Internal vs External Magic Users

So, I’ve come to find knowing how magic works for each individual can help immensely when it comes to studying and perfecting each person’s form of witchcraft. Everyone tends to be different, and finding out where you stand and how you personally use, store, and/or release energy can help when it comes to visualization. This can, in turn, greatly impact the success rate of each spell, working, or ritual a witch does. Obviously, it’s not an end-all, be-all. However, I’ve found knowing the information can help even just a tiny bit (or a lot, depending on the person.)

Internal vs External

The way energy moves throughout the body is a great way to start understanding how you can use and manipulate your own in your everyday life as well as in your practice. There are hundreds of different types of paths for energy to go, but for the most part, the two largest categories are: internal and external.


Internal energy pathways are self-explanatory. Typically, these people were born during the day and possess power from within their own bodies. They have a connection with the Sun. Internal is quite common, and these individuals may have to ground and cleanse themselves more than their counterparts. They can be gifted at enchantments, astral work, communing with deity or spirits, etc. Their cores emanate energy, which can be activated with a touch. Touch with the hands, feet, chest, and the top of the head would be ideal as these are their center points of energy. Internal magic users tend to rely on their instincts and intuition and often have extra-sensory abilities. My recommendation: focusing on visualization and using touch-based rituals/spells (sigils, baths, etc.)

Oil to help loosen up the internal energy flow:

  • Olive oil base
  • Sea Salt
  • Amethyst (chips or tumbled)
  • Rosemary (herb or oil form)
  • Yerba Santa, Sage, or Palo Santo

Burn either on a charcoal disk or rub on a candle to breathe it in.


External magic users are the lucky ones! Typically born at night, these are those lucky people who could wish for something and have it happen. They have an ability to influence the world from afar, like the Moon. They can trigger changes around them without thinking about it too much. Simply saying things like “I really wish I had some extra money,” might aid them in finding a spare $20 on the street. These are typically the people who can reblog emoji spells, and/or “money cat”-type posts and have a high success rate. Their bodies radiate energy and manipulating it may come naturally to them, to the point where they have no idea they’re doing it. They rely on their intellect and are disciplined, determined, and intelligent. They excel at area of effect rituals, such as wards. Energy manipulation, healing magic, and forms of divination may also be easier for them to master. My recommendation: learning how to manipulate their energy more and using repetitive mindset spells (ie, vision boards. AKA, wishing for something super hard.)

Oil to help loosen up the external energy flow:

  • Coconut oil
  • Lavender (herb or oil)
  • Sea Salt
  • Mint (herb or oil)
  • Selenite (Charge oil with it or add chips. Disclaimer: selenite dissolves in water, so either charge the oil or use pieces you don’t care for.)

Rub on skin, do NOT consume if you add selenite chips as it is unfit for internal consumption. 

Meditate your ass off

What is meditation basically? Lots of people will tell you that meditation is supposed to calm your mind. 

But what will really meditation do to you is that you’ll be able to CONTROL your mind. Or at least you’ll be better at it, which is something huge, believe me. And controlled mind is a big tool in magic work.

There are 3 basic types of meditation.

1. Just observe your mind. This is something that you can do when you have time. Sit on your couch, lie on your bed - whatever feels good for you - that’s the key. Close your eyes and just try to observe what’s your mind up to. The important thing is - don’t try to think. Just let your mind exist. It almost feels like falling asleep, actually. Once you try it you can feel how freeing that moment is. 

2. Be aware. Yes, awareness of your body and later, of what is happening around you. For example, try to be aware of your breathing. Focus on how you breathe. Just feel how your nostrils feel the air coming in and out. Tap on your forehead with your finger and feel the spot. Be aware of the sensation. Focus on it like nothing else exist. Just the sensation you feel on your skin. 

3. Focus on one thing and one thing only with your mind. As I always say, start with something easy like an orange. Orange is easy to imagine in your mind. Picture its structure. Picture its taste on your tongue. Picture how it feels when you touch it. Basically, put together a picture of everything you know about the orange and keep mind picturing it. Feel the orange for as long as possible. If you lose your concentration, it’s alright and you did nothing wrong - we’re humans, not robots. Just try again :)

Questions you may ask:

Q: What if I don’t have time for meditation? I’m busy with school and work! 

