how has no one seen this yet

Aries: Broken hearts and bloodstained fingers, your voice reminds me of a lively melody. A warriors heart with a delicate soul, an unlikely combination you put together so well. You have it hard, don’t you? Yet you get up with only the skin at your knees scraped and dripping red.

Taurus: The reminiscence of a rose - the single flower that’s so impossible to hate, delicate and pretty, even when it stops blooming. Your voice could calm even the most chaotic oceans, always soothing with soft notes of comfort. Even your eyes could mesmerise the most soulless creature; your sweet face leaves me dreaming in heartache.

Gemini: Your eyes twinkle with mischief, what are you thinking about? That’s what I always wonder, the curve of your mouth always makes me suspect. I love your mind, I think that’s my favourite thing of yours, you tell me so much I cannot help but wonder the things you leave unsaid.

Cancer: Lovely eyes filled with unspilled tears, how can you be so wonderful? I’ve always said that, people who can feel so much have the capacity to be the kindest. How have you not broken yet? I think I can admire that. Sensitive, emotional, I dream of you. Your heart reminds me of an endless sea, so much you leave undiscovered.

Leo: It’s enamouring, how full of life you are - your soul could rival the sun, it’s as if you shimmer with the promise of eternal bliss. Perhaps that’s why you so easily win the hearts of all; so golden and glamorous. I’ve always said your gaze held the most wonderful of stars, even now I can still count them; youthful and shining. I think it might be impossible to ever fully hate you, your warmth is far too compelling.

Virgo: I find it odd that you can’t see your beauty, it’s always been so obvious to me. Why must you be so harsh to yourself? Especially when you’re so obviously perfect. I think it’s your innocence that draws me in most, always so pure and lovely; like the sweetest rose. I wish I could win your heart, but I know I’m undeserving. Yet there’s a gentleness in you I can’t help but have.

Libra: Ah, Aphrodite’s purest creation - how could you not adore such a thing? There’s a sweet nostalgia of love about you that makes my heart ache; as if I miss a love I never had. I think your nativity is what makes you so pure amongst the rest of us. There’s an underlying softness to everything you do.

Scorpio: I don’t think there are enough words to describe you, your depths are unfathomable. I think here lies the true meaning of profound. There’s a frustrating beauty in you I can’t seem to point out, perhaps it’s because it’s so buried. You are kind, so very kind, I don’t understand where people see your darkness. Or perhaps I do. I think it’s in your eyes, how dark they seem even when you smile. They’re the eyes of someone who has seen tragedies, yet you arose from them with a certain light and grace that can’t help but seem lovely.

Sagittarius: An adventurer, a wandering soul always searching for its next quest - you’ve danced with the sun and conversed with the stars. The universe knows you better than you know yourself. You are wild and brimming with the promises of life, so much too see, so much to learn! There is truly nothing more lovely than the life of one who experiences, I see the whole world when I’m with you.

Capricorn: Cold eyes and shy smiles, I know you’re gentler than you believe. Your stars are least private in December, perhaps that’s why it’s my favourite month. I admire your patience the most, it brings peace to my fiery spirit. It’s funny, how unemotional you portray yourself - your soul warming smile contradicts that in every way, it’s unexpected yet not at all surprising.

Aquarius: The ruler of rebellion, invention and revolution - it’s as if you shake the world awake. Your mind is the strangest place I love to be in, show me all your thoughts; especially the ones you’d never think of sharing. A lover and a loner, detached yet still connected, you always leave me wondering.

Pisces: The moon tells me tales of your heart every month when she’s full and shining, I wonder how it hasn’t burst yet. She tells me there’s a beautiful idealism to you, I don’t think there’s a single dream you haven’t dreamt. I think it’s beautiful, how such a pure soul can exist. My heart aches when I hear the stars whisper soft words of comfort you every night you disappear into yourself; licking wounds and drowning in sorrows - your sensitivity is what’s most raw. I hope one day you can find your heart.

—  My Thoughts On The Signs
Ok but can we talk about how the Paladin’s bayards don’t just suit them, but actually ARE them? THE BAYARD PICKS THE PALADIN, MR. POTTER.

The bayards are frankly the coolest metaphorical device happening in this show and I haven’t seen anyone talk about it yet (I’m sure someone has, but I feel like it’s not really… a thing??), and if my major has taught me any(useless)thing it’s to get stuck on functional motifs in storytelling so

Keith

I mean this is just fun. You’re probably not surprised that he gets the big blade because he’s main-character-red and the emo/possibly-Asian-one, but let’s consider a few things:

The fact that it’s sharp on both sides acts as a physical reminder of the duality happening within his character (he cuts others down, but internally he’s cutting himself down just as much: a double-edged sword).

Furthermore, that double edge reminds us that it’s a loner’s weapon: he needs to be able to attack with each swing, in any direction, because no one’s coming to back him up. It may be space, but dude is clearly rockin’ the lone wolf/samurai vibe. The length backs that up a bit as well–it keeps everyone he sees as an ‘enemy’ or a ‘rival’ at a distance (//side-eye @ lance).

What’s even more interesting is that if you look at Keith’s relationship with his bayard compared to his Marmora blade, they represent his hidden and public selves: who people see him as/expect him to be vs. who he truly is and wants to be (is afraid to be) himself.

Most people only see his bayard, a classic warrior/knight weapon that represents strength and grace and leadership. Keith brings this out in battle, in front of his friends, before enemies, etc. But when he’s alone at night or when he’s holed up in the desert, the blade on his mind and in his hand is his Marmora dagger. Despite being a secret for so long, it is actually this blade (and not the bayard he got from Voltron) which Keith always keeps close to him (and which he keeps strictly concealed).

