how do you listen to music?

Tagged by @woozjae for 10 Korean songs I’m currently listening to:

Take the Dive - Jonghyun | Look (봐) - Red Velvet | Rude Love - f(x) | Euphoria - Jungkook | Moon - Jonghyun | Tell Me What to Do - SHINee | Outro: Love is Not Over - BTS | 스니커즈 - YB vs RRM | 그리고, 남겨진 것들 (The Day Before) - Nell | 우린 봄이 오기 전에 (Before Our Spring) - Jonghyun

I started doing this thinking about how it would be so embarrassing because it would reveal how I am an old fart and that I obviously don’t bother listening to new music – but then I realized it ended up exposing a lot more. I guess. I guess I’m still hurting.

Write With Me?

Hey guys! I’ve got some time set aside to get writing done and I often find that it’s nice to write alongside others. So if you also want to write tonight and you were looking for some motivation here it is.

How It Works:

Obviously, we can’t all be in the same room so instead all you need to do is get writing!

Respond to this post letting us know you’re joining and what you’re working on.

Send me asks if you want, telling me what music you’re listening to or what snacks you’ve got or anything else you like.

When you’re done (whenever that may be) you can respond again if you like or make a new post and tag me saying how much you got done or maybe sharing a snippet so we can all share in your success!

Don’t forget to interact with others too. Let’s remember what writeblr is all about.

people have been messaging me to reveal my face (tho i’ve done this already lol) and to tell more abt myself here so here you goooo? 💭

april study challenge

Day 22: How much noise do you like when you’re studying? Do you like to listen to music/white noise, or does it need to be silent?

it’s impossible to find a completely silent place in my house so i always have white noise or instrumental music playing in my headphones. i’m very sensitive to sound so finding a good playlist is extremely important to me and my study time.

THAT album challenge

I got tagged by the lovely @lesbiansassemble !!!

Thank you so much, I loooove talking about music. So muuuuch.

Post 10 albums that have had an impact on your life and that you still listen to. You can explain them if you want but you have to tag 10 others to do it!

1. HIM - Love Metal I saw the clip for the funeral of hearts and that’s how I started listening to metal, wearing black clothes. Huge impact, great album.

2. Late of the pier - Fantasy black channel Weird electro indie that makes no sense and has colours and strangeness? Yes, thank you. A gem of strange indie

3. Depeche mode - Music for the masses I love Depeche mode a lot, from the slow 80′s electrpop, to the rock goth from later, but music for the masses is no doubt my fave. I still get chill from “Never let me down again”

4. Scary kids scaring kids - Scary kids scaring kids The emo phase, ladies and gentleman. I saw a post in a blog that said “this band will change your life” and I was ready to bitterly be underimpressed. But this band is the perfect emo band, darkness, angsty lyrics, guitars. Life changing indeed.

5. Final fantasy (Owen Pallett) - He poos clouds Owen Pallett is a canadian ginger gay violinist that I love so much. He composes, sings, plays the violin and keyboard and does the whole of his songs (soft, heartfelt violiny indie rock). He’s great.

6. Berri txarrak - Jaio.Musika.Hil Wonderful basque metal of the best kind. Great guitars, great lyrics, great songs. Also have helped in many exams.

7. Kasabian - Velociraptor! Choosing a Kasabian album has been tough, cos I love them all but this one has switchblade smiles and goodby kiss and many many tunes. They are great band and kasabian continues to be incredible.

8. Polarkreis 18 - The colour of snow Polarkreis 18′s music is a mix of a fave things. Indie soft base? Check. Violins? Check. A touch of electronica? Check. It’s different, it’s emotional, it’s sad but uplifting. Make yourselves a favour and listen to dreamdancer

9. Billy Talent - II Punk with great lyrics and screams in the songs, another of my passions. I chose two because it’s the first I heard of them.

