The audience is only really invited to think about Le Fou’s sexuality once its appropriate, not when it can be used against him (and only very briefly, and once again and most importantly not as a form of humor). Le Fou is Comedic Relief but not Comedic Gayness.
  • Gaston’s character was given so much more strength and complexity and it made for a VERY NUANCED AND ENTICING villain. He’s given more background, and that background helps contextualize his desires and his tragic flaws way better. He’s no longer just a man lusting after a woman and jealous of her furry boyfriend, he is a man who unwittingly chases the thrill of conquest to his own demise.
  • Sir Ian McKellen was the clock guys HE WAS THE CLOCK MAGNETO WAS THE CLOCK

B can you give us your top 10 anime you watched this year? I'm rlly curious! Thank you :3

Oh my my, this is the hardest thing to do…but let’s try! Let’s go from 10 to 1 this time, for the dramatics of it!

TOP 10 ANIME I WATCHED IN 2017

10. Ouran High School Host Club

I enjoyed it very very much and it’s probably the most EXTRA thing I’ve ever watched. I loved all the characters, the twins especially, and how surprisingly deep and diverse their characterization was! A true classic.

A very very late discovery that managed to get on this list at the last minute. This is not a perfect story with perfect characters (which I personally ADORE), but it managed to get me hooked from the start and left me wanting to know more and more. I’m in love with this very dark universe, but you know it’s easy to win me over with vampires ;)

Despite being the protagonist of the Top 10 Anime Betrayals when I said I’m not that fond of BNHA now, I can’t forget how hyped I used to be when I first watched the anime and read the manga. It’s a story that has a lot of my favorite characters, like Todoroki and Kirishima, and I find its plot incredibly well written. I may have grown distant with time, but it’s always in my heart.

Barakamon was my first slice of life anime ever and it made me fall in love with this particular genre. It’s…just so good, so funny and so touching one may call it a perfect anime, and probably it truly is.

Well, you all know how much I adored this anime and I still do. It spoke to me on so many levels, it made my heart explode with every possible feeling. It’s a story that felt so painfully real to me and it taught me so much, from the importance of appreciating the things you have to accept that, sometimes, to move forward you just have to go back. It’s a true hidden gem everyone should watch at least once, especially if you are in your late twenties or older…you’ll see why ;)

Once I read that sometimes disgrace attacks a single person with the same force that it’s usually reserved for an entire country and this basically sums Tokyo Ghul up. I live in a state of constant fear when it comes to my ghoul kids and my most beloved Ken kaneki, but I’m still looking forward to what season 3 will bring us (i.e. to far more pain).

Speaking of pain, here’s another great source of it. It’s a story that I literally devoured, both in anime and in manga form. It means so much to me that it’s even hard to find words to describe how much I love it. Let’s just say it has it all: vampires, mysteries, questionable characters that you end up loving regardless, ANGST, tears, friendships, an older character adopting a bunch of teens and, let’s say it, tons of gay. Beautiful.

The one with Balck Butler is the longest journey I’ve embarked myself this year. I’m usually scared to start series that have been going on for so long, but it was totally worth it, even just for the magnificence that was Book of Circus or Book of the Atlantic. Also, I always wondered why people were always head over heels for Sebastian and well…now I know, and I am one of them (and this is how my Ono Daisuke worship started, rip).

You all know my troubled history with Noragami. It was an anime that I didn’t like at all at first but, watching it again after a 6 months break, I ended up loving with all myself. Yato is honestly one of the most fascinating (and attractive) characters I’ve ever met and all the rest of the cast is just as well developed and layered. Also, it’s the anime that made me fall for Kamiya Hiroshi’s voice once and for all.

Atreus is literally my most favourite video game companion because he is super useful, he’s strong and he’s actually a big part of the story.

He’s a softie and super lovable, not to mention he’s really helpful during battles. He shouts “Watch out, Father!” “Behind you!” “Fire incoming!” “Father, you’re hurt!” “Are you alright, Father?” “Here! A healing stone!”

I’ve never been so thankful and I honestly love having him around that I don’t even fight sometimes, I just let him handle the enemies with his arrows on his own (with my command of course) and I just go “Well done, my son.” Did I mention he summons animals with his damn arrows to kill?

He has his own set of battle skills that you get to upgrade which are pretty cool, he knows the languages, he helps you with the puzzles and keeps a journal of everything. And don’t get me started on his drawings in his journal of the creatures they encounter. He even writes tips for you! lmao

He’s a fearless kid and you don’t even have to worry about him dying or whatsoever which is fantastic because he can choke anything like a friggin badass that he is since he can handle himself without any help.