He covers up the mark on the hilt as if to cover his own hidden thoughts and feelings (and maybe even dubious past). In public, he feels he can proudly show his bayard but doesn’t want anyone to know he has the dagger, even before he himself knows what it might mean.

Even more interestingly, this blade also represents close combat–letting people get close to you–and the desire to protect others, showing that these are things Keith thinks about, feels, and even wants, but is afraid to show to those around him. What’s more, while the obvious skills and general cool-dude-ness associated with the bayard are something Keith has earned/achieved by his own merit, the Marmora dagger (and all the things it represents) were something he was born with; something inherently part of him. Ironically, once Keith learns more about his dagger and what it represents, it becomes longer–it adds distance, just as the truth about his past puts distance between him and the other paladins.

Like, I could literally (gladly) write an entire essay just on the symbolism of how Keith treats these blades, but you get the idea.

I was gonna do Shiro next but his is even sadder than Keith’s so let’s do

Pidge

So some things about this are obvious: it bears a (kind of adorable similarity) in shape to her head. It’s small, she’s small, but if you underestimate either of them you will be sorry. It’s an incredibly quick/nimble weapon (a great parallel for her stinging wit). Her bayard is designed for quick, surgically precise movements, which is exactly how Pidge works (both mentally and metaphorically).

However, while it has great attack capabilities, that’s clearly not the bayard’s (or Pidge’s) main purpose; it’s a necessary consequence in the pursuit of other goals. Rather, the transformative and flexible uses of Pidge’s bayard emphasize the desire to be useful and to solve problems over attacking. This is belied by the fact that Pidge forms Voltron’s shield. Pidge would much rather think her way out of/around a problem than charge in head-first

Her bayard is a reflection of that. Pidge’s bayard is also the most technically complicated, which is another great parallel for her mind. Furthermore, the grappling hook function of her bayard echoes her desire to find things out of reach, and cast out into space and bring those things close to her, or herself to them (*cough*MATT*cough*).

TL;DR: it’s an all-purpose, unassuming weapon meant to perform multiple tasks in an efficient, creative way, and it focuses on problem solving/extraction more than brute attack (though it packs plenty of punch when cornered). And, of course, though she be but little, she is fierce.

Lance

As his swagger (and even his name, like talk about being on the nose) suggests, Lance is totally in-your-face, up-in-your-business blabbermouth who seems pretty simple to understand. So why does he have the weapon that arguably requires the most finesse, patience, and also has a long range? Because that’s what Lance is really like under all that talk. It may seem like Lance lives with the words “are we there yet” on his tongue, but consider this: Lance wanted to be a pilot, but was originally relegated to commercial-class ranks. Did that stop him? Nope. He kept at it until he made it to the top of those ranks (it’s safe to assume that if they only promoted one pilot to fighter-class after Keith’s expulsion, it would be the top of the commercial-class students). That’s more patience than any of the other paladins have shown.

As a gun in a team that has close-combat weapons, Lance’s bayard automatically assumes a supportive role (despite all his talk about beating Keith and being the best), and we see this multiple times throughout the show. His first day as a fighter-class pilot, what does Lance do? Talks to his team and says they should stick together. How does he find out about Shiro? He’s following Pidge and asking about what she’s up to–crazy theories that others wouldn’t care to hear out. There are a lot of other examples of this (notably, when he throws himself in front of Coran), but from the get-go we’re slyly shown that Lance actually cares about and pays attention to those around him (even though he keeps talking about kicking their butts and being #1). It makes sense, then, that his weapon would be one designed to support and provide cover for others. In fact, we see Lance doing exactly this in the first episode when Pidge mouths off and he rushes in to cover for her.

Sadly, as one of the longer-range weapons, Lance’s bayard is also one of the loneliest metaphors in the group, and we see the reason for this just as much in VLD: Lance doesn’t feel appreciated (or sometimes even accepted) by the people around him. He often feels distant, though not by choice. He may shoot (ha) his mouth off a lot, but at the end of the day it’s pretty apparent that this boy craves love and attention, almost as much as he wants to be perceived as a ‘top gun’ (double ha) within the group.

A gun–especially the rapid-fire type that Lance has–further mirrors his tendency to be impulsive (and even impetuous) rather than controlled and thoughtful. On the bright side, though, it is exactly that willingness to pull the trigger that has catapulted the gang forward on a number of occasions.

Shiro

Between Shiro’s arm and his bayard there are so many different things going on here I don’t even know how I can touch on all of them. If I could write an essay on Keith’s weapons, I could write a BOOK on Shiro’s.

First, let’s talk about Shiro’s actual bayard. In Zarkon’s hands, you can read this as a physical extension of Shiro’s freedom, or even as Shiro himself: Zarkon took the bayard–something meant to be used for good–from another world, and then warped it in the hopes of using it to cause destruction.

The good news is that both Shiro and the bayard escape Zarkon’s clutches because of Voltron, and though Zarkon intended to use them, they instead become the strongest weapons to fight against him. They will always feel the effects of Zarkon’s influence and ownership–the bayard because of Zarkon’s former paladin connections, and Shiro because of his arm and PTSD–but they still fight. In the end, it is Zarkon’s obsession with them as his former ‘possessions’ that becomes his downfall. So deep is his trauma that Shiro actually waits until it looks like they’re about to die (when Voltron is in an electric headlock) to activate his bayard. Why? Because he doesn’t trust his arm, he doesn’t trust his hold on the bayard or the lion (don’t even get me STARTED on how the lion–down it’s right-hand weapon and still somewhat under Zarkon’s control–represents Shiro himself), and as a result he doesn’t trust himself to be stronger than Zarkon.

