anonymous asked:

can you explain progressed charts? what they are, how important they are, how to read it, etc? thank you so much and good luck on your trip! 💫☀️🌟✨⭐️

Hey anon! They’re the charts that talk about your current situation in life by calculating what has progressed from your natal one. The planets keep on moving (you don’t say) and changing signs so as time goes by you adapt to what life throws at you by adding the characteristics of the next signs (and it’ll depend on the speed each planet moves). But you’ll always be of the same sign! Like. If your Venus was in Pisces and has currently progressed to Aries just means some traits from the Aries sign have been added to the way you love - but you still have that Venus in Pisces. Makes sense? Reading this tag might help as well. And the things that your chart are talking about, like… The planet that is ruling your marriage and how it’ll go that is in your natal will meet the same settings by transit eventually (like Saturn in Sagittarius in the natal chart meeting the Saturn in Sagittarius in the last twoish years), and when they do it’ll mean the time to get married has come. lol Get it? The planets progressing like they do are, with time, giving out the promises that they made in your natal chart. So if Mars in your natal chart is already talking about eventually breaking your leg, the progressed will show if it’s about to happen or not. However, for these cases Solar Returns are way more efficient.

I'm really interested in learning Japanese but I'm not really sure where to start with it.

It’s amazing how someone can teach themselves a whole new language by themselves. I self-studied Japanese and never used a textbook. There are so many resources for learning, online and free. You can learn just using the online or free resources listed here and beyond. But where do you start?

First, start with hiragana. There are many ways to learn it.

videos:

Next, learn Katakana

videos:

Next understand more about hiragana like long vowel sounds, muddied sounds, The Small や、ゆ、and よ, the small つ、the long vowel sound with Tae Kim.

Then more with katakana. Learn the long vowel sound and the small ア イ ウ エ オ with Tae Kim again.

Then additional sounds using whatever method helped you learn hiragana and katakana.

Done with all that?  Now, drop romaji. It’s dead to you. A little reluctant? Practice more.

Learn grammar next with vocab and kanji on the side. It’s hard to learn grammar without vocab and it’s hard to learn words without understanding some kanji. I know it’s tough but once you ride it out through grammar learning Japanese becomes much smoother and easier. It’s not as frustrating. It’s so fun.

Grammar

Vocab

  • memrise
  • JLPT N5 vocab list ( recommend learning other JLPT vocab later too)
  • learn the words in the grammar lessons too!
  • Write down new vocab you come across and make flash cards or quizlets to learn them

kanji

Dictionaries

Dictionaries are helpful for vocab and kanji.

  • imiwa?
  • jisho
  • Japanese ( This is my main dictionary)
  • Download Japanese dictionary and Japanese-English dictionary on iPhone in settings, go to dictionary on settings

After all that just keep practicing. Go to your best free resource, your public library and find books in your level, watch videos in Japanese, read manga, watch a film in Japanese etc.

Also, here’s a good masterpost that also lists other good masterposts and more.

Here’s some miscellaneous advice I want to give beforehand I really hope you'll take:

  • Try using the Japanese dictionary the most, not the Japanese-English one but the completely in Japanese definitions of words one. Use Japanese-English when you can’t understand the Japanese definition to help yourself. I found English words given to define Japanese words seem to be similar words or/and words the Japanese word is usually translated in. It’s hard to really understand the word exactly. To really understand the word I find myself having to read the Japanese definitions. This is literally what I give the most credit for my progress in Japanese. ( some good ones are kotobank and goo辞書 as well as the iPhone one.)
  • Learn loan words. Sometimes they aren’t used like the language it originally came from uses it.
  • Understand what radicals are so you use them to look up kanji. Lots of Japanese dictionaries let you look up by radical.
  • Practice stroke order. I mean my handwriting is messy but a least it’s legible and not as messy as it could be.
  • learn Dialects!
  • Some words use a couple different kanjis. Learn the nuances of using those different kanjis in the word.
  • Read news in Japanese
  • learn the culture. It’s impossible to learn Japanese without understanding the culture.
  • learn kanji by learning how its used and vocab. Here’s a post I made about that. It’s the same one above.
  • Change your phone into Japanese.
  • follow Japanese people’s accounts on social media, whether that’s here on Tumblr, Twitter or Instagram.
  • And lastly, Don’t lose yourself to discouragement. Keep going. I can’t tell you how good it felt to watch Jdrama completely in Japanese or read a whole adult novel in Japanese. I could see anyone getting there too. It takes time but it’s very possible.

Followers, feel free to recommend any resource in the notes:)

Worldbuilding: Phrases and Sayings

Whether we realize it or not, our culture has a way of saying things and has certain rules about when it can be said and by whom.  For English speakers, it is common for us to greet others with a “Hi!” or “Hello!”  If we are speaking to  peers, we may be even more casual and greet them with a “Hey”.  We even have certain phrases for certain times in the day (Good morning, good afternoon, good evening).  Other languages and cultures have other ways of greeting people, and that includes their own set of rules.  For example, in Japanese “ohiyo” is a casual way of saying “good morning” while “ohiyogozaimasu” is a more formal.  The formal version is used for people of a higher status.

To create depth to your cultures, you can add phrases and sayings.  Here I have compiled a list of common phrases and sayings for you to consider.  Also, remember that your culture may have a phrase or saying that English does not have.

How do they greet each other?
By saying “You good”?  Is it nonverbal?  A grunt?  “Thanks to the great sky god, the sun sets in the west”?
Does it vary depending on to whom it’s said?

How do they say farewell?
Watch your path”?  A nod?  A gesture?  “We shall see each other”?
Does the type of farewell dictate what is said?  (Ex. a “I’ll see you again” goodbye versus a “This is the final goodbye”)

Do they greet each other differently depending on the time of day?
Good sunrise?  Good twilight?  If there is a version of “good night,” is it said as a greeting or a farewell?

Do they have honorables?
Mister, missus, miss?  Sir?  Madam?  Is the honorable said at the end of the name like -san?
Do they have specific honorables for family members and friends?  Children?

How do they ask “How are you doing”?
Do you fare well?  You good?  Are you well?
What is the appropriate response to this question?

Do they say anything before a meal?
A prayer?  “Let’s dig in?”  “We thank the one who prepared this food?”
Is there anything they say after the meal?

How do they imply that someone isn’t bright?
“He never moved past picture books”?  “She could argue with a baby and lose”?  “He’s as sharp as child’s ball”?  “She’s not a candle I would read by”?
How do they imply that someone is bright?

