Theory: Fukurodani To Win Nationals

alternatively: this is a shounen sports manga so literally anyone could win for any reason whatsoever but a Fukurodani win would not be the worst possible choice and could in fact be an excellent choice

The tricky thing about theorizing who could win nationals is that none of the teams talk about winning nationals. It’s all about the act of going and what they will do there. Past winners aren’t even mentioned. But we’re 234 chapters into this. For the story, for the characters, and for myself as a fan, I want our current teams to get what they want and deserve, but I want them to aspire for more in the future. Or as Coach Nekomata says in ch.96:

[Note: I’m sorry not sorry for this monstrosity of a post. This is by no means a definitive edition. Beware that below the cut is image heavy and full of spoilers.]

fic friday #1: zilch

“Let me get this straight,” said Carolyn, leaning forward in her chair. “You’d be willing to work for me – for no pay?”

Her interviewee looked coolly back at her across the portacabin table. “Yes.”

“You understand that when I say no pay, I mean exactly that? Not a penny. Zilch.” Carolyn paused. “Nada. Niente. I’m afraid I don’t know the German.”

“Nichts,” supplied her companion. “And yes, I understand you perfectly. I don’t want money; I don’t need a job. It would be more like a hobby.”

Carolyn pursed her lips. “I don’t think the passengers would find that very reassuring. How can I be sure you’ll be professional?”

“They’ll never guess I’m anything but an ordinary employee, paid to look after them properly. I can promise you that.”

A quiet settled over the room. In it, opportunity danced a tango with hope: they might not be done for, after all. MJN might actually start making money again.

“We might give it a try,” Carolyn said. “It’s certainly…. Well, there are obvious benefits from my side. I just hope you realise what you’re getting into.” She gazed in mingled disbelief and thrill for a moment, then moved aside her clipboard and leaned both elbows on the table, hands clasped under her chin. “I’ve scheduled a flight to Oslo on Wednesday. You could come along, see how you get along with Douglas - Captain Richardson, that is. And of course there’s Arthur.” She murmured the next words through a wry smile. “Something of a dealbreaker in himself.”

“That sounds perfect.”

Carolyn sat up straight, and offered her hand over the table.

“Well then,” she said. “I bid you a tentative welcome to MJN Air, First Officer Gustava.”

As they shook hands, Theresa smiled. “Thank you, Ms Knapp-Shappey.”

Depression has always been such a wild thing to me. I can be happy as shit and then suddenly it’s like a switch goes off in my head and I dissociate from reality and shut down emotionally. Sometimes it comes out in waves of anger or crying or shit sometimes I don’t have the energy to leave bed and face the world. I could have had a great week or even a few great months but depression really runs on its own schedule and comes by whenever it feels like it. You don’t want to get up, waking up from your sleep is hard, seeing the sun shine is hard, depression sucks sometimes man and for some people it’s not something you can just make “stop.” Thank goodness my coping methods are much healthier and I know how to deal with it appropriately .

The mountain is a mother
cradles you in arms of stone
keeping you safe
keeping you sane
a haven, a home, a temple.

The mountain is a father
protects you with its tumbling wrath
puts fire in your blood
and courage in your heart
a fortress, a kingdom, a city.

The mountain is both parent and child
bids you welcome when you return
stifles your screams
soothes your fears
a lullaby, a hearth, a tomb.

But he, he is the one you truly need -
wraps you in his loving arms
stills the tears
quiets the trembling
a lover, a friend, your One.

I'm only on day two of keto and it's a lot for me lol. I chose it because carbs are my absolute favorite. I wanted to cut down on my carb intake but I'm really not a big meat eater. But it did help me with my fear of butter. I'm gonna see how my week goes and wonder if I'll stick with it. I miss spaghetti squash, bananas, and sweet potatoes already I'm kind of embarrassed.

Spaghetti squash is not that high in carbs, and you can totally have one a week! Just work it in. You shouldn’t deprive yourself. Low carb is good but super low carb is really hard. Try to lower your carbs gradually instead of all at once.

The remaining five weeks on surgery consisted of 3 weeks on the colorectal service and 2 weeks on thoracics. In rough order, these were the cases I scrubbed in on:

  • ex-lap sigmoidectomy w/ end colostomy
  • robot-assisted laparoscopic low anterior resection (LAR) w/ diverting loop ostomy, later converted to open, w/ bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy (BSO)
  • robot-assisted laparoscopic sigmoid resection and repair of colovesicular fistula (secondary to, or 2/2 diverticular disease)
  • venous port placement
  • open right partial colectomy (2/2 3 cm colonic mass)
  • open total procto-colectomy with left ureteral stent placement and right ureteral reimplantation via psoas hitch (the 12 hour nightmare operation that shook me to my senses regarding surgery)
  • transanal hemorrhoid dearterialization
  • ileostomy revision
  • lap total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis
  • lap partial colectomy
  • lap sigmoidectomy
  • lap total procto-colectomy w/ ileostomy
  • robot-assisted lap transanal excision of rectal polyp, converted to LAR
  • ileostomy re-siting 2/2 parastomal hernia
  • diagnostic lap, omental biopsy
  • open total abdominal colectomy, LAR w/ ileorectal anastomosis
  • ex-lap and loop ileostomy take-down (got to put in a purse-string cerclage to close on this one)
  • a smattering of out-patient cases for hemorrhoids, fistulas, etc.
  • flexible and rigid bronchoscopy (this was just a routine case to resect a bronchial mass that ended up being converted to a right thoracotomy and was the first time I saw a chest tube put in, the pt was desatting rapidly, we got an x-ray that showed a hemothorax, and after the CT was placed, over a liter of blood came pouring out immediately, we fixed the bleed, and all was well again, but gosh super high adrenaline and unexpected –and thus I started my thoracics service)
  • left VATS with left diaphragm plication (someone damaged his phrenic nerve during a…CABG?)
  • right VATS, pleural biopsy, pleurodesis
  • left VATS and left upper lobectomy
  • EGD and esophageal stent replacement (2/2 gunshot wound)
  • bronch, mediastinoscopy, and left thoracotomy with left upper lobectomy
  • left VATS, blebectomy, pleurodesis (mechanical and chemical; I was scraping the inside of this young teen’s chest wall with a bovie sponge until it bled so the blood and talc powder we added could help hold her lung up; she was in a lot of pain afterwards)
  • robot-assisted lap paraesophageal hernia repair
  • Nissen fundoplication
  • robot-assisted lap gastrectomy w/ roux-en-y and esophagojejunostomy anastomosis (a surg onc patient who needed the thoracic’s attendings robot OR block time; we were just there incidentally)
  • right VATS, with right upper and lower lobe wedge resection
  • tracheostomy
  • mediastinoscopy