Even when Shiro finally gets the bayard back, he doesn’t call it his bayard, or the black bayard; he calls it Zarkon’s bayard (and it looks the part). This can be seen as a mirror for how Shiro sees himself: even though it’s a bayard, Zarkon tainted it, and now it doesn’t belong to him even though it’s rightfully his and he has it in his hands (which, ironically, is still technically Zarkon’s hand… you get the picture).

However, as Keith corrects him (”you’ve got your bayard”), the bayard rejects the changes Zarkon forced upon it, and reverts to a form that matches Shiro and the other paladins (likely how it looked before Zarkon started using it for evil). Just as the paladins healed Shiro by rescuing him and making him part of Voltron, Shiro does the same for the black bayard. Indeed, he only pulls out the power necessary to retrieve the black bayard once he wakes up to find the team fighting to protect him. It might be telling symbolically that Shiro leaves his bayard behind when he goes missing at the end of the season–perhaps he’s won his freedom only to have it taken once again.

 Which leads me to…

The black bayard could also represent Shiro’s memories: both are known to exist, and we get hints/flashes/teases throughout the show, but both are initially “lost”. Slowly, it is revealed just how both Shiro’s bayard and his memories have been taken/corrupted by Zarkon. We see this in the way Shiro’s memories haunt him, only to frustratingly elude  him when he needs them. When Shiro finally tries to find out more about why Zarkon has the bayard, he’s also facing his own mind–his memories, his insecurities, and his apprehension at what fate awaits him–as well.  In this sense, when Shiro reclaims the black bayard, he is also reclaiming so much more: the hold/fear Zarkon held over him, the insufficiency and anxiety he felt because of it, etc.

You can also read the bayard as a mirror for Shiro’s arm: Zarkon took Shiro’s arm and replaced it with something Galran. Shiro joins Voltron only to find that Zarkon also has his metaphorical right hand–his weapon. Shiro can’t use the weapon he should be holding (in a hand he doesn’t have because of Zarkon) because Zarkon took it. Talk about a vicious cycle. This symbolism is supported all through season 1 and parts of season 2 where we see Shiro simultaneously struggle with controlling Zarkon’s lasting effects on Voltron and coming to grips (ha) with controlling his arm. It’s hinted–both during battle and through PTSD–that if Shiro doesn’t control his arm, it will control him, just as Zarkon demonstrates that if Shiro can’t reclaim the bayard, Zarkon will use it to kill him (we see a similar parallel with his memories).

I’m just going to stop here because the black bayard and Shiro’s arm can represent so many different things that it totally distracts me and I can only really do it justice by literally sitting down and writing out a full on dissertation on it.

But TL;DR: Shiro’s arm and his bayard are in a crazy, soap-opera drama with Zarkon on so many different levels and it is symbolistically incredible.

Hunk

Hunk’s bayard, much like Hunk, is pretty straight-forward and simple. Physically, it’s a big weapon. A big, hulking (Hunking????) weapon. It looks incredibly imposing, but its chief function isn’t destruction, but preventing destruction. Just as Hunk likes to avoid violence, his canon is mostly used to disable enemy weapons as part of Voltron, and individually Hunk uses it to provide long-range cover fire for his team (when he tries to use it in a more actively combative role, he just ends up almost shooting Pidge… gg, Hunk).

Unlike Lance’s more nimble and quick-fire weapon, Hunk’s takes a lot of strength to move around and a long time to power up–this mirrors Hunk’s own well-rooted stance (he’s not easily swayed), and his cautious nature. He doesn’t do things off-the-cuff or on a whim; he thinks them through first. Indeed, it’s almost always Hunk warning the others of the possible outcomes of their proposed escapades.

He’s also slow to anger, just as his weapon is slow to fire. However, once he has decided to take a shot, his firepower is incredible, just as when he does decide to take action (like with the Balmerans), his will is unstoppable.

I could go on for days, guys. I have so much stuff I had to cut out because even the hardcorest Voltron fans don’t care about underlying motifs this much, I know, but AGH. GUYS. GUYS. THE BEAUTY??? OF THIS WRITING??? IN A KIDS’ SHOW?????

Bless.

PS this is long I didn’t proof read it SO SUE ME

So here is a full analysis of the “Shiro Clone theory”

 So here we have Shiro on some sort of operating table on a Galra ship. This looks a lot like a table that any artificial creation or CLONE is created on) Also, let’s not forget his hair. Shiro hasn’t been gone too long. It’s not likely his hair could’ve grown this much.

Look at the way he is having trouble walking and then falls. It’s like how someone who has never walked before would walk. They’re not used to their legs yet.

Shiro then sees Ulaz. But Ulaz is dead. So this must be a memory. Why would a memory of Ulaz be popping into Shiro’s mind at this moment?

It’s because “Shiro” got injected with the real Shiro’s memories, as seen here:

Flashback to this from season 2:

This would also explain why “Shiro” is having a weird headache. His head was injected with memories, which would put a lot of strain on one’s mind.

He also reacts to light and sound like someone who has never seen or heard anything before. Yes, he could’ve just been asleep; however, someone who has just been “asleep” wouldn’t react in such an extreme way like Shiro did.

Here’s where Shiro sees himself on a different operation table. This confused me at first. At first I thought it was a flashback, but once I watched it again, I realized that there was no way that this was a flashback. It was not set up like one. You can tell this is what Shiro really sees because of his shocked expression and gasp when he sees himself on the table.

Look at how deadpan Shiro’s eyes are. He’s unconscious. He also has the same haircut that he did before he disappeared. The two Shiro’s look completely different, even though not much time has passed.

Look at this. It looks as if they’re PRESERVING the REAL Shiro’s body.

Also, look at what one of the Galras says. This is part of a PLAN

They’re letting “Shiro” escape.