What are some explicit phrases?
Ocean’s roar!  Phlet!  Oh my head!  Son of a sheep herder!  Blacking hour!
Is it appropriate to say these phrases in polite company?

How do they wish good luck?
May fortune favor you?  I hope the gods smile on you?  I pray your foot finds solid ground?
How do they wish ill will?

What do they say in celebration or relief?
Bonzai?  Yaaaaaaaas?  Oh thank the moon gods?
What do they say when something doesn’t go their way?

How do they apologize?
Is apology a gesture?  Something you have to do?  Does an equivalent of “I’m sorry” work?
How do they accept or reject an apology?

How do they say “ow”?
Ish?  Ta?  Gah?  A long string  of swear words?

Some sayings in English to give you ideas to come up your own sayings:

“As the crow flies” - A straight path without detours.

“Wild goose chase” - A hopeless quest.

“Beat around the bush” - Avoiding the point.

“Cart before the horse” - Getting things in reverse order.

“Raining cats and dogs” - Referring to heavy rain.

“Take with a grain of salt” - Accept it with a bit of skepticism.

“Keeping up with the Joneses” - Striving to match the neighbor.

“Get off your high horse” - A demand for someone to stop acting high and mighty.

Each saying has its own history.  Not many people may know the history behind the saying, but they understand the meaning of it.  In the same way, when developing sayings, your characters don’t have to know the history behind the saying.  You yourself can come up with the background of the saying, thus to give it reason for why it makes sense.  By coming up with the history of a phrase, you may find yourself developing more of your culture.  Also, your culture may not have their own version of the phrases above.

It should also be noted that if you plan to add your phrases and sayings in your writings, you should make sure the reader understands.  Unless it’s a conversation where the phrase or saying is supposed to go over the head of the character (and thus likely the reader as well), the phrase or saying should not be so vague that your reader is left confused.  In this case, it is helpful to have someone read over it.
For example:  “She hoards like the Queen of Shireheff.”
You don’t need to explain who the Queen of Shireheff is, or that the Queen has an entire castle dedicated to her shoe collection.  You don’t need to share the development of culture behind the meaning of the saying.  But the reader can guess that the Queen is an infamous hoarder.
So make sure your reader has enough context clues to understand the meaning of the phrase.  It might take work to master it without seeming clumsy or infodumping, but you can improve by practicing.
I realize that this may seem confusing and if that is the case, feel free to ask me to clarify.

🥄Spoonie Devotional Tips🥄

I’m sure a lot of us have had days where we’ve wanted to make an offering or spend devotional time with our gods but couldn’t find the time or energy. I’ve been getting a lot of asks lately on ways to honor your gods when your spoons are running low so I thought I would share some of my favorite tips. I hope this helps at least a little bit! As always links are in italics.✨🥄

  • This may seem pretty obvious but praying is a great option. I do this fairly frequently when I’m bed ridden, it’s a good time to talk to the gods and tell them of your love and devotion for them. Or you could just tell them a cool story you think they’d like, however praying works for you.
  • Audio books are amazing! You can find readings of so many mythology books on youtube. Alternatively, if you have the energy you can read a book about your religion/gods!
  • Light an incense or scented/colored candle that reminds you of your god. If your god loves oranges light an orange candle and when it’s lit keep it as an offering to your god. Plus then you get to smell lovely things.
  • Hang a sigil or rune that reminds you of your god next to your bed, if you’re a secret witch you can slide it in your pillow case or in a drawer! It’s something small you can have out as an offering but it’s also good to pray too or make you feel a little witchy. You can also just have some spoonie sigils out!
  • If you haven’t already make a playlist of songs that remind you of your gods or ones they might like! Or you could just listen to one album or artist that makes you feel this way, whatever floats your boat really.
    • If you’re curious I have a few for the Norse gods I’m closest too but it’s all pretty much UPG. Thor. Odin. Frigg. Freyja. Freyr. Hel. I’ll probably start ones for Sif and Skadi soon!
  • Movies! This is more pop culture than anything but I find it can help. When I’m wanting to worship Hel for instance I’ll watch Corpse Bride, Book of Life, or something along those lines. It’s all pretty much upg, whatever you think your god would enjoy!
  • Other things you can try are doing your best to take care of yourself by hydrating and eating a snack! I’m not sure if every god would be completely down with this but those I worship tend to appreciate self care so take care of yourself as a way to honor your gods. For instance if I want to worship Hel I like apples because they’re fruit I relate to our Lady of the Dead .
  • If you like tea or coffee have a cup with flavors that remind you of them! Another example with Hel, I like to use chocolate creamer in my coffee or stronger black teas usually mixed with vanilla, chai, or lavender! Whatever you think is best!

DA:I companions (and advisors, if you feel like it) react to an Inquisitor with a young child from a previous relationship? (The other parent is not relevant to the Inquisitor anymore) Romance please, if you can, thank you!

Sorry for the lack of updates on my end. Life has been hectic the past 2 weeks. Ranging from job interviews and getting community service hours to graduate. (I already have the 80 i just want to get the cord but I need like 300+ hours.) Anyways sorry for the delay

-Mod Othe

Cassandra- She could tell that the Herald was stressed, not just from everything that’s happened but from something else. It isn’t until the scouts find a young child that she finds out why. Seeing them fuss and hold the small child in their arms makes her realize how little she knows about them. She makes a comment of how their child is cute. She helps with what she can. watching the child when the Herald is called away. If Romanced: She wonders if there is another woman. Or if she’s the other woman. She asks her lover but when he tells her that the child’s mother isn’t in the picture she relaxes. She never thought she wanted children but things change.

Varric- He finds it charming that they have a kid. It makes them seem more real. More than just a figurehead. When the Inquisitor is called to a meeting or any other situation he offers to watch their child. He’s often seen reading to the child in the main hall. He uses his contacts in the Merchants Guild to make sure that the child is well provided for when the Inquisitor isn’t around. When the Inquisitor tries to pay him back he declines.  “Just give the kid a good life. Don’t worry about a thing.” He enjoys watching the Inquisitor with their child. Seeing the way the Inquisitor holds them after being apart from them, telling them little stories, laughing with them, playing with them. Its humbling. Another little fact to add in his book, to show people that the Inquisitor is human, normal.