A: Well, of course we live in a world that needs our presence. And number 2 and 3 can be done while you wait for the bus, while you’re stuck in traffic jam, and so on. Don’t lose hope, just because you’re busy :)

Q: Is it really necessary to meditate? 

A: Nothing is necessary, it’s your choice. But the truth is, if you choose to meditate, you’ll be able to control your mind better and it’s not only helpful in magic work. It can help you if you have trouble sleeping and so on. Helps with anxiety, too, btw. 

Q: How does meditation help control mind?

A: Number 1 can teach you: 

- how to be aware of what’s going on in your mind on the level you can’t reach yet. Later, you can use this new entry to your mind and analyze your psyche better. 

- how to not fall asleep when you try astral traveling before going to bed.

- lucid dreaming :)

  Number 2 can teach you:

- how to be aware of what your body wants and needs even though it can’t speak.

- how to be aware of what is happening around you in a crowd - kind of good skill to have these days, sadly.

- how to feel if something paranormal is happening around you.

  Number 3 can teach you:

- how to use your willpower as a tool for your magic work.

- power of good imagination raises IQ and plain common sense. 

Remember that if something isn’t going well for the first time you try, it doesn’t mean it’ll be like this forever. Things can better with practice. So don’t worry. We were all lame shits when we started.

This one is important because most of the time i feel like i see baby/beginner witches try really REALLY hard to “reach the same level” as other witches as quickly as possible when in reality that just hurts THEIR path in the long run. Your path is your own, take it at your own pace. Enjoy the little bumps along the way and find the “Roses of your Path” (the things that make you want to stop and appreciate them: the satisfaction of calling your first Storm, the chill of the night air when you set out your first Full Moon Water, the spark when you find that one crystal.) Enjoy it. Enjoy your path, Enjoy your Craft. 

*Use the Things you Already Own!*

Another thing i see beginners getting hung up on (myself included, i was/am extremely guilty of this lol) is wanting to go out and buy a ton of supplies. try looking around your house for things that can be re purposed. Old Spaghetti Sauce Jars can be cleaned and used as spell jars, deity altars/shrines, or ingredient storage! Take pictures from old magazines and make a collage Altar on paper! Use a composition notebook as your Book Of Shadows! Your old broken glasses case can be used as a case for your portable altar! Dig around and see if there are extra candles you haven’t used in a while! Wash out and save those eggshells from your cooking to use as spell ingredients! It takes some creative thinking but you can reclaim pretty much anything for your craft!

*Look for Bargains!*
For one thing prices can be outrageous for actual craft materials: like Crystals and Gems? Truly truly truly outrageous. So keep your eyes peeled for bargains and deals! Some of the best places to look for things on the cheap would be Dollar Stores, Flea Markets, Thrift Shops, Garage/Estate Sales! Most of the time in those places you can try haggling to get things at a cheaper price (or get more for less.) It really just depends on the place but you can find the most interesting assortments of things! Keep your eyes peeled in your general day to day life as well see if there are sales at your local grocery store for seed packets, seasonal items/holiday items (look for the sales afterwords to really save haha) The internet is a great place to look, i know Ebay has sellers who sell raw crystals/ crystal chunks by the pound. There’s also places to buy spices in bulk too

Being online and part of the witchy community in tumblr means that there are a lot of ideas being shared from people’s paths and their views on how they think magic should be practiced. What works for them might not work for you and vice versa. Only YOU can decide what is best for you and your path. and on that note:

*Figure Out What YOU Want Out of Your Path!*
When you get some time, sit down and write out all the things you want to get from your path and think critically about how you want magic to work in your daily life. Do you want it to be Super Formal or more casual? perhaps a mix of the two?  Test the waters! Try things once and if you don’t like it then you know and can move on to the things that work better for your lifestyle/craft/path!
Some examples from my list that i can think of right now would be:
-Better knowledge of Crystals/ Crystal remedies and their healing properties
-Daily research -aka tumblr-
-Appreciating Nature more (Whenever i go on walks with my dog i try to pick up some litter if/when i see it)

because, before the Egyptian mythology of yugioh was really fleshed out, this is pretty easy to buy. Atem and Seto are adversaries. dragons and wizards are common fixtures in fantasy and often pitted against each other in stories. okay, cool. but then there’s the revelation that monsters, ESPECIALLY those two, are tied to human souls. and it just makes me laugh because I’m like 99.8% certain Mahad and Kisara never ONCE met each other but their souls are apparently ready to throw down on sight, any time of day, no questions asked, because their respective loved ones are engaged in an eternal pissing contest

You really have to feel for the first-year muggle kids who have to piece together how magic actually works. I just overheard some poor kid ask the DAtDA professor if he had to do anything special to refill him “mana bar” after casting a bunch of spells.

Glad he didn’t ask me. I would have probably tried to convince him that he had to find the savepoint hidden somewhere in the castle.

Spring. Taisho Era Japan, 1920. There is a small percentage of the population that is born with mysterious, magical tattoos. When these people find each other, an inexplicable feeling runs down their spine and they somehow know the other person is just like them—especially if the tattoos have a pre-determined affinity to each other.

That is exactly how Kageyama, the young noble, and Hinata, the blacksmith’s son, met.

Let’s talk about the Black Lion’s phasing powers:

Not to be all “Shiro is a Druid who can do magic and is doing magic right in front of us we just don’t realise it” but…

This is what the Black Lion looks like when she phases through solid matter when she’s piloted by Zarkon (which Shiro sees in the BL’s flashbacks in 2x07):

There’s a distinct blur of pinkish light that looks a lot like the Galra/Druid magic that Zarkon gets from Haggar.

Now here’s what the Black Lion looks like phasing through solid matter when Shiro’s in the pilot seat, in the S2 finale:

Little different, right? This time the light is white and sparkly, much more like the Altean magic we see Allura do in the show.

In both these scenes we see Black with her wings out before and after the phasing-through-solid-matter thing happens, so it’s definitely the same process going on. The pinkish light you see when Zarkon does it is similar to the way Black’s cockpit lights up pink when Zarkon tries to take control in the S1 finale:

Compare this to how the cockpit looks when Shiro retrieves and ‘fixes’ the Black Bayard and then docks it with the control panel in the S2 finale:

The light is much whiter and edged with purple (it also looks more of a natural fit to Black’s colour scheme, but I digress)

Now… we don’t know a lot about how quintessence/magic works on the show, but it all seems to be different versions of the same thing. That’s why Sendak can just plug a Galra crystal into the Castle of Lions, turn all the lights pink, and power up the Castle. And it’s why Allura - a sacred, magical Altean who we’ve seen manipulate quintessence/do magic multiple times on the show - can absorb Haggar’s magic. Zarkon even refers to Haggar’s magic as ‘quintessence’ in one of the scenes where she transfers the quintessence to him. So it seems like Altean magic and Dark Druid magic are just two different versions of quintessence (like the Light Side and the Dark Side of the force).

The fact that Zarkon uses Haggar’s pink quintessence to force himself on the Black Lion makes me think he was also using pink quintessence back in the day when he piloted the Black Lion. I don’t know whether Zarkon has a natural affinity for magic or not, but when Haggar transfers quintessence to him he can definitely do something with it.

Which leads me to this: what if the Black Lion’s phasing-power requires magic to work? When we see Zarkon do it in the flashback, the light is pink, because Zarkon is usually infused with pink quintessence and his magic looks pink as a result. But Shiro can manipulate Altean quintessence, and his ‘natural’ magic is the white Altean version, so when he uses his magic to activate Black’s phasing power, the light is white.

And someone’s gonna say “oh but you talked about his arm and how he’s doing magic with it” yeah because Haggar gave him a Galra arm to convert his natural, white quintessence into the corrupted pink Galra version - the same way the Druid in Collection and Extraction turned raw quintessence into the Galra version. That’s what the arm is for - it doesn’t just forcibly activate his magic powers, it also turns his quintessence pink. The result is a sort of hybrid white-pink, Altean-Galra quintessence very similar to what Allura uses against Haggar in the S2 finale.

