“I always wanted to be a mental health therapist. Ever since high school, I’ve enjoyed encouraging people and giving them hope. But I lost my way. I got caught in a world of addiction. I lost ten years of my life to drugs. I stopped when I became pregnant with my child, but by that time it was too late to go back to school. I started working as an office manager. I never completely lost my dream. But I just put it on a shelf for thirty years. Then five years ago I to…ok it off the shelf. I heard a lady in my choir talking about how she enrolled in community college. I drove there the very next day. I was so nervous when I filled out the application. I was so nervous the first day of class. All the old voices were telling me: ‘You never finish anything.’ But I said ‘fuck you’ to the old voices. And I started getting A’s. On my first test, I got the only perfect score in the class. I graduated at the age of 50. I got my Masters at 55. And just last night I completed a mental health first aid course. I’m so close now. There’s still fear there. I used to be afraid of it never happening. Now I’m afraid of it happening. The old voices try to come back sometimes. They tell me: ‘You can rest,’ or ‘You’ve earned a break.’ But I’m not stopping this time. Somebody out there is waiting for me to finish because they need my help.“
The above are the first half of the slides I presented at GeekGirlCon (along with some annotations to explain things I only said out loud :) ) – for the second half, read more below the cut. I’ll also be sharing the slides from the other presenters here, too, as they’re posted!
The gender representation work is part of a longer analysis that I will be posting in full soon!
Beneath the cut are also a few additional slides that I would have presented with a bit more time – several of which address things that came up in the question session. Edit: warning for some mature text content in the extra slides.
Edit 2: Also, if you want more notes about when and how I collected this data (e.g., some of the data in the first section is a couple years old), you want clearer text/images, or you want to get at the raw data, check out the links in the speakers notes in my Google Slides!
…And the extra slides (content warning for mature themes in text):
The trial, expected to last nine days, has drawn fans of Ms. Swift. Ed Lee, a 50-year-old graphic artist from Seattle, took time from visiting relatives in Colorado to bring his 10-year-old daughter to a trial he said demonstrates lesson he tries to teach her.
“I’ve had many conversations with her as I walk her to school,” Mr. Lee said. “I tell her: ‘You’re an alpha. I want you to know how to pull the claws out when you need them. Because you’re going to need them.
This is the Bop. The Bop is a type of social dance. Dance is a language, and social dance is an expression that emerges from a community. A social dance isn’t choreographed by any one person. It can’t be traced to any one moment. Each dance has steps that everyone can agree on, but it’s about the individual and their creative identity Because of that, social dances bubble up, they change, and they spread like wildfire. They are as old as our remembered history.
In African-American social dances, we see over 200 years of how African and African-American traditions influenced our history. The present always contains the past. And the past shapes who we are and who we will be.
Now, social dance is about community and connection; if you knew the steps, it meant you belonged to a group. But what if it becomes a worldwide craze? Enter the Twist.
It’s no surprise that the Twist can be traced back to the 19th century, brought to America from the Congo during slavery. But in the late ‘50s, right before the Civil Rights Movement, the Twist is popularized by Chubby Checker and Dick Clark. Suddenly, everybody’s doing the Twist: white teenagers, kids in Latin America, making its way into songs and movies. Through social dance, the boundaries between groups become blurred.
The story continues in the 1980s and '90s. Along with the emergence of hip-hop, African-American social dance took on even more visibility, borrowing from its long past, shaping culture and being shaped by it. Today, these dances continue to evolve, grow and spread.
Why do we dance? To move, to let loose, to express.
Why do we dance together? To heal, to remember, to say: “We speak a common language. We exist and we are free.”
Growing up, I went to a very old school. It was built in the early 1900s, and they just so happened to use this stuff that can supposedly give you lung cancer. They eventually shut the school down because of this stuff. Flash forward about 50 years, and because of this stuff I have trouble breathing, I don’t know how I have survived this long, honestly. I just try to breathe asbestos I can..

I always thought it was funny that your player character in Pokemon is 10 years old. Like, yeah, they’re “anime ten” where they look at least 18 yadda yadda, but they’re still ten.