10. Fleet foxes - Fleet foxes The music Fleet foxes make is just… breathtakingly beautiful. I remember seeing them live last year, after a very tough couple of months and almost crying because I’d forgotten such beauty existed. They bring joy into my life.

I tag: @aluxra @the-cookie-of-doom @hidinginabox @cryptid-batman @arwione @heartbreakhotelsuite505 and @lovedvaa

At first it started with nights on the floor, begging for any god to make me feel something other than the hurt. The sadness consumed me and I felt the heartbreak of thousands of different lives. I have always been romantic with my word choices huh?

Then it became journaling and waking up each day asking myself “what do I want to do today.”

I started to wash my sheets and clean out my closet. I listened to music that made me feel alive and jump up and down, acting like there wasn’t a care in the world. But eventually my sheets got dirty again and the jumping made me exhausted.

God, I was so exhausted.

Take this how you will but not everyday will be a good day. Some are better than others and your heart is happy and content in the moment you are in. Some days you will be looking forward to tomorrow and not 100% in the now. And some days you will have darkness clouding your mind and you may seem like a lost cause but I swear to you this sadness isn’t forever.

At the end of this all there is love, only love. Love will get you through, love will break you heart but then I swear, love will find you when it’s time again.

—  love is here and there but it’s always within you

Gentle Reminders

💜Your worth isn’t tied to what you do. You are infinitely more valuable than that.

💜 You are allowed to make mistakes. We all do. Mistakes don’t mean you’re incompetent, stupid, or weak.

💜 Every atom in your body is the same age as every other atom in the universe. You are timeless stardust.

💜 What people say about you tells you more about them than it does about yourself.

💜 You are more important than you realize.

💜 You have the right to exist, take up space, have a voice, and you matter a whole hecking lot.

💜 Everybody struggles with their body. Everybody.

💜 Most people aren’t as successful as they seem on social media. Everyone has struggles.

💜 And most people want to help you, too. All you have to do is know how to ask. That takes practice.

💜 No heartbreak, no matter how intense, stays as dark and vivid as it initially feels forever. (This wisdom comes from experience. I’m a survivor of child abuse. And a couple of my friends were murdered.)

💜 Mental illness isn’t imaginary. Taking medication and seeing a therapist doesn’t make you weak or dangerous. It means you care about your health. Anyone who mocks you for this doesn’t care about your health as much as they might say they do.

💜 Whenever possible, stay away from negative people both in real life and online. Especially if they like to tear you down.

💜 The music you listen to, stories you read, and shows you watch affect your mood and energy more than you may consciously know. Choose wisely.

💜 You are more than your thoughts and feelings. You have more control than you might realize.

💜 It is okay to rest. It is okay to go slowly. It is okay to fail.

💜 This post will send you good energy to make positive changes. Like to charge. Reblog to cast.

teaching yourself a language

i’ve gotten questions multiple times about how to start learning swedish and how to go about when starting learning a new language, so i thought i’d make a masterpost about it. obviously learning differs from person to person, especially with languages, but this is what i do to study french, and what i’ve found best works for me

apps to get started:

if you know nothing about a language a good place to get started is with basic words and basic grammar. there are a lot of apps / websites to choose from, some of the most popular are

  • Duolingo, has the benefit of being free, and has 27 languages to choose from. with Duolingo you start with the basics of “hello”, “my name is” “i am” and it gradually gets harder the better you get. make sure you don’t only use it as an app though, because then you’ll miss the grammar explanations available on the website
  • Babbel, unlike Duolingo Babbel isn’t free, and Babbel only has 14 languages to choose from. starts off similar to Duolingo but with Babbel you get more detailed grammar explanations and you don’t fall into the trap of having to learn long lists of words relating to one very specific subject before learning basic grammar, as you do with Duolingo. In Babbel you can also choose the courses that feel relevant to you, and don’t have to clear a certain course to move on to the next one
  • Memrise, works similarly to the two above. there is a free version but you have to pay to get to PRO level

this type of course is a great foundation for learning a language, and almost vital when first starting out (if you’re learning on your own), but make sure it’s not your only source, and that you’re continuously talking to native speakers, reading, watching movies, listening to the radio and so on to get a grip on what the language is like when spoken naturally

hearing the language:

watching tv and movies

when watching tv and movies you could either do it in two different ways, with different benefits

