house council

anonymous asked:

Hey, dumb American question here. Every UK person I have ever met hates Margaret Thatcher. Why? What terrible thing did she do to piss off that many people for so long?

Where do I fucking start?

So, Thatcher was the bane of the working classes, and much of what she did still has repercussions to this day. So, in no particular order, just in the order I remember them, here are some things she did that pissed us off -

• In 1989 she introduced this thing called the “Community Charge” but which everyone calls the “Poll Tax” which replaced an older system in which your tax payment was based on the rental value of your home. This new tax meant that people living in one bedroom flats would pay the same as a billionaire living in a mansion. Obviously, the rich loved it, everyone else… not so much. So there were riots (video of news about the riots) - There were lots of riots in the Thatcher years, and they were all notable for the extreme levels of police brutality.

(photo, poll tax protest in Trafalgar Square, 1990)

• Then there was her war on industry. There was a lot of inflation when she came to power, so she instituted anti-inflationary measures. All well and good… except not the way she did it. She closed many government controlled industries, most famously steel and coal. The amount spent on public industries dropped by 38% under Thatcher. The coal miners went on strike, for almost a year, but in the end, the pits were still closed, and 64,000 people lost their jobs. Unemployment rates soared in industrial areas, and inequality between these (generally northern or welsh) areas and the rest of the UK is still there. During the strike there were numerous violent clashes with the police at picket lines which were widely televised. As a memoir from one miner attests: “ I saw a police officer with a fire extinguisher in his hand, bashing a lad in the back. I tried to get closer to note down the officer’s number but they were wearing black boilersuits with no numbers. The next thing I knew, a police officer struck me from behind. I was coming in and out of consciousness as I was dragged across the road into an alleyway. They blocked off the alley and beat another lad and me with sticks until I was unconscious.” (I can’t post the whole thing it’s too long, but read it in the Guardian) Images such as this swept the country, turning many people against Thatcher -

And after it was all over people felt Thatcher had lied, saying she wanted to close only 20 pits, when in the end, 75 were closed down.

• Inequality soared whilst she was prime minister. There is a thing called the gini coefficient, it is the most common method of measuring inequality. Under gini, a score of one would be a completely unequal society; zero would be completely equal. Britain’s gini score went up from 0.253 to 0.339 by the time Thatcher resigned.

• During her time as prime minister the notorious ‘Section 28′ was published. It stated: A local authority shall not (a) intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality; (b) promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship. - Section 28 wasn’t repealed until 2003.

• She introduced the Right To Buy scheme, which allowed people to buy their council houses for a very low price, which, at first glance, seems like a great idea, allowing people who normally wouldn’t be able to afford their own home to have one - however, loads of people have entered the scheme and now we have far too little social housing, meaning there has been a sharp rise in homelessness.

• The Battle of the Beanfield was a clash between hippies and police near Stonehenge in 1985. 1300 police officers converged on a convoy of 600 new age travellers who were heading to Stonehenge to set up a free festival in violation of a high court order. Again, there was an insane amount of police brutality, and 16 travellers were hospitalised, 573 people were arrested (one of the biggest mass arrests in UK history) - “Pregnant women were clubbed with truncheons, as were those holding babies. The journalist Nick Davies, then working for The Observer, saw the violence. ‘They were like flies around rotten meat,’ he wrote, ‘and there was no question of trying to make a lawful arrest. They crawled all over, truncheons flailing, hitting anybody they could reach. It was extremely violent and very sickening.’” (source) - Once everyone was arrested, the empty vehicles, which were in many cases the only homes the travellers had “were then systematically smashed to pieces and several were set on fire. Seven healthy dogs belonging to the Travellers were put down by officers from the RSPCA.” (source same as above)

Most of the charges were dismissed in court after Lord Cardigan, who had tagged along with them to see what would happen, testified on behalf of the travellers against the police.

• Her removal of Irish dissidents right to be placed in a category that essentially made them political prisoners instead of merely criminals led to a hunger strike that ended in 10 deaths, including that of Bobby Sands, who was elected from his prison cell, reflecting the immense national, and international support for Irish nationalists. Thatchers lack of sympathy, or even empathy led to her becoming even more of a hate figure.

• She presided over a rapid deregulation of the banks, which ultimately led to much of the problems during britains 2007-2012 financial crash many years later.

• She took free milk from school children, which, though not as serious as anything else listed here, directly affected every child in the UK and was very unpopular, leading her to get the nickname “Maggie Thatcher, Milk Snatcher”, which is still used today.

• Oh… and she supported Apartheid and called Mandela a terrorist.