Solas- When he sees the Herald. crying over their found child, he feels his blood run dry. He knows that the child won’t have a normal life. Not with what the future holds. It also makes him think of all the others caught in the blast and it weighs heavily on his conscience making him doubt for just a minute. But its quickly pushed aside, he needs to focus on his people. He tends to avoid the child however, seeing them brings back the doubt and guilt. If Romanced: When she shows him her child he has questions. Surely the father would want his child and lover back? But when he is told that the father isn’t in the picture he is still hesitant for a different reason. But he allow himself to relax. He knows he shouldn’t but he lets himself get comfortable.

Iron Bull- He’s actually really great with kids, basically a gentle giant (literally.) He’s like a really big uncle. He keeps the child safe when the Inquisitor isn’t there and enjoys giving them piggy back rides. He also jokes that one day the child will get as tall as him. If they are old enough to understand they are in awe at it. And if they are a qunari child he actually means it. If Romanced: He wonders if they have a partner and if hes just a lay for fun. Yet, when he’s assured that the other isn’t in the picture he enjoys having a child with the Herald and relishes in seeing them together. His little family.

Dorian- He finds the child cute and will often be seen with the child in his lap reading a book to them. Often the child will fall asleep in his lap. He hopes that the Herald will give them a good life, a better one than his own gave him. But he knows the Herald and he knows the child is in safe hands. After his companion quest he makes a comment to the Inquisitor, “Your child is lucky to have a parent like you.” He knows the child will grow up happy and loved. If Romanced: What the hell, is the first thought at seeing the child. He panics and wonders if hes just a lay for fun. But when he asks and his lover assures him that his former girlfriend/ wife isn’t in the picture he relaxes and can’t help but smile at being a dad. Even though he does joke that hes too ‘young’ to be a dad.

Viv- When she first sees the child she can’t help but smile. She tells the Inquisitor that other nobles who have children will be more relaxed when they to see that the Inquisitor also has a child. She puts her own funds towards the child’s education and even clothing. The child must be seen in the best of light possible. When the Inquisitor makes a comment about repaying her she to declines. “Just give them the best life possible. Show them love and acceptance that can be my payment.” While she does see the child as something to be used to help strength ties she also enjoys being in the child’s presence their laugh and smile is simply precious.

Sera- At first she avoids the child not really sure how to react to them. Then one day the child is around to witness on of her pranks and when she hears them laugh and see them smile she realizes that she can teach them to prank. This is much to the Inquisitors dismay. She does keep a watchful eye on the kid more so when she’s doing some elaborate prank. She enjoys being with the child more after that. If Romanced: She is definitely confused and wonders if there is someone else. But when her Honey Tongue tells her that the father isn’t in the picture anymore she relaxes. She loves being with her new little family and she loves spending time with the child.

Blackwall- He likes making toys for the child and when the Inquisitor is called off to somewhere he takes the child to paint wooden blocks together. At the end of it he often has paint in his beard but its worth it. If Romanced: Hes wary. This means that she has a husband or lover somewhere out there. When she tells him that the father hasn’t been in the picture he relaxes. He loves his new family. He love just being with them.

Cole- “Small hands, small little feet, back in my arms. Happy and loved. This is how it should be. You in my arms, hearing your little laugh and seeing your little smile. Life is complete again.” He is the best one to take care of the child. He can sense what they need and when they want to be with their parent. He also know when they are getting overwhelmed by the thing going on around them.

Leliana- She is different around the child. Softer, gentle. She can sometimes be seen holding the child and sometimes be heard singing to the child. The soft singing will calm the child and often bring the child to sleep. If anyone tries to harm the child she shows no mercy bringing that person to a swift end. No harm will come to the child not while she breaths.

Josephine- She loves the Inquisitors child and will sometimes encourage them to bring them to meetings with nobles that also have children. It shows people that the Inquisitor is more than just the Inquisitor. It shows they are a parent and someone who was loved or is loved. If Romanced: She is a bit concerned, thinking that she’s stepped on a already formed relationship. When shes told the the other isn’t in the picture she relaxes. She can’t help but feel a little pride at having a small family.

Cullen- He makes sure that the child is well protected at all times. He hates to think that there are people that would harm the child just for being the Herald’s child. He does like seeing the Inquisitor with their child, knowing that the child will be loved and cared for. If Romanced: Like any sane man he immediately wonders if his lover has a husband or boyfriend. When hes told that he isn’t in the picture he spends more time with the child. He’s often seen reading reports with the child in his lap and sometimes seen rocking them to sleep.

Full House (Young Sirius x Reader)

Pairing: Young Sirius x Reader

Requested: Yes.

Summary: After not being able to find any quiet place to read, y/n heads into the Gryffindor common room in hopes of finding someplace to read.

Rating: Mid-Fluff.

Warnings: Sirius being dramatic, confessions of love, mild language.

A/n: This is my first time writing for Sirius, so I hope it’s good!

Title: Full House

You sigh, grabbing your book close to your chest as you walk rapidly out of the library. After you’d picked out your book you had hoped the library would be quiet enough to sit down and read for a while, but the sound of kids walking around, whispering to each other, closing books, taking books off shelves- it was too loud for your liking.

It doesn’t take you long to find yourself in the Gryffindor common room. The first thing that strikes you is the odd lack of noise. It was almost unsettling how quiet it was; there was almost always some sort of ruckus going on. The next thing that hits you is a crumpled piece of parchment. Literally. It bounces off your forehead and falls to the ground with a soft whoosh. Your grip tightens around the book as your eyes scan the room madly, finally settling on a group of boys lounging on the couch.

Well, one boy is lounging, while the others are trying to take up the least amount of space as possible. “Y/n, sorry! Didn’t see you there.” Sirius exclaims, a look of shock barley masking the teasing glint in his eyes. You roll your eyes as a small smile stretches across your face, and head over to the couch. As you get closer to them, you can see that Sirius has obviously made himself comfortable, taking up more than half of the couch, while poor Remus is sitting smashed against the armrest. You glance around to find a spot to sit down and join your friends, but you soon realize there is nowhere to sit. James occupies the lone chair just to the left of the couch, and his face is buried in a book as he stays strangely silent.

“Y/n!” Remus exclaims, smiling brightly at you. “What brings you here?”

“I was trying to find a quiet place to read.” You say, smiling softly. “Which I didn’t expect to be here.” You murmur. “Is there some sort of trick you boys have got planned that I don’t know about?” You grin cheekily. “Is that why everyone’s so deathly quiet?” Out of the corner of your eyes you can see James stiffen slightly and move his face closer to his book while Remus blanches.

