We get up close and personal with the founder of Hourglass Cosmetics.

Time is on Carisa Janes’ side. Having enjoyed ten years success since founding Hourglass Cosmetics in 2004, we can confidently say Janes knows a thing or two about building a coveted beauty brand. We caught up with the Venice Beach-based Janes to talk inspiration, beauty essentials, and what modern luxury means today.  KELLEY HOFFMAN

Do you have a first beauty memory?
Well, my grandmother loved makeup and everything beautiful. In her guest bedroom she had an old vanity set up, and inside of it, she had powders, brushes, and mirrors and all these beautiful little collectible things. I was really young, but I remember being so excited to get there, to get into those drawers, and just the smell of the powder and the beautiful intricate packaging—I loved that.

What led you to starting your own beauty company?
I was consulting in beauty brands for a long time, and I felt there was an opportunity to create something in the luxury category. I really believed that there were women out there that would appreciate gorgeous packaging with high-quality products that had innovative formulations. I wanted that beautiful feeling of all these luxury brands, but I wanted the product to be more modern.

How did you come up with the name for your brand?
I knew I didn’t want to name the brand after myself. I wanted it to have its own identity. I chose the name Hourglass because it was feminine, but strong. It was timeless and it had a sense of mystery to it. I just thought it fit.

Where do you find inspiration?
The idea of simplifying a product is inspiring. If there’s something you feel is missing, or something you would like to be more user-friendly—that’s inspiring. And I think a lot of it is just, looking at art; I live in a very creative place, I live in Venice Beach—very vibrant, a lot of creative energy, and I’m around a lot of creative people. And I think that that just innately makes you more creative when you’re exposed to it.

What do you find powerful about makeup?
Number one, a little makeup makes everyone look better, no matter how gorgeous you are. The most beautiful woman in the world, with makeup, looks better—that’s powerful. But then the other side of that is you can be creative, and that’s one of my favorite things about makeup—because we get to wear it. You know, one day you’re in a mood, you feel like wearing soft pink…and you feel like really feminine…you can create soft feminine makeup. Or you feel like you’re in a mood to feel edgy, strong, and you do a cat eye, or line the inner rim of your eyes—it just creates a whole different personality.

Your Ambient franchise, your mineral primer, and your Icon lipstick all have a devoted following. What do you personally love about these products?
I read a lot of reviews about the Ambient Lighting Powder, and my favorite reviews are the ones that say, “It’s really hard to put your finger on it, but you don’t really know that it’s doing anything. You don’t see a difference, but then suddenly you do.” And it’s really true—it’s like you look in the mirror and you’re like, “Did anything just happen?” With this, it’s completely seamless—as well as the Ambient Lighting Blush, so especially when you use those two together, you won’t have the striping you do with the traditional blush. You’re not going to have a line because the technology of the particles is so advanced, they’re transparent particles instead of pigment particles, which creates a very sheer finish.

The Veil Mineral Primer is unlike any other primer on the market. It has completely weightless texture, which I think makes it very unique, yet you get really great results. So, the instant you apply it—most primers you apply you don’t see a difference—you do see a difference; it eliminates the redness from your skin, it tightens your pores, and then the durability of what you put over it is extended. So whatever foundation you use, or powder, it’s like your makeup insurance. It keeps your makeup looking great all day.

For the Icon collection, I think if you wear red lipstick, it has to be the right red. And I think a lot of reds are too orange or too pink, and I think it’s that perfect combination of blue-red that is so hard to find, that’s rich and has a great texture yet high pigment payoff—and yet the right color of red. And I think that’s just—that franchise is the perfect red lip—it’s the iconic red lip.

Urban Decay Vice3
Urban Decay founder Wende Zomnir is known for being hands-on about her product testing. She even wears a full face of vibrant makeup to her hardcore gym sessions to make sure it’s really waterproof (check out her Instagram profile for proof!). She told us her favorite shades from this palette earlier this year, and we can confirm: They are awesome.

The MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Shadows come in 210 shades, which can make picking a color a little overwhelming. This season’s Studio Case is an easier choice. The case features 12 Artist Shadows, as well as a full-size black Artist Liner. Of course, one of the colors is a Dany Sanz favorite: black.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Palette
We’ve gushed about this palette before. Featuring an exclusive peach shade, each blush is infused with the iconic Ambient Lighting Powder. What you’re left with is a gorgeously fresh-faced, lit-from-within flush. We just can’t get enough.

NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette
Exclusive to Sephora, this cheek palette will help you achieve your best full-face makeup look. The notorious Deep Throat blush shade makes an appearance, as well as the bestselling Laguna Bronzing Powder. Also included are two limited-edition blushes: Final Cut and Sex Fantasy.