So yeah. When Shiro activated the Black Lion’s wings and phased through Zarkon - he was doing magic.

In my setting, there are people with fire magic who can heat up metal till it's red hot and basically fry people wearing armor. Would it be believable to have metal armor not have become a thing? Or would people have just found ways to eliminate the fire mages?

It would depend on a few things. How effective is the ability? How common are the mages? What kind of precautions could negate this ability? What else can you do with this?

We’ve talked about how you build armor around the threats you’re most likely to encounter while using it. If this is an extremely common ability, and one that can affect entire groups of enemies at once, then, yes, it would seriously affect the role of metal in combat. Though, it might not mean abandoning metals entirely.

So, let’s pick apart those questions and talk about what the mean for your setting, and your question.

The biggest question is about how well the abilities work. Both the speed of the ability, and its scale will directly affect how the ability needs to be dealt with, if it does at all. If it’s on a large scale, torching an entire army at once, for example, then the casting time (or the speed that the spell heats metal) only matters if it’s long enough to find and kill the caster.

If the scale is small, one or two people, then the biggest threat would (probably) be during combat. In that context, we’re back to kill the mage. This is especially true if the mage needs to be in direct contact to make it work. Even if they can simply zap whomever they see, they’d be limited to an area denial role. That is to say, they could prevent hostile forces from rushing corridors or streets that they’re watching. This also assumes there’s little to no strain on the mage. If casting this is a strenuous action, and they’re limited to a couple of zaps, it’s entirely possible they wouldn’t affect warfare much at all.

If fire mages are exceedingly rare, either because it takes years of dedicated training, because most people simply don’t have the ability, or because mages suffer serious attrition during training, that means even large scale burns won’t affect much.

Think about it this way, if there are five people on your world who can instantly charbroil an enemy army in their own gear, that’s simply a threat to be carefully tracked, and neutralized, before you start a battle.

As you add more (and the abilities become more common) it becomes harder to keep track of enemy mages until you get to the point where it’s functionally impossible to track them individually. Depending on your setting, that number could actually get pretty high before you reach that point.

Also, with larger numbers, the smaller scale versions of the ability would have more of a chance to affect how warfare works. If you’re able to field one or two mages in your average army, and their primary role is as snipers, that’s not going to affect how people fight, for the most part. (Though, it could, seriously, alter how nobles behaved on the battlefield, or even if they’re present at all.) But, if you can field entire squads of pyromantic infantry, then those small, “reach out and torch someone,” abilities become a lot more threatening. At that point, eliminating them before the fight is basically impossible, so your setting would need ways to deal with them in the moment.

The hard part about introducing magic to a setting is establishing its rules. To an extent, you need to build an entire set of metaphyics for why magic works the way it does, before you start getting into specific abilities. In the absence of that, you have a setting where people will (or, should) work to counter the threats they face, and magic becomes the convenient answer for all of life’s problems.

With fantasy, this isn’t automatically a problem, but it is something you need to keep in mind, when you’re building your world. Look for systems to limit how your magic works, and what it can do. Or, be ready for a setting that is very difficult to work with, because the answer can always be, “magic.”

People are creative. When faced with the prospect of being cooked to death by an enemy mage, the immediate solution is to find a way to prevent that, or preemptively return the favor. This could be as simple as booby-trapping your soldiers (or their gear) with spells that will redirect pryomantic magic back at the caster, or enchanting their gear with some kind of thermal negation effect, so when the pyromancers try to flash fry them, all they manage to do is give their foes flaming weapons and armor.

This could also lead to armies making extensive use of divination, allowing them to better track enemy mages. Which in turn would lead to mages looking for ways to create decoys, moving around forces that don’t exist, in an effort to confuse anyone scrying for them.

It could also result in the creation and enhancement of other materials that are magically immune to pyromancy, or made from something the pyromancers can’t affect. Such as impossibly durable resins, or unmelting, super-hard ice plates.