“A prank?” Remus laughs and waves his hand in the air. “Oh, no. Not at all. It must just not be a very busy day.”

“Remus…” You start.

“People must be tired.”

“Remus, the common room’s full. In fact, there’s nowhere to sit.” You sigh slightly and glance down at your book.

“Y/n, are you needing a seat?” Sirius asks, shifting on the couch slightly. Your eyes meet his, and you nod wordlessly. “You could always sit with me,” he drawls, “why don’t you come sit on my lap and read your book?” The words leave his lips effortlessly, and James shakes slightly in his seat. Your cheeks turn bright red, but you simply raise an eyebrow at him. You move forward wordlessly, holding in your laughter at the way his eyes widen slightly. However, before you reach Sirius you turn and sit down on Remus’ lap. You open your book rather quickly, ignoring the chuckle coming from James’ direction.

“Y-y/n!” Remus exclaims. You lift the book up slightly to cover your face, peering at Remus somewhat discreetly.

“Remmy, please.” You whisper so that only he can hear you, meeting his gaze and glancing at Sirius quickly. Remus’ eyes light up as he understands what you’re doing, and he shrugs. You turn your attention back to your book and begin to read.

Because of this, you don’t notice Sirius’ face turning a bright shade of red as he stares at his friend, mouth agape. His fist clenches slightly.

“I- I cannot believe this.” He grumbles. “I set up this whole thing! I got everyone I could to come here, we’ve been here hours, just waiting for you to walk in! I’ve made them stay in the seats, making sure there was no room for anyone! A few Sixth years came in wanting to sit down- I almost lost my life!” Sirius’ voice takes on a dramatic tone as Y/n looks over at him in puzzlement. “I- I know I’m not good at this stuff, but I never thought this would happen.”

“What? Sirius, what are you-”

“You’ve fallen for Remus! All I was trying to do was get your attention on me, hell, maybe get you to sit with me! I would’ve moved over, y/n! Bloody hell! I would’ve moved over.” You stare at him and tilt your head. “Oh, Merlin. How can you not understand this?” Sirius stands up, dragging his hand down his face. “I love you Y/n.” Your eyes widen at his confession, and you practically fall out of Remus’ lap.

“W-what?” You manage to stammer, staring up at him with wide eyes. As you stand up fully, the book falls out of your lap and to the floor. “What did you say?” You lower your voice to a whisper, trying to hide the smile that’s pulling at your lips.

“You heard me. I said I love you.” Sirius repeats, meeting your gaze. Now his eyes fill with confusion as you step forward. “But you obviously fancy Remus, so I don’t know why I’m bothering with this confessio-” You cut off his sentence when you practically tackle him. Your arms wrap around him quickly as a you giggly softly.

“Sirius- come on, don’t be silly.” His arms hang at his sides as his face heats up slightly.

“What?”

You pull away and meet his gaze. “Do you think I’d actually sit on Remus’ lap if I fancied him?” Sirius begins to speak, but before you can you sit down next to Remus and pat the cushion next to you. “Now that you’re done being an asshole, there’s room for both of us.” You smile up at him, and at this moment James erupts in a fit of laughter, slamming his book shut and basically throwing it away from him.

“How did you- ever- think that was going to work mate?’ He asks, struggling to speak as he laughs loudly, doubling over in his seat and clutching at his stomach.

“Oh, shove it, James!” Sirius huffs, plopping down on the seat next to you. “I knew exactly what was going to happen. Everything went according to plan,” he murmurs, slinging an arm over your shoulders. You roll your eyes slightly, deciding not to say anything else as you rest your head on his shoulder.

Ok so I’m just getting in to the Celtic mythology and I’m confused a little bit. So the Tuatha Dé Danann is the people of the goddess Danu, and they were the fifth tribe to invade Ireland I think? But is the Tuatha Dé Danann like a council of gods and goddess’ kinda like the council of gods in Greek mythology??? I bought a book but it didn’t explain it to me too well. Thanks!

Oh, don’t worry - I’m also confused by a lot of it despite having studied it for a good damned long time.  But let me add as much as I can.

Celtic Mythology is a wide umbrella term for several different mythos - Gaelic, Gaulish, Celtiberians, Welsh, etc.  The Tuatha De Danann are specifically Gaelic or Irish to be exact. The Goddess Danu might not actually exist according to some scholars and to the archaeological record but to many practitioners that worship Her, someone is obviously answering to that name so it’s really hard to pin down.  The name itself is often said to be a mistranslation or at the very least confusing.

Yes, the Tuatha De Danann were part of the invasions who came to Ireland. The Tuatha De are the fourth invasion as the ancestors of the modern Irish, the Mileans, came last and defeated the Tuatha De Danann and forced them to live underground in the earth and the mounds of Ireland.  The four cycles (the Mythological, the Ulster, the Fenian and the Cycles of the Kings) tell their story as well as a lot of other Irish mythological sources.

They aren’t really a pantheon of gods and goddesses in the Greek sense and more of a literal tribe. They have a series of kings (chieftains etc) and strong familial ties.

Another good source of info on the Irish mythos can be found on the Gaol Naofa organization web site but at the same time, take whatever you find there with a grain of salt.  Bunch of TERF bastards, even if they have good information.  I also recommend reading the original cycle materials (the links can be found in the wiki articles at the bottom, try to find a good translation of the original books like the Lebor Gabála Érenn) and finding the book by Morgan Daimler called “Irish Paganism”. It’s a wonderful beginner’s primer.

I hope that helps! Also, if folks want to reblog and add more info to this post, I’d really appreciate it!

These are just some of the misconceptions Tony had. He has a hell of a lot more.

After Tony’s heat Sarah sits him down to find out what all he’s been misinformed about. Don’t worry Sarah waited until after she’d corrected Tony and left him to think about it before she threw herself on her bed and sobbed her heart out.

1) Tony believes that the scent of his heat is an invitation and he should hide himself from everyone. If he is smelled and someone forces themselves on him, it is his fault for not being more careful.

(“No, sweetheart, being taken advantage of is not your fault. You’re not inviting someone to hurt you. Not only will your scent not drive everyone to come find you, but alphas are held responsible for their own actions. If one of them assaults you, it’s their fault. But most people are not going to hurt you. I understand you feel unsafe, of course you do after what you’ve been told, but those—those were lies.”