Imagine the people in the Pokemon League. These are fully grown adults, right? They’ve trained their entire lives to be the best trainers in their country. They’re the best of the best. And then a ten year old walks in. A high and mighty four foot tall ten year old with a big smile on their face walks in. They’ve never even seen a tity. They don’t know where babies come from. They’re ten.
How did this ten year old get in to your arena? Did they wander in here by mistake? They say they’re here to battle you. Aww, how cute. This kid wants to fight the big league trainers, so they snuck in to fight you. That’s cute and funny. You’ll tell the others about this next lunch break. You decide to humor the kid and accept their challenge. You toss out your level 50 Tyranitar. You and this Pokemon have spent decades together, you trained for ages to get it to Level 50. You’re the best trainer in the country.
The kid reaches on their belt and tosses a Master Ball. Wait, what? A Master Ball? How did that kid get a Master Ball? Out of the master ball pops…
God popped out of the Master Ball.
The very same God Pokemon that controls the flow of space, that you go to church and pray to every Sunday.
This ten year old kid just pulled out a Master Ball and threw God at you. God is, in fact, Level 73.
God shoots Hyper Beam at your life-long partner Tyranitar, causing it to evaporate in to dust. He’s fainted in one hit. The kid yawns.
The kid wipes your entire party of Pokemon, the Pokemon you spent most of your adult life training and caring for. You are stunned. You ask the trainer how long they’ve been doing this. They say “I started a couple of days ago.”
A lot of people use the Trident to pit the Stark sisters against each other. Both Arya and Sansa made mistakes on that day and innocent lives were lost, but ultimately Joffrey is the one to blame for his actions. Both girls were in an extremely tense situation that they were not equipped to handle by themselves. What is more important is that Arya and Sansa have both learned from their experience and this is shown after Ned’s death.
At the trident, Sansa is afraid and tells Arya to stay out of it. She doesn’t know what to do, so she does nothing, allowing Joffrey to cut Mycah rather than intervening. Flash forward to A Clash of Kings when Joffrey is ordering the death of Ser Dontos. Sansa impulsively says he can’t and when she is almost faced with Joffrey’s wrath, recovers by stroking his ego and successfully persuades Joffrey to make Ser Dontos a fool instead of killing him. Sansa is able to bravely maneuver the situation in a way that she was not able to at the Trident and saves an innocent life.
Arya is also afraid at the Trident, mostly for Mycah. No one is listening when she tells Joffrey to stop and she reacts by hitting him, starting a fight where Nymeria comes to her rescue by attacking Joffrey. Flash forward to A Clash of Kings when Arya is at Harrenhal and wants to free the prionser northmen. Like with Mycah, Arya seeks justice for northerners and people connected to her family, but knows she can’t just try to attack the guards. Instead, she outsmarts Jaqen H’ghar and he helps her free the prisoners. Arya is able to think strategically to achieve this outcome without touching a single sword, wooden or otherwise.
It’s easy to pick apart how the Trident incident could have been prevented and point fingers, but it’s more important to see how far both girls have come. Since the Trident incident, Arya and Sansa have learned how to manage extreme situations and can even control them. They have come from opposite sides of the flight/fight spectrum and, while still having their own strengths and weaknesses, are both far better centred.
I think any dissatisfaction I have with the Samurai Jack finale is that Jack didn’t learn anything. The series started out with him already being perfect. Becoming a master of all trades with a will of iron and unfaltering moral code was a montage in the prologue.
