hop rod rye

Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye (shown top):

This is another failure on my behalf for ordering beer, which I can get in Missouri. Not all was a failure though since this was a pretty darn good beer.

Pours a lovely reddish/brown with a finger of tan head.

Smells of IPA (of course) lots of earthy pine, hops, good citrus (mainly orange), grapefruit. Great smell.

The taste is like the smell, all kinds great flavors… and it’s blended so well. Good orange flavor through the malts and hops. Then a nice complex fusion of spice, rye, and bitterness.

A nice thick body, that still goes down relatively smooth.

Real good beer, and another one that I am happy to be able to get here in Missouri, but I would not expect a bad beer from a name like BEAR Republic.

AleSmith Anvil (shown bottom):

Appearance is probably the best part. Some copper, gold, nice bubbles.

The smell is a bit light with some caramel, bread, and malts.

Good balance with caramel malts, bread, a little woodsy. Nice hop aftertaste that adds the bitter into this ESB.

Pretty light body here, which is light on carbonation to.

Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye (picked up at Whole Foods, Berkeley). A 4 of 4. An awesome hoppy rye ale - massive amounts of rye spiciness in this, as well as some nice earthy, pine, and a touch of citrus hop presence. Very smooth to drink and just the right amount of bitterness. Some awesome caramel-y sweetness to round it out as well. Strikes a really nice balance between rye, piney hop presence, and malty sweetness. Awesome - I’ve had it plenty of times, but it somehow slipped through the cracks on the blog.