Tony looks up at her, so hopeful, but the fear is still there, the fear that she’s the one lying to him. Sarah is only sorry they could not behead Stane.)

2) Sex is going to hurt. Always. No questions. It will hurt because omegas were meant to handle pain; that’s why they give birth. It’s also meant to keep omegas submissive. If an alpha is being gentle to keep from hurting you, it means you’re not pleasuring him properly.

(Sarah literally chokes on her spit and then she has to walk over and lean her head against a wall and just… process for a few minutes. Tony watches her worriedly, frowning, but she does eventually come and sit back down.

“NO.”

Tony rears back, terrified.

“Sex is not supposed to hurt and if it does the alphas are doing it wrong.

“But—but the knot,” Tony begins helplessly.

“That’s why you get wet oh Lord in heaven give me strength. Anthony. Oh, my dear. Steven and James are not going to hurt you. An alpha being gentle is proof of how much they care for you and your well-being, not proof that you’re not pleasuring them. And literally anything feels good on an alpha’s dick, honey, that’s why all those masturbation jokes exist.”

“…Those are based in fact?”

“Oh, honey.”)

3) Wanting sex outside of a heat makes you a slut. Omegas were meant to be bred for heirs. If an alpha wants sex out of heat, that’s his/her right, because they are virile and often feel the need to stake a claim. An omega wanting sex out of heat is disgusting and indicative that they’ll bend over for anyone.

(“Some people think that,” Sarah allows. “But it’s not actually true. Steven’s father and I had sex out of heat because I wanted to regularly. It promoted intimacy. Also it felt fantastic.”

Tony’s cheeks go rosy red at the admission. “So I’m not—I’m not—”

“Dear, Steven and James are very handsome,” Sarah tells him gently. “It’s not wrong to find them attractive and want to be intimate with them out of heat. Your libido still exists even when you’re not ready to make a baby.”

“…What’s a libido?” Tony asks.

Sarah wants to find Stane’s corpse and stab it until there’s nothing left but mush.)

4) Omegas don’t orgasm because they’re only for breeding.

(Sarah literally screams in horror before he can continue and has to walk out of the room but she comes back quickly and grabs Tony’s hands and just whispers, “No.”)

5) Omegas that masturbate are not good omegas. Their bodies belong to their alphas.

(Sarah screams again but Tony’s ready for it this time. Then she grabs his hands and leans in and whispers, “No. Honey, I’m going to give you a book. It’s a private book, just for omegas. I hope it will put your mind at ease. I can answer any questions you have about it afterward. Please don’t be afraid to ask me.”

“Okay,” he says shyly, because he’s never been encouraged to ask questions before.)

6) Omegas are property.

(“Not in my country,” Sarah, an omega Queen, informs him imperiously. “Some countries yes. But not mine. And certainly not yours when your parents were alive.”

“Really?” Tony asks quietly, because he can’t—he can barely remember his parents. He was sure that Howard loved Maria like an equal, though. …Pretty sure, anyway.

Sarah leans in like she’s telling him a secret. “Maria wouldn’t have allowed your father to treat her like property. I didn’t know her well, but—I knew her enough. I’ll tell you stories about her.”

Tony smiles and it’s wide and bright.)

7) Omegas are meant to bend over for the alphas at all times.

(“I mean, if you’re in the mood, you can certainly feel free to do that,” Sarah says after some thought. “But you are allowed to say no if you don’t feel like having sex.”

“Won’t—won’t they get mad?” Tony asks nervously.

Sarah scowls. “Not my sons.” And then her expression softens. “You’re allowed to not be in the mood, and they must respect that. Or else they will have me to deal with.”

Tony can’t help a reluctant giggle. Steve and Bucky have already shown they are afraid of Sarah.)

8) Omegas are trophies. Having hobbies and interests that aren’t reading or needlepoint is frowned upon.

(“…You… you do needlepoint,” Sarah says, less of a question than expressing disbelief.

“I did the detailed embroidery on my ball gowns,” Tony says, shrugging, embarrassed.

“You… you have ball gowns?

Tony frowns, concerned. “Am I not—not supposed to? My mother had them made for when I came of age—”

“Male omegas wear dresses in your country,” Sarah wheezes, then hurries to add, “Of course you can wear them here as well, dear, I’m just—surprised, is all. Would you mind if I came by to see them one day?”

Tony continues to frown at her, skeptical. “…No…”

“Okay. Oh! Do you have your mother’s wedding gown, too?” she asks, remembering how opulent the dress had been and how radiant Maria had looked in it.

Tony frowns. “Yes? I can still get married in it can’t I? It’s the only thing I have left of my mother’s, please—”

“Oh, honey, of course you can,” Sarah coos. “Just—try not to tell Steven and James about it. Dresses are a secret, you know.” When Tony nods, still looking vaguely confused, she smiles at him. “Good. Now that that’s out of the way—how would you like to learn fencing?”

Tony brightens with hope. “M-me? Really?

Sarah leans in, smiling. “And ride a horse. Not side-saddle.”

Tony bounces in his seat. It’s the most excited she’s ever seen him.)

((Sarah gives him the book and reminds him it’s a private book, and then winks and leaves him to read it. Tony is bright red by the time he’s finished and keeps the book tucked under his pillow for rereading. Natasha finds it one day and raises an eyebrow at him and Tony’s so frightened, so nervous, that he’ll be in trouble with Sarah, but Natasha simply tucks it under his mattress and tells him that’s a better hiding place.

And Natasha is so kind about it, Tony shyly asks if she might know where he can find more books like it? Natasha gives him an unreadable look and says nothing, but she does come in the next morning and hand him a stack of books without names on the covers. Tony reads an incredibly risqué one and can’t look her in the eyes for days. She thinks it’s adorable.))

You watched the handsome stranger look around for the 5th time. If he wasn’t so good looking, you would be bursting out laughing at how cute he looked trying to find a place to sit. You were staring at him when your eyes suddenly met.

“Oh shoot,” you thought leaning over your book once more and pretending to read. You watched him get closer from the corner of your eyes and hoped that he’s not coming here. Luck wasn’t on your side today. He stopped right in front of you and you looked up. You couldn’t believe it’s possible that he’s even more handsome up close. You continued to stare at each other when you finally broke the silence.

“What is it?”

“Can I sit here? The other tables are full,” he asked already sitting down.

“Sure, go ahead,” you quickly mumbled, lifting your book up so he wouldn’t see you blushing.