This is nowhere near everything she’s done that pisses people off, but I hope it goes some way to explaining why when she died “ding dong the witch is dead” became number one in the UK charts, people partied in the streets, and people protested her (State funded) funeral. She is a decisive figure, some people in the UK do actually love her. I do not. She decimated the UK’s industrial heartland, she caused mass unemployment and the destruction of much of working class culture, she was cavalier in her financial policies and increased inequality by staggering levels, she approved serious police brutality and attempted to destroy the culture of unions in this country.  I fundamentally disagree with all she stood for and it angers me that her mistakes are still affecting this country and the people who live in it. And I am VERY angry that the current government are spending £50 million on a museum about her.

anonymous asked:

hey you're blog is amazing!! i wanted to stop by to ask you if you have any headcanons for pregnant/parents kanej? (highly unlikely but let's pretend)

Oh BOY HAVE I GOT A LIST FOR YOU

  • They plan on adoption. They both have no sexual interest in each other, and Kaz secretly wants to save a kid from going down what he experienced (exactly the same reason why he took Wylan under his wing).
  • And of course, because they’re not the conventional pair, they adopt one by accident. They storm a Council of Tides meeting and find a Shu servant girl that’s about seven years old. Inej visits one of the Council member’s houses and gives him a nice chat threat about how he’s never going to partake in child labor again.
  • When Kaz asks her for her name and her parents, she replies that she never had any parents, and she only knew her first name: Meigui.
  • Kaz introduces her to the gang, and when she asks about what he does, he answers that he’s a businessman. He doesn’t make her part of the gang because Inej would skewer him.
  • Nina, Wylan, and Jesper think she’s adorable and spoil her rotten with their respective skillsets. Matthias turns into the awkward uncle that’s actually a big sweetheart when it comes to his niece. Meigui and Kuwei get along famously, and they both love to sit back and sip tea while watching drama unfold. (oftentimes it’s drama they caused rip @ Dregs)
  • She goes to school and gets tutored at the university district, to Jesper’s delight. (“I’ve set an example!” / “Jesper, you dropped out, that’s not exactly an example she should follow.” / “Semantics.”)
  • Meigui doesn’t make it known that she has kick ass Barrel parents, because she’s noticed that they react a little strangely when she calls them mother or father. So she stays silent about who her parents are, assuming that they didn’t want everyone to know and thus she respects their privacy.
  • It gets out anyway because nothing stays a secret in the Barrel, and the kids in school basically beg her to tell them what’s like to have the great Kaz Brekker as a father.
  • “Who, Da? He goes into business, loves Ma, instills fear in other men with his name. He’s not really that different from yours.”
  • She’s not that good at magic tricks, but she’s good at figuring them out, to Kaz’s surprise. Her insight makes her quick to catch on to Kaz’s persuasive tactics, and she soon gets allowed to sit and talk at business meetings that only house the toughest and the slyest Barrel gang members. When the other gangs see Meigui at Kaz’s side, they think she’s a servant, but as soon as she opens her mouth, their eyes pop out of their heads. Kaz definitely doesn’t smirk. She quickly becomes Kaz’s confidant in tactics and dealing with the other gangs.
  • “She asked to be there, Inej. A couple more years, and she could hold her own against any merchant in these harbors.”
  • “Kaz, she’s eight and a half.”
  • “And by nine she’ll be able to take down each member of the Council of Merchants in verbal debate.”
  • Inej teaches her acrobatic skills, to Meigui’s delight. Kaz nearly has a heart attack when he sees the girl on the roof of the Slat for the first time. Talking with Inej doesn’t change anything. (“You taught her how to manipulate people. At least rooftops won’t break her innocence.”)
  • The girl soon says to anyone around her that Inej taught her to fly. It’s so precious that Kaz never gets to chastising her about the Slat roof incident, or any other rooftop sessions. He does keep a very close eye on the rooftops of Ketterdam now, though.
  • On her ninth birthday, some snot-nosed son of a rich mercher says to her, “Do you honestly think your parents are really yours? You’re Shu, your da’s Kerch, and your ma’s Suli. They probably picked you up out of the bottom of the harbor and killed your real par—”
  • No one hears the rest of the sentence because Meigui smashes her fist into the boy’s face.  When asked why she did it, she says, “He didn’t look like he spoke a language of courtesy, so I chose one of violence to get my message through.”
  • Inej and Kaz can’t help but smile even though they chastise her for using fists instead of telling one of them first.  Inej has to convince Kaz not to hunt down the bully
  • And when Meigui starts to learn about the false alarm of the Queen Anne’s Plague in her class, she asks Kaz and Inej one night to tell her what they did to cause that, because she knows that they’re always around whenever Ketterdam makes history.
  • Kaz and Inej exchange glances before Inej smiles, sits next to Meigui, and starts telling her a story.
  • “Kaz Brekker didn’t need a reason. Those were the words whispered on the streets of Ketterdam, in the taverns and coffeehouses, in the dark and bleeding alleys…”
  • Kaz doesn’t move from his desk and continues to work, but listens to Inej and Meigui talk into the night with a ghost of a smile on his lips.
help a disabled gay trans guy not starve/end up on the street

hi, i’m zack and i’m still the legal definition of homeless, as i do not have a lease rn and my housing situation is insecure because i can’t afford the rent for the room i’m staying in. i’m trying to fix these things, but it’s gonna take some time. until then, i am dependent on my ex for money and that’s not a state i want to be in.

i need money for pots and pans and dishes, because the ones in this apartment are in an unusable state. further, i need money for food and transport. i’ve got food for the time being, but i can’t cook it, because the kitchen is in an awful state and there’s mould growing in the microwave (and the cooker doesn’t quite work).

basically i’m a little bit fucked? i could use money to tide me over until i can get council housing or a room in a less fucked up apartment and also benefits/PIP/whatever it is i’m entitled to.

my paypal is isakgrozny@gmail.com.

thank you so so much and if you can’t donate, please reblog?

asian kaz

Because I can, and because Kim Woo Bin’s still my #1 Kaz.