It’s also worth realizing that these kinds of powers would radically change the way metallurgy developed as a technology. When you have mages that can replicate forge technology that wouldn’t “naturally” exist for centuries. There’s a lot of potential for changing the way it evolves. You could very easily see much higher quality steels than the real world ever produced in its analogous era, and potentially even alloys that simply aren’t possible in the real world. I’m not sure what 12th century battlefields would have looked like with space age alloys, but it’s not outside the range of possibility for your setting. Especially if your pyromancers can participate in the refinement process as well. This also leads to the potential that they may have materials that are centuries ahead of their technology, (because magic allows them to work with the mater directly).

When you’re creating a world, and you come up with an idea, usually, the best thing to do after that is sit there, and see if you can find all the ways people would react to it. An ability like being able to instantly heat metal to forging temperatures would be dangerous in combat, but it would also have many other potential applications.

Hey just wanted to say I love the Glitchtale series and I can't wait for the next one! (I can wait unlike some people tho) So I have a question, how does human magic work exactly?Do they specialize in certain things based on their trait. or do all the other traits besides fear and determination have the same basic abilities? What I mean is can that bravery girl use shields like Cam and can Cam use that projectile magic like Bravery or is that something only their trait can do?

each trait has a representative “type” of magic.

For example, green magic is based on defense, even tho you can use it as offense sometimes, it is meant to be a defensive type of magic.

Or yellow magic which is based on proyectiles. The kid from the game had an empty gun that shot magic bullets, the old wizard had a bow… and the new kid from glitchtale will have a slingshot.

So, our party (the same one with the 9 year old halfling wizard) is investigating a temple, and we find a table full of rotten food and goblets full of human blood that is still warm. After discovering that the goblets and an altar in the room are magical, we are trying to figure out how the magic works.

Me (half-orc cleric): I want to pick up the goblet from the ground a put a chicken leg in it.
DM: Okay.
Me: I want to put the goblet with the chicken leg in it on the altar. Is the chicken still rotten?
DM: There is now a chicken leg in a goblet on an altar. The chicken is still rotten.

The nature of the Veil

I never post meta because I prefer to write it out, but Wikipedia has some really great animations of the harmonic series.  I saw it and thought… what if this is how the Veil works?  What if the Veil is the dissonance that disrupts the consonant, harmonic nature between the real world and the Fade?

There are waveform animations over at Wiki, but this presents a few ideas to me regarding partial breaches of the Veil/thinning of the Veil.  I’m not going to go much farther than this conceptualization because I don’t think truly this is how magic works in Thedas, but when the Inquisitor says, “The Veil is more like a vibration,” this is what I think about.

Mastering Witchcraft by Paul Huson

This book is a classic. Mr. Huson goes over the basics of magical work, including steps on how to visualize and how magic works. He also instructs you on how to prepare your ritual tools and begin casting magic. The book also delves in to deeper stuff, such as summoning Vassago (a demon). If you are interested in traditional witchcraft, this book is for you.

Mystical Origins of the Tarot by Paul Huson

Another author (maybe Robin Artisson?) described this as the only book on tarot you will ever need. I agree. It is filled with history as well as unique interpretations of the cards. If you are a tarot reader, this book is a must to further your education and your reading skills.

The Complete Guide to Psychic Development by Cassandra Eason

This book is very New Age. It does have a lot of good stuff in it. She does generally expect that you have a library of crystals and a cabinet of candles as even her basic rituals call for a variety of specific stones and 13 pink candles. Glean what you can from this book and see where perhaps you can simplify some of her rituals. As the name implies, this book is all about psychic development.

Psychic Self-Defense by Dion Fortune

Awesome book. I’ve read it a few times. If you want a peek at how magic can really mess up your life, read this book. There are so many hidden gems here, it’s really worthwhile.

The Witch’s Familiar by Raven Grimassi

A really interesting book on how a witch may obtain and control their familiar spirit.

Grimoire of the Thorn-Blooded Witch by Raven Grimassi

This book details Grimassi’s personal tradition. If you want a solid tradition to follow, this book makes a very good read. It is also just a good book in general and it is very plant and nature based.

Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham

I use this resource regularly, it is probably my most-used resource. Learn the magical properties of your everyday herbs at home. The index in the back is invaluable for figuring out which herbs to use for your spells.