Which according to this commander, is all part of the plan. It seems as if they have planned a fake Shiro to go back to Voltron for some sort of plan. Maybe to get information, or to sabotage Voltron’s plans.

“Shiro” then lands on an ice planet and is rescued by these rebel fighters. “Shiro” tells them his name and explains that he is part of Voltron.

These are REBEL FIGHTERS. It’s impossible that they don’t know who Voltron is. They also have probably heard of or even seen Shiro. But for SOME REASON, they don’t believe him.

After Keith finds “Shiro”, he has a conversation with him in his room and tells him this:

However, “Shiro’s” reply is “Yeah, I’ll try.” I’ll TRY. That is not like Shiro at all. Yes, he’s hurt, but we all know he wouldn’t hesitate to see the rest of the team, especially in this scenario where he has been gone and the team had no idea what happened to him and were extremely worried. This response is also very uncaring sounding, which is again, not like Shiro, who cares a lot about his team.

And what the heck is THIS? And I’m not just talking about the haircut and pose. What he says sounds very robotic in a way. This is not what Shiro would say after disappearing and then finally seeing his team, his FAMILY, again. There’s no love. We all know he would be very emotional and possibly even console them. But what he says is cheerful, as if he had never been gone. And it sounds extremely planned or PROGRAMMED.

And last,  but possibly one of the biggest hints that this is a clone of Shiro, is what happens when Shiro tries to pilot the black lion.

It doesn’t respond to him. Yes, Keith has been the black lion recently and bonded with it, but like I said, it hasn’t been that long. Plus, Shiro was the black paladin before Keith and had a stronger bond with her. There’s no way that she wouldn’t let Shiro pilot her. That’s HIS lion. Unless…that’s not Shiro…

And that is all of the proof that I caught for this theory that I, and so many others are believing. I just hope that they realize it’s not really Shiro soon…

i don’t think i’ve made a post about this yet, but i find it fascinating how MHA is kinda the story of a next gen shonen story, only the audience has never seen the previous generation.

All Might was the protagonist of his story, and now he’s reaching his limit and needs to retire. the story focus is on the new generation surpassing the old, and learning from their mistakes. All Might doesn’t want Izuku to experience the same pain he did, by losing his master. instead, he’s focusing on helping Izuku become the next Symbol of Peace.

Izuku is learning that self-sacrifice isn’t the end all, be all for heroes. that you can’t just wreck your body to save someone else, because sooner or later it’ll catch up with you.

Endeavor is what would happen if a shonen rivalry continued on into adulthood without ever resolving itself. he’s the logical conclusion of an unresolved rivalry of someone who couldn’t take being left behind. Bakugou’s development is in direct contrast to Endeavor’s, because Bakugou is learning and growing and slowly letting go of his spite and frustration and need to be number one all the time, unlike Endeavor

Toshinori made himself the Symbol of Peace, and as a result he was the only thing keeping society on it’s feet. once he fell, so did everything keeping the villains at bay. the new generation are all going to learn from this and become more symbols, holding up the peace together instead of just relying on one person.

the next generation is all about Teamwork, not just working as individuals.

Toshinori lost his place as a hero after he went after All for One in revenge those 6 years ago. he lost sight of his heroism in order to avenge Nana. that’s the moment he fell. that’s why he can no longer be a hero anymore, because of the injuries he sustained from that fight.

Nana gave up her child and cut herself off from her family because she couldn’t take the pain of it anymore. she likely kept herself emotionally distant from Toshinori because of this, during their short time together, and Toshinori is doing the complete opposite of what she did; Toshinori is getting close to Izuku and they’re both emotionally supporting each other.

there’s so much about Toshi’s life that we don’t know about, and it’s his life that would’ve been the star of the previous generation. how he was quirkless, how he wanted to become a hero, and a symbol who could stop crime, how he met Nana and earned her trust and gained her powers, how he lost her and trained under Gran Torino, how Endeavor met him and sparked that rivalry, how he eventually became All Might and how his reputation alone nearly stopped crime (something no hero in any previous generation was able to do).

his whole life could be told in it’s own series, but we, the audience, aren’t privy to that information. we just know the bare bones, and occasionally we find out more as the story goes on. little hints of what happened before. but that’s all in the past–it’s all about helping the next generation grow now. All Might was a legend in his own time, but he’s old and injured and has to retire from hero work. instead, he’s helping a new generation of heroes grow; he’s helping Izuku become the next Symbol of Peace in his place.

the story of MHA is a next generation story without the previous generation being shown, and i think that’s fascinating.