“Oh my God,” you thought. “If he really continues to sit here, I will melt away.”

You tried to focus on reading but you couldn’t concentrate, being this close to him. You felt your book gently being pushed down from your face.

“Aha! So there is a person there,” he smiled at you with the prettiest smile you have ever seen and out of embarrassment you quickly slammed your book shut. Unfortunately it was on his finger.

“I’m so sorry!” you said, quickly grabbing his hand. Good job. You ruined a perfect chance to get to know him.

“No worries,” he replied. “I’m all better now. Perhaps your touch has magical healing powers?” he asked, repositioning his hand so he could shake it.

“I’m Jongdae,” you were so surprised by everything he was doing that you kept on holding onto his hand for a little bit too long but he didn’t let go either. You realized what you’re doing soon after and released it before sitting back into the chair.

“Y/N,” you said.

“So,” he continued. “Why is a cute girl like you sitting here by yourself?”

“Cute!? I’m the cute one? When you looked like an adorable penguin standing there in the middle all confused.”

“A penguin? That’s a new one,” he started laughing. You buried your face into the back of your hands. You could die from embarrassment right now. Way to go saying all that out loud.

“Hey hey, don’t go hiding again,” he said pulling your hands from your face again. “Since I was the one to occupy your private space, how about I buy you a coffee as a compensation?”

“Oh no no no, you don’t need to do that.”

“Please, I need to have a reason, so you would let me stay,” he said standing up. “I will be right back.”

hello! can I request a headcanon about the 12 lords reacting to MC that is unintentionally ignoring them because she found a really good book to read? Like the lords really want her attention but she's really absorbed to the book she reads. i really like your writing style btw :)

thank you lovely anon!! come off anon and talk to me :) your request was really fun, i hope you enjoy!

MC ignoring the lords in favour of a good book

  • Nobunaga plucks the book out of her hands and replaces it with his beautiful scowling face. Lots of sulking. She soothes him by letting him put his head in her lap and petting his hair. He confiscates the book when they’re together because he’s offended that she could find it more interesting than him.
  • Mitsuhide is stuck doing work, so they hang out together in his study. She reads, he works, they stay up all night without doing anything sinful for once. She lies down, rests her head on his thigh, and props the book up on her chest. He toys with her hair absentmindedly when he’s thinking about a particularly complicated issue.
  • Yukimura is confused because like… How can a book be that interesting?? Coughs a lot, drops stuff, is just really noisy in general until she looks up and is like is something wrong? Then he blushes and stutters until she figures out what’s going on.
  • Saizo tells her that he has something better for her to read, that he had a hand in its creation, and that reading it will result in her knowing him better. She’s intrigued, until she flips it open and some… interesting illustrations are burned into her retinas. She yelps and drops the book, buries her hot face in her hands while Saizo laughs and offers her some firsthand lessons instead.
  • Masamune suddenly has all the requests for her. He’s thirsty, he’s hungry, he needs this letter to delivered to so-and-so. When she comes back from that last errand, he catches her at the door and suggests they go for a moonlight stroll. She can’t resist, of course, so off they go hand in hand.
  • Kojuro is intrigued by what could possibly have his precious girl so engrossed and wants to be able to discuss it with her, so he sneaks out and buys another copy of the same book. She catches him with his nose buried in it and laughs until she’s on the verge of tears because why didn’t you just say something we could have just read it together
  • Hideyoshi keeps getting in her way. He puts his head on her shoulder, breathes on her neck, nuzzles her neck until she’s like is there something you want to tell me? He proceeds to hit her with the worst pickup line she’s ever heard. There’s silence for a moment, then she’s laughing and smacking his shoulder, he’s smiling, he grabs the book and slides it under the table while she’s busy wheezing. And then he goes on to distract her more thoroughly.
  • Inuchiyo says exactly what is on his mind. Is that thing more interesting than me!? She blinks at him. Well, you’re definitely more predictable than the book… He’s both offended and a little sad about it and starts to leave. She laughs and pulls him back, kisses him in apology. He grumbles.
  • Ieyasu gets straight to the point. If you don’t put that book down right now, I’m throwing it into the fire. They squabble for like twenty minutes until she offers to read it aloud to him. He pretends that it’s a huge pain but actually he really likes it because then they end up under the covers together. It’s so warm and comforting, and her voice is so calming…
  • Mitsunari demands to know what she’s reading. He then criticises her choice of reading material and suggests something more suitable for expanding the mind. She kicks him out. He comes back sulking an hour later and is just so generally prickly and pouty that she gives up and gives him the attention he wants but won’t ask for because he’s a giant child sometimes.
  • Shingen scoops her up and (gently) dumps her in bed. She protests but he’s just like your book will still be there tomorrow, but I want you now. She melts because a) she’s weak b) Shingen is persistent af anyway, might as well cave in now and save some time.
  • Kenshin hovers around her and gives her giant puppy eyes, but she’s too engrossed in her book to notice. Finally, he gives up on being subtle. He shoves his head into her lap and angles her face down to look at him, smiling beatifically. He tells her that he’s feeling lonely and wants to see her beautiful smile directed at him. She obliges because how can she not.

BONUS:

  • Shigezane snatches the book and takes off running. She chases him, calling for him to stop. Obviously, he doesn’t. They play tag throughout the castle and the retainers are just like haha they’re so cute, there they go again.

No Chance At All by lululawrence for @indiaalphawhiskey

As an omega, Louis naturally had the ability to sense alphas, so it wasn’t like this was an unusual situation for him. The difference here was that this man smelled so strong and so ridiculously good. Louis had never been so attracted to someone’s scent before. Add the fact that this worker whose name tag read “Harry” looked like some kind of greek god with his long curly hair and dimples as he chatted up the older woman ordering currently, and Louis was already a goner.

Or the one where Louis just wants to drink good coffee and work on his homework in peace, but the alpha barista is charming to everyone but him, and that just pisses him off.

Part 5  Part 7

Over the next two weeks, things were finally starting to come around for your new business.  Mary, your business partner, went over everything that needed to be done, and certain people that needed to be hired.

The first thing you did was come up with a name for your new bookstore and coffee shop.  You knew you wanted a catchy, yet funny name for your new business.  In the end, you came up with Bean There, Read That.  After coming up with the name, you made sure to trademark the name so nobody else could take it.

Once that was finished, you had to get a state registration to open the business.  Luckily, all that took was a quick trip to the courthouse and all was said and done.

