#258 Millennium Mambo (2001, dir. Hou Hsiao-hsien) (Recommended)
Tremendous visually, Hou Hsiao Hsien’s post-millennium vignetted story of a young, wandering, reckless girl captures a sense of youthful disaffection pretty spectacularly, in a way that is reminiscent of, but different to, some of the films of Wong Kar-Wai. Its an atmospheric film, and quite a wandering one; showing voyeuristic segments of Vicky’s life narrated by an off camera voice speaking 10 years after the events. This trick is effective, as it allows the young girl to assess her life with the same sense of distance that the viewer has whilst watching her.
Want to see a HHH film on the big screen so bad.