  • with subtitles (in language spoken), the benefit with this is that you can read a word or sentence and directly see how it’s pronounced, and vice versa. the downside is that this way easily draws attention away from the speech, it’s easy to get carried away focusing on the subtitles
  • without subtitles, the benefit with this is that you have to really focus on what is being said and how it’s pronounced, and you learn to understand the language spoken, rather than just written as in the subtitles

watching documentaries

  • watching documentaries is a great way to learn how to understand the language spoken. the language used is natural and not simplified for people trying to learn it, but it has a naturally slow tempo which makes it easy to keep up with

listening to the radio

  • even if you don’t understand a single word of what is being said when starting, listening to the radio is always a great way to pick up pronunciation. after a while as you get better you’ll start recognizing words and sentences, and you start understanding more and more. listening to the radio is also good as you get to hear how native speakers actually talk, including slang, idioms, buffer noises and other things

listening to music

  • listening to music works in the same way as listening to the radio, but is often a lot more fun! you learn the pronunciation and can sing along. disney songs are usually quite simple and offer written lyrics, so i’d say that’s a good way to start!

reading is one of the most important things to do when learning a language, and has the added benefit of learning about the culture of the language if you read literature from that country (which i recommend you do). i recommend starting with children’s books and cartoons and then moving on to more advanced literature the better you get. you can go about reading in your target language in two ways

  • reading continuously without pausing and trying to understand the words you don’t know based on the context. it’s also good to go back and reread, if you do this chances are you’ll pick up things that you didn’t understand the first time
  • pausing and looking up every word you don’t recognize. doing this won’t really increase your ability to read in your target language, but it can be a good way to build up a vocabulary

writing a diary

writing in your target language is a good way to learn to think in your target language and to use it naturally. i write a diary in french every day, and it’s been incredibly rewarding! but make sure this isn’t your only source, as that could make your language sound quite alien and unnatural. i made a more detailed post about the benefits of writing a diary in your target language which you can find here x

chatting online

chatting with native speakers online is a good complement to writing a diary. it has the same effects of learning to think in the language and using it daily, but when chatting with someone else you’ll be corrected, which stops you from developing bad and unnatural habits in your target language. you’ll also see how the native speakers use the language and which formulations they use. there are two apps, that i know about, designed to let you talk to native speakers

  • HelloTalk
  • Tandem

they both work pretty much the same, you enter your native language and other languages that you may speak fluently, and which language you’d like to learn. then you’ll be matched with people who want to learn your language and who speaks the language that you want to learn

talking is the most essential, and hardest part of learning a language. i practice talking by repeating words from Duolingo and Babbel and reading out loud from books. if you’re using Tandem or HelloTalk you can also video chat and send audio messages back and forth. there’s always the classic way of practicing by talking in the shower or with your pet! the best way to learn how to speak in your target language though would be to go to the country where the language is spoken

i think the most important thing to think about when starting a new language is to emerge yourself in it as much as you possibly can, and making the language a natural part of your day

No, no, no. Not only that, but [New Year’s Day] was the quickest [song to record]. If you listen to the piano on that record, you can hear me moving around. You hear things clicking. Those are the “scratch takes” — we did that very quickly. It came out in that sort of goofy Hollywood version of how music is written, where it comes out of moments of inspiration. Part of the process is you do that [scratch take], and then you do it for real. But we just sat there: That’s the song. You want a song to sound like itself. You don’t want to get the perfect tune. You don’t want to get the absolute perfect vocal take or the perfect panning or compression. You just want it to sound like itself. You want to feel like you’re home within the song. […] It has nothing to do with genre, or how loud or soft it is. You just want the song to feel like itself. I don’t know what we would be thinking if we tried to f— with it. I’m so proud of it because, personally, I think it’s some sort of hint at the future.
—  Jack Antonoff on New Year’s Day sounding different than the rest of reputation, and if they ever thought about building it up to match the album