I’ve seriously lost count how many times I’ve said “I love you, boy.”

He’s so great and so well-written. Plus, he loves boat stories and he does get excited when Mimir or his Dad tells good stories. No wonder Kratos loves him so much.

Things to Know About Living with Draco Malfoy - A List by Harry Potter

  1. Draco loves praise. Not false praise or meaningless adoration, but real things. Let him know he looks good in the mornings, remind him that you appreciate when he puts all your clothes away in the wardrobe, and always let him know he is appreciated.
  2. Don’t give him tea in your Gryffindor mug. Ever. Even if all the other cups are dirty.
  3. Always have chocolate hidden in the back of the cupboard. No matter what Draco claims, chocolate is always an appropriate solution to problems that cannot be solved.
  4. Understand that no matter how many times Draco claims he is not sentimental that he is lying. Keep leaving him small notes in his pockets, or written on the mirror in the bathroom, or owled to him when you're away on a mission. He will claim you’re ridiculous and sappy and he is indulging you. Let him think you don’t know he keeps every single note hidden in a box under the bed charmed to look like potion ingredients.
  5. Put yourself out there. Draco is social. He likes to mingle with his friends and attend balls. He likes to be a part of the world, but he wants you to be a part of his world. Any lingering anxiety about that many people is always worth the possessive way his arm wraps around your waist and the words I Love You he whispers in your ear.
  6. When you can’t find your favorite jumper always check Draco’s wardrobe. It did not get there by accident.
  7. Learn to understand his communication style. When his anger is loud it means he needs you to help reel him back in, to calm him down. When his anger is quiet try not to take it personally. It’s not about you. Give him space and remember he will talk to you when he is ready.
  8. He chose you. He doesn’t need for your life to be easy, he just wants you. It’s okay to argue about small things. It doesn’t mean he will leave.
  9. Don’t run out of tea. Ever. Ever. You will never live it down. DO NOT RUN OUT OF TEA.
  10. Draco likes to be taken care of but is also incredibly independent. He doesn’t want you to fix everything or solve all his problems, but it’s okay to fix him dinner and let him know you need him. It’ll be hard to find the balance but it will be worth it.
  11. Always kiss him goodnight.

21 Recommended Books for Writers

As I’ve talked about on my blog several times, an important part of growing as a writer is learning about writing. For years I’ve wanted to compile a list of writing books I’ve read, liked, and recommend. Today I’m happy to say I now have that list to add to my blog (perfect timing for anyone who likes summer reading). I’m sure over time, this list will be added to.

Many writers I’ve talked to have read quite a few of these books. How many have you read? And is there one I need to look into? (You can comment at the bottom).

If you haven’t read any of them, cool. Now you have a list to chose from should you ever want to.

Hundreds of books have been written on the art of writing. Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories.

In this completely revised and updated second edition, Renni Browne and Dave King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own work. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, point of view, interior monologue, and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited.

What makes a good story or a screenplay great?

The vast majority of writers begin the storytelling process with only a partial understanding where to begin. Some labor their entire lives without ever learning that successful stories are as dependent upon good engineering as they are artistry. But the truth is, unless you are master of the form, function and criteria of successful storytelling, sitting down and pounding out a first draft without planning is an ineffective way to begin.

Story Engineering starts with the criteria and the architecture of storytelling, the engineering and design of a story–and uses it as the basis for narrative. The greatest potential of any story is found in the way six specific aspects of storytelling combine and empower each other on the page. When rendered artfully, they become a sum in excess of their parts.

Hi! Could you please do a no. 10 for SuperCat? Thanks and happy new year!

(The happy new year just showcases that it’s been 84 years since I last posted anything but I thought I’d try seeing if I could still make the words do the Thing I am sorry this took so long).

10. “I just want this.”

& bonus 19. “Come home with me.”

It starts with a messy kiss on Cat’s balcony, as Supergirl tells her goodbye and wishes her luck on her latest adventure.

They’re stood close together, arms pressed against one another as they both gaze out at the city, and Cat can’t help but revel in being so close to the woman that has come to mean so much to her over the past few months.

Kara might think that Cat is only interested in the Supergirl side of her, but that is far from the truth – and Cat would tell her so, if only Kara would tell her the truth. But her final fishing attempt had been brushed off with a soft smile and an amused laugh, and Cat isn’t going to push it any further.

If Kara wants to keep up the charade, then so be it.