Encyclopedia of Magical Stones by Scott Cunningham

The rock version of the herbal encyclopedia.

The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft by Judika Illes

This elemental encyclopedia is excellent to educate yourself more about witchcraft. Just to warn you, if you read many of her books, some of the content is copied over between them.

The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells by Judika Illes

This book is massive. Not only does it really have 5000 spells, but it also has a formulary in the back with recipes on many oils, potions, and powders you can craft. It also has an excellent section on how to cast spells and how to use a wide variety of ritual tools.

Encyclopedia of Spirits by Judika Illes

So this book is seriously an awesome encyclopedia, especially for looking up spirits by name. It’s general entries – such as for “mermaid” or “ghost” are somewhat disappointing. The real value of this book is being able to look up arcane and archaic spirits by name. It has a lot of info on gods as well.

Pure Magic by Judika Illes

I wish someone had handed me this book when I first got started in witchcraft. If you are done with 101 posts on tumblr and ready for your next introductory step, buy a copy of this book. It is a “complete course in spellcasting.” This book delivers.

Spiritual Cleansing by Draja Mickaharic

This is an interesting book to read because it is not witchcraft; it is it’s own spiritual system. If you are looking for something new and want to expand your horizons, grab this book. You won’t be disappointed. As a handbook on spiritual cleansing, it’s techniques do not disappoint either.

Letters from the Devil’s Forest by Robin Artisson

This book is seriously so cool. If you are ready for your next intermediate step in to witchcraft, if theory interests you, if you want to read about a real witch’s experiences – pick up this book. It is not a spellbook nor a how-to guide. It’s just incredibly interesting.

The Horn of Evenwood by Robin Artisson

A great spellbook, especially for diabolists, those that want to travel to the underworld, and those that want to meet the devil himself. I would call this more of an intermediate spellbook, and while any beginner should educate themselves, it is perhaps best to wait until you have a little more experience before you tackle the rituals in this book.

A Dictionary of Angels by Gustav Davidson

This book is in my opinion especially important for Christian practitioners or any practitioner who works with angels and/or demons. It is an extremely thorough dictionary of angels and fallen angels.

Power Within The Land and Earth Light by R. J. Stewart

If you’re in to faeries, these two books are for you. They detail how to travel to Faery, how to interact with faeries, and how to transform yourself with faery magic.

The Living World of Faery by R. J. Stewart

A super interesting book. If you are in to faeries, get this book by R. J. Stewart instead of the other two – which are more similar to spellbooks. This book will educate you a lot about real faery lore.

The Devil’s Dozen by Gemma Gary

What can I say, I love Gemma Gary. The Devil’s Dozen is a fascinating book containing thirteen original rituals dedicated to the Witch’s Devil, Bucca. This book is more for diabolists and traditional witches, but if you find a copy of it, grab it. It will go well in any practitioner’s library. I would consider this book more for the intermediate practitioner, but people of all skill levels will benefit from reading it.

Traditional Witchcraft by Gemma Gary

This is “the” book on Cornish witchcraft. It is useful for anyone interested in traditional witchcraft and those seeking a more traditionally based path. This book does have some spells and rituals in it, but it’s main purpose is in describing Cornish ways.

The Black Toad by Gemma Gary

This book goes hand in hand with Traditional Witchcraft. It is a spellbook and so does not describe Cornish ways so much, but it does give you practical magical applications. This book is very traditional and not modified to make it more appetizing to modern crowds. I would readily recommend it in order to see how a very traditional witch practices.

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham

If you are interested in Wicca, this is the book for you. It describes how to practice Wicca for – well – a solitary practitioner. I don’t have a lot to say about it, but it certainly ended up in my library for a reason.

Protection & Reversal Magick by Jason Miller

I am such a Jason Miller fangirl. He is a clear and concise writer. He doesn’t waste your time. This book was my first magical book and I still reference it regularly. I would highly advise any practitioner – especially a beginner – pick up this book. It will not steer you wrong and may save you a lot of trouble.