This Is How You’ll Fall In Love In 2017
  • Aries: As someone who is both confident and courageous, oddly you’ll find yourself in a relationship that might have taken a bit of convincing. But you never gave up on the person. It’s going to be someone you’ve had your eye on and have known for a while. In return, for your unwavering loyalty in the pursuit, this is going to be the love that makes you forget you ever cared about anyone before that.
  • Taurus: You’re already in love. You’re going to get back with your ex this year. All will be forgiven. You guys are going to make it.
  • Gemini: You’re someone who puts their job ahead of everything in their life. Because you invest a lot of time and emotions into it, you’re going to find yourself in a relationship with someone you work with. As complicated as it’s going to seem at first because initially, you’re going to reject the idea, the person won’t let you go that easy. And through their faith, you guys are going to come out on top both in your relationship and career.
  • Cancer: As someone who values family as much as you do, you’ll find yourself in a relationship with someone who knows your family very well and is very close with them. And when someone sets you up, you’ll realize how compatible you are. Falling in love will happen very quickly.
  • Leo: As someone who is a natural born leader, you’re going to find someone who challenges you in the best way and is the one who wears the pants in the relationship. You guys are going to meet and at first hate each other, then you’ll realize the teasing and testing one another, makes for a really good relationship. But neither of you will want to admit such a thing, so you’re going to stay friends for a while until one of you makes the move. The love between you two, you’ll realize has been there for a while.
  • Virgo: As someone who has analyzed every relationship in the past, to a point where it’s made you resent love, one day you’re going to meet someone and there won’t be a single doubt in your mind. They’ll reassure you and you’ll have confidence in them and in love again. It’s going to be in the summer months when you’re just trying to ‘do you,’ you’ll meet someone on a night out with your friends. Even though you didn’t want to go out, you’ll be glad you did.
  • Libra: You’re the life of every party you walk into. At said party, in your future, you’ll find yourself locking eyes with someone across the room and that’ll be it.]
  • Scorpio: I’m sure you’ve tried dating apps that have not worked. You date but don’t find yourself interested enough to pursue it anymore. Your emotional intelligence is something very rare in anyone and makes it hard for you to relate to people. But it’s something a lot of people don’t know about you. You’re the most complicated and hardest to the love of all signs but when you do love, it’s full of passion and right. The person you fall in love with next is someone from your past someone who understood you before you even understood yourself.
  • Sagittarius: As someone who has a passion for traveling and seeing the world, on one of your trips, you’re going to meet someone who is like you in every way. As you fall in love with places you haven’t seen yet, you too will find yourself falling fast for this stranger. And you’ll realize despite how different your backgrounds may be, none of it matters and you’ll overcome whatever obstacles are in your way.
  • Capricorn: You’re going to end up dating your best friend and you’ll wish you did it sooner.
  • Aquarius: While your independence is something to be admired by many, you’re going to meet someone who is going to make you not want to be single anymore. With your lifestyle and fast pace life, you’ll meet them through work or your hobbies. This person will be on the same page as you are with goals, career, and drive. You’ll motivate each other in achieving things and you’ll be one of those power couples.
  • Pisces: As someone who is highly emotional and very intact with their feelings, your love story will be one for the books. It’s going to be with someone you see often but looked right through. Then once it happens, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. It’ll be a relationship people envy but you’re going to want to keep it to yourself.
Top 10 Btvs Quotes

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is without question the defining piece of media of my life. I watched it as it aired all throughout my adolescence and it profoundly shaped my life and self in so many ways from big to small (hell, even the way I talk and randomly slap together prefixes and suffixes as a phrase called for can be traced back to Buffy).

While it has its issues, the show taught me to believe in myself, to keep going, to treasure my weirdness and the strange and awkward things that don’t fit are the best things about me and what makes me me. It showed me that superheroes come in all shapes and sizes, with and without capes, in and out of the spotlight. It defined the kind of person I wanted to be and I know there’s a whole generation of people that feel the same.

In honor of the 20th anniversary here’s a list of my personal top ten most meaningful Buffy quotes. There are a billion and fifty amazing, quotable moments and these aren’t even necessarily my favorite. These are the ones that meant the most to me, the ones that stuck with me and I think of when I need them.

“No weapons, no friends, no hope. Take all that away and what’s left?”
“Me”

“I’m the thing the monsters have nightmares about.”

"Seize the moment, ‘cause tomorrow you might be dead.”

“To forgive is an act of compassion, Buffy. It’s-it’s… it’s not done because people deserve it. It’s done because they need it.”

“I made it up. I’m making it all up. So what kind of hero does that make me?”

I’ve seen your kindness and your strength. I’ve seen the best and worst of you. And I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You’re a hell of a woman.”

“I guess I just realized how amazingly screwed up they all are. I mean, really, really screwed up, in a monumental fashion. And they have no purpose that unites them so they just drift around, blundering through life until they die… which they… they know is coming, yet every single one of them is surprised when it happens to them. They’re incapable of thinking about what they want beyond the moment. They kill each other, which is clearly insane. And yet, here’s the thing – when it’s something that really matters, they fight. I mean, they’re lame morons for fighting, but they do. They never… never quit. So I guess I will keep fighting too.”

“They’ll never know how tough it is, Dawnie. To be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes because nobody’s watching me. I saw you last night. I see you working here today. You’re not special. You’re extraordinary.”

American cartoons animated by Japanese studios and the hybrid art style that results is EXTREMELY my aesthetic and the basis for my art style - a post

I’ve been nerding out about this on twitter all day but I wanted to make a post here about it too - people often cite my work as reminding them of things like Lupin the 3rd and Cybersix, and honestly, I”m not surprised.

But do you know why?

Its because both shows were animated by a little (and by little I mean one of the oldest animation studios in Japan) animation studio by the name of Tokyo Movie Shinsha (as they were known up until the 2000s, and are now known as TMS Entertainment).

TMS is responsible for a really large chunk of my favorite animated media growing up. They are my biggest inspiration both animation and art style wise. I’m honestly completely infatuated with the hybrid style that was created in the 80s and 90s as a result of Japanese animation studios being outsourced to do American cartoons in general, but TMS really stands out as being the masters of this.

Examples

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989)

This movie went through distributor hell, falling through the hands of WB, Disney and various others. But it had an American director and was animated by TMS studio under the instruction of using a western style. Its initial release was in Japan. To this day no one really knows who owns the film property. But its one of the most shining examples of Japanese > American hybrid animation to this day and is the most prolific in making kids SWEAR this movie was anime, only to watch it again as adults and be totally confused. lmao.
It’s my favorite animated film of all time.