I'm reading a new book and can't find any good music to listen to while reading. Do you have any suggestions or any recommended artists?

Okay! I am so excited about answering this! I, too, am always on the hunt for the perfect reading music! I’m not sure what genres you like/if you want music with lyrics or not so I’m going to throw a ton of stuff out there - I hope there’s something that strikes your fancy, and if you have a more specific request that I don’t cover, then feel free to ask! I personally listen to a lot of rock/punk music while I read, so if that’s interesting to you I can add some of that music, but I’ll stick with mostly ambient/peaceful/not distracting stuff.

Reading Music Masterlist

Music without lyrics

If you have a spotify account, then there’s a Spotify-created playlist called “Deep Focus” and this is my absolute go-to for academic reading or when I’m trying to do personal reading in a noisy location. It’s calm and peaceful and I basically lose all sensation and forget where I am beyond the story I’m reading.

Another Spotify playlist I really liked is called “Studying with Classical Music” created by user classifyapp1. It’s updated weekly though, so sometimes I’m in love with it and can’t get enough, and sometimes I don’t like anything on it. It’s still worth checking out if you can if you like classical music whilst reading.

If you don’t use spotify/want more specific recs, here are a few (still without lyrics):

  • Anything by Clocks & Clouds - perfect for action/intense reads because I always feel like I’m walking away from a fight scene with a building exploding behind me when I listen to them
  • Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92: Allegretto by Beethoven conducted by Leonard Bernstein - This piece is super cool because scientists have discovered that the chord sequences are perfect for releasing happy and stress-relieving chemicals in your body. Like the chords literally resonate with your body, or something like that (I switched from Bio Engineering to English for a reason). Also a great piece for getting work done on a tight deadline with a lot of stress
  • Pavane composed by Faure - peaceful with an enchanted forest feel
  • Anything composed by Philip Glass - my personal favorite is Akhenaten: Prelude
  • Gone in Bloom and Bough by Caspian - very ambient, and out-of-body
  • anything by Kyle Landry, but I particularly like the Howl’s Moving Castle Theme
  • Gaspard de la nuit: Ondine composed by Ravel (I like Martha Argerich’s recording quite a bit)
  • You Are a Memory by Message to Bears (ambient)
  • Come Away With Me by Tracey Chattaway (ambient)
  • Dancing on the Light by Richard Dillon (ambient)
  • Quiet by This Will Destroy You (ambient)
  • Rheaide does a cover of the Beauty and the Beast - Prologue music without any narration, just music, and I listen to this constantly while reading but just living my daily life. It makes me feel like a girl with her nose stuck in a book :)
  • ANYTHING by Joe Hisaishi - “Hisaishi Meets Miyazaki Films” is one of the best things to have happened to this planet
  • Vitamin String Quartet

Beyond this, other instrumental things that are great for reading are movie/video game soundtracks because they’re story-oriented which means they can set the mood really well for whatever you’re reading if you get the right thing. Some of the classic movie score composers that I would recommend are Dario Marinelli, Alexandre Dumas (his Harry Potter soundtracks give me life and I most certainly listened to them when reading the series), Hans Zimmerman, and John Williams.

One of my favorite video game soundtrack composers is Jeremy Soule who does Guild Wars and the Elder Scrolls (Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s music is f a n t a s t i c for reading). Final Fantasy music is also good for mood-setting. My absolute go-to’s when reading though are the Music from Braid soundtrack by Sieber, Kammen, Fulton and Schatz and Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts (the Dearly Beloved cover by Vitamin String Quartet for reads that are wholesome and romantic or even empowering coming-of-age type stories).

Lastly, the Avatar the Last Airbender soundtrack the Voltron soundtrack for the remake of the TV show are EPIC esp if you’re reading action/space operas.

Music with lyrics

What I do a lot of the time when I want music with lyrics to get me in the right mood for the book I’m reading, is I’ll do specific playlist searches on Google. For example, I’m reading A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab rn and love Lila’s character, so I just searched “Delilah Bard character playlist” and got great results. 8tracks.com users are also stars are creating fantastic character/book-specific playlists and they’re free!! Which is the best part!!

Here’s some music I gravitate towards when I’m reading but don’t have the energy to get all artsy with mood playlists:

  • Bloodstream by Stateless
  • Halsey’s first album
  • Marina and the Diamonds - Numb and Robot are two of my faves
  • Bloodsport by Raleigh Ritchie - If you like Rainbow Rowell, she added this to Baz’s character playlist from Carry On and it is PERFECT so I listened to it on repeat while reading. Also fun because Raleigh Ritchie aka Jacob Anderson was Grey Worm in the GoT TV show if that’s up your alley
  • Peppermint by Lovers
  • Anything by Tess Parks
  • Cigarettes after Sex - Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby is quite peaceful and reassuring for trying to get into a safe space mindset for reading
  • Once again if you have Spotify, Afternoon Acoustics playlist is perfect for curling up in a window or garden on a sunny day with a light read
  • We Are Broken by Paramore - fits apocalyptic reads quite well I think
  • A Sunday Smile originally by Beirut covered by Kishi Bashi
  • Forest Fire by Brighton

My last suggestion: if none of this music strikes your fancy, then you could try www.ambient-mixer.com!! There’s a ton of background noise tracks and they’re so fun and perfect for geeks, with tracks like “Gryffindor Common Room,” “D/D fantasy inn/tavern,” “Belle’s Library,” and less specific ones like “Summer Forest” and “On a Ship at Sea.” Perfect for immersing yourself into whatever story you’re reading!

Sorry this is so long, as I tried to be fairly comprehensive. Once again, feel free to ask me for more specific recs if this wasn’t helpful. And anyone else is welcome to add to this if they have suggestions! I hope you enjoy your reading :)

okay so im brand new to mythology and basically know nothing about it so where is like a good place to start?? is there books on it or? like how to learn about the myths and all that? sorry if this is bothersome i just wanna get into it but have no idea where to begin

Oh goodness, where to begin? It really depends what type of mythology you wish to learn about, as each culture has their own mythology, their own gods, etc. I learnt about Greek mythology first, which was pretty good because it’s very well known and there are many resources you can look at, and it got me enthusiastic to learn more about other myths (I then went on to read about Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Aztec, African, Japanese & Chinese, etc) - you might like to try that.

Below are some resources to learn about mythology you may find useful.