(death twdear cloud’s nine, very close friend to jonghyun and regular on blue night radio, competed on king of masked singer this last week. after being eliminated from the show during today’s broadcast she spoke of jonghyun during her talk after unveiling her identity.

nine: last year a friend that i really love left this world. after it, i could feel how life is meaningless and a bit, how to say …, i still can’t come back to my usual normal life. however, i get the feeling that i become alive as much as i sing and as much as i stand on stage. more than ever, i was desperate for this stage. i was really happy that, by coming on king of masked singer, i could let you listen to my music with only my voice. just like a habit, my friend asked me to sing his songs whenever. but, because i haven’t found the courage to do so, i couldn’t do it. but when the day comes where i’ll be able to sing my friend’s songs i believe that that’s the day that i’ll truly be able to send him off.

guest: you said that the last stage has a different meaning to you. thinking about the “i’m coming with you” lyrics, thinking of the friend who went to heaven first. your heart must hurt more thinking of how you want to be together with them. [caption: “i’m coming with you, i’m going with you, clinging tightly.”] probably that friend, too, when nine musters up the courage, he will see her singing image too. you’re a person who sings well, a singer who sings from her heart. you were great. hayleykiyoko: my debut album is finally coming out tomorrow…it’s a bizarre, overwhelming feeling of excitement, pride, anticipation…it’s so hard to find the right words to describe how it feels. So many people have helped along the way on this journey, whether it was just encouragement when I felt lost to simply answering an email. I would wake up everyday staring at the ceiling trying to create a plan. Go online, email people, usually with no responses. I’d take dance class just because I wanted to be ready if I ever got an opportunity to perform. I remember asking all of my friends in high school to please come to my show so it looked like I had fans, to make the 50-person requirement at the venue. Years later, I released a music video that hit 500k views for the first time in my life. All of the sudden I found a community of people who connected with me. To be able to share feelings that once made me feel so alone. Every time someone said no, or wouldn’t support, we kept going and made it happen ourselves. We kept climbing. No matter what. My dream has come true just by having a chance to get this music out there. I am so thankful for all of the steps along the way and for the all the people who believed in me and still do. I am so grateful. I encourage you to listen to it in order, from beginning to end, as that’s how it was intended. This album is for all of us.

video cr. Visual Glow

I wasn’t going to say anything about this rumor because I didn’t want to spread it and make it more likely for Jinnie to see but after watching this video I really need to let it all out.

First of all, I think Hyunjin is a really strong person. Sure, he can be sensitive to harsh comments, but who isn’t? The fact that he continues to try and smile after letting out his tears is so strong of him.

He first turns his back to his fans because he doesn’t want them to see him cry but his members flock towards him. None of them look too surprised, which gets me worried. Has he talked about these rumors with the rest of Stray Kids? Seeing as how close the boys are I wouldn’t be surprised if they talked about their problems and worries with each other. This thought is bitter-sweet because it shows fans how close they are but also tells us that they are having troubles and don’t want to show their fans.

The illogical rumors really need to stop. First of all, when would Hyunjin even have time to do any of the things the antis were saying. Like have you seen this boy practice? He literally has nothing on his mind other than improving himself. And have you seen how shy he gets on camera and his little speech stumble on music bank? This precious bean wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Part of me is happy that he could cry it out in front of his members and fans. Crying isn’t a sign of weakness. And the fans singing louder after seeing him cry is honestly so heartwarming. I hope whenever any of the 9 members are having a hard time, they can play “Grow Up,” listen to the lyrics they wrote, and understand that they’re doing well, and that we’re proud of them.