Galaxy High School (1986)

 This cartoon aired on the American CBS network in 1986, and was created and mostly written by Chris Columbus. It was also animated by TMS. This show sports some of the cutest animation I’ve ever seen out of TMS studio - they seemed to be given slightly more leeway on how “Japanese” it was allowed to look, despite being provided model sheets by the American character designers. This show has BIG BIG hints of Lupin throughout - mostly showcased in how the expressions, movement and especially the various running/chase scenes are animated. This show has the absolute /perfect/ blend of Japanese > American hybrid cartoon animation style, in my personal opinion. One of my absolute favorites.

Cybersix (1999)

Cybersix was a Canadian production, originally airing on the Teletoon Network in 1999. And what do you know, yet again animated by TMS studio! This show was an absolute staple of my teenhood. Not just for its gorgeous style and characters that would very clearly influence my work for years to come, but also its themes - its probably the only show I’ve ever seen to feature a truly genderfluid character, and handles gender identity with such care I’ve NEVER seen in a TV show since. This is a classy show. The animation is always breathtaking, and never skips a beat. Sadly though, due to some conflicts between production studios, the second 13 episode season never went into production, so the series is left on a bit of a cliffhanger. Still, I can not stress enough how this is a show NOT to be looked over. Its more than worth a watch.

The Real Ghostbusters (1986)

The production of this show is kind of a huge roller coaster ride that seasoned Ghostbusters fans have WAY more knowledge of and have covered it in way more detail already than I ever could ( @phelous has some great videos on his youtube channel that are worth a watch) - but it is worth noting that I had to do some slight sleuthing to discover that TMS is YET AGAIN responsible for the animation for the first 5 seasons of this show (with a Korean animation studio doing the last two) - as only DiC is credited with the production almost everywhere you look. But it’s not all that hard to see the CLEAR signs of this show being animated by a Japanese studio. The hybrid style is very prevalent here. Again, this is a show I REALLY enjoyed thoroughly as a kid due to its style and characters. I swear, I think I was just really hard wired to be drawn to TMS’ art style. lol.

These are my favorite examples. TMS is also responsible for some of my other favorite shows growing up such as Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Inspector Gadget (under the DiC label), Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, and Gargoyles (under the Disney label), and Animaniacs (under the WB label). Most of my absolute FAVORITE western TMS productions were done under the Telecom Animation Film label.

Some of my favorite anime productions of all time were done by TMS too, such as Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira (yes, the animated film with the most frames per second of all time and some of the most gorgeous animation ever put on screen), MOST installments of Lupin the 3rd, Tetsujin 28-go, Ashita no Joe, Detective Conan, Space Adventure Cobra, Magic Knight Rayearth, and tons more.

(And trust me, I do understand the underlying negative implications of what it means to outsource animation in asian countries. I of course don’t EVER support the abysmal treatment and underpaying of animators in Japan.)

But I do want to pay my respects to these animators, because whether they know it or not, they created something really wonderful in this process that I admire and am extremely inspired by.

In my opinion, TMS deserves the same amount of respect and notoriety as the likes of studio Ghibli.

So yes, whenever someone sends me an ask “hey, your style reminds me of (insert TMS show here) - and its always these shows they point out, lol - I’m just going to direct them to this post.

I can’t stress enough just how clearly this style has influenced my own. I hope you all can see it now. lol.

Thanks for reading and taking this time to geek out about animation aesthetics with me. ;;; I’d also love to hear about any shows you love/loved as a kid that feature this Japanese > American animation style in the replies to this post!

Thoughts About The Signs

My favorite homestuck character

Okay, but Jack Noir is THE perfect cartoon villain, and cartoon villains are hard to do well.

-Hilarious:

Goes on a murderous rampage because he doesn’t want to wear a silly outfit, and because he’s bored.  Gets off on dog magazines.  Which is funny because later he actually becomes a dog.  Murderous impulses prevent him from escaping prison.  Don’t tell me that didn’t have you laughing your ass off.

But also Terrifying:  Ho.  Ly.  Fuck.

 With the body horror chimera thing goin on and the fact he pops out of nowhere and Then he gets the pool ball eyes and Holy Actual living fuck. Bout wet my pants when he killed bro. What good is a villain if they can’t get your heart pounding a little?

-Not exactly a complex well rounded human being-(doesn’t really need to be since we understand he’s supposed to be like a video game NPC)–But multifaceted he can hold his own in comedic, dramatic, and action scenes.  And he can do them in quick succession. Hates Queens.

Loves Jade, and Licorice Scotty dogs, and Murder.

-But most importantly-Narratively logical.  His motivations are silly, and irrational, but he still HAS very clear motivations we can some up in one or two sentences.

He kills everything in sight because being omnipotent is boring.  He chases after the Felt because it’s his town and his turf.  He Stabs the guard because we’ve establish over and over again that he kind of is addicted to bloodshed.  There’s never any confusion as to what his motivations are.  And if there is, it is perfectly obvious a mystery is being set up and we’re not SUPPOSED to know, not because the author doesn’t know.  This makes him scarier because we know that he’s actually driven to do evil deeds.  And it makes him funnier too because watching strange and quirky characters be themselves in awkward situations is one of the oldest forms of comedy there is.

But seriosuly though, how many cartoon villains, or villains outside cartoon genres, have you seen who only ever want one thing, only ever function in one type of scene?   How many Bond villains are called ingenious criminal masterminds and yet they do the most stupid things imaginable, because their narrative has no logic to it?  And how many villains can be BOTH funny AND scary?  Not many?

Jack Noir is a national fucking treasure.

Okada’s character once again made me love them with all my heart. Jun is literally once of the most human characters I’ve seen in anime and I love it so much. I could relate so much to her “being to talktive problem”. Her problem is so real that actually hearts. Loved it.

