How do you come up with different facial features for the characters you draw?(su,undertale, ect) Most of the characters I draw end up having the same face.
I’m not very good at it either, but basically, you’re supposed to start with a shape, and adapt the features to it. I’m gonna use Vriska for this example:
It’s three similar expressions, but stretching the shape of her face and adjusting her eyes, nose and mouth, she kinda gives three different vibes. And honestly, that’s basically it to me. Just adjusting everything until it looks good.
The facial features I draw are usually very easy, and it’s mostly things I’ve seen around with my own touch to them. I drew these off the top of my head:
I made it sound like I know what I’m doing but I actually don’t hope this helped though!!!
Bee, I have a rly hard time figuring out my characters' features it's like everytime I draw them they look different. it's even worse when drawing fan art because there are so many different takes on a character and I end up trying to smush all the different styles together and end up just feeling disappointed with my own style. How do you settle on drawing a charcter's features and characteristics?
OMFG I swear I was lamenting about this like… yesterday? -checks sketchbook- ok it was sunday BUT ANYWAY…
comin’ from an anime style background gave me this complex hardcore, and it still shows.. hence my self-proclaimed “the queen bee of style flux” title. im sure everyone that follows my art has noticed by now lmao
there really is no easy way out of this except practicing your tuckus off. like, really… for every character you make, you have to draw them a lot. i mean… that’s what i have to do? draw them at different angles, with different emotions… sometimes details change as the oc grows with you and your style- which is exciting and also HECKA frustrating.
like, lets take a look at the last 2 years of nay’s face startin with 2014
theres barely any real sense of consistency here overall, which left me feeling a little unsatisfied. I consider these proportions a “default bishoujo” face and most of my ocs of this archetype start out with this general face. mind you, archetypes are OK- starting with a base mold is natural, it’s what grows out of it that makes it really interesting and unique.
so then 2015 happened:
which is super recently if you think about it? these are all dated halfway into 2015, too. it’s a lot of trial and error, but the thing that really started helping me out (other than nafisah’s gorgeous imaginings of nay’s flattering face) was to focus on her most prominent features, or traits i wanted to make the core part of her face. in nay’s case, it’s her half circle “judging you” stare (that can be very sexy but is usually judgmental), her button (rabbit) nose, and her 24/7 whitegirl ducklips- but pushin’ them all to have more “Babydoll with a big forehead” proportions.
(could i possibly exaggerate it any more than super chibi style??)
and i totally feel you about fanart. i think my style merged with the steven universe style when i do SU fanart, and I wanna do mewmew style when I draw mews, and the sailor moon proportions come in when I do magical girls, etc etc.. it’s all instinctive to a point. tbh i guess that’s just a matter of picking one style and sticking to it, like really consciously committing if you want a certain look.
something that might help you out for general stuff:
You could also try to find them faceclaims / real face models, because they sometimes give the right feeling / direction of features. I mean, I exaggerate the heck out of them, but still:
(LMFAO THIS LOOKS LIKE AN IRL AGE MEME… OOPS… ) I’ve had so much fun playing with the facemorphthing website, taking a few people whose features that really struck me and putting them in a genetic blender. }:33
but at the very very least, just try drawing their most prominent features, even like- free floating eyeballs and mouth doodles on a page, just get familiar with the symbols and traits that make them feel like them. (which is legit what I did on sunday actually) That’s the coolest part about ocs, they’re like an infinite grab bag of different stuff. and just keep drawing those features and stick with them as long as it feels right to because that’s the #1 way any design gets more stable, natural and organic.
and this is advice i should take myself… lmao -sweats furiously-
Up to now I still don’t know what title to give Stiles.
But, I think guardian sounds about right. >w<
Also… All the photos of Dylan I went through. It was glorious and I’m a bit anxious if I got his profile right. XD BECAUSE I LOOK AT OTHER AMAZING TW ARTISTS AND I JUST *EXPLODES* how do you even draw their facial features perfectly eeeeh!
OH. I gave him the Druidic symbol “Shield Knot” because it stands for protection. Needless to say, Stiles is about staying strong all throughout everything with his friends and everyone he loves. >w<
ANYWAY! This is available for prints! But only friends from my country can get them because I have no idea how to sell them to other countries.
You can send me a message if you want a print! It’s on a 5 x 7 matte photo paper and it would be nice if we met up irl. (●´□`)♡