  • The reason Kaz doesn’t directly go up in the ranks of the Dregs? He doesn’t look like the rest of the recruits. But Kaz uses this to his advantage; he pretends not to understand Kerch for a whole year before Per Haskell and his cronies find out. They’ve been speaking in Kerch so Kaz won’t understand them, but once he starts speaking fluently as any other Ketterdam boy, they feel a jolt of unease at the discovery of how Kaz overheard and understood every one of their conversations.
  • The first time another boy tells him to go back to Shu Han, Kaz gets his gloves stained with blood for the first time. Since then, no one in the Dregs questions his genealogy.
  • Word about the Shu Kerch boy with the devil’s blood spreads across Ketterdam. One day, Heleen Van Houden pays a visit to Per Haskell, offering Kaz a position at the Menagerie and promising a much more lavish and comfortable life than the streets, since he has an “exotic factor”. Kaz looks at her coldly, and then says, “I’d rather die on the streets than suffocate in the sheets with everyone pretending not to notice, like your Zemeni girl did the other day.”
  • This memory pops up in his head when he sees Inej run her thumb over her Menagerie tattoo.
  • Speaking of Inej, she’s the only one who doesn’t ask about his ambiguous ethnicity, like it isn’t important to her. He respects her greatly for that.
  • Kaz sticks out as the only biracial gang leader in Ketterdam. Every new gang member wonders about this, but they all keep silent because they value their lives. Unbeknownst to them, Kaz doesn’t even know why he looks so much like the Shu, but he suspects he inherited from his mother, who’s been absent from his life since his birth.
  • When the gang springs Matthias from Hellgate, Matthias has even more misgivings about Kaz, since he presumes that Kaz plans to give Bo Yul-Bayur back to the Shu. Kaz shuts down these thoughts with a simple brawl that leaves Matthias sprawled out on the floor.
  • Unlike Inej, Jesper asks about his Shu origins. Before he can stop himself, Kaz answers shortly: “My mother.”
  • He can’t find himself to lie to Jesper about this, for some reason. But when Kaz sees an understanding gleam in Jesper’s eyes, he’s glad he didn’t lie.
  • Kaz runs into a Shu servant girl when he attempts to break into a Council member’s house for the first time. She takes one look at him and just glides on by. To Kaz’s surprise, he soon realizes that the Shu servants and help that serve corrupt individuals will willingly pretend he’s not in their masters’/mistresses houses. Some even become his inside spies.
  • After the chaos of Crooked Kingdom, the Shu in Ketterdam get accused of working with the Shu attackers that flew in and bombed the city in search for Grisha. Kaz steps in and acts as the voice of the Shu Kerch, confirming that none of the Shu knew about the attack and never planned something so drastic.
  • Whenever the Shu come to Ketterdam for a crucial business venture post CK, Kaz acts as a mediator between the Kerch and Shu delegations. Everything goes four times faster because Kaz is a better businessman than any self-respecting merch on the two delegations.
  • He doesn’t speak Shu at all. Kuwei tries to get him to speak it once, but fails miserably. Despite this, Kuwei and Kaz get along better than people think. When Kuwei comes back and joins in on a heist, he and Kaz pretend to be lost Shu boys who don’t speak Kerch. It works every time.

It starts at a party.

You’re dancing with your friends, beer in hand, hair held back with a headband, gold paint swiped down your temple, curling around your cheekbones.

Those damned cheekbones and that damned jawline. A bone structure carved from history. You are catastrophically beautiful.

Marlene waves at you; she tells me you’re old family friends. Your chin lifts, corners of your mouth lifting to reveal lines of perfect teeth. Her hands grabs mine and she’s weaving us through the crowds of hot bodies.

“Marls.” You say, pulling her into a hug and kissing her cheek. She screws up her face.

“Boundaries, Potter.”

You smirk at me. “She loves me really.” She scoffs but there is sunlight glinting in her smile.

The Mirror has obtained a copy of Labour's draft manifesto. Here's what's in it
The 43-page draft contains landmark promises on the NHS, social care, education and housing
By Jack Blanchard

Labour will pledge to re-nationalise Britain’s energy industry, railways and Royal Mail in its most left-wing election manifesto in a generation.

The Mirror has obtained a leaked version of the party’s entire draft manifesto, containing landmark promises of £6billion-a-year extra for the NHS and £1.6billion-a-year for social care.

University tuition fees will be abolished entirely, and town halls ordered to build 100,000 new council houses a year under a new Department for Housing.

Thousands of homes will be offered to rough sleepers, and private rent hikes capped at inflation.

Meanwhile a new Ministry of Labour will oversee the biggest boost to workers’ rights in decades, while planned hikes to the pension age beyond 66 will not go ahead.