I thought that the role [of Daario Naharis] was supercool. And I thought the world in which Daario lives, the world of the dragons, was one of the coolest and sexiest in the whole show. I don’t think I realized the extent of the show’s popularity at the time, funnily enough. I had seen quite a bunch of episodes, and after I was cast, I watched everything again. But I know how its popularity has helped me in the last year to land other roles that maybe before weren’t really in the cards for me yet.

2

I noticed Something that no one has talked about yet decided I might as well tell my thoughts:

Everyone is currently thinking that natsu cock-blocked Lucy and didn’t end up telling her what he was going to say (many saying he was going to confess)

I would like to add a possibility that seems possible,
Remember how several times before key moments in the manga were blanked out to hide the message behind it? I think this might be one of them, I know it sounds stupid but bare with me here,

I’ve seen A lot of people saying that there should’ve been another panel in between because it didn’t make sense to them, but that just isn’t the case here, instead let me walk you through what I think.

~~~The Theory~~~
The circled picture in the first panel is the key element here. THIS is where natsu tells Lucy what he wanted to say, think about it. It would makes sense, Lucy gets shocked to what he says and is confused, and natsu gets flustered and tries to avoid talking about it.
So was it here, that Nalu became Canon? I don’t know, I personally would say so but others might disagree. The one thing I’m almost 100% sure of is that in that panel Natsu told Lucy whatever it was he wanted to say, and by the looks of it, Natsu had been wanting to say something about a topic for quite awhile now. I mean it was mentioned right as the final arc was beginning, and when Natsu “Disappeared” so there’s no way Hiro Mashima would leave it out.
Those are my thoughts, thanks for reading!
anonymous asked:
What's your take on the whole Mass Effect Andromeda animation debacle?
I’m back, I’m jet lagged, and people are being stupid on the internet. Whee.
Off the top of my head, here are a few thoughts on the matter:
#1. It is never ever EVER ok to harass somebody personally
This whole thing about a bunch of people harassing that former EA employee is horrible and should never have happened. It is never ok to go after somebody personally for what they may or may not have done in a professional capacity. There is no justification for it. Ever. If there’s a problem with the product, everybody shoulders the blame - that includes the publisher, dev team, marketing team, everybody. Even if there was one person who worked on one feature completely solo, that person still had a boss, who had a boss, who had a boss. There are so many people involved and so many moving parts that you really can’t blame any one person except the executive producer in charge of the entire project. The person in question is most assuredly not that executive producer.
#2. People comparing ME:A to the Witcher 3 are oversimplifying
There’s a meme floating around about how the Witcher 3 was created by a couple of Slavs as if it was done by a couple of dudes in a garage somewhere, compared to ME:A, which had a huge team from EA. That’s incredibly shortsighted and utterly ridiculous. The Witcher 3 cost over $80 million to develop, which is probably a bigger budget than ME:A had. CDPR had an internal team of 240 full-time professional devs and another 1200+ contractors working on it. The Witcher 3 is “indie” in the way that Star Citizen is “indie” - they didn’t work with a separate billion-dollar publisher because they had enough money to fund the project already.
#3. From what I’ve seen, Mass Effect Andromeda has animation issues in general
From the cursory footage I’ve seen (I haven’t played the game yet since I’ve been out of the country), it looks like there’s a bunch of problems, most of which aren’t related to the facial animations at all. The characters have that weird slightly hunched-over broad-elbowed walk similar to how they walked in Dragon Age: Inquisition, and there’s something about how the elbows don’t quite sit right to me while the characters are idling. I also spotted a character in a T-pose in one clip which was a rather clear bug. The facial animation probably stands out most because players spend a lot of time in cinematic conversations, and that features the faces quite prominently.
#4. Bioware is certainly aware of the issues
From what I’ve heard, there were team members who raised the warning flags internally as well, but the decision was ultimately above their pay grades. It’s really hard to say why they decided what they did without knowing the full context, and that isn’t likely to happen. The scope of the new Mass Effect game is different than before - this is the first game of the series on Frostbite, with a new lead studio helming development (Bioware Montreal), and with new team leadership (after the departure of Casey Hudson, Mass Effect’s former executive producer). There’s a lot of moving parts where things could have broken down during development, and we’ll likely never know. They’ll never share that information publicly… nor should they. Bioware the studio shoulders the blame for it, just like Bioware the studio owns any praise they get.
Animation issues are often some of the hardest and most expensive problems to fix. Building animation rigs (skeletons) takes a lot of resources. Utilizing those rigs to build animations takes a lot of resources, even when you’re using motion capture data. Building animation systems to blend, layer and play those animations under the correct circumstances take a lot of time. Animation is one of the most expensive types of content to create - that’s why so many games reuse so much of their animation data. That said, Bioware also developed and released the extended ending to the last Mass Effect game for free in response to the fan backlash about the ending, so who knows?
Got a burning question you want answered?
Those perceptions that functioning in purity culture as an asexual girl is somehow easier are all complete nonsense.
Sure, you may not have to bury yourself in shame for every sexual thought, but you’re still taught to see yourself as a commodity that you have no choice in giving away.  It might alleviate some of the pressure in the moment–give you an external excuse to avoid having sex right now–but it’s all about “saving it for your future husband.”  It’s training young girls to hinge their choices and their bodily autonomy off of a man they haven’t even met yet.  Everything comes back to the Imaginary Future Husband and his rights over you.  We were literally told how we’d be betraying him by kissing someone else, or having sexual thoughts about anyone but him.  You think there was any exception for those of us betraying him by not having interest in him at all?