He didn’t grow, he didn’t change, he had no character arc except for season 5 where he overcame ennui that came about offscreen and was not intrinsic to his character. Jack’s superstitiousness and sense of traditionalism where he assumed cars and cities were Aku’s creations, and Jack’s single-minded belief that he NEEDED to get back to the past that he held even after 50 long years, those were things that could have been part of his grander quest of self. A man from medieval Japan stuck up his nose at modern society, became depressed that he was stuck there, and went home without a second of hesitation. It was a riveting tale all things considered, but Jack didn’t grow as a person. He never sought knowledge that wasn’t known in his time, and he saw no value in this world he spent decades in and amassed a cult following of allies in. And while he resisted change and adaptation at all costs,
His quest lasted 50 years. When you think about it, he’s lived his entire life as a wanderer in the badlands who stopped at the occasional settlement of humans being menaced by a robot. How do you go back from that? It’s not like he spent his whole youth in ancient Japan either, his globetrotting mission to become an Aku-fighting warrior began when he was 8. He was incredibly far-removed from the “home” he idolized. Being plopped back into there should have led to just as much culture shock as when he was flung into the future. It’s just as the little old man from his spirit journey to regain his sword said, his tea tasted awful. He followed the tea ceremony to the letter, but it still turned out terrible. His inner turmoil was that he hated the future and felt everything about the world he was in went against his raison d’etre. So he overcame this turmoil not by learning to accept his circumstances and see past his prejudices to attain inner peace, but by telling a personification of his anger to shut up. And this was apparently good enough for the pantheon of gods to deem him worthy of the enchanted katana again. Ashi had more significant character development than Jack, which really adds fuel to the fire of why it sucks that she died for Jack to feel one last bout of angst.
His whole life- from the age of 8 to the age of 70ish- was shaped by the mission to slay Aku. He himself needed to heal and return to a semblance of normalcy just as much as the world at large did. But did he stay in the future to help rebuild society so his spirit and the world could both mend and move on from the past into a better future? Nope, there was a deux ex machina where Ashi had Aku’s full array of powers including time portals. He took the easy way out, which is something he avoided doing in the first season with the blind archers, and something that defied the prophecy of The Guardian’s time portal. He completed his mission, but it was cheap and unfulfilling. The final battle between Jack and Aku that we waited 17 years for lasted about one minute.
So This is like, our second game of DND most of us have played. our party is headed to town as part of some celebration or something, and we go by this lake and we talk to this old man who tells us that “for the past months, every night right about now, animals go into this lake and never come out” and at the point he said that, our tri-keen bard had gone into the water Water Elemental(OOC): Okay we have to get (Bards name) out of there Pretty much everyone else: Yeah i agree
So our paladin tried to yell at her and rolled a 2. I try to fire a warning shot but it never happened. so she went under. and while that was happening, a massive moose came up from behind us and was slowly walking towards the lake. our druid tries to talk to animals, but he fails.
Rouge (ME): “I roll to use my levitating piece of glowing fabric and pretend its like a ghost to ward away the Deer”
DM: “…Roll deception”
I roll a 16. unfortunately it doesn’t work because the deer is hypnotized or something
so eventually after multiple attempts to get the deer to stop, it has two feet in the water, and our bard pops out alive and well telepathically holding a green ball above her. the deer sees it and his eyes are like, red, and it turns towards where are bard is swimming back to
Elemental: “I roll to create a ball of water around the orb
He rolls a 11 and a thin ball of water is formed around the orb. hiding it from view causing the deer to become lucid. so our druid tries to talk to it again
Druid: “What are you doing, why are you chasing this green orb?”
Deer: (IN PERFECT COMMON): “wh-what, where am I!?”
and while this is going on, my rouge gets the brightest idea ever (sarcasm)
Me: “I roll to shoot the orb with my shortbow” Paladin (OOC): “woah woah, are you sure cause i think your damage is gonna like, get returned to you by 20”
Me: “I’ll just dodge it”
Paladin (OOC) : “Okay, well im going to step away from you”
Me: “alright, now, I roll to just shoot the damn orb” DM: “*sign* roll for it”
I pass the roll
DM: so you shoot the orb, your arrow passes through the water bubble and hits the orb shattering it, it launches out a wave of 50 toxic damage, the water bubble absorbs 10, roll dexterity saving throw”
Everyone passes except the bard and the deer
DM: “so (Bard name) and the deer are just obliterated, their skeletons are just, sizzling”
Bard(OOC): “are you kidding me? How was i supposed to dodge that!?”