Financial Sorcery by Jason Miller

This is the only real financial spellbook I have seen of it’s type. Rather than throwing money spells at you, Miller explains how to use magic to create real and lasting wealth. He explains why many money spells never seem to get you ahead in life and helps you craft your own magic so you can actually get ahead.

The Sorcerer’s Secrets by Jason Miller

This book is about how to cast magic, how magic works, and how to be a badass sorcerer. If I could go back and re-work my path I would pick up this book right away. It has heavily influenced my beliefs and made me a better practitioner.

Seven Spheres by Rufus Opus

If you are interested in magic besides witchcraft, this book on hermeticism is excellent. It teaches you about the “seven spheres” and how to summon the planetary spirits and intelligences to aid your life. Having performed the rituals in this book, I can say that they are extremely powerful. If you are looking for magic to radically change your life, this is the book for you.

The Practical Psychic Self-Defense Handbook by Robert Bruce

This book is not witchcraft, it is more on the psychic spectrum of practice. It gets in to really intense defense mechanisms and I have succesfully used his techniques to keep me safe.

Correspondences by Sandra Kynes

This is a very neat reference book. It lists how correspondences are related to one another. It is difficult to explain, but it is a really neat book if you want to research how plants, animals, gods, stones, colors, numbers, etc., are interrelated.


It’s difficult to properly eulogize the Undertaker’s career because it feels like we’ve been slowly doing that for years, as each Wrestlemania raised new questions about his ability to carry on.  Now that the end is finally here, though, something should be said.

I started watching WWE about a year before Taker debuted, and I cannot adequately explain what it like hearing about him right after Survivor Series 1990.  No rock music, no neon colors.  No weaknesses for the good guys to exploit.  No passion for anything that would be his undoing.  The only thing that really did make sense was that anybody managed by that jerkface Brother Love had to be seriously bad news.  He didn’t fit in with what I understood about pro wrestling.  Looking back, that was because he would help change what pro wrestling was.

My brothers and I were fascinated with the Undertaker.  How do you beat a guy that’s already dead?  People would hit him with foreign objects and he wouldn’t flinch.  One time Greg Valentine put him in the figure-four leglock and he just laid there like he didn’t care.  I needed to make sense of this guy, figure out how his magic worked.  At some point I came to realize that there were no answers, that the enduring mystery was the real source of his psychological advantage.

I’ve seen Undertaker described as the gimmick to end all gimmicks.  Not that that stopped promoters from trotting out all manner of wrestling plumbers, wrestling dentists, and wrestling revenuers.  But most of them had to square off with the Undertaker, which ensured that all of them looked ridiculous trying to compete with a wrestling angel of death.  I think that situation encouraged the trend, beginning in the late ‘90s, of wrestlers being presented as athletes first and “here’s my shtick to psyche-out my opponents” second.  By 2000, that trend was starting to make Taker himself look ridiculous.

Undertaker had a sort of second career at that point, where the character was less about being goth Frankenstein than the aura of work ethic and respect that surrounded a legendary company man.  The awe of associating him with the spectre of death sort of took a back seat to the awe of knowing that nothing you did would ever overshadow this man’s career.  Even if you managed to beat the Undertaker, the odds were pretty good that he’d outlast you.

It’s tough to pinpoint exactly where Taker went into decline, but for me the symbolic turning point was Wrestlemania XXVII, where the angle was that he could beat Triple H but couldn’t walk out under his own power.  It was kayfabe to set up a rematch the following year, but it injected a new kind of mortality into the character–it became a legitimate question whether Undertaker still had it, whether he’d have to lose soon because he might retire at any time.  After a lackluster performance at the 2017 Royal Rumble, I think everyone kinda knew his time was up.  Better to go out now than to wait another year, chasing the perfect finale.

This isn’t the first time the Undertaker has left his gloves in the ring, so some part of me believes this may not really be the end.  I hope it is, though.  I want to know this guy gets to enjoy retirement and undergoes whatever surgeries he’s been putting off.  I want to see the day when he can do interviews out of character, and talk about the sacrifices he made for his art.  Mark Calaway has been the Undertaker for just over 26 years.  It’s high time he gets to be just an ordinary man.