Don’t want that husband?  Don’t want to have sex on your wedding night?  Too bad, that’s what you’re here for.  Bonus points on the relgious spin on the “soulmate” idea, where if you feel like this you’re resisting the Perfect Man god already has picked out for you–how dare you refuse his gift!  How ungrateful!
Purity culture is never about girls not ever having sex; it’s about men’s obsession with the idea of having a girl who has no sexual experiences but them.  It’s about putting control of women’s sexuality in the hands of men they haven’t even met yet.  It’s about keeping food unspoiled so you can eat it later.
A woman who always remains disinterested in sex isn’t seen as “keeping herself pure” forever–she’s seen as a piece of meat at the grocery store that no one buys and it just goes rotten and gets wasted.
Dean and his sexuality
The thing is.
If you portray a character as only ever actually purchasing yellow socks, and over the space of 12 years the audience sees him buying yellow socks a dozen times or so and when asked what colour socks he likes he says “I only like yellow socks”, then you are fully expected to think that he only likes to buy socks that are yellow.
That is fine. However…
Consider if every time he has been asked or it has been implied that he might like socks that are not yellow it has been in a hostile environment and admitting to liking red socks might culturally seem like a weakness.
Consider how the environment he grew up in made him believe red socks were culturally wrong and he maybe therefore just sticks to yellow because hey it’s not like he doesn’t like yellow socks too right?!
Consider how many times he glances at and full on checks out red socks when there are some nice ones available.
Consider how, when his best friend wears red socks he struggles to compute anything else in the room and eye-fucks the hell out of those red socks to the point that his brother is an awkward moose about it and has to clear his throat or change the subject on numerous occasions.
Consider how when the red socks are forcibly taken away from him he usually goes and impulse purchases some yellow socks. But over the years it seems to satisfy him less and less.
Consider how he is so desperate for red socks by this point that he’s stopped pretending so hard to his brother that he doesn’t want the red socks and is spending most of his time trying to get his best friend back to him who happens to have the exact particular red socks that he has been pining for for years.
Consider how, after a bunch of life changing events he starts openly admitting that even though in the past he said he only liked yellow skittles for instance, he now actually admits to liking the blue, green and red ones too and that his brother just has to learn to deal with it because he’s now just done and impatient with having to hide it all, “grow up Sammy”.
Consider how he starts actually saying outloud that there are some things that he hides, that he sublimates
In conclusion:
It may not be explicitly canon yet that Dean is bisexual, but its a hella implied in the subtext.
Coupled with the fact that Dean has repeatedly and canonically admitted to hiding aspects of himself that he thinks are culturally seen as unmasculine eg. taylor swift, cake, fancy shampoo etc. To the point that in season 2 Sam actually tells him that he seems to be “Butch” and “Overcompensating”. Just saying. This is not new. This is not ‘Dabb ruining my favourite character’ or whatever, this has been there all along.
Coupled with the fact that in 12x05 he actually said the words “sublimation is kinda my thing”.
Coupled with the fact that 12x11 was a whole episode dedicated this. To explaining to the audience that Dean deep down is not who he portrays himself to be due to all the baggage he has accumulated over the years, heavily relatable to the whole ‘red and yellow socks’ metaphor. Also hella relevant in the whole ‘who are you’ discussions this season with the brainwashing, Alesha, Cas, the heart v brain v memories discussion. It is repeatedly shown that it is the heart that is who you really are, not the memories.
What I’m saying is it might not be canonically explicit yet but it sure is leading that way and this is not a new thing, it’s been in the subtext since season 1, it’s just only now coming to the surface as we are at the point in the story where Dean is starting to learn who he is and reconcile the old and the new within himself and accept himself for who he is.
This is not out of character. It is entirely IN character. You just have to have looked at who that character really is beyond the facade since the pilot to see it.
And hell, if a guy likes red and yellow socks why can’t he have both?
Supergirl fantasy episode:
Open on Kara’s apartment: Kara tells Alex all about Mon-El and how he kissed her and now is being a superhero for her. Alex sighs, rubs her forehead. She is so over boys and their shit, especially wanting to be superheroes and falling for her sister.
Cut to: Alex at the bar, watching Mon-El pouring drinks and flirting with girls. Her mouth twists into that smirk as her eyes narrow. Maggie catches her gaze and gives her a look, but says nothing. She hasn’t seen that side of Alex yet.
Alex makes a few discrete calls. Lucy has just the place, a decommissioned base, and Vasquez reluctantly agrees to help. Who doesn’t have a crush on Alex, or for that matter, Kara?
They grab Mon-El one night as he’s leaving yet another woman’s apartment, stash him at the base. It’s harder to get Winn’s cooperation, so they don’t tell him what it’s for. They just convince him how awesome it will be to get Mon-El’s pod back in working order.
Maggie gets suspicious about Alex’s motorcycle trips to the desert and follows her. She discovers Mon-El locked away and waits to confront her girlfriend. Alex tells her it’s for Kara, and Maggie says, you kidnapped someone for your sister? Alex points out how happy Kara has been for the last week. Maggie agrees to help but is a little worried about how turned on she is by this side of her girlfriend.
In the meantime, Kara makes a few half-hearted attempts to find Mon-El out of a sense of obligation, but gives up easily, especially when M'gann points out all the women he’s been flirting with or going home with lately. She’s privately relieved to have him gone.
Alex, meanwhile, has been subtly (she thinks) asking J'onn about planets and interspace travel. He reads her mind, but doesn’t say anything. Later, he finds her calculations on the computer and fixes the coordinates. She’s a bioengineer, after all, not an astrophysicist.
Finally, it’s time. Lucy, Vasquez, and Maggie bundle Mon-El into the pod while Alex sets the coordinates and starts the ignition. J'onn keeps Kara occupied with minor emergencies while keeping an eye on the desert. Finally, he sees a streak of light heading toward the sky, and he smiles. Kara joins him just as the light in the sky fades. What was that, she asks. Lucky star, he tells her. Lucky star.
