how to completely disappear and never be found

my hobbies include thinking about how Elizabeth Short’s brutal 1947 dismemberment and murder has to be related to the disappearance of actress Jean Spangler in 1949 and trying to tie these 2 cases together… they’re both from LA, they both looked similar and were beautiful with dark hair and blue eyes and they both wanted to be actresses and were stalked by creepo dudes. Short’s killer was never found but her bisected corpse was infamously dumped in a South LA neighborhood while Spangler disappeared completely could it be the same guy who was never caught or am I just reaching I need answers pls

  • There are mountains in every direction and the snow never quite melts completely from the tops. No matter how long you drive, they never get any closer, but sometimes when you look out your window at night they appear close enough to touch.
  • People disappear into the woods often. The reporters on the news assure that there are search parties being put together. No one is ever found.
  • The rocks are bright orange and yellow and red and the sun shines blindingly off the canyon walls. Shadows pass across your blurry vision but you’re sure it’s just a lizard.
  • Hoodoos and arches balance precariously and you hear Native American stories about the souls trapped in them. The wind has carved faces into the rock as it screams through the canyon.
  • There are hundreds of little towns in the stretch from city to city that appear out of nowhere. Where there once was miles upon miles of dry yellow grass, now there are little houses huddled together. There never seem to be any people.
  • Gunshots are frequent during hunting season. They are easy to ignore. So is the freshly turned earth in the forest.
  • It’s hard to remember where the protected government land begins and ends. When a man in a ranger uniform tells you you’re trespassing, you believe him, though you’re sure there isn’t a National Park around.
  • Seagulls circle overhead and watch from rooftops. There is no water for miles. Everyone says they came to save the crops from crickets and never left. They keep you awake at night.
  • Broken down barns litter the fields and mountain passes. People think they’re from the pioneers, but no one’s ever gotten close enough to check.

Elisha’s story, because sometimes I can’t get people out of my mind once I’ve invented them.

Oh, and @flying-guinea-pig, you had some interesting tags on my last post with her in it. If you’re still interested after this, we need to talk.

On Ao3

While she had been looking for an affordable car for some time, Elisha never expected to find it in her uncle’s garage.

In fact, her uncle’s garage was the kind of place you expected cars to disappear from, not where they randomly showed up. The door was never locked and rarely even properly closed, no matter how many times his family told him something was likely to get stolen. He just had a little too much faith in the world to do right by him. This might be why, when Elisha went out there searching for a toolbox and instead found a completely unfamiliar car, he decided to forego calling the police and simply give it to her.

“I know it’s a little beat up, but you were looking for a cheap car, weren’t you?”

“A little beat up?” Elisha nearly shrieked. “It looks like it’s been through a garbage compactor. Does it even run?”