Dear straight women

@straight women who want to talk to me about how ‘cute’ and ‘adorable’ they find gay men, and how they just ‘love’ gay relationships and yaoi or whatever:

Don’t be surprised if I have literally zero patience with you whatsoever, and tell you to get lost.

Seriously, this gets old very, very, very quickly. It’s happened far too many times before. It wasn’t cute the first time, and it’s not cute now. It wasn’t okay the first time, and it’s not okay now.

You don’t understand how many times I have been with my best friend, who is a straight man, and some straight woman has said to us (knowing that I am gay), “Aww cute! You two should make out!” Thankfully, he’s not an asshole, so this doesn’t bother him.

But it bothers me, very much so. I have lost friends before because they thought that I had a crush on them, and never bothered to ask me about it. I haven’t spoken to somebody I used to be best friends with for almost three years because of it. So this is a sore spot for me.

When you say things like that, I get an overwhelming need to shuffle away from my best friend. I am a very tactile person, and you make me consciously evaluate every touch, every hug, every bit of physical contact I have with him. Although thankfully, it doesn’t make him uncomfortable with me - he is one of the rare ones.

But the problem goes much deeper. How many times have gay men been outed because some straight woman has taken a photo of them making out in a gay club? Too many times. It happened to a friend of mine last week. How many millions of words of fanfic or slash or whatever exist that portray gay relationships as a constant sex-fest, written by - you guessed it - straight women? There’s probably one being written right now.

When you fetishise our relationships, what you are telling us is that you only care about our relationships for your own gratification. When you write fiction that’s constantly steamy and sexual, you are telling us that you think that sex is the vast majority of our relationships. When you take pictures of us kissing and post them publicly on Facebook, you are not only telling us that, to you, our relationships our yours to intrude on, but you’re being extremely creepy and putting us in danger as well.

So no, I’m not going to sit there and listen to you gush about how much you ‘love’ gay men.

If you really love us, maybe you should actually help us fight the homophobia we face, rather than thinking that your obsession with us and your fetishisation of us is somehow revolutionary.

CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THE REACTION THEY HAD SEEING EACH OTHER AGAIN? AAAAAAAAAA
How can people have the courage to say that in One Piece the relationships between the Mugiwaras are bad written? I think Oda doesn’t want to write too much about what they constantly feel for each other because his manga is about adventure, not about accurately describing human interactions. They might not say how much they love each other, but they show it throughout their actions all the time. Also, I believe One Piece gives us some of the best examples of friendship we could have in a manga, because we witness the birth of so many unlikely ones throughout the chapters to this day that are not only about being crew mates: friendship between non-blood brothers, between rivals, between pirates and marines, between different races, between people just met along a journey.

So, yeah, this might not be the manga in which characters have big talks about how they feel or how much they missed each other, but definitely a great manga about adventure and chasing dreams in which friendship is a huge theme beautifully written.

This was a good idea gone bad. Like, really bad. Ship It by Britta Lundin is written as a serious twist on the film industry and what can and can’t be done to a show by the relationship of fans and those who help make the show happen. Something that several fandoms need to learn (you know who you are).

However, this is read as an embarrassing take on the concept of fandom and shipping with a character who is entitled and doesn’t at all get any consequences for her actions. At all. Guys, she hacks someone’s Twitter account and threatens to post things on there without his consent unless he makes her ship in his show canon. She betrays two people’s basic human trust after they talk to her about things that make them uncomfortable in confidence, and she still doesn’t get into trouble.

And yet somehow, I am supposed to be relating to this character or cheering for her by the end of it?

Well, let’s take a look.

Ship It starts with Claire, one of our protagonists, going to a panel for her favorite show Demon Heart and asking the panel about her ship of the two main character who are men and obviously should be shipped together. The other protagonist, Forest, does not think that they should be or that his character is gay - something that many real life actors and actresses are forced to address in show business. This dismissal of Claire’s question causes her to run from the panel in tears and fling herself onto her hotel bed to cry. I am not kidding.

What follows is a story about Claire being taken along on the convention tour so try and do damage control. Along the way, her goal is to talk to the writer of the show to try and convince him to make her ship canon, and she gets to know Forest, his co-star who plays the character she ships him with, and a fellow fan of the show, POC pansexual Tess who she is totally not gay for - right?

When I first read the blurb, the set up for the story felt like every 2012 fan fiction that began with someone’s drunk/abusive mother waking the narrator up and telling them that they have to pack because they have just been sold to a band. But then I read about Tess’s involvement in the story and how her being there causes Claire to question  her sexuality, something that many teens can relate to. I took a breath and grabbed the book, praying that it was at least well written.

Man, oh man, was I wrong.