But the best part, is when we rolled our Dex saving throws, the old man, this 95 year old, rolls a NINETEEN! Meanwhile, me, the ROUGE, barely manages to dodge it with a 13, this nonagenarian rolls a 19! I think the DM said it best
DM: “so the Old Man, this 95 year old, rolls higher than all of you, so he does this like, super athletic maneuver like flips and shit”
Elemental (OOC): “just like, he takes the bench with him” Me: “Im just imagining the old dude pulling off some fucking Revenge of the Sith shit”
we ran out of time after that but were going to be continuing a day from when i submit this
Do y’all really think Janet Jackson is a gold digger?
If you pay any sort of attention to pop culture (especially Black pop culture) you’ve probably already heard the big news that Janet Jackson is divorcing her third husband. Most people between the ages of 35 and 60 (and those of us who had older siblings) have at least some passing relationship with the Jacksons, so a Janet Jackson divorce just after having a baby is kind of a big deal as far as celebrity news goes. And how do most of us handle celebrity news? We speculate and make jokes! It looks like the most popular opinion is that Janet waited five years for the divorce so she could cash out.
I made a joke about it too because I thought it was funny, but that was before I realized that was the going opinion out here on the Internet.
Y'all. Janet Jackson is worth almost $200 million by herself. She doesn’t need any more money. As for receiving $500 million in a divorce – why would Wissam do that to his fortune? A prenup is there to protect your assets, not give half of them away. I can’t see these filthy rich people with all the legal advice in the world going into an arrangement where she would get half of his fortune after just five years of marriage.
I think it’s far more likely that they were just incompatible and she stuck it out long enough to have a baby. Imagine you’re Janet and you’ve always wanted a child. You’re getting close to 50-years-old and time is definitely running out on having a healthy baby, and now you have this guy with a lot of great qualities. He’s handsome, he’s driven, he’s funny, he’s intelligent, (I don’t know this man, I’m just making up things you might see as a positive in the father of your child) and you love him. You don’t really want to convert to Islam, but you’re not all that tied to being Jehovah’s Witness anymore (I don’t know what Janet is at this point, but that’s how she grew up) and it seems like a minor trade-off for this guy you love. And then it’s gets old. You don’t want to cover up all the time. You’re Janet Jackson! One of the biggest sex symbols of all time and you had to go on tour fully covered from neck to ankle.
I think Janet had her baby, tried one more time to work it out with Wissam and make the marriage work, and then her issues with him were magnified because she now has a son to think about. Nobody worth $200 million plans a divorce a year in advance (which is what would’ve had to have happened with the timing of her pregnancy) just for a bigger settlement. Janet always seemed to me like she desperately wanted the perfect husband and perfect child to have the perfect family life, so I just feel sad for her going into her third divorce.
PLEASE delet any fanart i have sent you while bendy was in jail my art looks like shit
[I will if you really want me to, however it is NOT shit!!! (please comment or send a message if you do want me to delete it) I reblogged it because I liked it! Don’t compare your art to others, it won’t get you anywhere. Take inspiration from other people’s art and learn from it. We’ve all got different backgrounds, experience levels and time we can dedicate to art, its what makes each person’s art unique and amazing! The thing about art is it’s a life long craft. You have to put in the work, and draw the things you love, be proud of what you’ve done and how far you’ve come. Watching artist evolution is one of my favourite things, seeing someone hone their style and gain new skills.
Try not to be so hard on yourself when you see others who have great art skills. You never know, that person might be 50 years old, and so have so many more years experience to master their craft. Even if they’re the same age as you, your circumstances and theirs could be completely different. You’ll look back at what you’ve done and cringe, maybe (I know I do) but that just means you’re improving, and that you’re laying the foundation of your talent. Because, art is not a magical talent that people are born with, its hours, hundreds of thousands of hours of work.
So…I might delete this waffly bullshit later, but its true! Comparison is the thief of joy! So here’s some advice from the pudgy cat, Bendy ]
“Don’t compere your art! Imagine your art is pizza, someone else’s art is ice-cream. Do you hate pizza just because ice cream is really good? No! They’re both fucking delicious, just different! What I’m saying is…I’m hungry. Anyway you gotta WORK HARD! Happiness optional. Also if you want money, a happy life, and a functional wrist and shoulder, don’t work in animation…”