Websites:

Books:

I suggest you try some of the great classics/plays/poems. Some I’ve read include The Iliad, The Odyssey, Medea, Metamorphoses, Bacchae. Here’s a great list of classic literature such as these. Also:

If you are a little nervous about reading something that may seem tedious (don’t worry, it’s happened to the best of us!) you can try some awesome adaptions of myths - they can be easier to read with a contemporary writing style. Maybe once you’ve read them you can try the classics!

  • The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (really good alternative to The Iliad - about the Trojan War & Achilles)
  • The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood (Odysseus’ wife)
  • The King Must Die by Mary Renault (Theseus)
  • The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer (Hades and Persephone but Hades is a female)
  • Tales of The Greek Heroes by Rick Riordan, Roger Lancelyn Green

All the above are based on Greek myth, but if you want non-Greek myth novels Maddie made some good recommendations. There is also a good long list of myth literature here, and a masterpost of mythology fiction here.

Also try reading non-fiction! You can find non-fiction books about mythology in most bookstores, but if you want specific titles here are some that are known to be good:

Check out Amazon’s mythology section & BookOutlet always has great mythology books at super duper cheap prices.

Film & Media:

Watch movies, documentaries & tv shows! Great entertaining way to get into mythology. I don’t know many decent films but some include Troy, 300, The Trojan Women. I haven’t watched any of them because I prefer to read so I can’t really say how good they are, but you might find them interesting.

If you want to watch documentaries…

I also can’t say whether they are any good or not - maybe read up about them first to check if they are reliable!

Anyway, that’s all I really have, I hope this is sufficient. Good luck & enjoy!

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

(part 2) plus theyre a way to put ur charas in a completely diff context and see what theyll do. i mean i dont believe that writing ships in a certain context (like mafia) equals romanticizing that context. mafia AUs arent even my fav things to read (in fact i almost never do), im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

I’m not gonna roast you don’t worry xD okay wait let me check if I replied to this already if yes I’m gonna c/p because it’s half past midnight otherwise I’ll just go at it again wait *checks tags* fff obviously I don’t have a general post but anyway pls read this after you’ve done with my post and then this which is also choke-full of links. plus for a (not nice) laugh: here. AH WAIT I FOUND THE POST.

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so…

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term. But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

  • Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the ‘ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.
  • There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.
  • It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like… tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.
  • They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff.

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

Now, ^^^ that was the c/p-ed reply that should answer most of your doubts. What I didn’t address was:

im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

aaaand as we say here in Italy, this is where the donkey falls (sorry we have weird sayings), because in theory there’s nothing wrong with that… except that in 99% of the mafia aus I’ve seen around the thing is that they’re supposed to be cute.

like, I see a lot of shit with TINY MAFIA BOSS STEVE ROGERS with RUSSIAN ENFORCER BUCKY (????? bucky isn’t even russian???) and the yoi thing I saw before had the japanese character being the leader of a russian mafia gang which is… like… guys it doesn’t happen it really doesn’t, and a lot of them re-use wrongly terminology taken from the godfather without context or knowing what the hell it means, and it’s always from the criminals’ pov and they’re somehow seen as criminals doing justice where the police can’t (???) and like… no. mafia bosses/enforcers/employees are bad people period, and at least here if you try to leave or repent they kill your family in retribution. like, not even ten years ago there’s been a woman who used to belong to a mafia family (or one colluded with the mafia) who testified and her entire town/family shunned her and she couldn’t take it anymore and… killed herself drinking acid if I don’t recall wrong. it’s not even special cases. this shit is not funny, it’s not cute, it’s not adorable and it’s not good fodder for your imagine your otp scenario (srsly I saw one like.. let me find it,

LIKE. just look at this shit. in a regular context, the enforcer goes to the show owner to force them to pay a monthly sum to their boss lest they destroy their shop and their lives and their family’s life never mind that mafia culture is deeply homophobic so the mafia enforcer flirting with the shopkeeper is like completely fucking out of the question. I mean, people here like to shit on the sopranos but that show was actually excellent representation of Horrid Criminals Who Were Never Supposed To Be Good People and the small arc that happened when one of tony’s friends turned out to be gay (closeted) was REALLY well done. btw, it ended that when they found out he was gay most of the crowd rejected him and thought badly of him until I think they killed him also for other reasons, but that spiraled from finding out he liked dick. and that’s american mafia that they actually based on well-done research of the culture in Italy it came from, I assure you that here it doesn’t work that differently. like. the shit above is so inaccurate and frankly offensive, it’s like… I get people romanticizing problematic stuff but the thing is that when you tell them that it’s actually offensive you get brushed off as ‘ah well you’re being too sensitive it’s just a word u__u’. now, I’m all for exploring shit we wouldn’t be into, but not like THAT, because that’s like mafia romantic comedy and that’s not how it works. now, you wanna do a fic where the mafia characters are deeply flawed and bad people and the police tries to catch them? fine, great, go ahead. you wanna do a fic where the enforcer above deals with dunno an entire life of internalized homophobia when he finds the shopkeeper attractive and feels conflicted over having to con money out of him and doing horrible shit for a living and maybe understanding that crime isn’t worth it and then he actually collaborates with the police and gets shit from about everyone he knows and loves for that? okay, awesome, go ahead. nothing bad in that.

but the shit above is not exploring things we wouldn’t/writing darkfic, it’s THINKING THAT A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION WHICH IS STILL A THING IN OUR PART OF THE WORLD IS CUTE AND ADORABLE. and that only plays in their favor because it takes the bad aura out of the word and we really should not let that happen. like. that is what is bad about mafia aus and mafia discourse, that people don’t realize the mafia is alive and well and thriving and not a thing that doesn’t exist or a generic word for organized crime.

you wanna write the shit above? okay, CALL IT CRIME AU or mob au, not mafia au.

btw, add-on: idk if I mentioned it in the above post or not, but in case I didn’t, I said that people would balk at the idea of a mexican cartel au. sadly since then I’ve found out a fandom where not only there is one but it’s also extra cutesy and people apparently love it and it has a bunch of kudos/comments and idek I’m not even touching that with a ten foot pole but like… I’ve avoided it and everything that author wrote because to me it’s just… nope. like, nope. if you do mafia aus don’t make them fucking cute. (also: in the same fandom I had to mute a v. famous fanartist whose art I actually liked but did cutesy mafia aus and.. like… haahahhaahahahahaha nah sorry. can’t go there. nope.)