The entire time I was reading this, I wanted to punch Claire in the face. She represents everything that is wrong with fans who go to extremes for shipping. Granted, her opposite narrator, Forest, can be a bit of an asshole when dodging fans asking about his character’s sexuality, but he does eventually open up to Claire about his life and his own fears for his acting career. That being that his father is sorta thinking this acting thing is a phase and that Forest is scared to give up and become a nobody from a small town in Oklahoma.

Claire is surprised to learn this about forest and she does the most rational thing ever; she turns around and writes RPF about Forest, revealing this new found knowledge by turning his father into an abusive asshole who scarred Forest’s back and a sex scene between him and his co-star. Because, what else are you supposed to do?

Later, she organizes a fan strike from her tumblr to not ask any questions at another panel until the runners for the show agree to start talking about her ship and possibly make it canon. However, Forest gets understandably frustrated and shuts the protest down by calling out the shippers. Claire counts it as a victory when the fans get upset at Forest and thinks that by banning together, she - er, I mean, the fans - may get what they want… even though Forest’s career, as well as the crew and cast, are no doubt under scrutiny now.

However, remember I mentioned a girl named Tess earlier? Tess is actually one of my favorite characters in the book, and personally, I would have enjoyed a book about her instead of Claire. Tess is a curvy black girl who is pansexual and a fan of the show, but she struggles with being an ‘outed’ fan because of how society treats fans and fandom - a good topic to bring up, but the book brushes over it.

Tess points out to Claire that life and fitting in is hard enough for her with her race and sexuality being used against her and she doesn’t want to out herself as a fangirl as well because it would ruin what friendships and relationships she has with people.

This actually causes an argument between the girls, with Tess telling Claire that maybe she should stop trying to push her ship onto the show runners because ultimately, this could hurt the show more than help it. Claire tries to reason that this will help the LGBTQ community and Tess actually gives my favorite quote of the entire novel:

“’I stopped caring what the show runner thinks because a character can be anything in fic. They can be black or queer or fat or whatever the fuck I want and I don’t need anyone’s permission. So just ship what you want to ship and stop caring so much about what Jamie and Forest think!’

‘But they’re wrong,’ I kind of yell. ‘And someone has to tell them that. Why don’t you see that? The world would be a better place if there were more queer characters, more black characters, more of everything that’s not the same old same old.’

‘But you’re not pushing for more black characters, are you? You only care about one thing.’

‘That’s not true.’

‘Of course it is! You know how many black characters have been on Demon Heart? Like two, and they were both demons. Now they’re dead. You’ve never mentioned it. You only care about the thing that affects you.’

‘I do care about that. But look, we can still make SmokeHeart queer, but we can’t turn them black. That’s not how it works.’” (238, if you wanna see).

This is actually a good point that is brought up in the book and for one moment, I actually thought something smart was going to come out of the resolution of this book. Tess points out that fans usually freak out over the sexuality of the characters, but right now in media, people aren’t harassing show runners to make POC characters. Claire refuses to acknowledge this, and basically just says it’s more important to make characters gay than it is to push for ALL forms of diversity that there should be in media.

Tess even goes on to admit that Claire isn’t being honest with herself and works it in that Claire is denying her own sexuality as being bisexual/queer (the book never specifies and somehow tries to make this a big deal in the plot) and Claira brushes her off.

After this, the two are tense and Tess tells her that her friends are coming, the ones who don’t know about her being a fangirl.

Claire takes this knowledge, still upset and thinking that Tess is in the wrong for telling her to give up on harassing the Demon Heart crew, and outs Tess as a fangirl in front of all her friends when they are out for sushi, after which her friends are confused and look to Tess a little oddly. Claire even goes as far as trying to play the victim when she leaves, to leave Tess to clean up her mess.

And somehow, I am supposed to be wanting Claire and Tess to be together by the end of this book when Claire chooses a ship over POC representation and then outs her about a secret Tess has every right to keep to her friends?

You know, I’m really not sure.

Claire then hacks the Twitter account of one of the show runners for Demon Heart and basically blackmails him into getting her ship canon but he makes a good point - he doesn’t have that say in the end. It’s the studio who want to appeal to a wide audience, it’s the actors who want their characters to say certain things, it’s the writers who all want to put in their own story. But Jamie, the show runner, is so twisted in Claire’s narration of him that we are led to believe that he is just a horrible person instead of someone who wants to tell his own story but has to go through an insane amount of walls to even tell a small portion of it. Jamie does admit to queer baiting to get people to continue to watch the show, but Claire still plays the victim when he just walks away from her saying that he’s had enough of her (along with something about suing but I don’t really remember).

