So, according to my textbook, Toph probably has a smaller than normal visual cortex, with some of those neurons acting as intermodel neurons by receiving auditory and tactile imput. At the same time, those areas of her brain that usually receive auditory, and tactile imput would get significantly larger. That makes a lot of sense, especially when you think about how real life people who are blind rely more on touch and sound.
I also wonder if this can also help explain some blind people’s ability to use echo location, because that seems to make some sense as well.
On an unrelated note, when I was reading about PTSD last year, I learned about hypocampal damage and misguided neurons, which could apply to Korra. I also concluded that, if the development of mental health related studies in the Avatar wotld looks anything like mental health related studies in our world, it’s going to be filled with a lot of “Oh, that wasn’t really trauma. The soldiers in [War A] were just more tough than those in [War B]” and a lot of denial and failure to recognize the history of trauma, as well as the consistency of its symptoms.
Being a Master’s candidate in a psych program while also being a huge Avatar fan is fun!
