The House That Dippy Built

Carnegie Museum of Natural History under construction.

Once back in Pittsburgh, scientists worked to free the fossils from the rock and reconstruct Dippy’s skeleton.

In 1901, paleontologists realized they had discovered a new species of dinosaur and named it Diplodocus carnegii to recognize Carnegie’s support.

At the time of Dippy’s discovery, there was simply no room for a huge dinosaur at Carnegie’s institution. Carnegie was not deterred. A new wing that featured Dippy as its centerpiece was added.

Dippy settled into his permanent home in 1907 as the first dinosaur in the new Dinosaur Hall. By the time the museum’s expansion was finished, the people of Pittsburgh called the museum “The House That Dippy Built.”

This is the second in a three-part blog series about Diplodocus carnegii, aka Dippy. We are celebrating all things Dippy as we launch our new logo featuring his silhouette. Share your own Dippy photos and stories using #newdippylogo.

“Would the world be a better place if people never felt guilty? You see the world as it is, and you see the world as it could be. What you don’t see is what everybody else sees, the giant gaping chasm in between. You’re not happy unless things are just right. Which means two things; you’re good at what you do, and you’ll never be happy.”

Night Vale is in a three-year loop, the reset being Cecil’s death at the Opera House. Both Earl and Carlos are trying to break the loop.

Carlos has been trying to break it for a decade, maybe more, but he never manages to save Cecil. He wanted Cecil to move to the Desert so Cecil wouldn’t be there the night of the opening, but he was too late to convince Cecil to get out before the opening.

Earl has been trying to break it since he came back by convincing Cecil there’s something wrong with time – how they’re still so young after an entire century – but Cecil keeps brushing it off. He planted the tapes in [Best Of?] to convince Cecil of the problem, but Cecil was on vacation and didn’t hear the tapes.

Headcanon that after Cecil and Carlos move in together Carlos doesn’t buy Cecil flowers as much as he did solely for the fact that he realized Cecil is one of those people that keeps flowers long after they’re dead and dry and doesn’t like to throw them out so there are vases and Erlenmeyer flasks scattered all over the house with dry dead flowers.

Why exactly do you need chloroform at 2AM?

If Darcy could put “besties with Black Widow” on her resume, she would. Though, she was pretty sure it would land her somewhere around the 50/50 mark on a scale of ‘would help her get a job’ and ‘would get her blacklisted from ever applying for a job in the general vicinity of said place again.’ Eh. She would still proudly declare herself a friend of Natasha’s. Which was why she was not freaking out that the super spy was sleuthing around the medical office, which conveniently happened to be down the hall from Jane’s lab.