The show launches the last episode of it’s first season while they are wrapping up the panel tour and in a big ‘twist reveal’ kill Forest’s character on the show, and Jamie says that he has to put an end to Claire’s ship or they will never stop hearing about it. He fires Forest and says he cannot return for a second season, of which Forest is obviously devastated for as his biggest fear of becoming a nobody in the acting world may happen.

Forest, in that fit of anger, goes on Twitter and thanks the fans for their support in his role, but explains he won’t be coming back. He then tweets again, saying to blame Claire. She gets angry over this and goes to confront him, and he tells her that Jamie fired him so that she would stop her pursuit of the ship in the show - and then confronts her about writing RPF of him and his costar having sex in his trailer and twisting everything he told her in confidence to make his dad seem abusive. Claire tries to defend herself, and Forest yells that he isn’t gay. This leads to one of the most frustrating exchanges of dialogue.

Claire insists that Forest is just being homophobic.

Forest says that he isn’t, he’s just straight and she had no right to write that about him.

Claire gets frustrated and yells (and this is actually what she says) “They’re just dicks, you dick!”

Cue me wanting to rip up a book for the first time ever.

From there, things happen and it’s the low for the characters, and so on and so on and they all finally get to talk and make up for their anger. Somehow, Claire’s sexuality is still a big deal and she outs herself to the world at a final Demon Heart panel as queer (again, how is this relevant to the plot?!) and this gives Forest the courage to stand up and make a really big queer bait of him encouraging the shippers and then kissing his co star on stage.

Of which in the next chapter is revealed to be a lie and the two brush it off and say if they see another shipper it will be too soon and it is revealed that Forest is seeing one of the women who works in the PR for the show.

Wait what?!

I read all of that for Claire not to actually learn anything from her actions, be entitled and pouty and enabled by terrible characters all throughout the book only for her big moment to be outing herself as queer - when that wasn’t even a good plot thread to the book over all?! The hell!

Ship It is pandering to every fan fiction reader who wants to live out Claire’s chance of making their ship real and not being able to separate shipping from reality.

This author wrote a character who enjoys fandom without realizing what fandom actually is - it’s a space for fans to come together to share how they all interpret this amazing media that they have banded around. In fandom, you can ship what you wanna ship, and you can certainly have power over race and design and so on.

But there comes a line between fan fiction and canon media - and then another between those and reality. Claire is a fan who dangerously mixes all three together and never once gets punished for it. The story we are supposed to focus on, somehow, is Claire struggling with her sexual identity, something that comes up at the weirdest times and is a completely confusing plot point to the entire story with the way that this all came about. If you wanted a story about a girl questioning her sexuality, give her more scenes with Tess that don’t point to a delusional, toxic relationship and maybe, just maybe, don’t have a show panel as your setting for the supposed love story to bloom.

Do not waste your time with this book; I still don’t understand how someone was able to publish this completely. I don’t understand how this got through dozens of people and not one of them said that maybe they should look this over again and try to reorganize everything.

But hey, maybe a book about the evils of queer baiting is a little bit of a queer bait itself.

Baby’s First Christmas

Author’s Note: The fluffiest shit I have ever written. Shout out to SOA for giving me the name Abel which I adore…Takes place a couple years after high school graduation.

Feedback appreciated! Requests open!

Billy and I  sat on the floor in front of the Christmas tree, wrapping the far far far too many presents we had brought for Abel. I tried to justify how many we purchased by buying mostly books, classics that I read as a kid. Billy, on the other hand, picked out mostly toys, bearing no shame for spoiling his son rotten.

He and I got married after we found out I was pregnant. That was far too taboo for his family though, and they shut us both out. Not that we wanted them involved with our son anyway. Max came around when she thought she could get away with it unnoticed, which, sadly, wasn’t often. She had mailed us gifts to give to Abel, in case she couldn’t make it around for the holidays. As she was still underage, she couldn’t get away like Billy had.

Fuck me like the poet that I am. Write each letter of the alphabet with your tongue below my belly, like I need to be reminded of the origin of all things written; of all things beautiful, and slap me when I fail my spelling test, forgetting how many “R’s” are in “Embarrass,” and shove that word down my throat so I do better next time, and let me transfer stories through the touching of our tongues; taste my fucking words, so you don’t have to open your eyes and realize you’re making sour love to the devil, and pull the metaphors out from inside my head (my hair is the only thing keeping them there), and tell me I’m the only writer left in the world, and choke me so I can sympathize with all the other poets that you buried alive.
